contributors LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Our cover this month is shot at location at the VFW Post 76, which is the oldest post in Texas. We tribute those dogs that serve and protect us. This issue is a potpourri of interesting articles. Texas A&M presents an article about how dogs can help Military vets suffering from PTSD after returning from overseas. The new Brooks Spay/Neuter Clinic on the South side is featured in an article from the San Antonio Humane Society. Dr. Youssef, owner of North Star Animal Hospital, has a light hearted opinion piece about playing fun games while walking your dog. Getting back to the main November holiday, Missionvet Specialty & Emergency, provides us with important information about preventing pancreatitis and how to avoid this common holiday hazard. Yappy Thanksgiving to you all! Sincerely,

about our
covermodel Panzer Faust
BY KIM SMITH
Panzer Faust is a black German Shepherd that was found wandering the street outside Pawderosa Ranch’s Airport location in 2007. After trying to find his owner to no avail, Pawderosa owners Mike and Kim decided to make him a part of their family which includes Foxy (cover model Nov 2015), Wonton (cover model Nov 2016), Belted Galloway cattle, chickens, and Stringbean the horse. Panzer is as sweet a dog as he is handsome! On the cover, he is pictured in front of the VFW Post 76 in downtown San Antonio. It is the oldest VFW in the state having celebrated it’s 100th anniversary in 2017. Post 76 is open to the public with live music on the weekends and it even houses an exhibit about military working dogs that have served overseas. VFW Post 76 is a fitting location since Panzer’s pet parent, Mike, is a veteran Marine that has proudly served his country in combat. We at Pawderosa Ranch would like to recognize and thank all of the veteran and active-duty service members that dedicate their lives to protecting our freedoms. Pawderosa Ranch is a Veteran- and San Antonian-owned Lodging and Daycare facility for dogs. We offer customized care and enrichment with a focus on activities that address the individual needs of each pet and benefits them mentally, physically, and socially. Full Service Grooming is also available. Pawderosa Ranch has two locations: Near the San Antonio Airport and in Schertz. Give us a call at 210.404.9941 or visit our website at www.WeLoveYourDog.net. WITH DR. KIRBY OF ALAMO HEIGHTS PET CLINIC
A: Weight gain can be a problem for many dogs, especially at middle age. First, a full exam and lab work (to include thyroid) by your veterinarian will rule out any underlying diseases. If okay, your veterinarian will discuss exercise and an appropriate diet (consider Metabolic Diet by Science Diet). You didn’t mention if there are any orthopedic conditions like hip dysplasia that could limit more exercise and weight loss. You should be able to work down the weight in a normal dog over 3.5 months safely.
A: Allergies are very common in our pets; you referenced cedar as one of them. Without testing we don’t know for sure what allergens the pet is susceptible to. Sometimes symptoms are associated with a certain period or season or symptoms can be food related. Antihistamines are generally ineffective, though we have had some luck with Zyrtec. Fatty acids are important, using them would be wise. Changing our environment or where we live is unlikely, bathing the pet weekly can help control allergens on the skin. Dr. Kirby graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&M with a degree in Biomedical Science in 1979 and earned his DVM in 1984. Dr. Kirby has been the owner and director of Alamo Heights Pet Clinic since 1997. His veterinary interests are surgery, internal medicine, ultrasonography, and rehabilitation therapy. He uses both a conventional and a holistic approach to medicine. preventingpancreatitis: how to avoid this common holiday hazard
'T
is the season for caring and sharing. When the sharing involves gifts from the table, however, sometimes the outcome is not so joyful. While a small amount of boneless, skinless turkey breast may seem harmless, too much salt or seasoning, as well as other holiday treats may be just the ticket for a post-meal trip to your local veterinarian.
BY ASHLEY ERBE, DVM
Pancreatitis can occur year round, however, there appears to be a marked increase in the number of cases seen through veterinary emergency rooms around the holidays. This is attributed to the amount and variety of foods available and accessible to our pets. While not all episodes of pancreatitis are associated with diet, feeding a high fat or sugary meal is a leading contributor to this disease – especially in dogs. Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, the organ responsible for production of digestive enzymes and hormones that help regulate blood sugar. When the pancreas becomes inflamed these enzymes can leak into surrounding tissues causing significant pain and gastrointestinal upset. This may present as acute vomiting, diarrhea, painful or distended abdomen, hunched posture/prayer positioning, fever, decreased appetite, and lethargy. The combination of these symptoms can lead to severe dehydration and potentially life threatening complications such as organ damage or clotting abnormalities. Treatment of pancreatitis is supportive care including IV fluids, antinausea medications, antacids and pain medications. Treatment can range from days to weeks depending on the severity of the disease. There is no substitute for veterinary care once signs develop; the best treatment is to avoid the triggers and take precautionary measures to prevent this disease. Tips for Avoiding Pancreatitis: 1. Avoid giving table scraps to pets - this includes warning guests about the potential dangers of offering food to pets. 2. If you must indulge your pet in the spirit of 14
the holidays offer low-fat healthy options including: unseasoned green beans or carrots, small amounts of pumpkin or sweet potato, or cooked unseasoned, boneless, skinless turkey or chicken. 3. During and after meals ensure all food items are out of reach of pets – including clearing table items and locking or disposing of garbage. 4. Find other ways to spoil your pets including setting time aside for long walks, playing a game of tug or fetch, or cuddling on the couch after a good meal. 5. Always avoid these food items: chocolate/ desserts, high fat/greasy foods, onions, garlic, grapes/raisins, sugar free foods containing xylitol, macadamia nuts, and and raw dough. If your pet is experiencing some or all of the symptoms described above seek veterinary attention. While not all of these signs can be attributed to pancreatitis, early recognition and treatment can help avoid life-threatening disease progression. Dr. Ashley Erbe is an emergency veterinarian at MissionVet Specialty & Emergency. She completed both her undergraduate and veterinary curriculum at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Following graduation she completed a one year small animal rotating internship at the University of Pennsylvania. She has spent the last three years practicing emergency medicine. In her free time Dr. Erbe enjoys hiking, swimming, climbing, and spending time with family and friends.

walkingyourdog fun games you can play while
D
o you walk your dog every day? If so, that’s wonderful! While walking Fido may be mandatory for those in apartments, it’s also very beneficial for people—and pooches—with yards. Daily walks keep our canine pals active, and offer them beneficial mental stimulation. However, if you and your pet walk the same route every day, you may want to add a little fun to your walks. Here, a San Antonio, TX vet lists some fun games you can play while walking your pooch.
RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT It’s easy to put a pet-friendly twist on this classic childhood game. Just change out the traditional commands to ‘Stop’ and ‘Go.’ This is also a great way to work on Fido’s training! SEARCH FOR TREASURE Bring some small treats with you, like pieces of kibble. As you are walking, drop one on the ground now and then. (Make sure Fido doesn’t see you do this.) Then, tell your pooch to ‘Find his treat.’ Instant tail wags!
BY DR. MINA YOUSSEF
SWITCH Teach Fido to move from your right side to your left when you say ‘Switch.’ This is a fun way to keep your pet focused on you, instead of the neighbor’s cat or that frisky squirrel in the nearby tree!
18
SPEED UP! SLOW DOWN Another thing you can do is vary your pace. This is a great way to get a mini workout in! Start at a normal, easy pace. Then, tell Fido ‘Speed up’ and start going faster. After a few minutes, say ‘Slow Down’ and reduce your speed. Just be sure not to tire your canine buddy out! OBSTACLE COURSE If you have room in your yard, set up a doggy obstacle course. You can use a picnic table, ramps,
or anything else Fido can fit on or under. Go around the course before heading back inside. TAG/COME Reinforcing your pet’s training can be both fun and beneficial. Every now and then, suddenly change directions, and start walking the other way. This works best if you have a long leash, and are in a park or grassy area, where Fido can’t run into traffic. When your pet starts running towards you, tell him to Come, and reward him with treats and praise. Please contact us, your San Antonio, TX animal clinic, for all your pet’s veterinary care needs. Cole Lyle and Kaya C
Endless PAWS-abilities
BY TEXAS A&M
ole Lyle, a 26-year-old veteran of the Afghanistan War, is working to combat the tragic effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a mental health condition triggered by experiencing a terrifying event, such as war. With his service dog, Kaya, at his side, Lyle is working to pass legislation that would provide veterans with PTSD easier access to service dogs.
20
Despite Lyle’s busy schedule collaborating with members of Congress, Kaya’s care is still of utmost importance. In support of Lyle’s efforts to provide veterans with PTSD easier access to service dogs, the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM) is providing Kaya’s care free of cost. Although Kaya has changed Lyle’s life for the better, service dogs are not provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for veterans with PTSD. But, Lyle is hopeful for a change. “The VA does not proCOLE LYLE AND KAYA vide service dogs for veterans to specifically combat symptoms of post-traumatic stress,” Lyle said. “I am trying to change that via H.R. 4764, which is the Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers (PAWS) Act.” Motivated by his own experience with PTSD and the tragic deaths of peers suffering from the condition, Lyle has been pursuing the PAWS Act for over two years. Lyle, like some veterans, did not find relief from traditional treatments, such as medication and counseling sessions. “When I got out of the military I was 22 years old, and I tried to utilize the VA system,” Lyle explained. “I took pills and even went to counseling, but my symptoms seemed to stagnate or get worse. Concurrent with getting out of the military, I had a couple friends commit suicide as a result of post-traumatic stress and I was also experiencing a divorce. I didn’t have the support system of my military family, I didn’t have a job, wasn’t in school, and I felt like I didn’t have a sense of purpose anymore. I
was tired of feeling this way, so I took the proactive step of quitting pills and exploring other options.” After bonding with Kaya, the relationship with his service dog positively changed Lyle’s life. “There were days when I just didn’t want to get out of bed,” he said. “When Kaya came into my life, I felt responsible for her care. The responsibility of taking care of Kaya helped me regain a sense of purpose, which is something pills could not do for me.” In addition, Kaya’s special training—which includes waking Lyle up from nightmares and responding to anxiety attacks, if needed— gave him hope that service dogs could be the solution for veterans who do not respond to traditional treatments for PTSD. But after researching service dogs, Lyle found that the VA does not readily provide them for veterans suffering from PTSD, citing a lack of evidence that service dogs help relieve PTSD symptoms. “The VA claimed there was a lack of empirical evidence to support that dogs specifically trained to combat PTSD symptoms were viable,” Lyle said. “I thought that was a lackluster response, because anybody that has ever owned a dog could tell you that they are therapeutic.” Determined to find relief from his condition, Lyle bought Kaya from a breeder and paid for her training. Kaya’s total cost, including initial shots and training, was roughly $10,000. The expense was paid out-ofpocket by Lyle. “Service dogs are specifically trained to do certain

things, such as wake somebody up from a nightmare and assist with anxiety attacks,” Lyle said. “The temperament, the specific training, and the cost to pay the people who train the dog, are all factors to consider when pricing a service dog. The average cost is probably closer to $20,000.” After Kaya was fully trained, she became a part of Lyle’s everyday life. She attends class with Lyle at Texas A&M, visits the grocery store, and loves accompanying Lyle on his trips. In fact, an innocent stroll with Kaya in Washington D.C. was the beginning of Lyle’s journey in creating the PAWS Act. “I was in Washington D.C. walking with Kaya when a United States Senator approached me and asked me about her,” he explained. “I started talking about Kaya and told him that the VA doesn’t provide service dogs to veterans suffering from PTSD. The Senator asked, ‘What do you think we should do about it?’ and I said, ‘You’re the policymaker, you tell me.’” The Senator invited Lyle to his office where they discussed possible solutions to the lack of service dogs available for veterans with PTSD. Although that particular policymaker didn’t initiate legislation, the encounter gave Lyle the idea to lobby Congress and find someone who would. Lyle has been working with Congressman Ron DeSantis of Florida to craft the PAWS Act and lobby
other members of Congress to support it since May 2015. In March of 2016, the bill was introduced to the House of Representatives, where it was referred to the VA Committee. Only time will tell if Lyle’s PAWS Act will become a law. “This is not something that is partisan,” he said. “Republicans and Democrats both understand the need to reduce the number of veteran suicides. We have a lot of support in different areas and in many different demographics and are optimistic about our chances for success.” Kaya has played such a positive and inspirational role in Lyle’s life. Her continuing health is of utmost importance to the CVM for both Kaya and Lyle’s well-being. The CVM looks forward to the success of Lyle and Kaya in their efforts to make the world a better place for veterans with PTSD. Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers (P.A.W.S) ACT Mission Statement: To inform members of Congress, using subject-matter experts and veterans with first-hand experience, of the benefits of service dogs who assist veterans with symptoms of post-traumatic stress; and to influence members of Congress to enact sound policy to expand veteran access to service dogs as medically necessary instruments for rehabilitation through the Veterans’ Affairs Department.

They All Said I was Crazy for Getting a Pet Door, but Now I Have No Worries! BY JOHN MOYA
W
hen I first started talking about getting a pet door, friends and family all said I was crazy. “Think of the animals you will be letting in! Think of the thieves that will have easy access to your home. You will not be able to sleep at night knowing that someone could crawl in and do very bad things to you or your family!” Between 3:30 AM and 5:00 AM, I could count on being licked in the face with the sound of whimpering in the background. Sebastian, my Golden, was telling me something…. he needed to go out! Being woken up from a good dream like this was not the way I wanted to spend the rest of Sebastian’s life. Sebastian was left inside in the nice comforts of my home while I was away at work. At that time, I worked at the airport and the daily commute was 35 minutes to my doorstep. This was before all the traffic lights and development on US 281. Upon arrival from work, he would run me over on his way to relieve himself. At times, I would find out that something did not agree with his stomach. An expensive call to Stanley Steamers usually occurred afterwards. {November 2017}
I received a phone call at work, “Sebastian ate the carpet—the whole carpet!” I can’t believe that I lived like this for years. I replaced door jambs from him scratching at the door wanting out. I replaced carpet due to his destruction. I have caught him in Kitty’s litter box (Yuck!). I have tried crating him only to give in to his whimpering. The loss of sleep was the last straw! Something had to be done! installed one of the best (if not the best) pet doors on the market that had dual security features and the maximum energy efficiency of any pet door on the market. Sleeping until I had to wake up for work was the biggest satisfaction that I got from it. Even Kitty got a pet door. Her litter box was moved to an empty closet and the poop eating contest was over for Sebastian. I never got an animal in the house that wasn’t supposed to be there. I didn’t have to rush home from work to see if there was a gift waiting for me to clean up. A would be thief would also have to think twice prior to entering. Judging from the pet door size, a German Shepard, Pit Bull, or a Rottweiler could be waiting. My friend’s and family’s concerns never occurred. If these events sound familiar, and you would like to stop the worries and stress over your pets, you may receive free information on the type of pet door that I installed. You may contact us directly at 210-464-8953 or by email at john@alamodogdoors.com. Some of your neighbors may alreadybe satisfied customers and I am sure that they would speak highly of their pet door and our installation services.
