The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for July 2017 Queensland Dog Breeder Register As members would be aware, Dogs Queensland has been granted ‘Approved entity’ status under the Animal Management (Protecting Puppies) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016, which officially commenced on the 26th of May 2017. Members will be allocated with a specific breeder supply number, which, in accordance with the law, must be identified whenever a dog is given away, supplied, sold or advertised for sale. The format of the supply number is that of your allocated Dogs Queensland breeder member number. So far, of our approximate 4,200 breeder members, 1,600 have provided their permission to provide their details to Biosecurity, those that haven’t have been followed up. Ekka – 2017 Brisbane Royal Show The Ekka is drawing closer by the day, and I hope that our members will once again come out to support one of our top events on the Queensland show calendar, entries have now closed and are up around the 2,300 mark. Our Magazine, PR and Media Committee has been working tirelessly to promote the event, and put together another outstanding show bag, which will again be sold at the Dogs Queensland stand. Running the stand during the Ekka is a massive job, and it would be great if more members could step forward to assist in sharing the workload. If any members are able to volunteer some of their time to assist in the running of the stand, it would be greatly appreciated. Anyone interested can email their details to Helen Mackie at: marketing@ dogsqueensland.org.au

The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
Office Relocation And Construction At Durack As many members would have seen, we have recently had a Wireless Internet Dish at Durack on top of the Main Building Roof. This is a solution that was necessary as there are only two active lines currently going into the property, they are for phones/ADSL and they are copper lines. Telstra are currently phasing out copper lines and are reluctant to put in extra copper lines. Fibre Cable is too expensive and at the time of the Board decision to install, there was no scheduled NBN at Durack. The solution was to utilise ‘Ethernet over Wireless’ and by mounting a dish on top of the Function Room Roof, which has been done via a company called GCOMM. From there, the internet is cabled as normal to the Office. A benefit of this is that Wireless repeaters can be placed on the roof so the whole of Durack will be Wifi accessible to members. The construction of the Dogs Queensland office at Durack has recommenced and we are looking at a mid to late July completion date. I will keep you posted on the date that the Office will commence operation as soon as this is known, there may however be the need to cease operations for a 2-3 day period but we will keep this to the absolute minimum. CANINE RESEARCH FOUNDATION GRANTS AWARDED FOR
2017 The Canine Research Foundation is a Public Charitable Trust to support research conducted at Australian universities from funds generated via the levy on puppy registrations, fund raising functions, tax-deductible donations and bequests from the public. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide funding for research directed at improving canine health. Canine health refers to research into disease and disease related processes, and/or the prevention of injury and/or disease. The CRF was founded by the VCA in 1992 and 111 research grants have been awarded for projects through to those commencing in 2017. Just over 1.3 million dollars of funding has been distributed since 1992 for research. Funding to the CRF is received from all ANKC Ltd Member Bodies. Current trustees of the Canine Research Foundation are: Professor Brian Corbitt (President), Mr Roger Bridgford, Ms Louise Brodie, Dr Steve Holloway, Associate Professor Jan West, and Mr James Rodger. In 2017 five grants were successful in receiving funding and summaries of the projects are outlined in the following.

Distribution of genetic mutations associated with degenerative myelopathy (Dr Jayne McGhie, University of Queensland) Canine degenerative myelopathy (DM) is a non-treatable disabling neurodegenerative disorder characterised by progressive motor neuron loss and paralysis that culminates in death (commonly by euthanasia). It affects mature dogs in a range of breeds. Recently a mutation in the canine superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene has been identified as strongly linked to the disease. Genetic testing offering a means to rapidly identify non-clinically affected dogs that are potentially at risk. This knowledge can be used to make breeding decisions to reduce the incidence of DM. German Shepherd and related Shepherd breeds have a high incidence of DM. The current project aims to test non clinical working shepherd dogs and associated breeding shepherd populations (including any pups) to: (a) estimate the frequency of the deleterious mutation for DM, together with a selection of other known diagnostic markers of disease in these breeds, and (b) inform future breeding strategies to reduce the incidence of this disease in the population. In collaboration with the Queensland Police Force, we will use state-of-theart genetic testing equipment (Sequenom) and expertise within the University of Queensland to genotype a random sample of 150-200 working dogs, breeders or pups. Expected outcomes beyond the aims above include development of a testing capability for disease diagnosis and preventative medicine that can be applied across a range of breeds in Australia, longitudinal study of the health and well-being of these working animals, and creation of a genomic biobank of DNA for German Shepherds for future research purposes.
Bacterial vaccine against canine pyometra (Dr Natalie Krekeler, University of Melbourne) Pyometra (pus in the uterus) is a life-threatening infectious disease in bitches. Up to 25% of un-spayed bitches develop the disease before they reach ten years of age, and most of them die if they are left untreated. However, even if they are treated, most bitches will lose their reproductive potential, as a surgical intervention (spaying) is often the treatment of choice by veterinarians. Escherichia coli (E. coli) are the bacteria most commonly isolated.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
So far no preventative measures other than spaying are available. In a previous study we have tested a killed vaccine against certain bacterial virulence factors, which did not lead to the desired antibody response in the animals. This was most likely due to the fact that a killed vaccine was used. We now propose to generate al live-attenuated E. coli vaccine using a novel technique. Inactivating certain virulence genes in these bacterial strains has shown effective in a previous experiment with similar E. coli causing disease in birds. It allows using a live bacterial strain as a vaccine candidate, which is more likely to raise a satisfactory antibody response than a killed vaccine.
A safety trial of next generation cancer vaccines and targeted IL-15 plasmid therapy (Dr Christopher Weir, Kolling Institute) Approximately 1 in 3 pet dogs will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. While some canine cancers can be treated with surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, expense and availability may prevent many dogs receiving treatment. Novel immune based therapies provide another potential weapon to fight canine cancer. We have developed a next generation cancer vaccine (NGV). The vaccine presents a patient's own tumour proteins back to the immune system together with a unique stimulant (RZ-1) and an adjuvant (Advax). Pre clinically we have shown this new vaccine approach is superior in efficacy to the currently marketed canine cancer vaccine. We have also developed targeted plasmid IL-15 therapy which is delivered directly into the tumour to stimulate immune cells inside. The next step is to show safety of the NGV with or without IL-15 therapy in canine cancer patients. Canine patients with externally accessible tumours who have failed or have no option of standard of care therapy will be offered a place in the trial. Dogs will be placed into groups 1) Vaccine only 2) Combined Vaccine and Inter tumoural vaccine 3) IL-15 therapy 4) IL-15 + Vaccine The dogs will be assessed for adverse reactions to the vaccine/ IL 15 therapy during and after the treatment period and monitored for tumour progression or regression. Blood samples will be collected to assess immune cell levels and for cytokine analysis. Dogs showing no adverse reactions to the therapies and perceived benefit will be offered further treatments after a period of 3 to 6 months.

Continued from page 13
Biomarkers of canine glaucoma – early detection and disease progression (Dr Andrew White, University of Sydney) Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness worldwide with the incidence in humans similar to rates reported in dogs. The pathophysiology of glaucoma is complex, multifactorial and incompletely understood. Progress in our understanding of the disease, its management and the prevention of progressive vision loss, has therefore been slow. The use of dogs over rodents as models of disease in ophthalmology has advantages including a larger eye that lends itself easily to surgical manipulation and a visual system that is adapted to vision in both day and night. In order to determine whether dogs can be used as an effective model of disease of glaucoma in human patients, we must determine how to monitor disease progression and/or response to treatment objectively and determine similarities and differences between the species. We will investigate several clinically relevant potential biomarkers in canine glaucoma. A biomarker is a measurable anatomic, physiologic, biochemical, or molecular parameter indicative of a normal or pathologic process, disease state, or of a response to an intervention. Biomarkers might include physiological measurements, blood tests, genetic, metabolic data, or measurements from images. We will look to objectively measure disease progression and determine if and when glaucoma and its progression can be detected earlier and more accurately than it currently is. This will subsequently allow development of clinical trials and interventions targeted at a much earlier stage, with potential for greater effects, compared to what is achieved with current treatments.
Imaging and monitoring osteosarcoma with a novel radiolabelled peptide (Assoc Prof Chiara Palmieri, University of Queensland) Canine osteosarcoma is a common and aggressive bone cancer in dogs, with high mortality rate and less than 20% of affected patients surviving more than 2 years with standard therapy. The lack of specific and successful drugs and the prohibitive costs of treatment for the management of this tumour in dogs indicate the need for new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
14 - July 2017
Cancer cells express many proteins that can be used as molecular targets. c-Met is a specific protein highly expressed in canine osteosarcoma and related to tumour growth and invasion. Developing a non-invasive and safe tool that could measure the expression levels of c-Met in real time would enable early diagnosis of canine osteosarcoma and facilitate the mechanisms to monitor the impact of treatment using new c-Met therapies. We will use a targeted diagnostic agent specific for c-Met to imaging and monitoring canine osteosarcoma in vivo. The key aims of this project will be the validation of this new imaging agent for osteosarcoma in dogs which will improve tumour monitoring (to identify residual cancer cells after therapy) and therapy selection (to identify patients who require further and/or different treatments). Further information on the Canine Research Foundation can be found at: http://oz.dogs.net.au/crf/ Updates provided on the CRF FB page: https://web.facebook. com/AustralianCanineResearchFoundation/ Assoc Prof Jan West, Trustee Canine Research Foundation April, 2017

Ayla and Jolly This is Aylas story ine years ago I was diagnosed with epilepsy, I have clonic tonic seizures or more commonly known as grandmal seizures. About two and a half years ago I ended up in hospital with having over 30 seizures within twelve hours. That was the moment I had decided that I needed some kind of help. I decided that having an assistance dog would be perfect. Jolly is an assistance dog for my epilepsy, most of the time she tells me when I might have a seizure, while I'm having a seizure Jolly will lay up behind me so I don't roll back, she will also comfort me as I start to come around so I can focus on her and not panic and go back into another one. Jolly is in the process of learning to fetch my phone so I can call for help when I need it afterwards. Jolly's second job as an assistance dog is to calm as I have suffered from major anxiety because of how uncontrollable my seizures were and had been known to not leave the house for days even when I have needed to. Jolly helps me find that confidence I need to live a life at all. Training with her is life changing for me. I now have the confidence to leave my home, have a job, drive a car and live with independence again. I'm so grateful to have her, Jolly is more than just a dog, she's my assistance dog, she's my independence and she's my best friend.

Grooming the Collie Written by Cheryl Lecourt One of the oldest of breeds originating in Scotland and Northern England, the Collie was seen and sponsored by Queen Victoria and thus went from being just the Shepherd's Dog, to a loving family dog to even the royal and rich. Known for his elegant and beautiful appearance, the Collie in both coat forms, is true to many of the Scottish and northern English breeds requiring a harsh outer coat allowing him to withstand the bitter winters and outdoor working life. His dense undercoat protected and kept him warm and dry. Collies are generally recognisable as popularised in the TV series 'Lassie' as Sables, though they are just as lovely in their Tri-Colour and Blue Merle coats. This is a breed with great appeal, great beauty and quiet dignity.

To present this dog for the show ring, it is a joy to be able to work with such a magnificent and abundant coat and allow it to display all the glory of the silhouette of this magnificent breed. The secret being always, to retain texture to the coat to exhibit the hallmarks of his working ancestry. He is an outdoors dog and worked in damp, harsh and rough terrain. Like the sheep he herded, his coat also had to be impervious to the elements. Our aim when grooming this dog, is to be able to regularly bath and blow dry, maintain the texture and keep the coat hydrated at all times. I like a lot of lift to this coat for the show ring and finishing with a nice tear drop shape to the ruff and bib. For best fullness to the coat, shampoo the main body of the coat with Plush Puppy Body Building Shampoo diluted 5:1 (i.e. 5 parts water to one part shampoo) for even dispersion and economy of use. Nothing gets volume to the coat like this shampoo. It is fabulous. For the white areas, use P.P. Whitening Shampoo diluted again 5:1. For the Blue Merles and the Tri's, you can mix 1/2 B.B. Shampoo and 1/2 Whitening Shampoo to get lift and tone all at once on the main part of the coat and then use the Whitening Shampoo only on any white areas. The Whitening does not lighten but rather tones, reducing any unwanted warm tones. Thus a rusty reddish tone to some of the black coated areas, can be deepened and the reddish hues reduced using the Whitening Shampoo. P.P. Black Opal Shampoo diluted 50/50 can be used on badly faded black areas of the coat being mindful not to get it on the white areas. I am a great one for using different shampoos in different areas of the coat to get maximum effect rather than using one overall shampoo.
ANKC/CHEDS & PennHIP scoring
Plush Puppy shampoos do more than just clean - they really do something. They are outcome oriented for direct result. For the Smooth Collies, choose P.P. All Purpose Shampoo for shine, diluted 5:1 and you can also mix 1/2 this and 1/2 Whitening Shampoo for reducing unwanted reddish tones or for Blue Merle coats to gain shine and tone. Now to maintain that texture, don't use conditioner on the main body of the coat. Conditioner will flatten and soften. Use P.P. Seabreeze Oil diluted 1 dspn to 4 lites/1gal warm water and saturate the coat to the skin using a large sponge. Leave in and do not rinse. This will give tremendous healthy vigour to the coat and yet keep all that harshness to the coat.

Continued from page 23 Just what is needed for a herding dog's coat! If you are requiring a lot of coat, then add 1 tbspn Volumising Cream in with the oil and water mix to save time. Great for out of coat situations or when you just want more coat and who doesn't? For the hips and pants where you have greater lengths of coat and want the coat to hang, you need to add a very weak application of conditioner remembering this flattens and softens, so you will then have to do something after that to keep texture. Ok, so mix tablespoon P.P. Silk Protein Conditioner to 1 litre/1quart warm water and saturate the pants and hips. Leave in and do not rinse - this is a weak application so saves time doing it this way, gets even dispersion and ensures you can repeat the routine every time (the Collie Smooth does not need this). So now you have the Rough Collie, oiled on his main body coat and conditioned on his hips and pants and perhaps the featherings to keep from tangling. Already you are building the silhouette rather than just cleaning only. Now blow dry using the heel of one hand and holding the nozzle of the turbo dryer hose working the hair of the coat against the growth to get maximum lift at the roots. This also removes any dead undercoat keeping the coat rolling most of the time without the usual heavy seasonal shedding. Do this often enough, and we do this weekly, you can keep an adult male in showable coat for a few years. As the dead coat is removed, the new is allowed to grow. It also helps prevent hot spots by never allowing the coat to felt underneath keeping the skin clear. Felted undercoat may work well in snow and freezing winds to protect the dog, but in most climates away from the Scottish landscape, the climates are usually more clement and we have to do different things to keep these coats looking good and not overheating with the skin getting hot and damp in humidity. Now I mentioned earlier, that as conditioner flattens and softens we need to address the hip and pants area that we applied the weak conditioner application to. Once the coat is dry, sprinkle P.P. Powder Puff for Terriers onto a brush and lightly flip through the areas where the conditioner was applied. You don't need much. Just a hint. Now feel the coat and add more if needed till you get that harsh, outdoor, weather resistant coat. This is instant texture at the flick of the wrist! Amazing!
24 - July 2017
For the ruff and bib, use P.P. Powder Puff Regular. This area has been oiled and dried with Volumising Cream in it and you are now seeking to get that nice finish and texture into the coat without going overboard. Again add a sprinkle onto the brush and each time, work through the area till the coat has that sit up lift. You can keep the shape and mold to a perfect shape, by warming on the fingers a tiny touch of P.P. Sit N Stay till it crosses over from wet sticky to a dry sticky. Now plunge your hands into the ruff and bib area and grasp each section at a time at the root area and then slide your fingers without opening them, up the length of the hair to just about 3 inches away from the tips. Thus the ends tip over creating that lovely tear drop shape. You do this all around the edges of the area keeping an eye on the overall outline.
Our aim when grooming this dog, is to be able to regularly bath and blow dry, maintain the texture and keep the coat hydrated at all times. I like a lot of lift to this coat for the show ring and finishing with a nice tear drop shape to the ruff and bib. Use the blow dryer to bring out the hair between the pads and trim off the long pieces to neaten the foot. Lastly trim the hocks and around the ears and along the lip line. Powder Puff Regular around the legs expands the hair making the legs look thicker. Finish off with a light sprinkle of P.P. Pixie Dust here and there throughout the coat. Just a touch - we want glamour not a glitter fairy, although this is not glitter. It is a subtle shimmer and used wisely is fabulous for picking up pinpricks of sunlight or spotlights. For between show maintenance, use a good Pin Brush to aerate the coat and slather P.P. Revivacoat all throughout the coat for an easy leave in moisturiser.

Spray a mix of Seabreeze Oil - 1 teaspoon to 1 cup water all underneath and around the pee feathers - to protect. Apply a good dose of the same mix to the ends of the lengths of the coat. Leave in all week. Once a month, mix up an application of P.P. Coat Rescue - 1/4 cup to 1 cup water and work through the coat after you have shampooed. Leave in for 15 minutes or for as long as the dog will stay still and then rinse. Apply the Seabreeze Oil as for the show preparation and leave in. For brushing during the week and for show day, mix P.P. OMG Concentrate 30:1 i.e. 30 parts water to one part OMG. Just brilliant for dematting, static free brushing, keeping the lengths of the pants from tangling and giving a great finish to the coat. Your beautifully presented Collie is quite a sensation in the show ring. He is one of those wonderful dogs who has a working heart but a movie star appearance. He is all dog and can earn his keep, but, is a really pretty face at the same time. His lovely single tracking gait at speed, with good long reaching stride shows a well balanced and capable dog. He is all loyalty and all action. Your job is to ensure he looks at his peak and whilst not a traditional 'hairdo' dog, can with that superb coat, take them all on in the glamour stakes. What a magnificent dog!

Glamorous Beautiful Written by Marilyn Clarke Collies would be the most loving dogs I have owned myself. They enjoy being part of a family, they will sleep by the bed and on the bed if allowed. The Collie's gentle, tolerant nature is the best play mate a growing family could ever own. Collies are highly intelligent so teaching them the House Rules is a breeze. The most asked question from puppy buyers or just the General public is about Grooming , because the Collie when maturing grows a huge coat. I always say "a clean environment is an easy to keep Collie" keeping the feathers (Legs) and their pants (hindquarter) brushed regularly reduces the knotting. Collies drapings will pick up any burr or dirt. I tell my new puppy buyers to put Talcum Powder on the feathers and pants as it softens the Hair and reduces knotting. Brushing the ruf (chest) at least 3 times a week will also stop knotting. When a Collie blows coat (losing their under coat) it can become a bit of a nightmare if you don't own a Blow Dryer strong enough to remove the under coat falling out, if not removed, can cause matting. I have always suggested to get a good Dog Groomer to Blow dry the Hair out or any breeder of a Collie would be very happy to assist if asked. It's worth all the effort when you see a Glamorous Beautiful Collie. Photo credits: Supplied by Marilyn Clarke

Looking after our Facilities Not exactly a new item but one that seems to bear repeating. While most exhibitors leave their areas impeccably when packing up after a weekend of events, there are still a few inconsiderate exhibitors who are jeopardising the future of our events at many of the great facilities we are lucky to have available to us by refusing to clean up after themselves. The mess that some leave behind includes but is not limited to half of their dog's coat, rubbish (bottles, wrappers, broken equipment), dog droppings either not picked up or a pile of bags (really, if you can bag it, can’t you bin it?). It is extremely unfair for us to take a view that we are so entitled that volunteers have to walk the grounds after we leave, to pick up after us because we can’t be bothered. Exhibitors need to be very careful that their disrespect of others may result in disciplinary action or refusal of entries in the future. It is really not all that much to ask that we clean up after ourselves.

Facebook Facebook is a wonderful tool to communicate, keep in touch and keep informed (to the extent of the accuracy of the information). Used well it is a powerful communication medium and is the one of choice for a lot of our members with many robust and informative posts and discussions enhancing our understanding and opening our mind to different views. But… and you all knew that a 'but' was coming… used poorly, Facebook or any social media can be an absolute train wreck and potentially get us into a lot of trouble. Whilst it may seem very easy to emotionally type out a vicious statement as the keys crack under our fingers, it would be opportune if we are in such an emotional state to forget about posting anything or at least count to ten and re-read what we are saying before pressing the 'post' button. The problem with social media is, that the meaning and intent with which we are typing our message is lost as the post is stripped back to bare words devoid of meaning and context in the public sphere. A public sphere that can and will respond and make their own assumptions about the meaning and intent of the post which may be quite different from what was originally intended. The other problem is that once you post something on the internet, it is forever captured in history. I’m sure we’ve all been in situations where we look at a post and maybe think we could have worded it better or someone else has taken it completely out of context and forced us into explanation mode – a very difficult thing to do online. A few important things to consider when thinking about posting on Facebook: • • • •
What emotional state am I in at the moment – if the answer is 'not so good', it is better not to post; Would or could my post be construed as offensive to anyone; If this post was printed in the paper with my photo beside it, would I regret it; Is the information factual – could I provide evidence to back up my statement if required to?
If any of the answers to these suggests that we probably shouldn’t put the information we are intending out into the public arena, then it is better not to do it.

Dogs Queensland has a social media policy which can be accessed on the website and as part of the rules document which can provide guidance about the use of social media.
Regional Amenities – Zone 2 Dogs Queensland is working hard behind the scenes to organise events that provide funding for regional amenities within Zone 2. Over the last few years there have been successful fundraising shows and events which has seen a current balance of approximately $7,000.00 in the Zone 2 account. We are however, about to pay airfares for a of the upcoming shows in October and November so things will drop a little bit until the revenue for the shows is received later in the year. Several clubs have accessed funding from the Amenities account including Sarina Kennel Club, Rockhampton Kennel Club and Mackay Kennel Club to name a few for contributions toward improvement of their club amenities and the benefit of this support can be seen in all the clubs. If your club has a project that they are looking to fund, please feel free to contact me to discuss the options available for Dogs Queensland to support clubs in their endeavours.
Zone 2 Event Last year the Dogs Queensland Board approved the running of a Zone 2 event styled like Dog Of The Year. Members in Zone 2 would recall that when the regional finals for DOTY were cancelled some years ago, the Callide Valley Canine Club ran the Callide Classic as a competition for members in Zone 2 to celebrate the dogs who had achieved great things throughout the year. Please keep an eye on communications from Dogs Queensland to obtain details of this event to be held at the end of October this year. Please note that the Zone events are NOT a qualifier for the state final in Brisbane. If you have qualified for this event, you are eligible to participate in it. The Zone events will be a completely separate competition designed as a fun evening for members in regional areas.

Golden Retriever Club of Qld Sunday, 14th May 2017 Supplied by Karen Vowell Facing a rather gloomy day that threatened rain the committee and members of the Golden Retriever Club of Qld headed off to Durack for their second Club Funday. We had a very successful day two years ago and were hoping this time that we would still pull the crowds with their beautiful pet goldens and via product raise some much needed funds for our Club. Willing helpers had made cakes, pup cakes, donated raffle prizes including Gold Coast Pet Butler, Kong and Advance giving us 6 large barrels of food to raffle. Serious competitions were held such as egg and spoon and Fancy Dress. Grooming and nail cutting demos were held. We had Pawsitive Connections once again and Pawsome Tug Toys in attendance.
Folks and families with their dogs came in their droves and we at the Golden Club feel very strongly that this is where the future of dog ownership is headed and we need to shift our focus to the pet owning public rather than just on the competitive aspect of the dog world.

Importing a Dog Before you start, ask yourself whether your nerves can stand it and whether your wallet can bleed enough. By Patricia McLeod International All Breeds Judge
ll dog fanciers will know of and understand the compelling reasons for a quarantine service. You have only to visit countries which are not rabies free to realise how lucky we are in Australia. We have had founding fathers who have set up a barrier to the importation of this dreadful disease and we should be forever grateful. The fact that we live in an island nation has been beneficial. Before you start the rules of importation are a must read. It may prove to be difficult to import from some places. The various counties of origin have classifications. For my part I have just completed the seventh importation over a period covering forty-two years. And believe me when I say it hasn’t been easy. And all my imports have been from either U.K. or U.S.A. And they have been limited to two breeds viz. O.E.S. and Lhasa Apsos. My first imports were a male and female from USA. Agents were not required at the origin and breeders could do the paperwork and have the tests and vaccinations before consignment. Brisbane had a quarantine station then and they were required to be there for 9 (nine) months. These dogs originated from Hawaii where they had a 6 (six) month live out and a 4 (four) month live in before departure. It was difficult. There was no Gateway bridge so I had to get on a vehicular ferry to go to Lytton.
32 - July 2017
But I could go in and groom them. There were only two problems in those periods. Kennel Cough swept through the inmates but that was dealt with by the veterinarians on call. On another crisis I was not consulted before a veterinarian gave my bitch a cortisone shot for a small hot spot she had developed. So I had a total of 18 (eighteen) months regular travel to Lytton. The next one was from UK and quarantine here in Brisbane was never open to dogs from UK. So he had to be sent to Sydney. At that time the quarantine was closer to the CBD. He stayed there for 3 months. No agents were required and again the breeders could handle all the paperwork and blood tests and vaccinations. I used to get on a plane regularly to attend to his general maintenance. The quarantine could be reached from the city without massive taxi fares. Buses ran from the airport to the city. The next one was also from UK and I was not the importer at first but I took it over when the original importer could no longer carry on due to a change in plans. It was a 3 month stay in Sydney quarantine. Both of these dogs were retrieved by my husband who went down from Brisbane to Sydney to collect them. No agents were involved. Quite a few years later I wished to bring a Lasa Apso from USA. Yes, I had to find an agent and the breeder carried out all the veterinary appointments for blood tests and vaccinations.

Member Insight The Queensland Dog World
The cost of these mounts up and cover a time of about five months. I had to apply for an import permit and send it on to the agent in LA. These agents do the flight bookings and get the final veterinary signings and deliver the dog to the right place at the airport. Cost depends on size of the dog or should I say of his crate. Agents costs vary but it is a multi-thousand expense. Quarantine was down to thirty days. Quarantine fees then were less than they are to-day. I had to pay a groomer to go into the quarantine every week to groom and bath the dog. He transported the dog to the airport and consigned him to me at the end of the thirty days. The breeder had transported the dog from her home in Albuquerque to the agent in LA. By then Sydney quarantine had moved to new quarters a long way out of the city and certainly not available for my previous one day visits. After a couple of years I imported another Lhasa Apso. We followed all the same protocols as we had done for the first one. I used the same agent, the same groomer and it was Sydney quarantine again. So it was relatively painless and the only wounds were inflicted on the wallet. So we come to 2016 and there were a few surprises in store. This time it was another Lhasa Apso from the same breeder. The previous imported bitch had failed as a breeder of puppies. I was given a chance to own a young bitch with a good start in the ring. So the breeder went ahead and read the changed quarantine regulations. She was amazed at the changes. And I contacted the agent I had used previously. However they were no longer in business. A friend recommended an agent who proved to be highly efficient. Her fees were roughly the same as I had paid for the other Lhasas and I set about getting an import permit.
So she arrived in quarantine and passed all her checks and was deemed to be able to leave after ten days. A friend recommended a person with a licence to transport dogs from the quarantine to the airport. So I booked his services and discovered that the quarantine release charge was $100. Anyway the dog made it to the airport but was offloaded to a later plane. I was not happy. Finally she was released to me from Virgin Cargo at 4.50 p.m. after having left quarantine at 8 a.m. She arrived at her new home in drizzly rain on a pitch black night. Both dog and human were exhausted after all the delays. Am I going to do it again? You can guess the answer! If I did I might let the agent do the deal with the whole procedure. I had a quote from a guy called Angel and he wanted quite a large sum. It is probably worth it to pay up, sit back and relax. If I was faced with doing it again I might lapse into PTQSD. Nevertheless the end is justified because if rabies and a few other nasties were allowed into Australia our lives would be changed. I totally support the principles in place. I totally support the penalties placed on those who seek to avoid quarantine. How can it be improved? Maybe the technospeak in the applications could be simplified. An easier way through the maze. The whole process to become more inclusive of the dog owner. The staff,in the main, are quite sympathetic and helpful. Most of us can use a computer but very complicated procedures are not our forte.
I had heard tales of woe from other fanciers about the difficulty which lay before me. After one try I gave up and did nothing about it. New Year passed and we were in 2017. Time moved on to when I had to do it. Two days later I was no further ahead. So I phoned the quarantine office and a very kind person led me through the maze. I needed further guidance and was helped along by the staff. Finally I got the permit after paying a $480 application fee. Then I had to make a booking and pay the quarantine in excess of $1,500 for my dog’s incarceration. And the booking had to be confirmed but thankfully I was helped by a very kind staff member from the quarantine.

Corporal Vanessa Wallis Royal Australian Air Force Written by George Hulse PL Vanessa Wallis comes from the Ipswich area of Queensland and spent most of her formative years mixing city life and country living together. She has a love of animals, particularly dogs. When she was seven years of age, her school took her to see the RAAF Police Dog demonstration at the RAAF Base at Amberley. At the end of the demonstration Vanessa made up her mind that she wanted to become a military working dog handler in the RAAF. Vanessa signed up into the RAAF in 2002 and graduated from the RAAF Security and Fire School as a military working dog handler. Vanessa was teamed-up with a female German Shepherd AKYRA, and they remained a team for some years.

East Timor In early 2006 the threat to peace and stability in East Timor had become an international issue. Vanessa’s unit was on standby to mobilise, and when the call came to deploy to East Timor, she was on the list to go. Vanessa thad been promoted to Leading Aircraft Woman (LACW) with one stripe on her uniform. Six dog teams were airlifted to East Timor by C130 (Hercules) transport aircraft in May 2006 including Vanessa and her dog AKYRA. In Vanessa’s words: “the four of us were on the back door of the aircraft and the dogs were in containers in front of us. We were fully kitted up for action with weapons, live rounds, Kevlar body protection and field packs. The loadmaster came to us at the rear of the aircraft and told us to prepare for action and that we were about to land. His instructions included 'put on your helmets'. That was very difficult because the helmets were attached to the packs on our backs. So, we sat and looked at each other and wondered what the heck we had let ourselves in for. Immediately the aircraft touched down we were ordered to 'load', and on to our rifles went a magazine full of bullets. The aircraft had barely stopped when the cargo hatch was lowered and were told to get off quickly. After sitting in the cold of the Hercules from Darwin, the heat and the smell of East Timor hit us as a sudden surprise, given that most of us had never been outside Australia before. The Hercules kept its motors revving and the crew were obviously getting ready to load up again and then take off. Our gear and dogs were removed from the aircraft very swiftly by the air lift team. I had a problem moving because we had been sitting for a long time without the opportunity to move about, then the weight of the pack and the need to move quickly on numb legs and jump the twenty centimetres from the ramp on to the tarmac was a far bigger effort that I had imagined it would be. I was helped down from the ramp by some kind soul who could see my predicament. The dogs were still in their containers and the containers were lashed to a pallet. The pallet was removed by a forklift and we saw our dogs disappear into the darkness”. “The ‘airport’ had been taken over by local people who were probably homeless. We had to walk over sleeping bodies all over the floors of the airport building. The dogs had to be held up short and dragged over the folk on the floor. We saw the local police guarding the entrances and parts of the airport as we moved outside into an area next to the airport which had been allocated to us for the first night. We slept on the ground with dogs tied up short to us and weapons under us. When I woke up early next morning, I saw a crowd of people staring at us from outside the airport perimeter fence. I felt like an exhibit in a zoo.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
I needed to use a toilet and asked CPL Thompson where it was. He laughed, and then took me to the toilet in the terminal. It was out of order and had been well patronised. It reeked, but I managed to use it without touching it by stretching my rifle out in front of me to counter-balance my body. I’ll bet the small arms instructors, back in my basic weapons training, didn’t think of that use of a firearm!” The RAAF dog section spent a few days in that area before being allocated a building in the airport precinct. Apparently, the local people were afraid of large dogs, such as the German Shepherd. This was handy when the large carparks adjacent to the airport were being cleared of people and illicit weapons. Suspicious people and armed civilians were quickly rounded up and handed over to the security forces. There is no doubt that the dogs were a boon in this function. There was a lot of gang violence, spontaneous riots and rock throwing going on at the time. Many of these incidents were pacified the moment the dogs arrived and were instrumental in assisting the security forces to separate out the opposing factions.

Life for a female combatant
The dogs had to be administered in line with AQIS quarantine protocols which included daily and bi-weekly medications, and dipping every three days. This was to combat the possibility of pathogenic parasites being present in the dogs. Every dose, type of medication and dipping regime had to be annotated and certified in writing for monitoring by AQIS personnel. Vanessa was assigned the responsibility of packaging the medications for her compatriot handlers as well as reminding them of the timing for dips. The dog food was packaged in twenty kilo bags. However, dry dog food is a magnet for rats and mice and it was a constant battle to protect the dog food from the abundant vermin in the area.
The accommodation for Vanessa afforded her no privacy and no chance of ever being on her own. Despite this, she became confident in her safety while with her own group of ‘doggies’.
Vanessa makes Australian Military History Vanessa went on a patrol with three Airfield Defence Group airmen ('ADGs'). Their task was to patrol the area near a village close to the airport. On arrival, the patrol saw a commotion going on with the local people and an armed suspect. The suspect saw the patrol and bolted off. The ADG commander gave the order to pursue him and so the three ADGs, Vanessa and AKYRA, gave immediate chase, straight into the village. The ADGs began to close on the suspect because he had to run between civilians, who seeing the problem began screaming and running for cover. However, the ADG commander realised that the suspect might be running his patrol into an ambush.
They trusted each other without any possibility of doubt. Bathing was by communal shower arrangements and this was augmented with numerous packets of moist towelettes. In the early stages after arrival, the vast majority of meals were taken from ration packs and these became monotonous after a while. Some resourceful local purchases were made to augment the combat rations, such a loaf of bread and sometimes a box of fruit. Eventually, a dining mess was opened and they received cooked meals. After her tour of duty in East Timor ended, Vanessa and AKYRA returned to RAAF Base Amberley where Vanessa was promoted to Corporal and later worked as an instructor of RAAF dog handlers. The dogs were made ready for their return to Australia (RTA) under the strict AQIS protocols and veterinary arrangements and were held in quarantine for 30 days at Eastern Creek near Sydney before returning to their units. So the commander ordered his patrol to go to 'action' with their weapons (put a bullet in the chamber and be ready to fight). Vanessa cocked her weapon and for the first time in her life, realised that she just might have to fight her way out of a dangerous situation. They continued the chase with adrenalin pumping, finger on the safety catch and AKYRA ready to go into action. There came a point in time when the patrol almost tackled the suspect, but he turned a corner and ran straight into the arms of another group of soldiers from the international security forces and was captured. It was not his day. But the RAAF patrol breathed a collective sigh of relief as they 'made safe' (unloaded) their rifles. Vanessa is the first female combatant in the ADF to load a bullet into the beach of her rifle and pursue a suspect with the possibility of entering into a firefight.
