How A Local Car Company Is Helping Horses Help Children. What if… you were a business that wanted to make your corporate giving program more meaningful? What if… you were a recent college graduate with a dream of using horses to help those with disabilities? What if the collaboration sparked synergy that continues to positively impact the lives of many across San Antonio? This perfect scenario came to fruition last fall, when North Park Subaru at Dominion was searching for a “Hometown Charity” to add to its “Share the Love” campaign. Customers who lease or buy a Subaru were allowed to select one of four charities to which the car dealership would donate $250 on their behalf. Stephen Markham, General Manager at North Park Subaru at Dominion, providentially heard of Open T.R.A.I.L. Ranch, a therapeutic riding facility and scheduled a personal visit with Kate Vasquez, founder, executive director and instructor. He was so impressed with her work, and that of the other three instructors and physical therapists, he selected Open T.R.A.I.L. Ranch as the dealership’s local beneficiary. The employees at North Park Subaru at Dominion passionately promoted Open T.R.A.I.L. to their customers, which led to a donation of $42,000 for the ranch. “It is the biggest donation we have ever received, and the first donation from a company,” Kate said. “We were speechless a group would believe in us so much to do that for us and our riders.” And the relationship between the ministry and the dealership continues. North Park Subaru at Dominion employee groups invest “sweat equity” on Open T.R.A.I.L workdays, clearing additional trails on the 100-plus acre land on 28710 Boerne Stage Road just 10 minutes from La Cantera. “It is incredible to see them, not just at their dealership vouching for us, but on their off-time coming out. They are completely invested in our riders and with our rescue horses,” Kate added. Open T.R.A.I.L. (which stands for Therapeutic Riding Actively Improving Lives) currently serves 60 riders weekly, with 12 horses. Funds from North Park Subaru at Dominion are building a new barn with additional equine stalls. Most of the ranch’s horses are rescued from an abusive or neglectful situation or were headed to the slaughterhouse. These rehabilitated horses, “give so much and differently once they realize they are no longer in danger,” Kate said, and are the perfect compliment to her riders, many of whom have come from similar situations or who have behavioral or psychological problems. “The horses have their own stories we can share with the kids,” she added, which is especially helpful for those in Equine Assisted Learning Therapy. A horse is a mirror image, she explained, which helps participants recognize and give voice to their emotions. The horse can advocate how the participant is feeling. “If they are angry, the horse will walk away; if they are anxious, the horse will show that emotion, too,” she said. “A lot (of participants) are foster kids or those who have had trauma, autism spectrum, or a learning disability that almost makes them unable to relate to others. They can learn how to properly socialize utilizing the horse.” Another equine therapy offered by Open T.R.A.I.L Ranch is the Therapeutic Riding Program for ambulatory riders with physical, emotional or cognitive special needs. The goal is for graduates to be able to ride unassisted anywhere safely. Hippotherapy is specialized physical therapy treatment on horseback. Participants may not be able to walk, but because the movement of the horse mimics walking, muscles are strengthened and range of motion increased, which can lead to an ability to take purposeful steps versus being in a wheelchair. “Really incredible stuff goes on you don’t get without the horse – they are our number one partner,” Kate said. Lastly, she teaches Vaulting, basically gymnastics on a horse. The small class promotes social skills, confidence and team building. Instructors and therapies are certified by PATH, an international accrediting agency. The new barn is scheduled for completion in May, and that, along with the arrival of several more horses in June, will provide access for additional riders to benefit from equine therapy. The ranch has been open since 2012, the year Churchill High School alum Vasquez graduated from college with a degree in psychology and special education. She crafted her degree always mindful of her goal to open a therapeutic riding facility. Texas Open T.R.A.I.L Ranch relies on volunteers to provide personal interaction and support for each rider and horse. Students as young as 14 can 10 be trained to participate in a variety of meaningful roles. Find Kate at opentrailranch.org for more information.

Q: My 12 year old Beagle is getting very arthritic. What is a good supplement to give to him?

A: Hair balls themselves are not much of an issue and can be controlled with diet or supplements. My concern with consistant vomition is the possibility of other disease. I would recommend a good exam by your veterincJ.rian, evaluate diet, indoor vs outdoor, age etc. We must rule out other causes to include renal disease, inflammatory bowel disease, neoplasia, or other metabolic diseases. A: As with all older dogs they can become arthritic like us. Assuming that your beagle has had an exam with labwork, radiographs and possible ultrasound exam to rule out other disease and reveal arthritic changes in progress. You can then discuss glucosamine supplements and adequan therapy initially. Later you can consider PRP (platelet rich plasma) (non invasive and uses dogs own blood) and STEM CELL (using fat cells from your dog to isolate a pure stem cell sample) therapy as arthritis progresses. I also encourage short brief walks daily and swimming if possible. We use water treadmill therapy in our clinic as well for locomotion.

Q: My cat is constantly throwing up fur balls. Should I be taking measures to stop it?

avoidingcat-astrophe and saving lives A

BY DR. KRISTINE HAWKINS

nimal overpopulation has plagued the United States for years. This is especially true in San Antonio. While typical puppy season ranges from March to October, cats can reproduce at any time due to the nature of their reproductive system. The ASPCA estimates that a fertile cat produces an average of 1 to 2 litters per year with the average size being from 4 to 6 kittens. Multiply this by the approximate number of intact stray cats (70,000) in the United States and you can see a potential “cat-astrophe” in our future!

This astronomical number can be decreased through TNR (trap-neuter-release) programs targeting feral cat populations in our area. Many people in San Antonio participate in trapping to help sterilize feral cats and prevent further litters. You can find more information about feral cats and how you can participate in TNR programs by visiting our website at SAhumane.org/ feral-cats or by visiting the San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition at sanantonioferalcats.org. Another way to help control this situation is to rescue and retrieve young kittens from feral mothers. If socialized properly, these babies can grow to seek human companionship and can be adopted out to loving homes rather than living off the street. Young kittens are especially at risk in the wild due to dangers from predators, accidents, and illness. They can have up to a 75% mortality rate before reaching maturity, a figure similar to their wild carnivore brethren. Without an immune system boosted by protective vaccinations, these kittens are prone to viral upper respiratory disease that can affect the eyes, nose, mouth, and lungs. Recent evidence of this unfortunate circumstance can be found at the San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS). Odin, a tiny 14 ounce kitten, was abandoned at the Brooks Spay/Neuter Clinic, operated by the SAHS, on the city’s Southside. This 3-week-old baby was found alone in a crate, caked in fleas, scabs, and waste. It was clear that Odin was suffering from an upper respiratory infection that was causing severe infection in both eyes. Though he was immediately placed on antibiotics and pain control, it was determined his right eye would require enucleation (removal). However, this serious surgical procedure would be extremely risky on a malnourished,

underweight kitten that weighed under a pound. Odin was set up in the SAHS medical clinic with warmth, antibiotics, pain medication, and all the delicious fattening food he could eat. He responded well to this new pampering and soon was purring in affection while gobbling down delicious gruel made from kitten formula and canned Purina Critical Nutrition. However, after a week his infection worsened and he developed an alarming fever of 104 degrees F. At this point we had to weigh the danger of a life-threatening infection against the riskiness of anesthesia and advanced surgery. Decision made, the SAHS staff sent positive vibes as tiny Odin (only 24 ounces!) underwent the removal of his right eye. Staff gratefully used donated diminutive ophthalmic (eye) surgery instruments to perform this risky pediatric surgery as gently and efficiently as possible. Though a little swollen, the change was like night and day. He went into foster care that evening, and it hasn’t taken him long to rediscover what it means to be a carefree kitten. Under a week after surgery, Odin is playing with his favorite toys, cuddling with his foster sister, and eating like a champion! His left remaining eye has continued to improve with time and medication. We are hopeful that his vision will eventually recover. Odin is a success case that many kittens born in the wild are not fortunate enough to experience. Please help us decrease these problems through vaccination, sterilization, and socialization. The SAHS offers low-cost wellness and spay/neuter services for feral and domestic cats at both our Fredericksburg location and the Brooks Spay/ Neuter Clinic. For more information on the services we offer, please visit SAhumane.org. Join us in being a part of the solution to pet overpopulation and homelessness!

sportsmedicine: not just for people anymore

S

ports-related injuries are a common occurrence for people, and an accepted part of the risk associated with sports. The risk of injury is much the same for our pets, even if the “sport” is playing fetch!

BY TIGE WITSBERGER, DVM, DACVS

The owners of Duke, a young Labrador Retriever, experienced this firsthand when he was chasing a Frisbee and trotted back limping on his right rear leg. After a trip to the vet and a round of pain medication with no improvement, Duke was referred to an orthopedic specialist, who diagnosed a torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL); a very similar injury to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in humans. Duke’s knee was surgically stabilized and after a couple of months, Duke was back to chasing Frisbees. This type of story is more common than most pet owners realize. Every pet has a different level of regular activity, depending on their personality, age, body condition, and health. The upper tier of activity includes the “professional” pet athletes – agility animals, flyball dogs, and herding dogs. The majority of our pets, however, fall into the “weekend warrior” category. These animals look forward to weekends at the dog park, playing fetch, or a long jog. Even pets who settle into a more sedentary category can experience a sports injury. In fact, a dog who is typically inactive can be at an increased risk for injury if he suddenly breaks into a sprint after a squirrel. The most common sports-related injuries are orthopedic. Ligament tears like Duke’s are one of the most prevalent, but elbow and shoulder injuries, hip problems, fractures, herniated spinal discs, and dislocated joints are also common. With young dogs, you can also see growth abnormalities. For any suspected injury, see your family veterinarian for an evaluation as soon as possible. Some injuries, like spinal damage, can be time-sensitive and have a short window of opportunity to give your pet the best chance for recovery. For other injuries, your family veterinarian may recommend a consultation with a board-certified surgeon. 14

Arthroscopy can now be used to treat many injuries with minimal discomfort for the patient. Shoulder ligament injuries, elbow bone chips, tarsal (ankle) and hip injuries, and even dysplasia can be treated with minimally invasive arthroscopy. More severe problems in joints can be treated with a total joint replacement procedure. No matter what your pet’s level of activity, there is a risk for sports-related injuries. Keep your pet in good body condition to give them the best tools for a healthy, injury-free life, and monitor them closely for any signs of lameness, difficulty going up and down stairs, abnormal gait, or stiffness. Check with your family veterinarian if you suspect your pet has a sports-related injury to determine what treatment or type of surgical intervention may be necessary to get your pet back to playing fetch, competing, or squirrel chasing! Dr. Tige Witsberger is a board-certified small animal surgeon and partner at MissionVet Specialty & Emergency. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. After graduation, Dr. Witsberger completed a one-year small animal rotating internship at the University of Missouri. He then completed his three-year small animal surgical residency at Texas A&M University. Dr. Witsberger has special interest in minimally invasive surgery including arthroscopy, laparoscopy and thoracoscopy as well as minimally invasive fracture repair.

t’s Summer and Texas Summers are HOT! Not only for us, but man’s best friend as well! Keeping your dog cool is serious business because overheating can be life-threatening if not treated immediately.

Dogs, in general, are intolerant of too much heat. Heatstroke normally happens when a dog loses his innate ability to regulate his body temperature. Dogs do not sweat all over their bodies the way humans do. Their body temperature is chiefly regulated by respiration such as panting. If a pooch’s respiratory tract fails to clear heat quickly enough, heatstroke may take place. It is important to protect Fido. So noticing the early signs of heat exhaustion will reduce the chances of canine heatstroke and death from heat exhaustion.

Cool in the Pool A wading pool is wonderful for keeping your dog cool. Labs and other water lovers really enjoy playing in the water. {August 2017}

Here are things to look for: • Restlessness • Excessive thirst • Heavy panting, lethargy, lack of appetite, dark tongue, rapid pulse, fever, vomiting, glazed eyes, dizziness, or lack of coordination. If your dog shows any of these symptoms after being exposed to high temperatures get him to air conditioning, lower his body temperature slowly and transport him to a veterinarian. Marlene Ring is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer and Professional Member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT). Her Dog Training business “PAWSitive Solutions Dog & Puppy Training” has been offering positive training for 17 years. Marlene shares her life with two rescue dogs, Dakota and Bliss.

BY MARLENE RING

Here are some tips to keep him safe and comfortable. • Water, water, WATER! • Allow your dog access to lots of clean fresh water. • Add ice cubes to make it cooler. Leave your dog at home while running errands. Even if the temperature outside is only 80°, inside a car it can rise to 160° very quickly even with the windows open. Wet your dog’s head with a moist towel before you leave for your walk. As his hair catches the breeze it will cool him down.Wet his whole body anytime he’s outside for long periods of time.

Have a “Pooch-cicle” Give your dog chicken or beef broth ice cubes as treats. Add chicken or bacon to make it even yummier! I always incorporate these tips when exercising and training to avoid heat exhaustion. Noticing the early signs will reduce the chances of canine heatstroke and death.

Bear and Kaikoura

BY MATT APPLEBY

hen touring Rebecca Creek Distillery, it’s hard to miss Bear and Kaikoura. Each weighing more than 110 pounds, the two-year-old Newfoundlands are often seen exploring, meeting new friends in the Distillery’s dog park, or playing with the toys onsite for all four-legged friends visiting the Distillery. While Bear is constantly racing through the dog park’s obstacle course and can’t seem to sit still, Kaikoura is perfectly content staying close to owner Brad Baldwin, head distiller at Rebecca Creek, coercing him into another game of tug-of-war with her favorite rope toy. Brad keeps an eye on the friendly (and slobbery) Bear and extremely loyal Kaikoura, especially during the Distillery’s weekly “Whiskey & Wags” event, where, every Sunday, dog owners are encouraged to

20

bring their pups to enjoy the weather, a few handcrafted cocktails made with Rebecca Creek Distillery’s awardwinning spirits, and a game of fetch or two for the dogs. Founded in 2009 by Steve Ison, Rebecca Creek Distillery was the first legal distillery in South Texas since Prohibition. It has since grown to become one of the largest craft distilleries in North America with nearly 85,000 cases sold annually. Its product lineup includes Rebecca Creek Whiskey, Texas Ranger Whiskey, Enchanted Rock Vodka, and Enchanted Rock Peach Vodka. The Distillery offers free tours on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and its tasting room and gift shop are open-to-the-public for group tastings and private events for up to 500 people. Dogs and their owners are welcome to enjoy the dog park and the Distillery’s grounds.

CLIENTS SAY IT BEST! “Dr. Howard was absolutely amazing! I spent over 2 hours with her and not once did she make me feel rushed or like it was time to go. She was extremely thorough and compassionate. It's never easy discussing cancer treatments for your fur baby, but she made me feel comfortable and at ease. If we decide treatment is best for our boy, we will definitely be back under Dr. Howard's care. Thank you, Dr. Howard!” Kole’s Mom, Kathryn
