LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER For all of you senior pet parents, this issue addresses your concerns about aging furry children. Dr. Peterson writes about the issues that our pets face during their journey into old age and what methods to take in order to accommodate their special needs. Veronica Araiza, of the San Antonio Humane Society, illustrates the benefits of adopting an older companion in her informative article this month. We broach the topic of end of life with our salute to those pets that have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. We thank Dr. Phil Whisnand for his advice on how to handle your pets final phase of life with comfort and dignity. Marie Crabb contributes to this month’s edition with a timely article highlighting some of the popular pet parks in San Antonio. popularSAparks FOR
PEOPLE
PETS
With 185 city of San Antonio parks to choose from, which are the best pet friendly parks? Here’s a run-down of the most popular parks for pet and people enjoyment.
PHIL HARDBERGER PARK One of the newer parks in San Antonio, Hardberger has it all: 311 acres of green space and 3.64 miles of trails (paved and unpaved), two separate sides of the park, both of which have separately fenced small and large dog parks (a total of 3.3 acres), a two-story dog house in the little dog area, dog fountains (and people fountains), a massive playscape for the human kiddos, basketball courts, wide open fields and a beautiful learning center in the middle of the park that offers Nature Education classes. All of this in one park. There’s no wonder why this is one of the most popular parks in San Antonio right now.
MCALLISTER PARK A whopping 15 mile trail and a separately fenced dog park makes McAllister a great place to enjoy outdoor time with your pooch. This park offers a number of amenities: 4 different lengths of walking trails (paved and
unpaved), covered pavilions, b-b-q stations and expansive playing fields. Most importantly, it has a 1.5 acre fenced dog park equipped with doggie fire hydrants, water fountains and exercise equipment. With the many positives, one common complaint about McAllister Park: not enough owners scooping poop. TOM SLICK DOG PARK Tom Slick has an entire acre of fenced doggie play space for your pup to enjoy. There are separate small and large dog areas and another separate fenced dog area, which helps to ease the nervousness many dog owners feel when taking their pups out to dog parks. Great amenities at this park include benches and picnic tables, people fountains, pet fountains, a pond and it’s very own doggie shower. (Yes, a doggie shower) With all the great aspects to consider, in any park where there are other dogs, you run the risk of dog interactions going bad. Some dogs will have no social skills or will just be flat out aggressive, which affects the response of your dog in those situations or could even affect your dog’s safety. Exercise caution always, but ultimately have fun exploring our city’s great parks with your family. Marie Crabb is a San Antonio native and animal rescue advocate with 8 furkids of her own, plus numerous rescue fosters. She is a Realtor with Exquisite Properties, has a Master’s Degree in International Relations from St. Mary’s University and is a trained Mediator.
BY MARIE CRABB
BRACKENRIDGE PARK An oldie but goodie in San Antonio, Brackenridge is an overall great place for your pups to come along for a family gathering. This historic park offers a 2.8 mile trail, views and access to the San Antonio river (from which you can fish), pavilions that can be reserved, plenty of picnic tables and b-b-q stations for you and your family to enjoy and the many fields and open spaces where you can enjoy a game of [insert your favorite outdoor game here]. Although there is not a separately fenced, dedicated dog park area, Brackenridge offers many other bonus features we can enjoy with our furry loved ones. The beautiful tree-heavy landscape offers top notch coverage from the heat, there’s live water, paved walking trails, not to mention the great people watching, and different sights, smells and sounds to peak your pup’s interest.

et Loss At Home is a network of mobile veterinarians focused on end-of-life care for pets in the comfort of their own home. We simply started with the request from an older lady stating, "I just want to be in the comfort of home for the end of my cat's life. She does not travel, I can't drive at night if I needed help, and she has only known 'home' her whole life." From that point, Pet Loss At Home has grown to encompass a network across the U.S. with our first compassionate veterinarian beginning in San Antonio.
BY PHILIP WHISNAND, DVM
Pet Loss At Home - Texas has a team of vets covering San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and the entire Dallas - Fort Worth area 8am 8pm, 7 days a week. We know it's one of the most difficult times to help your pet since your pet does not want you to see their "signs of suffering" and their "quality of life" declining. Observing and keeping an accurate record of your pet in their daily activities can help you to decide. By talking or emailing with our veterinarians on staff, you can receive a 'free' opinion and guidance. There is no simple answer and once medicine cannot assist any longer, euthanasia in the home can be a solution. Your furry friend is cherished by the family. Our Team at Pet Loss At Home takes a difficult situation and helps to give

a better solution. Please allow us to help if you or if you know of someone's pet facing end-of-life and assistance is needed. Dr. Phil Whisnand was raised in and practiced veterinary medicine in west Texas for many years and moved to central Texas (San Antonio) to be near family. After meeting Dr. Karen & Rob Twyning and hearing about Pet Loss At Home, Dr. Whisnand realized this needed service was something special. Through Pet Loss At Home, Dr. Whisnand now offers pet owners direct support and understanding during difficult endof-life decisions, and does so with great sensitivity.

This sweet Poodle, now called "WILLOW", was found wandering down the middle of the street in a subdivision located in Canyon Lake. One of the Canyon Lake Animal Shelter's, (C.L.A.S.S.), volunteers and her 12 year old daughter were driving home when she was spotted. Willow seemed to know they were there to help as she ran to the daughter and was then immediately taken to C.L.A.S.S., which is a very compassionate no-kill shelter. She was flea infested and so matted she could barely walk. After much TLC, including a professional groom by Kim Moore, one of Pet Galaxy's professional groomers, this beautiful 8 year old is ready to go to her new home with a family that fell in love with her. I
t was a rainy day back in 2013 when I saw a little black dog, wet and cold, in my neighbors yard. I called her over and she had a small patch of mange on her head and looked hungry. I opened my garage, gave her food, water and a bed for a few days waiting to see if any one came looking for her. I left the garage open during the day so she could come and go and after 3 days of staying, I took her to my sisters, who is also my veterinarian-Dr. Lori Stephens, of Friendship Pet Hospital and Wellness Center.
BY ASHLEY HARMEYER & KIMBERLY STEPHENS
We got her shots, treated her mange and began to discuss finding her a new home. Lori knew Ashley and thought she would reach out to her. Well, it all worked out, Ashely took her in and gave her an amazing home and the rest is history!! Olive has adjusted really well to her new life with us. When we first got her she was very shy and timid, but now she knows that she is the princess of the house. She has an amazing brother Odie, also pictured, whom she adores and tries to be like. Odie is a ham, and lights up in front of the camera. He quickly showed Olive what a great life was all about! He shares his toys, romps around the backyard with her and introduced her to all the dogs at the Palm’s Pet Resort and Spa doggie day care.
Now Olive has blossomed into a very energetic, fun, and loving dog. She also has two friends that she frequently plays with named Bindi and Maggie next door. Olive has also recently started the journey to become a therapy dog, and finished the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. Odie and Olive are wearing accessories made by Paw Print Styles, which can be found online at pawprintstyles.com or at the Palms Pet Resort & Spa, located at 12410 Bandera Road @ Loop 1604 in Helotes, (210) 695-1166. ABOUT OUR HUMAN MODEL Dylan is a 2nd Grader who loves animals and has an Italian Greyhound named Marco Polo that he takes care of. He is an avid gamer who loves to play video games and has even created his own server.

ammary tumors are most commonly found in intact female dogs and are rarely found in male dogs and cats. The most common dog breeds that are affected by mammary tumors are poodles, dachshunds, and spaniels. The most common cat breeds are Siamese and other Oriental breeds, as well as Domestic Shorthairs. Mammary tumors are more common in female dogs that are either not spayed or were spayed after 2 years of age.

P
ets are living longer thanks to advances in veterinary care, diagnostics, and earlier intervention. But the key to enjoying our “senior ” pets lies not only in extending their life span, but in helping them enjoy their later years to the fullest.
Like people, dogs and cats are prone to debilitating ailments as they age. Kidney failure, heart disease, arthritis, dental disease, cancer, and cognitive dysfunction can occur during the normal aging process. In the past, because many diseases weren’t diagnosed until advanced stages, veterinarians could do little more than make a pet’s golden years a little more comfortable by treating the symptoms of age-related illness. But thanks to technical advancements in modern veterinary medicine, surgery, diagnostics and nutrition, not only do pets live longer but their quality of life has increased dramatically as well. Many age related problems are still seen as inevitable, but the attitudes of both veterinarians and pet owners have changed. The belief now is that “age is not a disease”, and veterinary medicine is putting increased emphasis on senior pet health through preventative wellness programs. We now have greater knowledge, improved diagnostics, and better therapeutics, all of which mean we can effectively prevent or manage many senior health care issues. The single most important step a pet owner can take to keep their pet happy and healthy as long as possible is to schedule regular veterinary exams. As pets age, these exams are more important than ever, because as with people, early detection is crucial for disease and problem intervention. Young pets need regular exams once or twice yearly. But as dogs and cats approach middle age, these exams should be more frequent because every year in a pet’s life is equivalent to 5-7 human years. Veterinarians recommend regular lab work, blood pressure monitoring, and x-rays to look for early problems like thyroid, kidney, heart, and liver disease. With early detection, pets with organ function prob-
lems can be treated with medication and special prescription diets that not only extend their life span, but also the quality of their lives. In some cases, medical problems can even be reversed. In general, some early warning signs that your pet may be having a problem are: • increased thirst and urination • loss of bladder control or breaking house training • repeated vomiting • bad breath, drooling or changes in appetite • excessive panting or exercise intolerance • lumps or changes in areas of skin color • change in appetite - eating more or less than usual • unusual bowel habits - diarrhea or constipation • changes in body weight - gaining or losing weight Watch pets closely and report any unusual behavioral or physical problems to your veterinarian immediately. Work with your veterinarian and develop a specific senior wellness program for your pet’s individual needs so that your special friend can enjoy aging gracefully. Dr. James Peterson is a 1992 graduate of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. He began his career in Emergency Veterinary Medicine in San Antonio, and has practiced both Emergency and Small Animal Medicine in San Antonio for over 20 years. He is currently a director of Mission Pet Emergency in Northwest San Antonio and owns Hill Country Animal Hospital & The Palms Pet Resort in Helotes, TX.

Q: "I have a Great Dane that walks me. Is there a special leash or technique I can use to help get him to follow as we take walks? He is always pulling and dragging me. Help. " A: This is actually a common problem and can occur with any breed, but when it happens with a larger breed like Great Danes, it can be a major headache (and SHOULDER-ache!). You can try a harness that allows you to clip the leash in front of your dog's chest, or a head halter (which usually requires careful conditioning for your dog to tolerate) to help you maintain a bit more control; however, special equipment like this really only helps you manage the problem rather than to fix it altogether. To teach your Dane to follow you, change direction any time he walks in front of you. Go the opposite direction than he is pulling. Any time he passes you to be in front, change direction. Practice first inside your house or yard before expecting him to be able to stay with you in more distracting settings. Consult a local dog trainer if you need more hands-on help teaching your Great Dane to stop causing you great pain! Q: "Wondering how I can train my 3 yr old Boxer from jumping on the glass door everytime she wants
in? We adopted her a year ago & she never used to do this & now it has become a daily event!" A: Oh no - your clever boxer has trained YOU! At some point, it sounds like she tried jumping on the glass door and the result was that someone let her back inside. The difficulty is that if you keep opening the door and letting her in, she is going to continue to jump on the door - because it WORKS!! Jumping on the door is great from her perspective; it gets your attention VERY quickly. So: if your glass door can take it, do not EVER acknowledge her or let her in until she stops jumping and goes to do something else. Ask her to sit before coming in until you invite her to re-enter the house. Another option could be to teach her a new cue to get you to let her in - like ringing a bell to come inside, rather than jumping up on the glass. Many folks teach their pups to ring a bell to go outside; this idea would work just as well as a request to be let back inside the house.

avid and Hubble have a lot in common. They both enjoy wide open spaces to frolic and explore, they’ll both come bounding towards you for a little bit of attention, and they both enjoy cuddle time and a gentle belly rub. However, there is one major difference between these two pooches: Hubble’s chances of adoption are exceptionally higher than David’s. This is due primarily to age; at 10 years old, David is considered a “senior pet” and his age has stigmatized him, and other senior pets like him, to remain in shelters longer. Hubble, a mere few months of age, will have a greater chance of being adopted within just a few days of her residency.
As much as we love and care for the cats and dogs that come into our shelter, our greatest joy comes from their union with their forever family. So when a lovable dog like David finds himself spending a year within our walls, it’s HUBBLE not the kind of anniversary we usually celebrate. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of stigma attached to senior pets within shelters. Even the age-old adage “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” has some negative connotation attached to it. But many senior pets choose to not “act their age” and, just the same, many senior pets act their age just fine (thank you very much!).
BY VERONICA ARAIZA
POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF ADOPTING A SENIOR PET: • Household Manners: Potty and litterbox etiquette is generally locked down (thank goodness!), and some older pooches you encounter may already know a few commands such as “sit” or “wait.” Also, it’s good to keep in mind that many older pets are just as cognitively able to learn new commands as the younger pups. Don’t count them out of the game just yet! • Personality Match: In the same way you might peruse a dating website looking for the right match, not every pet (young or old) you meet is going to be “the one.” Not all households are 20
ready or willing to house the rambunctious misbehavings of a new puppy. For those households that would prefer a quiet lap buddy or laidback lounger, adopting a senior pet is your best bet. Similar to the way many senior citizens feel 20 when DAVID their coming on 60, the senior pet population comprises of a variety of temperaments and are going to act just as good as they feel. It’s unfair to look at a number on a demographic sheet and expect it to define an animal. Although you may think a senior pet’s “best years” are far behind them, to them their best years live on with you in a loving and attentive home. Don’t judge a pet by their graying whiskers or muzzle, and definitely don’t judge them by a number. Veronica Araiza is the Communication Associate for the San Antonio Humane Society. eet Dan Greenhouse, founder of Texas Dogs & Cats San Antonio and avid pet lover. More importantly meet Dan Greenhouse, husband to Barbara, father to Dana and grandfather to Dylan and Lilly. Like so many, Dan is in dire need of a kidney donor. Without one, there is no hope. Dan has spent his entire life taking care of his family and friends. His warmth and generosity touches the lives of everyone he meets. There is nothing he would not give to help better the lives of the people around him, but now it is Dan who needs our help. It is a terrible thing to sit and watch your family try to go about their lives knowing that soon they could be without your love, your guidance, your wisdom. To have your children, fur children and grandchildren cry in your arms,
not wanting to let you go, is a burden that over 100,000 families who are in desperate need of an organ transplant face every single day. The waiting list for a deceased organ donor is so long (approximately 8 years) that most families are left to fend for themselves in their search for finding a living donor; for finding a hero. While it is no small thing, the donation of a kidney is much scarier in thought than reality. There are thousands of successful living donor kidney transplants performed every single year. Giving the gift of life is the greatest gift any person can give or receive. If you would like to find out more about being a potential match for Dan or someone else like him please contact him at kidneyfordan@yahoo. com or give him a call at 630-220-2911.

Q: My Golden Lab is 12 years old and doesn't respond to stimuli as before. How can I tell the difference between doggie dementia and simple hearing and vision loss? –Thanks
ing up two or three times a week recently. What should I do? –Thank You A: Vomiting on a regular basis can be a food allergy, overeating, or gastrointestinal disease. I suggest an exam by your veterinarian to make sure that your pet is not losing weight. The veterinarian can also check your pet’s stools and evaluate the food you are feeding. Bloodwork and radiographs (x-rays) are sometimes needed in order to evaluate the intestine.
A: Dementia usually involves the symptoms of deafness, blindness, lethargy, circling and/or uncontrolled excitement in the evenings. Differentiating deafness and blindness from dementia is something that can be easily determined by your veterinarian.
