Married with Fur-Children Moving The wedding bells are ringing, the honeymoon is booked and your new home together is waiting. Woof ! Wait! Moving? While you have been slowly preparing for all these big life changes your pet may be blissfully unaware of your plans. Moving can be stressful for your pets. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to ease the transition for everyone. Before moving your pet permanently, try to complete as much of the moving and unpacking as possible. Chaos or noise may leave your pet with a negative impression of her new home. Take your pet’s belongings. Familiar toys, crates and blankets will be comforting. Once everything is in order take your pet to visit the new home a couple of times, making sure each visit is a positive one. When you make the move, you may consider restricting your pet to one area of the house at a time. A smaller environment may be less intimidating. This is especially true in cats. Kitty may feel safer confined to a quiet restroom or bedroom for the first day or two. Locating her litter box will also be easier in a smaller space. It is a good idea to take a couple of days of to stay with your pet in her new home. There will be many new sounds, smells and routines for her to adjust to and she will appreciate your support. BY MICHELLE POPILEK
Step Fur-Children If your fiancé has pets, it is likely your pets have already met and become great friends. However, playing together and living together isn’t always the same thing. Sometimes dogs will get along in neutral territory, like a park, but may not appreciate another dog entering their home. Go slow. Bring the new guests over for frequent visits before the big move. Encourage good behavior and be on alert for any tucked tails, 2
raised fur, teeth display or snarling. Be especially careful around things like toys, food bowls and crates. For the first few weeks or even months it would be wise to separate everyone while unattended. Moving a dog and cat in together can be a little tricky. First and foremost it is important that the dog is not cat aggressive. This can be very dangerous for both animals. Assuming that the dog is friendly with cats, it is still important initially that she have a safe space away from Fido. If she is afraid of her new sibling she may hide, become stressed out, or be too nervous to navigate to her food or litter box. It would be wise in this situation as well to keep all pets separate while unattended. One big happy family Have patience. In a new environment accidents are more likely to happen. Your dog may not know where to go to ask to go potty and your cat may not remember exactly where the new litter box location is. Not to mention all the unfamiliar items, your wife’s shoe collection will be exciting to your pooch and your husband’s favorite recliner may look like a perfect scratching post to your cat. Just remember that with time, everyone will likely settle into a happy and peaceful home. LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER It’s June and love is in the air, and not just puppy love! Last years wedding issue was a fan favorite so we decided to make this an annual event. This edition is for all those who are or who know someone who are planning on using their pets in upcoming weddings. This year we have even featured a ferret themed ceremony. If any of our readers have included their own personal pets in their weddings, please email the details to dana. texasdogsandcats@gmail.com for consideration in next years wedding edition. Also included in this issue, is an article about pet appreciation week June 1st-June 7th, although for OUR readers the other 51 weeks are ALL pet appreciation weeks! Meanwhile, summer is just around the corner so please make sure your pets don’t get overheated. Remember, on just a 78 degree day (Which we all know is a COOL Texas summer day), a car parked in the sun, gets to 160 degrees in just minutes. So, PLEASE do not leave your dog in a car. Here’s hoping all your future brides to be, have a furry wedding! Happy Summer!

petappreciationweek
W
hen we think about love and showing appreciation to our loved ones, we often think about giving flowers and a card, picking out their favorite chocolate, going to dinner and a movie, etc. But in what ways and how often do we show appreciation to our pets? Hopefully it’s shown every day and in a variety of ways. What better time to start brainstorming than during Pet Appreciation Week (June 1-7).
BY FELICIA NIÑO
Here are a few ideas as to what you can do with your loving canine or feline companion: Here are a few ideas as to what you can do with your loving canine or feline companion: 1) Get your pets groomed. Think about how we feel when we get our hair done or go for a nice relaxing massage – a trip to the groomers will make them feel like a million bucks and they’ll be strutting around the house for days. 2) Take your canine companion to a local dog park (options in the San Antonio area - Phil Hardberger, Pearsall, Madison Square, McAllister and Tom Slick Parks) for a good hike and playtime or just to a new cool spot where they can explore. Please remember to have your pets’ vaccinations up to date, take their collar and leash, poop bags to pick up after them and have plenty of water available to keep them hydrated. 3) Take your pet out to dinner at a pet-friendly restaurant like Charlie Wants A Burger on the Riverwalk, Sam’s Burger Joint in Downtown SA and Crawdads Bar and Grill or have them join you on a night out at The Beverage Bar, The Cove, Ritas on the River, The Flying Saucer, etc. 4) Set your pet up with an exclusive photo shoot. Renee Spade, with Renee Spade Photography, takes absolutely breathtaking pet photos and strives to capture your pet’s inner supermodel. What better way to pamper your pet and show off their personality than with a beautiful photo and frame in your home. 5) Go on a staycation at a pet-friendly hotel. For
instance, the Grand Hyatt San Antonio is a gorgeous hotel where you can rest and relax with your pet, while adoring the downtown/Riverwalk atmosphere. 6) Take your friendly pooch out for extra walks and invite your neighbors and their dogs to go along. It will be a fun experience for all and it will give your pet and his/ her friend’s time to socialize and enjoy each other’s company. 7) Have appreciation time with your furry friend. Set aside 5, 10, 30, or 45 minutes to focus on cuddles, kisses, massages, etc. 8) Go on an adventure and let your pet pick out their new toy or treat or make your pet their very own one of a kind toy or treat from their favorite human. 9) And last but not least - Take them to the vet for a checkup. Your pet means the world to you and your family, so make sure that they are healthy and up to date on everything they need to live a long, happy life! We hope you and your pet have a spectacular Pet Appreciation Week! Felicia Niño is the Communication Associate for the San Antonio Humane Society. S
o this gives us a great opportunity to increase our awareness about our furry feline friends.
Let’s begin with some general cat statistics. Cats are the number one species of animal kept as pets in the United States. (Don’t tell the dogs they got beaten). The actual numbers are hard to get your hands on as cats are hard to classify, and don’t they know it! The difference between an “owned” cat, a “stray” cat, and a “feral” cat can be as simple as the person that you ask. Every city has a different law on ownership. By San Antonio law, for instance, an animal that you provide food and water for longer than a consecutive three day time period could legally be considered yours. The HSUS released statistics in 2012 that said 62% of American households contained at least one pet. According to the Department of Animal Care and Control in 2014, 76 million of those pets were cats, with another 60 million cats running loose on the street! The average cat owning household has just over 2 cats, because everyone knows owning cats is addictive…. You can’t have just one! One surprising statistic is that around 90% of all “owned” cats are spayed and neutered! That’s an amazing statistic! So where do all the cats keep coming from? Cats are incredibly good at procreating. While we consider them predatory animals, in truth they are a species that spans the line of both predator and prey. So while they keep
our rodent population down, it is also necessary for them to procreate rapidly in order to combat the large losses of life from predation (coyotes, owls, dogs) and accident (hit by car etc.). A female cat can come into heat as early as 4 months old, allowing her to give birth to her first litter by 6months and potentially as often as every 2 to 3 months. With an average feline litter being around 4.2 kittens, this means this fertile creature could produce as many as 16 kittens before her first birthday! A single female cat, in conditions maximized for thriving can be the ancestor of up to 5,000 kittens in the first 5 years. With all these kitties running around here how does one tell the difference, I mean a cat is a cat is a cat, right? It’s not like there are Great Dane kitties and Chihuahuas…. True, kitties do not necessarily come in the astounding size and shape difference that dogs have been bred to fill. In most instances, the dog breeds were fashioned with a niche in mind, hunting prey, defense, companion. While cats, on the other hand, have pretty much insinuated themselves into our lives, grooming us to be the owners that they want. So the variety of cat breeds is not as extravagant. The Cat Fanciers Association, much like the AKC is for dogs, recognizes only 41 cat breeds as being distinct and “pure”. The market for “purebred” cats

A Furry Wedding Story
Drs. Stephen and Patricia Dinger
D
r. Stephen Dinger, owner of Advanced Pain Management & Rehab and Dr. Patricia Gomez Dinger, owner of Advanced Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology Center met in medical school in New York in 1997. They married in Dr Patricia Dinger’s home town of Corpus Christi, TX. They continue to share a love for animals and have helped their children start a non-profit organization called Looming For Pets. This organization sells bracelets to raise money for animal charities with the goal of preventing euthanasia in homeless animals in San Antonio. Bracelets can be purchased at either office location: 540 Madison Oak Suite 210, San Antonio, TX 78258 or 5000 Schertz Parkway Building 400 Suite 400, Schertz,TX. The Dinger’s uniquely decided to have their precious ferrets be a part of their wedding day. Dr. Patricia Dinger responded to these questions about their big day: 1. Why did you and your husband feel it was important to have your ferrets a part of your big day? Our ferrets Kado and Keva were a part of our lives for 4 difficult years of medical school. When we were stressed and needed a break, they were our comic relief. They were part of our family and we really wanted them a part of our big day. 2. How accommodating was everyone in letting your ferrets be a part of your wedding and did you get any resistance from anyone? We asked our priest permission and he was hesitant but he did allow it (since they were in a pet
12
carrier during the mass). They were just carried down the aisle in a basket. It was very low key. My dad said that if the ferrets were in the wedding then he would not come! I told him I would send him pictures..... (He came) 3. What advice would you offer any future couples thinking of having ANY pets in their weddings? If it is a pet that is part of your family then I encourage it! 4. What was the best part of having your ferrets be a part of your wedding? My ferret that had seen me through four years of college AND four years of medical school died 2 months after my wedding, but I will always have those memories of him being there! My female ferret lived for one additional year and she was so depressed after losing him.

etiquette for Dogs in Weddings
ADVICE FROM A TRAINER
A
lthough the custom had been practiced for many years mostly in upper class circles, it was former Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson that first caused weddings between dogs to enter the headlines and the national spotlight when she arranged a wedding for her Golden Retriever, Star, and her Chihuahua, Luca, on the beach in Malibu, California in 2005. The tradition has since taken off, making dog weddings a new trend for animal lovers that these days have evolved into a hot commodity for all. If you love your dog like a child why not throw them a festive party with all their friends and parents?
BY FRANK HAEGELAND
And while we are on the subject of festive parties, why not include your pooches in your own wedding to make an extra fun and memorable day. More and more people these days plan for their pets, usually dogs, to take part in their weddings together with friends and family. Once the decision has been made to have a wedding that includes the family’s best friend, for most people the next several questions usually follow in lockstep; “How do we make this furry beast who can never sit still stop jumping up and down on family members and guests alike?”. “How do we ensure that the human guests will have access to their food without first having to play a game of catch the canine who stole the steak?” And although it was envisioned to work like a dream when the idea was first concocted, “How do we make this cutest of all puppies behave properly so the human bride and groom can retrieve their wedding rings without first having to wait until the next day to see if they are passed out through the rear of the furry ring bearer?” There are several ways to incorporate the family’s favorite canine into the ceremony; a popular choice is for the dog to bring the wedding bands down the aisle to the awaiting groom or to walk the wedding rings down on a pillow. You can for example have the dog wear the pillow on his back or hold a basket in his mouth. Yet if you don’t feel competent to take on a potentially major training project, an easier way out might be to have the dog simply perform certain tricks that he already knows. 14
Whenever a furry charmer is to be included in a wedding ceremony, whether it is for a fun and festive wedding of two loving canines or for a human wedding, there are two considerations that cannot be left to chance, these issues must be planned for well in advance: (a) You must train the dog to behave properly in the chaos of fun and commotions that a wedding ceremony and party are to man’s best friend. Let me repeat that: You must train, practice, practice and train the dog for all contingencies and distractions associated with a wedding, especially if the pooch has been assigned tasks to perform during the ceremony. Keep in mind that the larger the event, the bigger the distractions. (b) You should seriously consider appointing one or more dog wranglers to be in charge of the animals. The wranglers would for example be in charge of otherwise easily neglected tasks such as canine bathroom duty. While some dogs may do fine off leash at least during parts of the event, others may need to be on leash during the entire event. Make sure you judge your dog correctly. While he may be calm and attentive to your every need during normal circumstances, a wedding with potentially hundreds of guests is far from “normal circumstances” and can be overwhelming for even the best trained canine. If you choose to train the dog yourself, most professional trainers agree that positive reinforcement of desired behavior works much better than punishing
&
d gs cats Texas
undesired behavior. As every owner knows, dogs are highly intelligent. Your job as a trainer is therefore to get your best friend interested in and focused on what you are teaching, and then to make the training fun – like playing a fun game. We all learn faster when the subject matter is exciting, pooches are no different. Assume you are training complex behaviors such as: (a) Walk down the aisle. (b) Carry a basket in your mouth. (c) Give the basket to the best man when you reach him. (d) Confidently ignore all guests, animals, birds and other distractions around you while performing these tasks. In order to perfect such complex behaviors, you must think “baby-steps” by training each behavior separately at first, and then combining them into what will appear as a seamless single behavior. Finally, once the dog has learned the entire series, you must start to introduce distractions, including having a crowd of people representing the guests at the real ceremony talking and laughing loudly while the dog is performing his tasks. If the real ceremony is to be held outdoors, you should ideally even introduce a few cats, squirrels and other animals in order to distractionproof the dog. {June 2014}
If possible, you should do at least the last third of your training in the actual venue of the event. Remember, anything you can do during training to perfect your four legged star’s performance, will pay off handsomely during the actual event. Finally, have fun with it – remember the worst that can happen is that your furry friend will cause the entire event to end in a much unplanned chaos. But what could possibly make the day more memorable than that? Frank Haegeland has trained dogs since he was 12 years old. He is currently the chief trainer at Pet Galaxy where he trains both dogs and their owners. Frank also treats dogs suffering from various psychological issues such as depressions, phobias, behavioral problems, etc. Frank never turns down trying to help a dog with behavioral issues, even dangerous dogs, so long as the causes are psychological in nature. Behavior problems stemming from medical issues such as a brain injury or hormone imbalances, are always referred to a veterinarian. 15
Q: My dog Sophie is an Irish Setter. She is 6 years old but unfortunately has really bad breath-ughh! Is there something you could recommend like perhaps a spray or special bone that can help remedy this? —Thank you! - Tina A: Dog breath can change with the diet, the pet’s general health and dental health. There are sprays, such as Leba III that can be used daily or weekly to keep teeth clean. Oxyfresh is another product for the breath; drops are added to the drinking water daily. C.E.T. chews can help reduce plaque and calculus. As always, a good physical exam and possible blood work by your veterinarian is important to determine if there are any underlying issues that may also be causing bad breath.
Q: I’ve seen several scorpions in my backyard recently. How do I know if my dog gets bitten, and is there anything I need to do if he does? He’s a Yorkie Poo so he’s pretty small. —Thank you, Jennifer A: Scorpion stings are painful but usually benign. Occasionally dogs have an allergic reaction that may require steroids and Benadryl to alleviate the effects of the sting. You may want to seek advice from your local certified pest control company as to how to control the scorpion population in and around your house. A Furry Wedding Story
Kristen & Jon Matsumoto
J
on & Kristen were married June 22, 2013 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Jon Matsumoto has been a key member of the San Antonio Rampage hockey team, playing center, but is currently a free agent. Jon & Kristen created together, Matsumoto’s Rescues which is a charity to help rescue and lower the stray dog population by educating the community of San Antonio on the importance of responsible pet care. Kristen spends most of her time working on their cause and also volunteers and fosters for the Animal Defense League. When Kristen & Jon tied the knot, they knew they wanted their beloved dog Rooney, to be part of their big day. Kristen responded to the questions about their wedding in the following manner:
tion that made an exception and allowed us to have Rooney attend the wedding! Our photographers and videographers were great in finding creative ways to capture images of Rooney with us at our wedding that we will treasure forever.
1. Why did you choose to have your dog a part of your wedding day? Since day one of rescuing our precious Rooney he has played a huge role in our lives. He is a member of our family and we couldn’t even imagine not having him be a part of our special day!
4. What advice would you offer any future couples thinking of having their pets in their wedding? If it is important to you to have your pet at your big day don’t settle for not having them there. The first thing I mentioned at any location or vendor I talked to while planning our wedding was that I had to have my dog there. If they weren’t accommodating, I just moved on to the next. Eventually you will find a venue that will allow your pet to join in on the days festivities, it just may take a bit more work! After everything is all said and done and you look back on your big day, you’ll be happy you put in the extra effort!
2. What role did your dog have in your wedding? I called Rooney my Dog of Honor! He sat by my side as I had my hair done and makeup applied. He was with me throughout the whole day leading up to the ceremony. He was a great sense of calmness with all the chaos surrounding the day! 3. How accommodating was everyone in letting your dog be a part of your wedding and did you get resistance from anyone? At first it was extremely difficult to find a location that would allow Rooney on their grounds. After searching for weeks I was finally able to find a loca20
5. What was the best part of having your dog a part of your wedding? I love looking back at the photos and videos from our wedding and seeing Rooney in a lot of them! My husband and I still talk about how cute Rooney looked in his bow tie and how happy we were that he was able to be a part of our big day. Texas

BY DR. AMELIA KEITH, DACVIM
Do you suffer from hypertension, otherwise known as high blood pressure? Did you know that your furry companions can also suffer from this condition? The good news is that it can be diagnosed relatively easily, and there are pills that can help alleviate the increased pressure. Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in the arteries. The more blood the heart pumps and the narrower the arteries, the higher the blood pressure. High blood pressure is a common condition in which the force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it could cause health problems, such as heart disease, blindness, kidney disease, or even a stroke. In dogs and cats, hypertension can be caused by the stress of being in the veterinarian’s office (termed white coat hypertension), or secondary to a variety of underlying diseases (that are typically ruled in or out based on blood, urine, and imaging tests). It is very rare that an underlying cause is not found. In cats, common conditions associated with high blood pressure include kidney disease, heart disease, or hyperthyroidism. In dogs, common conditions associated with high blood pressure include kidney disease, heart disease, hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease), or diabetes mellitus. Diagnosis is relatively easy and inexpensive. It involves measuring the systolic blood pressure. Time is allowed for your dog or cat to become acclimated to the veterinarian’s office. Once acclimated, a soft plastic cuff is placed around one of its limbs. A Doppler blood pressure machine is used by placing the cuff just below the paw on a shaved area. It is turned on and the pulse is audibly heard. 22
Then, the cuff is inflated until the pulse is no longer audible. Next, the cuff is deflated and the measurement is recorded once the sound is heard again. Normal measurements vary between 100160 mmHg (millimeters of mercury), however, there is some variation between breeds. Not every dog or cat needs to have a blood pressure measured. If your pet is older, has signs of high blood pressure (heart murmur, blindness, stroke, increased thirst or urination habits), or has a disease that is associated with high blood pressure, a measurement should be obtained. Treatment involves administration of a pill (generally once daily), and it is typically lifelong. Frequent evaluations are needed to recheck the blood pressure measurement, as well as additional blood and urine testing if indicated by your veterinarian. Additional treatment recommendations are based on whichever disease is causing the high blood pressure. With appropriate management and therapy, cats and dogs can do well for quite some time. Dr. Amelia Keith is one of two board certif ied internists at Mission Veterinary Specialists. She is from Austin, attended veterinary school at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, completed a yearlong internship at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Tinton Falls, NJ, & most recently f inished her three year small animal internal medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania of Philadelphia.

A Furry Wedding Story
Michael & Meagan Wiederstein
M
ichael and Meagan Wiederstein tied the knot October 26, 2013 at Rio Cibolo Ranch in Marion, Texas. They both absolutely love their dogs Carlie and Libby. Both Carlie and Libby have been a part of their lives and helped form their relationship into what it is today. They taught the couple how to love endlessly and to have compassion. Although the Wiederstein’s did not actually have them physcially at their ceremony, they decided on a way to still incorporate them as a part of their special union. Meagan responded to these questions about their big day: 1. How did you choose to have your dog(s) a part of your wedding day? Carlie and Libby were part of our wedding by participating with my bridal portraits. 2. How accommodating was everyone in letting your dog be a part of your wedding and did you get resistance from anyone? My mother came to our bridal portrait location to help with the dogs and everyone, including the photographer was very cooperative in having my dogs in the pictures. 2. What advice would you give any future couples thinking of having their pets be a part of their special day? If you want to have your dogs in your wedding, do it! I knew I wanted to incorporate my dogs into the wedding somehow, so I chose to do my bridal portraits with them. I will always have the memories and the pictures from that day to cherish forever. 4. What was the best part of having your dogs be a part of your wedding celebration? I absolutely love my dogs; they are like my children. They have always been there for me through everything and I couldn’t have imagined not including them in our day in some kind of way. I really don’t know what I would do without them, I will forever have these pictures to cherish and look back on 30 years from now when my sweet girls will have crossed the rainbow bridge.

THE UNION OF MISSY & SAXON
M
issy & Saxon are two therapy pugs, who are both members of Delta Pet Partners of San Antonio, which is a community partner of the national Pet Partners, an organization which registers therapy animal teams. Pet Partner teams visit hospitals, assisted living facilities, schools and the San Antonio Airport. Their purpose is to serve others through interactions with companion animals. They are a non-profit organization and all their teams are volunteers who serve with their personal pets.

Missy and Saxon were chosen as the “bride” and “groom” because they are the same breed, pugs.
Missy and Saxon were chosen as the “bride” and “groom” because they are the same breed, pugs. The wedding took place at Emeritus Hollywood Park. The wedding was intended as a thank you to the facility for allowing the therapy groups board of directors to hold meetings there, and also as entertainment for the residents. The “groom’s” father officiated. Because the wedding was intended as entertainment for the Emeritus residents, a chocolate and vanilla wedding cake was served to the human “guests”, along with punch and coffee. Other registered therapy dogs served as “bridesmaids” and “groomsmen”. The bridesmaids wore pink bows and flowers around their necks and the groomsmen had collars that resembled bow ties. Saxon had a tuxedo and Missy a dress and veil for the ceremony. Afterwards, their wedding garments were removed so they could be petted by the residents. A harpist added to the festive atmosphere by playing before and during the ceremony. Missy & Saxon tied the knot just over a year ago in February 2013. We asked their pet “parents’, what is the status of their current relationship and they replied, “Missy and Saxon continue to serve as therapy dogs, visiting hospitals and participating in the “Pawsitivie Reading” program in a school and library.” To learn more about Delta Pet Partners of San Antonio, you can go on their website at www.deltappsa.org or contact them at (210) 858-8351. {June 2014}

it’s all
aboutthename A
nyone that has worked a veterinary emergency shift will tell you what a challenge that can be. We generally see people and pets in the middle of a crisis, and let’s face it, that is not a happy place for anyone. One way that helps me deal with the challenges we face is to find the story behind how a pet got his or her name. It helps me feel more connected to my patients and sometimes I even get a get a few chuckles along the way.
BY DR. RIVA HERON
One of my favorite pet name stories is about a kitten named Batman. Batman’s owner was 5 years old and he doted on Batman. As I was examining Batman, I realized that this adorable, jet-black bundle of energy really should have been named Batgirl. I shared this tidbit with Batman’s owner and his mother. His mother understood right away, but Batman’s owner was convinced that I was confused. He very patiently explained that Batman and Batgirl were different superheroes. His cat was Batman (enunciated very slowly and clearly for my benefit). Even his Mother tried to explain that Batman was a girl, but she was rebuffed. Batman = boy. Lesson learned – do not re-name a client’s pet! Tonight I saw Chuck Norris. That’s right – right here in the clinic. A bit exciting if you are into martial arts, but this Chuck did not have a black belt. In fact, I am pretty sure this Mr. Norris is a couch potato. Yet in his younger days, his owner confessed that he boxed the family dog’s ears repeatedly. I wondered why he was not named Mohammed Ali, but now had the good sense not to suggest a name change. I confessed to a client I was writing an article about pet names and she was happy to share that their dog was named Mr. Wigglebottoms – you can imagine where his name came from. Now I was on a roll. I started scrolling through our patient files and found a few names that made me smile. How about Missy Yippee? Just a little imagination shows where that one came from. My guess is that 30
Meowtain Dew either has a very bubbly personality or is some shade of bright yellow. How can I resist mentioning Master Chief ? He clearly has a proud Navy heritage. What about Karaoke? I had to wonder if that name was given because the owner liked to sing or because the dog had some sort of special vocal talent (that the neighbors may or may not have appreciated). Can you imagine calling out for your dog, Itchee? We hand many Harry’s in our files, but only one Harry Potter! Thank you to all the people that have shared precious memories and stories; I treasure every one. These remind me that despite the frustrations of emergency care (for owners and for veterinarians), I do this job for the pets and for the people that love them! Dr. Riva Heron attended the VirginiaMaryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (’95) and is also a retired Naval Intelligence Officer. She has practiced Small Animal Medicine in Virginia, Minnesota and Florida and Emergency medicine in San Antonio at I-10 Pet Emergency. She is currently the Director of Medical Services for Mission Pet Emergency in San Antonio.
