The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for January 2017 Happy new year to everyone! 2017 is set to be a very eventful year for Dogs Queensland. Our Director elections will soon be under way, and a number of major projects will also begin early this year. There is a great deal of work to be done, and the Board is committed to continuing to push our organisation forward over the next year. Members Forum The Members' Forum held last month at Durack was a very productive meeting. Greg McDougall from the Biosecurity Department of the Queensland Government addressed the meeting about the Animal Management (Protecting Puppies) and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2016. A number of important and relevant issues were brought forward and discussed. The Board will continue to update members on our progress with continuing negotiations with the State Government in relation to legislation amendments. Relocation of the Dogs Queensland Office Last month, members were sent a survey in relation to the relocation of the Dogs Queensland office from Fortitude Valley to our grounds at Durack. The closing date for this feedback is required by the 6th of January 2017. As this date is fast approaching, I encourage members to take part in the survey and have your say about the possible relocation of the office. Assuming the member feedback is positive, the Board will ensure that this project is progressed in the most efficient and effective manner. Gambling and Community Benefit Grant I am very pleased to be able to advise members that Dogs Queensland has been successful in being a awarded a grant, under the Gambling and Community Benefits Grants process, for the amount of $31,800. These funds will be used for the much need upgrade to the toilet facility at Durack. Service Delivery Review progress Implementation of recommendations from the Service Delivery Review will continue within the Dogs Queensland office. Board Matters will continue to consult with the Board, General Manager and staff about this project, to ensure a timely and efficient transition toward our newly structured office processes. Details of these processes will be provided to members once they have been fully worked through. Here’s to a productive and prosperous 2017 for Dogs Queensland!

Notice to advertisers The Trade Practices Act came into force on 1st October 1974. Certain provisions of the act relating to consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers of advertisements. In view of the obvious impossibility of our ensuring that advertisements submitted for publication comply with the act, advertisers themselves need to ensure that the provisions of the act are strictly complied with. In cases of doubt, advertisers are advised to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material.

RETRIEVING & FIELD TRIAL “HALL OF FAME” 2017 Nominations In the first seventeen years of elections, the Australian National Kennel Council Ltd has received nominations for 50 dogs and 25 people to be considered for induction into the Retrieving & Field Trial Hall of Fame. From the nominations received 28 outstanding dogs and 18 exceptional people have been inducted. The criteria for the two categories for selection are the following: 1. 1. Outstanding Gundogs (must be permanently retired from further competition and have not competed for the past 12 months, or be deceased) (a) Their record as a winning dog i.e., CLUB – STAKE – DATE – JUDGE PLACE and/or (b) Their production record. (c) The eligibility for a dog should be based on its entire competitive career and previous record as a producer, not merely for a particular win or for a heroic deed within the field and retrieving trial sphere. (d) Subject to the receipt of a formal application, dogs that have been awarded the title of Grand Champion and have gained a total number of points equal to, or greater than, twice the total number required for that award, shall automatically be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Such applications must include full particulars and a brief resume of the dog's career. (e) Subject to the receipt of a formal application, dogs winning at least two National Championships in the same discipline shall automatically be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Such applications must include full particulars and a brief resume of the dog's career. Prominent Persons: Their record of a broad combination of accomplishments as: (a) Club official (b) Judge (c) Owner (d) Handler The distinction of nomination should be accorded to those who have made outstanding contributions to the field or retrieving game. Nominees should be givers to the sport and not takers. Nominations are now being called for the seventeenth year of elections. In addition to applications submitted in relation to Outstanding Gundogs 1 (d) and 1(e), a maximum of two other outstanding gundogs and two prominent persons may be elected each year. Nomination: Clubs or Members may nominate DOGS and PEOPLE considered worthy of awards, including full details of accomplishments within the above categories and with verification. In the case of dogs, nominations should include the full name, title, owner and date of birth. [Please note it is a condition of nomination that the nominator/s provides accurate written material supporting the nomination. In the absence of such accurate supporting material, or should the supporting material later prove to be inaccurate in areas of significance, the Selection Panel for the ANKC Ltd Retrieving & Field Trial Hall of Fame reserves the right to reconsider its decision and if appropriate, delete the name of the Prominent Person or Distinguished Dog from the list of inductees.] Nominations shall close on the 31 May, 2017 at respective Member Body offices for forwarding to ANKC Ltd. Please use the proforma nomination forms that are available from all Member Body offices and the ANKC Ltd website at www.ankc.org.au/HallOfFame/?id=1096

Rally-O Sub-Committee Where to perform that Station? There is still a little confusion with newer handlers as to where to actually perform the exercises in relation to the sign / cone. The Rules say, “Signs will be placed to the right of the Handler’s path except for... change in direction, which... will be directly in front of the Handler. Exercises using cones may require entry with the sign on the left. The sign will be placed at the first cone. Except for exercises requiring entry with the sign on the left, exercises are performed near the designated signs, either directly in front, or in the front and to the left of said signs (Signs 20 and 40 are performed just past the sign).” So what does all that mean? If you follow the sample course to the left, you will see that the arrows show the correct path you should take. Exercises should be carried out where the red circle is (for the most part roughly where the arrow heads appear on the map). There is a nice straight path from the Start and past stations 1, 2 and 3. Note that Station 2 is the 360 Left – this is NOT a change of direction sign – once you complete the exercise you continue in the same direction – so the exercise should be carried out with the sign on the right as with most other signs. Station 3 is Exercise #20 which is performed after the sign and while not an obvious change of direction, your path will move to the right. Stations 4, 7, 8 and 9 are the change of direction stations in this course. If you notice the arrows on the course map, then you will see that the signs should be right in your path as you approach so the exercises are done directly in front of the station. Of course, sometimes it doesn’t work out so neatly because there are signs, cones and other 'obstacles' on a Rally-O course that might get in the way so the path may have to veer slightly around them. As per the Rules, you also must (for most stations) carry out the exercises before the sign, if you go past the sign, you should be scored an IP. Dogs Queensland also recommend that the 'team' execute the station within 600mm of the sign – this means that either the handler or the dog should complete at least part of the exercise within 600mm of the sign (e.g. if it is a Right Turn then the Handler wouldn’t need to get too close to the sign as they would crowd the dog into the sign holder and lose points for Handler Error).

This includes the Start sign, make sure you and your dog are clear of the sign before you start. However (just to be confusing), make sure you go completely past the Finish sign before you stop and congratulate yourself The Queensland Recommendations, along with other articles and information, can be found on the Rally-O DVD if you haven’t bought one yet. Information for the DVD can be found on the Obedience Queensland website at: www.obedienceqld.org/DVD.htm Also don’t forget once you get your Novice title that you have to get your dog measured before you can compete in Advanced A. And when filling out entries, some entry forms have 'Height at Shoulder' and some have 'Jump Height'. The rules actually say 'Jump Height' so please be clear which height you are using to help make the Trial Secretaries job easier.
Happy New Year to All from the Conformation Judges Committee The first of this year’s theory examinations is only a matter of weeks away. Best wishes for a successful outcome to those trainees participating. The Conformation Judges Committee has recently received enquiries from some Kennel Clubs regarding the fee that Judges are expected to charge. There have been a few occasions where Judges have charged what appear to be excessive fees, considering their experience. Unfortunately, we cannot control the fee that Judges ask for. However, Clubs can refuse to accept the contract if they feel that the fee is unacceptable.
Hope this helps. Rally-O Sub Committee
There have also been instances of trainee Judges displaying unsportsmanlike behaviour by refusing to return to compete in ‘class of breed’ and/or ‘class in group’ after failing to win Best of Breed. This is not acceptable. A reminder to all trainee Judges to utilise the Dogs Queensland Library. There is heaps of breed information available.

Corporal ADAM EXELBY
Love me, love my dog! Written by George Hulse PL Adam Exelby was born in Brisbane in August 1977. Adam spent a couple of years in the Australian Army Reserve until he joined the Australian Regular Army in 2003. He qualified as a doggie and was teamed-up with EDD KYLIE. Adam and KYLIE deployed to Afghanistan in 2006 supporting the reconstruction group. The reconstruction group built infrastructural assets for the Afghani people. This meant that the patrols that protected this group did not need to go deep into Taliban territory and so there was not a lot of opportunity for Adam's team to locate improvised explosive devices and other items of interest. After seven months, Adam and KYLIE RTA at the end of their rotation. Adam had formed a very close bond with EDD KYLIE and when she was discharged in 2007, Adam was able to take the dog home as a member of his family. However, EDD KYLIE had been around males for the majority of her life and needed time to get used to the idea of Adam having another Kylie in his life. Adam’s fiancé’s name is also Kylie. The bond between the two Kylies did not happen quickly, but eventually, the two Kylies became good mates. So much so that when Adam and his fiancé Kylie were married, EDD KYLIE became the wedding ring bearer. This event hit the newspapers and the Kylie-KYLIE story featured in the media of the time. It must be the first time that a war veteran EDD carried the wedding rings at a wedding. Kind of like a ‘best man’? Well - kinda sorta.

Coton de Tulear Madagascar is the native home of this smart little coton dog

here are many stories about the Coton de Tulear. Apparently, 15th century pirates and trading ships transported the Bichon Tenerife and Reunion as rat dogs, who mated creating the Coton de la Reunion.
During the 17th century, the Coton’s ancestors became pets to native Merina tribes and given as gifts to the Merina nobility. They were so prized, in 1974 the Coton de Tulear was honoured with a stamp proclaiming them the "Royal Dog of Madagascar".
It is thought a boat sank off Madagascar’s Tulear coastline and a few small white dogs swam to shore. Another version, the ship's rat dogs mixed with the local dog, creating the origins of the Coton de Tulear.

No smell No shedding Very healthy Small but sturdy Intelligent Resilient Good with children, visitors and other animals Easy care coat Suited to an apartment
Overseas Coton owners show their Cotons, take them into the Obedience ring, the Agility arena, they take them Dancing and fun places like the beach, the pool, hiking/walking, boating and even snowboarding. We decided to share the wonder that is the Coton de Tulear with Australians wanting someone special in their lives. Our Coton family has grown! Cotonbrie Gypsy, Carbonebianco Jasper, Carbonebianco Luna, Carbonebianco Mille Fleur, Carbonebianco Raggamuffin, Carbonebianco Quantana (arriving February 2017), and eight gorgeous Cotonrun puppies born to Cotonbrie Gypsy and Carbonebianco Luna (pictured below).
The Coton de Tulear ticked ALL my boxes! We were a happy family of 4 and I thought contented until Gypsy arrived, in our three-bedroom apartment on the 3rd floor of the 10-story Duet Apartments, Singapore. Wow! Life changed for the better! The joy and unconditional love she brought into our lives has been priceless. Her humour and intelligence has made her the best company. In 2008, a tiny white bundle came off a flight from Italy, instantly winning a place in our hearts. Nothing we had read or researched prepared us for ‘Coton reality’. Gypsy was much more than expected! The smartest dog at puppy school, she impressed Waggies instructor, Patrick, and helped me with our training. We were the 'A' team!

After having a Coton, how could you have a different breed? They truly are unique - Pamela, retired Breeder/handler, new mum to Cotonrun Mani
The magical Coton nature endeared Gypsy to everyone she met. Overseas she was very popular with a bustling social calendar.
Carbonebianco Luna 26/9/16
In Brisbane, she causes a stir wherever she goes. Always the questions: “Where can I get one?” or “I saw this breed overseas, loved them, where can I get one?” The answer was: “You can’t.”

The First Australian Born Coton de Tulears Helping Paws vet, David, helped begin our Australian born Coton story. Belinda’s steady hand delivered Cotonrun Pierre Joly and Phryne. My daughters, Emma and Isabella, and my neighbour Julie, helped bring the C-section puppies to life, while I stood by, a blubbering mess, as Belinda, elbow deep in C-section surgery, calmly reassured me. The Helping Paws team have been great!
Est. 1977
Our puppies are going into wonderful homes. A few of their stories below. It was love at first sight for mum of 10, Sue and first-born Coton, Pierre Joly, when they met. Pierre snuggled into Sue’s arms, and when he looked up at me, I knew she was his new mum. After five days at home Sue says "where's the paper?" and Pierre goes and gets it. When she says: "Where's Panda? (the cat) Pierre finds her and sits where she is.

Breeding Cotons It took years and lots of research to get the Coton de Tulear recognised in Australia, find a trustworthy quality international breeder who was prepared to put in the effort needed to export to Australia and set up the infrastructure Logan Council required for us to become breeders. The 2015 Dogs Queensland Member Education Programme was invaluable with resources I continue to use. Our international breeders, Ferenc and Barbara, are extremely supportive, filling in the gaps. There is a heart-breaking side to this story, the impact of importation. Jasper and Luna, having enjoyed success on the European show circuit, with Jasper winning ‘World Minor Puppy’ 2015, both suffered extensive coat damage and sores.
Covered in nasty sores
Extreme matting to whole coat
Initially, we thought the damage occurred in quarantine. However, our latest arrival in November 2016, Raggamuffin (male from different lineage to Jasper), had his coat hacked en-route.
Lower and side areas hacked
Coming off the European Show circuit, having won his Hungarian Championship, Raggamuffin’s coat was attacked, en-route to Australia, with scissors. Thankfully, he has enough coat coverage to enjoy our great outdoors. I mpor ting is a costly, risk y business for the dog, exporter and importer. It can be dreadfully upsetting. To date, Mille Fleur, our tri-colour, is the only one to make it through intact.

Continued from page 23 On a cheerful note, the kindness Australian Quarantine, a terrific team, have extended us and our dogs has been a welcome respite to the devastating condition of our new family members. Cotonrun has spared future Coton breeders the same experience. With Ferenc’s help, we have carefully set up independent complementary male and female lineages to produce excellent dogs and support future breeding in Australia. Anyone interested in breeding Coton de Tulears are welcome to call Michelle on 0419 123 455.
What Makes A Great Show Coton? Ferenc, Carbonebianco Kennel, Breeder/Handler and Trainee Judge shared a few thoughts on choosing show quality Coton de Tulears, from a judging perspective:
Pictured above: Quantana World Minor Puppy 2016 Arriving Cotonrun 2017
Hi Dear Michelle, Well I can give you some aspect for the correct judging of the Coton. For the first vision, you can see the coat length, the top-line, the tail set, the neck and the head-form of the Coton. The judging of this breed is 60 % the coat (length and quality) and 40 % the rest. Very important is the character of the dog and the expressive eyes. The empty eyes are absolutely not tolerated. Here in Europe, the Judges accept the 7-7.5 kg weight (of males) (15-17 lb). In the North States, they have a tendency (bad) to accept also the 18-20 lb weight, but this is too much! On the important big Shows, the acceptable weight: 15-17lb. The quality of the coat: Really coton texture, not curly, not silky, not very thin and not heavy! The colour is tolerated on the head and on the backside... but not too much. The dominant colour is the white. Of course, before 1 year of age, the colour much more tolerated, because so many colour Cotons will finally whiten. But the colour of the Coton is a long book. The top-line: Very important is the top-line of the Coton. Going to the back, easily rise. This top-line contour needs to be seen always in the first vision. With this can play much with grooming, because also for a flat top-line Coton can give a vision of the right top-line with special brushing.
24 - January 2017
The tail in action always up and easily leans toward the back. The curly (pig) tail is a default, also the hung down tail. The well- muscled, elegant neck is very important. In movement, the front and the back legs are parallel. The nice, well-muscled chest - it's important! A too narrow chest is a default. The correct Coton is playful, intelligent, always attentive. The FCI standard accept all the 3 type of bites (scissor, reverse scissor, pliers bite), but the acknowledged breeders accept only the scissor bite. The rest is only for pet. So many FCI Judges accept the 3 types of bite, but the best Judges take out the reverse bite Cotons from the ring. Very important is the dark pigmentation. We accept only the black nose and eye rings and lips! The dark brown, the standard accepts also. We prefer only the black! The Coton is a white coat breed, but keeping for a long time, the dark black pigmentation you need to use in the breeding colour, boys or girls! If anybody always breed white with white and again and again after some generation they will lose the dark pigments! In movement: The Coton moves lively, airy and full of energy! - HUGS! Pet Therapy ‘An Apple-A-Day’ might keep the doctor away, whereas it is scientifically proven a dog helps keep the doctor away. The benefits of interaction between a family or patient and a dog has seen dog therapies increase in family homes, residential aged care settings, retirement living, hospitals, schools and community care, and rehabilitation centres and hospices.
Bred as a companion, the Coton is called the anti-stress dog, because being with them lifts your spirits!
The Coton is exceptionally healthy, with a pure hypoallergenic non-shedding coton coat, so no smell or hairy mess, an added benefit for allergy or asthma suffers. As companion/assistance/support dogs, they are at home in a unit/ townhouse or family home. Cotonrun Casper will be trained to work in hospitals and home assistance and Max is going into an assistance/support home. Cotonrun and Rico Erwin, with his young Coton pup, Victorious Knight, will be training in service and assistance. Very exciting times ahead for the Australian Cotons!
Busy Times Ahead
The Coton de Tulear’s innate empathy, intelligence, friendly character, desires to please, unconditional acceptance and focus on people means they’re used worldwide as assistance dogs/pet therapy dogs. Their intelligence and problem solving ability make them the ideal choice for people needing medical alerts, emotional support and assistance dogs to help with turning lights on and off and retrieving items, etc.
Cotonrun teamed up with Julia Grainger from K9 Events and Entertainment at the Royal Adelaide Pet Centre. Jasper taught children how to say hello to an unknown K9s, how to groom him, commands to walk him and all about Coton loves and snuggles. Jasper was so popular, we are invited back for 2017 – well done Jasper!

More the Coton de Tulear is so much more! Written by Michelle Sleight he three-in-one dog, my Cotons snuggle up on my lap, have a cuddle and curl up on my bed. Great companions, they’re happy having coffee, making a trip to Bunnings or visiting XXXX Island with Dad. Great babysitters, they play for hours with my nephews, keeping a watchful eye. Cotons are loyal, not territorial. Everyone is welcome, human or animal. You can steal my television or anything else, BUT seriously threatened or harm us, look out! They will protect us!
Incredibly sensitive, they always know when a kiss or cuddle is needed and are an endless source of love and joy! The Coton is famous for its intelligence, able to tell the difference between harmless fun and a serious threat. An excellent guard dog!

While living in the Philippines, I chose to walk the short distance home from the shopping centre, with my 2 young children, friend and Gypsy, rather than sweat it out in the car with tired grumpy children. Two men were fighting on the other-side of the road, one took an interest in an ex-pat with a handbag (guaranteed to have cash) and started to cross a very congested road to get to me. Gypsy went on guard, stopping him in his tracks! When he turned and walked away, Gypsy relaxed and we walked home safely. Jasper is the perfect gentleman. When the girls get up at night, he escorts them wherever they go, and back to their beds. Gypsy guards the top of the stairs. Mille and Luna snuggle close unless there is cause for concern, then they’re all action. We are well looked after and loved! Incredibly sensitive, they always know when a kiss or cuddle is needed and are an endless source of love and joy! Photo credits: Supplied by Michelle Sleight
