The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World

President’s Message for March 2018 As members are aware, since the introduction of the CEO, the office has been undergoing a complete restructure. Over the last few weeks our staff structure has begun to change, and as part of that I regret to advise members of the redundancy of Mark Sheppard, who has been our long serving Government and Agency Liaison Officer. We wish Mark all the best for the future and thank him for his service to Dogs Queensland. Our accountant, Umesh Prasad, has also resigned from Dogs Queensland and taken up a position in Sydney with a large company that will allow him better long-term career prospects. We wish Umesh and his family all the best with his relocation and new endeavour. Due to the restructure of the office and reduction in staff numbers, the timeframes for processing have fallen behind, and unfortunately will remain this way for the next two to three months. During this time, I ask members to be patient and accept that some members services such as litter registrations, title applications, etc, will take longer than usual. I can assure members that once the restructure has been completed, and our systems have been fully updated over the next few months, the office’s efficiencies will be better than they ever have. Please be patient, as these processes do take time if we want to make sure they are done properly. War Dog Memorial Our War Service Dog Memorial was unveiled on Sunday 4th February at our Durack grounds. The unveiling was conducted in partnership with the RSL and the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation. I would like to extend a huge thanks to Rodney Vernon for his efforts in driving this project over the last twelve months. As many members would have seen, Dogs Queensland had a 3-minute segment on Channel 7 News for the unveiling of the memorial. The media attention was amazing for our organisation and we have received a great deal of positive feedback.

We’re always well fed at Club thanks to our great kitchen team.

Cairns City Kennel Club Celebrates Volunteers Contributions! Story by Gordon Mayne t the recent Cairns City Kennel Club’s recent Annual General Meeting it wasn’t just the usual business of reports and elections of office bearers, it was an evening more about celebrating the invaluable contribution of the Club’s members. The night kicks off with a social drinks and BBQ dinner where members get to share the success stories of 2017 and plans for the coming year. In 2017 the Club had some major successes, first with the kitchen renovation – thanks to a $33,000 grant from the Queensland Government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund, then followed by the Club celebrating its 50 years of obedience trials. Both events were celebrated with functions attended by State and local government officials and Dogs Queensland representatives.

What drives the Club’s success?

But the success of the Club isn’t about grants or functions, the success lies with the valuable contribution of its members. Whether it be simply cleaning up after an event, feeding the hungry hoards at a trial, or instructing a dog obedience class every week; every member’s contribution is greatly appreciated.

Success is recognising the achievements of all our members, no matter how great or small. Success is diversity, with members encouraged to participate in multiple disciplines – several members compete in dog sports one weekend, then dress up for the show ring the following weekend.

The Club regularly organises social events, throughout the year, where members come together to not only to enjoy each other’s company, but as a way of acknowledging and celebrating their hard work.

Success is consistency, just as much we challenge the old and explore the new, we are consistent in our approach and our leadership.

8

How do we get so many people to attend meetings and events? It’s a number of factors, but key is respect for all members whether they contribute a lot of their time or those how may only be able to spare a little.

Social drinks before the AGM

At the Annual General Meeting success and individual contributions are acknowledge through the presentation of the ‘Friend of the Kennel Club’ awards and Life Membership.

Our agility team regularly put on displays at local events such as school fetes, these are all coordinated by Amber Morey, also a Pet Manners instructor, who also received a Friend of the Kennel Club award. The most prestigious is the award of Life Membership. This year’s recipient goes above and beyond; the Club’s senior Puppy Preschool instructor, Trial Secretary for all of the Club’s agility and obedience trials, an active member of the kitchen renovation project team and is always willing to roll up her sleeves to get the job done. Congratulations to Jean Wilkinson. Jean first joined the Club in 1985 with her Doberman, then some time later started competing in obedience and agility with her Boxer and went on to participate in obedience and agility. Now with her 2 Whippets, Rip and Mac, Jean competes in agility, obedience and rally-o. Congratulations Jean, and thank you for your contribution to the Club.

Food is important at the club (anyone will who has been to a trial or show knows we cook up a fantastic feast) and this year 3 people were presented with a ‘Friend of the Kennel Club’ awards because of their catering prowess – Meade Oswald, Sandra Stanley and Sharon Shone.

The Cairns City Kennel Club is looking forward to a great 2018 with more events planned. The club also looks forward to welcoming members from other clubs to participate in shows and trials held at the grounds.

Yes, if these ladies aren’t in the ring, they are in the kitchen, but also behind the scenes helping out with running events and working bees.

Dances with Dogs Annual Award Presentations t the annual Dog Sports Committee presentation evening held in January, trophies were presented to Lisa Williamson for both the Heelwork to Music (HTM) and Freestyle Dog of the Year awards and to Sharon Clark for the Freestyle Championship title for her Border Collie, Holly (FS.CH Deargban Highland Holly HTM.A, RA). The Dog of the Year awards recognise excellence throughout the year and are based on the highest aggregate across three submitted qualifying certificates in HTM and Freestyle respectively. Lisa’s Cass (Cass Cookies N Cream of Ohutu (Imp NZl) CDX, FS.A, HTM.A) won the Freestyle Dog of the Year. Her younger Border Collie, Clover (Cloverwood Sweet Clover (IID NZl) HTM.S, FS.N) scooped the pool to win the HTM Dog of the Year. Championship titles in both Freestyle and HTM require the dog to attain scores of approximately 90% of the total available points (180 total points in the case of Dances With Dogs - DWD) on a further 7 occasions after completion of the relevant Advanced title; those 7 routines must also be undertaken to at least 3 different pieces of music. Several DWD enthusiasts were also awarded trophies for their Rally Obedience Champion title completed during 2017. They were Coral Pethers and Amber (Papillon), Therese Murchison and Lucy (Yorkshire Terrier) and Ros Smith and Jedda (Australian Kelpie). Although all our DWD award recipients this year were Border Collies, the sport is open to all breeds and we see considerable variety of sizes and breeds at our competitions. As well as the Yorkshire Terrier, Papillon, Border Collies and Australian Kelpies, we have had Labradors, Portugese Water Dogs, Golden Retrievers, German Shorthaired Pointer and Weimaraners from the Gundog breeds; German Shepherds, Belgian Shepherd (Malinois), Finnish Lapphund and Scotch Collies from the working breeds; Poodles both Standard and Miniature; Boxer, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Staffordshire Terrier, Dachshund and Miniature Dachshund. With several dogs on their way to either HTM or Freestyle Champion titles, we look forward to the 2018 year of Dances

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

he origin of the French Bulldog is a mixed tale of rising from revolution, poverty and working the streets, through to aristocracy and internationalism with a little dash of controversy, to the very popular dog who is friend and companion to many in the modern world. One could be forgiven for thinking this is the synopsis of a rather good novel, but it is the history of the endearing little dog now known as the French Bulldog. Where It All Started The French Bulldog originated in England (don’t worry the French part will make sense soon), in the mid-1800s during the industrial revolution when the lacemakers of Nottingham who worked by hand were being made redundant and being replaced by machinery. Rather than be jobless, penniless and reduced to poverty the lacemakers emigrated to France, where traditional lacemaking was still being done by hand and they took with them their miniature bulldogs. Unlike breeders who were breeding for a bigger and heavier dog, the breeders of the miniature bulldogs had developed a smaller, lighter dog, with either upright or rose ears, round foreheads and short underjaws, with a hint of terrier which were very popular with workers, including the lacemakers of Nottingham. Upon arrival in France, the popularity of these little dogs was almost instantaneous and initiated a burgeoning trade of small bulldogs exported from England to France. The Bouledogues Francais, as they were called, became a favourite of the working class including the Parisian streetwalkers. These dogs were also noticed by socialites and the aristocracy who also fell in love with these 'little Bulldogs'. From here the French became the custodians of the breed as the British decided these French Bulldogs were not their thing, and the breed became more uniform and started to exhibit some of the characteristics we see in the French Bulldog now. At this point in time the breed still had the erect 'bat ears' or the 'rose' ears.

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

17

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

Going International and an 'Early' Controversy By the later period of the 19th Century, wealthy Americans travelling abroad, noticed these little bulldogs and began bringing them back to the United States and breeding them. The Americans had a preference for the erect 'bat ears' while the French and British breeders continued to lean towards the 'rose ear'. By the end of the 19th Century, and the 1896 Westminster Dog Show, the French Bulldog entered show ring (at this time not yet recognised as an approved breed by the AKC) but not without controversy. Bat eared and rose eared French Bulldogs were exhibited, but to the consternation of the American exhibitors, the English judge only gave top awards to the rose-eared exhibits. This was the catalyst form the formation of the French Bull Dog Club of America, the first breed club for the French Bulldog, who then proceeded to create their own breed standard which only allowed the bat-eared variety.

18

These dogs were also noticed by socialites and the aristocracy who also fell in love with these 'little Bulldogs'

This was not the end of the controversy however, as at the 1898 Westminster Dog Show, classes were offered for both the bat-eared and rose-eared varieties. This was unacceptable to the American exhibitors who withdrew their dogs, the American judge refused to participate and they all went off and organised their own show – their first specialty show (which incidentally was won by a brindle dog named Dimboolaa). The popularity of the breed was at a massive high at this time until after World War I.

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

A Tumultuous Journey A decline in popularity occurred in the early 20th Century following World War I for several reasons but mainly due to a general decline in purebred dogs during the Depression era in the 1930s. During this period a small number of American and Europeans kept this now rare breed from extinction. The decline continued further during World War II especially in Europe. In the 1950s popularity again stirred for the breed when Amanda West, a breeder from Detroit successfully showed her mostly cream French Bulldogs. Most French Bulldogs were brindle prior to this so with a 'new look'. I should mention that saying Amanda West showed successfully is like saying that Simon Cowell is slightly mean. With her French Bulldogs, she had over 500 group wins, 111 Best In Show awards and 21 consecutive breed wins at Westminster. Even at this point there were still very few French Bulldogs registered but interest had been reborn for this little dog. From the 1980s, a rise in the breed was seen again and this has grown over time to the present day where the French Bulldog is one of the most incredibly popular breeds anywhere.

Half page Ad

At present French Bulldogs are probably close to the top of the tree when it comes to popularity and responsible breeders are committed to continuing to breed great, healthy dogs. Unfortunately, the popularity of the breed has attracted many unscrupulous breeders looking to make a quick buck who have no regard for the health and welfare of their dogs. It is very important that anyone wishing to make a French Bulldog part of their life, does some serious research to ensure that their breeder is a registered and responsible breeder with the Australian National Kennel Council. Any less is compromising themselves and their future companion. Sources: We would like to acknowledge the following sources for this article: 1. One Puppy Two Supplied by Donna Marchiori Many new owners are convinced that a single puppy will be lonely and that two puppies will be much happier together. Some believe that rearing puppies in pairs is easier, expecting to halve the workload rather than double it! Sometimes people will buy litter-siblings, and sometimes they will buy two puppies of similar age from separate litters of either the same or different breeds. New owners should be fully informed of the double expenditure to expect, especially during the first year. They need to know the approximate costs of worming, vaccinating, registering with local authority, desexing or joining ANKC affiliate (as appropriate), microchipping, training costs, fencing and shelter costs, boarding fees and pet insurance, not to mention equipment such as bowls, collars or halters, leashes, car harnesses and toys.

20

These costs will increase of course, should things turn out less than perfect. Prospective owners should also be disabused of any notion of breeding a brother-and-sister pair! If they are insistent on obtaining two puppies, they should also be strongly advised to desex either or both at the appropriate age, to avoid accidental matings. It amazes me how many general public dog owners think it’s okay to breed siblings and who have no idea how to tell if a bitch is on heat.

Breeders and sellers of puppies have a very big responsibility in informing prospective buyers that buying two puppies at once is usually a really bad idea. The long term result is that often one of the dogs is removed (either sold, surrendered or destroyed), one or both dogs being desexed (which may have not been the initial desire of the owners) and it regularly results in aggression between the two dogs, incurring veterinary expense. The very first thing that happens is that yes, the puppies are very happy together as they have comfort from each other.

The owners are certain they’ve done the right thing, which is confirmed as they watch their new puppies sleep together, eat from the same bowl and create adorable-puppymayhem together. This enables the first major problem to occur: the puppies create a very tight bond with each other at exactly the time when they are supposed to become attached to their new owners. From this strong bonding, a second problem arises – two puppies which should have two separate names, but which respond to either name, or worse, to neither name. New owners will describe one puppy as really smart because it leads the way, while the sibling is apparently really dumb or ignorant because it follows or copies the other puppy. That the puppies behave this way is completely natural and breeders will acknowledge that in every litter there’s a pup that leads, there are pups that follow and if you remove a leader from the litter, another puppy will take its place. The next problem is encountered when these puppies present at puppy pre-school or obedience classes by which time the owners are beginning to suspect they took on more than they should as they see the destruction in their backyard. Usually only one owner (often the wife) can come to training, so somehow she is expected to train two puppies and get the same results as her classmates who are training a single puppy.

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

The puppies may be timid, one more so that the other. This isn’t uncommon even with single puppy households, but with dual-puppy households, the more timid puppy has another one to hide behind, and to look to for guidance and support. For this par ticular puppy to learn independence and self-confidence is virtually impossible. It has no need to take the lead because the other pup already shows the way.

If their behaviour is mild enough for their owners to keep them both, the puppies will develop into adults having reached a private agreement. As very little is achieved whilst training two puppies at once, well-meaning instructors will attempt to separate the pair, which results in at least one of the pups, but usually both, being so distressed or distracted by the separation, that any hope of teaching either of them anything in class disappears altogether. Another problem occurs at home when one puppy decides not to share dinner any more. Previously amiable companions suddenly argue over the dinner bowl, so owners begin feeding them from separate bowls. Then, one pup may begin gorging his food, then pushing the other pup away to scoff that dog’s food too!

Owners may then decide to separate the dogs altogether at meal times. The original expectation of two lifelong, happy companions is looking less likely. The owners will see what used to be joyful puppy-play roll over into spats between the dogs which will occur for a thousand reasons that we humans simply don’t understand. The dogs will at all times be at exactly the same point in their development, so they will be teething at the same time, they’ll have sore gums together. They will mature sexually at the same time and share hormonal ups and downs. When one pup’s having a bad time, the other one will be too, just considering two of their major developmental stages. They might argue over toys or being first through the gate, etc., which they couldn’t do if there weren’t two of them, and which they wouldn’t do if one of them was already an adult. If their behaviour is mild enough for their owners to keep them both, the puppies will develop into adults having reached a private agreement. It doesn’t mean that as adults, both of them will be happy dogs because one of them may have to continue to compromise his behaviour for the sake of peace or possibly even his life, if aggression has been a factor. We won’t know.

Member Insight The Queensland Dog World

But what will definitely happen is that one puppy will be more suppressed than the other by sheer force of the other’s personality, and that the owners will suffer because they have two dogs that don’t get on quite as well as they did in the first month they arrived. Or the dogs could actually turn out to be fantastic buddies. In either case, both dogs will be oblivious to their owners as they’re so busy with each other. It is entirely possible for two puppies to become very closely bonded and dependent on each other, without really liking each other very much. If the owners make the decision to part with one of the dogs, either or both of the dogs might fret for the other, not to mention the enormous guilt their owners will feel, having to choose which one to keep. After separation there will be a major adjustment period and the less outgoing of the two dogs may not cope well without the other, even though he wasn’t entirely happy when the other dog was around. Major commitment, patience and retraining will be necessary for both dogs, but owners are already disadvantaged by having lost the opportunity to bond with the dogs during the formative stages. When people are convinced they’re better off with two puppies, it’s important to consider that although anything can happen, we would hope and assume that the two puppies remain in good health and live to be very old together. They will pass away within a short time of each other. This leaves the owners with a double tragedy in a short time.

22

If at least one year for the toy-and-small breeds and about four years for the larger breeds could be left between puppies, then the first dog has a chance to bond closely with his human family, who will of course socialise him to other dogs and experiences whilst he’s young and impressionable. He has the chance to mature, make all his own mistakes, to develop his own personality and confidence without comparison and to become a great leader.

Puppies are much more respectful towards adult dogs than they are towards their litter mates – adult dogs don’t put up with bad behaviour from puppies, their discipline is swift and decisive and the puppy doesn’t have to guess the rules or make up his own! He will then be in a much better position as an adult dog, to welcome and assist in educating a new, much younger canine companion yet still young enough to enjoy and endure the attentions of a puppy. He will be able to teach a puppy rather than compete with it. Puppies are much more respectful towards adult dogs than they are towards their litter mates – adult dogs don’t put up with bad behaviour from puppies, their discipline is swift and decisive and the puppy doesn’t have to guess the rules or make up his own!

Breeders should keep in mind breed reputation, as uninformed owners may blame a pup’s misguided behaviour on the breed. For instance, an owner who has chosen to buy a Rottie pup and a Border Collie pup of the same age to keep each other company, might say “Rotties play rough and Border Collies are such wimps!” To a naïve pet owner, this may be what appears to be going on, because nobody told them that getting two puppies the same age was very complicated, never mind two puppies of such differing proportions, playstyles and natures. There definitely are households which have successfully reared two puppies of the same age. Either they overcame some of the problems I’ve mentioned, or they were fantastic people who were aware of and committed to the extra workload and made sure that in the formative months the puppies received time-out from each other every day, and were heavily and happily socialised both individually and together, all over the place. It’s important for breeders to honestly and fully inform prospective owners of the multiple drawbacks of two puppies at once and to question people about the ages of puppies and dogs they already own. This will save people much heartache, as well as save many dogs from unhappy lives.

Judges' Resumé: Mark Johnston Mark showed his first boxer as a child in 1976, and has been actively involved with this fabulous breed ever since. From those early beginnings, Mark became the driving force in the family's interest in Boxers. Blueprint Boxers have gone on to become one of the most successful kennels in Australia, having produced a long line of breed club CC and BIS winners. He has also had an interest in Miniature Schnauzers. Mark is an all breeds judge and is married to Dayna.

Dayna Johnston Dayna has had a lifetime of involvement breeding, exhibiting and loving purebred dogs, born into a family with a background with Scottish and Irish Terriers, and English Cocker Spaniels. She has bred Australian Silky Terriers for the last 37 years under the Gayplad prefix. Dayna has also bred Pomeranians and Pekingese and breeds Miniature Poodies in partnership under the famous Coifico Prefix.

David Staines David started showing Dalmatians in 1976 and then started breeding under the LITEFLITE Prefix. He has also shown and bred Bullmastiffs and has enjoyed many major BEST IN SHOW awards. As an Architect he has always appreciated ’the well designed' and ’the well built'. In judging there is no greater thrill for him than being able to reward top quality dogs of all breeds - dogs that have been well bred to be well built.

Lance Wright Lance is a well known in Qld as a breeder and exhibitor of Standard Poodles under the Voila prefix. He has also had a background with the Pekingese breed.
