f your New Year’s resolution is to exercise more, then consider including your dog in your routine. Just like humans, dogs need daily exercise to stay fit and healthy—no matter their age or breed.

lives a sedentary lifestyle, you shouldn’t take them on a five-mile run the first day. In this case, Eckman said to start slow and gradually work a few minutes of exercise into their routine each day. “This is where tailoring the exercise to the pet and their individual needs is best,” Eckman said. Exercising can also benefit dogs that are prone to arthritis, hip dysplasia, or other health conditions that can affect mobility. Although it may seem that rest is better for dogs that have joint stiffness or soreness, exercising can actually help relieve this discomfort. “To alleviate pain, regular exercise, weight management, and veterinarian-prescribed medications are key in these pets,” Eckman said. “You may also rethink your exercise routine for these dogs. Instead of running or walking, try activities such as swimming to reduce impact and help keep their joints moving.” “Senior” dogs love to exercise and play, too. In fact, Eckman said keeping senior pets active is a good way to prolong their overall health and wellness. Sticking to a New Year’s resolution can be “ruff,” but finding time to exercise with your dog will promote a stronger bond and an overall healthier lifestyle. But before you begin an exercise routine for your dog, remember to have them evaluated by a veterinarian. Now get outside and get moving!

If your New Year’s resolution is to exercise more, then consider including your dog in your routine. Just like humans, dogs need daily exercise to stay fit and healthy—no matter their age or breed. Dr. Stacy Eckman, clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, offered some insight on exercise programs for dogs. “Unless their health prohibits it, all dogs need some form of daily exercise,” Eckman said. “However, the amount of exercise depends on the dog’s breed and age. For example, high-energy and working dogs require regular exercise to stimulate them mentally and keep them from getting bored. Other breeds may only require exercise to maintain or achieve a healthy weight and lifestyle.” In other words, a puppy or younger dog will probably have more energy than an older dog, and a Chihuahua probably won’t be able to walk the same distance as a Border Collie. Before beginning any sort of exercise routine, Eckman recommends having your dog’s veterinarian evaluate its health condition. “Work with your veterinarian to develop a diet and exercise program that is tailored for your pet,” Eckman said. For example, if your pet currently is overweight or

e all know the rules; we should not feed our pets table scraps. Human foods such as grapes, raisins, and chocolate are known toxins. Our pets also chew on things that are not necessarily edible and certainly don’t ask our permission first. Plants are a prime example. While most plant ingestion will cause only minor gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, diarrhea, or a decreased appetite, some plants can prove fatal. Many times these toxins are in our homes simply because we don’t know they are dangerous; highlighted below are two common and potentially deadly plant toxins.
Lilies Lily toxicity only causes significant illness in cats and most commonly occurs around holidays when the flowers are used for decoration. Common lilies include Stargazers, Day Lilies, and Easter Lilies, but any variety of lilies should be considered toxic. All parts of the flower are toxic, with the flowers being the most dangerous. The stem and leaves are often chewed on and pollen is often transferred to the fur and subsequently groomed off. Initial signs of lily toxicity include vomiting, lethargy, and a decreased appetite due to damage and death of a part of the kidneys, known as the proximal tubule. This damage results in a rapid onset of kidney failure and ultimately death. Early treatment often has a good outcome, but any delay in treatment can result in irreversible kidney damage. It is important to have any cat exposed to lilies evaluated by a veterinarian and it is not recommended to keep lilies in or around a home with cats.

Sago Palms Sago palms are a very common plant in our area used primarily for landscaping but also available in smaller forms for decoration. Sago palms are considered toxic to most animals, but dogs more commonly ingest the plant than cats. Of the different varieties of palm trees, only the cycad palms are toxic. As with lilies, all parts of the sago are toxic. The seeds contain the highest concentration of toxin and are also the more commonly ingested part of the plant. Initial signs

of sago palm toxicity include vomiting and diarrhea due to non-specific gastrointestinal upset. These signs occur within hours of ingestion and generally resolve within 24 hours. The signs often recur in the days following ingestion and are due to significant destruction of the liver. Unfortunately, pets in this stage of illness have a very poor prognosis and the toxicity is very often fatal. Any suspected exposure to sago palm should be investigated. Early decontamination and treatment is often very successful but any delay can prove deadly. Our pets are our family and to see them sick because of an unknown toxin in our home is heartbreaking. If you have questions about a new plant, cleaning chemical, pesticide, or other item that your pets may be exposed to, please contact your veterinarian. We love to keep them healthy! If you suspect your pet may have gotten into something toxic, be sure get them to a veterinarian as quickly as possible!

Q: I am constantly struggling with keeping my dog Spunky, who is a Lab and 7 years old in good weight. However, he seems to keep gaining weight and is about 3-4 pounds overweight. He is on the Sr. Diet and I give him minimum treats. Any other suggestions or any other reasons you think why he cannot keep the weight off? —Jennifer A: YWeight gain can be a problem for many dogs, especially at middle age. First, a full exam and lab work (to include thyroid) by your veterinarian will rule out any underlying diseases. If okay, your veterinarian will discuss exercise and an appropriate diet (consider Metabolic Diet by Science Diet). You didn’t mention if there are any orthopedic conditions like hip dysplasia that could limit more exercise and weight loss. You should be able to work down the weight in a normal dog over 3.5 months safely.
Q. With Cedar Allergies in full swing, my Mixed breed dog seems to be feeling the effects. What are the best things I can give her or do you suggest taking her into the vet for a blood workup? —Monica A: Allergies are very common in our pets; you referenced cedar as one of them. Without testing we don’t know for sure what allergens the pet is susceptible to. Sometimes symptoms are associated with a certain period or season or symptoms can be food related. Antihistamines are generally ineffective, though we have had some luck with Zyrtec. Fatty acids are important, using them would be wise. Changing our environment or where we live is unlikely, bathing the pet weekly can help control allergens on the skin.

Your dog needs exercise! •
All dogs need plenty of exercise. If they don’t get it, they will develop bad habits such as chewing on furniture, socks and shoes, or dig up flowerbeds. They may even get depressed, and become really mischievous and unreliable.

Spending 30 minutes to an hour walking to the park with a dog walker, although better than nothing, doesn’t provide much exercise for a pooch, and receiving a picture of where your baby pooped may make you feel better, but it doesn’t do much for your dog.
