LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER The heart that pumps the San Antonio economy is the military. One could argue that military dogs give their entire heart to help their human colleagues stay safe and protected. We at Texas Dogs & Cats-San Antonio are proud to give recognition in this issue to these dog heroes who are put in harms way to ensure our freedoms. We honor four retired dogs in our photo shoot at Randolph Air Force Base, and in another article we feature Lackland Air Force Base’s dog adoption program. More kudos go to those dogs who help our local police departments in their public safety efforts. We focus on one such partnership between ex-marine, Officer David Prieto, and his furry partner Smokey, of the Live Oak Police Department. Texas Dogs & Cats-San Antonio, hope you enjoy the remainder of your summer, due in part to the valiant efforts of the dogs that serve and protect us. Sincerely, Dana Raimondi Tell our advertisers you heard about them in Texas Dogs & Cats-San Antonio! that is the question.
A
s a veterinarian, a question I hear often is: What do you think of declawing? Or should I declaw my cat? This month, we will talk about what exactly that surgery is as well as the pluses and minuses of having it performed on your pet. Declawing, or more precisely known as onychectomy, is a surgical procedure performed by a veterinarian. The kitten or cat is placed under surgical anesthesia. The veterinarian then carefully removes the toenail, last pad, and smallest “toe bone” from each toe in the cat’s front feet. Sometimes the back feet are also done. This is an amputation process and, although in most cases it’s elective, is very traumatic for the cat. Although declawing cats is a surgery that has been done for several decades, it has progressively in the past twenty years gone out of favor with
American veterinarians. In many foreign countries, the practice has been outlawed. In America, many veterinarians refuse to do the surgery for elective reasons. Why has this surgery been frowned upon? • 50-80% of full declawing had some complication following surgery • 75-90% of patients receiving a full declaw showed lameness, or pain on walking following surgery • Swelling and incisional infection, including bone infections with severe results The one reason that is not listed above is behaviorally. Why, with all these complications, would somebody want to have this performed on their kitty? Most people have, reasonably, an intense dislike for the normal cat behavior of scratching. Cats scratch. They scratch people in aggression and play. They scratch furniture to show ownership and

was founded in late 2012 by a group of very passionate dog foster parents that spent day and night pleading for animals that were at risk to be euthanized. Day in and day out, dogs were listed and there was no place for them to go. SA R.O.C.K.S.’s mission is to bring a positive change to San Antonio’s homeless pet population by not only providing safe and loving homes for these animals, but also starting programs that focus on the education of the community, so that future generations will continue to fight for the homeless pets in the Alamo City. S.A. R.O.C.K.S. is an all-volunteer run, non-profit organization that has to this day saved over 200 dogs. The volunteers are very passionate about saving a dog’s life and are dedicated to help make San Antonio become a No-Kill City. With no physical shelter, S.A. R.O.C.K.S. is completely foster-based and relies on the amazing foster volunteers that open their heart and homes to the dogs. By working with such wonderful foster families they are able to provide loving temporary care until they find a well matched home. S.A. R.O.C.K.S adoption events are scheduled almost every weekend at different locations around the city to try and give the dogs in foster care a greater chance at finding the perfect home. S.A. R.O.C.K.S. has partnered with different businesses around the city where they have regular monthly adoption and fundraising events scheduled. “We take our adoption events very seriously and want to provide our foster parents with every possible way of getting their foster dog adopted to a good home. If this means being out in the heat every weekend, then so be it,” said Kathy Moore, Event and Volunteer Director. S.A. R.O.C.K.S. does

allow out of state adoptions and have even had a few spreading out as far as Massachusetts and Ohio. The next step for S.A. R.O.C.K.S. is to build a shelter and increase the number of dogs that are rescued from the city kill shelter. The goal for them is to build a shelter next year so that more lives can be saved. “If we can save over 200 dogs without a shelter, imagine how many more lives we could save if we had one,” said Telma Garcia, Marketing Director. It’s not an easy job, but S.A. R.O.C.K.S. is more than willing to fight for the good of all the homeless dogs in the city. They are always in need of volunteers, fosters and donations. HOME SWEET HOME part 1
Deciding to Hire a Professional Pet Sitter BY CATHY VAUGHAN
W
hen traveling, finding reliable pet care for your furry family members is usually at the top of everyone’s list. It is a difficult task because, unlike our human two-legged children that may need childcare, our pets don’t have the capability to tell us where they like to go best, who does the best job caring for them and what their favorite things to do are.

When deciding what’s best for you, your family and your pets, you can break it down to two options: at home care or boarding outside of your home. Each of those options has a myriad of choices available. Maybe you’ve never even considered in home care as an option for your family and pets. Pet sitting is very new as a profession. It began in the 1980’s, approximately 30 years ago. While the first pet sitting businesses were started then, and the first books on professional pet sitting were written in the late 1980‘s, it wasn’t until early 2000 that pet sitting, and professional pet sitters became a more widely recognized part of the pet care industry. To give you an idea, when our pet sitting business started in 1998, there were 6 businesses listed as pet sitters in the phone book for the entire San Antonio area including the surrounding communities. (online searching wasn’t an option then!). Today there are more than 50 businesses within San Antonio and surrounding areas, and the number is still growing. What is a professional pet sitter? Simply put, a pet sitter will come to your home to care for your pets. Pet sitters provide the majority of services, including some things like pet taxi and trips to the dog park, at your home. In the past, the only option for in home care was to ask a friend, neighbor, or kid down the street. They may or may not follow through with what was asked, and often had minimal knowledge on what to look for in cases of animal illnesses and stress. Thankfully today, professional pet sitting provides the pet owner with resources to a knowledgeable pet care professional who can provide individualized attention for your pets in your home. While most pet sitters do not hold Veterinary degrees or are certified animal nutritionists, they are well versed
in basic pet care, illnesses and overall well being of companion pets. Many pet sitters are certified in Pet First Aid & CPR too! This sets them head and shoulders above what most friends or family members can do for your pets should something unexpected happen while you are away. Professional pet sitters focus on providing the best care possible for your pets in your home while running a small business. Pet sitting businesses are not run as a hobby, but as a viable income source - they are part of the professional pet care industry. They are small business owners and entrepreneurs. As such, their focus in on high quality customer service. They make certain that the care of each of their pet clients is at the top of their priority list. While the option of asking a friend, neighbor, or kid down the street is still there, professional pet sitters give the pet owner peace of mind in knowing that “something else” isn’t going to come up that takes priority over your pets and your home. Your pets and home are the pet sitters top priority! In addition, should something happen that wasn’t right with the care, a professional pet sitter will address your concerns with you and work to make any issues right. How uncomfortable is it to have that discussion with a friend or neighbor? While each business is different, there are some general basics of care that you can count on from your pet sitter: • Appropriate feeding as described and outlined by you • Fresh water available per your direction • Appropriate attention, exercise, potty breaks depending on the pet • Attending to obviously ill pets and seeking appropriate medical attention through your direction • Cat box maintenance • Medications administered (be sure to
Part 2 in September will cover topics as the importance of bonding and insurance, how much will it cost, and when should I book? {August 2013}
ask your pet sitter if they provide oral and/or injectable medications and if they medicate dogs and cats and any other specific medication requirements you may have) • Mail pick up • Plant Watering • Basic home monitoring for obvious hazards/emergencies Pet sitting services can be singly owned and operated, or can be staffed by a group of people providing care under the same business. In either case, the pet sitting service will usually have a geographically based service area - whether that is as small as one zip code, or extends to an entire metropolitan city. For this reason, the pet sitter your friend uses, may not service your neighborhood, but referrals from friends and coworkers are a great place to start your search for a qualified pet sitter! If that pet sitter cannot help you, chances are they know someone that services your area and can provide a referral. Many pet sitting businesses also belong to local networking groups. These networks help the businesses provide reliable references and often provide continuing education on topics important to the industry. See the list of “Questions to ask your pet sitter,” and always do your homework in researching the company that will be in your home even if from a direct referral!

ment, the kennels went to a demo in Fredericksburg and that’s where I first met Leo. He had a reputation of being “not so nice” so of course no one had told me and I was sitting right next to him like it was no big deal. Shortly after that, I started working with Leo every day and in October of 2012, we became a certified working team, so it’s been a little less than a year.
They were trained as Patrol/Explosives dogs. Harry and Teri conducted daily random anti-terrorism sweeps across Randolph AFB, ensuring the safety of the base populous and aircraft assets. Both dogs were deployed across the world, including Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, providing bomb detection capabilities. They also ensured the safety of the President and Vice President, as well as the Departments of Defense and State with explosive detection. Harry and Terri served for nine years and were both adopted by the families of their respective handlers-Harry, by {August 2013}
SrA George Garcia, and Teri by Sgt. Johnathan Royce. Kevin was assigned to the Engineer K-9 company 5th Engineer Battalion, FT. Leonard-Wood, Missouri. He was deployed to Iraq in 2007 and 2011 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he provided bomb detection capabilities. On his first mission of his second deployment, he was in a Stryker vehicle that was destroyed by an IED. Fortunately, there were minimal injuries to the occupants. Kevin was adopted by Col. Christine Erlewine and her husband Lee last year. Leo was assigned to the 802nd SFS where he conducted more than 110 health and welfare inspections across FT. Sam Houston and Lackland AFB. He also searched more than 25,000 commercial and privately owned vehicles leading to the seizure of an accumulated two pounds of marijuana, 20 grams of cocaine and 3 grams of heroin. Leo has been adopted by his handler Staff Sgt. Rachael Lopatesky who provides us with the following interview: Q: How long have you and Leo been together? Sgt. Lopatesky: In June of 2012 I changed duty stations from Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., to JBSA-Lackland, Texas. While I was awaiting dog place-
Q: How are military dogs selected and specifically Leo? Sgt. Lopatesky: Military Working Dogs are chosen through a very stringent process. A specific team of highly qualified Behavior Analysts and Trainers go to different breeders around the world and select dogs upon the desired traits. In the dog world, only the “best of the best” make the cut. Leo was chosen for his outstanding ability to utilize his keen sense of smell during narcotic detection. Leo’s drive for meaningful love and praise is a pivotal point in how great of a dog he was to the military, 802nd Security Forces Squadron kennels and myselfespecially myself. Q: Why is Leo being discharged early? Sgt. Lopatesky: Leo has quite a few medical issues, he has an extra vertebra in his mid-lower back that is causing him a lot of pain, and also has hip dysplasia and arthritis in both his hind legs and significant soft tissue damage from all those orthopedic issues. Q: What are your plans for Leo for his “golden/retirement” years? Sgt. Lopatesky: I am actually getting the opportunity to adopt Leo myself, my plans for him are to relax, play in the grass, hang out with my other dogs, Jake and Kelly, lounge on the couch, eat treats that don’t taste bad...maybe some bacon...maybe not...I mostly just want to see him smile everyday while being collarless in my backyard.

heartmurmurs
A
s dogs and cats age, it becomes more likely that your pet’s doctor will tell you they hear a heart murmur during a physical examination. What does this mean? What causes it? What, if anything, can be done about it? Today I am going to discuss what a heart murmur is, what the causes may be, and guidelines for seeking additional diagnostics.
A heart murmur is simply an additional heart sound that is not the normal “lub dub” of the heart beat, but rather a swishing noise. Information about what may be causing the murmur is possible by listening to the timing of the murmur, the intensity of the murmur, and the region over the chest where it is PHOTO COURTESY ANNIE RAY loudest. In cats, because their hearts are smaller, it is often more difficult to distinguish over which valve the murmur is loudest. The cause of all murmurs is accelerated and often times turbulent blood flow. If the heart has any region where there is a sudden acceleration of the blood being pumped, a murmur can be caused. Physiologic or innocent murmurs are heart murmurs caused by some acceleration of blood that is not due to a disease or pathologic process. They are very common in cats, certain breeds of dogs, and athletic dogs. They are fairly common in puppies and kittens as well. Typically they are softer murmurs. The most common cause of murmurs in dogs is a valve leak. As dogs age, their heart valves can start to thicken and lead to a poorly closing valve. When the heart beats, the valve should be closed, but gaps can cause a jet of blood to rush backwards and cause a heart murmur. This disease is called chronic valve disease, and may require medication. Valve narrowings are less common causes of murmurs. In dogs, this murmur is usually present from birth, caused by a congenital narrowing of the aortic or pulmonic
valve. In cats, it is often secondary to abnormal mitral valve motion causing a narrowing below the aortic valve. In both situations, when the heart beats, the narrowing at or below the valve causes an acceleration and turbulence of blood as it leaves the heart, very similar to river rapids. These murmurs are usually quite loud, and should be investigated further. If your veterinarian hears a murmur, they may recommend further evaluation. The gold standard evaluation of any heart murmur is an echocardiogram by a board certified cardiologist. The echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart that shows the anatomy, function, and blood flow patterns as well as calculations of pressures in the chambers of the heart. This information helps definitively diagnose the cause of the heart murmur, as well as guide any therapy so it can be tailored to the individual patient. By working with your veterinarian, you can better assure that any problems with your pet’s heart will be diagnosed and treated appropriately. Dr. Katie Meier is board-certified in cardiology. She graduated from the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. She completed a year-long rotating post graduate internship at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed her residency in Cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital in 2006.

irst and foremost, I’d like to take a second to recognize that our military working dogs are truly amazing companions. They are the only members of our military who do not choose to be soldiers, and yet, they serve willingly and with a full heart to protect their handlers and the thousands of men and women who stand by their side.
Military working dogs have saved tens of thousands of lives over the years, and I can’t think of better way for them to retire than with a family who will spend every day loving them and thanking them for their service. This is where you could come in; did you know you can adopt a retired military working dog into your family? Lucky for us San Antonians, Lackland Air Force Base is home to the Air Force Security Forces Center, Army Veterinary Corps, the 341st Military Working Dog Training Squadron, the Holland Military Working Dog Hospital, and a military working dog breeding program, which means San Antonio is the central hub for everything related to military working dogs. Lackland Air Force Base is also the official adoption site for all military working dogs, so you live in the best possible place to adopt a retired four-footed solider. Most of the dogs available {August 2013}
for adoption at Lackland Air Force Base are either young dogs who failed to meet training standards or older dogs who have completed their service. Either way, you’ll be welcoming a highly intelligent and professionally trained companion into your home. Because of their possible combat history and military training, be prepared for a rigorous adoption process to make sure your military working dog and your family are the right fit. So how does the adoption process work? Well, it all begins with an email to mwd.adoptions@us.af.mil to request an application. From there you will be contacted to set up an appointment to meet with the dogs and have your application reviewed. As everything at the kennel revolves around the pups, I’d plan to make a day of your appointment. Arrive at the gate early because you have to get a pass to enter the facility; you will also need to bring a current driver’s license, proof of vehicle insurance, and current registration. Next you’ll spend about an hour with someone who is reviewing your application and interviewing you and your family. Finally, after it is determined your family will be the right fit for a retired military working dog, you’ll get to meet the heroes. This is the hard part; try to pick just one pup that you want to welcome into your family. Once you find your new companion, change your mind 5 times, decide you want to take them all home, and then return to the one who captured your heart from the first time you walked in the door, you move on to day two. After the new love of your life has had his/her final visit to the onsite veterinary clinic and made ready for departure from the base, it’s time for you to pick him/her up! Again, allow for plenty of time as the adoption process is extensive and you will be required to fill out lots of paper work. Remember, these dogs are family and heroes to all of the handlers and staff at the base, so be understanding and patient as they work diligently to make sure their family members are find the perfect new home. You’ll also need to bring your own leash, collar, and kennel for when you finally get to take your new companion home. Trust me, it will be worth all of the time in the world when you get to honor and love a hero and when you see that love unconditionally returned. For those that have the desire to adopt a retired military dog, but need financial assistance to do so, there are organizations that can help. One such group is the RMWDAO, founded in 2011 by Lisa Phillips, a former vet tech in the Army that worked with military dogs. RMWDAO helps families by offering financial support with their veterinary bills and transportation costs. See Retired Military Working Dog Assistance Organization at rmwdao.org for more information. 25
does your pet feel
emotion? BY SHANNON PIGOTT, CVPM, ACC
oes your pet love you? There has been a debate for some time about whether or not pets’ experience emotions such as love or sadness.
as sentient beings. Sentiency is the ability to feel, perceive or be conscious, or to have subjective experiences. Biological science, as well as common sense, supports the fact that the animals that share our lives are feeling, sensing beings that deserve thoughtful, high-quality care. The care that is offered should provide for the animal’s physical and behavioral welfare and strive to minimize pain, distress, and suffering for the animal.”
On one side of the line drawn in the litter box are those who believe pets are only able to experience primary sensations such as fear. On the other side of the line are those who are confident that pets feel real secondary emotions such as jealousy, love and happiness. While the idea of pets experiencing secondary emotions is controversial for some, it points to a larger question: If they do experience many of the same emotions as people, does caring for a pet mean protecting and nurturing their mental and emotional wellbeing as much as their physical health? If you ask the American Animal Hospital Association, the answer is yes. In late 2012, the association well known for its stringent accreditation program for veterinary hospitals officially acknowledged the view that animals are feeling, sensing beings capable of sentiency in a formal position statement. The position statement reads “The American Animal Hospital Association supports the concept of animals
In addition to their stance, researcher and director of the Animal Behavior Center in Queens, N.Y., Robert Defranco, confirmed in an ABC News report in November of 2012 that animals do feel many of the same emotions experienced by their human counterparts. The research and acknowledgment of prestigious organizations confirms what many pet parents already understand. Pets experience feelings as demonstrated by their behaviors. Perhaps a cuddly canine becomes standoffish when she knows her pet parent is leaving for the day? She may also exhibit sad behavior such as walking away from her owner after being scolded. Or, she may exuberantly and happily rub against an owner’s leg after being separated for a period of time. By recognizing that pets experience life similarly to humans, pet owners can rethink

k-9 W and his
e interviewed Officer David Prieto of the Live Oak Police Department to share his experiences working with his K9 partner Smokey. Officer Prieto has been in law enforcement for approximately 10 years and served for 8 years on active duty as a Security Policeman in the US Air Force. He has been with the Live Oak Police Department for 2 ½ years. Smokey is a 4-year-old German Shepard that was born in Holland and trained here in Texas. Officer Prieto responded to our questions in the following manner:
How long have you been working together? Smokey and I have been partners now for approximately 7 months. We are the first K9 team in Live Oak in some time. We recently started a new unit and are in the process of adding K9 resources for the agency. Our second K9 team just completed training and certification. Who provides you with your K9’s? We received our K9’s from a company named G4S Solutions located in South Texas. They are a company that provides global services for homeland security, law enforcement and security. How long is the training process for the K9’s and who provides the training? Typically it takes between 4-6 months of training for a K9 to be proficient enough to be partnered with a han28
dler. The handler generally attends a 6 week long training program to become certified depending on the purpose of the K9. Smokey is a dual purpose dog, meaning he is certified in the detection of illegal narcotics and patrol work. Currently we are certified to state and federal standards through the National Narcotics Drug Detection Association (NNDDA) and US Customs and Border Protection. Even though the initial training is completed, both Smokey & I maintain continual training on a weekly basis to remain proficient in both duties of narcotic detection and patrol duties. This is done by conducting joint training with surrounding area police departments with K-9 Units which meets every week. What are the advantages of having your K9 partner? K9 Units are force multipliers for an agency. They provide
&
d gs cats Texas
resources and capabilities that are extremely important. The use of K9’s to detect illegal drugs is unparalleled and a critical part of our agency keeping a handle on drugs in the community. The ability to track people is a significant capability the K9 provides as well. Whether it is locating a fleeing felon, a burglar in a business, or a missing child, the K9 assists us with each of these situations while minimizing the potential injury to officers. Additionally, the use of a K9 during situations involving large crowds, often brings compliance with minimal need for extra officers. The bond between human and canine working as a team to protect the citizens of our community is unparalleled to any other public safety asset or team. A K-9 team relies equally on each other, both on and off-duty. Smokey can sense any change in my behavior, which will put him in an alert, or relaxed state. My responsibility as a handler is to know when Smokey has located something by his body language and trained indicators. I am also responsible for Smokey’s health and basic needs. While working, I monitor his time working and his behavior in order to not over exhaust him, especially in the Texas heat. Do you have any specific “notable” stories with your K9? Since the team has been working the road, Smokey has contributed to multiple narcotic arrests and assisted in locating suspects who have fled from officers. On a recent
{August 2013}
instance, Smokey and I assisted another city with locating suspects who fled from police because they were involved in committing various crimes which include residential burglaries. Smokey also has contributed to over $25,000 in drug seizures that were taken off the street. We are actively involved in public education efforts. We do this in Live Oak and surrounding communities we support. We recently participated with the Windcrest K-9 Unit in a school demonstration at the Windcrest Elementary school. The demonstration was integrated with the student’s curriculum about genetic traits by using our Police Canines. An example used was their natural abilities as a canine to sniff out narcotics and their physical features. Finally, any advice you would offer any other police forces that would be thinking about using K9’s? Many agencies shy away from starting K9 Unit’s because of the fear of the unknown. The reality is that if given appropriate funding, training and support, the units are not that difficult to start up. They are huge assets to the officers in the field and the community in helping accomplish the mission. Agencies should ensure they appropriately outfit their vehicles with safety equipment ranging from heat alarms, to notification modules that let officers know when dangerous conditions exist for the animal. Further, the sustainment of ongoing training and maintenance are keys to the success of the program. We are extremely proud and excited about the program that the Live Oak Police Department now has to serve its citizens.

what to expect if you visit a
veterinary
emergency facility A
t some time, most animal lovers will visit a veterinary emergency hospital to care for an ill or injured pet. Whether the pet ate a poisonous plant or was attacked by another animal, emergency pet hospitals provide an important service because they are often the only veterinary care available nights and weekends. Taking your pet there though, can be a stressful experience for any animal lover. Follow these tips for a great next visit: Have your pet’s medical information in hand Accurate information helps the ER doctor diagnose and treat your pet accurately. Most emergency hospitals will ask you to complete a lengthy questionnaire about your pet’s history at home and any medical conditions he has had in the past. Bring any medications your pet is taking with you. Focus on being patient and relaxed Emergency visits take time, just like in human hospitals. In the ER, the most severe injuries and most critically ill patients are treated first. If you’re the owner of a critically ill or dying pet, you certainly want immediate medical attention. For those pets just feeling a little under the weather, a veterinary technician will usually perform a brief assessment prior to the doctor’s evaluation. Trust me; if your pet needs life-saving treatment or pain relief, care will start right away. We tell clients all the time – be happy if your pet is waiting for care because it means he is the most stable (least ill) patient in the ER! Financially Prepare Emergency care can be costly depending on the severity of the pet’s condition. The average bill for an emergency hospital visit is approximately $300, but in critical situations can be much higher. Why? These specialized emergency pet hospitals are equipped with some of the same equipment as a human hospital and they operate at all hours of the night and weekends. Remember – they are there for you at 3 am, on weekends and holidays. Most offer payment alternatives through companies like CareCredit or Wells Fargo credit. If finances are a
32
concern, ask the reception staff to help you apply. When recommended, approve diagnostic testing Before your pet can receive the best and most appropriate care, we need to know what we are treating. Sometimes we can get a good idea from the history you provide and from the physical examination, but often those are just starting points. In some cases, x-rays, ultrasound and labwork are important tools to make sure your pet is treated appropriately. Be sure to follow-up with your regular veterinarian The veterinarian you see on a regular basis knows you and your pet best. It may seem obvious to you that your pet is better, but sometimes it takes a veterinary professional to make that determination. Most emergency pet hospitals will send the medical record of your visit to your regular veterinarian. Just call and make an appointment with them the day following your ER visit. Dr. Riva Heron attended the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (’95) and is also a retired Naval Intelligence Officer. She has practiced Small Animal Medicine in Virginia, Minnesota and Florida and Emergency medicine in San Antonio at I-10 Pet Emergency. Q: Will you recommend something for chronically itchy paws? I would prefer something natural but we will accept any help we can get. Thanks, —Alice and Webbie A: Chronically itchy paws are most often seasonal allergies but can also be related to contact allergens, fleas, yeast infection, food and airborne pollens (mold spores, dust mites, etc.) Treatment options include: • Allergy testing • A fatty acid supplement such as Allerg3, Dreamcoat, ANT’s Skin Support capsules • Malaseb wipes used on the feet when coming in from outside
• Weekly bath with Ketochlor/Aloe vera shampoo • Trying a hypoallergenic diet such as Hill’s Science Diet Z/D or Royal Canin’s HP for 6 weeks • An over the counter antihistamine such as diphenhydramine • Steroid only when necessary to stop the itch/ scratch cycle Most importantly, we cannot cure atopic dermatitis (atopy), but we can control it with various treatments. If the allergies are seasonal the pet should be much better during the colder months of the year. Some allergies can last year round.
