LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER This holiday issue is chock full of good ideas for you and your furry children. Our calendar of events, informs you of a number of places that you and your pet can enjoy together during this festive time of the year. Marie Crabb’s article features eateries that are pet friendly around San Antonio. Dr. Peterson cautions us on holiday dangers for pets as well as distinguishing between what is myth and fact. As we head into winter, Lauren Severns, who is completing her work externship at the SAHS, advises us on how to prepare your dogs and cats for the upcoming cold weather. The Hill Country may not get snow, but we do have a couple chilly months ahead of us. While we are in the holiday spirit, please keep in mind there are numerous rescue and non-profit organizations around our city (see listing on page 31 and full listing on our website) that do an amazing job at helping the pets in need. Any donation you can make, can change that pet’s life “fur”ever. Thank You & Wishing you a Very Merry Holiday Season and a wonderful 2016! Sincerely,

petfriendlyrestaurants

S

an Antonio has become quite the foodie hotspot in recent years with much of the culinary revolution happening near downtown, Broadway & the Pearl Brewery– energizing previously stagnant areas of real estate. The influx of new condo and apartment buildings & remodeling of fixer-uppers has attracted many pet parents to these areas, and where there are pet parents there must be pet friendly neighborhood restaurants. Here’s our first list of some great hometown culinary spots where the food & drinks are interesting & our fur babies are welcome.

COLD TREATS, ICE-CREAM & PALETAS: SA POPS, 3420 N ST MARY’S ST Owned and operated by local Chef Andrew Gutierrez, this homemade ice cream shop offers uniquely flavored treats that bring back the ‘ol San Antonio nostalgia of buying ice cream from the neighborhood ice-cream truck. Some of their unique flavors include: pistachio dipped in chocolate, Mexican chocolate, roasted banana, pecan & pink lemonade. People and pet friendly - so feel free to pop in for a Popsicle with your pooch and sit on the patio (say that 3x times fast). COFFEE & GOURMET BRUNCH GRUB: THE FAIRVIEW, 3428 N ST MARY’S ST Resident Coffee artists, John & Whitney Sanchez, are bringing passion and quality to our daily caffeine fix in a retro & friendly atmosphere. The folks at The Fairview possess knowledge of their coffee products & truly pride themselves on the artisanal quality of what they create. Some highlights of their menu include: “El Chingon” (a Horchata & Espresso iced infusion), the Chai (homebrewed from spices & sweetened with Texas raw honey), along with exotically flavored waffles, breads & muffins. Patrons & their pups are invited to enjoy coffee on their patio. BY MARIE CRABB

CRAFT COCKTAILS: TBA BAR, 2801 N ST MARY'S ST This unpretentious craft cocktail bar has quickly become a neighborhood fixture in the N St Mary’s area. San Antonio native, Chef James Moore, has established an atmosphere of artistic cocktails like the “Juan Collins”, “Rye n’ Gosling” & the ode to the recently gentrified SoFlo district downtown – the 8

“South Flores”, with low key, grilled cheese sandwiches to snack on. Chef James routinely takes his rescue dog to the bar and welcomes patrons to bring their pups to relax on the patio as well.

COMING SOON : AMERICAN FOOD & CRAFT COCKTAILS: GRAYZE, 521 E GRAYSON ST This new kid on the block near the Pearl will be offering American casual fare with a chef twist, craft cocktails, craft beers & homemade soda. Grayze is the first restaurant by Center Cut Concepts, a restaurant group made up of local Chefs & entrepreneurs and is slated to be a less expensive alternative to the restaurants at the Pearl Brewery. The restaurant will be extremely pet friendly with house made gourmet dog biscuits, large front and back patios where you can hang out with your pooch, a water bowl brought for each outdoor table with a furry visitor & green space for your pups to stretch their legs. Marie Crabb is a San Antonio native and animal rescue advocate with 8 furkids of her own, plus numerous rescue fosters. She is a Realtor with Exquisite Properties, has a Master’s Degree in International Relations from St. Mary’s University and is a trained Mediator.

about our

covermodels BY CORTNIE PEDRAZA & KARIS GROVE

R

eddy is a 2 yr old Border Collie rescue with a unique coat and equally unique personality! While Reddy is a pure bred, he was adopted to a family that didn't have the time, patience or knowledge of how to handle the energy of a high drive puppy! In his first year of life he REDDY didn't get the chance to socialize with other dogs and people, and was given up to a rescue. After he was juggled through multiple foster homes, his mom, Cortnie, came to visit another dog at the rescue. When she locked eyes with Reddy though, she knew they were meant to be! By then he was 1 year old and he was nervous with outsiders and had no control over his energy. She knew how to build his confidence and help him be a happy, loving dog that he is today. He LOVES swimming and playing with his dog friends. Reddy enjoys having a job to do and is so smart that he now teaches other dogs how to play well with others and gets to go to work with Cortnie every day. His confidence shines through to ev-

eryone he meets and he loves to give hugs to his human friends if they ask for one. His best friend in the whole world, besides Cortnie, is his feline friend, Jinx! Those two wrestle and play till bedtime and Reddy wouldn't have it any other way. He has a happy life full of love. Reddy’s owner, Cortnie Pedraza, is a trainer for Sit Means Sit Austin. PIP Pip is a 1-1/2 year old Shitzu / Poodle puppy. She got him at 14 weeks old to be the final and 5th addition to her family. For a little dog he has a lot of spunk and character. He was raised by his older brother, a Belgian Malinios, and acts like a big dog 100% of the time. Pip loves to do tricks and learn but, one of his favorite things is to dig underwater to find buried rocks or sticks. He will out run any big dog he gets the chance to or cuddle in your lap all day. Pip has been an amazing addition to the Groves pack and he gets to show people everyday how little dogs CAN be trained and enjoy it. Pip’s owner, Karis Grove, is a trainer for Sit Means Sit San Antonio.

ntolerance to food is a fairly common condition in dogs and cats. It occurs because the pet’s immune system reacts adversely to either an ingredient that is in the food or the products that are created once the gastrointestinal tract has begun digestion of the food. Often, the offending ingredient is a protein. While some breeds of dogs have a documented sensitivity to wheat, gluten sensitivity is very rare in dogs and cats. Usually, the adverse reactions affect the gastrointestinal system, the skin or both.

holidaydangersforpets TRUTH VS MYTH

1. Despite warnings from family veterinarians and experts in the media, many pet owners are still unsure about what is, and is not safe for their pets during the holiday season. 2. Most species of lilies, including tiger, Asiatic, stargazer, day and Easter lilies are deadly to cats. In some cases, a small amount of pollen or even one leaf can cause sudden kidney failure. 3. Christmas cactus and Christmas (English) holly can cause significant damage to the stomach and GI tract of dogs and cats. Death is not usually reported, but it’s best to keep these plants out of reach. 4. Liquid potpourris can cause chemical burns to the mouths of pets. Cats appear to be more sensitive, but fevers, respiratory difficulty and tremors can be seen in both dogs and cats. 5. The most dangerous foods at this time of year are: chocolates and cocoa, sugarless gum/candies containing Xylitol®, fatty meat scraps and yeast bread dough.

BY DR. JAMES PETERSON

6. Some common holiday myths include the dangers of Poinsettias. These plants are not as toxic as urban legend describes. The sticky white sap can be an irritant to mouth parts or skin, but serious poisonings are almost unknown.

20

7. Another myth is that mistletoe is toxic. American mistletoe (the kind we use for Christmas parties) is not very toxic, generally causing mild stomach upset. Its cousin, European mistletoe is more toxic and causes more problems. 8. This often derided gift – Fruit Cake - is actually quite dangerous to our pets. Grapes, raisins and currants are common ingredients and these have been implicated in kidney failure in dogs. 9. Also, many fruit cakes have been soaked in rum or other alcohols making it doubly dangerous to pets.

Alcohol is rapidly absorbed into the pet’s bloodstream causing drops in blood sugar, blood pressure and body temperature. 10) Finally, many people think Christmas decorations are generally safe. Unfortunately, some pets, especially cats, are attracted to long, string like objects, including garland, tinsel and ribbons. Although the decorations are not poisonous, they can be ingested and that is where they can cause serious problems. 11. These “linear (or string) foreign bodies” can get stuck in the pet’s stomach or intestines and slowly saw through the tissue causing a potentially fatal infection of the abdomen. Surgery is the only treatment. 12. Play it safe with your pets this holiday season. Keep dangerous items out of reach, secure trash cans and do a “pet proofing” walk through of your home. While decorations are out, try your best to either keep an eye on your pets, or keep them kenneled to prevent exposure to these festive, yet potentially dangerous things. 13. If you have any questions about the potential dan gers of holiday plants, decorations or foods, contact your veterinary office for answers. Dr. James Peterson is a 1992 graduate of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. He began his career in Emergency Veterinary Medicine in San Antonio, and has practiced both Emergency and Small Animal Medicine in San Antonio for over 20 years. He is currently a director of Mission Pet Emergency in Northwest San Antonio and owns Hill Country Animal Hospital & The Palms Pet Resort in Helotes, TX.

t’s that time of year again, when cold winter weather makes its appearance! Temperatures will begin to drop close to freezing and below in the coming weeks. Here are 10 cold weather tips for outdoor cats and dogs, big and small:

1. CATS AND CARS DON’T MIX! Knock on the hood of your car a few times before starting the engine. Honking the horn is also a good way to give them a warning. Cats find the warm engine compartments of vehicles cozy and inviting during cold weather. They don’t know how deadly it can be! Between the belts, fans, and other moving parts, the engine compartELLIE ment is very dangerous for cats. 2. WHERE DID MY WATER GO? Check your pets’ water bowls a couple times a day to make sure there is not a layer of ice keeping them from having a drink. If the temperature stays at or below freezing long enough, an entire bowl of water can turn into a solid block of ice! Your pet needs access to fresh water at all times, no matter the weather. 3. “WIND FROM THE NORTH, DON’T GO FORTH.” Face the opening of your pets’ shelter south. Winter winds tend to be from the north and northeast. This will help keep the wind at their back and their shelter a little warmer. Many smart phones have a compass app to help show which direction you’re facing if there isn’t a strong wind to tell you. 4. IF THE WEATHER OUTSIDE IS FRIGHTFUL… When temperatures reach freezing (32°F) and below, your outdoor pets should be invited inside until the temperature rises above freezing. Very young and older cats and dogs have an especially difficult time staying warm even in an adequate outdoor shelter. A little nook in the garage or laundry room will suffice and be greatly appreciated! 5. NOT SO HAPPY FEET. We probably won’t have to worry about snow in the Alamo City, but if you’re traveling with your dog(s) where there will be snow, consider purchasing them dog booties. Well-fitted booties will help protect their feet from the cold of the snow and any hidden dangers underneath that would’ve been waiting for bare paws. 6. CLEAN AS A WHISTLE AND DRY AS A BONE. All bedding for your cats and dogs should be clean and dry. Make sure the bedding is thick enough for them to burrow and nestle to stay as warm as possible. 7. IT MAY BE COLDER THAN IT SEEMS! The ambient temperature may be above freezing, but if there is any wind, there is a wind chill factor to consider. Sometimes the wind chill can be as much as

10 degrees colder than the ambient temperature. Your pets should be allowed inside when the wind chill factor is at or below freezing. 8. WINTER WARRIOR DRESS CODE. Few breeds have built-in winter-proof coats like Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes. If your dog has a short, fair-weather coat, give them a winter coat of their very own! JULIET Dog coats and sweaters come in all sizes and fashions. Be sure it fits them well and stays dry. A wet coat will actually make your dog colder! 9. BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES! We all know how quickly Texas weather can change from one minute to the next. Check the weather forecast frequently and before going to bed. This will ensure your pets will be prepared and comfortable before a new cold front arrives, especially overnight. 10. FROSTY FERALS. Are there any community cats in your neighborhood? They need shelter from the cold too! There are many inexpensive and creative ways to give them a roof over their head without them being inside your house. Offering them something as simple as a Styrofoam ice chest with an opening cut out of one side filled with towels or blankets will be quite inviting! Who knew an ice chest would be responsible for keeping something warm for a change? Keeping your outdoor cats and dogs warm and protected from the elements during the winter months is key. If you have any questions or concerns about your pets’ health and comfort, please contact your veterinarian. Our pets make us feel warm and fuzzy, they deserve to feel the same way! Lauren Severns is a fourth year veterinary student from Texas A&M University completing a four week externship at the San Antonio Humane Society. She is a San Antonio native and plans to practice shelter medicine upon receiving her D.V.M. She loves the company of her cat “Derby” and Mustang “Diego,” both rescues.

t's a Brand New Day at HSNBA! We are saving more homeless animals than ever at the Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area! Serving about 4,000 animals per year, we help strays brought in by the City of New Braunfels Animal Control and the Animal Control Officers of Comal County. Returning lost animals to their owners is our first priority and then we focus on finding homes for the animals that are truly without caregivers.

We do this with partnerships with local rescue groups and the dedicated foster homes and volunteers in our community. Thanks to a ground breaking collaboration with the Comal County Medical Veterinary Association, we are now able to spay and neuter and vaccinate against rabies all animals leaving our shelter through adoption! We stress that adopting a pet from HSNBA actually saves TWO lives – the pet you take home AND the spot you leave to let us save another animal. Q: We are considering getting a live Christmas tree for the first time this year. My dog likes to chew on things though. Is it dangerous if he were to chew on the tree? A: There are some oils from the bark and the needles of Christmas trees that could cause a mild toxicity. Those oils can also irritate the tissue of the mouth and intestines. Therefore, it is a good idea to limit your pet’s access to the Christmas tree when you are not around to watch them. Also, keep pets away from the base of the tree if it is sitting in water. Some trees are treated with pesticides and fertilizers that can get into the water making it unsafe for pets to drink. If you add aspirin to the tree water

to preserve the tree, do not let your pet drink from that water. High doses of aspirin in pets can be toxic. Q: What would be the best Christmas treat that we could share with our dog that is safest to give her? A: There are many Christmas treats out on the market now. Most importantly, make sure to choose treats that are made in the USA. An alternative to buying premade treats is to make your own that way you know what’s going into them. And remember, when giving treats, don’t give too many. The calories from treats can add up fast and result in weight gain. makingadifference for pets!

BY TRACI GOMEZ

T

he holiday season can be a wonderful time when we all come together with family and friends, and focus on fellowship and service to others including those without a voice…defenseless, homeless, and abandoned pets.

Thanks to folks like you who cannot stand by and let animals suffer, we are able to provide the resources necessary to respond to animals that have nowhere else to turn. With the help of our donors, we rescue and heal over 4,000 abandoned, abused, and neglected dogs JOSEPHINE and cats in our community and then find them amazing new families. While we celebrate this great achievement, we also give thanks for the great people who’ve helped to make it happen. One of the largest challenges facing animal welfare organizations today is the sheer number of animals in need of assistance. At the San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS), we too are forced to stretch our resources to the brink to accommodate an overwhelming population of homeless and at-risk animals. During the holiday season, especially in an ailing economy, companion animals are hit particularly hard when their owners feel that they can no longer afford to feed them or keep them due to foreclosures or loss of income. And many of these animals end up in shelters, already under many financial pressures themselves. With resources stretched thin, local no-kill shelters, like the SAHS, will always benefit from additional funds; something that you can definitely help with if you are willing to take action. We’d love to count YOU among our friends, too! Your holiday gift will help provide safe shelter, spay/ neuter services, and lifesaving medical care to the dogs and cats in our care. Working behind the scenes, staff and volunteers will turn your generosity into loving, lifesaving care for each and every animal who comes through our doors.

We are a local, nonprofit organization. Your donation will go to work to help animals in need right here in our community. The SAHS receives no state or federal funding and the relationships we have with the people in our community — amazing individuFLOWER als like you — are vital to our lifesaving work. We can’t do this alone. At the heart of it, we’re all just human beings. And we would prefer to be regarded for who we are and relate as human beings, rather than just for the specific thing that we can give you right now. Today's the perfect day to give to the San Antonio Humane Society! Why? Your gift will ensure we have the resources to care for every animal, providing them with shelter, medical treatments, and behavior programs as we prepare them for adoption. Please join us! On behalf of the pets who will be served by your generosity this holiday season, we sincerely thank you. Friends like you make a real, meaningful difference. Your gift saves lives. Learn more at SAhumane.org/donate. Traci Gomez is the Director of Development at the San Antonio Humane Society. She supervises the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of all contributions and gifts and the general oversight of fund raising for the SAHS.

They All Said I was Crazy for Getting a Pet Door, but Now I Have No Worries! BY JOHN MOYA

W

hen I first started talking about getting a pet door, friends and family all said I was crazy. “Think of the animals you will be letting in! Think of the thieves that will have easy access to your home. You will not be able to sleep at night knowing that someone could crawl in and do very bad things to you or your family!” Between 3:30 AM and 5:00 AM, I could count on being licked in the face with the sound of whimpering in the background. Sebastian, my Golden, was telling me something…. he needed to go out! Being woken up from a good dream like this was not the way I wanted to spend the rest of Sebastian’s life. Sebastian was left inside in the nice comforts of my home while I was away at work. At that time, I worked at the airport and the daily commute was 35 minutes to my doorstep. This was before all the traffic lights and development on US 281. Upon arrival from work, he would run me over on his way to relieve himself. At times, I would find out that something did not agree with his stomach. An expensive call to Stanley Steamers usually occurred afterwards. {December 2015}

I received a phone call at work, “Sebastian ate the carpet—the whole carpet!” I can’t believe that I lived like this for years. I replaced door jambs from him scratching at the door wanting out. I replaced carpet due to his destruction. I have caught him in Kitty’s litter box (Yuck!). I have tried crating him only to give in to his whimpering. The loss of sleep was the last straw! Something had to be done! installed one of the best (if not the best) pet doors on the market that had dual security features and the maximum energy efficiency of any pet door on the market. Sleeping until I had to wake up for work was the biggest satisfaction that I got from it. Even Kitty got a pet door. Her litter box was moved to an empty closet and the poop eating contest was over for Sebastian. I never got an animal in the house that wasn’t supposed to be there. I didn’t have to rush home from work to see if there was a gift waiting for me to clean up. A would be thief would also have to think twice prior to entering. Judging from the pet door size, a German Shepard, Pit Bull, or a Rottweiler could be waiting. My friend’s and family’s concerns never occurred. If these events sound familiar, and you would like to stop the worries and stress over your pets, you may receive free information on the type of pet door that I installed. You may contact us directly at 210-464-8953 or by email at john@alamodogdoors.com. Some of your neighbors may alreadybe satisfied customers and I am sure that they would speak highly of their pet door and our installation services.
