The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for September 2017 The last month has been a very busy and productive period for our organisation. Many thanks must again go to our hard working volunteers for all their efforts. Office relocation As members would be aware, the office has now relocated from the old Fortitude Valley location into the newly renovated area at Durack. Whilst this was a huge task to perform, the move was done seamlessly and with very little disruption to our usual operations. I would like to thank Rob Harrison and all of the office staff for their efforts in getting everything back up and fully functional, in such a timely and efficient manner. Ekka 2017 The Ekka has again come and gone, and this year’s event was again well received and enjoyed by all who attended. Members would have noticed the new, larger area for the Dogs Queensland booth, which looked exceptional, and was well received by the public at large. A vote of thanks must go to all the volunteers that gave up their time to assist over the duration of the Ekka. Without your continued support, these events and the promotion of our organisation would not be possible. The efforts of the PR, Marketing and Magazine Committee must also be acknowledged and applauded. A huge amount of work is conducted by this Committee before and during the course of the Ekka, and their efforts are greatly appreciated. The Dogs Queensland showbags were a hit again this year, which is always great to see.

All Dogs Sports Spectacular The All Dogs Sports Spectacular continues to grow and has now become one of our organisation’s top events. The public attendance at this year’s event was exceptional, and this only continues to build the reputation and standing of Dogs Queensland. The All Dogs Sports Spectacular continues to promote not only Dogs Queensland , but also the various different types of activities that encompass ‘Dog Sports’. Thanks must go to the small, but very dedicated and hard working Committee that organise and run this event. Volunteer of the year After the success of this initiative last year, we will be shortly launching the 2017 Volunteer of the year. More details will be provided shortly to all Members but please start thinking about your nomination to one of our many worthy and hard working volunteers. Shane Thomas President

The Trade Practices Act came into force on 1st October 1974. Certain provisions of the act relating to consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers of advertisements. In view of the obvious impossibility of our ensuring that advertisements submitted for publication comply with the act, advertisers themselves need to ensure that the provisions of the act are strictly complied with. In cases of doubt, advertisers are advised to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material.

Cyclone and Flood Disaster Assistance All Members are reminded that Dogs Queensland can provide assistance to members who are directly affected by the recent cyclone and flood events throughout Queensland. The relevant document explaining how to apply for assistance can be found on the Dogs Queensland Website.
Show Dates 2019 Dogs Queensland has agreed that a Working Party would be formed to look at all Show Dates and start times for all Conformation Shows including Agricultural Shows, more details including the Working Party’s terms of reference will be provided to all Members shortly. In view of the fact that Show Dates for 2019 are going to be the subject of a review, all Clubs have been asked not to make arrangements for Judges in 2019 at this time as there could be a change in their Show Dates.
Sweepstakes in Zones 2 and 3 Some Country Kennel Clubs have experienced difficulty in conducting Open Shows. There is a need for either Open Shows or Sweepstakes to be held for 'Distance' Trainee Judges. Regional facilitators are now required to conduct 4 Sweepstakes each year – 2 during Part A lectures and 2 during Part B lectures for trainees in their area. These sweepstakes may be for all breeds or just for the Group the trainee is studying. It is suggested that these Sweepstakes be held on 'Cluster Shows' weekends to maximise numbers. Trainees are required to assist the facilitator in arranging these Sweepstakes.

Congratulations to this year’s successful trainees in both the theory and practical examinations and welcome to the next series of Trainee Judges lectures. Once again we remind trainees to be proactive in their learning. Talk to breeders and exhibitors and experienced Judges. Please read the 'Important Dates' and updated Rules and Regulations printed in the September 'Dog World'. It is a good idea to keep this edition of the 'Dog World' for reference. • •

The main updates/changes are listed below. To track trainees’ involvement in their Club activities there is a new 'Club Activity' form which must be completed yearly and included with all applications. Trainees must now complete two assessments for every Group prior to applying for elevation. Trainees are to judge 200 dogs (previously 150) before applying for elevation. Trainees must attend two (previously three) Championship breed specialty Shows and complete 5 critiques at each Show. Once a trainee has been advised that they have passed their elevation to Championship level, they are able to accept and judge that Group immediately.
All Judges are reminded of the need to maintain a high standard of behaviour and ethics at all times, not only when in the judging ring. Please note Rule 9 in the Judges Regulations. Enjoy your judging, Shaneen

Member Vale The Queensland Dog World
IN LOVING MEMORY
Jeanette Woolcock embers would have been saddened to hear of the passing of a member of one of Australia’s famous Dog World families Mrs Jeanette Woolcock, wife of the late Dr David Woolcock. Throughout a 50 year period, Jeanette and David, together with their daughters, bred Australian Terriers under the world renowned Taralee prefix. During this time, Jeanette and David worked quietly and diligently, assisting Clubs in many ways. Each weekend, for decades, Jeanette could be seen Writing or helping in the kitchen at Durack. At Royals, she was the familiar happy face who greeted exhibitors at the entrance before working long hours recording results every day for the RNA. Meanwhile, David played his part as Honorary Veterinarian. In 1994, after David’s untimely passing, Jeanette joined the Executive of The Canine Control Council. While serving on the Committee, she was instrumental in the founding of the Library, raising the necessary funds by running the very popular Cent Auctions. In addition, for 54 years, Jeanette collected the used stamps which came into the Queensland office of our dog world, cutting around them and donating them to Anglican Missions of Australia. Jeanette attended one of Queensland’s premier girls’ schools becoming its School Captain in 1947. The following year she attended University to study Speech Therapy. Her three beautiful daughters, Diana, Lyndall and Rachel, well known to many members of the dog world, also attended the same school and, like their mother before them, followed careers in the caring professions. In later years granddaughter, Sarah, also followed family tradition, becoming a student of St Aidan’s Anglican Girls School. It gave Jeanette great pleasure to tell the school girls about her time there during the war years. Jeanette also had a keen interest in a Garden Club. Another tireless worker for Dogs Queenland, good friend, Helen Acworth had this to say: Jeanette was a highly respected member of Greenpark Garden Club for many years. When we were working together setting up the Library at Durack, Jeanette used to talk a lot about this garden club and when I gave up full time work, I joined her club along with another 'dog world' member, Ann Rohde. Jeanette was as generous to the Garden Club as she was to the dog world, donating many raffle prizes etc.
10 - September 2017
Garden Club activities included monthly bus trips, and on these bus trips we always visited a nursery which Jeanette loved. As I mentioned she was much respected by all Club members and known for her generosity and happy nature. This is what Ann Rohde had to say after her friend’s passing: "I still mourn the loss of such a good and dear friend. Jeanette was such a great Ambassador for the dog world promoting purebred dogs whenever possible. I affectionately called her 'My wise old owl' as whenever I needed advice or just a kind ear to listen, she was there. Her knowledge was limitless but she never forced it upon a person. the dog world is a sadder place for her passing." The following words were found in the July 1994 Dog World: "Jeanette has been involved with the dog world for approximately 35 years. During this time Jeannette has raised a family, managed boarding kennels, performed the administrative functions of a veterinary practice and filled the role of veterinary nurse, attended dog shows, was closely involved with her late husband David in the Breeding and exhibition of Australian Terriers and still found time to maintain a career interest for many years as a speech therapist." The philosophy St Aidan’s Anglican Girls School is to help others wherever one can, without fuss and fanfare, always thinking of others before self. One can’t help thinking that this was always foremost in Mrs Woolcock’s mind, from her School Captain days, all those years ago. Condolences to her girls Diana, Lyndall, Rachel and grandchildren Richard, Stephen, Stuart, Sarah and James and their families. Rest in Peace Mrs. Woolcock.

Judges’ Training and Regulations The Queensland Dog World
Regulations For Judges’ Training Conformation 2017/2018 Self Education Program General 1.
The Rules and Regulations of the CCC (Q) Ltd Judges Training Program (JTP) are amended from time to time; such amendments are published in the Queensland Dog World. These CCC (Q) Ltd Regulations for the Judges Training Program comply with the philosophy of the ANKC Rules but also accommodate necessities required by the diverse nature of metropolitan and regional Queensland. These regulations are effective immediately.
2.
Aspiring judges and all interested members are reminded that membership in the JTP confers no automatic right to become a Judge. Becoming a Judge requires successful completion of the syllabus following which the aspiring Judge must earn the privilege to be registered and acknowledged as a Judge. This privilege may be withdrawn should circumstances warrant and after all facts have been considered.
3.
An essential requirement of acceptance, and also continued progression, in the program (including applications for both theory and practical examinations) is a demonstrated significant and continued participation in the management or operation of an affiliated CCC(Q) Ltd Club. Trainees must complete the “Club Activity“ form each year. This documentation MUST accompany ALL applications; including first time applicants, theory examinations, practical examinations, irrespective of the number of Championship groups a Judge may hold. Applications which do not include this mandatory documentation will be rejected unless appropriately documented reasons for extenuating circumstances are approved by the Conformation Judges Committee (CJC).
4.
Members are not permitted to accept judging appointments or sign contracts to judge, until official written notification from the CCC (Q) Ltd., advising their judging status, has been received by them (see also regulations 4a & 18). a. As from June 2010 candidates will only be granted Open Show status in any Group after they have successfully completed the theory exams for that particular group. Once they have received a letter from CCC (Q) Ltd advising them of their appointment as an Open Show Judge for this Group they may then sign contracts to judge the nominated group immediately. Trainee Judges who had been granted Open Show status prior to 2010 will retain their status on the judging panel. The maximum number of Groups at Open Show level is four.
5.
5
The CCC (Q) Ltd Judges Training Program is available for eligible members of the CCC (Q) Ltd who are residents of Queensland. Queensland residents who were previously members of other ANKC Affiliates, and were previously in an equivalent training program, will be recognised under a reciprocal agreement, provided all requirements are fulfilled.
14 - September 2017
6.
Any persons who were previously resident in another State or Territory, (and members of that State or Territory) and were not in the Judges Training Program, and who are now bona-fide residents of Queensland, may apply to come into the program upon providing a letter from their previous controlling body showing they comply with the entry Requirements for Aspiring Judges.
7.
The Judges Training Program is a continuous program. Persons who are unable to continue in the system through illness, injury or issues of a personal nature, should apply in writing to the CCC(Q) Ltd for leave of absence for a suitable period.
8.
A member who has previously held Championship Judges status may apply for reinstatement. Where the period of absence from the Judges List is four years or more, reinstatement will be considered only after the member concerned has passed 90% of an Open Book examination on a number of the major breeds in the Group(s) plus those Breeds which have been introduced by the ANKC during their absence. In some instances, particularly for longer periods of absence, the CJC may require a practical assessment which would be conducted using similar procedures to the Practical Exam as described in regulations 27 – 32, and at a date to be determined by the CJC. Should the candidate fail the assessment, they would be added to the Open Show Panel and required to judge a further 25 dogs before applying for a standard Practical Exam. Applications for reinstatement are to be approved by the Board of the CCC (Q) Ltd.

19. Reserved 20. Any First Time Applicant who fails the theory examination in their Primary Group must re-attend lectures and re-sit the written examination the following year. If the First Time Applicant fails the examination the fifth time, they will be removed from the Judges Training Program for a period of two years before reapplying.
Stewarding Requirements for all Judges in the Program 21. Starting 1st July and terminating 30th June each year, the following Stewarding requirements must be fulfilled each and every year, irrespective of whether the Trainee / Open Show Judge intends applying for a theory or practical exam. Note: NO dispensation to these Stewarding requirements will be considered. a. Judges with less than 3 Groups at Championship Level must complete a minimum of 12 Queensland appointments (at least 6 as a Ring Steward in All-Breeds Shows, with no more than 3 at Open Shows), or whole of Group Shows (e.g. Toy Dog Club Show), with no more than 3 at Open Shows. The remainder may be either Writing or Assembling, with no more than 3 of these at Open Shows. Judges who are resident in S.E. Queensland must complete at least six (6) appointments within that area. Note: Stewarding for 2 or more Groups at the same Show on the same day is classified as ONE appointment. b. Judges who are resident in S.E. Queenslad must complete at least six (6) appointments within that area. Note: Stewarding for 2 or more Groups at the same Show on the same day is classified as ONE appointment. c.
The Stewarding requirements are to ensure that candidates not only provide valuable assistance with the operation of Shows but also, and more importantly, enable them to observe the judging of Breeds in complete Groups. Consequently the function of Show Manager does not qualify for the aforementioned requirements. It should also be noted that Assembly Stewarding at a Royal Show in Queensland is classified as an “Assembly Steward” not as a “Ring Steward”.
d. For Judges holding 6 Groups at Championship Level, Stewarding is optional. All Breeds Judges may Steward, Write or Show Manage (provided appropriately qualified). e. All Judges in the Judges Training Program must maintain and produce, upon request, an official CCC (Q) Ltd Steward's Card.
16 - September 2017

Note: Failure to comply with ALL aspects of Regulations 11 and 21 may result in removal from the Open Show Judging Panel.
Theory Examinations 22. Each year, a Trainee must attend all breed lectures* and sit for a written paper for that Group (the application to attend lectures is to be submitted before 15th July using the prescribed form available from the CCC(Q) Ltd website). Trainees may only apply for 1 group in any year (October to July); split Groups (i.e. part A for 1 group and part B for a different Group) are not allowed. A Trainee may miss a maximum of 2 lectures, 1 prior to the Part A exam and 1 prior to the Part B exam. If a trainee misses more than this without special written dispensation from the CJC, the trainee will not be eligible to sit for the written examinations. This must be applied for within 14 days of the missed lecture. Any missed lecture requires a 1,000 word essay on the Breeds covered at the lecture and is to be submitted within 14 days of the lecture or by the next scheduled lecture date. Essays are to contain a history and description of the breed, its purpose and all relevant requirements contained in the Breed Standard and are to be illustrated with pictures/drawings. On passing both theory exams (with an overall average of 75% or better), they may apply for a Practical (Hands On) examination in that Group (if sufficient numbers of dogs Judged; see regulation 26) and may apply to attend lectures for an additional Open Show Group. Applications for the practical exam on the prescribed form (available from the CCC (Q) Ltd website) are required NO LATER THAN 15th JULY. * When no lecture and/or no dogs of a Breed are present at a scheduled Breed lecture, Trainees who attend will be required to complete an essay as per the above format. Failure to submit the essays within 14 days of the lecture or by the next scheduled lecture date will render the Trainee ineligible to take an examination until the missed Breed lectures are attended. A trainee must be present for and participate in the entire lecture in order to be credited with attendance. Critiques required following the breed lecture are to be in the hands of the Group Coordinator within 14 days of the lecture or by the next scheduled lecture date. 23. All Trainee Judges who are considered by the CJC to reside a distance from the normal venue for lectures that would pose a travelling risk, are to study
through ‘Distance Education’. i.e. All trainee Judges not attending lectures held at Durack will study by Distance Education. The Distance Education curriculum is available on the CCC (Q) Ltd website under “Judges Training Documents”. Candidates should check regularly for any amendments. Metropolitan trainees may, in special circumstances, be allowed to study by Distance Education. They must apply in writing to the CCC (Q) office, giving their reasons, by the 15th July.

24. a. Trainees must maintain and produce, upon request, an official CCC (Q) Ltd Open Show Judge's Card. This card will be a record of all Open Show Judging appointments and the number of dogs judged. Responsibility of maintaining these records resides solely with the Trainee who is also recommended to maintain a duplicate copy in a secure place. b. Trainees must maintain an Assessment Card. This card is to be signed by 2 different Accredited Championship Judges who have assessed the Trainee while judging each Group on different appointments. One of these assessments must be the first time they judge the full Group. The assessor must have held a Championship licence for the Group they are assessing for a minimum of 5 years. A minimum of two assessments per Group are required for each Group before applying for the practical examination. The candidate is responsible to ensure the assessments are done and recorded. Open Show Assessment forms are available on the CCC (Q) Ltd website. c. The Group Training Coordinators will maintain attendance at all Breed lectures and liaise with the CJC regarding records at progress of candidates. Copies of these records are to be supplied to the CCC (Q) Ltd office. 25. a. All candidates, State-wide, will take the first Theory Examination on the last Tuesday in February. A pass mark of 75% is required. b. All candidates state-wide will take the second Theory Examination on the first Thursday in July. A pass mark of 75% is required. c. Should a candidate fall short of 75% in either paper, then an average will be taken on the two papers. A pass mark of 75% is required. d. Should a candidate not achieve an overall average of 75% or better, any exam failed must be re-sat in the next session for that part of the Group. Trainees may only apply for exams in one group in any year (October to July); split Groups (i.e. part A for one group and part B for a different Group) are not allowed. e. The examination questions will be taken from the current ANKC Breed Standards. f. Each candidate will sign a master sheet, acknowledging receipt of a numbered paper. No assessor will know whose paper they mark. g. NO deferred exams will be given for a candidate who is away for any reason. All dates and times for examinations are set well in advance and hence no excuse will be allowed. In extenuating circumstances such as enforced work commitments, a candidate may make an application to sit the exam at a different location on the same date; such applications will be considered by the CJC. Note: holidays and judging appointments are not extenuating circumstances. h. Candidates who fail a theory examination may request a re-mark of their paper. This request must be made in writing, to the General Manager CCC (Q) Ltd within 14 days of receiving advice of the results of the examination. The re-marking will be done by three members of the CJC (none of whom marked the original paper), who will separately re-mark the paper without conferring. Those re-marking the paper will not know the candidate’s name.

Applications for Practical Examinations 26. a. Once a Trainee Judge has judged a minimum of 200 dogs at Open Show Group level and has attended 2 different Breed Specialty Championship Shows within that Group and has completed 5 written critiques on dogs examined at each event (10 in total), they may apply to take their Practical Examination (1 Group per year) and are recommended to re-attend Breed lectures for that group. Note: You must attend the entire breed Show or a minimum of 50 dogs at that Show. Breeds with different varieties are counted as one breed. e.g. Poodles. The critiques on the 10 dogs examined must be countersigned by an Accredited Judge for that Group present on the day. The CJC would prefer that this was done in conjunction with the Group co-coordinator. Trainers in remote areas who are unable to attend a Specialty in the Group are to submit 10 photos of 10 dogs accompanied by critiques on each of the dogs. These may be obtained from the internet or books. The candidate’s original Assessment Card and Stewarding Card (Regulations 21 & 24b) must accompany the application (the candidate is to retain copies). This examination will take place for all eligible Trainees at Durack on the 34th or 35th weekend of each year; however the date may be varied and will be confirmed each year. A Trainee Judge will only be permitted to elevate to Championship status in 1 Group per year. NB - General Specials numbers at Open Shows are not to be included. Note:- dogs entered in multiple classes at any Show can only be counted once. b. Application for the Practical Examination must be made on the prescribed form (available from the CCC (Q) Ltd website), completing all details. This form must be received NO LATER THAN 15th JULY in any year. Applications may be submitted “subject to passing the part B theory exam”. c. Candidates must have judged the Group, for which application is made, at least four times for at least two different Clubs. 2 specialty Breed Shows each with an entry exceeding 20 dogs exhibited may be counted as 1 of the 4 Groups. It should be noted that candidates must judge at least 3 complete Groups. d. Any candidate who fails a practical examination, must judge another 25 exhibits in that Group to be eligible for re-examination. This can be either a full Group or Specialty Show. e. “Mentoring” Open Show Trainees who are resident Sarina and north may participate in a “mentoring” scheme. Only Accredited Queensland Championship Judges may act as mentors. A Trainee may count dogs examined under the supervision of a Mentor Judge as part of their training. Under this system, Open Show Trainee Judges must judge a minimum of 100 dogs at Open Shows and examine a maximum of 100 dogs under the supervision of a Mentor Judge (a total of 200 dogs.) Any Trainee who participates must not exhibit under that Judge on that day.

It is compulsory for Open Show candidates to attend all Breed Lectures and, although elevation candidates do not have to attend these lectures, it is in their best interest to do so. The following provisional list of dates for metropolitan breed lectures for each Group is contingent upon whether lectures for a particular Group will be conducted in the 2017 / 2018 training season. This decision is dependent upon the number of applications received for each Group and will not be determined until August, and subsequently published in the October or November Dog World. If you require confirmation prior to this publication, please contact the relevant Group Coordinator. Please note: Any trainee not attending the metropolitan lectures at Durack must complete the Distance Education Curriculum. This is available on the Dogs Queensland website under ‘Committees/Conformation Judges/Conformation Judges Documents’. Application for dispensation from any of the rules and regulations contained herein must be submitted in writing, giving reasons, to the Conformation Judges Committee, via the office of Dogs Queensland for possible consideration. Dances with Dogs Written by Coral Pethers here were 31 entries for this 3rd State DWD Competition which showcased an excellent representation of many different breeds including the very popular Border Collie but also some rarer breeds such as the Portuguese Water Dog and the White Swiss Shepherd. There was the little Maltese up to the Weimaraner. The weather was beautiful and the grounds in good condition. The competition was conducted in the Judges Training ring which meant that for most of the competition the ring was in shade which made it even more pleasant for both dogs and handlers. There were two local Judges Mr Trevor Telford and Mrs Maree Field and one visiting Judge from Canberra, Mrs Niccola Hardaker. There were quite a few handlers competing with more than one dog and in more than one class. So, quite a challenge remembering all their various routines. Overall the standard was very good and there were quite a few passes on the day. Lisa Williamson took out the highest scoring Freestyle routine with Cass and highest scoring Heelwork to Music routine with Clover. A big thank you goes to all our sponsors including VIP, Luv ‘Em Treat, Bonnies Dog Training, Doggone Smart Performance Pooches, G. Westmore, D. Lamprecht, J. Christensen, W. Russell, Pine Rivers Dog Training Club, A. Shannon and Indiana Jones. It is our sponsors who ensure that our events are something special. Our trophy table was valued at the amazing amount of $1500. Sapper Seamus Doherty – Royal Australian Engineers Somalia Written by George Hulse
Background
Somalia
apper Seamus Doherty was born and raised in Perth, Western Australia. On 1st March 1988, Seamus enlisted into the Australian Regular Army (ARA). Seamus attended the recruit course at the 1st Recruit Training Battalion at Kapooka, followed by a course at the School of Military Engineering (SME) at Moorebank near Sydney.
The flight went via Singapore to Mogadishu. They arrived by day and saw a myriad of military aircraft operating around the Mogadishu airport. When the 35 sappers from 3 CER were on the ground, a Warrant Officer ordered everybody to “get down” as incoming small arms fire was being received into the airport area. Shots were fired back by the friendly security personnel, and the Captain of the QANTAS Boeing 747 cargo aircraft, got his aircraft out of there as quickly as he possibly could.
He was interested in explosive detection dogs (EDD) when he passed through SME on his initial course and in February 1991, Seamus began his training as an EDD handler. During this period, Seamus was teamed-up with EDD MICK. After graduation, both he and MICK were posted to Townsville. In December 1992, the situation in Somalia had seriously deteriorated, the United States Marine Corps (USMC) had been deployed and the Non Government Organisations (NGO) were experiencing difficulties with the collapse of the government. War lords were traumatising the local population and Somalia was becoming a 'failed state' very quickly. They needed military help to restore law and order and to get the system of aid and administrative services re-established. Australia agreed to send a contingent and mobilised its Operational Deployment Force (ODF) based at Townsville to respond. Seamus and MICK were a part of the ODF.
30 - September 2017
Seamus remembers: ”At the Australian camp in Baidoa we could not see any arrangements for the kennelling of our dogs. Although the dogs had good shade it was very hot during the day where the temperature went into the high 40°C and all the water had to be carried in as bottled water”. The work undertaken by the EDD teams was to support infantry patrols mainly in the town of Baidoa. These patrols of up to Company strength, would spread out through the area and provide extra protection for the international NGO aid agencies in their compounds. In addition, they would activate intelligence reports about the presence of arms and ammunition in the local houses and villages. The infantry would secure the buildings and the EDD teams would search and locate the items of interest. Seamus found it easier not to carry a rifle, and preferred his sidearm (a pistol) for personal protection should he ever need to use it.

Sapper Seamus Doherty and EDD MICK perform a vehicle search at a Vehicle Check Point (VCP). Note the Unimog in the background acting as a 'cut-off'. Somalia 1993. The dogs found a large quantity of arms, ammunition, and explosive ordnance in houses, abandoned buildings and back yard areas. MICK was really good at finding RPG propellant charge packs.
The Cavalry guys wanted a piece of Seamus and his dog, but the infantry guys warned them that if one hand was raised against the sapper or his dog, there was going to be big trouble anytime soon. Seamus and MICK escaped unscathed.
On Australia Day 1993, all troops were invited into 3/4 Cavalry Regiment to receive two cans of beer to help celebrate the Day. EDD MICK’s name was on the nominal roll, so Seamus asked for MICK’s ration of beer along with his own. The Cavalry Warrant Officer (WO) was not amused and asked where the dog was located. Seamus answered that he was back in the dog compound. The WO knocked back MICK’s beer ration on the grounds that he was not present to receive it. Seamus remembered that. On ANZAC Day, the same issue of beer was allowed. This time Seamus took MICK with him. Same WO, same circumstances. The WO refused MICK his two beers. In disgust Seamus left, but in exercising MICK he allowed him to run off lead. MICK found the cavalry monument with its silver ensign of a scorpion, and its decoration for an ANZAC Day memorial service, cocked his leg and urinated all over the silver scorpion. There was an immediate reaction.
The tour of duty went for four and a half months and the Australian dogs were transported to Kenya from Mogadishu. They went from Kenya to the UK where they remained for seven months in quarantine. They travelled back to Australia and spent a further two months in quarantine at Eastern Creek in the Sydney area.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Back in Australia Seamus returned to 3 CER in Townsville and in 1994 left the Army. MICK was re-teamed with Sapper David James who took Mick to Bougainville in The Solomon Islands during the conflict in that area. Photo credits: Supplied by George Hulse

Lance Corporal Brett Charlton Royal Australian Infantry Written by George Hulse
Background ance Corporal (LCpl) Brett Charlton calls Northampton in Western Australia his home town. He joined the Australian Regular Army (ARA) in 1966. His father had served in the RAAF as a bomber pilot during WW II, his uncle had been a sailor in WW II and his grandfather had served in Europe as a soldier in WW I. Not bad military credentials. Brett and his family are from an aboriginal community. In 1968 Brett was trained as a tracker dog handler and then posted to the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR) on that unit’s ramp-up for the war in South Vietnam.

Overseas Service On arrival at the 1 RAR location at Nui Dat, Brett was introduced to his dog, Justin. Justin’s handler was tracker Private Tom Blackhurst (killed in action on his second tour of duty with the Australian Army Training Team). Justin was a Kelpie cross Labrador. Tom on handing over Justin to Brett had to totally ignore the dog so that Brett could bond with him. Brett and Justin bonded quickly which was just as well because three days after arrival in country Brett and Justin were called out for tracking duties. This occurred near the township of Hoa Long where an Australian laid ambush was triggered and there were a number of enemy trails leading away to the west, in the direction of the Long Hai Hills. Brett learned very quickly that Justin was a brilliant tracker. He had an enthusiasm for the job and picked up human scents very quickly. Particularly so, if the scent was Viet Cong (VC).
34 - September 2017
The work for a tracker team was often a short notice affair. The team consisted of a tracker and his dog, a coverman (sometimes trained as a visual tracker) who was armed with a rifle, and a support digger who was often armed with an M60 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG). These three diggers were often called out at night and flown into a contact area. This happened when a night ambush had been triggered and there was strong evidence that some VC soldiers had escaped the ambush but were not far away. One of the humerous slogans used by the trackers was “You lose ‘em, We find ‘em”. Next morning the tracker team would lead off to track down where the VC went.
The Battle of Fire Support Base 'Coral' On 12 May 1968, forward elements of 1 ATF flew into Fire Support Base (FSPB) Coral. The Australians were not able to fully set up and coordinate their defensive location before nightfall and the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) recognising this, took advantage of it.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Member Insight The Queensland Dog World
It should be noted that the NVA were regular soldiers, not the part-time 'shoot and scoot' local VC. In the early hours of 13 May 1968, the NVA attacked the Australians with overwhelming force and overran the 1 RAR Mortar Platoon, temporarily captured their 81mm Mortars, captured the Number Six 105mm Gun/Howitzer from 102 Battery of the Royal Australian Artillery, blew up the ammunition bay of Number One Gun and put loads of pressure on every unit and sub-unit which were in the way of the NVA attacks. By next morning the scene at FSPB Coral was one of devastation, death and clear evidence that a desperate battle had just barely been saved by the Australians. Included in the battle was 161 Battery of the Royal New Zealand Artillery. Also included in the series of battles which commenced on 13 May 1968 were two tracker dog teams. This is the story of Brett and his dog Justin. In Brett’s words: “We flew into the FSPB by helicopter and were ordered to set up next to a small dirt road. Our position had a road drain in it so myself, Justin and my coverman, John Quane, dug in and waited for orders. None came, so we waited. We were located with the HQ of 1 RAR. Then in the early hours of 13 May 1968, all hell broke loose. We heard the NVA attacking with mortars, recoilless rifles, heavy machine guns, unending rifle fire from their AK 47s, the noise of whistles, bugles, shouting and lots of guiding tracer (green) to give them their direction of attack. Our diggers answered with the full force of everything we could possibly hurl at them including support from helicopter gunships and 'Spooky' DC 3 aircraft together some bombing missions from United States Air Force Phantom F4C aircraft. Huge flares turned night into day. The NVA seemed to be everywhere. They appeared to run over and passed us on their way to their own set objectives. It was a very dangerous situation to be in and we were very grateful when first light arrived and some relief came. Poor Justin hated the never ending blasting and booming but remained under my control in the fire pit. The firing of my own rifle didn’t help him much either”.

The battle field was like a scene from a surreal Hollywood set. There were numerous dead NVA soldiers lying on the ground, either singularly or in groups of dead men. Body parts and torn limbs and equipment were scattered over some areas of the battle field. There were still some NVA close to the Australian position and there needed to be a number of clearing patrols mounted to get rid of them. One NVA medium machine gun had opened fire after dawn and this had to be dealt with quickly. A fighting patrol of Australian diggers was formed to attack the area where this machine gun was located. Brett and Justin were assigned to this patrol in case a rapid follow up was needed".

Continued from page 35 "The patrol approached the machine gun area using fire and movement – get up, run a few metres, get down and fire in support of your mates who were up and running forward, and then when they hit the ground, you get up and run and then go down again and repeat the process again and again and again until you overrun the enemy. Justin handled this fire and movement task with zeal. In Brett’s words: “Every time I got up and ran forward, Justin was right there at heel. I would go down and immediately so too would Justin. He seemed to understand the drill, although the noise of it all was not to his liking, but he handled it with resigned acceptance that this is what I wanted, and he just did as he was told”. During this action, there was a moment of repulsion that Brett has tried to erase from his memory, but it is still there. In his words: “Toward the end of the fire and movement, we were told that a United States Army Cobra gunship helicopter had the mission to fire on the NVA machine gun position, and we should go down and hold where we were until after the Cobra mission. The Cobra came and delivered an enormous amount of fire onto the NVA position. I looked at Justin and what I saw made me choke with nausea. Justin had come across a dead NVA corpse and was licking at the sticky ooze which had been blasted out of the dead soldiers head and eyes. I couldn’t believe he would do that. But afterwards when I thought about it, to a dog, something dead on the ground is a free feed. Its just that the thought that it was a human being sickened me. The memory of it still does”. The NVA attacked 1 ATF positions numerous times after that initial assault, but did not succeed in their bid to destroy the Australian forces both at FSPB Coral and its neighbouring position FSPB Balmoral. Justin really did not need a free feed. His combat rations weren’t bad. Dog food looked like a hamburger patty and came in a twenty litre drum. The dogs loved them and Brett confesses that surplus dog 'hamburgers' were sometimes eaten by the handler. Brett reckons that they tasted better than some of the human United States Army combat rations. In 1978 Brett who had by now been promoted to Corporal, came to the end of his time with the Army. He worked on construction plant and equipment from then until he retired. He now lives in Northampton in Western Australia. Photo credits: Supplied by George Hulse
