over model Panzer Faust was a stray that jogged his way to Pawderosa Ranch's Airport location in 2007. After weeks of searching for his owner, Mike and Kim decided to claim him as their own. He was neutered at SpaySA (then Animal Resource Center), and so is the perfect dapper gent for this issue and cause! Panzer's brother Wonton was rescued from the streets of Houston by the Shiba Inu Rescue and then made his way to San Antonio. His rescued name didn't really fit him, so Kim and Mike started saying words aloud until he chose Wonton with a frenetic wag of his tail. Both dogs live with their sister Foxy, a Shiba Inu mix, and various other animals on a 40 acre ranch just outside San Antonio.

ovember is a special time of year. In the human world; we recognize November as “Movember,” an entire month dedicated to raising awareness and funding for men’s health. The official Movember Foundation has succeeded in creating a movement that contributed to the growth of over 4 million mustaches worldwide and over $559 million in funding for men’s health programs to date.

How Can You Make a Difference? Our goal is to get loud with canine health awareness! All month long we are dedicating our Facebook page (www. facebook.com/pawsatx) to the cause and making it fun for pet owners to do their part as well. To make it easy for anyone to participate, we are launching a photo submission contest in which we are challenging our Facebook fans and followers to become canine health advocates by submitting a photo of their beloved best friends sporting a mustache. Share the photo of your mustached dog on our entry page and you may be eligible to receive a special gift for your participation. Besides spreading the word through mustachey photos, we are asking for donations to support SpaySA, a much needed organization in San Antonio. The astounding success of the Movember men’s health campaign has inspired Pawderosa Ranch Doggie Play and Stay and SpaySA to explore some creative ways to ignite another important conversation: canine health. “We are a community of dog lovers and know that a dog’s overall health is just as important as his owner's,” said Mike Mitchell, owner of Pawderosa Ranch. “Keeping our furry friends healthy is our main concern.” During canine health awareness month (November) we have decided to do our part by informing as many people as we possibly can about the benefits of getting pets spayed and neutered. A: I have been presented with similar cases in the past and these cases usually involved repeated granuloma like formation from some type of constant stimulation within the tissue, for example snake venom or spider venom. diaphragmatichernia C harlie is a mixed breed dog who loves the mailman. One day, Charlie squeezed past his mom and ran out the door as the mail truck passed by, and was hit by a car. Immediately, Charlie's mom took him to her family veterinarian, where he was diagnosed with a fractured left front leg and a suspected diaphragmatic hernia. Charlie was referred to a board-certified veterinary surgeon, and happily, was able to get all of his injuries repaired without incident!

Charlie's situation is all too common for many patients after being hit by a car. Post-trauma injuries are often visible - fractures, lacerations and abrasions. Some of the most serious injuries, however, are internal; these are difficult to diagnose and treat. In Charlie's case, the internal injury was a diaphragmatic hernia. Diaphragmatic hernias NORMAL occur when the diaphragm – the sheet of muscle that separates the chest and lungs from the abdominal cavity – is torn. Contents from the stomach are then able to enter into the chest cavity, compressing the lungs and causing respiratory distress. Additional symptoms include vomiting, lethargy and irregular heartbeat. Some patients will not display symptoms for several days. Immediate veterinary care should be sought if symptoms begin to appear. Surgical repair of the hernia is necessary to close the tear in the diaphragm. For traumatic hernias, it is sometimes necessary to wait up to 24 hours for the patient to be stable enough for anesthesia, as breathing and heart rates must be normalized. During surgery, the surgeon will evaluate the diaphragm, locate the tear, return any abdominal contents to the abdominal cavity, and suture the tear closed. Organ or intestinal damage can also be evaluated at that time and repaired surgically, if necessary. Blunt force trauma, such as being hit by a car, is 18
one of the most common causes of diaphragmatic hernias. If you see an animal struck by a car, they should be taken for an evaluation by a veterinarian immediately. Pets can go into shock after trauma, and just like in humans, it can be life-threatening! Have a plan in place for emergency situations. Talk to your family veterinarian about their emergency services or DIAPHRAGMATIC HERNIA who they recommend in case of emergency. Being prepared is a crucial part of being able to respond quickly in critical situations. Dr. Witsberger is boardcertif ied in small animal surgery. He then completed his surgical residency at Texas A&M University in 2010. eaders who live in cities such as San Antonio or Austin would be suprised to learn that New Braunfels did not have a dog park until September 2014. Prior to the dog park opening, there were very few opportunities to legally let dogs exercise and play off-leash within city limits.
This changed after New Braunfels Puppy Playland was formed. Puppy Playland, part of the New Braunfels Parks Foundation, is group of citizens from New Braunfels and the surrounding area that banded together to raise money and support for a permanent dog park in New Braunfels. Puppy Playland founder Audie Gibson, along with Brooke Heithoff and many wonderful volunteers, raised community support and donations by: speaking at city council meetings, organizing 3k/5k runs and carnivals, designing and selling t-shirts, organizing wine tastings, meeting with the Parks and Recreation Department, arranging legal off-leash play times at city parks, presenting to community groups and businesses, conducting letter writing campaigns, and more anything to further the goal of creating a permanent dog park in New Braunfels After six years of fundraising and raising community awareness, phase one of the dog park opened on September 13, 2014. Phase one included basic amenities for a small and large dog park, along with a parking lot. Fundraising is not done, however, as there are lots of amenities to add to Puppy Playland’s dream dog park. Future phases will cost about $800,000 and will include bathrooms for humans, park lighting, {November 2014}
irrigation and grass, fencing-in all nine acres for off-leash hiking, and dog washing stations. Puppy Playland invites you to support their efforts by attending their “Doggie Carnival” fundraiser. The sixth annual “Doggie Carnival” will be held on Saturday, November 22, from 11 am – 3 pm at the New Braunfels dog park, located at 1240 Landa Street in New Braunfels. The main goal of the “Doggie Carnival” is to increase community awareness and participation in Puppy Playland, as well as raise funds for park development. The “Doggie Carnival” will include contests, fun booths, silent auction, and dog socialization time. Contests include fastest peanut butter licker, sit & stay, lottery ball, frisbee catch, and a costume contest. Booths include the world’s worst caricatures, face painting, treat guess, fun doggie make-overs, agility, and dog paw art. Last year, more than 400 humans and 200 dogs attended the carnival. Puppy Playland expects an even larger turnout this year. More information about the Doggie Carnival, including silent auction prizes, vendors, and a schedule of events will be found at newbraunfelsdogpark.com in mid-November. Claudia and Sean fostered Chuy for a couple of weeks while being in communication with a lovely couple in West Hartford, Connecticut, who had submitted an adoption application for him. Transport arrangements were made with Rescue Road Trips, which is a reputable and well-known transport avenue for unwanted and unloved dogs to global areas that are more dog-friendly and that have a greater appreciation of the true rescue dog/cat. San Antonio R.O.C.K.S. is very grateful to Claudia and Sean for saving Chuy, giving him a second chance at being happy with a wonderful family, and being loved the way he deserves. Fostering is not an easy experience at times, but the end result is a life saved, and the warmth of knowing that dog is alive because of you. Fostering is a wonderful and gracious cycle of blessings. You find their forever home, you walk away with tears in your eyes, but hope in your heart, because you will save another one. Claudia keeps in touch with Chuy’s new parents and this is what she says they had to say,

What You Need To Know!
W
ith the holidays approaching, the thought may have crossed your mind to adopt a new friend for that special someone or for your children as that “Big Present” under the tree. Being a responsible pet owner, you have decided it MUST come from a shelter. But you’ve never adopted a pet from a shelter before. Here are some fast facts that you may or may not have considered during your pastoral ruminations.

1. Adopting a pet for someone is harder than you think. Even if you have known the person their whole life, even if you have met every pet they have ever owned and you think you know their “type”, picking a new pet is a matter of heart and chemistry. Yes, careful thought should go into what size, activity level, breed, etc. that the person might want, but when it comes down to an individual, chemistry is important. If you really want to give someone a pet for a special occasion, first step is to talk to them about it. Correct: it will not be a surprise. But this is a good thing! You may find that a puppy is the last thing they really needed. Give them a gift certificate to your local shelter instead. Make a day of going to the shelter together. Let the chemistry overtake them. Let them have the opportunity to fall in love with the unlikely prospect and best yet, share with them the warm fuzzies you get from saving a life. 2. Ok, so now I have convinced you to forget the puppy with the bow under the tree (although a great suggestion is a stuffed representative with a big red bow next to the gift certificate), what’s next? Carefully research the major breeds in your area as those will likely show up as purebreds and
mixes at your shelter. Here in San Antonio, we have a large number of Labs, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Pit Bulls, Chihuahuas and “terriers”. Though most of them are crosses, it is a mistake to believe a pure bred dog cannot be found in a shelter. We see an astounding variety of purebred dogs come in each week. The thing to note is that each of the breeds above was bred for a reason. They each come with their own benefits and challenges. Coming in armed with the information is important in selecting a pet that is right for your household. 3. Next, visit your shelters. Make a day of it. If you have the ability or desire to make several trips that’s great! The “inventory” is a constantly shifting stack. Just because that special one isn’t here today, doesn’t mean you won’t find them tomorrow. Visit with the animals that interest you and spend as much time as you can hanging out with them. We’ll talk more about that in a minute. It’s very important. 4. Plan to spend at least an hour with the adoption staff. Most of the shelters have an adoption system in place that helps ensure that you have considered the things above. An adoption application will usually ask you things like: Where do you live? Do you own your home? What kinds of behaviors are you unwilling to tolerate? Do you have other

animals? Do you have a fence? Etc. Answer these questions honestly and talk openly with the counselor. Shelters create these applications with the desire to keep animals in their new homes! Retention is the number 1 goal of animal shelters. It does no good to adopt out an animal to a home only to have it returned, surrendered to another shelter or found wandering the streets. We want that animal in a happy loving home. So we want you armed with all the information we have. And sometimes that means we have to say, “You know, your application says here that you will not tolerate barking because you live in an apartment. We happen to know that the pup you selected is a member of a very yappy breed.” 5. Don’t expect to walk out the door with your new pet. Your pet may have to stay a day or so to finish up any needed medical things, in most cases spay/ neuter surgery. This will give you a chance to puppy proof your home, so take it as a blessing. On the other hand, it can happen that your pet is ready to go that moment and you leave with them and head straight to pick up all the new goodies from your local pet store. One token of wisdom: Adopt a shelter dog. If you can bring yourself to look past the cute puppy faces and into the mature dog faces, please do so. For all shelters, the placing of adult animals is far harder. The reward to adopters is limitless. Adult dogs often show unbounded gratitude to their new owners. They know what life has offered before and have something to compare their new heaven to. Adult dogs are either already potty {November 2014}
trained or take to it very readily with fewer lessons. Adult dogs can be easier to teach obedience to as they have already begun building a vocabulary and a sense of reasoning. One thing to note: The crazy over-excited dog bouncing at the bars, barking as you walk by or dragging you along the sidewalk is not necessarily the same animal that would happily cuddle beside you on the couch or walk leisurely beside you down your street. He is a product of the desperation that a shelter can produce. A shelter is just that, a roof over their heads and a meal. It is not a home. And they know it. The overwhelming exuberance that you see on your visits often calms down a few days after arriving in a warm home. Conversely, it is also possible that the quiet subdued dog that you thought would be perfect for your toddler will suddenly come out of her shell into a big playful puppy when she is no longer scared of all the stimuli around her. Talk to kennel staff about the animals when you visit. They often have more insight into the personalities, and sometimes history, than a 20 minute date can get you. Best of all Enjoy!

our cat’s body exists to manipulate and adapt to its “wild” environment, even though your cat may live indoors! Cats have sets of whiskers on their face that move independently from one another, whiskers on their legs and eyebrows which help navigate surrounding spaces, second eyelids, and rotating ears! Observing these features can help you realize how well adapted your cat is to thrive in their natural environment. Here are some tips to help meet your indoor cat’s mental, health and behavioral needs. • Lots of playtime! Cats possess a natural necessity to hunt, and you can provide opportunities for them to “play and pursue” with toys that simulate predatory behavior. Many toys mimic this type of behavior, particularly those that allow you to pull a mouse or toy across the floor. Entice your cat by stopping movement of the toy until he is ready to pounce on it, build that kitty anticipation! Just remember, prey runs AWAY from predators, so don’t throw toys towards your cat. Food puzzles, which allow your cat to bat around a toy and be rewarded with treats in the process, are also effective. Just remember to allow your cats to catch their “prey” to prevent frustration.

• Provide safe, secure places for your cat throughout your house. Cats prefer “perches” or places where they can survey an entire room from above, where they feel safe and empowered. Cats also love boxes, of course. Another alternative is their cat carrier. Utilizing cat carriers as safe spaces can potentially help reduce stress when traveling as well. Associate the carrier with positives such as treats, catnip, or soft blankets. Cat trees and scratching posts also provide perches and healthy scratching opportunities in one! • We know our feline friends need food, water, litterboxes, and places to eat and sleep. But we don’t tend to realize that cats like these different spaces to be kept separate! Try and keep food and water away from litterboxes, and maintain separate play and rest areas. 34
• Cats need consistency when it comes to being disciplined or trained. Depending on whether your cat was socialized to people at a young age, they may interact differently with people and pets than another cat. Your cat will tell you when it doesn’t want anymore affection (and vice versa!). Look for a twitching or “wagging” tail or for ears to rotate backward, this is your cat warning you that it’s done being touched. Also, play with your cats using toys, and pet them with your hands. Keep it consistent, and be persistent. They will learn that hands are for love and toys are for play, so when Aunt Trudy comes to visit, they won’t make her hands their scratching post. By providing opportunities for your cat to “hunt” and safely perch indoors, you are instilling a healthy degree of its natural environment into your home, which will keep your cat (and you) happy and healthy.
