BOARDING Vet’s Office vs. Boarding Facilities What you get with a Vet’s office is a professional, veterinarian-run facility that allows your pet immediate access to emergency care if needed. You can pay for additional walks/ exercise & there’s an added feeling of security that your pet will receive “extra special care” by virtue of being at the vet. Many dogs do get stressed visiting the vet. A prolonged stay might take that stress to a new level. The stress on your pet due to other nervous, barking dogs and being exposed to “kennel cough” (even if vaccinated) are also factors to consider. Boarding facilities typically have all the bells and whistles: doggie daycare, pools, special treats & toys, trail walks, soothing music at bedtime and cameras to monitor your pet. Where there are many dogs to monitor, oversight can happen: from dog fights erupting that can injure your pet, picking up a cough, stress from other dogs & strangers and losing weight from not eating due to these stressors.

PET-SITTERS Large Companies vs. A Dedicated Pet-Sitter Companies like dogvacay.com or rover.com allow you to conveniently sign up online, browse sitters & specify your preference for a pet-sitting location. You can choose a sitter based on their profile, compare rates and reviews. The most important question is: How well do these companies really evaluate their sitters? A recent horror story emerged from a former client of dogvacay.com when the pet owner launched a social media campaign to find her beloved dog - who was lost while in the care of the company’s sitters. Her dog had been missing for 2 weeks before the sitters notified her. During that 8

time, they continued to send her daily updates that her pet was “just fine”. After discovering her dog had gone missing, she immediately launched a Facebook campaign to find her dog. Good Samaritans located her beloved pet not long after. According to the former client, the sitters were not background checked by the company and had a criminal record. With a dedicated, go-to sitter, you can take your time to conduct your own background investigation & speak to other current clients. Individual sitters also offer overnight visits, which allow your pet to stay in their most familiar environment and lessens stress (on you and them). My personal, go-to sitter is Pop-Ins Pet Nanny. She is experienced with all types of pets, reliable & flexible (with 8 perma-pets & additional fosters at any given time, this is the best scenario for me). A potential snag you may run into with a one-person operation: due to demand, booking desired dates might be a problem, so book in advance. illy is an 11 year old Chihuahua with a very active life. Lilly goes to work with Dr. Olga Jaimez every day to 4 Paws Animal Hospital, where she likes to greet new and current patients. When Lilly is not working, she enjoys spending her time bike riding. Over the past 4 years, Lilly has biked over 3000 miles. Lilly recently became a member of the SATX Social Ride and on Tuesday nights, Lilly can be seen riding with the group in her lighted pet basket. Besides her bike riding, Lilly is also a fan of parades and pet costume contests. Lilly has been in the Fiesta King William Parade for the past 10 years and has participated in numerous pet costume contests around the city. or pet lovers, the Internet can be a wonderful place to find great deals and recommendations on dog toys, cat treats and even special items, like “pet friendly” travel destinations. However, when it comes to health advice for your animals, online sites may not be the best option.

Anyone can post anything online… and this has allowed non-veterinary pet “experts” to develop sites that promote special lines of diets, unique pet products or even just discuss particular breeds. Unfortunately, when these “experts” cross over and start discussing veterinary medicine, there can be serious consequences for the pet. Owners should look for websites that have a veterinarian who either writes or oversees the content going onto the site. This is key to make sure that the information you are researching is coming from a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. State Veterinary Medical Associations will often have resources on their websites to help pet owners find quality advice and recommendations. The association’s Facebook page may also be helpful. Look for the Seal of Approval from the American Society of Veterinary Journalists. This organization certifies individuals who wish to provide any sort of animal health information through various media outlets. Veterinary bloggers can also help pet owners, although it is important to understand that they can’t diagnose or treat your pet’s problems. A bonus to following popular veterinarians who blog is that you can get more of a personal viewpoint on a particular topic versus a more detached article describing that same topic on other sites. Online review sites are also very popular. Almost 80% of online users say they trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. Sites like Yelp. com, YP.com, Angie’s List and others are used by millions every day. When doing research online to find a veterinarian, be sure to follow a few guidelines while reading reviews.

First, find a site that provides a balance of positive and negative postings. Look for at least ten to twelve reviews before you can say you spot a trend for that particular business. Look beyond the reviewer’s words. Are there genuine concerns over care and service or are emotions and a focus on money obscuring the real issue? Look at the reviewer’s profile. Has this person reviewed other businesses? Are they using similar language in all cases? This could be an individual who is paid to post positive reviews for a wide variety of businesses. Try to find “real” accounts to read versus people who are trying to promote themselves. Your veterinarian and their website will always offer you the best and most trusted source of animal health information. By maintaining a positive relationship with your veterinary team, you can have confidence that your veterinary professionals are eager to help and offer good, solid advice! ou’ve seen them on TV, at the dog park, and likely all over your Facebook feed. They are typically colorful, bright, and sometimes goofy. Athletes to the hilt, these guys are charismatic and have a draw to them that is hard to deny. What could we possibly be talking about? A selection of dogs that in the American Kennel Club are affectionately and widely lumped into a group of dogs called The Herding Group.

The Herding Group is a wide selection of body types and colors but they share a couple things across the spectrum, brains, and beauty. The Herding Group is widely loved here in the southern United States where people still fancy large trucks and working livestock. It’s not without great cause that many people exclaim “Sign me up!” to those big ears and colorful eyes, but the herding breeds are not without their difficulties. This month we will share a brief discussion of both the pluses and minuses of owning a member of the Herding Group. BREED SELECTION: The American Kennel Club, largely accepted as the experts of dog breed and conformation here in the United States defines the Herding Group as a selection of dogs who are largely motivated by instinct to drive the movements of livestock (and sometimes family members!). This group is composed of 29 dog breeds in the AKC and was initially created back in 1983 and as such is the newest group recognized. All these breeds were once collected in the “Working Dog” group but were singled out in the ‘80s as being very different than just simply a working dog. The group is comprised of a huge selection of body types from the low lying Corgi to the giant Old English Sheepdog. Similarly, the hair types 18

range from the sleek haired Malinois to the indescribable dreadlock sporting Puli. The German Shepherd himself is also classified in this group. As his name implies, shepherding was the primary use of the breed back in its inception, though many would argue that the purpose has changed of late and few are used for that purpose anymore. The breeds in this group most widely recognized here in San Antonio are probably the Border Collie and the Australian Cattle Dog (known popularly here as a Heeler). Throw in the colorful Aussie and you have three of the most popular dogs in the area. We see their influence not only in our purebred dog population but also in our shelters as the color component to many of our mixed breed pups! PLUSES: So what makes these guys so popular? Why do we see their stunning faces in so many places? Why are they so incredibly easy to recognize? The qualities we listed above are the reason these dogs make great pets. Alongside their beauty and athleticism, their intelligence and problem solving skills make them valuable companions for a rancher, jogger, or someone looking to do agility with a canine partner. They are largely incredible family pets, being affectionate and loyal. They have a good capacity for protection (as seen in the Malinois and German Shepherd) and most have a true goofy side that can be exploited by the younger members of the family. As they age, this group can sometimes find a “calm Texas

intelligence” that makes them valuable for training younger members of the pack and they find a purpose in their own life that inspires duplication. Owners feel calm themselves when this wisdom shows itself. So why then do so many find themselves without a home?

wise. These dogs need an outlet for the genetics that have been selected for in their breeding. A Herding Group dog, if not given an outlet for their energy, can develop behavioral issues that can become medical compulsions, similar to obsessive compulsive disorder. 3. Alpha personalities. Many of these dogs, due to their intelligence, develop an alpha or dominant personality. This can be challenging for an owner who has never owned dogs before. If not given the confines of rules and consistency, these dogs can gradually take over the home and become “the boss” dog, dishing out discipline and instructions to the humans and canines in their family. To the untrained eye, this can become aggression complete with teeth bearing and snapping. If not controlled, this behavior may escalate until the pup will need professional help to overcome the behavioral issues. In short, the breeds in this group are amazing, intelligent, gorgeous creatures. They were created for a purpose and some of the instincts are so strong that curving their drive can be a herculean task. When you take on the ownership of one of these pups, be prepared to give them something to do, a job, an outlet, and you will be rewarded with all the benefits they bring to the table.

MINUSES: No breed or group of dogs is perfect. All come with their list of minuses that a potential owner should make themselves aware of prior to coming into possession if possible. In some cases the same things we tout as benefits can become the drawbacks of these great animals. 1. Intelligence. The first and foremost warning for all would-be owners is the intelligence of this group of dogs. These dogs do not do well in an apartment or small home, or in truth ANY home, without extracurricular activities and enrichment. Border Collies in particular, largely touted as the MOST intelligent dog breed, should NOT be left to their own devices with nothing on which to dwell their big brain. They will find their own amusement. This could mean something benign like herding the chickens or squirrels (or cats) to escaping the supposedly escape-proof enclosure or destroying the home. The dogs in this group are not for families inclined to home life or without time for devotion to training and enrichment. 2. Athleticism. Again, listed as one of their benefits, the truly active lifestyle of these breeds is not to be taken lightly. It does not function that a very energetic and driven breed of dog can suddenly DR. Q: My husband wants to take our dog to the dog park but I'm afraid that he may pick up the flu that is going around. Should I be concerned about keeping him away and is there a vaccine I can give him?

Q: My groomer told me that my dog's paws were splitting and she saw some blood. At what point would I need to bring him to the vet? A: It would be wise to have your veterinarian check your pet’s dry splitting paws. If everything checks out normal on exam, using a lanolin based ointment may be helpful. A: Dog parks have become very popular in the last few years and they are a great place for dogs to play and socialize. Usually they are safe and many pet owners frequent them without incident. However, in the last few months my clinic has treated several upper respiratory cases and dog fight cases that have stemmed from dog park visits. While visiting a dog park, your pet’s exposure to other dogs can lead to kennel cough, mycoplasma pneumonia, parasites and gastrointestinal issues. So if you and your pet visit a dog park make sure your pet is up to date on all vaccines and it’s a good idea to take

your own water and water bowl. Also, during your time at the dog park its best to keep an eye on your pet because a dog fight can occur in an instant.
