contributors LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER This March we once again deal with the most difficult aspect of per ownership, the last stage of pet life. We dread the time when we must say goodbye to our furry family members. This month we feature two pictorial spreads. One showcases our senior, spunky furry companions of San Antonio. Our other is a collage of those pets that have recently crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge. Kelly Grady, of the San Antonio Humane Society, explains to us how important it is for people to consider senior pets when they are deciding about adding a pet to their family. Remember to dress your furry children in green for St. Patty’s day March 17th.

et Loss At Home is a network of mobile veterinarians focused on end-of-life care for pets in the comfort of their own home. We simply started with the request from an older lady stating, "I just want to be in the comfort of home for the end of my cat's life. She does not travel, I can't drive at night if I needed help, and she has only known 'home' her whole life." From that point, Pet Loss At Home has grown to encompass a network across the U.S. with our first compassionate veterinarian beginning in San Antonio.
Pet Loss At Home - Texas has a team of vets covering San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and the entire Dallas - Fort Worth area 8am 8pm, 7 days a week. We know it's one of the most difficult times to help your pet since your pet does not want you to see their "signs of suffering" and their "quality of life" declining. Observing and keeping an accurate record of your pet in their daily activities can help you to decide. By talking or emailing with our veterinarians on staff, you can receive a 'free' opinion and guidance. There is no simple answer and once medicine cannot assist any longer, euthanasia in the home can be a solution. Your furry friend is cherished by the family. Our Team at Pet Loss At Home takes a difficult situation and helps to give
a better solution. Please allow us to help if you or if you know of someone's pet facing end-of-life and assistance is needed. Dr. Phil Whisnand was raised in and practiced veterinary medicine in west Texas for many years and moved to central Texas (San Antonio) to be near family. After meeting Dr. Karen & Rob Twyning and hearing about Pet Loss At Home, Dr. Whisnand realized this needed service was something special. Through Pet Loss At Home, Dr. Whisnand now offers pet owners direct support and understanding during difficult endof-life decisions, and does so with great sensitivity.

L
ast year, the San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS) adopted out 4,898 dogs and cats. Of these pets, 2,950 were puppies; only 151 were senior pets.
{March 2020}
Unfortunately, he has several conditions that have been left untreated for most of his life, including severe dry eye in both eyes, bad skin, and an ear canal that has almost completely sealed itself off due to years of swelling and infection. All of these conditions result in quite a bit of pain. “Dozer is a great example of why veterinary care early on in a pet’s life is so important. For example, if his ear infections had been treated appropriately in their early stages, then we probably wouldn’t have to be performing surgery to essentially remove his ear canal,” explains Dr. Hopes. Fortunately, Dozer’s prognosis is good - with treatment, he’ll go on to live the rest of his life in comfort. Although he’s already considered a senior pet, we know he has a lot of love left to give his forever family. “We hope adopters will start considering senior pets just as much as they consider puppies,” says Grady. “Dogs like Dozer really do make amazing family members.”
BY KELLY GRADY, DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE, SAHS
“Most people are looking for cute, cuddly puppies,” says Aaron Grady, Director of Operations. “What people don’t realize is that these cute, cuddly puppies are a lot of work – they need to be housebroken, cratetrained, basically taught how to behave when living in a house with a family. Unfortunately, many people find this to be too much work, and often these puppies are returned around the time they turn a year old. We don’t see that high-volume of return with older pets.” What is the difference? According to Grady, “You know what you’re getting with a senior pet. They already have a developed personality, and a lot of the time, they’ve been house-trained. There aren’t a lot of surprises with a senior pet.” Dozer, a 9-year-old English Bulldog, is no exception. “He is a really sweet guy,” says Lead Volunteer, Mike Wilson. “He likes to ‘mosey’ around the courtyard, but mostly, he likes to nap. What you see is what you get with Dozer.” Upon meeting Dozer, however, you would never know how much discomfort he’s in on a daily basis.

WITH DR. KIRBY OF ALAMO HEIGHTS PET CLINIC Q: My Golden Lab is 12 years old and doesn't respond to stimuli as before. How can I tell the difference between doggie dementia and simple hearing and vision loss? –Thanks A: Dementia usually involves the symptoms of deafness, blindness, lethargy, circling and/ or uncontrolled excitement in the evenings. Differentiating deafness and blindness from dementia is something that can be easily determined by your veterinarian. Q. My dog has been acting normally in all regards except one. He has been throwing up two or three
times a week recently. What should I do? –Thank You A: Vomiting on a regular basis can be a food allergy, overeating, or gastrointestinal disease. I suggest an exam by your veterinarian to make sure that your pet is not losing weight. The veterinarian can also check your pet’s stools and evaluate the food you are feeding. Bloodwork and radiographs (x-rays) are sometimes needed in order to evaluate the intestine. Dr. Kirby graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&M with a degree in Biomedical Science in 1979 and earned his DVM in 1984. Dr. Kirby has been the owner and director of Alamo Heights Pet Clinic since 1997. His veterinary interests are surgery, internal medicine, ultrasonography, and rehabilitation therapy. He uses both a conventional and a holistic approach to medicine. Dr. Kirby treats dogs, cats, birds and exotics. Alamo Heights Pet Clinic: (210) 821-5544. Please email all questions for Dr. Kirby to Dana. texasdogsandcats@gmail.com.

Your dog needs exercise! •
All dogs need plenty of exercise. If they don’t get it, they will develop bad habits such as chewing on furniture, socks and shoes, or dig up flowerbeds. They may even get depressed, and become really mischievous and unreliable.
•
Spending 30 minutes to an hour walking to the park with a dog walker, although better than nothing, doesn’t provide much exercise for a pooch, and receiving a picture of where your baby pooped may make you feel better, but it doesn’t do much for your dog.
Introducing Pet Galaxy’s Doggieland® Daycare and Door to Door Service •
For roughly the same money you would spend on 30 minutes for a dog walker’s time, we will pick up your fur-babies from your home in the morning, transport them to Pet Galaxy’s large Doggieland® play park for the entire day, where they can enjoy the park and play with compatible, like-minded dogs. Once they have experienced enough play, they will come inside for an all-important nap before they go back out for more fun again. At the end of the day, we will bring your happy and satisfied babies back home.
•
Prices start at $24.75 for all day daycare plus $5.00 each way for the bus ticket — flat rate. Our initial target areas are primarily neighborhoods north of Loop 1604 along the Hwy 281 corridor, including Stone Oak, Encino, Canyon Springs, Timberwood Park, Johnson Ranch and Bulverde/Spring Branch.
•
On request — for an extra charge, we can even serve lunch and/or dinner, administer medications, provide Bath, Brush and Nails service and/or a full groom.
•
And, of course, if needed — your pet is always welcome to spend the night (or longer stays) with us.
