The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World

President’s Message for November 2016 Even though Christmas is almost upon us, there is still a number of major events and activities happening for Dogs Queensland. Dog and Puppy of the Year 2016 This year’s Puppy and Dog of the Year events were a great success. The new format for the judging was well received, and there was a strong entry for both the Puppy and Dog of Year categories. Congratulations must go to the DOTY Committee for their continued efforts over the last year to organise and hold Dogs Queensland’s most prestigious event. To our sponsors (listed below), I would like to pass on a vote of thanks for your contribution, and we look forward to a long continued association with Dogs Queensland: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Puppy Farming Legislation Whilst I haven’t been able to update the members on the puppy farming Legislation over the last two months, I can assure you all that Dogs Queensland is still working very hard with the Queensland Government to achieve the best possible solution for our members. Hawker Britton have been actively meeting with Queensland Government authorities from Biosecurity and the Minister’s office to assist Dogs Queensland in achieving a much better outcome for our members. Hawker Britton are hopeful that we will soon have a written confirmation from the Minister’s office of the Queensland Governments proposal to Dogs Queensland. The Board will continue to keep members up to date as information comes to hand. Service Delivery Review Board Matters will soon be handing down the final draft of the Service Delivery Review for Dogs Queensland. Rachel Fraser from Board Matters will be meeting with the Board this month to discuss the findings and recommendations of the Service Delivery Review. We will keep all members up to date on the proposed implementation of recommendations from this review. The process of developing the Service Delivery Review has been very long and involved. On behalf of the Board of Dogs Queensland, I would like to thank Rachel and the staff at Board Matters for their professional and understanding approach to this review.

Members Interested In Herding

The Herding Subcommittee will be conducting a meeting for all interested members to discuss the proposed Rule changes at Durack at 10:00am on Sunday the 27th November 2016. The meeting is open to all interested members to discuss the best options for our delegate to vote for the Rule changes at the National meeting in February 2017. Dog World Copy Deadline Please note that the Copy deadline for the February 2017 Issue will be brought forward to 19th December 2016.

Dogs Queensland Fees 2017 The preparation of the 2017 Budget is an important function as ultimately the budget determines the level of increase necessary in respect to our fees and charges and in this way affects all members. The budget policy of containing increases in fees and charges to a minimum has been maintained in 2017. The following fees were minimally increased by 1.5% with effect from 1st January 2017. Litter Registrations: Litter registrations (under 3 months) Litter registrations (3 – 6 months) Litter registrations (6 – 12 months)

$42 to $43 per Pup $70 to $71 per Pup $88 to $89 per Pup

Membership Fees, Prefix Fees, Transfer Fees, Judges Licence Fees, Magazine Advertising Fees, Title Fees and Re-Registration Fees remain at 2016 levels. Club Affiliation Fees, Ground Levies and Administration Fees will be set at the end of October Board Meeting.

November 2016 - 5

Dogs Queensland Board Notes The Queensland Dog World

Continued from page 5 The Board has however recognised that a number of members utilise their Prefix very sparingly, in fact more than 50% of financial members with a financial prefix did not register a litter in 2016, thus the decision not to increase the prefix renewal cost. However, in regards to Litter Registrations, the Board has agreed to place a levy on those Members that continue to Register higher amounts of Litters. Bearing this in mind, commencing on 1st January 2017, once a breeder has whelped more than 6 litters in the calendar year, the 7th litter whelped onwards in that calendar year will attract the following fees per dog, irrespective of when the litter is registered, ie double the usual registration fee. However, the applicable fee will be based upon the registration fee at time of receipt by the office. Litter registrations (under 3 months) Litter registrations (3 – 6 months) Litter registrations (6 – 12 months)

$86 per Pup $142 per Pup $178 per Pup

From the Event Managers' and Stewards' Committee any think that Stewarding is just a chore that has to be done. It's not! It is an essential learning experience for becoming a Judge, and with the right attitude, it can be an interesting and enjoyable way to spend a day learning about the other side of showing dogs. Stewarding is your stepping stone to a Judging licence. Here are some of the reasons why we believe trainees must work in the ring: 1. To gain confidence (i.e. feel confident about being out in the ring in front of others) 2. To develop an appropriate and efficient ring manner 3. To observe and evaluate judging technique - watch other Judges to decide what is good technique, ring usage and manner 4. To acquire additional breed knowledge by (a) observing many different breeds exhibited (b) observing Judges' placings (compared to your own imaginary placings) and sometimes taking note of Judges' comments as they judge (c) talking and listening to exhibitors as you organise them for the ring

If you sign a contract to work for a Club, be sure that you uphold that contract (contracts are binding and it may affect your later progress if you are found to be unreliable). If you are unable to honour your contract, then it is your responsibility to find a replacement and notify the Club. Can you imagine being a Show Manager and on the day of the Show, several contracted Stewards don't arrive?

It is an essential learning experience for becoming a Judge, and with the right attitude, it can be an interesting and enjoyable way to spend a day learning about the other side of showing dogs. A difficult and frustrating situation because the exhibitors expect the Show to go ahead as always. I am sure that if it were a judging contract you had signed, then you would be there (regardless of feeling sick, oooh forgot, husband in hospital, grandma dying, etc). Steward's contracts are no different to Judges' contracts, you must honour them. I suggest you place them at home in a conspicuous place so you don't forget your commitments. Also, note that you may charge travelling expenses, etc if you are just travelling to work for the Show but not exhibiting.

5. To learn to manage time well 6. To learn to manage, without undue fuss, the problems that might arise 7. To appreciate that appearance and dress are very important 8. In general, as a Steward, you should encourage the respect and confidence of the exhibitors in your ability to perform your job well. You should likewise treat the exhibitors with courtesy and respect. These qualities will be remembered when later, you judge. It is important that you are consistent and firm. The Ring Steward controls the ring, not the Judge. You must make the sensible, correct decisions regarding dogs entering the ring. To do this, you will need to know the Rules pretty well, in fact very well. No matter what, use your head (i.e. a bit of common sense) and stick to the Rules. Just a word about Stewarding contracts.

Member Insight The Queensland Dog World

Humidicribs. We all know that no maternity ward would be without them. We also know that that they have been on the wishlist of dog breeders for years, but have been prohibitively expensive. Finally, all that's changed. iPaws All For Paws has released an affordable Humidicrib onto the Australian market. We talked to Peter Irby from iPaws, who is amazed at the response from Vets and Breeders alike. Peter tells how the first unit arrived and a Vet asked if he could utilise it for a caesarian the following day to try it out. He was so impressed he sent the puppies home in it, the breeder bought it and he had to buy another! Our feedback is amazing, and not just for sick puppies. Healthy puppies thrive in these units. We have testimonials galore from breeders who describe them as an absolute must. Heat blankets and hot water bottles were fine last century, but in 2016 there's no excuse for not having this life determining equipment on hand.

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

The uptake has been so good we've been able to make them even cheaper with prices starting from just $799 plus GST.

Our feedback is amazing, and not just for sick puppies. Healthy puppies thrive in these units. We even have finance available so you can have a unit when your dog whelps, without worrying about finding even more money before those puppies arrive! Curly Coated Retriever My Loyal Friends, My Busy Workmates, My Beautiful Dogs. Lyn Kemp

y love for Curlies started in 1960 when my father brought home Lezah Sally. While I showed her, she was also the retriever dog on shooting weekends with Dad and his friends. From these early years I have campaigned my dogs in the show world and achieved some great successes with them including a Reserve in Show at the Brisbane Royal in 2007 with Sally – Dual Ch(T) Curltriever Go Sally Go CDX RN.

Then Riley – Ch Hollyspring Robbie Burns CD, a beautiful, happy, large black boy continued the trend in Obedience and Tracking. Next is Sally - Dual Ch(T) Curltriever Go Sally Go CDX RN, a lovely black girl who not only achieved a Champion Title in Tracking but an Open Title in Obedience and a Rally Novice Title. Sally is still part of our family and was recently joined by her grandson Bennet – Dual Ch (T) Curltriever Mr President.

As our family grew up and left home I wanted to do more in the dog world to promote this old but regal breed and so commenced my involvement in Obedience, Rally Obedience, Tracking and Track & Search.

Bennet is a large liver boy and just achieved his Tracking Champion title with a straight 8 from 8 passes.

In the last fifteen plus years we have had some very special dogs as part of our home. Our liver boy Murphy – Curltriever Murphys Law CDX started my involvement in Obedience and Tracking.

He recently gained his Novice R ally Obedience Title and has passes towards h i s CC D Ti t l e i n

Obedience and Track & Search dog Title. While many of the Curly Coats that we have had have been Champions in the show ring, their soundness and beautiful temperaments as well as their intelligence, work ethic and compatibility with people has been why this breed has been an important and wonderful part of my life for so many years. came across my first Curly Coated Retriever when I went looking for a Flat Coated Retriever at a Dog Show in Sydney many, many years ago now. I was determined: I wanted a Flat Coated Retriever – my family thought I was crazy... but being a redhead, I was determined that that was what I wanted. So off I went to the St Ives Annual Dog Show and I was going to find me a Flat Coated Retriever. That was, until I accidentally came across a big liver dog with curls whose name was Jake. It was love at first sight. I took one look at that gorgeous open face with the gentle eyes and I was hooked and it was the beginning of an ongoing love story. I had accidentally found what was to become my ongoing passion – Curly Coated Retrievers - and it has stayed with me to this day.

Gunmajor Have a Chat - Jake

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

The Curly Coated Retriever is a strong upstanding dog with a degree of elegance and a distinctive coat of crisp tight curls. He is the largest of the retriever breeds and also one of the oldest. Males stand at 69 cms to the withers and females 64 cms. The coat is black or liver with the most common colour being black. A commonly asked question is 'Do they shed?' Yes as they have hair, they do! 'Are they a relation to the Labradoodle?' – No! Not forgetting, 'Are they a Poodle Cross?' Absolutely not! An intelligent, loyal, steady and reliable dog, the Curly is proud, friendly, selfconfident and independent and may also seem aloof at times. If he decides that he likes you, then you are in for a real treat as he is lovable, trustworthy and a steadfast friend. He is well suited to most activities, Field, Obedience, Water Retrieving, Gundog Retrieving, Tracking, Showing and especially as a trusted family companion. He is a recognised breed with the Australian National Kennel Club (ANKC). So am I convincing you that this dog is for you? If yes, you need to ensure that the breeder can provide an original registration certificate from ANKC to ensure that you are purchasing a purebred Curly Coated Retriever. There are many advantages of owning a purebred dog.

Check out the Curly Coated Retriever Club of Victoria’s web page: www.curlycoatedretrieverclub.com You should also ask for copies of relevant health tests conducted on the puppy’s parent e.g. PRA, EIC and Hip Scores (more information on CCRAV website). There are two Curly Coated Retriever As s o c i a t i o n s i n Au s t r a l i a – Th e Curly Coated Retriever Association of Victoria and The Curly Coated R e t r i e ve r As s o c i at i o n o f N S W – contact details of both Clubs will be at the bottom of this article. Both Clubs welcome new members of show dogs, family dogs, companion dogs, in fact any Curly dog!

Curly Coated Retrievers History and Development Their ancestry is mostly unknown. This is because in the very early days, dogs had their purpose, such as retrieving, and various cross mating would have taken place to produce the best dog for a particular purpose. There would be several dogs around in those early years that were used for retrieving that are now extinct -

The 'Murray' is a much smaller dog (46 – 53cms) with a much looser coat, large ears and only comes in a Liver colour. The Murray is currently not recognised with the ANKC.

Continued from page 19 The Large Rough Water dog, Tweed Water Spaniel, Lesser Newfoundland, to name a few together with a few that remain, the Irish Water Spaniel, and dogs from the Continent, the Wetterhound, Barbett, and Poodle. The Curly was first exhibited in the show ring in 1860, and four years later there were separate classes for the wavy coated and curly coated varieties. They were very popular during those early years and were on many of the large estates, however the war years and the introduction of the Labrador were to greatly reduce their popularity. Their fortunes have ebbed and flowed throughout the years with registrations as low as 5 in 1919 to the record of 168 in 1994 (UK Curly Club).

Training Curlies are intelligent and very smart (in fact too smart for their own good sometimes!). They are easily trained, but you need to work around their streak of independence. They also become bored quite easily, so any training needs to be done in the guise of a game and only for a short amount of time. Repeat and Reward! As with every dog breed, early socialisation is a must, giving him access to as many different situations as is possible. Check out your local Kennel Club for puppy show training classes where you can socialise your Curly puppy in a friendly and safe environment or ask your Vet about puppy pre-school classes.

The Murray River Curly Aust Ch. Cutecurl Kristal - Max

As with most pedigree dogs, the Curly Coated Retriever does come with a range of health issues that all potential owners should be aware of:• • • • •

Hip dysplasia Eye problems Exercise Induced Collapse Bloat Epilepsy

However, in saying that, Curly Coated Retrievers are a robust breed and have an average life expectancy of 9-14 years. With responsible breeding programmes and care, breeders are striving to increase this life expectancy even further - my old girl passed at 15 years of age last year. When purchasing a puppy, you should also ask your breeder for copies of relevant health tests conducted on the puppy’s parent e.g. PRA, EIC and Hip Scores (more information on CCRAV website). Remember, Information is power!

The question of the Murray River Curly often raises its head... The Murray River Curly is often mistaken for the Curly Coated Retriever – The Murray River Curly Coated Retriever is very different in looks and temperament and their DNA does not link them in any part to the Curly Coated Retriever.

And Of Course, The Curly Coat – How Do You Manage It?

One from the early twentieth century about the preparation of the Curly Coated Retriever’s coat states "The use of curling irons continues... the exuberance of superfluous curly showing off the offending ringlets. It is therefore very advisable for intending purchasers unless they know a vendor to be above such practices to examine a dog of this description thoroughly before they conclude a purchase or possible disappointment may be in store for them". Then, L.P.C.Astley, writing in 1907, likened the Curly ’s coat to the

However, if you plan to show your Curly, the best way to prepare their coat is as follows: This article is by Audrey Nicholls; Darelyn Curly Coated Retrievers).

Equipment: - Sharp scissors, thinning scissors, sponge, wide toothed comb. The correct coated dog requires very little preparation, a light trim about once a month is sufficient to keep him in perfect shape, but many curlies need weekly preparation for show purposes. Before moving onto descriptions of the necessary tasks in preparing your dog for the show ring, it may be interesting to read a couple of quotations from almost ninety years ago.

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

Ears Trim along the edge of the leather to give a neat outline. Cut the curls on the ears to make them short, especially the ones on the top of the ears, but not so short as to lose the curl.

Head Trim the hair from underneath the ear towards the throat. This must be done at least a fortnight before a show so that the cut edge does not cause the dog to "Fly his ears".

Easy! They are the original wash and wear dog.

Trimming and Coat Preparation

faker’s art is the thin open coat, which by careful manipulation can be greatly improved!"

Some dogs do not have the desired flat hair on the top of the skull – a tendency for a top knot. If there are waves or curls here, trim them back with thinning scissors. Trim the curls to give a smooth line to the top of the head. close fitting tightly curled beautiful head of hair on the African people opining that this was the only "true and proper one”... Of which every knot is solid and inseparable. A coat of this quality is not capable of improvement by any methods of grooming for the simple reason that its natural condition is itself perfect. The little locks should be so close together as to be impervious to water and all parts of the body should be evenly covered with them, including the tail and legs. A bad class of coat and one that readily yields to the

Throat and Neck Curlies do have a tendency to grow very long hair in this area. Just cut back to give a neat outline down to the brisket (follow the line down the shoulder to the neck).

Forelegs Trim hair around elbow. Trim curls on the back of the legs to give a neat outline. Don’t cut too close unless you have a heavy boned dog.

Continued from page 21

Pasterns Cut hair close to the skin to make a neat foot.

Body

Trim curls on the rest of the tail but not too short – starting with the root and working toward the tip. Trim around the tip but not too close as this is the place that is often caught by wagging against sharp objects. The tail should be wide at the root and certainly not a 'rat-tail'.

Trim curls to give a neat outline but do not cut too short.

Feet

Hindquarters

Some Curlies may grow hair between the toes – if they do, pull the hair upwards and cut downwards towards the nails. Push remaining hair back between the toes.

Trim any long hair on legs. Cut hair on hocks very short. Some dogs do not grow surplus hair here.

Tail Cut hair on underside of the tail fairly short.

Show Preparation I have heard of many different 'secret' preparations that have been used on the coat – glycerin and Jeyes fluid, to name just two, but plain

water, preferably rain water, is quite adequate. If you are in a position that the dog can swim, then this is the ideal way of wetting the coat. Just rinse off with water after being in the dam to get rid of slimy dam water and particles. To keep in perfect show condition, the coat needs to be thoroughly wet once a day with just water. If the facilities for swimming are not available, really soak the coat with water, with the aid of a sponge or chamois. After the dog has shaken the surplus water away, use the fingers to massage the coat in small circular movements – getting right down to the skin. All of the body, including the tail and the backs of the legs need this treatment.

This will get rid of any dead hair. Pat the coat down with the flat of the hand. Any coat that is shaggy needs to be trimmed off. For a pet dog, the above treatment can be done fortnightly.

For more information about Curly Coated Retriever puppies, rescue dogs please contact: Melinda Naughton – Secretary Curly Coated Retriever Association of Victoria

A male often casts his coat once a year – a bitch after each season or false season. The easiest way to get rid of dead hair is to comb the coat out. Use a wide toothed comb (not steel). Comb in small sections back towards the head. This is an ideal time to wash the coat with a good medicated shampoo.

Phone: 0409 383 363 Email: naumel@bigpond.com

You can also comb out any dead coat while the shampoo is in the coat.

Carol Moeser – Secretary Curly Coated Retriever Association of NSW

Rinse the coat well. The Curly’s coat should be dull, but if you have a dog with a very dry coat, it will benefit from being soaked in coconut oil periodically. This treatment is particularly useful for the liver colored variety.

GOLD COAST CANINE CLUB INC In Memory Of Freda Jermey

Freda and Peter were founding members of the Gold Coast Canine Club Inc, and members of the previous Gold Coast Kennel Club. The year 1966 is approximately when they joined the Gold Coast Kennel Club. Freda and Peter came to Australia in 1961 and bought their first Pekingese in the 60's. They were granted Life Membership of the Gold Coast Canine Club Inc in 1977. Freda was Vice President in 1995 and Trophy Officer and Show Secretary for many years. Freda was also involved with organising many of our social events. 'PETEDA' Pekingese bred and imported many champions and won multiple Best in Show awards. They also had Keeshond, but it is not known if they bred them. Freda encouraged and assisted other exhibitors in her hobby and was always well presented, as were her exhibits.

By the number of Toy exhibitors who attended Freda's funeral, and even though January is not a favoured month for showing Toys, the exhibitors will surely honour Freda with good entries. It would be an honour to have Freda remembered as a loved and respected Breeder, Exhibitor and Club Member and the best Trophy Officer we ever had. She gave unstinting loyalty and support to Clubs and causes she believed in, a lady of great veracity. Jenny Ingram and Dee Byster

The Gold Coast Canine Club Inc and Dogs Queensland Working Together to Assist Open Show Judges CHAMPION SWEEPSTAKES For many years clubs have been working on ways to give our trainee judges the ability to put their hands on Championship Titled dogs. We see the need to assist our Trainees gain important knowledge on breeds, and none better than to examine and place these Champions accordingly. Whilst not all owners, breeders and handlers wish to enter their dogs in Open Show classes, the Gold Coast Canine Club Inc is providing our trainee judges with a Champion Sweepstake. This Sweepstake is open to Champions only and runs separately to the Open Show classes. Open Show judges will judge the Champion Sweepstakes in each group first and the winner will compete in the FINAL at the conclusion of the normal Open Show classes. I would ask our Champion dog exhibitors to enter these Sweepstakes and allow our trainees the opportunity to put their hands on breeds that they have not been able to in the past. All winners from each Group compete for Best Exhibit and Runner Up in Champion Sweepstakes. To encourage this new concept Dogs Queensland are awarding $20 to each Champion Sweepstakes Group Winner (Groups 1 - 7). The Overall and Runner Up Winners will also receive a rosette donated by Gold Coast Canine Club Inc. The above awards will be presented at the FINAL of the CHAMPION SWEEPSTAKES to be held in RING 1 at the conclusion of the Open Show. The judge for the FINAL will be advised on the day.
