Even if we don’t give forbidden food to them, remember that many dogs and cats will go treasure hunting in the trash can. Most vets say that nuts, bread dough, alcohol, onions, grapes, raisins and chocolates should be on your list to avoid. Pets also like to chew things we consider inedible. Keep all decorations on the tree and not on the ground. Kittens love to chew on holiday plants which could be toxic. For a list of those plants, consult your veterinarian. Make sure your pets enjoy a safe holiday season. A new feature this month will include a holiday event calendar which will list fun events to take your pet to in the month of December. veryone loves the idea of a puppy or a kitten tumbling out of a giftwrapped box. First, it is adorable. Second, the ensuing result is awesome. The recipient is generally thrilled with a response ranging from shocked silence to screams of joy. Unless you are the Grinch, this type of happiness is contagious, and who doesn’t love that feeling?
While the San Antonio Humane Society is not a secret society of Grinches, we do discourage pets as a gift. But don’t worry, we have a great alternative. First, we’ll talk about the risks involved in surprise pets, and then we’ll talk about a different way to go about the idea. Why not? The main reason this isn’t a great idea is because not everyone is ready for a pet. There is a difference between wanting a pet and being ready for one. Even if your close friend or family member has talked about wanting a pet for a long time, this doesn’t mean they are ready. Pets are a lot of work, and they are expensive – especially puppies and kittens. The cute factor can potentially fade after the ump-teenth accident on the carpet or multiple visits to the vet and pet supply store. As much as someone may want a puppy or kitten, they may not have the time or money to live up to the commitment. Aside from the business end of things like training and finances, the pet and new owner may not get along. Just like people, pets have personalities. Each pet is unique, and each personality mixes differently. We, like most people, look at a pet as an extension of the family 8
… or a new, long-term, roommate. Dogs and cats have varying degrees of need for attention and inclusion. If those needs are not met, pets can resort to destructive behavior (read: eating shoes, cabinets, furniture, or anything else you don’t want chewed). This is the main reason it is so important for a person to pick their own pet – and often, vice-versa. So what do you do if you are 100% sure your friend/ family wants a pet and is prepared for all of the responsibility? We understand that it would be less exciting to take the person to the shelter before the holiday, but we have an alternative that can still be exciting and rewarding. The San Antonio Humane Society offers gift cards. You can give the card to your special someone along with a home-made coupon for a trip to the shelter for the adoption. Or make a family outing of it. Another fun element is to wrap the gift card with a stuffed animal. The San Antonio Humane Society is always open the day after major holidays; which could be a fun outing. And who knows, the very next El Rey Fido could be adopted this holiday season! he Holidays bring a blizzard of cheer! And though we may not have snow and extreme temperatures this far south, there are definitely consideration for your pet’s safety that should not be neglected during the holiday season:
1. Temperatures: While it is true that Texas is not often besieged by heavy freezes and snow, it is important to remember that even mildly cold temperatures mixed with exposure, inadequate weight, or rain can be devastating and even deadly to our pets. Make sure pets have shelter if you can’t bring them inside and that the shelter provided is insulated for warmth and provides adequate cover from all sides. Best case scenario, a nice warm cozy bed at the foot of yours. 10
2. Travel: The holidays spell travel. Whether taking your pets with you or leaving them in the care of a responsible party, owners traveling can be very stressful for your furry loved one. SpaySA I
is a ‘good neighbor’ to pet owners
n June 1997, SpaySA opened its doors under the leadership of local animal shelters wanting to bring high-quality, affordable spay/neuter services to pets of San Antonio residents.
For the first 10 years, SpaySA was one of only a few public spay/neuter clinics in town, giving them a sizeable head start on fixing pets in Bexar County. Since then, SpaySA has sterilized more than 127,000 dogs and cats. But they know their mission is far from over. With an
estimated 150,000 stray dogs and cats still roaming our city streets, SpaySA continually looks for ways to reach pet owners about fixing their pets. Once located off I-35 at Laredo Street, SpaySA moved last year into a larger facility on West Commerce Street. They now operate a 7,000 sq. ft. spay/neuter clinic in the heart of the Westside and Southside neighborhoods they mostly serve. Thanks to this highly-visible location, pet owners now stop by SpaySA frequently to ask pet care questions. Cathy McCoy, executive director for SpaySA, says that about 70% of their first-time clients admit to never taking their pets for veterinary care prior to coming to SpaySA. In fact, many of these pet owners admit to knowing very little about pet care in general. SpaySA’s goals are to provide pets with spay/ neuter and wellness services and educate pet owners about future veterinary care. “These pet owners obviously want to care for their pets, but often lack the resources and information to do so,” says McCoy. “We can help them. And every time we do, we improve the chances the next generation will take better care of their pets too.” To reach their audiences, SpaySA uses a combination of media strategies, grassroots approaches, and bi-lingual outreach. You’ll frequently hear McCoy on the radio or television giving pet care advice. San Antonio’s Animal Care Services often provides volunteers to ‘block

walk’ neighborhoods about upcoming SpaySA events. And, SpaySA hosts informational booths at health fairs and flea markets around town to find pet owners who might need their affordable pet services. “There are many people who still get their pets from flea markets, their neighbors, and as strays off the streets,” says McCoy. “These pets are rarely sterilized and vaccinated like shelter pets. Yet these pets need to be vaccinated and sterilized before they get sick or contribute unwanted litters to their neighborhoods. The best way to do that is to meet people where they live.” While SpaySA serves as a valuable resource for low-income pet owners, they also partner with several animal groups to sterilize pets all over town. This year alone, feral cat groups have sent more than 2,500 feral cats to SpaySA to be fixed. Other local rescue groups count on SpaySA to provide an additional 500 spay/neuter surgeries annually for their adoptable pets. For 16 years, SpaySA’s mission has been to deliver spay/neuter and wellness services for pets in low-income neighborhoods in San Antonio. By establishing good relationships with local residents, they are ensuring future generations of pet owners will have the resources and information they need to care for their pets. Can I give him human allergy medication like Benadryl and what dosage? Thanks, —Tiffany M. A: Allergy Meds such as Benadryl, Hydroxyzine, Chlorpheniramine maleate are all for humans. They are at best 20% effective probably because they cause the dog to be relaxed and drowsy. It would be a good idea to discuss with your veterinarian about using fatty acids, allergy testing and food trials.
A: Fatty tumors (lipomas) are very common in dogs and some cats, the cause is not determined and they are typically benign. They usually do not make pets uncomfortable. Most dogs will not need to have the lipoma(s) removed unless it becomes too large or impedes movement. Possible causes are: Hormonal, dietary, weight, heredity. Traumatic brain injury Traumatic brain injury (head trauma) is a commonly encountered neurologic emergency, and one where the evaluation and treatment performed by the veterinarian initially examining the patient may significantly affect outcome. Common causes: vehicular trauma, falls, injuries from other animals, and gunshot wounds Brain injury can be divided in to two basic categories: primary and secondary injury. Primary brain injury occurs immediately and can include vascular damage, contusions, or lacerations (resulting from penetrating objects, bony fragments, or blunt force trauma). Skull fractures may or may not cause significant damage. Secondary brain injury occurs due to abnormal blood flow, hypoxia, or metabolic abnormalities of the damaged tissue, and can result in brain swelling and increased intracranial pressure. Intracranial Pressure (ICP) Basics The skull contains brain tissue, blood, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Maintaining blood flow to the brain is a primary goal of the body and is dependent on cerebral perfusion pressure. As the brain swells after trauma and the ICP rises, the body tries to overcome this by increasing the systemic blood pressure. Sensors in the body detect this and slow down the heart rate. Since it is difficult to monitor pressure in the brain in animals, recognizing this clinically can be extremely important when assessing and monitoring traumatized patients. General Assessment Pulse oximetry, blood pressure, ECG, baseline blood work, and arterial blood gas (in some cases) should be obtained
The Neurological Examination and Assessment After initial stabilization, neurological and orthopedic examinations should be performed. Mentation, posture, and cranial nerve examination are probably the most important assessments and should be frequently rechecked during treatment. Skull x-rays and MRI may help assess the severity of the trauma and determine additional treatment options.

Treatment Goals 1. Patients in shock should be treated with appropriate fluid therapy in order to stabilize the patient. 2. Conservative pain management strategies (low end doses, ideally reversible) so that mentation can be observed and ICP is minimally affected
3. Corticosteroids are not recommended in treatment of head trauma 4. Reduction of intracranial pressure (ICP) When to treat: • Cushing reflex (high blood pressure and low heart rate) • Loss of alertness • Midbrain signs (changes in pupil size, eye position, or loss of the “doll’s eye” reflex) How to treat: • Hypertonic saline (4-5 mL/kg over 5 minutes) draws fluid into the vascular space, improves perfusion and possibly immune support • Mannitol (1 g/kg IV over 20-30 minutes) draws fluid into the vascular space, improves perfusion, scavenges free radicals • 30 degree head elevation 5. Time! Severely injured pets can frequently still be saved. The dog whose MRI is shown survived and is able to walk again! Monitoring • 24-hour supportive care and monitoring of vital parameters • Frequent neurologic assessment. Dr. Cooper is a board-certified small animal neurologist at Mission Veterinary Specialists. She graduated with her DVM from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine & then completed a one-year small animal rotating internship at the University of Missouri. Dr. Cooper completed a three-year Neurology/Neurosurgery residency at Texas A&M in 2012 and was awarded the neurosurgery certificate in 2013.

Samantha became obsessed about three years ago with Corgis after seeing a picture of one. After college, she IMMEDIATELY began the search for a Corgi puppy, contacting several breeders, shelters and rescue groups. Unfortunately, most of the puppies had
already been promised to others months before they were even born. Her boyfriend emailed her a photo one day of this beautiful tri-colored puppy. SHE HAD TO HAVE HER! She told him to contact the breeder ASAP and put a deposit down on ‘Xena’ (her name at the time). He let her know a few days later that Xena had been sold and they had to keep looking. Of course, she was upset, but this had already happened multiple times before so she just kept on looking. A few weeks later, her boyfriend went to Dallas to visit family. It was taking a long time for him to get back to San Antonio and she kept calling him to see his ETA, since she had prepared a special dinner for him. Hours later, she finally hears a
knock at the door. She opened the door and was stunned to find her boyfriend holding the cutest Corgi puppy she had ever seen. Turns out, her boyfriend had bought ‘Xena’ and had told her she was sold so that she would have no idea she was getting her. The reason why he took so long to get back into town was because he had to drive an hour and a half east of Dallas to pick up the dog, then drive all the way back down to San Antonio. They ended up naming her Luna, a name she had picked out months before when she was coming up with adorable Corgi names. It’s almost been a year since Luna and Samantha began their journey together, and boy has it been an adventure! According to Samantha, “She was the perfect Christmas surprise!”

Christmas of 1999, Casey’s parents surprised her with a little kitty. There was a note in her stocking that read, “There is a box that was too big to get down the chimney. I put it in the garage. Love, Santa”. Casey ventured out to the garage, and there was a huge box with a big bow on top. Through the holes in the box, she could hear little meows. She lifted up the lid, and out came a tiny kitten. Casey immediately picked her up, took her inside, and named her “Angel”. Angel is now almost 15 years old, and Casey is so blessed to have her. ogs are five times more likely than humans to develop periodontal disease, which can almost be unnoticeable until it’s quite serious, and can also act as a gateway for other diseases to enter the body. Many pet owners think their dog’s teeth are fine because they eat and drink normally, but over two-thirds of adult dogs have some form of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a painful infection that can ultimately affect the liver, heart and kidneys through spread of infection in the body. Bacteria in the mouth causes inflammation of the gums, called gingivitis, and creates a film on the teeth, called pellicle. Within 24 hours, the pellicle hardens to become calculus, which is commonly called plaque. With daily tooth brushing, the pellicle can be removed before it hardens. Once it does harden, brushing can no longer remove the calculus, and a professional scaling and polishing is needed to remove it. If dental disease is left untreated the pellicle can cause inflammation of the gums and mouth. Inflammation by definition is painful, so any pet with dental disease will experience pain. In addition, the bacteria can cause loss of the bone that holds the teeth in place, which leads to tooth loss. This bone loss is preventable by cleaning the teeth before the bacteria can cause destruction, but once it happens, the loss is irreversible. Finally, these bacteria are the cause of bad breath, and cleaning the teeth can make your pet kissable again. So, what can we do to keep your pet’s mouth healthy and free of pain? At home, you should brush the teeth daily to remove the pellicle before it hardens. If your pet isn’t used to this, introduce it to them with flavored pet toothpaste and just brushing the front teeth with a soft-bristled brush. Gradually, over time, work your way to cleaning the teeth in the back. I recommend just brush the outside of the teeth,

as opening your pet’s mouth to clean the inside surfaces will be resented by most animals. For those pets that need extra help at home, or simply won’t allow brushing, there are other options: • Prescription diets help remove bacteria from teeth better than regular dry foods • Oral sprays and gels can help remove bacteria from the mouth • Look for a registered seal from the Veterinary Oral Health Council on oral care products Have your pet evaluated by your veterinarian once or twice a year to see whether a dental cleaning is needed and ask them for specific recommendations on preventative dental care. Proper dental care and cleanings will contribute to your pet’s healthier, happier, and longer life. Dr. Schnee graduated from Cornell University, College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. Q: I would really like to see if Marlene has any tips on how to curb or correct food aggression. We see it so commonly with our rescue dogs. It can become a big problem with large dogs being fostered in a home with other dogs. This sometimes causes a foster to be returned or lower their chances for adoption. —Laura B. A: Food aggression is a relatively common behavior. It can range from mild tension to serious aggression. All dogs in your home should be taught to back away and wait for food. Begin with an empty bowl, say “wait” and add a bit of kibble, release and let him eat. Repeat several times. Then incorporate walk-byes. While the dog is eating kibble approach with much higher value treats
(chicken or ham) and add it to his bowl. Slowly add distractions such as: a dog on leash or another human to both exercises. The dog comes to realize humans and dogs close to his bowl make good things happen. A: Barking is a form of dog communication and often little dogs talk too much. Figure out what sounds are triggering your dog to bark. n our November Edition, we featured an article by Dr. James Peterson, Director of Mission Pet Emergency, titled “Search and Rescue Dogs: Canine Heroes.” Here in San Antonio, we actually have our own Search and Rescue Group called the Alamo Area Search and Rescue (AASAR). I had the privilege to talk with Debra Parashak, a SAR Tech III with AASAR and asked her some questions and she responded in the following manner:
How did your organization get started in San Antonio? AASAR was created in response to the need for high quality volunteer search and rescue services in the South Central Texas area or wherever we are requested to assist.

How long has it been around? AASAR was started in 2008 and received our 501(c)3 non profit public charity status in 2009. Since that time , we have provided search assets to over 20 counties within the state and as far away as the Big Bend area in west Texas
What do you hope still to achieve? Our team is constantly evolving. We want to continue to grow in all aspects of search techniques. We have a long way to go to get the proper equipment needed to be able to be effective in all types of search areas, especially extreme wilderness searches where there are many challenges to overcome, especially in the areas of transportation and communications.
What have been your greatest accomplishments? Being able to help serve the great-

How can someone in San Antonio get involved in your Organization? First have the commitment it takes to be a Search specialist. Search and rescue is neither a hobby or sport. It requires hundreds of hours of training (usually 10-15 hrs weekly) and a large financial commitment since it is a free service that we provide. Good physical conditioning is also extremely helpful as most searches are not in the most hospitable terrains. If working in the woods is not for you, we also need help in areas of computer IT and fundraising. How does a dog become a Certified Search & Rescue Dog? It takes high drive dogs approximately 1-2 yrs to be ready to be certified depending on how much time the handler has to put into its training. K9’s are nationally certified every 2yrs. These canines are highly competitive and just fun to be around.

They All Said I was Crazy for Getting a Pet Door, but Now I Have No Worries! BY JOHN MOYA

hen I first started talking about getting a pet door, friends and family all said I was crazy. “Think of the animals you will be letting in! Think of the thieves that will have easy access to your home. You will not be able to sleep at night knowing that someone could crawl in and do very bad things to you or your family!” Between 3:30 AM and 5:00 AM, I could count on being licked in the face with the sound of whimpering in the background. Sebastian, my Golden, was telling me something…. he needed to go out! Being woken up from a good dream like this was not the way I wanted to spend the rest of Sebastian’s life. Sebastian was left inside in the nice comforts of my home while I was away at work. At that time, I worked at the airport and the daily commute was 35 minutes to my doorstep. This was before all the traffic lights and development on US 281. Upon arrival from work, he would run me over on his way to relieve himself. At times, I would find out that something did not agree with his stomach. An expensive call to
Stanley Steamers usually occurred afterwards. I received a phone call at work, “Sebastian ate the carpet—the whole carpet!” I can’t believe that I lived like this for years. I replaced door jambs from him scratching at the door wanting out. I replaced carpet due to his destruction. I have caught him in Kitty’s litter box (Yuck!). I have tried crating him only to give in to his whimpering. The loss of sleep was the last straw! Something had to be done! installed one of the best (if not the best) pet doors on the market that had dual security features and the maximum energy efficiency of any pet door on the market. Sleeping until I had to wake up for work was the biggest satisfaction that I got from it. Even Kitty got a pet door. Her litter box was moved to an empty closet and the poop eating contest was over for Sebastian. I never got an animal in the house that wasn’t supposed to be there. I didn’t have to rush home from work to see if there was a gift waiting for me to clean up. A would be thief would also have to think twice prior to entering. Judging from the pet door size, a German Shepard, Pit Bull, or a Rottweiler could be waiting. My friend’s and family’s concerns never occurred. t’sthat time of year again! Pull out the jackets and start the soup. It is easy to protect ourselves from cold temperatures, but what about our pets? Fortunately, there are many things we can do to keep our pets comfortable over the next few months. Some breeds are more equipped to handle the cold than others, so touch base with your veterinarian on which precautions you may need to take.
Depending on your dog’s health and lifestyle, she may appreciate a little less time outdoors. Shorter walks and quicker potty breaks may be a good idea for very young pets or those in their golden years. Make an effort to go outside with your pet, it will be easier to judge how cold she is and when she is ready to come in. If your pet is very active being cooped up indoors may not be the best option for them. Temperatures are the lowest in early morning and late evening, so try and schedule more time outside in the middle of the day. If avoiding extreme colds isn’t possible, a jacket may be a good option. Just be careful not to overheat your dog; the jacket should be loose enough to allow panting and freedom of movement. Every pet should live indoors, especially in cold weather. If you or someone you know has a pet that must live outdoors, make sure they have adequate shelter. This can mean a dog house, access to a garage, or extra blankets and bedding. Keep a close eye on their water dish, if it freezes your pet won’t have access to water. Pay close attention to your vehicle before starting it as well. Cats and dogs will sometimes lay on or near tires or even crawl under the hood to seek out warmth. Visually checking your vehicle or honking the horn before starting it should alert any sleepy visitors.

Antifreeze is a winter hazard that you may not be aware of. Antifreeze is poisonous to animals and can be fatal. Be sure to store yours where it cannot be reached by any animal. It is also good practice to check your driveway or garage for leaks and drips. Antifreeze is known to have a sweet taste and it is not uncommon for a pet to lap up a puddle that he or she may find. If you think your pet may have ingested antifreeze contact your veterinarian or call the ASPCA Poison Control. Unfortunately not all incidents take place when your regular veterinarian is open. If you aren’t familiar with the closest animal emergency room, ask your veterinarian for a referral. Locating one now can save you precious time in an emergency. Finally, don’t forget that nothing takes the chill out of a winter day like snuggling with your best friend. You and your pet will appreciate extra pets and hugs to stay warm over this holiday season! ain management in companion animals has made great strides in the past decade. Long gone is the thinking that our beloved companions do not suffer from pain and with that change has come the acceptance that we can improve their lives by recognizing and treating pain, just as we do in humans.
Perhaps the most challenging aspect of relieving pain is the recognition of pain in dogs and cats because the signs can be subtle. An alert pet owner often knows when their pet is in pain, but our pets are masters at disguising pain when they visit the veterinarian. Behavior change is the number one sign that your pet may be experiencing pain. It is important to communicate to your veterinarian if you notice any of the following: • Change of normal sleeping area or posture • Urinating in inappropriate places (usually cats) • Subtle decrease in activity or energy • Difficulty rising • Being short tempered with human or animal companions • Any change in behavior when there is no obvious explanation In years past, we may have attributed some of these signs to normal aging, but we now recognize that pain is NOT normal, even in elderly pets. The best pain relief for most conditions is a combination of methods and/or medications, called multi-modal therapy. Our pets do not have to suffer and multi-modal, balanced pain management can significantly improve their quality of life. Veterinary Practices that are committed to providing exceptional pain relief may offer any or all of the following: • Local or regional anesthetic blocks • Injectable medications • Oral medications • Laser therapy • Acupuncture • Physical therapy • Certified Veterinary Pain Management Professional on Staff (CVPP) Multi-modal pain management also generally provides more complete and longer lasting relief than using just one method or medication. Most of our companions

will need pain management at some point in their lives. Elective or emergency surgery, dental extractions, ear infections, eye trauma, abdominal discomfort, arthritis – these are just a few examples of where pain relief is needed. An informed and educated pet owner is the best advocate for securing appropriate pain relief for her pet. Pain control is not a one-size-fits-all deal. Some medications will work better for one pet than another, concurrent medical conditions and lifestyle need to be considered and fluctuations in pain level need to be addressed. This has become such an important and evolving science in veterinary medicine that practitioners can become Certified Veterinary Pain Professionals. These veterinarians are committed to advancing our understanding of the pain process in animals as well as helping provide comprehensive pain management in a variety of circumstances. Pain management can help almost every pet experiencing pain. Your pet WILL tell you when he is in pain, you just have to be looking for the signals and seek relief for your furry companion. Dr. Riva Heron attended the VirginiaMaryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (’95) and is also a retired Naval Intelligence Officer. She has practiced Small Animal Medicine in Virginia, Minnesota and Florida and Emergency medicine in San Antonio at I-10 Pet Emergency. Meet Hazel. Hazel is a schnoodle. She has more of the poodle coat texture. Hazel is new to the area and her mother brought her to Barbara’s Canine Clips ‘n’ Bows to be groomed. Hazel came into the salon shaking and acting very scared. Barbara, the groomer, tried to make Hazel feel more comfortable so she would be more relaxed for her grooming experience. Barbara states, “It’s much easier to groom a dog that is not afraid of being handled.” After being petted and talked to, Hazel did start to relax and she was overall much more comfortable by the time she left, and looking very pretty.

Sanford is home with his new forever family in time for the holidays
his is a story of hope, dedication and amazing people. This fall, SNIPSA [Spay, Neuter, Inject, Protect San Antonio] responded to a cruelty case -- a shaggy terrier mix dog about 3 years old was left outside with no food or water after his owner died.
It was August; the average temperature was near 95 degrees. A concerned neighbor called ACS [Animal Care Services]. Attempts to contact family failed. Malnourished, suffering from mange and hair loss, alone and rejected, he waited days in ACS. No one came. Learning of his plight, SNIPSA did not hesitate to help. They named him Sanford – he was scrappy, older and tired. His behaviors indicated a life spent tied up or confined. Making little movement and little eye contact, he seemed as if he wanted to disappear, remain

invisible. His tail rarely wagged. His body was there but his spirit was broken, even absent. After a week or so his foster family slowly began to gain his trust with treats. Time, patience, medicine, good food and love – all added up to Sanford readily greeting his fosters with the Sanford dance – front legs strutting, he’d give them kisses when they walked in. It took a couple months for the dance to appear and then, only for his fosters. After many weeks on the SNIPSA website, Sanford was finally adopted by a man in Illinois. The larger

obstacle was getting Sanford home. Many SNIPSA dogs fly to their forever homes, but Sanford was still fragile and putting this guy on a commercial carrier was not in his best interest. A committed volunteer learned of Pilots N Paws [PNP] through a Dallas rescuer. PNP is a group of volunteer pilots donating air travel to unite homeless animals with adopters.

What better co-pilot than one with four legs and fur! Joanne, PNP volunteer in Indiana, assisted travel coordination through an online message board. Private pilots can see if an animal going their way needs a ride home. Ground transport can be arranged, too. Just when it appeared no flights were going Sanford’s way, pilot Matt and his wife Michelle volunteered to take Sanford from Texas to Mississippi. Pilot Jeff would continue the journey to St. Louis where PNP volunteer Diane would drive him to Springfield, Illinois and his adopter, Greg. Sanford’s incredible journey began
with a concerned neighbor, and ended in adoption over 900 miles away. From Dallas to San Antonio, from Indiana to Mississippi to Missouri and finally Illinois, the generosity of amazing “dog” people working effortlessly in delivering Sanford home. A networking of organizations, volunteers, pilots and others made a difference in this dog’s life. Today, Sanford naps on the couch (and the bed!); rides in the front seat; and shares the occasional burger. Far from a lonely yard and the Texas sun, he saunters down to the lake with his tail held high! He likes to share pizza in the boathouse with Greg and loudly squeak his toy. The Sanford dance has even made its debut in Illinois! However, he’s not crazy doing his business in 30 degree weather. Yes, today, Sanford is surely living the high life in the Midwest.
