The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for May 2017 Firstly, I would like to thank all the members of the dog world for their congratulations on my return to the position of the President of Dogs Queensland. Representing Dogs Queensland in this role is, has been, and will continue to be an absolute honour for me. Congratulations also to our newly appointed Vice Presidents, Mrs Norma Zimmerle and Mrs Barbara Murfet. The currently elected Board contains a broad diversity of people, knowledge and skills, which will be of great benefit in continuing to take Dogs Queensland into the future. As a Board, we will all work together and be united in the goals of Dogs Queensland. We will achieve even greater results than we have already accomplished over the last two years, and finalise a number of key projects commenced by the previous Board. There are a number of issues the Board will be addressing over the coming year and these include: • Relocation of the Dogs Queensland office from Fortitude Valley to Durack; • Implementation of the service delivery review, and restructuring of the Dogs Queensland office; • Further consultation and proposed planning of the undercover ring area at Durack; • Improvements to the use of technology in metropolitan and regional areas of Queensland; Shortly we will be calling for ‘expressions of interest’ in the various Dogs Queensland Committees. I hope that members will come forward and put their hands up to take part in these various Committees. We would value the input and assistance of our members to ensure that our Committees continue to work in the most constructive way possible and provide vital assistance to the Board and our organisation as a whole. In closing, I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to the outgoing Board. Their efforts have seen a wide variety of changes implemented, major projects started, and have boosted the public profile of Dogs Queensland. Shane Thomas President

IN LOVING MEMORY
Joan Roseworn From Krisi Murphy, President, Dalmatian Association of Queensland e were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Life Member, Club Patron and Founding Member, Joan Roseworn. Joan was amongst the very first people to form our Association and has held various Committee positions over the years. In 2016, she held the position of Vice President and Club Patron and now in 2017 we continue to honour Joan with the position of Club Patron and have agreed to name our upcoming DAQ Specialty Shows - 'The Joan Roseworn Memorial Shows'. Joan held the prefix 'MessaSpot' and campaigned quite a few Dally's to Champion status. She was active in the show ring from the early 70s and retired herself from handling in the mid80s. She was known for having a preference for Liver spots and one of her proudest moments was when MessaSpot San Cristobel was awarded Best Liver Colour at a Dalmatian National. Joan loved talking about 'The old days' of DAQ when there was around 100 members and all were actively competing in dog sports both here in Queensland and interstate. She often mentioned how after local Shows, herself and husband Kerry would invite everyone back to their place and they would end up having a yard full of children and Dalmatians, with everyone getting along with each other. Joan had a real sense of community amongst Association members and was very aware of our regional members. On a number of occasions, she ‘rallied the troops’ so to speak and arranged road trips to regional Shows so that our regional members would have an opportunity to interact with ‘The City Folk’. Joan was the epitome of the term ‘Competitor’. She was fierce in the Show ring, determined to handle her Dally to a win. She was humble when she won and gracious when she lost. The third trait being the most important, as regardless of who had beaten her, she never let that cause ill-feelings towards fellow competitors. She respected others opinions and always showed fantastic sportsmanship. Up until very recently, Joan was still an active member of our Association even though she wasn’t able to be physically in the meeting room, she was briefed by myself after meetings and was given minutes to read through. Personally, Joan is someone that I have admired for a very long time. Her graciousness and sportsmanship is what I like to model my own behaviour on. I will dearly miss our chats and her friendship. The Dalmatian Fancy have lost a wonderful supporter but our memories of her will live forever. Rest in Peace Sweet Lady.

Historical Surprise Written by Margaret Davis
I am indebted to the wonderful invention of digital imaging which allows old and rare 19th century publications to be searched online and to those libraries around the world which give access to their valuable collections.
or over 100 years it has been believed that the first Borzoi in Australia were the Russian imports Orloff and Katrina who were a personal gift from the Czar to Dr Charles Ryan in Melbourne in 1898. However there has been an exciting discovery that there were two imports more than 20 years earlier and they were in Queensland! In March 1876, the Honorable Harold Finch Hatton arrived from England to visit his older brother Henry who for some years had owned a very large cattle property named 'Mount Spencer' not far west of Mackay. The Hon Harold spent 8 years in Australia and eventually wrote a detailed account of his travels in his book 'Advance Australia' published in 1885. In this book, Harold mentions the two Russian Wolfhounds which were living on his brother’s property when he arrived in 1876. Such an early date is significant in Borzoi history. There were very few specimens in England at the time, mainly Russian imports which had been gifts from the Czar to various members of English aristocracy including the Prince of Wales. The Prince bred a few litters from his Molodets and Outechka between 1868 and 1873. The two dogs near Mackay in 1876 may well have been from these famous Russian imports. The Finch Hatton brothers were sons of George Finch Hatton the 10th Earl of Winchilsea who was listed as a guest at various functions held at Buckingham Palace and Sandringham of the time. The north Queensland town is named after Henry Finch Hatton who later inherited his father’s title and became the 13th Earl of Winchilsea. Henry and his relative Mr L K Rice in partnership imported a variety of livestock, poultry, birds etc over several years to establish a very successful stud property in the early days of Queensland settlement. I am indebted to the wonderful invention of digital imaging which allows old and rare 19th century publications to be searched online and to those libraries around the world which give access to their valuable collections.

The Russian Borzoi Russia’s famous and distinctive hunting dog existed for centuries amongst the elite and has gathered an aura of romance along with its history. Written by Margaret Davis riginally bred to catch any game that could be chased at speed across the flat snowy expanses of a Russian landscape, the Borzoi was an ideal and versatile hunter. Various historical writings mention the long haired coursing dog’s existence. In the 11th century, the daughter of the Grand Duke of Kiev is recorded as taking three Borzoi with her as part of her dowry when she married Henry 1 of France but it wasn’t until 1260 that the Grand Duke of Novgorod gave a written description of coursing with Borzoi. It is also recorded that Czar Boris Godunov (1598-1605) sent a pair to the Shah of Persia but how the dogs coped in desert heat was not stated. A book written in 1635, 'The Code of Coursing' by Christian von Lessing provides such a detailed description of the long haired Russian dog that it reads much like a modern Standard. Eg “A lean, long head without a bend, the muzzle should be equal to the skull in length, no overshot bite…” etc. The author also states “If a hunter knows his own dogs, then he does not mix their breed with others. If they are fast, he must know the bloodlines and breeding.” This tendency to maintain pedigrees at a very early period is quite amazing but even today Russians proudly keep written pedigrees that were passed down the family for a hundred and fifty years or more.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
During the 17th and 18th centuries, various Czars, the aristocracy and wealthy owners of large estates adopted the Borzoi for both practical and recreational purposes. Russia was the main country for the production of fur coats, hats, clothing, bedding and floor coverings for the owners of cold stone castles in Europe and the Borzoi could catch game from wild mink and hare to fox and wolf without damaging the pelt. As trade with Russia opened up, many Europeans had seen these dogs in action and returned to give rave reports about their prowess. Around the same time, the Russian aristocracy began to follow the French fashion of hunting for sport. Soon huge and elaborate hunts were established with hundreds of dogs bred and great spectacles of wolf hunting were performed for the Czar, Princes and Grand Dukes. The value of a successful Borzoi was beyond price. There is a story that a Princess was given to a country squire in exchange for a Borzoi but the descendants claim that great grandmamma was exchanged for three Borzoi. It also became customary for the Czar to present a Borzoi as a valuable gift to various members of the European aristocracy so the breed gradually became better known in the west. Many written descriptions exist of the Russian hunts and many of the best Borzoi of the time are named and individual feats described. More books were written such as 'The Proper Caring of Borzois' in 1765 and 'Coursing' in 1775.

A Russian Baroness with her Borzoi team ready for the hunt In the early 1800’s, the Borzoi received its first blow to existence when Russian officers returned from the Napoleonic wars with English and Polish Greyhounds and some proceeded to cross them with the Russian dogs. Around the Polish border and in Southern Russia and the Crimea, these crosses developed into other named breeds of Sighthound which survived up to the Revolution but most became extinct during the turmoil. One survivor is the South Russian Hunting dog which resembles a Saluki cross with a slightly thicker coat. In the north and east of Russia, there were enough Borzoi breeders in remote areas to keep their dogs free of the western influence. Some traditional families were so proud of their bloodlines that nothing would induce them to sully their dogs with outside lines. Since they had huge numbers of dogs on their estates maintained by the serfs, it was easy enough to do without inbreeding.
18 - May 2017
The occasional Borzoi was still being sent to European fanciers and the occasional litter was bred. Queen Victoria bred a Borzoi cross Deerhound litter in 1856 and the line survives behind modern Deerhounds.
pair from the Czar which produced litters in 1869 and 1871 and the King of Prussia bred the occasional litter from dogs also obtained from the Czar as did the King of Sweden.
In 1861 at the height of the grand hunts, Czar Alexander II freed all Russian serfs from slavery. Without free labour, most estate owners could no longer afford the upkeep of dogs or property. Some of the best Borzoi were sold or given away to indiscriminate hunters but hundreds of other dogs were slaughtered, the land was divided up into small lots and the grand hunts came to an end.
The chaos and near extinction of the breed in Russia continued for several years until Count Sheremetyeff suggested in 1873 that interested members of the Russian aristocracy should band together to create 'The Imperial Society for the propagation of hounds and the regulation of hunting'. The Society sought out remaining pure bred Borzoi from various known family lines then organised shows and hunting trials and again maintained careful pedigrees of the best breeding stock. As the aristocracy of Moscow and St Petersburg rediscovered the sport of coursing with Borzoi, the breed suddenly regained great value and huge prices were paid for some dogs. A large country estate was given as payment for one Borzoi.
It is significant that five new tanneries started up in Russia at the time and the main pelts produced were from the massacred Borzoi. It was also in the early 1860’s that more Borzoi found their way to Europe. The Duchess of Manchester exhibited a pair in England in 1863, the Prince of Wales had a

It is from this time that the Russian Borzoi spread all over Europe and were exhibited at shows by their aristocratic owners. This was the next boom period for Borzoi. When the Grand Duke Nicholas, brother to Czar Alexander III decided to take up the sport of coursing, he created the great Perchino Hunt which was described in detail in a book by Prince Dimitri Walzoff. The Perchino dogs became the standard of perfection, bloodlines were thoroughly researched and numerous dogs were sold across the world to become champions. At Crufts in 1892, there were over 40 Russian imports amongst the 60 or so Borzoi exhibited and 20 of them were owned by Czar Nicholas II. The remaining owners were Princesses, Grand Dukes, Duchesses, Ladies and Counts along with a Colonel, a Captain and a Major.
There had been a flood of imports to England in the 10 years previously with well over a 100 Borzoi arriving from various members of the Imperial Society in Moscow and St Petersburg so that the Duchess of Newcastle, one of the main importers, successfully helped to form the first Borzoi Club outside of Russia. Germany and France followed soon after and Louis Doppelmann of Amsterdam owned one of the top Russian champions. His Doppelmann cigars showed a picture of a Borzoi on the band for decades. From the 1880’s to the First World War, the Borzoi was the status symbol of Europe.

Continued from page 19 Queen Alexandra owned and bred them and made up several English champions. When her Champion Alex died, the news was splashed across newspapers world wide including Australia. Australia’s first imports arrived in 1898 when the Czar gave a pair to Dr Charles Ryan in Melbourne for his services to the Russian army. These dogs are still behind some of today’s Borzoi. Elsewhere, the breed took over in greater numbers and many Art Nouveau bronze statues and paintings exist with a Borzoi depicted. All was well until the Russian Revolution.

With the uprising of the Bolsheviks against the aristocracy in 1917, Borzoi were again slaughtered by the hundreds in Russia. Some breeders chose to shoot the dogs before they fled from the approaching army, others were overwhelmed and were murdered with their dogs. A few of the best stud dogs were smuggled out to breeders in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany but the majority of Borzoi were killed. By the end of the Bolshevik Revolution, very few remained.
Although breeding was limited and the lines were becoming inbred, the Russian Borzoi survived until World War II.
A pair of the Czar’s dogs were held in the Leningrad Zoo and a few other individuals had been saved by a devoted owner here and there. About 11 Borzoi could be found around Leningrad in the 1920’s and that included the aging pair in the Zoo.
In 1964, Nikita Krushchev gave a Borzoi to Sir Rudi Sternberg in England after he organized a trade fair of British goods in Moscow. The dog ‘Boran’ was a gold medal winner and regarded as the best dog in Russia. In England Boran sired a litter to the top winning Champion bitch and several of the progeny became champions and top winners. One dog of this famous litter came to Australia and is behind some of our modern day Borzoi.
It was fortunate that one lady determined to save the breed and gathered a small group of people together to preserve the last of the Russian lines. Small litters were produced from the survivors including the Zoo dogs bred by the Czar. Later when Stalin decided that the Borzoi was no longer an object of scorn as a leftover from the aristocracy, he elevated the Borzoi to the National Dog of Russia and set up a state farm for breeding them. Various Communist Party officers started up the Moscow Hunt Club and the Borzoi was back doing what it had been bred for.
Returning officers brought back a pair of Borzoi from Germany that were descended from the famous Perchino dogs not far back on the pedigree. These two imports gave a much needed boost and from the 1950’s, Russia was back on track producing outstanding hunting dogs of a very unique shape.
A last little bit of history was witnessed in 1991 when four English Borzoi breeders wanted to see the remains of the Perchino estate of the Grand Duke Nicholas. Several Russian breeders went with them and took their dogs. It took hours to travel over nearly impassable dirt tracks until the little village of Perchino was reached to the stunned amazement of the inhabitants. They had not seen a stranger since before the Revolution and had never seen a motorised vehicle. One old man came forward, hugged a Borzoi around the neck and burst into tears. His father had been the head kennel man for the Grand Duke and the Bolsheviks had shot him in front of his son then destroyed every part of the mansion and the nearby church. The villagers were living in what remained of the kennels because they had nowhere else to go. This whole scene of the villagers seeing strangers and Borzoi again was caught on video by one of the English visitors.

The first Commonwealth Grand Champion in Queensland was an imported Borzoi from 1929 with Best in Show wins in Qld, NSW and Victoria. He was the only Borzoi to gain this high award. Since then, other foreign breeders have made the pilgrimage to Perchino. The Borzoi that was hugged by the old man became known as the Perchino dog and he went on to be an outstanding stud dog siring Russian Champion and Grand Champion descendants. One Russian descendant lives in Brisbane. In 2008, the International Borzoi Conference was held in St Petersburg in conjunction with the Russian Borzoi National. Numerous people came from around the world to see the Russian dogs, meet the breeders and discuss all points of the Borzoi in the most beautiful city of the Czars. It was the first major gathering for Borzoi in Russia for over a hundred years.

The Tsar’s estate at Gatchina is now a public park and people can be seen walking their dogs including a Borzoi or two amongst the tree shaded avenues. In Perchina the ruined church has been fully restored and the village is expanding with new buildings. In 2016 the World Show was held in Moscow and attracted thousands of people and dogs from many countries. The enormous venue was beautifully decorated throughout in a blue and white theme, blue carpets for all rings and of course the logo had to be a stunning Borzoi design in traditional Russian folk art. There is also several other events just outside of Zone 2 that our members will be travelling to. Safe travels to all attending events throughout May.
Ag Shows We have now hit Ag Show Season with quite a few scheduled over the coming months. During May, one of my favourite that I have been to for many years is the Alpha Show. This is one of the smallest shows in Zone 2 and is in a remote location some 450km dead west of Rockhampton – so really getting into red soil area. The Show itself is a real country Show and lovely fun to attend as well as being a big boom for the local community. Where else can one enjoy the Governor General, a pig, the public and the showgirls all wandering through the assembly area? Please try to support Ag Shows wherever possible – they are often smaller affairs and struggle financially so our ongoing support is critical to their sustainability. These are one of the few opportunities we have where we are on display to the general public so it’s a great PR opportunity for Dogs Queensland.

Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World
We have unfortunately lost a few Ag Shows this year at Monto and Emerald, and while we hope to get these back up and running in the future, it is really important that exhibitors support them and the marketing and presentation of purebred dogs to communities. The financial benefit of having a dog Show in a small community cannot be ignored either and our attendance does have a positive impact.
Keeping Things Clean After a few recent Shows in Zone 2, exhibitors are reminded to be responsible for their dog droppings and rubbish. At a recent Show weekend, despite several requests to members to clean up after their dogs, there were bombs everywhere. It is not exactly a positive image for Dogs Queensland to hear, “yes, the purebred dogs had a Show here on the weekend and left great steaming piles of dog excrement behind for people to walk in”. This selfish and irresponsible behaviour could also jeopardise our ability to use the venues we are using for dog Shows – if we don’t treat them with respect, we will lose them.
they only get six points, or even worse, if their breed went best and runner-up may have won the award from the position of reserve challenge and got nothing. So in a very simple, plain language explanation, the exhibit that wins runner up to best exhibit in group can be awarded up to fifteen (15) challenge points or ten less than the group winner, if the group points happen to be less than twenty-five. The minimum number of points that the runner up in group winner can receive is six (6). There is no disadvantage to winners of this award, as if they won more challenge points than fifteen at breed level they will retain those points. There is a specially designed card for runner up to best exhibit in group which is now being used, keep an eye out for it at Shows. If in doubt, ask the Show Manager at your Shows for any clarification.
At the same weekend, rubbish was being thrown on top of (only to fall on the ground around it) or beside already full bins when there were plenty of other bins only a short distance away where the rubbish could have been placed appropriately. Please, please, please – clean up after your dogs and be responsible with rubbish. It is extremely unfair on the Committees who work hard to put these events on for us, to treat them like slaves to pick up after us when we’re grotty. Please treat the facilities we use as you would your own home – well, respectfully at least. A small minority of ignorant, irresponsible exhibitors are impacting everyone through their poor behaviour in this regard.
From 1 st January 2017, there have been some new Rules introduced where the runner-up to best exhibit in group is eligible for challenge points, and potentially a bit of a bonus in terms of recognition for their award.
• Transcervical insemination with fresh, chilled and frozen semen • Semen collection and freezing • Progesterone testing • Dog and bitch fertility assessment and much more Dr Scott Norman BVSc PhD DACT Registered specialist - veterinary reproduction Dr Jennifer Larsen BVBiol BVSc
I’m sure we have all seen a sole representative of a breed in a large group line-up of dogs who is awarded runner-up to best exhibit in group and probably feel a little sorry for them that

Volunteers needed – Show Workers I know that I do this topic to death but the reality is that our band of willing and available workers is dropping all the time as people get exhausted from being flogged in volunteer roles by Show Managers trying to keep the Show running. I would like to thank all of those that volunteer to do these jobs and step up, often at short notice to do so. If everyone offered to officiate, we would not be required to do it very often which would allow everyone to have their turn at relaxing at, and enjoying Shows. Help and training is available to get you up and running and believe it or not, it is actually fun to Write or Steward. All the workers I know are incredibly funny and interesting so you are bound to have a great time. Without all of us participating and helping out at Shows, we are going to only be left with the options of long waits and delays until a worker comes forward to help; or paying increased entries to cover the cost of bringing workers into the area and paying them.
Dogs Queensland Elections As most members would be aware, Dogs Queensland recently held an election for six of the Board of Directors positions. I would like to welcome the six elected Directors, Norma Zimmerle, David Weil, Ainslie Carius, Lawrie Knauth, Duncan McAllister and Bill Smith. All of these Directors have been supportive of regional areas and Zone 2 so I am very confident that the interests of regional members will be considered as part of decision-making processes. Sadly, three of our very long-term Directors in Ulla Greenwood, Lionel Blumel and Sandra Mundt are outgoing from the Board of Directors. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Ulla, Lionel and Sandra for the significant contributions they have made in their capacity as Directors over an extensive period and their support of regional areas.
Submissions Submissions for the column of news or photos are always welcome. Please feel free to send to me at: craig.pettett1@bigpond.com Until next time.

WAR DOG OPERATIVES
Series 4, Profile 6 – Afghanistan Lance Corporal Josh Collbourne – Royal Australian Engineers Dateline for this profile is 18th December 2009 Written by George Hulse
ackground Josh is a country boy having been raised in the country town of Freeling, four hours drive north of Adelaide. He attended the local public schools and agricultural college. He left school at seventeen years of age and worked as a general farm hand and fruit picker. But this became a bore for an adventurous seventeen year old and on 29th January 2003, Josh joined the Australian Regular Army (ARA). Josh attended the Australian Recruit Training Centre (ARTC) at Kapooka and on graduation was allotted to the Royal Australian Engineers (RAE). He attended the Initial Employment Training (IET) at the School of Military Engineering (SME) at Moorebank in NSW and graduated as a Field Engineer. He was posted to the 1st Combat Engineer Regiment (1 CER) in Darwin where he rounded out his training as a combat engineer. After two years in 1 CER, Josh applied to join the Special Air Service (SAS) or 4th Commando Regiment (4 Cdo Regt) but could not complete his transfer due to urgent family oriented problems. He was posted to the Incident Response Regiment at Holsworthy NSW in 2005 as a combat engineer and served there until 2007. In 2006, Josh was encouraged by his Troop Commander to apply for an explosive detecting dog (EDD) handlers course. He was successful and attended the fourteen week EDD course at SME where he was teamed up with EDD Mandy. He then returned to IRR with Mandy and worked in the EDD Section under the command of Corporal (Cpl) David Simpson. When Josh was warned for duty in Afghanistan he realised that Mandy was too old to re-deploy to Afghanistan and teamed up with EDD Ribbon.

Afghanistan First Deployment In April 2007, Josh was deployed to Afghanistan with EDD Ribbon and operated with Special Operations Task Group 4 (SOTG 4). The deployment to Afghanistan flew on a RAAF C 17 super transport aircraft which stopped at several Australian RAAF Bases to pick up troops and equipment on their way to Afghanistan. The aircraft had a brief refuelling stop at the United States Base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, before flying straight into Tarin Kowt (TK) from there. On arrival at TK, Josh and Ribbon received familiarisation training for about two weeks before they were ready for patrol duty, outside the wire. When they did set off on their first patrol it was at 2200 hrs and was well into darkness. The patrol had two platoons of Australian infantry with their Company Headquarters (CHQ). Josh and Ribbon travelled with CHQ. In Josh’s words: “The terrain was like I imagined the moon to look like. Bare, with lots of rocks and holes and you could see for a fair distance without the use of night vision devices (NVD). It was a Third World country with everyone dressed in traditional clothing which obviously hadn’t changed in hundreds of years. I expected to see Jesus walk around the next corner. It was my first trip out of Australia and it was no holiday. Our task was to search for Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), explosive and arms caches, conduct vehicle checking point duties, compound and building search and a range of other support duties for our infantry and Special Forces (SF) units. That first trip exposed us to all those situations. It was our real life shake-out operation”. Over the next few months Josh and Ribbon experienced small scale firefights with the Taliban, but no major contact was encountered.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
There were numerous patrols where Josh and Ribbon patrolled and worked outside the wire. In fact, Josh and Ribbon were on patrols away from TK for four and a half months out of the six months that they were there. They did find a number of caches which contained AK 47s and shotguns plus ammunition in houses – called 'qualas' in the local lingo - and an IED buried in a road. The heat and dust were constant bugbears, but 'came with the territory' and it was a job to keep both man and dog as comfortable as could be achieved under the circumstances. Josh did not get a Rest of Colleague On Leave (ROCOL) opportunity but would have loved to have gone home to see his wife and baby son, even if for just a couple of days.
A task mainly centred at the EDD centre at SME. Josh helped by training candidate EDD and evaluating their capability to work effectively under combat conditions. He did this for a part of 2008. Then in December 2008, Josh was warned for his second deployment to Afghanistan. By now, Josh had been teamed up with EDD Harry.
Afghanistan Second Deployment In January 2009, Josh and EDD Harry deployed by air to Afghanistan in support of MRTF 4 and proceeded through the incountry familiarisation training. This brought Harry up to combat readiness with the inventory of explosives, caches and other training media not available in Australia. One item which occurs with common frequenc y in Afghanistan is the use of Home Made Explosives (HME). All EDD need to develop a “nose” for those as well as manufactured mines left behind from the Soviet era.
At the completion of his first tour of duty in TK, Josh and Ribbon, rotated back to IRR at Holsworthy.
2nd Combat Engineer Regiment On arrival back into IRR in late 2007, Josh was almost immediately posted to 2 CER in Brisbane. After taking his leave, Josh packed up his family and moved to Brisbane. A constant issue with the provision of combat ready EDD is the recruitment, training and evaluation of them.
Josh and Harry were based at TK and patrolled with friendly forces into the surrounding area. They had a number of finds including IED, caches, explosives, ammunition and weapons. In areas where the EDD were not used, there were four deflagrations. A deflagration is where the explosive element in the IED does not completely fire, resulting in a partial detonation. An interesting aspect of the use of EDD is that they can also prove to the negative (there is nothing there). Many times the EDD do not indicate the presence of anything at all during a patrol. On further checking with other combat engineer elements using electronic 'mine detectors' and visual inspection, these have validated that there were no devices, and that the dog had not missed any on that occasion.
May 2017 - 33
Member Insight The Queensland Dog World
Continued from page 33 However, it would be unintelligent to suggest that the EDD do not miss indicating the presence of explosives. There are a number of factors which sometimes work against the capability of a dog to scent out every last piece of ordnance on every occasion that it is employed. Those factors will not be discussed here. On his second deployment, Josh found that the nature of enemy action had changed. The Taliban were now a composite group containing many personnel from outside Afghanistan. It was now more accurate to call them 'insurgents'. The contacts with these insurgents took on a different nature compared to his first deployment. In his words: “Harry and I were about to go on another patrol, but it was a pretty dark part of my deployment. A week earlier a mate of mine, Corporal Hopkins, was killed in action (KIA) and one day before we took off on this patrol another mate, Sergeant 'JT' was KIA disarming an IET. JT had a wife and two young kids. We went on patrol with a heavy heart but the job had to be done. We patrolled to the north of TK to a point where a large river cut through some rugged terrain which did have a good cover of vegetation. Coalition forces had established a number of Forward Observation Bases (FOB) on both sides of the river to observe insurgent activity. As our patrol travelled along the Eastern side of the river, we were aware of a group of about 50 insurgents following behind us on the Western side of the river and at varying distances between 20 to 400 metres away. The distance depended on their ability to obtain cover from fire as they moved. They were obviously shadowing us. Cpl Hopkins had been KIA by small arms fire in one of these FOB a week earlier. We patrolled passed an FOB manned by Afghan National Army (ANA) troops and continued in a Northerly direction.
We set up an 'overwatch' position on one of the river crossings at a choke point where the insurgents would be forced to cross if they were going to do so. They generally did this at night. We stayed there for about three weeks using a system of movement and rest periods to maintain the overwatch on the crowssing point. Part of the overwatch was an old disused school on the western side of the river. This was being used by Taliban intimidation patrols as an exit and escape route for their terrorising operations on the local civilian community. We patrolled there and found IED and other items of interest in that building and qualas in the area. The IED was removed by our Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) personnel. Next day we went back, and there was another one waiting for us. The EOD guys removed that one too. Third day, same thing. I must say that the EOD guys were always busy and always doing a great job. Just before our patrol was due to leave the area, the infantry platoon commander requested permission to mount an Observation Point (OP) close to the river crossing. He received it and took a small force into his OP. In the early hours of the next morning a group of insurgent IED layers crossed the river and began concealing their IED in the road. The OP patrol opened fire and neutralised all of them. Then a huge firefight started between the OP and insurgent troops who had been placed in a fire support role on the Western side of the river. It grew in size and intensity until we were all involved in a fierce cross-river exchange. The contact continued until about 1500 hrs that afternoon when a friendly force commenced a sweep from the North onto the insurgent position. When the firing ceased, the OP patrol returned to the main force completely intact. We had kicked arse in the memory of Hopkins and JT. We returned to TK a lot happier than we had left it. In May 2009, Josh and Harry rotated out of Afghanistan and RTA to 2 CER in Brisbane.
2 CER After a short leave period, Josh and Harry were back into it again. Exercises in Queensland and evaluations at Woomera had the 2 CER EDD Section away from home for three months out of the five from July to Christmas 2009. It is expected that the 2 CER EDD Section will deploy to Afghanistan again very soon.

Resumes of LKAQ Judges Mrs Helen Hill (Vic) Helen obtained her first purebred dog, a Samoyed in 1975 and as luck would have it, a very good one from a top kennel. With the help of the breeder's daughter she exhibited him quite successfully and two bitches followed to start her kennel "Mezen" She also has a Miniature Longhaired Dachshund. As much as she enjoyed the show ring, breeding was where her passion lay. She took up judging to enhance her knowledge of dogs and has enjoyed the study. She has judged in NSW, VIC, SA and TAS. She has also judged Samoyeds in England and Slovakia. Miss Margaret Joyce (VIC) Margaret started showing in 1963 with a Beagle and later commenced an involvement with Cocker Spaniels. She has handled an Australian Terrier for Marj Bywater (Severn Oaks). Her current breed is Boxers. Mr Robert Lucas (NSW) Robert became interested in showing dogs as a child, having been brought up in a household of Dachshunds. His first show dog however, was a Dalmatian purchased in 1979, and he has continued to breed and exhibit Dalmatians ever since; firstly under the Dalriant prefix, and subsequently under Ravenwynter. In that time his kennel has made up over 30 Champions, including several Grand Champions. His dogs have won 16 Best in Show awards including 8 Dalmatian Specialties, and 10 Royal Show Challenges throughout Australia. On many occasions, he has won the prestigious Challenge Cup for top Dalmatian in NSW. Other breeds that he has been associated with are German Shorthaired Pointers and Beagles. Ms Rosemary Duffy Rosemary acquired a Border Collie as her first show dog in 1974 and stayed with showing and trialling that breed for some 18 years. In 1993 she decided to move to Cavaliers as a smaller breed and she has bred and shown this breed ever since. Rosemary has also campaigned a Lakeland Terrier. Mrs Sandra Mashford As a young girl Sandra showed and bred Welsh Corgi Pembrokes in conjunction with her father. Then in 1958, she and her husband established Sandale Kennels with English Cocker Spaniels of all colours. Over the next two decades they bred, imported and exported this breed very successfully with many in show awards. Labradors were also introduced during the latter period again with much success. Their next breed was the Whippet and that breed interest continued very successfully for some 25 years and involved the importation of dogs to improve our bloodlines. Sandra has judged extensively at International, Breed and All Breed Shows and World Shows in 30 countries. Miss Kerrie Reeder (NSW) Kerrie’s first family Staffordshire Bull Terriers dated back to 1967 when there was only a handful in the country. The breeding and showing of this breed under the prefix Gamester has carried on for several generations. Kerrie has been judging for forty years in countries including: Natal South Africa, Yorkshire in the UK, Sweden, Philidelphia at the Montgomery Terrier Show USA, New Zealand, Vancouver Canada and all States of Australia. The highlights have been judging and awarding CCs to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier in the UK, judging Nationals in the USA and Canada and the World Terrier Show in Stockholm Sweden. Dr Lesley Cameron Lesley's first pedigreed dog was a GSP from the renowned Kazia kennels. That started a 35 year journey of exhibiting, breeding and judging. Over the years she has had the pleasure of owning and showing a number of breeds - GSPs, Hungarian Vizslas, Italian Spinoni, English Springer Spaniels, Pointers and Dobermanns. Lesley has bred and exhibited Pointers for many years now, under her prefix Gaelforce. While the Pointer is the main focus of her kennel, she finds it hard to live without at least one Springer and Doberman in the household and on the show team. And they all have to get along with the horses as she also has Norwegian Fjords and Shire Horses. Lesley has judged in all States apart from WA, and in NZ. She has also had the great privilege of judging the Pointer Club of Ireland and English Setter Club of Ireland shows.
