LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Attention all wedding crashers!! This is your chance to join in Pearl and Teddy’s nuptials. Our June annual pet wedding spectacular is a reader favorite. Who among us, is not in love with love? This years wedding theme is Steam Punk. We also have an update on last years couple Rae & Chase, that is worthy of Jerry Springer. We are proud to feature personal stories from our readers who used their pets in their wedding festivities. If you have included your own personal pet(s) in your wedding or are planning to, please email the details to dana.texasdogsandcats@gmail.com for consideration for next years wedding edition. Also included in this issue is an article by Marie Crabb concerning what poisonous plants for your pet to avoid. Additionally, Dr. James Peterson discusses remedies for your itchy pets. Meanwhile, summer is just around the corner so please make sure your pets don’t get overheated. Remember on just a 78 degree day (which we all know is a cool SA day), a car parked in the sun goes to 160 degrees in just minutes. So, PLEASE do not leave your dog in a car. Here’s hoping all your future brides have a furry wedding! Sincerely, Dana Raimondi Tell our advertisers you heard about them in Texas Dogs & Cats-San Antonio! poisonousplants FOR PETS S BY MARIE CRABB, GRI

ellers often consider landscaping to add “that little bit extra” appeal to their home prior to selling it or homeowners often look to new landscaping to add more greenery to their scenery. As pet owners, we must be aware of which popular plants, flowers and trees are toxic to our pets. Some of the more popular options for landscaping due to their weather hardiness (as we live in a drought prone area) are toxic plants that if ingested by our pets could end very badly. Here is a condensed list of popular plants that have toxic results for our pets: Aloe Vera. This low maintenance, drought resistance houseplant has healing qualities for us humans, however has some poisonous qualities if ingested by our furbabies. Its toxic chemical composition can cause vomiting, diarrhea depression, anorexia (yes, anorexia). Amaryllis & Lilies. Beautiful blooms of doom. These pretty flowers pose a toxic risk to our pets. The Amaryllis produces toxins that will cause excessive drooling, vomiting, a reduction in blood pressure, abdominal pain and trouble breathing. Lilies are especially toxic to cats, with the possibility of one nibble causing severe kidney damage or even death if ingested by your kitty. Begonias. A popular choice in the South Texas landscaping scene due to their colorful annual blooms, this plant is poisonous to both dogs and cats. It can cause oral irritation and burning of the mouth, excessive drool, vomiting and difficulty swallowing. The tuberous begonias are the most toxic. Caladiums. Also known as “elephant ears” the caladium is a common decorative and sun tolerant plant, offering colorful, heart shaped leaves for our visual stimulation. What does this plant offer to our furbabies? Calcium oxalate. A chemical compound that can produce sores, burning and swelling of the mouth and throat causing difficulty in breathing, vomiting and difficulty swallowing. All around bad news for pets. Texas Mountain Laurel & Mescal Beans. Beautifully fragrant and a native Texas plant, we San Antonions love Mountain Laurel for its purple grape-scented blooms. What is not so attractive is that if our pets ingest the extremely toxic red mescal beans found in the silvery pods 8

of these trees they can experience convulsions, nausea, depressed breathing and even death in extreme cases. Sago Palms. These poky faux-palms are common landscaping features in the San Antonio area as they are very drought tolerant, however pet owners beware - as every part of this plant is poisonous with the seeds posing the biggest threat. The seeds contain the greatest concentration of cycasin, a toxic chemical that can cause our furry loved one to vomit, produce bloody stools, increased urination as well as the more serious neurological symptoms like seizures, comas, circling, paralysis and even death. More information on poisonous plants can be found anywhere on the web or on you can refer to our blog for more resources and information on poisonous plants for pets: http://www.exquisitesa.com/ poisonous-plants-for-pets/ If you are concerned that your pet may have ingested a poisonous plant, contact your vet immediately. Bojangles - Exclusively For Dogs hosted by QVC shopping network, and our treats went nationwide. We create our treats one small batch at a time, strictly controlling and sourcing each ingredient from the most reputable vendors. Our motivation is the love of our four legged family members. We are now 3 years old as a company and growing to serve the health of our canine community locally and nationally! Our product line has grown to include grain free options and we always have something testing in the market. Read more about our story, the special dog who motivated our start, and our journey at www.bojanglesfordogs.com. HEALTH AND HAPPINESS TO ALL!

BY KAREN CAHILL

BoJangles was born out of a profound love for our own dogs that we know most dog owner share with their four legged friends! Their health is of utmost importance to us and we were unsatisfied with the treats on the store shelves as most of them contain preservatives, animal by-products, high amounts of salt and sugar, and lots of wheat and corn. After a lot of research, we saw the need to create an all-natural, preservative free, and gluten free treat to supplement our dog’s regular feeding schedule. After two years of AUTUMN & JACK formulating and testing our recipes, we were satisfied with the results! We applied and became licensed by the state of Texas as a commercial feed distributor and meet all the provisions of Chapter 141 of the Texas Agriculture Code. Thus, BoJangles Exclusively for Dogs was born! We soon won an inventor’s contest

A Furry Wedding Story Loren & Chris Amaker

L

oren & Chris Amaker tied the knot May 9, 2015 at the waterfall at Canyon Springs Golf Course in Stone Oak. Loren felt it was important to have her 2 1/2 year old Boxer Rudy a part of their wedding and her loving groom obliged. Rudy, walked down the center isle to start the wedding procession and then was seated in the front row on the brides side with their dog walkers. Loren responded to these questions about their big day: Q1: Why did you choose to have your dogs a part of your wedding day? I do not have children. Although I still possess some nurturing instincts. I have always seen my pets as part of my family, even at a young age. So I guess I see them as my children. Yet I understand and agree that human children come first. And if I had children, my pets would come a close second to all of my children. But I still want all of my family at the wedding, to include my four legged kids. Q2: How accommodating was everyone in letting your dogs be a part of your wedding and did you get resistance from anyone? There was no resistance. Nobody attending my wedding had a choice. Excluding Rudy was a deal breaker. If you want to come to my wedding, please come. If you have a problem with my dog in the wedding then you're probably not really my friend. Snickers and eyes rolling behind my back, no sweat! There will always be 'those people'. But nobody said a single negative word to me (I think because they are polite and know better); and in fact many were thrilled we included him and even mentioned his handsome attire. They took several pictures of Rudy too. As far as the venue, if they did not allow Rudy I would not have

selected Canyon Springs Golf Course. The people at the venue who helped on the day of the wedding were nothing short of stellar and loved seeing Rudy partake in our celebration. Q3: What advice would you offer any future couples thinking of having their pets in their wedding? Discern carefully if your dog is well socialized, at an appropriate age and has a personality for such a public event. If your dog is unruly on a leash, a barker or a difficult to control in public, this may not be the best plan. Some dogs are uncomfortable with such settings and you need to put their needs first. If they will be uncomfortable and thus a possible distraction, keep it simple and take some pre wedding pictures with them and call it a day Also, having a handler for them is key. Q4: What was the best part of having your dogs be a part of your wedding? It is extremely personal and meaningful to me. Just having him there to share publicly with Rudy was crucial for me. A wedding is a public announcement declaring your love and commitment to one another in front of God, family and friends. Having Rudy there was my way of also saying 'he is my family'.

A Furry Wedding Story Danny & Grace Gonzalez

O

WITH CHLOE & COOPER

n December 13, 2014 I married my best friend (one of them anyway). We have many friends, but there are only two of them who make the world go round. We waited a little over ten years to finally make it official. Their last name that is. Chloe was a gift I received from my husband, Danny when we first started dating. My dad was diagnosed with cancer and Danny thought it would help me cope a little better which it did.

BY GRACE GONZALEZ

On December 31, 2012, my husband popped the question at midnight (with a little help from my friends). I was ecstatic. My husband knew planning a wedding would be stressful; especially in the midst of remodeling our new home. He knew I wouldn’t be able to contain my excitement and stress in planning one of the happiest days of our lives, so, he bought us another puppy—Cooper. We married at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with some of the most influential people in our lives, our family and friends. Our dogs couldn’t be a part of the ceremony, even though the Church offers a Blessing of the Dogs ceremony. We compromised and made them part of the engagement, new home, bridals – and truthfully, they were some of the ones who brought us closer together.

Muscle trauma can also lead to dysfunction as scar tissue develops. Peripheral neuropathies also may be congenital or acquired and in some cases, can have strong breed associations. Many dogs with acquired neuropathy have age-related degeneration of the nerves over time. Laryngeal paralysis and facial nerve paralysis, which are both relatively common in older large breed dogs, are also examples of neuropathies. Conditions like Cushing’s disease, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, and cancer can also cause problems within the peripheral nerves. Myasthenia gravis, tick paralysis, and toxins including coral snake venom, black widow spider venom, botulinum toxin and organophosphate pesticides can all cause neuromuscular junction dysfunction. Are there other uses for electrodiagnostic testing? Yes! Brain-stem auditory evoked response (BAER) testing can be performed using electrodiagnostic equipment and helps determine whether or not there are abnormalities within the structures or pathways necessary for hearing in dogs and cats. If you feel that your pet may have been born deaf or may have developed an issue with his or her hearing, then BAER testing may be able to help determine the severity and location of the problem. How do I find out more about electrodiagnostic testing and whether or not my dog or patient may be a candidate? Mission Veterinary Specialists is the only hospital in South Texas with the capability to perform this type of specialized testing. If you feel that your pet may benefit from electrodiagnostic testing please discuss referral to see Dr. Cooper with your family veterinarian. Dr. Cooper is the board-certified small animal neurologist at Mission Veterinary Specialists. She graduated with her DVM from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine & then completed a one-year small animal rotating internship at the University of Missouri. Dr. Cooper completed a three-year Neurology/ Neurosurgery residency at Texas A&M in 2012 and was awarded the neurosurgery certificate in 2013. She completed certification for Cervical Disc Arthroplasty in 2014.

itchypets

I

are Miserable Pets!

t’s a common occurrence…pet owners expressing feelings of frustration, helplessness and even despair from a single symptom. Their pets itch and scratch, itch and scratch - and it is not a flea problem! Although this may not seem like a big deal, these owners suffer through sleepless nights as their pets scratch and chew and lick, all in an attempt to get some needed relief. If it’s not fleas…what can this common problem be?

Just like people, our pets can suffer from allergies and sensitivities to particles in the air. Many times, pollen, certain grasses and trees or even dust mites can trigger this reaction in pets. Unlike people though, our pets rarely sneeze and show signs similar to “hay fever”. Instead, our pets are itchy and they will do anything to relieve that sensation. Some pets scratch constantly, others lick and chew at certain spots, like their feet and still others might rub against carpets and furniture. Whenever your pet is itchy, it is important to remember that external parasites or even food allergies can cause very similar symptoms. Your veterinarian must help you distinguish between flea bite allergies, food allergies or atopy. Beyond the itchiness (known medically as pruritus), pets might also show recurrent skin and ear infections or seem to be obsessed with licking their paws. These symptoms most commonly occur in warm weather for pets with pollen or dust allergies, but can also occur year round in some cases. Diagnostic tests for atopy try to determine what allergens are causing your pet’s problems. Blood tests are often convenient since they can be done by most veterinarians. Skin testing (similar to scratch testing in people) is another test for atopy and is usually performed by a veterinary dermatologist. While not simple, atopy can be managed with baths, medications, managing the environment and sometimes with immunotherapy. You’ll need good communication with your veterinarian and maybe a veterinary dermatologist!

Pollen counts in the home can be reduced by asking family and visitors to remove their shoes at the door. Routine vacuuming of areas that the pets frequent and washing of pet bedding in mild, fragrance free detergents can also limit the allergen exposure inside. Some pet owners opt for antihistamines to help provide relief, but experts caution that they are only effective in 30-40% of dogs. Other owners insist that “steroid shots” or pills are the answer. However steroids simply decrease the symptoms and do not solve the problem - and they are not without secondary side effects. Ideally, many pets with atopy would undergo allergy testing and then start an allergen specific immunotherapy. By slowly exposing the pet to increasing quantities of the allergen, this immunotherapy can actually “desensitize” the pet and, over time, help reduce the severity of the symptoms. To learn more about allergies and our pets, ask your veterinarian about atopy and allergy testing. Dr. James Peterson is a 1992 graduate of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. He began his career in Emergency Veterinary Medicine in San Antonio, and has practiced both Emergency and Small Animal Medicine in San Antonio for over 20 years. He is currently a director of Mission Pet Emergency in Northwest San Antonio and owns Hill Country Animal Hospital & The Palms Pet Resort in Helotes, TX.

A Furry Wedding Story Jaclyn & Andrew Ramsey

ndrew is a former Military Working Dog Trainer and Jaclyn is a vet tech from Sydney, Australia who now helps run Andrew’s dog training business Ramsey Nosework. Ramsey Noseworks trains detection dogs for both law enforcement and civilians that are interested in the sport of Nosework. The Ramsey’s included their fourteen year old Miniature Dachshund Mitzi and their 12 year old Belgian Malinois Fusel in their wedding. They said they could not have gotten married without them present. Andrew responded to these questions about their big day:

22

Q1: Tell us about your proposal story? It was one of the most nerveracking yet happy moments of my life! Jaclyn and I are both dog trainers, and I specialize in training substance detection dogs based off of my experience of training explosive detection dogs for the U.S. military. Jaclyn came and trained with several of our clients to run dogs in detection on searches outside close to Emeryville Marina in the San Francisco Bay Area. My proposal plan was that I was going to have her run our dog on some searches and on the very last search I was going to place the ring in a wooden heart-shaped ring holder I hand carved and our detection dog would take her to it and alert, the same way a law enforcement or military K-9 would alert to narcotics or explosives. Everything was going according to plan so I hid the ring and Jaclyn started her search. When she was close to searching where the ring was hidden, one of my friends who was watching came and told me a CROW had flown off with the ring! I couldn't believe my ears and it took a moment for me to process what I had heard. Myself and the two other friends helping that day looked for it for about a minute before I had to tell my wife what was going on and let her in on the attempted proposal so she also could look for it. After about 3 minutes, my wife ended up seeing the ring sparkle in the sun. She didn't look at it and immediately gave it back to me. After I calmed down, we started all over and did it again. When our Belgian Malinois lead her to the ring I got

down on my knee with our Dachshund and placed the ring on her finger and proposed. It was both a scary and wonderful day :) Q2: What advice would you offer any future couples thinking of having their pets in their wedding? This question brings out the trainer in me and makes me think of advice to ensure the dogs are happy and that the wedding runs smoothly. Prepare your dogs to remain stationary on a touch pad or dog bed and increase the duration of the amount of time they are willing to be there before you release them to be free. If they are going to have to wear costumes and are not used to doing so, I would start by selecting their costumes and begin having them wear the most basic pieces for short periods of time while dispensing high value rewards to them to create a positive association with them wearing the costumes. Then slowly increase the amount of time that they are required to wear the outfit and decrease the frequency of your treat deliveries to them. If your dogs are happy to stay on a touch pad and are ok being in their costumes, then you can conduct the ceremony smoothly with them present. Q3: What was the best part of having your dogs be a part of your wedding? We had an intimate, small wedding in the evening in the backyard of the house I grew up in. Only relatives and very close friends were present. This had to include the dogs.

about our

covermodels Pearl & Teddy

WRITTEN BY: MARIE CRABB (OWNER OF PEARL) & SHERRY PFAU (OWNER OF TEDDY)

Pearl is a 2.5 year old Great Pyrenees who came to us from a Ranch out of Bulverde. She is extremely sweet mannered and always the first one I introduce the rescue dogs to because she is so calm tempered. Pearl enjoys annoying her Chihuahua big brother as well as the resident cats (especially the 3-legged one) and chewing up every sprinkler in sight. She has a knack for locating buried water lines. We have renamed her the $6,000 dog because of it. Pearl has a tree in the yard where she likes to hide her chew toys, sprinkler heads, garden hoses, our shoes and any other treasure she can find. She rings a bell on the door when she is ready to go out, usually right about the time when we sit down for dinner. We absolutely love Pearl because of the joy and laughter she has brought to our lives. Because sometimes you have to laugh when you get a $6,000 water bill and you think it’s fake. We love you Pearl! Three years ago Teddy was rescued from Animal Care Services right before he was owner surrendered. The plan was to put him up for adoption through Wayward Whiskers, but instead I fell in love with him and decided to adopt him myself. He is the sweetest, smartest dog and loves EVERYONE- cats, dogs, and people. He helps my foster cats get used to dogs because he is so gentle and sweet with them. His favorite trick is to roll over on his back and give high fives and he loves to snuggle with kittens. His best friend is my other dog Monster (a girl) and he adores the dog park. This August Teddy will be four years old.

As The Milkbone Turns where are last year's cover models/newlyweds now?

BY CATHERINE LARIA

W

ell that lasted about as long as a celebrity nuptial in Hollywood. Here’s an update on our cover models from last year. The marriage of Whirlwind’s Rae and Chase is no more. And to make matters even juicier, we’re told that the bride (Rae) has left the groom (Chase) for his son (Paint)! See if you can follow this dog-opera.

Paint and Rae had a family back in 2013, but the following year Rae felt the need to marry a dog more stable and “seasoned.” Chase was the perfect catch with his long white mane and his blue eye. And such a gentleman, he even welcomed Paint as his Best Man and Paint’s daughter Jelly as the ring bearer. Sadly, as the year passed Paint went off and traveled the world, winning agility competitions from the US to Mexico. When he returned Rae realized she missed that stud muffin. She tried to work it out with Chase but when they attempted to start their own family, Chase was a little “too seasoned” and could no longer have children. Well that settled it for little Miss Rae of Sunshine. She dumped Chase and ran back to Mr. Paint…. She is a bitch after all! The couple’s spokesman said they are happier than ever and plan a meet-and-greet at the BEACH BLANKET BOWWOW at K9 Country Club on June 6th from 11am-3pm where paint will be showing off his mad agility skills for all the girls to see. ….And so are the days of their Whirlwind lives….

It was your perfect day. Now it’s time for their

A Furry Wedding Story Heather & Justin Hutto

H

eather and Justin were married October 12, 2014 at the Gardens of Old Town Helotes. Justin Hutto is a firefighter for the San Antonio Fire Department and Heather is the Executive Director for the Bright Horizons Child Care Center at Citibank. The Hutto's both volunteer for the Animal Defense League in San Antonio. The Hutto’s could not imagine their big day without their pooches Raider & Sophie being a part of it. Heather responded to questions about their wedding in the following manner:

Q2: What role did your dogs have in your wedding day? Originally, our plan was to have Raider (our black and white pit bull) be our ring bearer and Sophie would walk with me down the isle. We chose to include our 3 year old nephew in the wedding and assign that job to him while our 2 nieces performed the job of our flower girls. The thought of walking with a dog and managing a long white 29 {June 2015}

train down the isle wasn't a good idea. Q3: How accommodating was everyone in letting your dogs be a part of your wedding and did you get resistance from anyone? Everyone was very accommodating to our dogs in the wedding even our wedding venue. There were reservations at first because of the breed, but we reassured everyone that our dogs would be on leash with professional dog handlers and they were well behaved. My husband and I are huge pit bull advocates. We were happy we were allowed to include our dogs in the wedding.

PHOTOS COURTESY: RAUL-WWW.RAULSPHOTOGRAPHY.COM

Q1: Why did you choose to have your dogs a part of your wedding day? My husband and I rescued both of these dogs together over the years we have been together. They are a huge part of our family, our wedding wouldn't have been the same without them. Our families know how incredibly important are dogs are to us and we knew they needed to be there to witness us say our vows. Their presence alone brought smiles to us and our guests. :-)

Q4: What was the best part of having your dogs be a part of your wedding? The memories! The pictures are priceless and something my husband and I will cherish forever! We love our dogs very much and we are so happy they were apart of our special day! 29

Q: My dog Sophie is an Irish Setter. She is 6 years old but unfortunately has really bad breath-ughh! Is there something you could recommend like perhaps a spray or special bone that can help remedy this? —Thank you! - Tina

A: Scorpion stings are painful but usually benign. Occasionally dogs have an allergic reaction that may require steroids and Benadryl to alleviate the effects of the sting. You may want to seek advice from your local certified pest control company as to how to control the scorpion population in and around your house. A: Dog breath can change with the diet, the pet’s general health and dental health. There are sprays, such as Leba III that can be used daily or weekly to keep teeth clean. Oxyfresh is another product for the breath; drops are added to the drinking water daily. C.E.T. chews can help reduce plaque and calculus. As always, a good physical exam and possible blood work by your veterinarian is important to determine if there are any underlying issues that may also be causing bad breath.

Q: I’ve seen several scorpions in my backyard recently. How do I know if my dog gets bitten, and is there anything I need to do if he does? He’s a Yorkie Poo so he’s pretty small. —Thank you, Jennifer
