The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World

President’s Message for January 2018 Happy new year to everyone! 2018 is set to be a year of change for Dogs Queensland, with many exciting developments to come. Dogs Queensland CEO Joining the Dogs Queensland staff on the 8th January 2018 is our newly appointed CEO, Mr Brian Menke. Brian’s engagement is a new approach for Dogs Queensland and we firmly believe that with his appointment, our organisation will see some positive changes over the next twelve months and into the future. During the next few weeks, we ask that members be patient while Brian settles into his new role, gets his bearings and assesses the priorities at hand. One of the first tasks that Brian will undertake is a full review of the administrative functions and development of a formalised structure for the office. Members will be kept up to date with any changes as they occur. DNA Parentage Profiling A reminder to members that as of 1 st January 2018, all litter registrations lodged must be accompanied with a DNA profile for parentage. This will need to include DNA profiles of the Sire, the Dam and the pups. The requirement will apply where the mating took place on or after 1st January 2018. There seems to be some confusion from members that they must use the services of Orivet for the DNA profiling. This is not correct and members are able to use whichever DNA profiling company they wish to. The only requirement is that the profiling data is returned via Orivet for full integration into our database system.

2 - January 2018

The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World

Dogs Queensland have worked with Orivet to offer members a discounted price for DNA profiling but members do not have to use the services of Orivet if they do not wish to. Many of you have asked very relevant questions. In order to assist with this process and to try and centralise the answers that we have developed in relation to the wide range of queries we have received, the Health Committee have developed a FAQ’s page for your assistance. This can be located on our website under News or using the following link at: www.dogsqueensland.org.au/MemberNewsItemDetail/?id =23875 Here’s to a productive and prosperous 2018 for Dogs Queensland!

Board Notes January 2018 Cyclone and Flood Disaster Assistance All Members are reminded that Dogs Queensland can provide assistance to members who are directly affected by the recent cyclone and flood events throughout Queensland. The relevant document explaining how to apply for assistance can be found on the Dogs Queensland Website.

Sweepstakes in Zones 2 and 3 Some country Kennel Clubs have experienced difficulty in conducting Open Shows. There is a need for either Open Shows or Sweepstakes to be held for 'Distance' Trainee Judges. Regional facilitators are now required to conduct 4 Sweepstakes each year – 2 during Part A lectures and 2 during Part B lectures for trainees in their area. These Sweepstakes may be for all breeds or just for the Group the trainee is studying. It is suggested that these Sweepstakes be held on “Cluster Shows” weekends to maximise numbers. Trainees are required to assist the facilitator in arranging these Sweepstakes.

Stewarding and Writing Appointments All Clubs and organisers of Shows are reminded of their obligation to provide training and that, in instances where Stewards and Writers are to be appointed, preference should be given to people who are part of the Trainee Judges programme.

Announcing Dedication of The War and Service Dog Memorial at Dogs Queensland - Durack memorial will be unveiled and dedicated at Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds, Durack on February 4th, 2018. The Service will start at 12 noon and end at 1:00pm with refreshments to be served in the Function Room at 247 King Avenue, Durack. Federal, State and Local Government representatives have been invited to attend, along with the Governor General of Australia and the Governor of Queensland as well as the New Minister for Veteran Affairs. Representatives from RAAF Dogs Handlers Association, RSPCA, Australian War Dogs Memorial Organisation, RSL Queensland, veterans, members of Dogs Queensland, special guests, and members of RSL Forest Lake Sub Branch are invited to attend. The community will be encouraged to attend the dedication ceremony. The memorial is dedicated to all War and Service Animals from the Australian Defence Forces and will be a permanent place where we can remember the courage of our canine partners. The bronze memorial (pictured right) will be located near the entrance of the function room at Dogs Queensland, Durack.

Why is this Memorial so important? Dogs played crucial roles in WWI. In fact, they proved to be just as dependable as soldiers. Their jobs were diverse in combat and some of their roles included sniffing out enemies, carrying supplies, finding the wounded, delivering messages and first aid supplies as well as providing companionship and boosting the troops' morale. Many dog breeds were used during WWI, but the most popular types were medium-sized, intelligent and trainable breeds. Two breeds were often used because of their superior strength, agility, territorial nature and trainability: the German Shepherd Dog and Dobermann Pinscher, both native to Germany. Other breed types associated with WWI were the Terriers, most often employed as ‘ratters' - dogs trained to hunt and kill rats in the trenches. Dogs also helped carry supplies, pulling small carts of military supplies and ammunition over the difficult terrain. Over a million dogs died during the First World War. During WW2 and the Korean War, dogs were used extensively. In the Vietnam War 11 dogs were used, mostly black Labradors, and one of the plaques on the memorial will highlight them. On a separate plaque the hero dogs that served in Afghanistan will be remembered. Sadly, due to Government restrictions the dogs serving in Vietnam were not returned to Australia, and many soldiers sadly miss their faithful companions. The dogs serving in Afghanistan, who survived the conflict, were thankfully returned to Australia. (Source: Bob Richards President RSL Forest Lake)

Ancient bonds between man (humanity) and dog The history of man and dog goes back to ancient times. Ancient records and writings have revealed the close bond between mankind and dog in troubled times of warfare and conflict. The timeline below provides an overview of some of the recorded history of man and dog in the battlefield. • Mid-7th century BC: In the war waged by the Ephesians, the Magnesian horsemen were accompanied by a war dog. The dogs were released first and broke the enemy ranks, followed by an assault of spears, then a cavalry charge. • 525 BC: Battle of Pelusium, Cambyses II uses a psychological tactic against the Egyptians, placing dogs and other animals in the front line to take advantage of Egyptian religious reverence for animals. • 490 BC: At the Battle of Marathon, a dog follows his soldier master into battle against the Persians. • 480 BC: Xerxes I of Persia is accompanied by vast packs of Indian hounds when he invades Greece. • 281 BC: Lysimachus is slain during the Battle of Corupedium and his body was discovered on the battlefield, guarded by his faithful dog. • 231 BC: the Roman consul Marcus Pomponius Matho, leading the Roman legions through the inland of Sardinia, used "dogs from Italy" to hunt out natives who tried to hide in caves. • 120 BC: Bituito, king of the Arvernii, attacked a small force of Romans, using just the dogs he had in his army.

• 1500s: Mastiffs and other large breeds were used extensively by Spanish conquistadors against Native Americans. • 1914–1918: Dogs were used by international forces to deliver vital messages. About a million dogs were killed in action. Sergeant Stubby, a Boston Terrier, was the most decorated war dog of World War I and the only dog to be nominated for rank and then promoted to sergeant through combat. • 1943–1945: The United States Marine Corps used dogs, donated by their American owners, in the Pacific theatre to help take islands back from Japanese occupying forces. • 1966–1973: Approximately 5,000 US war dogs served in the Vietnam War; about 10,000 US servicemen served as dog-handlers during the war, and the K9 units are estimated to have saved over 10,000 human lives. • 2011: United States Navy SEALs used a Belgian Malinois military working dog named Cairo in Operation Neptune Spear, in which Osama bin Laden was killed. (Source: Nigel Allsop – Anzac of the Year 2017)

D Planning has commenced for the All Dogs Sports Spectacular 2018. The event in 2017 was certainly spectacular, with the theme 'Dogs Queensland Rocks', with many of the exhibitors getting into the ‘swing’ of things with their breed stalls. There were poodles and poodle skirts aplenty, together with a juke box, Rock n Roll dance demonstrations, Classic car display and 4KQ Hound Dog street team with a Milk Shake bar. Over 3500 visitors enjoyed the action-packed activities including Conformation shows, Obedience, Agility, Rally-O, Lure Coursing plus demonstrations of Weight Pull, Fly-Ball, Dances with Dogs, Tracking and more. Fun packed activities for the children including Finding Wally, Face Painting, Love a Dog Lounge and Doggie cup cake decorating competitions. Overall, this event is attracting more and more visitors each year and along with that generating more public and media interest. It’s a great opportunity to showcase most of the Canine activities and invite people to our Sports Grounds at Durack.

In 2018, we are celebrating a special Platinum anniversary; Dogs Queensland celebrates its 70th year. Prior to 1948, there was an older Kennel Associations (circa 1921) and two other Clubs who all had their own stud books, registers, licensing and Judges. On 1st March 1948, a new organisation was formed and the name decided upon was the Canine Control Council (Queensland). “It was from this date that canine affairs in Queensland began to assume some semblance of order, throughout the whole range of activities.” (The Canine Control Council Queensland – D W Armstrong 1988, p74)

What is an Australian Cattle Dog? Writen by Wayne Carter hen the Australian Cattle Dog was first developed back in the 1800s there were several different types of dog that were trialled and bred together to make the breed what it is today. Most people would be surprised to know the dogs in question were the Dingo, Dalmatian, Rough Collie, Bull Terrier and Russian Poodle. When judging an Australian Cattle Dog you should see an example of the breed that shows a ‘suspicious or watchful glint’ and a white mark on their head called the ‘Bentley’s mark’ which is also a strong and noticeable characteristic. When a cattle dog is being judged and walking down a line-up of dogs (or guarding their property) they should also be tough, robust and full of confidence.

Regarding temperament, it is important to note that an Australian Cattle Dog that backs away, shows its tail between its legs or demonstrates signs of timidness is not showing the characteristics of the breed.

When a cattle dog is being judged and walking down a line-up of dogs (or guarding their property) they should also be tough, robust and full of confidence. As a pet the Australian Cattle Dog is a very loyal family member that will bond quickly with its new home and take on the role as a protector for both its owners and its property. Photo credits: Cobalt Photography, supplied by Wayne Carter

Correct movement and a structurally sound build in any working breed of dog is also of course very important.

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog breed began evolving in the early 1830s because of the need for a dog that could work cattle in Australia’s very harsh environment. The breed that we see today is the result of many years of careful thought, and selective breeding by dedicated people. Three breeds of dog went into the making of the ‘Stumpy’. First there was the crossing of the Dingo with an English breed of dog called the Smithfield (these dogs were naturally bob tailed) which is where the gene comes from that is still present in the ‘Stumpy’ today. Then the progeny from these matings were crossed with the smooth coated blue Merle Collie (commonly referred to today as the German Coolie) and so a breed of dog was born that cattlemen, then and today, swear is the best working dog in the world.

Average size, weight and lifespan: Dogs: Bitches: Weight: Lifespan:

46 - 51cm (18 - 20 ins height at shoulder) 43 - 49cm (17 - 19 ins height at shoulder) Between 18 - 22kg 10 to 15 years of age (approx)

Personality, Characteristics and Temperament: The ‘Stumpy’ is a loyal, courageous and devoted animal that possesses natural aptitude in the working and control of cattle. It is suspicious of strangers and will protect its family and possessions with its life. It is not an aggresive dog but if pushed will not back down without a fight. The ‘Stumpy’ loves nothing better than to be able to spend time in company of its owner, doing whatever is asked of it. Although the ‘Stumpy’ can sometimes be very stubborn and owners should always be firm without being cruel, as the ‘Stumpy’ does not tolerate harsh treatment.

Compatibility with other pets: The ‘Stumpy’ will get along with other animals in a household as long as they are introduced slowly and without tension. The best way to do this is by allowing animals to see and smell each other through a wire frame for a few weeks, until they realise they pose no threat to each other.

Care requirements:

In conclusion:

Even though the ‘Stumpy’ is a working dog, it does well in a suburban household as long as exercise requirements (and need for mental stimulation) are met. Obedience training with the ‘Stumpy’ is a necessity as its intelligence needs harnessing, so that it doesn’t dream up activities itself - such as digging tunnels, pulling washing from the line, pruning trees, jumping fences etc!

Now you know a little about the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog. If you have decided that this is the dog for you or you want more information, please contact one of our affiliate breed Clubs or Dogs Queensland. Both will be able to give you information about the breed, available puppies and also suggest dog shows where you can see the breed and speak to breeders. Source credits: Information supplied from ANKC literature.

The ‘Stumpy’ must be socialised with other animals and people from an early age and throughout its life. This breed also has a naturally short coat which only requires five minutes daily grooming.
