The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for June 2017 Animal Management (Protecting Puppies) and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2016 (Act) As you read this email the date of 26th May 2017 will have passed and this legislation is now in force, with Dogs Queensland being noted as an approved entity. As has been documented in my email updates to you, the Office has been working to obtain your permission to provide your designated details to the Queensland State Government to assist with the approved entity status and I thank you for your cooperation thus far. May I remind everyone again that the accreditation (membership) number, date of accreditation ending, local Government area and either phone number or email, will be displayed publicly. Under the legislation, all dog breeders have to be registered one way or another. If breeder members choose to not provide permission for Dogs Queensland to provide their designated details, then they will have to register as a private individual, there is no other option. Our General Manager, Rob Harrison and Senior Vice President, Norma Zimmerle, attended a Meeting on 16th May with Jim Thompson, Chief Biosecurity Officer, to discuss the launch of the Queensland Dog Breeder Register and the practical implications of its launch. Also in attendance were senior representatives from Local Government Authorities Queensland (LGAQ), Biosecurity Qld representatives and Mark Townend, RSPCA Qld CEO. It is a testament to our hard work over the last 2 - 3 years that Dogs Queensland is now automatically invited to these high level stakeholder meetings and is a fundmental part of any decision making process. I will share with you comments made by Mr Townend repeatedly at the Meeting that in no way were ‘Dogs Queensland the target of the RSPCA’, and that he could only recall 4 or 5 issues over the last 10 years that involved Dogs Queensland Breeders. Although that is not perfect, it is good to get this feedback from the RSPCA. Since the Meeting, Biosecurity has put to together some information on the legislation to assist Members that I share below •

The Meeting ended with an agreement that the stakeholders in attendance would meet once again two weeks post legislation introuduction.

Notice to advertisers The Trade Practices Act came into force on 1st October 1974. Certain provisions of the act relating to consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers of advertisements. In view of the obvious impossibility of our ensuring that advertisements submitted for publication comply with the act, advertisers themselves need to ensure that the provisions of the act are strictly complied with. In cases of doubt, advertisers are advised to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material.

Cairns City Kennel Club Kitchen Project Grand Opening Written by Gordon Mayne
L - R: Gordon Mayne (left) and Ley James (far right), Club President, thank Mr Rob Pyne MP (centre) for the funding made available from the Queensland Government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund (courtesy J. Pyne)
In March 2017 the Cairns City Kennel Club celebrated the official opening of its new kitchen. 18 months ago a project team was formed to start the processes of planning for what became one of the largest projects undertaken by the Club in nearly 20 years. The project team, comprising of Kerry Frame, Meade Oswald, Marilyn McKee, Jean Wilkinson and Gordon Mayne, spent hours going over quotes and design concepts to come up with the final plan in readiness to put together an application for $33,000 in funding from the Queensland Government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund. It took three attempts and June 2016 the Club was notified that the grant application was successful. Demolition of the old kitchen was the easy part. The old kitchen, despite its solid steel frame, was no match for the hoard of volunteers armed with the crow bars, hammers and saws. In just under 2 days the kitchen was removed and the entire clubhouse interior was repainted. Installation was made easy by the team at All Season Home Improvements here in Cairns. Frank and Dave worked closely with the project team to ensure installation went as smoothly as possible. Everything was considered including flooring, appliances, plumbing and electrical. The club also received support from local businesses and tradesmen; Kennedys Betta Home Living, BIG Electrics and Bruce Barry Plumbing. The Official Opening was conducted by Mr Rob Pyne MP, State Government Member for Cairns, on Saturday 25th March 2017.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Also in attendance were Cr Richie Bates, Cairns Regional Council, Ms Barbara Murfet, Director Dogs Queensland, and the Club’s Patron and President of the Cairns Show Association Mr Ian Allan. This was a great opportunity to showcase the diversity and important services the Club provides to the Cairns community. The Club hosts a minimum of 14 weekend events throughout the year including seminars, workshops, conformation shows and obedience and agility trails. It is estimated that the Club generates over $20,000 in tourism revenue for the region. In his speech Mr Pyne highlighted the value of volunteers and the contribution they make to the community, “You see local people in this area rolling up their sleeves, getting their hands dirty and getting the job done which is very satisfying, so I congratulate you (the Club) and the work you have done.” The highlight of the opening night was the Obedience and Conformation judging demonstrations. The Obedience demonstration, overseen by Mrs Kesley Court with commentary by Ms Barb Murfet, showed off some of the skills of the Club’s members in the Obedience ring. Finishing with Cr Richie Bates having to select the obedience dog most likely to become Mayor of Cairns.

Continued from page 11 Ace (Haveloc Eli), owned and handled by Ms Annette Wooley, took out the honours after much deliberation from Cr Bates. Over in the Conformation Show ring, Mr Ley James, Club President demonstrated how In-Show judging was conducted; 1 dog from each of the 7 groups was presented. Mr Pyne had the envious task of selecting the dog most likely to become the next Premier. Mr Pyne was looking for some specific qualities, noting that Queensland is a big State and the winner had to be able to travel to all regions with grace and ease. Elly May (Sup Ch Karakush Elly May Clampett), owned and handled by Ms Bev Houston, was the clear winner for Mr Pyne. Special thanks go to all of the Club volunteers who helped throughout the project from planning to helping with the official opening. Thanks also to the official guests who took time out of their busy schedule to be part of the event. The Cairns City Kennel Club prides itself on being the largest all breeds and obedience Club in Queensland and understands the value in the Club’s diverse membership. IN LOVING MEMORY
Clotilda (Tilly) Lazzarich In memory of a dear friend
illy passed away on April 10th aged 78. We first came to know Tilly in the mid-1970s in North Queensland. She and her late husband, Tranquillo, and daughter, Albina, began showing Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in 1975, about the same time that we started showing Boxers. They joined the Innisfail Kennel Club in 1977 and worked tirelessly for the club over about 40 years. Both Tilly and Tranquillo became life members. When we returned to North Queensland in the late 1980s we joined the Innisfail Kennel Club which at that time was suffering from lack of members. The Lazzarich’s were the main stay holding things together, always willing to do whatever they could to keep the club running. After we left the north some 23 years ago, Tilly remained a very good friend. For all those years she always remembered our birthdays and Christmas with wonderful cards – almost always a Boxer card and if none could be found, at least something ‘doggy’. She was a special person, reliable and true, and also a very tough person. Many will remember her plight when their home in Mourilyan was completely destroyed by Cyclone Larry in 2006. Tilly was the one that was shown to the world through the media. But she battled on at the time living in the Kennels being the only surviving structure on her property for 6 months until her new house was built. Farewell Tilly. You will be remembered with fondness and respect for the gentle, kind and dedicated person you were. David and Helen Weil

Obedience State Trials Sub Committee Annual Awards The Queensland Dog World
Presentation Dinner 2016 On Saturday 14th January, the Annual Awards Presentation function conducted by the Dogs Queensland Obedience State Trials Sub Committee was held at Durack. The evening is a celebration of the achievements of individual competitors and Clubs, an opportunity to get together and relax with fellow enthusiasts, and to recognise excellence in our sports. We were also delighted to welcome Dogs Queensland Directors, Sandra Mundt, Ainslie Carius, Norma and Kevin Zimmerle, and Barbara and Col Murfet. Performance sports competitors really appreciate Directors taking an interest in and joining in the recognition of achievements in these fields.
This year was also the first time for Championship Titles for Rally Obedience. Championship titles and Dog of the Year awards were based on applications from competitors; others may have achieved similar accomplishments but did not apply for their recognition at this function.
Participants enjoyed an amazing smorgasbord of food brought by the guests with desserts provided by the Sub Committee and birthday cake as well (Happy Birthday Ainslie).
It was especially pleasing to see so many different breeds qualifying for top honours. Our thanks to Carolyn Ryan for all the great photos.
The evening saw the presentation of Championship and Grand Championship awards in Obedience, Tracking and Track and Search as well as Dog of the Year awards and Club shields.

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
The Bullmastiff Written by Albert H. Hope, Grallon Bullmastiffs he origins of the Bullmastiff date back to the 19th century in the UK. Bred originally by g a m e ke e p e r s to d e fe n d co u nt r y estates from poachers, the Bullmastiff is a combination of Mastiff and the extinct Old English Bulldog (not to be confused with today’s Bulldog). This combination was thought to be ideal combining the strength and power of the Mastiff (60%) with the tenacity and activity of the Old English Bulldog (40%). The OEB was a much longer legged dog than todays and was indeed used for bull baiting. Gamekeepers were looking to breed a dog with great power and activity – strong and active enough to knock a man to the ground and hold him until he arrived to resolve the situation. The breed was originally referred to as The Gamekeepers Night Dog and many kennels have integrated some of these words within their kennel name. The first registrations with the UK KC were in 1920’s and since that time the breed has evolved and developed from that early type to the dog we know today, due to the dedication of numerous breeders over the years.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
The gamekeepers preferred colour for the dog was brindle as it gave great camouflage cover for their night time work. How bizarre then that this colour was nearly lost after the second World War and it was indeed due to the dedication of one such kennel, Ted and Florence Warren (Harbex Bullmastiffs), that the colour survived. It is widely believed that the pedigree of EVERY brindle today can be traced back to Highland Laddie (sire of Pearly King of Harbex and Peregrine of Harbex). The breed is normally even tempered with an amiable disposition, quite at odds to its original purpose, and does make a wonderful family pet. However, there are many points to consider before buying a Bullmastiff puppy. This is a large breed requiring careful attention as it grows from puppy through to adulthood.

Continued from page 25 Do you have a large garden or access to other areas for free running? Bullmastiffs have enormous growth rates and these young bones and joints should never be overworked/overwalked in the early days. Free exercise is ideal, the puppy will rest naturally when tired. This will allow the joints and bones to grow and develop correctly, resulting in a sound young adult who shouldn’t have problems in later years. Bullmastiffs, like most working breeds, require a healthy balanced diet with correct feeding regimes if they are to develop the body and soundness desired by the breed standard. The breed has a short coat which requires little grooming to maintain its condition.
The breed is normally even tempered with an amiable disposition, quite at odds to its original purpose, and does make a wonderful family pet. Bullmastiffs can be very stubborn – so great patience is helpful when training. Just to illustrate how stubborn, my favourite from my own kennel was a beautiful pale fawn bitch Hialeah Constant Craving for Tartuffe. She was so keen to show – a born show off, however even from an early age she simply refused to be stacked in the ring and had to be shown 'free standing'. I have attached a picture of her after she had won the Limit Bitch class at the Welsh and West of England Bullmastiff Championship Show, under judge Pamela Cross-Stern (see opposite page). There were upwards of 15 pictures taken and this was the only one where she stood still! As a breed Bullmastiffs are loyal, faithful and have truly endearing personalities. There have been many kennels in the UK over the years whose influence on type cannot be ignored, however for the purpose of this article and todays breeder’s exhibitors I will mention only a few. Oldwell, Naukeen, Pitmans, Copperfield, Bunsoro and Graecia are perhaps the names that are best known throughout the world. Their dedication to breeding for their own particular 'type' has led to their stock being instantly recognisable.
26 - June 2017
There is a great variation in type which is always going to happen when the origins of the breed belong in two different breeds and kennels line breed for traits/qualities. However, providing that the stock produced are healthy, fit for purpose, free from serious faults and meet the breed standard criteria, there should be a type that finds favour with many fanciers. The breed standard details what a Bullmastiff should look like and how it should behave. It is THE reference for all breeders and judges: • • •
Temperament: High spirited, alert and faithful General appearance: Powerful build, symmetrical, showing great strength, but not cumbersome, sound and active Characteristics: Powerful, enduring active and reliable
For pet owners these will be the three most important areas to consider before buying a puppy. However, for breeders whilst these are important, of even greater importance will be the other sections of the standard that truly define breed type. Breed type should NEVER be ignored or overlooked. A quick look at the breed standard will show that the greatest detail is in the section Head and Skull. To be honest this is as it should be as the head is what defines the breed. There is considerable detail regarding muzzle widths, stop etc . I have been fortunate enough to have judged in several overseas countries as well as in the UK and can say that there are some dogs in every country that I have judged who would do well anywhere in the world. It is true that there are some types more prevalent in some countries than in other. The advent of AI has allowed breeders to import semen from overseas dogs in a bid to widen the gene pool. This does come with issues though as not every dog in the pedigree may be known or have been seen, however sometimes the risk can reap wonderful results. I have been fortunate to have been involved with this wonderful breed for over 33 years now and love it as much today as I did back in the beginning. If this article has piqued your interest in the breed – then I am truly pleased.

During June there are a number of Breed Specialty Shows being held at Durack which Zone 2 members will be travelling to attend. Good luck and safe travels to all attending.
Show Dates With weather events beyond our control wreaking a bit of havoc with the show calendar in the earlier part of the year, it is probably an opportune time to talk about show dates. Each year, Dogs Queensland publishes a calendar of draft show dates for the following year which is published on the Dogs Queensland website. Due to the way that dates can roll forward into and out of weekends, Ag Society Show dates can change and also changes of dates by other clubs (within or outside our own Zone), there can sometimes be impacts on a particular club’s shows that may not have occurred in the past. I would strongly encourage all clubs to check the draft calendar each year, identify any potential issues and take action as early as possible. Changes to the calendar for the next year are generally accepted up to the last Friday in June so there is a lot of time to review dates and submit any changes. Perhaps there would also be some advantage in clubs working together to create a show circuit over several weeks which would attract travellers who would not normally venture to our area.

Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World
The important aspect of this is that clubs need to review the draft calendar, talk and work together to overcome and difficulties or maximise their opportunities. There is still time for clubs to review and address any issues for 2018 so please check out the draft dates.
Agricultural Society Shows With the Ag Show season really starting to get going, please try to support the dog section of these events to ensure that we can continue to use these shows to display to the public what we do and our dogs.
Submissions If you have any ideas or topics you would like to submit for this column, I am more than happy to accept them. We try to find interesting and informative content, so anything that fits this bill would be great. Submissions can be sent to me at: craig.pettett1@bigpond.com Until next time.
All shows struggle to meet costs however, Ag Shows do face some quite significant charges including a 17.5% surcharge for most shows (this is much higher than the 10% most clubs pay), advertising costs, stationery/paperwork, ribbons, prizes, judges costs and the like. Often the entries to these, particularly in regional areas, are not terribly high so the costs quickly exceed any revenue that the show society gains, and many have made a loss on the dog section for some time. By supporting these shows with our entries it is a great promotional tool and we can hopefully keep them running although it is an uphill battle. Just this year in Zone 2 the Emerald, Monto and The Caves Ag Shows are not happening. We are hoping that we can get these back but we will need the support of as many exhibitors as possible to do so.
Thanking our volunteers In Zone 2, there are many fantastic events and shows being offered to exhibitors. Some examples include the wonderful Easter Shows at Bundaberg, the work that the Sarina Club have done at their grounds to create a top-class facility and many, many others who are offering a great product to exhibitors. We are so lucky to have so many proactive and committed volunteers and I would like to say a big thank you to all those who have worked and volunteered to make this all possible. Without our volunteers, shows and events simply wouldn’t happen and we wouldn’t have a hobby to enjoy. Dogs Queensland is running the volunteer or the year award again this year, so it may be a good time for everyone to put on their thinking caps and consider submitting a nomination for someone who does a lot for your dog community.

JLPP - Juvenile Laryngeale Paralysis and Polyneuropathy The following article was written by Dr. Prof. Peter Friedrich, President of the German Kennel Club, breed judge, working judge and member of the breeding committee of Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler Klub (ADRK), and is being published with permission of the VDH, the ADRK and Total Rottweiler Magazine for the translation.
Introduction: Genuine Breeder or Puppy Producer? With the promotion of HEALTHY dog ownership it would seem obvious that breeders would embrace DNA tests available for their breed. Yet this is not the case. A serious problem has arisen in Rottweilers called Juvenile Laryngeal Paralysis and Polyneuropathy. Dogs with this condition can develop repeated bouts of inhalation pneumonia, often resulting in death or can even have bouts of severe choking. A DNA test is now available for this horrendous condition and one would hope that breeders everywhere utilise this to rid the breed of this mutation. The genuine breeders will do so.
Dr Robert Zammit BVSc The article on JLPP sets out in detail what is in this severe disease, how it is inherited, and how and why it must be fought. Although it is hoped that the disease is not yet widespread, complete testing of all breeding animals must continue. It is expressly emphasised that at most adult dogs are carriers of the disease, even if they cannot fall ill, because the disease had shown at a young age. In Germany, as of November 1st, 2016, breedings may only be carried out with animals that have been tested for JLPP. This means that of all the animals that are to be found in breeding use, an oral mucosa sample must be taken and evaluated, and the result must be entered in the pedigree. Samples (in duplicate) must be taken by an LG-breed warden, breeding judge or veterinarian and samples sent to the laboratory Laboklin for investigation. Before mating, the owner of the dogs involved must access the pedigree to verify that each pairing is permitted in the future. ADRK Executive Board

1. What is JLPP?
Type A individual = homozygous unaffected genotype: the dog’s genetic make-up is homozygous unaffected ('completely clear'). Neither allele has the unfavourable mutation. In layman’s terma: the dog has two good alleles. This dog will never develop JLPP. The more dogs in the population which are like this, the better.
Type B individual = carrier: the dog’s genetic make-up is heteroxygous. One allele is free from the unwanted mutation, and the one allele has it. In other words: the dog has one good and one bad allele. This dog is a carrier of the disorder, but it will never develop JLPP. This is where the recessive hereditary of the disease proves fortunate: only dogs with two mutant alleles can develop the disease. Dogs with only one “bad allele” are spared this outcome. In the context of a well-considered breeding program, gradually reducing the incidence of this gene constellation over generations is desirable. However, its presence is not of concern as long as an adequate number of homozygous unaffected dogs are available in the breeding pool.
The symptoms of Juvenile Laryngeal Paralysis and Polyneuropathy (JLPP) have become apparent in Rottweilers in recent years. I would like to begin with an outline of the symptoms that are characteristic for this disorder and its typical progression, at first explaining where the term itself comes from. Neuropathy is a word used to describe a severe disorder of the nervous system. The prefix “poly” indicates that neuropathies can affect many different parts of the body at the same time. In a healthy body, nerve structures control muscles and perform a range of complex additional functions. In its fully expressed form, polyneuropathy causes control over the muscles to be lost to an ever-greater degree, until it is ultimately lost entirely. Pronounced symptoms of paralysis of the larynx and the surrounding tissue comprise the second component of JLPP. The onset of the disease is typically marked by breathing problems in affected dogs, especially during physical exertion or when they are excited. Dogs may cough when eating or drinking, and the sound of their bark often changes. This is followed, somewhat later, by a loss of coordination in the hind limbs and subsequently also the forelimbs.
Type C individual = homozygous affected genotype: the dog’s genetic make-up is homozygous affected. Both alleles carry the unfavourable mutation. This dog, in other words, has two bad alleles This dog will develop JLPP. It is absolutely imperative that breeding programs ensure this gene constellation cannot arise. The importance and relevance of genetic information for breeders becomes evident when we look at what happens when individuals with different genetic characteristics are mated. We can begin our exploration of this by remembering that Type C individuals with homozygous affected alleles never enter the breeding pool because they die at a young age.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
These symptoms worsen until the dog is unable to move. The disorder typically appears either shortly after weaning age or in somewhat older juvenile dogs. The risk of misdiagnosis cannot always be eliminated. The disease causes immense distress to affected dogs.
It is inevitably terminal; no cure exists. We can consider ourselves lucky, that its appearance can be avoided with absolute certainty. This situation represents the best possible scenario for everybody seeking a Rottweiler puppy.
2. What is the Genetic basis for the condition? J u v e n i l e L a r y n g e a l Pa r a l y s i s a n d Polyneuropathy (JLPP) in Rottweilers is a hereditary disease. Its mode of inheritance is monogenic autosomal recessive. It is caused, in other words, by a mutation in a single genetic locus which is not located on the chromosomes deciding a dog’s sex (so not on the X or Y chromosomes). The concept of recessiveness relates to the natural laws which determine whether genes trigger disease. Symptoms or not, in order to understand how this works, we need to remember that every inherited trait we see in a dog that is controlled by a single gene goes back to two alleles. These are alternative forms of the same gene, one passed down from the dog’s father and one from its mother. In the illustrations (shown to the right), I will show how the genes behind monogenic autosomal recessive disorders are inherited and expressed. Many other modes of genetic inheritance following entirely different principles also exist, but need not be explored here; as the focus of this article is on JLPP, aspects of genetics not relevant to its transmission can be ignored here. The following genetic constellations can occur in any dog, regardless of its sex.

When two homozygous unaffected ("completely clear") animals are bred, the Situation is crystal clear: none of their offspring can develop JLPP. Each son and daughter will also be homozygous normal.
Pairing example 2:
homozygous unaffectedt Xt heterozygous Pairings between homozygous unaffected ("completely clear") animals and heterozygous 'carrier' animals also lead to offspring which are not susceptible to JLPP. If such pairings are frequently repeated, half of the offspring will typically be homozygous unaffected ("completely clear") and the other half will be heterozygous (carriers).
Pairing example 3: heterozygous X heterozygous
Mating two heterozygous animals (carriers) must be avoided at all costs. It can lead to offspring which develop JLPP. In large samples, it can be expected that 25 percent of the offspring resulting from such pairings will develop the disease, 50 percent will be carriers and 25 percent will be homozygous unaffected ("completely clear") dogs.

3. What will happen if this is ignored, and what action \ must Rottweiler breeders take now? Fortunately, a reliable DNA test has come onto the market. Discovering whether a dog’s genetic make-up is homozygous u n a f f e c t e d ( “c o m p l e t e l y c l e a r ” ) , heterozygous (a carrier) or homozygous affected is now relatively straightforward and inexpensive. This test has demonstrated that the gene responsible for the disorder is present in our Rottweiler population: it has been shown that carriers exist. We don’t know how many fatal cases of the disease have already occurred. Attempting to trace the problematic genetic heritage of dogs back to particular ancestors does not represent a fruitful approach to the issue: the best way forward lies in the adoption of genetic testing. At this point, let us imagine, for the sake of argument, a scenario in which very few Rottweilers were carriers.
If that were the case, some people might reject the option of testing on cost grounds, as well as for other reasons: measures to counteract a rare disease might strike them as disproportionate. In their innermost selves, they might also harbour deep-seated fears that they would no longer be able to breed from one of their most successful dogs without restrictions. A few people might handle the resultant stress by going into denial and refusing to engage with the issue or find out more about it. Knowing nothing about the disorder, they would then not need to factor it into their thinking. If you are in any way tempted to react in this way, please consider changing your attitude, even if you find this difficult, for the sake of the Rottweiler. Please wake up to the fact that responsible, ethically justifiable and legally compliant
dog breeding must necessarily rest on more solid foundations. The risk of the mutant gene slowly but steadily spreading throughout the population is unacceptably high. Over years, the number of carriers would rise higher and higher, and sooner or later the number of fatal cases of the disease would also rise drastically. We know all this. And we must draw the logical conclusions from what we have learned. From now on, or, more accurately, after an appropriate transition period, to allow time for the necessary tests to be carried out, every single breeder may only breed from dogs that have been identified as homozygous unaffected ("completely clear") or as carriers.

Continued from page 39 Carriers may only be bred with homozygous unaffected ("completely clear") animals. Flomozygous unaffected ("completely clear") dogs may be bred with both homozygous unaffected ("completely clear") dogs and with carriers. The procedure specified here ensures that NO more Rottweilers will develop JLPP. To be clear: I want to stress here that it would not be at all wise to breed only from homozygous normal ("clear") dogs and bitches. If that were to happen, genetic diversity would be severely reduced and it would be virtually impossible to stave off the negative consequences of inbreeding. The ADRK Board has, quite correctly, and, after consultation with the breeding Committee, now adopted a resolution to this effect. It will go on to produce a list of authorised genetic laboratories of assured quality.
Independently of any club regulations, the same duty to take action can also be derived from the German Protection of Animals Act, which each and every one of us is bound by. But let this be clear: our desire to breed healthy, sociable, energetic, and fun-loving Rottweilers that are true to type comes from the bottom of our hearts. It is not something we do only for the sake of complying with legislation. I perceive the same ethical duty to adopt precisely this approach in every country where Rottweilers are bred, be that Germany or any other nation. Diseases do not respect national borders. The suffering of animals does not stop at national borders. Friends of the Rottweiler across the world, on every continent and in every country are challenged to act on this issue.
Nothing and nobody can free any breeder from this duty. Whether the relevant local breeding regulations already contain provisions dealing with JLPP, matters not a jot in this regard. In conclusion, it may be noted that other dog breeds have already profited from the successful implementation of similar breeding programs. Several diseases with the same mode of inheritance have already been eliminated in this way: for example polyneuropathy in Greyhounds (a relatively similar form to the disease affecting Rottweilers) and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) in Sloughis. Co u nte r- m e a s u re s a g a i n s t J L P P i n Rottweilers are exceptionally likely to prove successful, not least because no other genetic tests are currently in routine use in their breeding.
How can I test my dog? Information provided by Schwarzbear Rottweilers The ADRK brought in compulsory testing of all breeding dogs to be tested, prior to mating, from the 1st November, 2016. Their pedigrees were endorsed with the result of such test and allowable breedings were Clear to Clear, Clear to Carrier only. This disease, with careful breeding, can be eradicated. Sergeant Alastair Le Lievre Royal Australian Engineers Written by George Hulse ergeant (SGT) Alastair Le Lievre works in the 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment at Enoggera as the Manager of the EDD Section. Two of his doggies came to the DQ ANZAC Day Dusk parade on 25th April 2017 and spoke to many DQ members after the Service. This is Sergeant Alistair Le Lievre’s story.
The Solomon Islands
In 1998, Alastair joined the Australian Regular Army and became a combat engineer. He became an EDD dog handler in 2003, but had some time up on operational duty before that.
Alastair graduated as a doggie in late 2003 and was teamed up with EDD AUSSIE. There is a photo of the two of them below. In early 2004, he and AUSSIE went to The Solomon Islands and supported cordon and search operations. They were often called in to search and clear sensitive areas such as buildings used for court hearings and VIP protection duties. They were particularly on the look-out for contraband such as weapons, ammunition, illegal substances and suspicious packages. In late May 2004, Alastair and AUSSIE came home to Australia.
East Timor
Afghanistan - First Time
In September 1999, Alastair deployed to East Timor with 18 Field Squadron (combat engineers) as a part of the International Force in East Timor. The combat engineers were employed on searching villages, houses, buildings and setting up vehicle search points, constructing major roads and an airfield, provision of command posts, hardening buildings, accommodation improvements and further development of existing field fortifications. This is a part of combat engineer support to a force overseas.
In September 2006, Alistair and AUSSIE deployed to Afghanistan. Alastair, at the rank of LCPL, was the second in command of the EDD Section in their base at Tarin Kowt (TK) in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan. During the first couple of weeks at TK, the teams received briefings, training and were familiarised with the tactical and intelligence pictures of the local area and acclimatised their dogs. TK is situated almost in the centre of a circular range of craggy peaked mountains which gives rise to the local term of the 'TK Bowl'. The bowl describes an area roughly 16 kilometres in diameter. Alistair’s team worked the bowl area to assure the civilian population that they were patrolling and protecting them and developing fortifications as a defence against Taliban actions.
On Operation ‘Gold’ In 2000, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) formed a part of the security capability for the Olympic Games in Sydney. Alastair was assigned to combat engineer search and surveillance duties at Sydney venues.

Continued from page 45 In April 2007, they rotated back to Australia. On arrival in Australia, Alastair took some leave while AUSSIE and the other EDD were sent to the AQIS quarantine station at Eastern Creek in NSW for their mandatory 30 day quarantine inspections. On completion of the AQIS inspections, the three EDD returned to work for further duty. Alastair was promoted to CPL in 2008 and was employed as a basic dog handler instructor. He also trained dogs during this time and attended his promotion to SGT course. In 2010, Alastair was promoted to SGT and became the Chief Trainer of the EDD Section at SME. In August 2010, Alastair was deployed again to Afghanistan.
Afghanistan - Second Time Alastair's second deployment to Afghanistan was not in the EDD stream. He went to Kandahar and worked as an advisor to the commanders on the Divisional HQ of the regional forces in Southern Afghanistan. On his return to Australia, Alistair became the Chief Trainer and Instructor of the EDD Section at the School of Military Engineering near Liverpool in NSW.

In 2011 Alastair had teamed up with a new dog named BRINGY. They deployed to Afghanistan in 2012. On their first operation, they made contact with a Taliban force and ground-attack aircraft were called in. An A4 ground attack aircraft of the United States Air Force came in low and let loose with it’s ground attack ordnance producing extreme noises. The noise un-nerved BINGY because he had never been exposed to such an intense noise before. BINGY was affected by that experience and was not a happy dog when he was put to work. Alastair was not prepared to take a risk on BINGY coming good anytime soon, so BINGY was returned to Australia. Alastair commanded the EDD Section at TK until July 2013, when he rotated his EDD team home to Australia. In 2017, Alistair deployed to Operation Fiji Assist in support of the cyclone devastation that occurred in those islands. SGT Le Lievre has been employed on operational duties seven times, including five hazardous search deployments in dangerous places. Alastair believes that senior ADF commanders have realised the potential of EDD teams in a high risk search environment. Commanders are aware of their EDD support capabilities and have ramped-up the use of dog teams in both peace and war. Photo credits: Supplied by George Hulse
