The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World

President’s Message for March 2017 Resignation of Bob Dorr It is with great regret, that I announce to the membership the resignation of our long term Grounds Manager, Mr Bob Dorr. I think it’s fair to say that every member would know Bob, and would be well aware of the massive contributions he has made to Dogs Queensland during his many years of service in two different spells. The grounds at Durack would not be the pride of our organisation, without this man and his years of dedicated and unwavering service. Bob will be finishing his employment with Dogs Queensland on 19th of April 2017. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Board, the staff and the members of Dogs Queensland to thank Bob for his loyal service and commitment to Dogs Queensland, and wish him, Kaye and the whole family all the best in their future endeavors. 2017 AGM March means AGM time, there is an updated AGM Notice in this Magazine and on our website. The AGM will take place in the Durack Clubhouse, Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds, 247 King Avenue, Durack at 7:30pm on Wednesday 29th March 2017. With the holding of the AGM sees the last act of current sitting Directors Lionel Blumel and Sandra Mundt. Things have certainly changed since they were first on the Council as it was then. Lionel was appointed to the CCC(Q) Council in 1989 and Sandra in 1992, a combined total of 53 years. Your wise counsel will be greatly missed and you have certainly left an indelible mark on the Dog World that will never be forgotten. All I can say is thank you. Relocation of the Dogs Queensland Office Work is continuing on the relocation of the office from Fortitude Valley to Durack. Over the next few months, there will be some disruptions to the use of the Durack building and meeting rooms, while the refit gets underway. Members will be issued with updates regarding the refits, and where necessary, Clubs will be designated with alternative meetings rooms during this period. Animal Management (Protecting Puppies) And Other Legislation Amendment Act 2016 (Act) Dogs Queensland has made its official application to the Queensland State Government to become an ‘approved entity’. At the moment, this application is currently being assessed by Biosecurity, and members will be advised once we have received any confirmation from the State Government. Dogs Queensland are still in negotiations with the State Government to secure a meeting with the RSPCA’s national body and the Minister for Agricultures office. It is our aim to have an appropriate memorandum of understanding between Dogs Queensland and the RSPCA, so that our members can be assured that their details will be protected and that they will not be the target of random inspections, simply because they breed purebred dogs. Minister Byrne was understanding of our concerns in relation to this matter, given the very negative position the RSPCA’s national body has taken on purebred dogs, and their breeders.

Club Life Membership Award The Queensland Dog World

Dom Colasimone Club Life Membership Award Wide Bay Working Gundog Club Inc om Colasimone, a member of the Wide Bay Working Gundog Club since not long after its inception in 1978, was awarded life membership at the Club’s recent AGM. He is one of only four life members of this Club, keeping company with Merrilyn Walsh, John Palu and Jim Hook. Dom has been, and continues to be much more than a mere Club member. He has been on the executive. He has been Trial Manager, Stewarded at Trials and has helped with the ‘behind the scenes’ work needed to keep a Club operating efficiently, such as finding properties on which to train and trial, fixing throwers, taking care of game, loading shot and planning and co-ordinating training days. Dom has worked to improve equipment and has designed and made automatic throwers for the Club and its members. Most importantly, he willingly shares his knowledge and expertise with warmth and kindness, particularly with beginner handlers and their dogs. Dom is a highly respected Championship Judge and in 2016, co-judged the QLD State Championship with Alan Donovan. As a Judge, he looks for a handler and dog working as a team at the highest level. He has handled a number of super-efficient hunting dogs, (all German Shorthaired Pointers) for his own use. These same hunting dogs were converted into high quality competition dogs. Three were both Field Trial and Retrieving Trial Champions, a training feat believed to be unequalled in Utility dogs in Australia. His two most recent dogs have gained their Retrieving Champion Titles with his latest champion being RTCH Jagacey Vyper who Titled at 16 months. Dom and Vyper will be a team to watch in the future. Some highlights of his dogs’ performances over the years are: • Multiple wins in Retrieving Trials and Field Trials • Multiple winner of the Wide Bay Cup • Placings in State Championships, both in Field and Retrieving Trials • 2nd in the Australian National Utility Field Trial Championship Dom most definitely is very much deserving of being acknowledged by our Club for all that he has done for the benefit of our members and for gundog sports and gundog enthusiasts in general.

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

The 'AHT'

American Hairless Terrier By Lynn K. Poston, AHTCA Secretary he American Hairless Terrier is more commonly referred to as the ‘AHT’. This is truly an American breed, that originated in Louisiana as a natural mutation of the Rat Terrier. Historically, the AHT began in the early 1970's, when a hairless puppy was born into a litter of mid-size Rat Terriers.

The hairless AHT has only hairless genes.

While not the first hairless puppy born to these parents, it was the first to be given to Edwin and Willie Scott and the Scotts immediately fell in love with this female puppy and named her Josephine. Josephine became the progenitor of the American Hairless Terrier breed.

Thus giving the hairless variety of those breeds patterned hair on the head, feet and tail. The coated variety of these other hairless breeds carry no hairless gene and therefore, they can only produce coated offspring if bred together. Because the AHT genetics are different, the hairless AHT is born with a soft down that is referred to as a ‘birth coat’, which they lose by the time they are 8 to 12 weeks of age.

Like all the other hairless dog breeds, the AHT comes in two varieties (hairless & coated) but that is where the similarity ends. The AHT is uniquely different than all the other hairless breeds in several ways. Most importantly, the genetics of the AHT is a simple recessive. This means that the coated AHT carries a hairless gene and can produce both hairless and coated offspring.

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

All the other hairless breeds are genetically a dominant lethal. This means that the hairless variety of all these other hairless breeds need to have one gene for coat and one hairless gene.

Making the feel of the AHT skin very different and not as prone to the skin issues seen with the other hairless breeds. The hairless AHT also lacks the dentition issues seen with the other hairless breeds. The AHTs have normal shaped and well-rooted teeth.

The hairless and coated AHT come in a variety of colours and patterns, including solid coloured. The AHT was accepted into AKC ’s Foundation Stock Service (FSS) in October 2011 and the original submission to AKC was over 1,200 pedigrees. On January 1, 2016, the AKC granted the American Hairless Terrier full breed recognition and moved them into the Terrier Group. According to the parent club’s records, by the end of January, 10 AHTs achieved their AKC Championship and 2 achieved their AKC Grand Championships! In a nutshell, the AHT is a smoothly muscled, small to medium size companion who attracts attention and fans wherever they go. The breed is alert, curious, intelligent and easy to train. Because the hairless variety of the AHT lacks the protection of a coat, it makes them unsuited for field hunting.

March 2017 - 25

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

Continued from page 25 While the AHT was not really developed to be a ‘working’ terrier, the instincts are there and many AHTs (both varieties) excel in Obedience and a variety of performance events. In the Conformation ring, the AHT should NOT be sparred and is a tabled breed.

Consultations for all species including house calls and farm visits

A few important points to remember when judging: The AHT has no relationship to the Chinese Crested or Xoloitzcuintli. The AHT is uniquely and genetically different than all the other hairless breeds.

In a nutshell, the AHT is a smoothly muscled, small to medium size companion who attracts attention and fans wherever they go. The breed is alert, curious, intelligent and easy to train. There is a coated variety of the AHT. The coat should be short, smooth and dense, with a sheen. A blue or blue fawn dog is permitted to have blue or amber eyes. A chocolate dog will also have lighter eyes. These are self-coloured with matching nose leather. Neither are to be faulted. However, other colour AHTs should have a dark brown eye. Both varieties of the AHT come in a variety of colours and patterns, including solid coloured. But Merle and Albinism are to be DQ’d. The AHT is ideally 12” to 16” at the shoulder and the body is rectangular, being slightly longer than tall. Movement is smooth and effortless, showing good reach and drive. American Hairless Terriers in Australia By Kay Holmes The American Hairless Terrier was officially recognised as a Registerable Pure Breed by ANKC in Australia on the 17th January 2017 and will be eligible for exhibition in Group 2 (Terriers) from 1st July 2017. Australia’s first AHT was approved for re-registration from her AKC Papers on the 19th January 2017, we have high hopes for this wonderful breed in Australia in the coming years.

AKC was originally going to put AHTs in the Non-Sporting group – not the Terrier group as the breed was developed to be a companion and NOT a working terrier. The AHT loves hunting, although it is not recommended for the hairless variety, due to the lack of protection on their skin. Some are not good swimmers, so need to be closely supervised especially around pools, preferably with a doggy life jacket securely on. The AHT is very eager to please and is therefore relatively easy to train and responds well to positive reinforcement based training. Nevertheless, don’t bequeath your AHT with small dog syndrome. Be the pack leader in order to curb any negative behaviour.

Temperament

Exercise and Living Conditions

American Hairless Terriers are alert, intelligent, playful, inquisitive, lively and loving dogs. This affectionate dog makes an excellent indoor companion in the right home.

The AHT is strictly an indoor dog, not a yard dog. AHTs are equally comfortable on both an acreage block and in an apartment. They are fairly active indoors and love challenging games and toys.

They are good with children, especially if raised with them from puppyhood, but being a small dog, can be easily injured by an overly enthusiastic child, so adult supervision is a must, as with any puppy.

They should either have a small to medium sized yard to play in for 20 - 30 minutes of exercise per day or be taken for a walk for this amount of time each day. This breed excels at Agility, Trials and Obedience.

The AHT is lively yet loving, they need a human who understands how to be the leader it is best to teach your children how to be gentle leaders early. Most AHT’s respond well to treat or clicker based training.

The American Hairless Terrier is a very good prospect for some allergy suffers.

AHT breeders here and overseas have had experience doing hands on and remote allergy tests with people who have an allergic response to dogs and often these people have been previously tested and are unable to own a dog, even with other breeds that are reported as ‘hypoallergenic’.

Studies have shown that the AHT can be the best opportunity to own a dog for many dog allergy suffers, with breeders reporting seeing grown men cry when they come to pick up the first puppy that they have ever owned. Studies have shown that the AHT can be the best opportunity to own a dog for many dog allergy suffers, with breeders reporting seeing grown men cry when they come to pick up the first puppy that they have ever owned. Holding a puppy with no reaction is a very powerful feeling and being able to provide that is an honour to the guardians of this wonderful breed.

Most AHT’s are generally good watchdogs, yet is friendly and not generally fearful with strangers. The AHT is a Terrier-they are quick and very playful and have the lively, feisty and fearless quality found in most terriers. In saying this, AHT breeders have worked through the years to ‘tone down’ the terrier temperament! The AHT are terrier-smart without being terrier crazy and do have an ‘off switch.

General and Skin care for AHTs By Danielle Gal and Kay Holmes The most important lesson: less is more! The AHT is different to other hairless breeds and don’t have any of the breeding complications usually associated with other hairless breeds. They do not have hair anywhere on their body, many may retain a Vellus, the hairless variety obviously does not shed fur and doesn’t get fleas. Their dentition is well-rooted and strong and they also do not have major skin problems commonly seen with other hairless dogs.

ANKC/CHEDS & PennHIP scoring

Never use scented products or products with lanolin/wool in them, as these may create skin issues in sensitive dogs. Their skin feels like silk! Nothing will prepare you for the sheer softness and pliability of their skin without needing potions to make it that way. Unscented lotion/cream/coconut oil should only be applied when you see dry skin. This may be once or twice a year, mostly on ear tips and girth areas. Frequent bathing can necessitate more lotion being needed, but again, less is more.

March 2017 - 31

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

Continued from page 31 Only apply if you see that their skin looks dry. There is a difference between skin that has been protected from UV and dogs that haven't (usually solid coloured dogs). Without having felt a dog whose skin has been cared for, one could be mistaken in thinking that an unprotected dog has lovely skin, as compared to the other hairless breeds, it does! However, once one has felt an AHT that has been cared for all its life, the comparison is rather obvious. I find this to be the case regardless of colour/pied vs solid and strongly feel that owning solid dogs specifically so that one doesn't have to protect their skin from UV is far from the truth and very dangerous with the powerful sun here in Australia. Sunburn hurts and it only takes one bad burn to ruin their skin forever.

It may not show up immediately, but will eventually. It's not that complicated to protect them from the sun and is their only true skin care requirement! You wouldn't let your child out without clothes for an hour or two in this killer sun without protection and the amount of time it takes to put on a UV onesie or apply sunscreen is negligible. AHT can get clogged pores and develop pimples if they get dirty and the skin isn’t cared for – this is more commonly the case in puppies or an older dog, but they generally go away on their own with normal Skin care. Rashes and other allergies can occur, but are not that common.

The Cold AHTs are like having kids - if you're cold they will likely be too and need a coat. There are some great clothes makers in Australia, but don’t use wool or wool products; Polar

Fleece for warmth should be fine. They love to sleep under the doona, but if your dog doesn't sleep in your bed, you need to ensure that he/she has warm enough clothes in winter to not be uncomfortable overnight. On the other hand, don’t overdress your dog - they handle cold better than heat. Wash bedding and Clothes in Hypoallergenic products to prevent/minimise any contact reactions from your soap powders in sensitive individuals. The coated AHT is covered with a short smooth and dense coat that has a sheen. Trim nails once a month but more often if necessary. Keep ears clean and ask your vet to check for grass seeds during any regular checkups as they don’t always show symptoms.

A little from the AHT Ambassadors in Australia as there are only a few of us to date, I thought it would be reasonable to put in a little paragraph from each person involved in founding this breed in Australia to give you different perspectives from each person, as we all come from a different demographic.

Kay Holmes: Although my first AHT will join our family a little later this year, I believe I have played an integral part of this breed being accepted into Australia. From doing the 'Breed Application', finding an AHT in Australia and applying for the 'Breed Recognition', to offering to write this editorial.

Not so long after my discovery, I got talking to a lovely lady at a dog show (Jane) and I don’t know how it came up, but it turned out that she had an American Hairless Terrier at home. Jane was more than happy for us to come and meet her AHT and we were ecstatic when my son did not react. The rest from there is history and we are now anxiously awaiting the arrival of our AHT girl later this year. I would personally like to thank Lynn K. Poston and Terri Murphy for all the tireless work they have done for this breed over the last 30 odd years and all the help they have given me personally along our Journey so far. I would also like to thank Patty Smith for allowing us the opportunity to own an AHT and we will endeavour to do you all and the Breed proud.

I happened across the AHT breed as my eldest son (of 3 children) is allergic to dogs, ponies etc. Although he is dog mad, unfortunately he has allergic reactions to them. We introduced him to all the 'Hypoallergenic' breeds and other hairless breeds in a controlled environment. He reacted to each one and each time our hearts sank with the realisation that we may never be able to have an inside dog again. So, off to the Internet I went, in search of a breed for my dogloving son and I came across the American Hairless Terrier!

Jane Ridley: I first saw an AHT online 17 years ago and it was love at first sight. 15 years later my dream of owning one came true with the arrival of my UKC Champion titled girl from the United States. She is a very soft kind girl who is very easy to live with; she is the easiest care dog imaginable. AHTs love their food-I feed raw and find this takes care of their skin and overall wellbeing. Their nails seem to grow very quickly, but a quick file each fortnight takes care of this easily. AHTs love their clothes in the cooler months... my girl has a closet just as large as mine! My girl was officially re-registered from her UKC papers in Australia on the 19th January 2017. I am importing semen soon and have an exciting litter planned for this year. My aim is to breed healthy, solid coloured dogs with good temperaments that will make life long family members, particularly for people with allergies that have not been able to have a pet before, as American Hairless Terriers are one of the most 'hypoallergenic' dogs.

Danielle Gal: I first got involved with the American Hairless Terrier in 2009, when I had Chinese Crested, but didn’t feel that they were my heart breed. I grew up with Staffordshire Bull Terriers and loved their bold, happy, people-orientated attitude. I loved the idea of that same personality without the constant little hairs I was always picking off everything and the smaller size package that I could easily pick up if I encountered trouble with a less than friendly dog off leash. Having to try to pick up a squirming Stafford or keep it apart and fend off the aggressor while on beach walks was one of my biggest worries, but my dogs loved their walks and swims, so I couldn’t deny them those pleasures.

34 - March 2017

A lapdog that could actually fit on my lap and not just think it did, was also a motivation! While living overseas in 2010, I got my first AHT from Wales, with many thanks to Teri Murphy who helped make this happen and my life was never the same again. My girl has travelled the world with me, handled temperatures from -5C to 45C with her fantastic can-do attitude, hiked up mountains and across deserts and just laid in bed with me on days I didn’t want to get up. She’s lived on dairy farms and in apartments and run next to my bicycle on my way to work on the shores of Lake Kinneret.

We lived in an area being bombed at one stage and I was truly grateful that at 7kg, I could scoop her up and make it to the bomb shelter just in time, because I would never have left her. Problems on beach walks were a thing of the past! She has never met a stranger, is friends with all creatures great and small and a total hit with all the neighbourhood kids she’s met-in more than one language. She plays fetch with them, does tricks for them (even after they’ve asked for the 50th time) and is always the perfect lady and my best friend. Before she appears too perfect, I’ll admit her weakness for newspaper left lying around! Meeting and interacting with people who have allergies is where the true worth of her breed comes to the fore. There will always be people unable to tolerate even an AHT, but we have found that of all the less allergenic breeds, more people appear to be able to tolerate them. People who have never been able to have or even pat a dog, can happily interact with her and I believe that she has changed lives and converted many people who may have been put off when first seeing a hairless dog. I look after her the way I do myself. If I’m cold, we both wear a coat; if the sun is out and I need to put sunscreen on, she gets a quick spray with kiddies sunscreen and we’re off! When I moved to Australia, there was never a question of whether she would come or not. If she couldn’t, I wouldn’t either! So in 2013, my girl came to Australia and the rest is history! I saw that there were no other AHTs here and having promised myself that I would always have an AHT in my life, I set about planning how to do that and in 2015, brought a dog and bitch from Germany. I have high hopes for my breed here and most importantly my life is better just living with them! Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World

Zone 2

The shows will also have a social aspect, with some competitions and events for exhibitors to celebrate Easter.

Dog World Column, March 2017

Please check out the Bundaberg Canine Club Inc Facebook page, where the Club has included all the information that members could possibly want about the weekend and continue to update this as the event draws closer.

arch sees an increase in activities in Zone 2 and throughout the Dog World in Queensland as a whole. Our Conformation Show season and activities for all disciplines are almost back into full rotation, so there is plenty to keep those members who are rested up after the break fully engaged.

It is pleasing that this weekend has the added bonus of being undercover to enhance the comfort and atmosphere for exhibitors and spectators.

Upcoming Shows and Events In the month of March, members have the following events and activities to look forward to: • • • •

Conformation Championship and Open Shows at Gympie, Mackay and Gladstone; Agricultural Championship Show at Proston, and Murgon; Obedience Events at Gladstone, Rockhampton, and Mackay; and Retrieving Trials at Bundaberg.

Get those entries in and let’s all help to make this event massive!

Rules in Action – looking after ourselves, our dogs and each other After attending a recent Show, the Rules in relation to controlling dogs entered into discussion. Not because there was an incident, but because a possible risk was identified where an exhibitor was not aware of the Rules. This is in no way a reflection on the exhibitor because the current version of the Dogs Queensland Rules are lengthy, so it is an unrealistic expectation for people to know and remember them all.

Please check out the schedules on the Dogs Queensland website or in your copy of the Dog World magazine or online to look at future events in your area.

The conditions of entry are outlined in the Rules, which state:

Date Claimer – Bundaberg Easter Eggstravaganza (April 14th – 17th)

b.

This is probably your last, last, last chance to get your entries in for the Bundaberg Easter Eggstravaganza being held over the Easter Weekend. It will be a massive weekend of four Championship and two Open Shows with a full international panel for the Championship Shows and a talented panel of our trainee Judges for the Open Shows. But wait – it gets better – the shows are being held undercover at the Bundaberg Recreational Precinct which has amazing camping facilities at a very reasonable price. Bringing an event like this to regional Queensland doesn’t come without it’s costs and risks, so it is really important that members who have been calling out for these type of events in regional areas, throw their support behind the Bundaberg Club who have worked extremely hard to make this a possibility.

Identification includes but is not limited to the registered or call name of the exhibit. ensure that no exhibitor or handler shall wear or carry any form of identification, other than the approved exhibit number, which identifies an exhibit, exhibitor, breeder, kennel, official or other dogs apart from the exhibit. ensure that Soft Crates are not utilised within the assembly area at any Show.”

Many of these conditions are aimed at reducing risks or as a result of incidents which required the circumstances that brought them about to be addressed by the Rules, and the overriding intention of them is to ensure the well-being and reduction of possible injury (physical or otherwise). Were you aware of all of these? It is what we sign up to when we enter a Show and the section of the Rules is involved with liability, so there is an important legal aspect and implication to our adherence of these rules. If a Steward, Show Manager or Club Member does ask you to take some action, it may well be that it is for the protection of yourself and others and to mitigate potential risks that could result in loss or injury. Most are quite willing to discuss the situation and provide information but as members, it is also good to educate ourselves.

hil calls Sandgate near Brisbane, in Queensland his home town. He grew up there and at the age of seventeen years, he joined the Australian Regular Army in 1952. Phil went through his recruit training at Enoggera and on graduation was posted to the 2nd Battalion of The Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR) at Puckapunyal in Victoria.

Feature Story The Queensland Dog World

Overseas Service in the Malayan Emergency 2RAR was stationed at Enoggera in 1955, just as the Malayan Emergency (1955-60) became a hot issue. The unit was battle ready and arrived in Malaya in October 1955. This was a two year posting. The enemy were the Communist Terrorists, or CT for short, who were terrorising villages and native people in the jungle. Phil became interested in becoming a dog handler after a group of dog handlers from the Royal Australian Engineers (RAE) asked for infantry volunteers to come forward and be trained in dog handling. The dogs were an “engineer store”, and as such, came under the control of RAE. The person in charge of the dogs was Corporal George Gray and it was his responsibility to train and team up the dogs with their handlers. The headquarters of the dog training in Malaya was at the Jungle Training Centre at Kota Tinggi in the south of Malaya. George Gray had experience in Korea with mine detecting dogs. George conducted interviews with prospective dog handlers from 2RAR and he selected Phil and Phil’s mate, Cecil “Honk” Crooks. Both went to the British Army’s 2nd Royal Army Veterinary Corps Dog Wing at Kota Tinggi for training where Phil was teamed-up with a German Shepherd named “GEORGE”. But, GEORGE was very gunshy and would even bark at thunder. There was a moment when Australian humour overtook this problem. Phil and GEORGE were travelling on a train when it stopped for a short while at a station. In Phil’s words: “GEORGE and I had just gotten out of the guards van and I tied him up to a sapling in a tub on the platform. Just then, a big clap of thunder startled GEORGE and he took off down the platform pulling the sapling with him. He barged through all the people on the platform and straight into the Station Master’s office where he hid under a large desk. I was under the desk trying to coax GEORGE out when I felt a tap on my boot. I looked up and saw a British Army Colour Sergeant looking at me. He said ‘Are you one of those Horsetralians?’ I said ‘Yeah, and I am trying to get my Horse out from under this desk!”. GEORGE was unsuitable for infantry operations and so Phil was teamed-up with “LAWDER”. LAWDER was a patrol dog and worked off-leash in front of an infantry patrol. There was a combination of off-leash infantry patrol dogs and onleash tracker dogs. It worked something like this: the infantry patrol dog worked to the front of the patrol and on indicating something of interest, another dog team, the tracker dog and handler, would go in and conduct a more thorough search of the area or item of interest.

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

Phil’s mate ”Honk” Crooks had a tracker dog named “TEX”, so they teamed up as patrol and tracker dog teams.

LAWDER was a patrol dog and worked off-leash in front of an infantry patrol. There was a combination of off-leash infantry patrol dogs and on-leash tracker dog. When Phil and Honk returned to 2RAR they were employed on numerous patrols and were instrumental in detecting the location of camps, hides, caches and follow-ups on CT movement through the jungle. LAWDER and TEX were very successful and were a popular among the diggers. The biggest contact with the CT in which Phil, LAWDER, Honk and TEX were involved occurred early one morning when Phil and Honk were exercising their dogs.

Continued from page 39 In Phil’s words: “ Honk and I were exercising our dogs just after dawn along this road when we heard an enormous amount of small arms fire coming from a big contact about a mile ahead of us. We turned around and headed back to our base and were met by a scout car which took us back to camp quickly. Our gear was always packed ready for immediate deployment into the jungle and we were off to support the unit which was heavily engaged with the enemy. Apparently, a rubber plantation owner went into the bush and was ambushed by the CT. He and his Malay Police Field Force security guards were killed and a truck which carried raw latex rubber was hit and set on fire. B Coy went in hot pursuit of the CT using us and a Sarawak Ranger (a native Dyak or Iban visual tracker from Borneo). An Army aerial spotter in an Auster aircraft flew overhead and indicated where the CT were crossing a river up ahead, but because there was no communications between our radios, the pilot had to undertake some ingenious manoeuvres to alert us as to his information. The follow up intensified and we went into tracking mode. Last light overtook our patrol and we set up a night harbour. Just on dusk a CT water carrier walked straight into our position and was wounded in the hand. The CT soldier took off into the bush, but a couple of days later we tracked him down, and by then, gangrene had set into his wound and he was in a bad way. We treated him and sent him to a field hospital. However, the noise of the contact alerted the CT patrol and they managed to escape out of our patrol area”. But there was a strange sequel to this event. Phil continues: “During the contact with the CT water carrier, Honk grabbed for his rifle and dropped the pilot line attached to TEX. TEX took off after the CT and began to track him down without Honk behind him. TEX disappeared into the jungle. With night upon the patrol, Honk could not follow up and TEX did not come back. At the completion of our mission, the patrol returned to our base without TEX. As the days passed, hope for TEX’s recovery faded. Then after seven days, TEX ran into our base and was reunited with us. We were delighted and so relieved. TEX looked like he had been in a war zone all right. He had wild animal bite wounds, open cuts, abrasions, bruises, very lacerated pads, a number of large leeches on him and his ribs were sticking out of his rib cage from hunger. He was a mess. But he was alive, he survived the ordeal and went on working as a tracker dog”. Clearly, this dog loved his boss and loved being a tracker dog. Phil had a need to take LAWDER to the British Army vets in Johore and while he was there a British officer asked Phil to work LAWDER, for about six weeks, in support of the Ghurkha

40 - March 2017

Rifles (British Army soldiers from Nepal in the Himalayas). 2RAR granted permission and Phil and LAWDER were off to work with the Ghurkhas in the jungle. During this time, LAWDER made a magnificent “point”. He indicated accurately the presence of a CT patrol which was over 1.5 kilometres away. The Ghurkhas were so impressed with this outcome that Phil ended up with a Ghurkha off-sider to look after him. After this, Phil and LAWDER were a popular item to be called out in support of the Police and other law enforcement agencies. LAWDER indicated on many caches, stores dumps and camps used by the CT. The one drawback was that the Malay Police Field Force (MPFF) was mainly of the Muslim religion. Islam does not look favourably on any person who lives with animals and gets licked by a dog. Phil had a food dixie for himself and another for his dog, and of course he slept with his dog. He was therefore considered “unclean”. The MPFF officers did not have the same problem as their constables because most of the officers were British. Unfortunately for Phil, when the guys went on short leave into the local towns, the MPFF constables would tell the bar girls that Phil was licked by dogs and the girls would have nothing to do with Phil as a result. Phil, with the permission of his British officer decided to get them back for this. There was an MPFF person who continually slowed down patrols when engaged on physically hard carrying duties from “jeep heads” back to their base. So Phil put LAWDER behind this guy in the hope of expediting his carrying attitude, with the added incentive of getting back into their vehicles at the jeep head before the imminent torrential rain of the monsoon season would drench them. It worked. The MPFF person was in a rolling sweat by the time they reached the jeep head. He wanted nothing to do with the dog. LAWDER went for a quick swim in the nearby river to cool off. And that’s when it all came undone. LAWDER jumped into one of the troop carrying vehicles loaded with constables, ran down the middle of them and then shook the river water off himself. The water hit the MPFF people whereupon they all hurled themselves off the truck and ran down to the river to wash off the “dog water”. And then it bucketed down with rain. Everybody got soaked. But Phil chuckled to himself that his dog could be used for more than just patrolling and tracking. In 1957, Phil was posted back to Australia and had to hand LAWDER back to the engineers at Kota Tinggi. It was an emotional farewell given that LAWDER had been such a useful combat multiplier to Australian and the other forces in the jungle. When Phil went back to Malaya with 1RAR from 1959 to 1961 as a digger in the Anti-tank Platoon, he searched high and low for LAWDER but was unable to find him.

Phil discharged from the Army in 1970 and worked in government and security companies until he retired. On 5 March 2009, the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment (2CER) at Enoggera formed up his unit for his explosive detecting dogs to receive their medals from the Australian Defence Force Trackers and War Dogs Association. Once all the engineer dogs received their medals, it was time to issue LAWDER’s medals to Phil.

He received the Canine Service Medal and the War Dog Operational Medal in recognition of the great work contributed by his dog, LAWDER. It had taken 42 years to come, but at long last, LAWDER’s work had been recognised in a manner befitting that of a good soldier.

Phil being a ”mature” aged veteran was sitting near the parade ground waiting for his turn to receive LAWDER’s medals. When his name was called - ”Private Daniel!” - He jumped to his feet and answered with a soldier like “Sir”, marched smartly to the head of the parade ground and stood at attention out front. He received the Canine Service Medal and the War Dog Operational Medal in recognition of the great work contributed by his dog, LAWDER. It had taken 42 years to come, but at long last, LAWDER’s work had been recognised in a manner befitting that of a good soldier. There was a tear in Phil’s eyes. Fast forward to Christmas 2016. I spoke to Phil by telephone to wish him all the best for the season. Phil is well into his eighties and is not travelling well with a variety of medical conditions. He reminded me of a conversation I had with him some years ago when I said to him: ” Humans have a number of Gods to worship, but a dog only has one - YOU!”. In our conversation he kept on recalling the feats that LAWDER had achieved. He finally said to me: ”LAWDER - now there was a fantastic dog!”. After sixty years, Phil still remembers his dog with almost palpable affection. That’s the power of love. Photo credits: Supplied by George Hulse

Thank you Queensland The McGreevy family would like to thank the wonderful exhibitors of Queensland for their help, support, good Sportsmanship and encouragement. It just goes to show, the true aims of the Dogs fancy are still alive and well in some places and hearts. “That is the love of and desire to maintain and keep viable the pure bred dog” (and to enjoy the comradery of and gain knowledge from like minded people).

Our Interstate Judges

Ms Judith Docksey Judith started judging at Championship level in 2005. She is a strongly competitive exhibitor and a keen, enthusiastic judge. She passionately enjoys breeding, raising and exhibiting Shelties under the Beauideal prefix. She has judged in most states of Australia, and has also judged in NZ, Finland, Japan and South Africa. It is with great pleasure that she has been able to accept this appointment and she is really looking forward to it. Mr Wayne Douglas Wayne first became involved in showing dogs in 1977 with an English Cocker Spaniel. In 1979 he moved in to the Hound Group with his first Afghan Hound. In 1983, the first of several English Springer Spaniels arrived, continuing his involvement with the Gundog group. In 1984 the first exhibition greyhound arrived and was soon followed by two imports from the UK. In the early 90s American Cockers and a Whippet were added to his breeds. A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel joined the team late in 2004. In 2007, he imported an English Springer Spaniel from the UK.
