about our

covermodel Rex

R

BY FRANK HAEGELAND / PET GALAXY

ex was picked up by San Antonio Animal Control after being found injured on the side of the road in the spring of 2017. He had been hit by a car and his hip was broken. Luckily, he was chipped, and an Animal Control officer called the registered owners.

8

COVER AND INTERIOR PHOTOS BY RENEE SPADE PHOTOGRAPHY

The owners, however, had given Rex away a few months earlier to a couple who answered their Craig’s List advertisement, and they could not remember the new owner’s name. They agreed to pick Rex up and try to find him a new home. Bulverde Area Humane Society (“BAHS”) was the only no-kill shelter at the time that would accept a dog who needed hip surgery. After surgery, he needed exercise and pain meds around the clock so BAHS asked their Volunteers if someone could take him home for five weeks to convalesce. Monika Czerwinski brought him home and was soon smitten with his big golden eyes gazing deeply into hers. “Really”, she says, “he holds your gaze as if he’s attempting a Vulcan Mind-Meld.” “By the end of his five weeks stay”, she continues, “I knew he was already in his forever home.” Three-year-old Rex needs more play and exercise than the two older rescue dogs he shares a home with. Two days a week he plays with friends at Pet Galaxy and has learned how to interact appropriately with other dogs and people. He’s a much more balanced and confident dog with the lessons he’s learned from play. And a tired dog is a good dog! Please see full page ads opposite the puzzle-page and on the back cover of this magazine regarding Pet Galaxy’s brand new Doggieland® Daycare with Pickup and Delivery service directly from and to your home – door to door.

C

ooler weather has arrived and with that comes all the fun of the holidays! The holidays are just around the corner and although table scraps are not recommended for your four-legged friend, we all know pets sometimes sneak a few bites from the table. It can be tempting to share! And while the best diet for your pet is a pet-specific diet recommended by your veterinarian, the occasional treat can be given. But be aware: special care should be taken to prevent your pet from eating foods that can be dangerous to them. With so many delicious dishes within your pet’s reach, the following is a short list of some of the most popular–and potentially harmful–items on the table:

Onions Stuffing and green bean casserole: who doesn’t love these holiday staples? While delicious to people, these two foods can include onions, which are toxic to dogs and cats. Onions can result in gastrointestinal upset and liver toxicity. Keep those furry friends safe and avoid sharing these prepared dishes. Macadamia Nuts & Walnuts These nuts are a big no-no for your animal companions as they can cause neurologic and gastrointestinal issues. Pies When you think of fall, it’s hard not to think of these delicious desserts. Pumpkin and pecan pies can contain high amounts of sugar, nuts, and spices (such as nutmeg) that can make your furry friend sick. Unseen Handouts Slipping treats beneath the table can be especially appealing for the youngest members of the family, but visiting relatives can be guilty too. Keep an eye out for your pets, monitor the foods they receive, and inform relatives and friends about food restrictions for your pet.

{December 2018}

Poinsettias and Mistletoe According to the ASPCA, poinsettias are not fatally toxic to your pet, but to avoid stomach upset, it’s still a good idea to keep this plant out of your pet’s reach. Mistletoe ingestion has the potential to cause cardiovascular problems and gastrointestinal upset.

BY SAN ANTONIO HUMANE SOCIETY ASSOCIATE VETERINARIAN, LESLIE HOPES

Bones Bones may seem like the perfect treat for your pup but behind that savory chew lurks a serious danger. Bones (even cooked bones) can cause vomiting and diarrhea. In extreme cases, bones can puncture the stomach or intestines resulting in one very sick pet.

While we may believe indulgence is all in good holiday fun, overeating poses a serious threat to your pet: pancreatitis. A common cause of pancreatitis is the consumption of a high-fat meal, a.k.a a holiday feast! Signs associated with pancreatitis include, but are not limited to, vomiting, diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, fever, and loss of appetite. Opt to offer your pet safe and festive holiday-themed treats instead of table scraps. Ask your guests (especially your youngest guests) to help you keep your pets safe by not feeding them from their plates, and limit the goodies you do decide to share with your pets. There are many alternatives that you can offer your pet, especially as the gift-giving holidays approach. There are many resources online that will offer pet-friendly recipes, local pet bakeries that sell festive, homemade treats, and puzzle toys that will keep your pet busy as dinner commences. As with anything, especially when it comes to caring for your pet, do your research! The holidays are meant to be fun and the tips mentioned above can help keep your special celebrations fear-free and safe for everyone in the family. Happy Howl-idays!

oralcancerindogs O ral cancer is fairly common in dogs and a variety of benign and malignant tumors can be found in the mouth. The most common benign tumors are papillomas (wart-like masses) and epulides that arise from the periodontal ligament (the connective tissue that attaches the teeth to the underlying bone). The most common malignant tumors are melanomas (tumors of pigment-making cells), squamous cell carcinomas (tumors arising from the lining of the oral cavity) and fibrosarcomas (tumors arising from connective tissue). tipstokeepyourdogsafe DURING THE HOLIDAYS

BY MARLENE RING

I love Christmas!! Every year my home is ‘over the top’ decorated for the Holidays!! The big QUESTION is: Is my house safe for my dogs? Dogs are fascinated by the smells and textures of all the new things that are now appearing all over the house. This is normal curiosity. Here are a Few Tips to Keep them Safe Make sure your tree is in a sturdy stand and attach it to a window or wall with a clear string. Many years ago I had an adolescent Golden Retriever, he pulled the Christmas Tree over onto himself. At this point I wasn’t concerned about many broken ornaments…my concern was my wonderful dog being traumatized. He was fine, he moved very quickly and was only hit by part of the tree. It happens….so be prepared. My tree is secured with a screw that has been placed on the side of my fireplace. I also have other trees secured to air vents and curtain rods. No one knows except me. Look at the round ornaments on your tree. Do you think they look like a ball to your retriever? Yes, it does! The problem is the dog ingesting it, and ingesting things like ribbons, gift wrap, tree lights, or even chewing on those extra electrical cords we have everywhere during the holidays. Remember one emergency trip to the veterinarian can ruin the Holiday Fun!

24

Stay away from decorating with candy canes, pop corn or cranberry garlands on the tree. The smells are just too tempting to your dog. Leave the leftovers for the humans Rich fatty foods can cause stomach problems for your dog. Caution guests about feeding your dog scraps from the table. See my Blog on 8 Holiday Foods That are Dangerous for Your Dog. Also don’t let Fido eat all of his treats or gifts on the same day. Save some until later.

Management Use a baby gate to keep your dogs out of the Christmas room when not being supervised, or put your dog in a crate. Another idea is to put a play pen fence around the tree. Holidays can be hectic. Don’t forget to relax and spend quality time with your dog. Finally, it is a good idea to keep your local veterinary emergency room phone number handy with driving directions to the location. Be prepared…just in case. dearbigharry Thank you for letting me share a bit of my heart with you at this holiday season. It will be our first holiday season without Big Harry, so this season is filled with extra-special memories of him. For those who, too, will be missing someone special, let’s connect our hearts as we remember the gifts they gave us in their existence. I wanted to start my Christmas season in sharing a letter to my Big Guy... a letter which might resonate with some of you as you too remember and miss a love whose not a part of your physical world for this time of year.

Your dog needs exercise! •

All dogs need plenty of exercise. If they don’t get it, they will develop bad habits such as chewing on furniture, socks and shoes, or dig up flowerbeds. They may even get depressed, and become really mischievous and unreliable.

Spending 30 minutes to an hour walking to the park with a dog walker, although better than nothing, doesn’t provide much exercise for a pooch, and receiving a picture of where your baby pooped may make you feel better, but it doesn’t do much for your dog.

Introducing Pet Galaxy’s Doggieland® Daycare and Door to Door Service •

For roughly the same money you would spend on 30 minutes for a dog walker’s time, we will pick up your fur-babies from your home in the morning, transport them to Pet Galaxy’s large Doggieland® play park for the entire day, where they can enjoy the park and play with compatible, like-minded dogs. Once they have experienced enough play, they will come inside for an all-important nap before they go back out for more fun again. At the end of the day, we will bring your happy and satisfied babies back home.

Prices start at $24.75 for all day daycare plus $5.00 each way for the bus ticket — flat rate. Our initial target areas are primarily neighborhoods north of Loop 1604 along the Hwy 281 corridor, including Stone Oak, Encino, Canyon Springs, Timberwood Park, Johnson Ranch and Bulverde/Spring Branch.

On request — for an extra charge, we can even serve lunch and/or dinner, administer medications, provide Bath, Brush and Nails service and/or a full groom.

And, of course, if needed — your pet is always welcome to spend the night (or longer stays) with us.
