LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Our October cover story highlights the nature of anthropomorphism. When you give animals human attributes, such as wearing clothes, you anthropomorphize them. This carries many important implications. For example, thinking of your pet in human ways, renders it worthy of moral care and consideration. This is reason enough for us to condone the practice of dressing up your furry loved ones. Sociologist’s may continue to debate the positive or negative impact of the animal, but for the rest of us, we view our pets as furry children and it is totally natural for us to dress themespecially for Halloween. Most of us ladies play dress up, starting with our dolls and eventually our children. I believe it is a natural progression to include our beloved pets in this desire to clothe those that we love. In addition, we also feature the heroic story of Rowdy, who as a blind dog became an inspiration to the many people that he aids as a service dog. Finally, for all of us who ever witnessed stray dogs on the side of the road and wondered if anyone would ever help them, we have the answer- Katies Roadside Rescue. This spotlight rescue, as its mission is to help and rescue those dogs found abandoned on the streets of San Antonio. We at Texas Dogs & Cats hope you have a “Boo”tiful Halloween and hope you can scare up some nice treats for your pets. Sincerely, Dana Raimondi

not trick

BY CATHERINE LARIA

{pettraining}

or treat, but trick and treat! I

n the spirit of Halloween why not teach your dog a new trick! Training various tricks is a very beneficial activity for you and your pet. Sure you’ll be a hit entertaining your family at Thanksgiving, but more than that, you’ll be building a system to help teach your dog anything throughout his life.

For most people, training their dog is all about teaching them household manners. Don’t jump, come when called, sit, and stay are some of the most common problems people have. But after many years of working with different owners I’ve learned the major problem lies more within the relationship between owner and pet. Do these owners love their pet? They absolutely do, but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about the relationship your dog has with you as their leader, how you teach, and how they learn. For the most part people who don’t train for a living have a hard time getting their pet to do some of the most basic commands, not because the dog is stupid or because they feel they don’t know enough, but because they just don’t understand how their dog learns. Trick training, to me, is one of the easiest ways to build that relationship and one of the fastest ways to develop learning skills within your pet. Where to begin? The most important component in training is the reinforcement. Would you go to work tomorrow if you knew you weren’t going to get paid? How soon would you quit? If you look at the things we ask our pets to do as “their job” shouldn’t they get paid to do it as well? The key is figuring out WHAT payment works best. Your dog will tell you if the reinforcement is good enough to keep him engaged in working for you. Food or toys are excellent ways to reinforce.

8

Even if your dog isn’t overly enthusiastic about one, you can build on it. Next, find something your dog already likes to do. For example, my dog always gives a big stretch when he gets up (front legs down, butt way up in the air). Now he does it when I say “Take a Bow”. Since he was already offering the behavior, I just started naming it when he was about to do it. Then I delivered the reinforcement immediately after he assumed the position. Because I use very highly valued rewards it took him no time to realize this was a cool job and he was happy to repeat it when asked. Some tricks will be easy to come by while others may take more finesse and time. Just remember a positive, high valued reinforcement, delivered timely; marking the behavior you want, will increase the likelihood of that behavior being repeated. If you’re having trouble getting started, join a Clicker/Trick class. It’s fast and fun and a great way for you and your pet to build that learning/teaching relationship. Catherine Laria is the owner of K9 Country Club in Bulverde, Texas. She has been training and traveling with her dogs now for almost 20 years.

halloween safety for your pets

T

he time of the year is coming, All Hallow’s Eve, All Saints Day, Halloween. Call it what you will, October 31st is a day for revelry, dressing up, and candy! Humans typically take this day to act crazy and have a great time indulging themselves on crazy amounts of sweets.

But think about the holiday from your pet’s perspective: Strangers and even friends wearing masks and dressed in unfamiliar costumes, the doorbell ringing over and over again, flickering flames inside pumpkins and other scary decorations. To keep your pets safe on this holiday, consider the following recommendations: • First and foremost, keep all chocolate and other candy out of your pet’s reach, and teach your children that candy can make pets sick. Chocolate, especially, can be poisonous for animals. The chemical in chocolate, theobromine, that makes humans feel good can cause a medically and serious high heart rate, and hypertension in especially small dogs, cats, and birds. The 10

great taste means that most animals will eat it readily. While a small amount of milk chocolate is typically not an emergency, a large amount of milk chocolate or a small amount of dark chocolate can be. If you suspect chocolate poisoning, call your local animal emergency center. If your pet has any of the following symptoms, consider it an emergency: Dilated pupils, pounding pulse or heartbeat, excessive drooling, excessive, uncontrollable energy, excessive panting, inability to get comfortable or be still, unresponsiveness, loss of consciousness. Candy wrappers and lollypop sticks could also cause choking or intestinal blockage. If you suspect your animal is sick, please contact your vet or emergency clinic.

• Confine your pet to a quiet part of the house away from the front door if you are going to be opening it repeatedly for trick-or-treaters. This can prevent a protective dog from trying to bite, and can prevent a frightened cat from slipping out under your feet. • Make sure your pet has on an updated ID tag and micro-chip, just in case he/she does slip out while you are greeting Spiderman or Cinderella. If you do lose your animal, remember to file a lost and found report with your local shelter that same day and visit everyday. • Keep candle-lit pumpkins out of reach so they can’t get knocked over by a swinging tail or a swatting paw. • Use caution if you dress up your pet in a costume. Some pets may try to chew on the costume. Supervise at all times. If the costume seems to cause stress or discomfort, take it off. In Texas it is often a toss-up as to what temperature we will be looking at. It may be dangerous to put heavy costumes on your pets on a hot Texas day. • If you’re trick-or-treating with your dog or attending a costume party, keep in mind that he/she may not find it as much fun as you do! Pets can become frightened or aggressive due to the unfamiliar costumed patrons and unusual smells, sights, and sounds. Ask yourself honestly if your dog is the type that will enjoy it. If you aren’t sure or would be unable to leave, it might be best to leave them home. If the party is at your house, make sure you have pets by giving them treats of their own—commercial a safe zone set up for four-legged inhabitants that hudog or cat treats OR use the excuse to make something man partygoers cannot enter. yourself especially for them using healthy ingredients. * Remember, your pet is not a prop. Katie’s Roadside Rescue

K

atie’s Roadside Rescue started late 2010 with the rescue of a mom and her puppy that were dumped beside a road. They would not leave the spot their owner had left them at, with a bowl of water and a pile of dog food on the ground on a cold November night.

WRITTEN BY KATIE BOGGS, FOUNDER OF KATIES ROADSIDE RESCUE.

The mom would run out toward every SUV that went by but no other kind of vehicle. My tears would not stop flowing as I watched her. I spent hours coaxing them in my car. She kept staring at the road. I got them vetted and found a wonderful rescue to take them to. Then there was another dog a few weeks later, and then another, and so KRR was formed and obtained 501C3 status in March of 2011. Unfortunately, there are often dogs dumped on dead end roads and throughout the San Antonio area. I could not stand to watch their plight of being ran off, left to fend for themselves, starve or get run over. I learned to collect empty containers and frozen dinner trays because they are perfect to leave food and water out for those I can’t catch or simply don’t have room for. My vehicles today remain stocked with bowls, water, food, leashes and many other necessities. My microchip scanner is now part of the contents of my purse, replacing makeup and other usual items. My rescue is based out of my home and foster homes. All rescue dogs are part of the family, are socialized, housetrained, and fully vetted. We like to stay around 20 but sometimes that number goes higher because, quite frankly, how can you drive by a litter of pups in

12

the ditch? KRR has taken in around 40-50 dogs each year since we’ve started and adopt out 30-40. We do not accept owner surrenders nor pulls from shelters. There are a few goals left to accomplish this year. The 6 kennels in the yard need a tin roof to replace the tarps that are currently covering them. The next goal is to finish fencing two remaining runs outside of the main yard and build a small shelter in each one. Fencing material and labor is needed to finish this as well. Third – I would love to collect donated dog houses of all sizes and offer them to all the dogs out there that have no shelter and are left out in the elements. I am very proud of what KRR has done and is doing to change the lives for the dogs we can help. Over the years I have gained wonderful supporters and friends who believe in KRR, the mission and in me. I try to remain transparent with what I do, what I spend and what I need. I am forever humbled when I wonder how in the world I will be able to accomplish something and the support is For more information right there. I thank God, about KRR, visit their my husband, and everyone website at www.krrtx. for giving me the ability to org or email them at do this work. krrtx@hotmail.com.

Rowdy’s vision of courage HIS STORY TOLD BY HIS OWNERS SCOTT & JULIE CRUGER

14

&

d gs cats Texas

R

owdy was a stray who found our family in March of 2005. We believe that he was no more than two years old at the time. Of course, we fell in love with him right away, with his adorable face, energy, and personality.

Four years later, in a horrible accident at our ranch, Rowdy was run over while sleeping under a cattle trailer. Somehow he was saved from death, but the tragedy claimed both of his eyes. After prayers and tears, we brought Rowdy home from the veterinary hospital knowing that things would be different around our home and we would now be his eyes. We knew that life had changed for all of us; however, no one could foresee the immeasurable impact Rowdy would bestow upon every individual he would come into contact with from this point on. Rowdy adapted, and learned to use his remaining senses with accuracy and speed. Shortly after arriving home, this amazing dog had learned his way around our house and yard. He now listens very intently, smells like crazy, uses touch when needed, and his mind, his intellect, his brain…well, he uses that to remember. He has no pity for himself and wants from others only love and affection (and treats)! Rowdy has an enormous amount of passion, love and

{October 2013}

irresistible tenderness to give to everyone. This is our Mission with Wags Across Texas. Love, Affection, Inspiration After completing our training and getting our certification in September 2011, we started our visits. We went anywhere and everywhere we could. Hospitals, Rehabilitation Centers, The Fischer House at Fort Sam, Mass adoption at the Bexar County Courthouse, Home Depot kids workshop, and all the special ‘events’ and fundraisers that our group was a part of. Through all these visits, we found that Rowdy’s talents really came out when he was with children. He loves them all, senses their innocence, and somehow realizes when they have special needs. He understands their love for him and is always receptive to their touches, hugs, and kisses. While the kids are asking questions about Rowdy’s disability, we answer by explaining and spreading knowledge about treating others with disabilities with compassion,

empathy, and understanding. Since Rowdy is a rescue, we also teach responsibility towards adopting instead of buying their pets when they get older, even having them take a pledge. Shortly after ‘graduating’ almost 2yrs ago, we found a place for our regular visits with a special needs kids group at Community Bible Church. We visit the same class every other week and he has learned all the kids by smell, voice, and touch. At the same time, we take on visits to other places as they come to us. We are truly blessed with an amazing dog. He should not have lived through the accident, and yet somehow did. We share him with any and all kids we can to spread his love and let them all know that life truly does go on. Wags Across Texas is our home group. paws patio on the BY JENNY PULS

Ok

If you’ve never attended Paws on the Patio, here’s what to expect. First, costumes for both humans and doggies are highly encouraged, especially if you will be entering your pup in the most competitive costume contest of the year! Costume contest entries are $5 per photo entry with all proceeds going back to our SAHS shelter pets. Now what do we mean by photo entries? This is the fun part! At Paws on the Patio, photo sets have been constructed and decorated for you (if you choose) and your pet to pose in front of and have your picture taken! Pictures will be displayed, judged, and then we’ll award prizes! After the judging, you get to take your photo home as a small memento of the great evening you had with your pup! While the costume contest is a big part of the evening, that is by no means all that is going on! When you are not posing for photos, sit back and enjoy a fabulous meal with your dog. That’s right, while you’re being treated to a delectable dinner, so will your pup! Every year, the staff at Canyon Café makes sure to spoil each and every dog that dines on their patio by preparing a 3-course doggie dinner, complete with a tasty frozen dessert. With dinner done, you may think you’ve seen it all and it’s time to head home, but you would be oh so wrong!

you Halloween fiends, the time has come for Paws on the Patio! Whether you’re a two-time costume contest champ, or this will be your first year attending our famed event, we can’t wait to see you and your pups out on the patio on October 28th from 4-8pm at Canyon Café in the Quarry Market!

We’ve set up the perfect area to relax on the patio in the company of your costumed friends and, wait for it, be serenaded with music from your favorite local bands! That’s right, for the first time ever, we’ll have live music all night long! You’ll get to hear the sizzling sounds of Los Crazy Bats, Festus and Mackenzie, Sandoz, and the Langton Drive. Good food, good music, and good company, what more could you ask for in an evening? Let me guess, you thought of one more thing that would complete your evening; one of those cool caricature artists to document your dashing dog in all of his costumed glory. DONE! Lynda Helton of Furkids Art will be hanging out on the patio to complete custom pet caricatures for your enjoyment and will donate a portion of her proceeds to the SAHS. So, are you ready for Paws on the Patio? We are too! From all of us at the San Antonio Humane Society, we can’t wait to see you on October 28th for one of our favorite evenings of the year! Periodontal Disease in our pets

D

o you know what evils lurk in the mouth of your beloved furry friend? Smell their breath to find out. Infected gums, known as Periodontal Disease (PD), has reached epidemic proportions in our pet population.

Estimates are that more then 85% of pets over four years of age have some degree of PD that needs treatment. This is primarily because teeth are hidden in the mouth and not examined on a daily basis, and because our pets tend not to complain from mouth discomfort. For pets with PD, as with many other diseases, the last thing to disappear is their appetite, even in the face of considerable pain. The importance of oral hygiene in our pets cannot be overstated. Visualize an oozing smelly wound on the skin of your pet about the size of the palm of your hand. This represents the amount of inflammation and infection in a medium-sized dog with advanced PD. Extensive research on humans reveals that many other diseases are related to chronic dental disease. Bacterial infections of the blood stream from PD can lead to diseases at other sites in the body such as the liver, heart, kidneys, lungs, brain and pancreas. Specific diseases that can result from PD are cardiovascular disease, stroke, infective endocarditis (infected heart valves and muscle), pneumonia, low birth weight, diabetes mellitus and certain forms of cancer. These conditions are the tip of the iceberg in the relationship of oral disease to systemic disorders. What can you do to keep your pet healthy? First consult your veterinarian and ask for a comprehensive oral examination. For some pets with early PD, a professional dental cleaning with subsequent diligent

home care will restore a healthy mouth. For many others, the disease is so advanced that the only way to re-establish oral health is by doing multiple tooth extractions or other lengthy procedures. Teeth are like icebergs were 2/3 of their structure lies below the gum line, so dental x-rays of the entire mouth may be needed to evaluate the situation in its entirety. Depending on the capabilities of your veterinarian you may need to be referred to a veterinarian with specialized training, equipment, and expertise in veterinary dentistry to safely perform special procedures like root canals, orthodontics, and oral surgery. How can you get started today? LIFT the LIP! Have a good look in your own pet’s mouth and if you see any redness to the gums, tarter build-up, you notice a foul odor, or find pain make an appointment with your veterinarian. Good oral care is an essential component to your pet’s health. Dr. Kiklevich is a member of the Dentistry & Oral Surgery department at Mission Veterinary Specialists. She received her DVM from Cornell University and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners with certification in both Canine and Feline Practice. National Feral Cat Day

is October 16th

an Antonio has a cat crisis. It is estimated there are over 200,000 outside cats roaming our streets and backyards. Due to our warm climate they breed year-round here so one female can produce over 36 kittens in 16 months.

We have a mix of feral, stray, and friendly outside cats. Feral cats are unsocialized cats who avoid human contact. Strays are lost or abandoned cats who will become more fearful of humans the longer they remain outside. The saddest situations are the pets who desperately want a home and family again and have never had to survive on their own. Apartment complexes are “feral factories” due to the large numbers of unsterilized pets left behind when their owners move. The San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition (SAFCC) is an all-volunteer, non-profit group that educates and facilitates Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). TNR is the most effective, humane method of controlling outside cat populations. Cats are trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated against rabies and ear-tipped for identification. After recovery, the cats are returned to where they were trapped. Once cats are “fixed”, they stay healthier and provide free rodent control for the area. SAFCC teaches free classes to the public

on how to trap cats safely – for the trapper and the cat. All class attendees can get traps on loan for free - forever! They also receive a discounted spay/ neuter rate at all participating clinics. There are almost 5,000 citizens trained who volunteer their time and money to perform this community service – but many more are needed. National Feral Cat Day (NFCD) is always on October 16th. Since the first NFCD in 2000 established by Alley Cat Allies, hundreds of nonprofit organizations have formed to educate communities about feral cats with more than 300 cities endorsing TNR. We are fortunate that our leadership has dedicated itself to becoming nokill – no easy task for a city this size! We have a mayor that is supportive of humanely reducing outside cat populations through TNR, as well as Animal Care Services and our spay/neuter clinics: the S.A. Humane Society, Animal Defense League, SpaySA, SNAP, and Hill Country Animal League in Boerne. The needless

suffering of cats and kittens should be everyone’s concern. So this October 16th, think about what you can do to help our cat crisis: 1. If your pet is not spayed or neutered, please use one of our low cost clinics to get that done. 2. Are you aware of outside cats in your neighborhood? Feed them and get them fixed! There are grants for free spay/neuters depending on your zip code, or the cost is $20 if you come through SAFCC’s training class. 3. If you just want to help the cause, all donations to SAFCC go towards spay/neuter subsidy to one of the partnered clinics to keep the trapper cost at $20. 4. Adopt a rescue! For every cat or kitten adopted, there are 10 more on the streets waiting to take their place. www.sanantonioferalcats.org Helpline: 210-877-9067

For our most “Boo”tiful Halloween contest, we attracted thirty dressed up cat and dog contestants. The ten dollar entrance fee went to support the San Antonio Humane Society. The Halloween contest, conducted on our facebook site was a neck and neck battle between Avery and Odie with thousands of people voting. The winner, Avery, wasn’t decided until the last few minutes when Avery pulled ahead at the end. Third place went to Cheeta the cat.

chihuahua: a San Antonio favorite

BY SHANNON PIGOTT, CVPM, ACC

A

San Antonio favorite, the Chihuahua is a big dog packed in a small frame. She’s alert, curious and busy. Able to adapt to a wide variety of living conditions and eager to go with you everywhere – even in your purse! The Chihuahua is the smallest of all dogs breeds and has two coat varieties: smooth and longhaired. Originating in Mexico, they were bred for companionship and are known for their big, erect ears and prominent large eyes. The Chihuahua’s personality could be compared to a terrier’s, as she is fearless and devoted. The Chihuahua is a generally healthy breed with an average lifespan of 12-14 years, but does have some behavioral and health concerns pet parents should know about to help ensure a long and happy life. She tends to look at new people cautiously and be aggressive, fearful or snappy if not socialized properly. She has a big bark and equally willing bite with larger dogs or people she does not know well. Is it all worth it? Of course! She’s full of personality, and you love her for it! She is a loyal and alert member of the family that demands attention at all times. Her small size makes her an excellent traveling companion. Concerning her health, she is prone to the same diseases and parasites as all her other canine companions. In addition, she has a higher risk for some important geneticallylinked diseases. There is a general consensus among canine genetic researchers and veterinary practitioners that the conditions described herein have a significant rate of incidence and/ or impact in this breed. That does not mean all Chihuahua’s will have these problems; it just means that she is more at risk than other dogs. Eye Problems Not many things have as dramatic an impact on your dog’s quality of life as the proper functioning of 32

his eyes. Unfortunately, Chihuahuas can inherit or develop a number of different eye conditions, some of which may cause blindness if not treated right away, and most of which can be extremely painful! It is important to have yoru veterinarian screen her for Glaucoma, Dry Eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) and cataracts at each visit starting in adulthood. Glaucoma and Dry Eye can be particularily painful and should be a top concern for pet owners. Heart Disease Heart failure is a leading cause of death among Chihuahuas in their golden years. Most heart disease in dogs is caused by weakening of a valve. A heart valve slowly becomes deformed so that it no longer closes tightly. Blood then leaks back around this valve and strains the heart. Pets with heart valve disease (sometimes called mitral valve disease) have a heart murmur. If heart valve disease is diagnosed early, medications can often be prescribed to prolong her life for many years. Chihuahuas are also susceptible to a condition called Patent Ductus Arteriosis, in which a small vessel that carries blood between two parts of the heart does not close shortly after birth as it should. This results in too much blood being carried to the lungs, fluid build-up, and strain on the heart. Outward signs may be mild or you may see coughing, fatigue during exercise, weight loss, shortness of breath, or weakness in the hind limbs. We listen for a specific type of heart murmur to diagnose this problem during his examinations. If your pal has this condition, we may recommend surgery to close the problematic vessel. Knee Problems Sometimes a Chihuahua’s kneecap (patella) may slip out of place (called patellar luxation). You might notice that she runs along and suddenly picks up a back leg and skips or hops for a few strides. Then she kicks her leg out sideways to pop the kneecap back in place, and she’s fine again. If the problem is mild and involves only one leg, your friend may not require much treatment beyond arthritis medication. When symptoms are severe, surgery may be needed to realign the kneecap to keep it from popping out of place. Much of what you can do to keep your dog happy and healthy is common sense, just like it is for people. Watch her diet, make sure she gets plenty of exercise, regularly brush her teeth and coat, and schedule an appointment with your veterinarian when something seems unusual. Be sure to adhere to the schedule of examinations and vaccinations recommended for her, because some of the conditions she is prone to develop are very painful or life threatening. With the right dose of love, socialization and great veterinary care, she will live a healthy and happy life. {October 2013}

any pets have owners that rely on the Internet when it comes to animal health information. Remember, your pet’s veterinary team is always your best source of medical information. Here are some hints to help make sure you are looking at a good and trusted site online instead of someone out to sell you something!

1) When searching for animal health information online, look for sites that have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine who either writes or oversees the content going onto the site. 2) Even though other animal “experts” are out there, often their skills are in breeding, training or other aspects of animal care. When they cross over to discussing medical issues, there can be serious consequences for the pet. 3) The Texas Veterinary Medical Association (www. tvma.org) has a good website with lots of pet owner resources. Nationally, www.healthypet.com from the American Animal Hospital Association and www. veterinarypartner.com are other great sources. 4) When looking for a veterinarian, many people will turn to online review sites, like Yelp.com or Angie’s List. In fact, almost 80% of people trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. 5) If you choose to use a review site to find a veterinarian, look for sites that provide a balance of good and bad reviews as opposed to all of one or the other. 6) Read beyond the words in the reviewer’s posting. Is there really a problem with care or service or have emotions and a focus on money obscured the real issue?

34

7) Look at the profile of the reviewer. Do they review many businesses or was this a onetime posting? 8) Whenever you have questions, ask your veterinarian first. Your veterinarian and his/her team are here to make sure that you and your pets have access to the very best in care. 9) Check out your veterinarian’s website for helpful information you can trust. Many have searchable articles about pet healthcare issues, as well as up to date veterinary news alerts and links to help you and your pet. Dr. James Peterson is a 1992 graduate of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. He began his career in Emergency Veterinary Medicine in San Antonio, and has practiced both Emergency and Small Animal Medicine in San Antonio for over 20 years. He is currently a director of Mission Pet Emergency in Northwest San Antonio and owns Hill Country Animal Hospital & The Palms Pet Resort in Helotes, TX.

AFTER:

Meet Ricki. Ricki came to Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming in April with his sister, Lucy, and their puppy-mama, Angie. They have been together for 11 years with different styled cuts in the past. Aeriana, armed with her trusty grooming book, showed Angie several clip options that would work for Ricki & Lucy. Angie commented that no other groomer had ever done that for her and she chose the “Town and Country” style, plus Ricki got his very first goatee. Angie advised Aeriana that Ricki had been diagnosed with seizures, which was noted in the file. Unfortunately, Lucy passed away five weeks after her first spa date with Aeriana; however, Ricki continues to visit the Pet Spa, enjoys getting “pampered” on his spa dates with Aeriana, and loves his new ‘do.

bestcare how do I provide the

S

o many of us consider our pets members of our families, we even develop our own special language to communicate with our furry family members. But, one thing to remember is that our pets can’t tell us when something is wrong or they are ill. Therefore, we have the responsibility to monitor their health. When caring for pets and their families, there are several veterinary visits early in the pet’s life for vaccines, deworming, preventive medicine, spay/neuter, and pet care education. Then the visits become, hopefully, annually or when the pet is sick. Since each pet is an individual, it is important to realize that we cannot always predict how, when or if they will get sick. Therefore, instead of just taking Spot in for his vaccinations and picking up heartworm prevention, consider that visit his Annual Health Exam and consider it as an opportunity to find out how he is doing from the inside out. Expect your veterinarian to take time to provide the best care for you and your pet, but also be prepared to provide much needed information since your pet can’t tell the Dr. himself. The annual exam starts with a complete history from you about how things have been going with your pet since the last visit. Be prepared to answer questions about appetite and water intake, activity level and any changes in food or medicines. The physical exam is a thorough evaluation of your pet, including evaluation of the eyes and ears, heart and lungs, abdomen, joints and mobility, and skin and coat. If you observe any abnormalities at home, be sure to mention them to the veterinarian so that they can concentrate on potential problems areas that may appear normal during the exam. A complete annual exam also includes diagnostic testing for parasites such as heartworms and intestinal worms. Your pet should be tested for heartworms annually, even if they are on preventive medication. This area of Texas has many positive cases of heartworm disease annually. A fecal exam is also an important part of health screening. Monthly preventive medications cover the most common intestinal worms, but there are several other types of intestinal parasites that your pet can be exposed to at the park, at the boarding kennel, even on

{October 2013}

your walks through the Green Belts of San Antonio. Finally, blood work and a urinalysis are very important screening tools that many people wait to have done when their pet is ill. There are several advantages to having these tests done early and routinely. One is your veterinarian can find abnormalities before they cause your furry family member any clinical signs or discomfort. Another is with annual blood work, your vet can monitor trends in changes in the values that are measured. Routine blood work typically consists of a CBC (Complete Blood Count) and Blood Chemistries. A CBC can show signs of infection, anemia, or other blood cell abnormalities. Blood Chemistries evaluate organ function, such as kidney and liver, glucose levels to check for diabetes, thyroid level, and electrolytes. The urinalysis evaluates kidney function and bladder health. Because your pet is a member of your family, take the annual exam as an opportunity to find out as much information as you can to help prolong your pet’s life. A healthy pet is a loving and happy member of the family. Dr. Shara J. Carlton is the Medical Director at VCA Health Associates Animal Hospital. She is a Texas native who graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. She practiced in Texas, Germany and Virginia before joining the US Army Veterinary Corps for 4 years. She is happy to be back in Texas practicing veterinary medicine in the great city of San Antonio. 37

for my furry family member?

Q: My dog came home from a run in the yard and appears to have hurt her tail. It’s limp and when I tried to lift it up, she cried. I’m not sure what could have happened to her. Do I need to take her to the vet? —Venus C. A: Yes, you do need to seek veterinary care for your dog’s tail. The tail could be fractured, have ligament damage or be sprained. Many dogs that run a lot, like hunting dogs, tend to develop inflammation in that area. Your veterinarian may want to radiograph (x-ray) the area.

Q: When we take the dog to the dog park, people bring bowls for water for their dog and all the dogs drink out of the same bowl. What are the health risks to our dog if he also drinks out of the same bowl as many of the other dogs? —Thanks, Louella A: It would be best not to allow your dog to drink from a common water bowl at the dog park. There are viruses, parasites and certain bacteria that can be spread by water contamination. Always bring your own bowl and fresh filtered water for a good walk or run.
