The All Dogs Sports Spectacular has fast become one of our organisation’s top events. The public attendance at this year’s event was exceptional, and this continues to build the reputation and standing of Dogs Queensland. The All Dogs Sports Spectacular continues to promote not only Dogs Queensland, but also the various different types of activities that encompass ‘Dog Sports’. Thanks must go to the small, but very dedicated and hard working committee that organise and run this event. This event was a personal passion of Norma Zimmerle’s, and I’m sure she would have been very proud of this year’s turn out.
Ekka 2018 The Ekka is over for another year. This year’s event was again well received and enjoyed by all who attended. Many members noticed the correspondence from the RNA about the new pavilion area which will be constructed and ready for use for next year. The new building will provide one central benching area, instead of three different locations. The judging ring will be located in a custom marquee and will enable the exhibitors to show their dogs on real turf. There will also be improved direct access to the judging rings, eliminating the current need to cross over in public area. The Dogs Queensland booth once again looked exceptional and was well received by the public at large. A vote of thanks must go to all the volunteers that gave up there time to assist over the duration of the Ekka. Without your continued support, these events and the promotion of our organisation, would not be possible. The efforts of the PR, Marketing and Magazine Committee must also be acknowledged and applauded. The Dogs Queensland showbags were again very popular with the general public.
State Junior Handler final The Queensland State Junior Handler final was held on Sunday the 19th of August. Congratulations to the winners from each age category. These were: • • •
7 years to under 10 years – Samantha Page 10 years to under 13 years – Ella Campbell 13 years to under 19 years – Shonaya Bottriell
Congratulations also to the overall winner, and State representative for 2018 Shonaya Bottriell. Shonaya will now compete in the National final to be held in Adelaide in September, with the overall winner of this event travelling to Crufts to represent Australia. We wish Shonaya the best of luck in the upcoming National finals. Thanks must also go to the hard working Junior Handler committee for once again running a excellent state event.
Dog and Puppy of the Year One of the biggest events in the Dogs Queensland calendar will take place in October. I am of course referring to the Queensland Dog and Puppy of the Year competition. The committee has been working very hard to give the members yet another standout event. This year, the entire event will be conducted at Durack. The event will take place on Saturday the 20th of October, commencing at 3:00pm with the preliminary rounds for Puppy followed by Dog of the Year preliminary rounds. It is envisaged the final of Puppy of the Year will commence at 7:00pm, followed by the final of Dog of the Year. Further details and times will be announced by the committee very soon. Shane Thomas, President

Dog of the Year and Puppy of the Year 2018 Chairmans Message
A Message from the Chairman Tim Thomas Chairman Email: tim_at_ochaye@hotmail.com
Important Message: Qualifying letters will be sent out by the Dogs Queensland Office, to all eligible exhibits shortly. For all those exhibitors wishing to compete in the 2018 Puppy and Dog of the Year Finals, please note that the FINAL date for acceptance will be COB (5:00pm) on Tuesday 2nd October. NO LATE ENTRIES will be accepted. In 2018, there is a reduced entry fee of $25 per qualifier for both the Puppy of the Year and Dog of the Year Competitions. 2018 will be the 6th year that this Committee has had the opportunity of running the prestigious Puppy and Dog of the Year Finals. Once again, we have taken on board your feedback (both good and bad). The Puppy / Dog of the Year Event is a work in progress and it will continue to be amended and improved each year. The following description is aimed at giving everyone a little insight into the 2018 event. The entire event this year will be held at the Durack Showgrounds on Saturday 20th October. This year we have appointed 4 International and 2 Interstate Judges. PRELIMINARY ROUNDS: The preliminary rounds for both the Puppy and Dog of the Year Event will be held on Saturday 20th October, commencing at 3:00pm with the Puppy competition. This will be followed by the preliminary rounds for Dog of the Year. This year, each competition will be divided into 8 rounds with each round being judged by only ONE International Judge (chosen at random). The number of dogs in each round will depend on the number of qualifiers entered in each competition. The International judge will pick 2 finalists from each round. The remaining dogs from each of the 8 rounds will then proceed to another ring and compete for a further two spots in the final under an Interstate Judge. The top 4 dogs in each of the 8 rounds then proceed through to the “Top 32 Round”. On Saturday evening, commencing at approximately 7:00pm, the “Top 32 Puppies” followed by the “Top 32 Adults” will then compete in a knock out competition for the ultimate prize. The Judges will be swapped on Saturday evening so that those who judged a “Puppy of the Year” elimination rounds earlier in the afternoon will only be judging the Adult competition on the Saturday night.

Judges
Dress and Attire
The Judges this year are from Australia, India, China, Belarus and Uzbekistan.
As stated, our theme for this year’s event is “TRUE BLUE” – so come dressed in your best Aussie attire (within reason, of course). Our judges will be encouraged to dress “Aussie” too.
Sponsors In 2018, the Dog of the Year Committee has been fortunate enough, to again be supported by a number of MAJOR SPONSORS. This year, our Sponsors include: •
CCrates;
•
Dogszonline, Show Manager and Agenor Kennels
•

I will be promoting these wonderfully generous organisations throughout the coming months and at all of our events throughout 2018 and 2019. I therefore strongly encourage anyone from within our Dog-world fraternity, who can give our Sponsors patronage, to do so. Without them, it would be very difficult to run an event of this calibre. Their support is so greatly appreciated!
Sunday (10:00am) All Breeds Show ALL DOGS are eligible to compete at both of these Shows – regardless of whether or not they qualified for the Friday or Saturday night events. In other words, the two All Breeds Shows are regular, All Breeds Championship Shows. The schedule has been posted and, as always, this show can be entered via Show Manager. Please note, that as a courtesy to other Exhibitors, the WINNER and RUNNER UP at both the Puppy of the Year and Dog of the Year Finals will be asked not to compete at the Sunday All Breeds Show. ............................................................................. I hope this covers most of the questions or concerns that people may have at this stage. Please remember, that this event can only continue with your ongoing support, so please get behind us with your support. I hope to see you on the night, Timothy Thomas
Ringside Seating, Catering and Theme
Chairperson: Dog of the Year
Unlike previous years, there will be no formal dog of the year dinner. It is envisaged that there will be a canteen operating from 3:00pm and details of this will be announced closer to the event. Similar to previous years, the likelihood is that hot and cold platters will be able to be pre-purchased before the night. Alternatively, you can bring your own food and make a party of it. The committee have a theme for this year’s event – it is “TRUE BLUE” (that is, anything Australian). There will also be an opportunity to secure a great ringside spot by renting a 3x3 gazebo spot. Obviously, these spots will be limited and will be sold on a “first in best dressed” situation.

Unique bonds with Dogs Health
8
How do you know when is the best time to let go of your family pet? By Dr Gerry King I am sure you all have seen the 'Red Dog' movie which showed the great bond between a dog and its owner. It is often this bond that overrides rational thinking on our behalf to prolong the life of an animal which has a poor quality of life. I have become very familiar with owners telling me that we look after our dogs better than humans, especially when people die a slow painful death from incurable cancer. This is particularly true for people who have recently lost a loved one through cancer. Clients will often ring in the next few days after their pet has been euthanized when they are less emotional, and indicate that they should have done it sooner. For people without this experience emotions can delay the appropriate decision.
9
Unique bonds with Dogs Health People are often unsure of the euthanasia process and feel that it is a painful process, which often delays the right decision for their loved one. We are all acutely aware of the current debate over euthanasia in humans. Countries like Switzerland and Holland have euthanasia programs for people who have terminal /debilitating illness. These countries are regarded as the leaders in humanitarian issues. What this article will try and achieve is to help people in the decision process, hopefully reduce emotional distress, and decide when it is best to euthanase.
So when is the best time to decide what is best for your beloved pet? There are several key areas which we need to address before making a decision.
A Quality of life • • • •
Is your pet still able to greet you after an absence? Does it show pleasure with your company? Is it incontinent? Does it still enjoy its usual pleasurable activities?
Quality-of-life assessments have long been used within human end-of-life care, and similar tools for assessing our animals are increasingly available, well-refined and imminently useful. One nice example is the veterinarian Alice Villalobos’s “Pawspice” program, which directs pet owners to assess their pet on a 1-to-10 scale on seven measures — hurt, hunger, hydration, hygiene, happiness, mobility and “more good days than bad” — with the lowest number being the worst. This website enables you to fill out a questionnaire and when a certain score is achieved euthanasia is recommended:
www.journeyspet.com/quality-of-life-scale-pets/ The attached link is a Queensland company run by Dr M. O’ Donoghue who offers counselling to people who have had their animals euthanazed, and who are prepared to offer guidance when an owner is seeking advice on what to do:
www.petsandpeople.com.au
10
B Painful conditions B) Old dogs, just like humans, suffer from arthritic conditions which result in reduced activity, depression and withdrawal from interacting with their owners. These conditions are made more manageable now with both non opioid and opioid pain killers, nutritional supplements, acupuncture and of course new stem cell technology.
C) C Terminal illness When your pet has been diagnosed with a terminal illness the issue becomes more acute, and this is where your veterinarian will assist you with the decision-making process. It’s important that you and your vet develop a good working relationship that addresses both your needs and that of your beloved pet. These illnesses include: • • •
Inoperable cancer. Renal failure Liver failure
Most vets have done grief management courses and will often guide the owner in making the best decision about their pet. Palliative care knowledge has developed into a specialized field in human medicine. Likewise vets have access to a plethora of modern pain relieving medicines and antidepressants that can make the last few days of your pets life more pleasant en route to the big kennel in the sky.
Euthanasia process: It’s very important that the owner be present, comforting their pet, and let their beloved pet see their owners face near them comforting them. It’s important to recognize that each situation is different. Some animals in pain and in their owner’s arms can be quite aggressive. Mild sedation can help, or possibly taking the animal away from the owner to catherise your pet in a back room. Owners should request a home visit if they prefer this method. Handled professionally your pet in your arms they will slip into unconsciousness within a few seconds after the drugs are administered.
Conclusion:
Emotions can cause serious errors of judgement when dedicating the best time to let go of their beloved across the rainbow bridge.
Emotions can cause serious errors of judgement when dedicating the best time to let go of their beloved across the rainbow bridge. Owners should seek advice from their vets, and complete the attached questionnaires to arrive at an objective decision. We must understand that animals cannot understand or choose for themselves. They look to you for everything.

A Focus on Dog Sports The 2018 Commonwealth Games
The Team
Agility, Rally & Obedience Skills
PutPut to to the theTest Test for the 2018 Commonwealth Games Written by Rachel Bullock
he Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 were a success and brought to the attention of the world, the City of the Gold Coast and the Sunshine State of Queensland. The success of the games was contributed to by the willingness and generosity of 15,000 volunteers, seven of these volunteers are members of Dogs Queensland and all are active in a wide variety of Dog Sports and members of clubs across the South East of Queensland. Representing Jimboomba Dog Training Club, Logan All Breeds Club and Gold Coast Dog Obedience Training Club.*
12
Agility Judges Laura Schimke and Rachel Bulloch, Trainee Tracking Judge Julie McCombe, Agility Sub Committee Member Jenny Wood, Christine Donaldson agility competitor and junior hander advocate, Jay Bailey Obedience and Rally-O competitor and Cassie Barrass a new comer to Agility. This group of dog sports enthusiasts decided to give their time to the Commonwealth Games and have found that some of their dog training skills have come in handy! Putting to good use their combined skills and training and competing in a range of dog sports this group of willing volunteers have herded spectators to their seats, maneuvered Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 vehicles through road blocks and motor ways to get officials and athletes to their appointments, tracked down lost items and people and lured and encouraged visitors to the Gold Coast to enjoy the competition. Being members of Dogs Queensland and competing regularly the team know what it is like to be under pressure but also know that at the end of the day everyone who competed would go home knowing they had done their very best.
Jay and Borobi
This group of dog sports enthusiasts decided to give their time to the Commonwealth Games and have found that some of their dog training skills have come in handy! Jenny, Laura, Rachel and Christine were all members of the Fleet TX team, this involved being available to a wide range of officials and athletes from the whole of the Commonwealth to take them from venues, meetings and accommodation. This role gave the team the opportunity to meet with people from across the globe some of the countries were, Pakistan, St Lucia, Grenade, Barbados, South Africa, New Zealand, England, Scotland and Wales and of course Australia.
13
A Focus on Dog Sports The 2018 Commonwealth Games Jenny Wood was lucky enough to meet Rhys McClenaghan from Northern Ireland and take him back to the Athletes Village after he won Gold in the Pommel Horse. Rachel drove two High Commissioners and the Presidents of St Lucia and Gredada to the Beach Volley Ball. Jay Bailey was also a driver but drove for specific guests her first special visitor was Baroness Scotland who is the first woman to hold the position of Commonwealth Secretary-General. Jay was required to drive only for this very special guest and wait while she attended numerous meetings with heads of state and many of the events around the coast. Julie McCombe was not only in spectator services at the Coomera venue which hosted Gymnastics and Netball, Julie was also a team leader. Being a team leader required Julie to use her organisational skills, also put to good use as Trial Secretary for All Breeds Tracking Club. Julie had a great time checking tickets, helping spectators to seats, providing information and being the friendly face of the games.
Being a member of this team, this experience has brought about a more enhanced friendship for our group. This event has been a great volunteer experience and proud to share with these wonderful women.
Over 6,000 people visited the centre for each competition session, Julie saw her mission was to ensure everyone had the best Commonwealth Games experience possible. The youngest of the team is Cassie Barrass from Jimboomba Dog Training Club, where she has been a family member with her mum Karen. An active member of the club and always first into the agility ring to help with course and height changes, Cassie was a natural to be picked as a volunteer. Again using her great personality and a few skills picked up training her Kelpie Xena, Cassie was stationed at Robina for the Rugby Sevens in Spectator Services. The team were asked to nominate which sports their dogs would enter in the Commonwealth Games;
Jenny Wood and Rhys McClenaghan
Jenny suggested her Border Collies Kai and Ricki would be in the diving as they love Jetty Jumping. Julie’s Vislas Ranger, Tarki and Vandor would do well in the wrestling. Track and Field athletics featured highly with Laura’s German Shepherd Dog in the marathon, Cassie thought that Xena would love the sprint. Rachel’s Border Collies Phoebe (would be a great match for any of the hurdlers) and Blu (would be up for the steeple chase). Christine’s White Shepherd although having the same name as the fastest man on earth, Bolt, is more your swimmer.
Rachel and the Queen's Batton
14
Laura
The team not only worked the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 but also spectated at a number of events Hockey, Swimming, Cycling, Shooting and Athletics.
In addition, all Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 volunteers were given the opportunity to watch the dress rehearsals of the opening ceremony. There were also many photo opportunities with athletes, mascots, VIPS and the Queen’s Baton. The currency of the Commonwealth Games was pins so collecting them from the various countries was very special and receiving them as thank you presents from our customers and also from the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 organisers, the spinning Borobi was a firm favourite. Being a member of this team , this experience has brought about a more enhanced friendship for our group. This event has been a great volunteer experience and proud to share with these wonderful women. *Please note: there were also Volunteers at the Commonwealth Games who were not members of the aforementioned clubs who are also members of Dogs Queensland

Unique bonds with Dogs Support
Jason and Archie, a Man and His Dog Written by Sharon Bamford This is no ordinary story of a man and his dog, this is the story of a man and his dedication to the dog that will be the closest he will ever have to having a child of his own. It doesn’t matter that his “fur child” is a black Labrador. Jason has Cerebral Palsy Quadriplegia and is totally reliant on others for his day to day life. his dedication and commitment started 8 years ago when Archie was donated to Jason to help him to grow as a man, have a responsibility of his own and to ideally become his assistance dog. The thinking behind this was that people with severe disabilities are totally reliant on others for every aspect of their lives and that they very rarely are capable of taking on any responsibilities of their own. Sharon and Jason wanted to prove this thinking wrong. With Archie coming into Jason’s life this changed his whole world. From the very beginning Jason became this black dog’s life and Archie became Jason’s. Jason named him Archie and went to live with the family from 8 weeks of age. From this day forward Archie went everywhere with Jason, slept with him and became his constant companion. With the guidance of Archie’s breeder, trainer and lifelong friend, Sharon Bamford, Archie learnt how best to assist Jason.
18
19
Unique bonds with Dogs Support There were tasks that Archie instinctively started to do when he needed to for Jason, without much training at all, for example waking Jason when suffering bouts of sleep apnoea and getting his mum, (carer), when needed. Jason took Archie to obedience classes at Ipswich Dog Obedience Club, to teach him the basics for having manners and being obedient then followed up with “target training”. These involved picking items up from the ground or a table when Jason couldn’t and placing them on Jason’s tray, pressing buttons which led to turning on lights and getting help when he needed to. It was important for Jason to have this special bond with Archie and be responsible for his wellbeing. Jason needs to ensure Archie is kept well and healthy, determining when his vet visits are and to keep them up to date, washed and kept clean on a regular basis and mentally stimulated as well. Archie is allowed to be a “dog” when he is not working, playing with the other dog in the family, Penny, and going to “boot camp” to do no specific work other than to play with other dogs and have some rest and relaxation.
From the very beginning Jason became this black dog’s life and Archie became Jason’s
20
The bond these two share, became no more obvious than recently, at the beginning of the year, Archie started having trouble walking. He became very unsteady on his legs. This was a very trying time for the family. The following passages are from their involvement with the Animal Referral Hospital – Brisbane.
Animal Referral Hospital Brisbane April 6 ·
Rosewood Veterinary Service
"Behind the surgery: Jason and Archie’s story" Man’s best friend doesn’t begin to sum up the relationship between Jason and Archie. As a canine helper, Archie is more like Jason’s third arm. He fetches items, turns on lights and opens doors. But it’s the bond they share that is the most beautiful part of this story...when you see them together it is clear that their happiness is completely intertwined. So, when Jason noticed that Archie was overly clingy, wouldn’t jump out of bed and was unsteady on his feet he went straight to see his local vet, who referred him to ARH specialist surgeon, Dr Lance Wilson. Dr Lance diagnosed Archie with a large bulging disc in his neck, otherwise known as Disc Associated Wobbler Syndrome. He performed the complex decompression and stabilisation surgery, removing the disc and replacing it with a plate, screws and bone cement. And Jason waited nervously. The surgery went well and three days later Archie was sent home to recover. He required confinement for eight weeks after his surgery, so Jason moved into his lounge room and slept on a futon next to Archie. Jason and Archie came to visit recently for his recheck and Dr Lance was able to give him a full bill of health. When we asked him how he felt seeing Archie walking so well, his smile said it all... This is why I became a surgeon.” Archie now has a second lease on life, thanks to the Animal Referral Hospital and Dr Lance, displaying no adverse reaction from his major surgery. He has resumed his life as Jason’s constant companion and is his healthy, happy “fur child”.
