Marlene Ring, of Pawsitive Solutions, warns us of the dangers of Thanksgiving foods that may be potentially dangerous to our fur babies. Dr. Caitlin Contreary, of Mission Vet, tells us how our pets can avoid the harmful effects of too much sun. Kim Smith, of Pawderosa and Willie & Roo, writes about a new way for your pets health needs to be delivered to your home. On the topic of health needs, Roger Rodkey, informs us of the benefits of CBD oil for your pets. Our pictorial this month features readers pets that they are thankful to have in their lives. FOXY

H

ello! My name is Foxy and I’m a Shiba Inu mix, I think. I was adopted twice from the San Antonio Humane Society before finding my forever home. Can you believe I was returned? My first adopters said I wouldn’t stop chasing their cats. Well, I didn’t want to hurt them and, isn’t that what dogs do?

BY FOXY SMITH

Anyway, my parents adopted me into my forever home way back in 2006. Time flies, doesn’t it? As it happens, they were just starting Pawderosa Ranch and I was brought on board as a founding member. That was the smartest move they could have made! Pawderosa Ranch is a Shiba Inu Mix-, Veteran-, and San Antonian-owned dog resort with 2, soon to be 3, locations in the San Antonio area. We offer Lodging, Daycare, Training and Grooming. Our motto is “Your Pup, Our Priority” and we achieve that through customized care and enrichment. We focus on activities that address the needs of each individual pet and benefits them mentally, physically and socially. This holistic approach creates a well-rounded pup and improves all aspects of their life. Pawderosa Ranch is proud to have always welcomed dogs of all breeds and life-stages. Speaking of life-stage, I just turned 13 in July! Feel free to send belated birthday gifts to either Pawderosa Ranch location… I tell you what, though, I am not slowing down. I still enjoy my favorite activities like playing tug, lounging in the pool, riding in the car, getting belly rubs, and eating treats. Yes, I’m quite spoiled. Twelve years ago, I quickly adapted to my role at “The Ranch” as head Cowpup where I would greet my friends at the door, take them back for a fun day of play, and send

them home happy and tired. Though I still visit my friends at Pawderosa, I am now Top Dog at a more traditional Ranch: K-bar-M. Here I spend time with my brothers Panzer (cover model November 2017) and Wonton (cover model November 2016), Stringbean the horse, KitKit the barn cat (who I would like to chase if given the chance), Belted Galloway cattle (“Oreo cows”), thousands of honeybees, and lots of chickens (they’re my favorite). I haven’t taken the time to learn how to herd, but I sure like running through the flock and watching those chickens fly! After one or two passes though, I get bored with them… If you’d like more information about my Ranches, give Pawderosa a call at 210. 404. 9941 or check out our website at www. WeLoveYourDog. net. If you find us on Facebook www. facebook. com/ PawderosaRanchDoggiePlayandStay you’ll see lots of photos of my friends. You’ll also see photos and videos from our monthly themed Pawties. They are so much fun and we get exposed to unique experiences that we typically wouldn’t find anywhere else. If you’re interested in grass-fed beef (I know I am! ), farm fresh eggs (that too! ), local chicken feet dog treats (my favorite! ) and honey (hard pass), check out my other Ranch website at www. KbarMRanch. com. Tell ‘em Foxy sent ya!

BY KIM SMITH, WILLIE & ROO

We begin with a therapeutic regimen of recurring supplements and vitamins that are veterinarian selected and made with high quality, all-natural ingredients. All of these products are independently certified and approved. Though health supplements are a primary focus, we believe a truly sound pet is one that is well-rounded. That’s why we also include wholesome treats, mentally enriching toys, educational material and other unique (and fun!) items shipped directly to you each month. Our goal is to help you holistically care for your pet from puppy/kitten-hood, well into their golden years. Relax and enjoy some peace of mind while we make sure your pet receives the health products they need, when they need them. Two special animals in our lives, Willie the cat and Roo the dog, are the inspiration for this health box due to their unique needs. Willie lost an eye to an infection as a kitten and Roo was born with a severely deformed leg. They both benefit from supplement support and enrichment. Willie & Roo is San Antonio born and proud of our community. Our ongoing mission is to give back to local pets and their families who need a little help. To achieve that mission, we have partnered with San Antonio non-profit DaisyCares and will be committing a percentage of all proceeds to help support their wonderful cause. DaisyCares is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation created to provide pet food and medical care to pets of needy families. They also work to reduce

choosingarescuedog 5 Things to Consider When

A

nyone who’s ever fallen in love with a dog can tell you that it took just one look and they were a goner. Love at first sight with a dog is easy, but choosing a dog based on looks alone does not guarantee long-lasting love. Dogs are complex creatures and so much more than looks should be considered when choosing which dog to adopt. Using these five tips will help you not only find a dog you will fall in love with, but also help you find a dog you can live with for many years to come.

BY JODI ANDERSEN, CHIEF DOG EXPERT & CO-FOUNDER OF HOW I MET MY DOG

1. Breed of choice: Many people choose a dog based on a breed profile or a breed of dog they had as a kid. While breeds do share some genetic predispositions (e.g., herding dogs inherently chase things, hunting dogs often have high prey drive, working dogs can be highly focused), dogs are still individuals and should be chosen on individual merit. Even littermates can be very different from one another. Choosing a dog – regardless of the breed – based on how compatible your individual behavior and lifestyle needs are with an individual dog’s lifestyle and behavior needs, will exponentially increase the odds that you and that dog are a good long-term match. 2. Size matters - but only in terms of personality: While it goes without saying that a 95lb dog is a very different creature than a 10lb dog, the bigger personality does not necessarily belong to the bigger dog. Many small dogs have mighty big attitudes and many a gentle giant has been overlooked simply because of stature. If you think you would like to live with a very small dog (e.g., under 10lbs), consider at least the next size up (e.g., 10-20lbs) when searching for a dog. As long as you and the dog are the right lifestyle and behavior match, size becomes a much smaller issue. 3. Gender equality: Unless you already have a dog at home that only gets along with the opposite sex, choosing a dog based on whether it is male or female means you might miss out on the perfect partner. Instead, why not be open to the idea of choosing your canine soul mate based on their own, unique behavior profile, regardless of gender? Your open mind will most likely lead you right to his (or her) heart. 12

4. Aging gracefully: If you compare the aging process to that of humans, unfortunately dogs do age more quickly than we do. The good news, however, is that most dogs remain young at heart, mind, and body well into their senior years. And with so many wellness products on the market today, dogs are living longer than ever before. Given the majority of dogs act like youngsters until they are at least three years old, choosing to adopt an older dog does not mean you’ll miss out on one bit of that puppy love. 5. Training Style: Consider the training style that works for you – and the dog. If you’re more of a playmate than a parent or you’d rather multitask than focus on one thing at a time, your dogs needs to be a good match for this too. All dogs need healthy boundaries, but some need more than others. If you’re a low-talker and your dog is a “…you talking to me?” type, chances are the dog will be in charge. If, on the other hand you choose a dog that is noise sensitive or shy, your training style will be a perfect match. Now that your mind is open to what really matters when searching for your canine soul mate, your heart – and your eyes – can be free to follow. S

olar dermatitis occurs when white, light colored or damaged skin is exposed to direct or reflected sunlight. Solar dermatitis tends to affect areas which are not sufficiently covered by hair. In dogs, the areas most often affected are the nose and ears. Ears are most commonly affected in cats. When the nose is affected, skin lesions usually appear where haired skin and non-haired skin meet. Dogs can also be affected on their legs, chest, back and belly. For these pets, the ones with short hair coats are more likely to experience solar dermatitis than dogs with medium length or long hair coats. Many dogs are affected on their chest and belly because they like to lie on their backs and sunbathe. The sides of their chest, belly and legs may be affected if they like to lie on their sides while sunbathing.

WHITE-HAIRED AND NON-PIGMENTED SKIN OF SHORT-HAIRED BREEDS ARE MOST COMMONLY AFFECTED BY SOLAR DERMATITIS.

BY CAITLIN CONTREARY, DVM, DACVD

Excessive sun exposure can also lead to a condition called actinic keratosis. These lesions are pre-cancerous and can progress to skin cancer in some patients. If these lesions are caught early, they may go away with sun protection (sunscreen, etc.) and avoidance of sunlight. More advanced lesions may require medical treatment and/or surgical removal. In the most severe cases, sun damage can lead to the formation of skin cancer. Treatment of the skin cancer would depend on the type of cancer and how large of an area is affected. In some cases, surgical removal of the affected tissue may be an option. Sunlight is most intense during the summer months, from around 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Higher altitudes can also increase the intensity of sunlight. Dog and cat-specific sunscreen and children’s PABA free sunscreen should be used to protect your pet while he/ she is outside. Just as with humans, sunscreen works best when it is applied before your pet goes outside and then about every 4-6 hours while he/she is outside or may be exposed to sunlight. Wearing clothing or dog sun suits can also protect your pet.

14

Once sun damage starts, it may continue even if your pet is no longer exposed to much direct sunlight. It is important to pay attention to your pet’s skin and bring your pet to a veterinarian if you see any evidence of damage to the skin or any new skin lesions. Preventing sun damage is better and easier than treating sun damage, so it is a good idea to speak with your veterinarian about an appropriate sun protection plan for your pet. Dr. Caitlin Contreary is the board-certified dermatologist at MissionVet Specialty & Emergency. She attended school close to home at Louisiana State University and completed her residency at UC Davis. Texas then became home as she started her practice. Her special interests include allergic skin and ear disease and cutaneous manifestations of systemic diseases.

WITH DR. KIRBY OF ALAMO HEIGHTS PET CLINIC

A: I receive questions often concerning the use of cannaboids (CBD) in dogs, cats and other pets. I thought this would be a good time to discuss their use and actions in our pets bodies. Cannaibidoil (CBD) is one of 113 components or compounds in the cannabis plant termed cannabinoids. It is extracted from an industrial hemp plant in a medical facility. Many of these products are labeled full spectrum which is misleading since a full spectrum product may contain tetrahydrocanabinol (THC), a psychoactive compound. A quality CBD product that is safe and legal will have been passed

through a manufacturing process that removes the less beneficial molecules including THC. Dogs, birds, reptiles, fish and humans have an endocanabinoid system with receptors. CB 1 and CB 2. Even seasquirts have this system and they have evolved over 600 years ago! These products work for a body out of a balance. They activate serotonin, regulate pain, inflamation, regulate temperature and even decrease cancer cell production. Other conditions are helped by CBD products include: Allegies, Anxiety, Appetitie loss, Arthritis, joint mobility, Cancer, Skin issues, Glaucoma, Serizures, epilepsy, Fears (Thunderstorm and fireworks phobias) Your veterinarian is the person to talk to about these products and how they may work for your pet. They come as a treat, an oil, usually a coconut oil base, and powders in capsules. I am careful not to use an oil with a dog or other animal with history of pancreatitis. Remember to use an organic brand, no THC, and a trustworthy brand. We use VetsBotanicals in our clinic.

{askthevet}

Q: My older dog is experiencing a lot of pain from arthritis. A friend suggested CBD oil. What are your thoughts on this?

They All Said I was Crazy for Getting a Pet Door, but Now I Have No Worries! BY JOHN MOYA

W

hen I first started talking about getting a pet door, friends and family all said I was crazy. “Think of the animals you will be letting in! Think of the thieves that will have easy access to your home. You will not be able to sleep at night knowing that someone could crawl in and do very bad things to you or your family!” Between 3:30 AM and 5:00 AM, I could count on being licked in the face with the sound of whimpering in the background. Sebastian, my Golden, was telling me something…. he needed to go out! Being woken up from a good dream like this was not the way I wanted to spend the rest of Sebastian’s life. Sebastian was left inside in the nice comforts of my home while I was away at work. At that time, I worked at the airport and the daily commute was 35 minutes to my doorstep. This was before all the traffic lights and development on US 281. Upon arrival from work, he would run me over on his way to relieve himself. At times, I would find out that something did not agree with his stomach. An expensive call to Stanley Steamers usually occurred afterwards. 16

I received a phone call at work, “Sebastian ate the carpet—the whole carpet!” I can’t believe that I lived like this for years. I replaced door jambs from him scratching at the door wanting out. I replaced carpet due to his destruction. I have caught him in Kitty’s litter box (Yuck!). I have tried crating him only to give in to his whimpering. The loss of sleep was the last straw! Something had to be done! installed one of the best (if not the best) pet doors on the market that had dual security features and the maximum energy efficiency of any pet door on the market. Sleeping until I had to wake up for work was the biggest satisfaction that I got from it. Even Kitty got a pet door. Her litter box was moved to an empty closet and the poop eating contest was over for Sebastian. I never got an animal in the house that wasn’t supposed to be there. I didn’t have to rush home from work to see if there was a gift waiting for me to clean up. A would be thief would also have to think twice prior to entering. Judging from the pet door size, a German Shepard, Pit Bull, or a Rottweiler could be waiting. My friend’s and family’s concerns never occurred. If these events sound familiar, and you would like to stop the worries and stress over your pets, you may receive free information on the type of pet door that I installed. You may contact us directly at 210-464-8953 or by email at john@alamodogdoors.com. Some of your neighbors may alreadybe satisfied customers and I am sure that they would speak highly of their pet door and our installation services.

It’sThanksgiving! T

ime for family, fun and lots of food! It can also be dangerous time for your dog if he eats foods that are harmful to him. Here are 8 holiday staples that are actually dangerous for your dog to consume.

8. TURKEY SKIN Turkey is a given at almost every Thanksgiving feast and you probably wouldn’t think of this one as bad. But aside from being high in fat, it is also covered with butter, spices, marinades, and oils that were used to cook the turkey. These are very hard for your dog to digest. It’s best to resist the urge to let your dog eat the turkey scraps that get left behind after carving, even though they may have a dynamite begging face. 7. SAGE This popular holiday seasoning tastes delicious in stuffing and on the turkey, but it actually contains essential oils that are dangerous for your dog and can cause indigestion and an upset stomach. 6. NUTS Macadamia nuts and walnuts are especially dangerous for dogs to consume. They can cause a toxic reaction within 12 hours of ingesting them, which consists of vomiting, an inability to stand, and tremors. Symptoms usually go away, but it can sometimes lead to deadly shock.

BY MARLENE RING

5. COOKED BONES Many may think that giving your dog the bone from the turkey or ham is an excellent way to include them in the holiday meal, but cooked bones prove to be more dangerous than they are delicious. Cooked bones could splinter inside your dog’s digestive tract and cause major internal problems. Avoid leaving cooked bones anywhere near your dog’s reach, and quickly dispose of any leftovers after the meal to avoid a costly trip to the vet and an unpleasant experience for your dog. 4. NUTMEG Sweet potatoes and pumpkin, in appropriate doses, are a healthy treat for your dog. But you will want to take special precautions and make sure that neither of those have nutmeg on them before feeding. Nutmeg can cause seizures if your dog consumes it alone or as an ingredient in sweet potatoes or pumpkin, and in extreme cases can even lead to death. 24

3. ALCOHOL Most dogs love the taste of alcohol, but no type of alcohol is good for them. Even small amounts of alcohol, especially beer, can cause life threatening toxicity. The hops in beer can cause an elevated body temperature, racing heart, vomiting, and sometimes even death in dogs. Resist the urge to share your adult beverage with your dog, and you will avoid unnecessary suffering and illness.

2. BAKING ESSENTIALS: CHOCOLATE, DOUGH, AND BATTER Keeping your dog out of the kitchen while you prepare those delicious Thanksgiving desserts is a smart idea. Even small amounts of chocolate can harm them, and dough can actually rise inside of their bellies, which causes stomach pain for your precious pooch. Spare batter contains uncooked eggs, which are always a risk for Salmonella, something both you and your dog will want to avoid. 1. ONIONS AND GARLIC Another set of popular Thanksgiving ingredients, onions and garlic, are dangerous for your dog to get a hold of. All members of the onion family contain compounds that can damage your dog’s red blood cells and Garlic tends to be more toxic. Both can lead to anemia if ingesting in sufficient quantities and contrary to popular belief cooking them does not change that fact. Before you set the table for the big day, make sure to refer back to this list so your dog stays safe and happy during the holiday. Also, it is a good idea to let your holiday guests know of these potential threats as well – you don’t want Aunt Mae sneaking Fido something dangerous under the table during the big holiday meal! PET GALAXY'S NEW BUSES

If you live in Stone Oak, Encino or any of the adjacent communities, Pet Galaxy’s new coach bus pickup and delivery service may soon be coming to a bus stop near you, or for an additional fee, directly to your home. The new offering is a subscription service customized for each individual family and canine. The company will pick up your dogs every morning and drop off your happy and satisfied best friend every evening. During the day, the dogs will be provided plenty of play time for exercise with all their canine friends, access to playing various fun enrichment games such as “Use Your Nose to Find the Treat” and retriever games such as having a staff member throw a stick, tennis ball or frisbee. If desired, dogs may even participate in formal obedience training instructed by one of the company’s professional dog trainers. Even all-important nap-time is scheduled for each dog at strategic times during the day. Each bus can safely transport over 50 dogs (and cats), which means this is a limited offering on a first come, first serve basis, especially targeting families in the Stone Oak and Encino areas. Pet Galaxy is located about 20 minutes’ drive north of Stone Oak on Hwy 281, and has been offering daycare, lodging, grooming and training services for almost 10 years running. The facility occupies almost 6 acres in the city of Spring Branch, and is arguably best known for their huge outdoor doggie play yards, and as Lynn Haegeland, Director of Operations, adds “Please don’t forget our fantastic staff, and our service that we work so hard to ensure is second to none.” Most facilities located in and around the city of San Antonio offer either tiny indoor-only play areas, or in a few cases, a small outdoor play area. However, common for most of these, is that they are usually much too undersized for any real doggie play to materialize. If you have seen one of these facilities, you may have noticed how the dogs mostly stand around looking at each other, and the only break in the monotony is whenever a staff member decides to take a walk around the area. In the latter case, most of the dogs will simply follow the human to see if he or she has any fun ideas.

Pet Galaxy, in contrast, is located in the beautiful Hill Country north of San Antonio. The facility covers almost 6 acres, and provides large outdoor play yards featuring natural ground cover and plenty of oak trees with squirrels and other fun wildlife. The largest of the yards even includes a palm-tree encircled in-ground doggie swimming pool with a 7-foot water fall and a giant oyster with a pearl that spits water. Your furry friends can run, play, swim and just be a dog to their hearts’ desire. A visit would quickly convince you that these are the happiest dogs in San Antonio and beyond, bar none. But don’t simply take our word for it, take a look at some of the videos and many photos on the company’s Facebook page (http://facebook.com/PetGalaxyUSA). “Many of these canines’ families initially told us that their dogs did not like other dogs, or did not like to play at all.”, Lynn points out. “The reason was that they had previously taken their furry friends to some other facility with much smaller, or virtually non-existent, play yards. They could not believe their own eyes when we showed them video of their best friends running, swimming and playing uninhibited.”, Lynn affirms with a proud smile. As all informed dog owners know, it is absolutely essential for canines large and small to get plenty of exercise. Dogs have a vast surplus of energy, referred to by experts as “predatory energy”. This is the energy store originally utilized by the animal in pre-historic times, when dogs had to hunt for their own food just like other predators. The energy is still there, creating a very strong craving in the animal for running and serious exercise, in most cases much more than a human, even an Olympic runner, can offer. Dogs need other dogs both for socialization and friendship, and for serious play. Otherwise they take out their frustration in some other way; for example, your flowerbeds, your underwear, shoes or furniture. For more information and to subscribe to the service, call Pet Galaxy at 830-885-5335 or 210-526-9680, check out their website at http://PetGalaxyUSA.com or their Facebook page at http://facebook.com/PetGalaxyUSA.
