President’s Message for February 2017 Director Elections By the time you are reading this message, the time for you all to vote for your Dogs Queensland Directors is nearly here. Thank you once again to all those Members who have provided their email details and those who have let us know that they wish to vote in the upcoming Director Elections via a postal vote. The nominations booklet is provided for all Members in this edition of the Dog World, as well as the Dogs Queensland Website, and I would urge you all to read this very carefully and make up your own minds about who you believe will best serve the interests of Dogs Queensland. The six Directors that are elected now in 2017 will remain on the Dogs Queensland Board of Directors until March 2021. As a reminder once again, this is the process that will be followed for those opting for Internet Voting. ‘Just prior to the Ballot opening on 10th February, you will receive two emails from Australian Election Company. The first will contain your unique Dogs Queensland person number, the second will contain Voting Instructions, a link to the voting website and a random Password. When you click on the link to the Voting website, you will be asked to enter your authentication details (Person Number and the random Password). Once the correct authentication details have been entered, the list of Candidates will appear on the screen. You will also be able to view each of the brief Candidate résumés before selecting your preferred Candidates. To cast your vote, follow the on-screen voting instructions and be sure to submit your vote before leaving the voting system. Once you have submitted your vote, you will not be able to vote again. Please note that voting is entirely secret as your Person number and Password are electronically detached from your manner of voting. During the Voting period, 10th February to 15th March, if you require any voting assistance, you will be able to contact our Helpdesk on 1800 224 420 during business hours.’

Award Of Life Membership The award of Life Membership is the highest honour that Dogs Queensland can bestow upon a Member and it was with great pleasure that the Board presented the honour for 2016 to Mrs Georgina Golle. Briefly, as there will be a full write up in the March Dog World, Georgina served for 14 years as a CCC(Q) Councillor, Chaired numerous Committees, trained / trialled many dogs in the RAFT, Obedience and Tracking world and was a wonderful ambassador for the dog world. Well done indeed. Animal Management (Protecting Puppies) And Other Legislation Amendment Act 2016 (Act) Obviously the negotiations with the State Government continue as we try to secure the very best outcome for our Members. I will continue to supply regular email updates on the situation as things move very quickly at times, all updates are and will also be available on our Website and Facebook page.

For 2017, Clubs using Durack for ‘Fundays’ or similar events will only be allowed to do so twice a year. The dates for 2017 will be Sunday 14th May and Sunday 19th November.
Easter Office Closure All Members are asked to please note that the Dogs Queensland Office will be closed for the Easter Holidays from 12:00pm on Thursday 13th April 2017 and will reopen on Tuesday 18th April 2017 at 8:00am.
Dogs Queensland Life Membership Life Membership may be granted to any member of Dogs Queensland who has rendered outstanding or special services to Dogs Queensland. That person shall retain membership of Dogs Queensland for their life unless otherwise determined by virtue of any exercise of disciplinary proceedings under the CCC(Q) Ltd Rules. Any Affiliated Kennel Club or Dogs Queensland Member may nominate any member for Life Membership. That person will have a minimum of fifteen (15) years continuous full membership of the Dogs Queensland and must have been a member of a Club or Clubs during that time. Such nominations are to include a citation, which provides the justification for the nomination. Citations for those Life Memberships awarded will be published in the Dog World magazine and, where possible, presentations will be made at an appropriate function or event. The CCC(Q) Ltd Board of Directors will consider all nominations on their merit and with strict confidentiality. The Board sees the grant of Life Membership as honouring a member who has been truly outstanding in his or her support of Canine Affairs, particularly beyond that of a single Club. All nominations for 2017 Dogs Queensland Life Memberships should be received in the Dogs Queensland Office no later than Wednesday 1st March 2017.

Insurance 2017 The Insurance Policy documentation pertaining to Clubs for 2017 is now available on the Dogs Queensland website. Just to confirm that we have been able to continue with the Business Travel Insurance Policy taken out on behalf of all Queensland Affiliated Clubs which is designed to cover a situation where an interstate Judge has had to pull out of an appointment, a replacement is needed and the original fare is non-refundable/ non-transferable. These policies can also be provided as a hard copy if necessary.
2018 Show Dates The draft 2018 Show Dates are now available on the Dogs Queensland Website. In a change to normal procedures, the cut-off date for the receipt of requests for additional Show Dates and changes to Show Dates for 2018 is 31st March 2017.

Dogs Queensland Specialist Member List As per the Constitution, the appointment of Members to the Dogs Queensland Specialist Member List, that will in turn form part of the Appeals Panel and also Breaches Panel, is approved on a yearly basis. Under the terms of the Constitution, all Members will need to be nominated by an Affiliated Club and then approved by the Board of Directors on a yearly basis. It is hoped that this process can be completed shortly and it is requested that Clubs provide any nominations they have to the Dogs Queensland Office no later than 22nd February 2017 by email or mail. All current Members of the panel will be contacted shortly to ascertain whether they wish to continue and to contact their nominating Club. Reproduced below are the sections of the CCC(Q) Ltd Constitution and Rules that deal with the formation of the Panel under this Constitution, and it is noted that this Panel will also form an Appeal Panel under the terms of Clause 19. 19 Appeal to the Appeal Panel regarding a decision to reject, suspend, disqualify or terminate membership 19.1 Each year, the Board of Directors shall appoint: (1) a Legal Chairperson List which shall comprise persons who are lawyers of more than ten (10) years post admission experience, including retired eminent lawyers, who may or may not have a current or former association with the CCCQ Ltd; and (2) a Dogs Queensland Specialist Member List which comprises persons with specialist knowledge of one or more of the CCCQ Ltd discipline areas and / or canine matters more generally but will not include current members of the Board provided that the members on the Dogs Queensland Specialist Member List shall have the following qualifications: (a) they shall be members of the CCC(Q) / CCCQ Ltd of no fewer than fifteen (15) years active membership and shall be either; (b) experienced judges; or (c) active Club Committee member with undoubted experience; or (d) active exhibitors with undoubted experience and standing as such.

(3) The Board of Directors may waive the requirement of fifteen (15) years membership in the case of specialists in certain fields, i.e. Veterinary Surgeons, Solicitors, etc. Each year, the Executive of each of the Clubs affiliated with the CCCQ Ltd shall be requested to nominate members of the CCCQ Ltd to be appointed to this list. The final composition of this list will be determined by the Board. 19.2 A person whose application for membership has been rejected or whose membership has been suspended, disqualified or terminated (Appellant) may give the Secretary written notice of the person’s intention to appeal the decision. 19.3 A notice of intention to appeal must be given to the Secretary: (1) in the prescribed form; and (2) within twenty eight (28) days of being notified of the decision to reject, suspend, disqualify or terminate the person’s membership. 19.4 Upon receiving a notice of intention to appeal, the Secretary must appoint an Appeal Panel. 19.5 The Appeal Panel will comprise one (1) person from the Legal Chairperson List and two (2) persons from the Dogs Queensland Specialist Member List. The three (3) persons comprising this Panel will have a decision-making role. In each appeal instance, the Secretary must nominate the next person on the Legal Chairperson list and the next two (2) persons from the Dogs Queensland Specialist Member List. If a potential conflict of interest is identified, or the person is excused for another reason, the next person on the relevant list is to be nominated by the Secretary. 19.6 Within seven (7) days of nominating the Appeal Panel, the Secretary must notify the Appellant of the persons comprising the Appeal Panel. Within seven (7) days of receiving notice from the Secretary, the Appellant may have the initial and once only right to reject any or all members of the Appeal Panel, in which event the Secretary must appoint the next person or persons on the relevant list and within seven (7) days notify the Appellant of the revised Appeal Panel. 19.7 Before the appeal is determined, the Appellant must be given a full and fair opportunity to make submissions to the Appeal Panel. The Appeal Panel will be guided by the principles of procedural fairness and natural justice in determining the procedures that are to apply.

19.8 The decision of the Appeal Panel shall be final.

19.9 The Secretary shall advise the Appellant in writing of the decision of the Appeal Panel as soon as practicable.
20.9 A member who is suspended by the Breaches Panel: (1) may not judge, register a litter or transfer or use their dog or bitch at stud for the period of the suspension; (2) is otherwise ineligible to take part in exhibitions held under the Rules of the CCCQ Ltd for the term of such suspension; and (3) they shall be re-instated as a Member at the end of the period of suspension determined by the Breaches Panel.
20 Disciplining of members 20.1 A member shall strictly observe and act in accordance with the Constitution, Rules and Code of Ethics of the CCCQ Ltd; and 20.2 Without limiting clause 20.1, a member must not engage in any conduct that could reasonably be considered to be: (1) dishonest, malicious, vexatious or scandalous or contrary to law; (2) discreditable to the member concerned or any other member; (3) prejudicial or injurious or tending to prejudice or injure any person interested in canine affairs; (4) prejudicial or injurious or tending to prejudice or injure the interests, image or standing of the CCCQ Ltd; or (5) contrary to the spirit and intent of the Constitution, Rules and Code of Ethics or any other code, resolution policy or direction of the CCCQ Ltd or any Committee. 20.3 The Legal Chairperson List and the Dogs Queensland Specialist Member List established under clause 19 will similarly be utilised as the Breaches Panel to hear matters arising from the exercise of powers by the CCCQ Ltd under Part Five (5) of the Rules 2005 and previously heard by the Breaches and Inquiries Sub-Committee. 20.4 The powers of the Breaches Panel include the right to suspend or disqualify a member for a nominated period of time. 20.5 The Breaches Panel will comprise one (1) person from the Legal Chairperson List and two (2) persons from the Dogs Queensland Specialist Member List. Similarly, these three (3) persons will have an adjudicative role. 20.6 Before the matter is determined, the Breaches Panel will provide the members with the opportunity to make submissions to the Breaches Panel. The Breaches Panel will be guided by the principles of procedural fairness and natural justice in determining the procedures that are to apply to the hearing. 20.7 In the event that the Breaches Panel determines that the alleged breach has been proven, any previous history of breaches by the member will be considered in determining the penalty. 20.8 The Secretary shall advise the member in writing of the

20.10 A member who is disqualified by the Breaches Panel: (1) may not judge, register a litter or transfer or use their dog or bitch at stud for the period of the disqualification; (2) is otherwise ineligible to take part in exhibitions held under the Rules of the CCCQ Ltd for the term of such disqualification; and (3) will be required to reapply for membership at the end of the period of disqualification or ineligibility determined by the Breaches Panel.

The Rules as they are now can be found on the ANKC Website. As these submissions will form part of the agenda of the next meeting of the National Committee we ask that you ensure they comply with Regulations Part 1, Clause 2.1 which states: "2. 1 No items are to be accepted by the ANKC Ltd Administrator for inclusion on any ANKC Ltd Board, Committee, or Subcommittee Agenda unless a detailed explanation concerning the reason/rationale for submitting the item is provided in agenda format electronically in MS Word or similar by the Member Body proposing the Agenda item. ANKC News Please note that the relevant document on the Dogs Queensland / ANKC Website has been amended where applicable; REGULATIONS PART 11 - EARTHDOG TESTS FOR SMALL TERRIERS AND DACHSHUNDS : CORRECTION The the following additional errors have been rectified in Regulations Part 11 which become effective 1st January 2017. 4.9. Junior Earthdog Test – Qualifying Performance (Amended 10/16, 6.10.1)

4.9.1 Each dog shall be brought to the test area entrance by the handler who shall remove all leads, collars, harnesses, etc before entering the test area. The handler shall carry the dog into the test area and stand at the designated starting point, a point directly in front of the den entrance at a distance of approximately 3 metres (10 feet). Upon instructions from the Judge, the handler shall release the dog. The handler may provide unlimited verbal encouragement. The handler may, at the time of release, give the dog one short command with no penalty. The dog should be released no higher than waist level and may be placed on the ground prior to release. Throwing the dog in the direction of the den entrance shall not be permitted and shall cause the dog to fail. 4.9.2 After releasing the dog, the handler shall quietly stand at the release point with no further command or signal and shall not move until instructed by the Judge. Further actions on the part of the handler during the time the dog is being tested could result in failure. 4.9.23 The timing of the dog shall start when the dog is released by the handler. The dog has 90 seconds to reach the quarry, provided that it is continuously searching during that time. It may enter and leave the den without penalty, but must reach the quarry within the 90 second time limit. Dogs reaching the quarry within the 90 second time limit shall pass this portion of the test. The handler may provide unlimited verbal encouragement. The handler must not move past the den entrance, may not touch the dog or any equipment, or reprimand the dog. 4.9.34 Once the dog has reached the quarry it must remain with the quarry until the test is completed. Should the dog leave the quarry area during the test period it shall fail. The Judge shall allow the dog 30 seconds from the time it reached the quarry to begin working. If the dog fails to begin working within 30 seconds the dog shall fail this portion of the test. 4.9.45 The work must begin and for the most part continue at a point within approximately 30 centimetres (1 foot) from the quarry. Once the dog begins working the quarry it must work continuously for 45 seconds for non-live quarry - 60 seconds when live quarry is permitted to be used. Work shall be defined as barking, growling, digging or any form of activity which, in the Judge’s opinion, indicated the dog’s interest in the quarry. A change from one form of work to another shall not be considered as a break.

Lunging and clearing dirt shall be considered work, as long as the dog stays with the quarry. Intense staring and / or sniffing the quarry should not be considered working. If in the opinion of the judge the dog is not reacting to the presence of the non-live quarry, the judge may attempt to interest the dog with no penalty to the dog. This may include manipulating the non-live quarry or the use of noise-makers or voice encouragement. 4.9.56 Dogs, which work the quarry continuously for 45 seconds for non-live quarry - 60 seconds when live quarry is permitted to be used, shall pass this portion of the test. Upon completion of the test, the Judge should allow the handler to retrieve the dog from the earth. The dog should be removed by way of the top opening at the quarry end of the earth. The dog shall be carried from the test area as soon as possible and not be allowed to investigate the test area. 4.9.67 The Judge shall mark the judging form with the time indicating whether the dog passed or failed and may make written comments as provided on the form. The completed judging forms may be held by either the Judge’s Steward or the Test Steward and collected only by the Test Secretary. 4.9.78 At the completion of the test, the Judge shall announce the names of those dogs which have qualified. The testgiving Club may award prizes or trophies to the dogs that have qualified. REGULATIONS PART 5, CLAUSE 7.4.2 (E) ANKC Ltd has been made aware that the intention of the recent addition of Clause (e) to Regulation 5 - 7.4.2 was not clearly spelt out. The clause has been amended to address the situation and the clause will now read:

Comes from BIG or RUBIG in any Championship or Open Show Dogs Queensland Event. ALL qualifiers will receive an invitation to the finals day.
The point score qualifying period will commence from 1 January 2017 and run to 16th October 2017.
2017 sees the return of a finale event for winners in Open Shows, previously known as the Open Show Spectacular. It is aimed at acknowledging Dogs Queensland members and winning canines who regularly enter Open Shows for the benefit of Trainee Judges and their education.
FORMAT
This year, the events will be completely separate to the DOTY and POTY events, as a reflection of Dogs Queensland members' feedback from previous years.

In total, there will be three events run – Best of Winners, Puppy Best of Winners and Neuter Best of Winners. TO QUALIFY

In each of the below categories (Best of Winners and Puppy Best of Winners), 24 representatives from each Group will be invited based on a points tally. The following criteria for qualification are as follows:

Best of Winners • •
Points are accumulated by winning Best in Group (5 points) and Runner Up to Best in Group (3 points) at any Open Show in Queensland. In the case of equal points, the position will be filled by the dogs that scored points over the most number of Open Shows.
Puppy Best of Winners •

Points are earned by winning best Baby Puppy in Group, Minor Puppy in Group or Puppy in Group (1 point) at any Open Show in Queensland (only puppies over 6 months old can compete at the event). In the case of tied points, the puppies with the tied points will be judged prior to the rounds commencing by a separate Open Show Judge to fill the 24 spots.
24 dogs from each Group will be drawn against each other (similar to DOTY) There will be 3 Judges selected from the Queensland Open Show Judges panel In each Group there will be 3 rounds, leaving 3 dogs remaining To minimise the risk of losing a super dog in an early round, the three Group Judges will select one eliminated dog each that they believe was their best eliminated dog to also proceed to the final round. Ultimately, 6 dogs from each Group will proceed to the Final Rounds The final round will be judged by another 3 Judges who are nearing the completion of their All Breeds Judges Licence. Great Danes are a majestic, elegant and powerful giant breed, which should give the impression of being 'dash and daring; ready to go anywhere and do anything'. Seeing a Great Dane run at full speed or rumbling at play is truly something awesome to behold. They are natural athletes, and love participating in sports and any other activity that their humans engage in, and this includes walks as much as it does lazing around on a couch all day. Great Danes love to sleep, and their preference is for this to be carried out on a couch. For long periods of time. This makes Great Danes surprisingly suitable for small houses and apartments despite their size, provided that they have the opportunity to exercise daily.
Great Danes have 6 approved colours for showing. These are Fawn, Brindle, Black, Mantle, Harlequin and Blue. The Mantle pattern was previously referred to as 'Boston'. Harlequin is unique to Great Danes, and is also a pattern rather than a colour, as they are generally genetically black dogs, which carry a single copy of the merle and harlequin genes.

Great Danes are often described as being goofy and clown-like, and they most certainly have a good sense of humour. They do not seem to know their size, and will try to fit into impossible spaces, and they entirely lack any consideration for personal space. The best place to be is as close to you as possible, preferably on top of you, or on your lap. Being a highly affectionate breed, they love cuddles and hugs from their loved ones, but can be aloof with strangers.

A Danes Tale Barry Vickers, Patron of the Great Dane Society QLD Inc. In learned canine literature Great Danes are commonly called the Apollo of all breeds which is a title richly deserved. A fact little less known is that Germany chose the Great Dane as the National dog of the fatherland and it was known as 'Deutsche Dogge'. However, upon meeting a Dane the most imposing feature is simply their size which to the uninitiated is daunting although owners become seasoned to the various comments such as “is it in the next race at Flemington?” (The Australian National Kennel Council Breed Standards Weight Minimum Over 18 months Adult Dogs 54kg and Adult Bitches 46 kg Height Over 18 Months Adult Dogs 76cm and Adult Bitches 71 cm with The Encyclopedia of the Dog – Dr. Bruce Fogle showing Weight Range 46-54 kg Height Range 71-76 cm).
the giants of our dog world although have a friendly nature and typically are well disposed towards other animals including dogs (and other animals) not in their immediate circle. One of our Danes bitches fell in love with our cat although the cat showed absolutely no return affection. Our cat was on the small side and would circle the neighbourhood seeking to create havoc by teasing other felines. The chase would always end with our cat sitting between the paws of her “friend” the Dane daring those chasing to come closer – rather a clever cat! One would never think of a Dane as a lap dog but they are frequently described as the world’s biggest lapdog as they tend to reverse onto you and put their buts onto your knees which creates that sinking feeling. Also Great Danes exhibit a preponderance to lean against any person who is in the 'lean Zone' irrespective of any relationship with the leaning post.
I well remember a truly giant Great Dane owned by one of our senior breeders. This breeder asked if I would mind holding on to this magnificent Dane whilst she was in the show ring.

Colours are imposing and include fawns, brindles, blues, blacks, mantles, bostons and of course harlequins and this is combined with a short dense coat. Interestingly many not involved in our dog world mistake size and colour. Over the years my wife and I have owned harlequins and frequently we have been asked “Is that a Dalmatian?” and my wife sweetly replies yes it is but she is quite worried as she has had it on a steroid diet and it has got a little large – no comment is made on spots as opposed to patches. The mind boggles! These magnificent canines have a large and imposing appearance, are one of

After a short 'get to know' session I found myself buckling under the Danes not inconsiderable weight as he took the opportunity to lean all over me thus sinking me into the turf. Size must be considered in all matters such as can you transport your Dane in your motor vehicle, is there somewhere safe for it to sleep at night, vets fees and the medicines associated therewith are usually more costly and on and on it goes.

Our first Dane was a beautiful bitch and she had a mild complaint and being inexperienced with Danes we consulted a vet. The vet said that she would keep our girl overnight to ensure she was correctly medicated and she was not allowed to 'run around'. Inexperienced we might have been but stupid we were not and we nicely asked how our bitch would be restrained to which the vet responded she would tie her with rope to a large and heavy table and this would be sufficient (no cages or boxes being large enough).

After much arguing and explanations that Danes did not do well when separated from their owners we agreed she could remain overnight but that the vet must take full responsibility for her actions.

Continued from page 21 Early next morning we had a very angry vet demanding we collect our Dane immediately. Our Dane had chewed through the rope restraints, up ended the table and had knocked down all medicines to the floor with many broken glass bottles ending in a messy and dangerous floor. Amazingly our Dane was unhurt and rearing to go and the vet learnt a valuable lesson in giant dog management. For those thinking a Great Dane would naturally sleep outside think again. Danes follow the simple rule that wherever you are they will be as well. They are definitely 'inside dogs' who want to be part of your family and have a close affinity with you and all in the family. I well remember our home which was partially constructed in brick with external timber feature walls. Being young and foolish we decided to leave our Dane outside whilst we were out shopping.
the circumstances warrant action and I have found this to be the case with all our Danes. Why choose a Great Dane when there are many other great canines available? Their size is a significant draw back and needs to be carefully considered before speaking with recommended and registered breeder/kennels. Those within our wonderful dog world know that all dogs are loyal companions, with sterling attributes and there is a breed suitable for everyone. Biased though I might be I have found Danes to be a superb canine with a beautiful nature, elegant in gait, distinctive, gentle and make a marvellous companion with a natural affinity to those with which they live. You would do well to consider owning one of these Apollo of the breeds.
The Giant Food Bill Alexandra Proudfoot, Treasurer of the Great Dane Society QLD Inc. Fur Kids Pet Food Oh boy, I’d hate to see your feed bill! These are words that every Great Dane owner hears almost weekly. In spite of their giant stature, once they reach maturity, they really do not have giant appetites and are generally pretty easy keepers - although those puppy dog eyes will tell you they really do need a bite of your morning toast. Great Dane puppies however, can seem to be a walking stomach that is never sated.
Our Dane thought he would also enjoy shopping and then decided to show that he was not pleased with being left at home alone. He captured our attention by demolishing one of our timber feature walls (top to bottom) in about an hour and a half. Danes have a lovely way with children and make an ideal family dog. A new home was being built next door and our two children were both very young. Our Dane bitch had a lovely time going on guard duty when the builders arrived in the morning and only standing down upon their departure. If a builder approached our side fence our Dane would immediately advance and tell him he was not welcome as her 'children' were under her protection. On no occasion was any builder foolish enough to try to approach or stupidly touch our daughter and son. They are a superb guard but they are not aggressive and will only act when

Due to their rapid growth, Great Danes, like other giant breeds, require specific ratios in their food to promote slow, even growth and reduce growth issues associated with over or under nutrition. The Great Dane youngster will typically hit 60kg and stand 8090cm at the withers by 12 months of age, that is on average more than 1kg gain per week! Due to this rapid growth, they should be grown lean, to avoid undue stress on their growing bones and joints. They should be fit and active, albeit a little clumsy, but should avoid strenuous exercise until their growth plates have closed. It is generally recommended to choose a large/giant breed specific puppy kibble that garners its protein content from high quality meat sources. Great Dane puppies are generally fed a kibble with a protein percentage around 26%, however, studies have shown that protein content up to 31% does not negatively affect growth. The fat percentage should be at or below 16%. The main one to watch though, is the Calcium and Phosphorus ratios (Ca:P). Current studies fluctuate a bit with the recommended ratios, between 1.1:1 and 1.5:1. The Great Dane community generally accepts that the Ca:P ratio should be between 1.1:1 and 1.3:1 to ensure sound skeletal development.

A Very Brief History Of Great Danes Jill Evans*, Great Dane historian, reprinted with permission * Jill Evans is the author of 'The Time Traveller – the development of the Great Dane' and a founding member of the Great Dane Association of Ireland. The European wild boar of long ago was a huge bristly bad-tempered beast with sharp tusks, weighing some 400 lbs or more.
There are many portraits of Danish and other royalty with their Great Dane-like dogs. In the 16th Century the Royal Courts of Denmark introduced the new fashion of the Parforce Hunt – an unnatural hunt where the dogs were expected to hunt the deer, boar or wolf, knock it down and hold it firm until the human huntsman arrived and then made the kill. The protocols of the Danish court showed that the large hound was not well equipped for the role in the Parforce Hunt. It was too light in build to hold down a deer or wolf without killing it.
To solve this problem King Frederik II (regent 1559-1588) sent a ship to London in 1585 to bring back 'Englandshvalpe' (the 16th century Danish huntsmen's term for 'puppies from England') given to him by Queen Elizabeth I, which were the far heavier English mastiff and when blended with the hound became the foundation of the present day Great Dane. Count Philipp the Generous of Hessen was reported to keep some of his English imports 'in the room with him at all times'. The largest and best of these dogs wore gilded collars lined with velvet and were known as Kammerhunde (house pets), and the second best had collars of silver and were called Liebhunden (personal protection dogs).
These animals regularly smashed through dense forests, endangering people and decimating the local fauna. In the Middle Ages aristocrats considered it great sport to bag thousands of wild boar in huge hunts such as one held in the Reinhard forest area north of Frankfurt in 1563, when nearly 2600 boar of all ages were captured. Accompanying the titled hunters on horseback were troops of the local villagers acting as beaters, and packs of several hundred giant dogs of great agility, courage, strength and perseverance. These dogs were kept in kennels and were frequently exchanged between princely estates in England, Germany, Denmark and other places, and it’s generally accepted that those mediaeval boarhounds are probably the ancestors of today’s Great Dane. They often wore protective padded coats for the hunt which were reinforced with whalebone, and their ears were cropped short so that they wouldn’t be torn off by the angry boar or ripped in the forest’s underbrush. After their dangerous excursions some of the survivors were even cherished as housedogs.

The forebears of these fabled 'Hatzrüden' are lost in antiquity but dogs of similar appearance are found in artworks, coins and the like from almost all over the world, going back to time immemorial. Some of the earliest are Egyptian tomb carvings about five thousand years old, of dogs remarkably like the Great Dane.

Nobody really knows what breeds were mixed to produce these dogs, but there is conjecture that the extinct Irish Greyhound, rough-coated 'Mastins', houndlike 'Alaunts', the bulky Tibetan Mastiff and ancient Assyrian 'battle-dogs' made contributions, along with hairier heavy breeds like the Molossian Hound of antiquity. The harlequin pattern is likely a donation from the longgone Egyptian Greyhound.

Dane predecessors also hunted wolves, wild cattle and stag, and went to war in Roman times as well as later, as shown in the tapestry of Marlborough’s siege of Blenheim in 1704, which shows Lord Cadogan’s Great Dane. The Romans also staged spectacles where huge dogs were pitted against each other or animals such as bears in fights.

Continued from page 25 In Sweden and Denmark tall dogs, 'usually a light slaty-blue' were used in pairs to assist eIk-finders. Dane-like dogs have also been used through the ages for gentler pursuits, such as to pull carts and of course to act as watchdogs. The story goes that they will let an intruder in but not out, unless given an okay by the owner. As time passed the wild boar became scarce so boarhound packs were not needed any more, and the last rather coarse example in Germany was sold in 1876. But even earlier, in 1800, Sydenham Edwards had written that the more refined members of this breed were also used as carriage dogs to precede the entourage of the noble and wealthy. Only the most exalted rated the “Danish Dog,” while the coach dog for the less important was the Dalmatian - “the humble attendant of the servants and horses.” He adds “I certainly think no equipage can have arrived at its acme of grandeur until a couple of harlequin Danes precede the pomp.” The development of the modern purebred Great Dane began in about the middle of the 19th century, which also saw the advent of competitive dog shows in England and on the Continent. These grew enormously and in 1887 the Stuttgart show had an entry of 300 Danes. A preliminary standard for the breed had been drawn up in Germany in 1800, and in that country its popularity may have been influenced by the fact that the Chancellor, Prince Otto von Bismarck (born in 1815) was a great fancier and had owned several Danes from his early youth onward, the most famous of which was a blue dog called Tyras. Later in the century the Dane was adopted as Germany’s 'National Dog' and its various names were discarded in favour

of Deutsche Dogge (German Mastiff ) in that country. Strangely, in France the name Dogue Allemand is used now, a direct translation of the German, and the French name Grand Danois (Great Dane) is only used in Scandinavia and Quebec. Italy calls the breed the Alano – a legacy of the Alaunt? In 1895 the Prince of Wales (who was to become King Edward VII) asked that ear-cropping be discontinued. Although no such law was passed, the Kennel Club agreed that no cropped dog could be shown or registered. However, some diehards rallied and countered by breeding for neat, small, expressive ears which would not detract from the “look of dash and daring” called for in the British Standard.

Great Danes are thought of as a 'spit and polish' breed when it comes to grooming for the show ring. With a short smooth and sleek coat it can be deceiving that there is no work at all involved in maintaining their coat. They do however have a high hair follicle release turnover rate, which means they shed dead hairs a lot, especially when 'blowing coat', this term refers to when they are going through either a hormonal change from puppyhood to adolescents and change their coat to its adult form, and also once adult around the change of seasons. Some Danes blow their coats more profusely than others, it's generally in relation to their bloodline and its origin geographically.
The goal for the show ring is to have a beautiful rich sleek coat dust and dander free, laying flat against the body and smelling fresh. Depending on whether the coat is in normal status or 'blowing' dictates the level of grooming in the week leading up to a show or just the day before and of the show. Everyone has specific products they prefer to use to create the desired result, particularly I prefer a few different ones for different requirements depending on whats going on with the coat, and the colour of the coat. I always do at least two washes first to remove dirt staining and debris and the second to wash the skin and coat itself bring it up fresh and squeaky clean. Finally, the last thing to mention are whiskers. Some people prefer not to remove them, others appreciate the more refined elegance it can achieve on the profile of the Great Dane. These can be scissored or there are also other tools such as 'whisker wackers' which are comb razors that can more safely and quickly remove the whiskers around the cheeks, above the eyes and around the nose, lips, chin and muzzle in general. A nice way to finish here on dark faced coloured danes is to finish with a small amount of Virgin coconut oil rubbed between the hands and then over the muzzle and eyes lightly, being careful not to get it into the eye itself. This gives a lovely softness feel to the touch of the Judge and deepens the colour of these points, slightly accentuating the look of the Dane nicely. Finally before entering the ring a good wipe over with a micro fibre dust cloth to remove stray hairs and dust, plus a light spray of Plush Puppy Shine and comb all over to give the coat a little extra sheen to hopefully stand out from the crowd. A beautifully groomed coat on a Great Dane screams health and exuberance.

The Greatest Therapists Beverly Turner, Delta Society The gentle, sensitive nature of the Great Dane can make for the ideal Therapy Dog, providing patients with comfort, stimulation and an endless source of amusement during their hospital stay, many of whom are away from their own pets for extended periods of time. Staff, patients and visitors at care facilities are often surprised to see these majestic, gentle giants striding past, looking to steal pats from anyone who will oblige. The Delta Society, which runs a Dog Therapy Program, provides dog therapy support to over 850 facilities nationally, ranging from aged care through to acute care hospitals for children and adults as well mental health, prisons and dementia specific facilities. Often these environments can be unpredictable and noisy and therefore, a trusting, positive relationship between dog and his owner is important so that the dog feels reassured. Organisations such as Delta Therapy, have

a dog-centric focus, ensuring that the dog is happy and engaged during his visits, rather than simply illustrating obedience. Anyone who is familiar with the emotionally intuitive Great Dane disposition, will know that this is a dog that will only do what they feel comfortable with and will only interact with whom they feel comfortable with. As such during their Therapy Work, Great Danes tend to seek out those people with whom they feel an affinity and with those patients who require them the most. As a volunteer, this may indeed surprise you. However, it is important to let your dog choose where they are going to focus their energies. When the Great Dane Therapy dog is finished, you will be under no illusion. They will offer the patients their rear end and stare at the Exit! As a Therapy Dog, the size of the Great Dane can be an advantage to those people who are bed bound, offering a wet nose to places that most other dogs can’t reach! Not only does the Great Dane provide a substantial source of cuddles, the conversation that ensues between the patients and the volunteers regarding size, temperament, food, exercise and of course, ‘does he sleep on your bed’, is part of the Therapy work too!
So how do you become part of a Therapy Team? Delta Therapy teams (dog and volunteer) are supported to ensure that they are suitable for Therapy work. Volunteers undergo a police check and complete a training seminar, and dogs undergo strict temperament testing to determine their suitability for visiting care facilities. Once accredited as a Delta Therapy Team, the team is assigned to a facility within their local area. If you are interested in becoming part of a Therapy Team here are some of the things to consider: • • • • • • •
Is your dog healthy and without any medical conditions or physical issues? Is your dog older than 18 months and younger than 10 years old? Do you use positive reinforcement methods? ways to Protect Your Dogs from The Heat This Summer Supplied by Alex Khan
ummer means bright and sunny mornings and lots of fun outdoors, but do you know that the high temperatures can be dangerous for your canines and pets? Veterinary doctors say that they receive a large number of emergency cases during the summers. Just like the way you take precautionary measures for yourself and for your family during the hot summer season, it is important that you do the same for your pets as well to protect them from having heat stroke and other health problems.

The following basic measures can be taken to make sure your doggie doesn’t get affected by the heat and enjoys the summer season with you.
1 Provide Water to Keep Them Cool To keep the furry member of your family safe and healthy during high temperatures, make sure they have plenty of drinking water available all the time. Also, dogs love to lie down in water to cool off. So, allow them to do that in a bath tub or a pool. Since dogs do not have sweat glands on their skin, they lower their body temperature by drinking plenty of water and when allowed to lie down and play in water, they get some relief from the heat.

Leaving Your Pet Dog in the Car Could be Dangerous
Remember that the temperature inside a parked car is much higher than it is outside. So, it is better to either leave your dog at home or take the fur ball with you whenever you park your car. A dog’s body temperature can rise and they can even get heat stroke if left in the car, even for an hour.
3 Protect Your Dog’s Paws Can you walk barefoot for a mile on a hot summer day? Surely not. So, how can you expect your dog to do that? Long summer walks can burn your dog’s paws, especially if it’s a young pup. In order to protect its paws, avoid going out during afternoons. Take your puppy for a walk either in the mornings or late in the evening. If, for some reason, you have to take your pet out during the day, make them walk on grass or other cool surfaces and avoid cement or asphalt surfaces. Additional protection can be provided by using paw wax and regularly moisturising your pup’s feet. 4.4
Your Doggie Needs Sunblock too
Although dogs have fur to protect their skin, they can still get skin cancer. Therefore, it is important to provide them additional protection from the sun by applying sunblock on them. No, do not apply your sunblock all over your puppy’s body. There are sunblocks especially made for pets which need to be applied on areas where there are less or no hairs, such as their belly. 5.5
Keep an Eye on Your Dog
During the summers, it is important to keep an eye on your dog and look for any signs of dehydration or heat stroke so that emergency care can be provided. Lookout for the following warning signs which are indicative of their high body temperature: • • • • • •
Too much consumption of water Heavy panting Disorientation or confusion Vomiting Red eyes Lethargy

NEOSPORA CANINUM Something all breeders should be aware of... Written by Jody Hafey ome breeders may have it and not be aware and some just don't want to know... There are more questions than answers, but this is what I have found out so far. The Protozoan parasite Neospora Caninum can cause a serious disease in dogs (Bjerk DS et al. 1984, Dubey et al. 1988a, Barber and Trees 1996, Dubey and Lindsay 1996, Dubey et al. 1998, Lindsay and Dubey 2000, Dubey 2003a) Neospora attacks muscles (leaving scar tissue) and the nervous system (that can result in loss of function to the limbs causing paralysis or loss of function to any or all of the brain functions). It is a single organism parasite. In layman terms, from my understanding, the parasite causes an infection which in turn causes signs which can appear to be neurological or paralysis in the limbs, seizuring, slow growth rate (failure to thrive), vomiting, bone deformities, to name a few. Neospora can be fatal or can affect the pup to the degree that euthanasia is the only option. For any pup that has been affected the level of damage done at the start of treatment is mostly permanent. Although, some degree of repair/recovery has been successful with physiotherapy, swimming, massage and other treatments to the limbs thus allowing the affected puppy to live a normal happy life. Plus, the recommended dose of appropriate medications. This is important because the quicker the dog or puppy gets the medication the more likely the success of the treatment and recovery.

Neospora can be transmitted to pups transplacentally from the dam if she has a chronic infestation - Neospora usually does not affect adults as their immune system kills it or sends the Neospora into hiding without the adult showing any symptoms.

It is a single organism parasite. Neospora in dogs is more common than you think. This is not breed specific. Ante-mortem diagnosis of Neosporosis in animals is difficult. Clinical history, age of dogs, and serological examinations are helpful for the diagnosis of Neosporosis in dogs. Most cases of canine Neosporosis have been in congenitally infected dogs involving littermates (Dubey and Lindsay, 1996; Lindsay and Dubey, 2000). In most instances, dogs are born without symptoms and begin to develop clinical signs 3 or more weeks after birth, and not all pups are affected to the same degree. (J.P. Dubey, M.C.B. Vianna , O.C.H. Kw ok , D.E. Hill , K.B. Miska , W. Tuo , G.V. Velmurugan , M. Conors, M.C. Jenkins, 2007b)... BUT, a simple blood test will give you a pretty good indication.

This is a Titre test, it should cost less than $200 and for the sake of the puppies, this will become part of my regular health testing regime prior to breeding ANY bitch from now on. Original Neospora infestations occur from eating raw beef freezing can, but is not guaranteed to, kill Neosporosis Canine. In a nutshell, do not feed red meat or bones unless you freeze it first - this includes beef, lamb, goat. BUT, please rest assured, we cannot catch this. We are resistant to the Neospora parasite and our human grade meat does get tested for many things and passes through many processes. Neospora appears to 're-activate' on pregnancy so can be passed via the placenta. The theory behind this is, the bitch’s immune system alters enabling her to become pregnant and to maintain the pregnancy. At this point, the Neospora become active (or come out of hiding) and are able to penetrate certain areas of the body including the placenta and infect puppies. The same can be said for an adult dog with a compromised immune system, this MAY allow the inactive Neospora to become active. As a general rule of thumb, if the girls of the litter survive, they should not be bred as they could be harboring the Neospora, similarly the bitch who produced the Neospora litter, should not be bred again. Boys CAN NOT transmit Neospora, as long as they survived the infestation, they will be fine and can be bred on with, without any risk of reproducing Neosporosis.
if the pup/s will be born with a Neospora infestation that activates at birth or anything up to four months later. If a bitch puppy from the original affected litter is bred she is in the same boat – she may have a litter that is completely normal, smaller or affected. As the lady said, 'a crap shoot'. Again, please talk to your vet before making decisions on breeding from affected or positive dogs/bitches. If you have a case of Neosporosis, it is extremely unlikely that it would spread through the other dogs on your property. It requires a herbivore (cow, sheep, goat, horse) as an intermediate host to develop into an infective parasite and experimentally, attempts to infect dogs by feeding them oocysts (that are shed in dogs faeces) have NOT been successful. Dogs become infected by transplacental transmission from mother to pups while she is pregnant (most commonly) and also via ingesting/eating tissues (uncooked meat, offal, placenta, aborted calves, etc) from infected herbivores as above.
There is evidence of affected puppies going on to become Champion Show dogs and bred from without incident. However, please talk to your vet before breeding from an affected bitch or dog. Neospora causes miscarriages in cattle and dogs. It is often misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all especially with dogs. It is suspected that many bitches who 'reabsorb', or whelp dead pups, or have pups that fail to thrive may actually have Neospora (remember no symptoms in adults!). Bitches who do have Neospora can whelp completely normal litters, smaller litters than anticipated or affected litters. If the bitch is bred again it is, as one long time breeder said and as the literature backs up, a 'crap shoot'. The second litter may be completely normal, smaller or affected - because it is passed transplacentally there is no way of knowing whether Neosporoses will pass the placental barrier, or if the organisms do pass through, then in what numbers, whether they will kill the pup/s in utero or

Continued from page 33 Hence, your other dogs and pups could get the disease by eating uncooked meat... (see above)... but not directly from the affected litter. HOWEVER, and this is where things get complicated, orally challenged dogs (such as your other dogs ingesting oocysts from the faeces on infected pups) have not been known to develop a patent infection, however if the challenge is high enough, they CAN develop a serum antibody response (and hence show a POSITIVE titre level to Neospora). This then confuses the issue in that the test is an ANTIBODY test that proves exposure to the organism but not necessarily proves that the patient has Neosporosis - but a patient showing clinical signs PLUS a titre level, is strongly suspected to have Neosporosis (Dr T King, 2017). WHY am I writing all of this you may ask? Well, because I have a Neospora litter. I have 2 affected puppies out of 9 born. It has been a roller coaster ride for me over the past 7 weeks. The more answers I find, the more questions I have. All puppies are being treated with the recommended dose of Clindamycin and Trimethoprim-Sulp for 4 to 8 weeks and will be titre tested along the way to ensure we are on the right track.

I have been contacted by breeders from around the globe who have or had a litter of Neospora puppies. It is interesting to note that in most cases, the bitch showed no symptoms and it was not until the pups showed symptoms that the diagnosis was made. There is also a case of an 18 month old dog developing symptoms. From my understanding this is rare, but can happen if the dogs immune system is compromised. At this point I need to re-iterate... we are attempting to do the right thing by the puppies, by the breeders involved and by all breeders out there. I am working with specialist vets, local vets, scientists and other breeders who have had similar experiences in an effort to find answers. This CAN hit any breeder at any time. It is not a breed specific issue. I need to thank a few people. Research Results Supplied by Jody Hafey Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, We are pleased to inform you about research progress regarding cerebellar dysfunction in Belgian Shepherd dogs. After intensive research in an international consortium we were able to identify a genetic defect in Belgian Shepherd dogs, especially in Malinois and Tervueren dogs, which causes a severe neurological disease with monogenic autosomal recessive inheritance. The disease was termed “Spongy Degeneration with Cerebellar Ataxia Subtype 1� (SDCA1). Thanks to the results of our study, genetic testing for SDCA1 is now possible at specialised laboratories, which helps to avoid the non-intentional breeding of affected puppies. The genetic test is currently offered by LABOKLIN (https:// shop.labogen.com/en) und OPTIGEN (www.optigen.com/opt9_sdca1_test. html). The Institute of Genetics of the University of Bern does not provide a genetic test for SDCA1. It is important to note that the identified genetic defect mutation cannot explain all forms of cerebellar dysfunction in Belgian Shepherd dogs. We are aware of clinically very similar, additional forms of cerebellar dysfunction in Belgian Shepherd dogs, which are caused by other currently unidentified genetic defects.

Hi All, Below are some groundbreaking research results conducted in Switzerland at the Institute of Genetics, University of Bern. This group of Scientists have discovered a genetic marker for a disease that has been striking down dogs for a while now. It is important to note, that there have been NO recorded cases in Australia of Ataxia, to my knowledge and I have looked, but this is good for all of us to be aware of.
We would like to identify these additional genetic defects in the future. Explanation of the genetic test result: There are two copies of each gene in the genome of a dog. One copy is inherited from the father and one from the mother. If a trait is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, it means that an animal will only get the disease if it receives defective gene copies from both the father and the mother.
Thus to produce an affected puppy, both parents (father and mother) must carry the defective gene. However, the carriers with only one copy of the defect will not be affected themselves. Carriers have a 50% probability of passing the defective gene copy to their offspring. If two carriers are mated, there is a risk that 25% of the offspring will be affected by SDCA1.

This animal does not carry the genetic defect and has no risk of developing SDCA1. The dog cannot pass the genetic defect to its offspring.
This animal carries one copy of the defec tive gene. The dog has no risk of developing SDCA1. However, this defect will be passed to its offspring with a probability of 50%. Such an animal should only be mated to a clear animal.
This animal carries two copies of the defective gene and is affected by SDCA1. Most SDCA1 affected dogs are euthanised by the 17th week of life because of severe neurological symptoms and poor quality of life.

Therefore, the mating of two carriers should be strictly avoided (also legally forbidden in many countries). Carriers do not have to be categorically excluded from breeding. However, carriers should only be mated to clear dogs so that no homozygous affected puppies will be produced. Private Peter Haran and Tracker Dog CAESAR

rivate (Pte) Peter Haran was born in The United Kingdom (UK) and was raised in Zimbabwe (in those days Rhodesia). In 1961 the Haran family returned to the UK and in 1964, moved on to Adelaide, South Australia. Peter completed his high schooling in Adelaide and at the age of seventeen he enlisted in the Australian Regular Army in January 1966. He attended the 1st Recruit Training Battalion at Kapooka in NSW and then on to the Infantry Centre at Ingleburn near Sydney. Peter was well under the age for overseas postings (nineteen years minimum age) and as the Tracking Wing was being raised at the Infantry Centre with a focus on tracking and dog handling, Peter was asked if he would like to train as a tracker dog handler. He did, and on arrival was teamed up with a dog named CAESAR. In early 1967, he completed his tracker training and was posted to the 2nd Battalion of The Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR) with CAESAR.

South Vietnam In mid-1967, the RAAF flew the advance party of 2RAR to Butterworth Air Force Base in Malaysia where the dogs received their inoculations, then on to Saigon in South Vietnam and then on to the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) base at Nui Dat in Phouc Tuy Province. In June 1967 the tempo of operations was very active in Phouc Tuy Province. Peter remembers two tracking operations which were very testing for himself and CAESAR. This is the first – in Peter’s words: “The area known as the ‘light green and the long green’ was situated about eleven kilometres to the Southwest of Nui Dat. This area had a notorious reputation for being festooned with large quantities of the M16 mine – also known as the 'jumping jack' because it would fly up about a metre into the air before it fired. The results of casualties from this mine were always horrific. One day 12 Platoon (Pl) of D Coy had been involved in a large contact with the enemy in the Light Green area. A dog team was called for. I grabbed my combat gear, collected CAESAR and went to the 2RAR helicopter landing pad – codenamed 'Eagle Farm'. There were three of us. My coverman, a machine gunner, myself and of course, CAESAR. We boarded a Huey helicopter, took off, and within ten minutes we arrived at the D Coy position. We quickly deplaned and were taken to the contact site. There was a great deal of blood scattered on the sandy ground as well as streaked along some bushes. My coverman said “I’m ready when you are”. The Pl Commander (who had been commanding 12 Pl for only one week) gave the order to commence the track. CAESAR began his track at a fast pace and the tracking team followed at the end of his leash. My coverman and I followed CAESAR for a couple of hundred metres, when we came upon a T junction in the track. This was a dangerous situation and I willed CAESAR to point. He did not. Instead, CAESAR came straight back to me and sat on my foot. He had never done this before. We were now stopped and exposed in the middle of an open track. The next thing, there was a terrible explosion and we discovered that the Pl Commander had stepped on a mine. It exploded and blew off both his legs. An engineer team arrived and began clearing the mine blast area with their countermine equipment. Once cleared the casualties were treated and evacuated by DUSTOFF medical helicopter. The two sappers then went in front of Peter and continued their sweep for mines along the track which lead to the T junction.

At the T junction the sappers removed a large anti-tank mine and four M16 anti-personnel ‘jumping jacks’. CAESAR had never received any training in mine and explosive detection, but he was suspicious of what he found at the T junction and for good measure, came back and sat on my foot so that I would not continue toward the danger”. The dog knew that there were bad things waiting for his boss and refused to let him move on. Canine intelligence at it’s best! But there was worse to come at that very place. This was the same T junction where, two years later, another infantry platoon would be cut to pieces by M16 mines and create the inspiration for that haunting song, 'I Was Only Nineteen'. Operational duty continued out of Nui Dat on tracking missions until late 1967 when Operation 'Santa Fe' was mounted in the north east of Phuoc Tuy Province. The two Australian Battalions were to sweep each side of the Firestone Trail and the Cavalry were to provide close protection to American Engineers. However, there was a big contact which hit the Engineers hard. There were serious American casualties. In Peter’s words: “We were in a Fire Support Base when an urgent call came to provide a tracker team to support the Americans. The enemy had fired a number of RPG 7 rockets at the bulldozers and hit them. The enemy then did their usual 'bug out' back into incredibly thick jungle. The Cavalry carried us to the site of the contact and we were escorted by a group of American GIs who were armed with a wide assortment of weapons, wore military clothing of sorts and had a ferocious disposition to ‘kick ass’ when they closed with the enemy. At the site of the contact, CAESAR picked up the scent and we took off in pursuit of the enemy group. The jungle was really dark, but had a small path to follow which the enemy had used. The GIs took up an aggressive assault formation behind us and we pressed into the bush at tracking speed. As we penetrated deeper into the jungle we came across huge bomb craters, divisions of track into different directions, an assortment of vegetation types, and of course the heat and humidity. CAESAR kept tracking the enemy despite the confusion of tracks. After several hundred metres, I was sweating and it was an effort to keep up with my dog. Then CAESAR pointed. I looked ahead at a bend in the track and saw the flash of bare skin of a man’s arm and a patch of black uniform above it. They were seventy-five metres ahead. I told Bob “there’s the enemy” and he came forward with rifle in shoulder, gave the thumbs down (enemy sighted) to the Americans and they immediately and very quietly, went into attack formation. I could then see at least three enemy soldiers standing in a clearing ahead.

Caesar
I looked down at Bob’s feet and saw a Claymore directional mine at his feet, but the detonator was out of the device and it could not be fired. Quite clearly, the enemy did not know that we were right behind them. Bob opened fire, the enemy responded and then the Americans ‘hooked in’. There was a massive fire fight and I had to keep CAESAR on a very tight lead as he was not happy with the enormous din that was going on around him.
Caesar was retired to the Australian Embassy in Saigon in July 1970 where he became the absolute centre of attention of Jeremy and Sally White and their family. However, Caesar revisited Peter in a most unusual way. At the 'Welcome Home Parade' in Sydney on Saturday 3 October 1987, Peter was gathered with a bunch of his mates after the march in the Phoenician Club. They had “hooked in” to the beer and were enjoying each other’s company.
The Americans then launched their attack and swept the enemy away. Some VC/NVA bolted down the track, followed for a short while by the GIs. A VC/NVA officer was wounded and the American officer wanted to carry him back for questioning. We returned to the Cavalry as quickly as we could. When we arrived, we mounted quickly into the Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) and travelled back toward the American base camp. On the way back, we were attacked from a flank by enemy troops firing RPGs and small arms. The Cavalry had plenty of experience with these situations and immediately counter-attacked. An American Trooper on one of the APCs was wounded and knocked down from his machine gun. We arrived back into the Cavalry base where we were treated to RocknRoll music, hot steaks and cases of beer. We stayed overnight with the Americans and next morning we helicoptered back to 2RAR”. At the end of his tour of duty, Peter had to hand CAESAR over to the incoming dog handler. This included obedience training and practice tracks inside the Nui Dat base. And then, Peter said Goodbye to Caesar for the last time and left Nui Dat. He would never see his dog again.
Peter was tapped on the back by an unidentifiable person who pushed something into Peter’s hand with the words “This is for you”. Peter took the item to a chair and sat down to look at it. He found it hard to focus at first because it looked like a twenty cent piece. But then focus kicked in and Peter had a heart-moving experience. The item was a silver identity disc and on it was engraved 'D6NO3 CAESAR'. His dog had returned to him. Peter Haran sat there with CAESAR’s ID discs in hand and sobbing tears of fond memory for an excellent dog. Peter returned to Australia (RTA) and was posted to the Tracker Wing at the Infantry Centre. He was promoted to Corporal and instructed on tracking skills and dog handling, but paid particular attention to the threat of mines and booby traps. Peter returned to the War in South Vietnam for a second tour of duty but not as a dog handler. Peter discharged for the ARA in February 1972 and worked as a store manager until 1976 when Peter became a journalist with News Limited. Peter has written four books based on the Vietnam War. In my opinion the best of them is 'Trackers' - New Holland Publishers - and available from the Australian Defence Force Trackers and War Dogs Association on their website at: www.aussietrackers.org It is a book written in the raw language of an Australian infantry dogger with his war dog at war. A good read.

I am an All Breeds Judge through the Canadian Kennel Club. I have been in the purebred dog world for over 50 years, breeding dogs, working as a professional handler and then judging for over 20 years. I have judged around the world and am very blessed to have been to so many countries. I truly love judging and it is my passion. I have been a breeder of Dobermann Pinschers, Poodles, Papillons, Whippets and Italian Greyhounds. Although I no longer breed due to my crazy busy life, I still have dogs. Can’t imagine my life without a dog!
I have judged breeds from FCI Groups I II III V VI VII VIII IX X at National Dog Shows, International Dog Shows-Cacib Shows, Championship Shows, Club Shows, Speciality Breed Dog Shows. I award CC, CAC, GREEN tSTAR, CACIB, BOB, BEST in GROUP at all levels, BIS at the Club Shows and Speciality Breed Dog Shows. I judged Best in Show. I am President of the Retriever Club Belgrade in Serbia, member of the Committee in Kennel Club of Serbia kinoloskisrbije@gmail.com, member of GRC U.K. I judged widely across the GLOBE. I have Judged Golden Retriever breed shows in 34 countries. etc... and at many Championship Shows in different countries!
Ana Beatriz Knoll I started my dog interest in 1980 when I owned an English Cocker. My first show as a visitor was in August 1980 and in October the same year I was showing the first dog in the ring. An Afghan Hound, my first show dog. My husband Mario Knoll began his Lhasa breeding about the same year, and at that time he was very involved with Dobermanns too. For many years we have worked both breeds, Lhasas and Afghans, and we had made several champions in Brazil and abroad. Our Kennel called Excalibur Quest worked with Pugs from 1996 till 2003, and from this year till now we´ve been very involved with Pomeranians, as breeders and exhibitors. Actually, we are not showing our dogs very often but we are still very involved in Pomeranian breeding, and also follow my passion for Afghan Hounds. Our Lhasas has been number 01 in the breed since 2006 and always between 5 best in the other years until 2012 when we decided to pause our Lhasa breeding. We were the co-owner of Top Pomeranian in South America. N.01 in the breed and top 10 All Breed 2006/ 2007 in Argentine and Uruguay. We bred the Pomeranian Number 01 All breed in Uruguay 2013. I have been judged as all rounder since 1995 and Mario since 1998 in several Brazilian shows, all breeds and specialties. I had judged in almost all countries from South America, South Africa, Australia, Canada, Mexico, and several European countries like Croatia, Finland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Denmark, Switzerland and Luxemburg.
Mr. Nenad Davidovic I have judged All Breeds from all FCI Groups at National Dog Shows, International Dog Shows-Cacib Shows, Championship Shows, Club Shows, Speciallity Breed Dog Shows. I award CAC, CACIB, BOB, BEST in GROUP at all levels, BEST BRACE,BEST BREEDERS GROUP,BEST IN SHOW BIS. I awarded CACT and CACIT on Field trials too. I have stewarded at all levels. I am the President of the Kennel Club Gornji Milanovac more then 30 years, member of the Committee in Kennel Club of Serbia ksrs@yubc.net, member of the Komission for Judge students at Kennel Club of Serbia over 25 years. I judged in many countries including, Belgium EURODOGSHOW Kortrijk 2 x times, Hungary, Macedonia, Russia at all 11 Zones from west to far east, EUROASIA in Moscow, Romania, Poland, Latvia, Belarus, Bosnia, Italy, Serbia, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, Estonia, Spain, Denmark, Germany, France, Finland, Greece, Bulgary, Montenegro, Azerbijan, lreland, Indonesia, Colombia, Egypt, Luxembourg, China, Brazil, Malla, Sweden etc! I celebrated in 2011. 40 years in Cinollogy, started 1971 with breeding Pointers.

Shharat Sharma The first steps into the vast and wonderful world of show dogs were taken in 1979 when he bought his first FCI Registered Labrador Bitch. The passion for Gun Dogs continued and he added Golden Retrievers, Irish Setters, German Short Haired Pointers and Cocker Spaniels to the Kennels during the first decade. In each of these breeds he achieved fair success and made over 20 champions. The early 1990s saw a shift to Beagles. The breed had been sidelined for many years by show enthusiasts and breeders alike but the import of NZ Ch Jest Aint No Angel saw a dramatic revival of the breed. Shharat is rightfully credited as one of the founders of the modern beagle in India. Since then he has bred over 25 champions under the ‘Ratnbela’ Prefix. His kennel is now a treasure house of the finest blood lines in the world. This year he makes a come back to the show ring with some home bred beagles. Ratnbela has also been home to Dachshunds, Boxers, German Shepherds and Chihuahuas. Granted All Breeds Judging License in 2009, Shharat has judged at most major venues in India. He has also judged the Pug Speciality and Rottweiler Speciality shows in India and Gun Dog Speciality in Western Australia. He has judged prestigious international dog shows in South Africa, Philippines, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Romania, Germany and USA.
Stanley Shen (Singapore) Stanley first started showing dogs in the 1980s as a Junior Handler and it was in this activity that he was to begin a dedicated involvement in the canine world. He was twice Runner-Up Junior Handler of the Year and his repertoire as a handler spans across all Groups including Whippets at Crufts on 2 occasions. In 2001, he was invited to be the guest speaker on a radio talk show to introduce dog shows to the public. This radio program was presented to listeners as 15 minute capsules on a weekly basis. The following year saw him being involved with 'Emily World' and 'Disney Channel' on Cable TV. One was a feature on dog breeders and the other, a spotlight on young people and their hobbies – in this case, dog handling. In 2003, he also attended the Special Judge’s Training Seminar in Japan lectured by Frank Sabella and Mary Beth O’Neil from USA and Fredrik Norgren from Norway. At an administrative level, he was a past Director of the Governing Council of the Singapore Kennel Club. Stanley is licensed to judge All Breeds. Besides Singapore, he has also judged in Canada, China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, Denmark, Japan, America and Brazil.
