{ Editor’s letter } Dear readers, It is hard to believe that a year has come and gone and that we find ourselves saying goodbye to 2010 and preparing for a brand new year. For the DogsAreOk team, it has been a year filled with activities and many projects to complete. Though it hasn’t been an easy journey, we are very proud of what DogsAreOk has become. On behalf of the DogsAreOk team, I would like to dedicate this letter in gratitude to all of the people who have made this possible. We are thankful for the wonderful support offered by family and friends whose unique opinions and ideas have helped us to improve and reach new goals each day. We are equally thankful for all of the incredible people from the pet industry and rescue groups that have believed in DogsAreOk and that have supported us from month to month. DogsAreOk is a very special publication. In this issue, you will find eleven inspirational people and ten admirable dogs that gathered together for a group photo shoot on the same day. We would like to thank each of you for your participation and support as well. One of our responsibilities here at DogsAreOk is to work with the community in an effort to increase awareness and educate readers about the many remarkable organizations that strive to make the world a better place through the help of contributions made by caring people like you. Contributors Carol Caridad started her career in Animal Health after graduating from New York University. In 2007, Carol’s passion to save dogs from euthanasia at the local pound led to the foundation of Paws 4 You Rescue. Two years later, the SFVF awarded Carol “Volunteer Pet Hero” at the People Pets & Vets Awards Luncheon for her extraordinary work, constant attention and dedication to the animal community. Dr. Nancy Wilber has been practicing Veterinary Medicine since 1993. She enjoys all the rewards and challenges of general practice with a special focus on preventive care. She loves working with both dogs and cats at Brickell Animal Hospital.

Born in Valencia, Spain, Laura Díaz lived in Chicago for 16 years, where she received her second Masters Degree in Applied Linguistics and pursued a career in Foreign Language Education and modeling. Confused, anxious, and afraid, she, found herself in the car of a complete stranger. Heidi, a skittish mutt, who had spent much of her life at the animal shelter, Pet Rescue Miami, did not know that this stranger was to be her new owner, and was fearful of what was to come. Heidi’s new human stopped at WalMart for dogs supplies on their way home from Pet Rescue, leaving a friend outside with Heidi. Full of fear, and surrounded by strangers in the parking lot, Heidi began to struggle. She backed up and wriggled her head around until she popped out of her collar. Without a leash and collar to restrain her, Heidi made a break for it. When Pet Rescue Miami volunteers learned of the escape, they organized a group to go out to post lost dog fliers where Heidi went missing. After two days without any success, help was sought from an unlikely source, a Psychic in Northern Florida. Without having seen Heidi before, or having been given any physical description of her, the Psychic was able to know that Heidi was a brown, black, and gold brindle colored medium sized dog. The Psychic then said that Heidi was not north of the Wal-Mart where everyone had been look-

ing, but south instead. She said that Heidi was safe and someone was feeding her, but that Heidi was afraid and wouldn’t come near. After hearing this, the Pet Rescue Volunteers decided to try one more thing. On Sunday, they drove out to Florida City, and this time went south, putting up fliers in every gas station they passed. Tuesday morning, a call came in from the owner of one of the gas stations where lost dog fliers had been posted. “I think I see your dog,” he said. The gas station owner had been at work Monday night and had seen the lost dog fliers. The next morning when he was driving to work he saw two ears poking up from a depression of grass next to the turnpike.

Because Heidi was so fearful of people, Angelo, Heidi’s favorite volunteer at Pet Rescue Miami, was called to her rescue. Angelo responded immediately. When he reached the site he too saw the two ears poking up from the depression. He walked toward them, but as Heidi heard movement, she started to dart away. Angelo instantly began to sing their special song, “Heidi Ho”, which brought Heidi at full gallop toward him.. Angelo scooped her up and put her in his car. It was later found that there had been a woman who owned a nearby nursery, who had been feeding Heidi every night. The psychic’s predictions had been true, and without the help of this unusual source, Heidi may have been lost forever.

What the camera forgets to depict is the ten to fifteen years of responsibility that follows. While dogs can make a wonderful present, giving a dog to an unprepared or unsuspecting owner is also the reason many are surrendered to shelters and often euthanized. Gift givers should always evaluate if the gift recipient is truly prepared to become a pet parent, as owning a dog can be as challenging as it is rewarding. It is easy and fun to gift someone with a pet, but the novelty of receiving a new animal quickly wears off. Working with experienced animal rescue volunteers can help giftgivers make better decisions about which dog may be the best fit. Paws 4 You Rescue offers a Pet Promise Program. Through the program a Pet Promise Certificate is issued, promising the recipient the chance to adopt a pet from our rescue. Receiving an “IOU” allows the gift-recipient to take their time in selecting a new pet. Pet Promise Certificates also allow gift givers to “wrap” the necessary startup pet-care items into the cost of adopting a rescue.

One of the most popular and necessary commands during the holiday season is the “Leave It” command. This essential command can actually save your dog’s life.

It is important to remember that our wonderful dogs are living a life with us that would be completely abnormal to them in their natural habitat. Electrical wires, plastics, poisons and light bulbs are all things that our dogs would never encounter in the wild and since their curiosity can often get the best of them, they sometimes get into danger without even realizing it.

Here is how it’s done! First Step 1. Use a leash to control your dog’s movement.

2. Be sure to keep some of his favorite treats on hand.

3. Fill a plate with a delicious treat that your dog loves but does not usually get, such as a hot dog or chicken. 4. Give your dog just enough leash to get close and smell the food without touching it. 5. Once he starts pulling on the leash to grab it, say a firm “Leave it!” 6. If your dog turns away from the food for even a quick second to look at you, take his attention away from the food by saying “Yes!” with excitement. 7. Back up while saying “Yes!” and encourage your dog by petting him and giving him a treat.

8. Repeat this several times until your dog shows no interest. Second Step 1. To teach your dog the walking “Leave it” command, walk your dog past an object that he usually goes after. 2. When he leans toward the object, say a firm “Leave it!” 3. Once he backs up or shifts his attention toward you instead of the object, say “Yes!” and give him a treat (you should always walk with treats). 4. Keep walking past the object until your dog stops showing interest in it.

Third Step 1. The off-leash “leave it” command is similar to the on-leash one but you should only do this after your dog has mastered the on-leash and walking commands. 2. If your dog picks up something dangerous while you are far from him, say “Leave it!” in a firm tone and he will come running back to you and leave the object. Important: With this command and most others, practice makes perfect so be sure to practice every chance you get. Have a safe and happy holiday season!

We all have a tendency to overeat around the holidays. Don’t let your dog become a victim of the same thing! Obesity is one of the biggest health concerns facing our pets today. Overfeeding your pet is the equivalent to killing them with kindness. Studies conducted by numerous veterinary universities and pet food manufacturers show that obese dogs live shorter lives. They have much higher rates of respiratory disease, arthritis and diabetes. These conditions not only affect their longevity but also dramatically decrease their quality of life. Most people are aware that chocolate is toxic to dogs and through the holiday season accidental ingestion of sweets is much more likely to happen. Holiday candies and baked goods should be secured so that your dog can not reach them. Baking chocolate and dark chocolates pose the biggest risks but milk chocolate can also be a problem. Just 1.4 ounces of dark chocolate can be 10

toxic to a 10 lb dog. Dogs are very sensitive to both the theobromine and caffeine found in chocolate. Chocolate toxicity can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, rapid heart rate, and death in severe cases. Holiday tables are full of things that can be harmful to your pets. Cooked bones will easily splinter. They can chip your dogs’ teeth, create severe gastroenteritis or even become lodged in the stomach or intestine requiring surgery to remove them. High fatty meals can lead to lipemia, or fat in the blood stream. They can also trigger a bout of pancreatitis which is not only painful and unpleasant for your pet, but can be life threatening. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and depression. There can be many health risks for your dog in the kitchen. Onions and other members of the onion family like garlic, leeks and shallots can cause damage to red blood cells and lead to a life threatening

The holidays are stressful enough without having to worry about a potentially poisoned pet. Below is a list of holiday-related decorations, plants and food items that we recommend keeping away from pets. Holiday Ornaments

Therefore, it is important to not only keep your dog away from the holiday table, but to feed him/her correctly with a well rounded diet. Ask your veterinarian if you have any concerns about what your pet should be eating.

Alcohol: Most people know not to give alcoholic drinks to their pets; however, alcohol can be found in surprising places! Rum-soaked fruitcake or unbaked dough. Ingestion of alcohol can cause dangerous drops in blood sugar, blood pressure and body temperature. Intoxicated animals can experience seizures and respiratory failure.

cakes) can result in kidney failure in dogs. Chocolate and cocoa contain theobromine, a chemical highly toxic to dogs. Ingestion in large amounts can cause seizures and heart arrhythmias. Many sugarless gums and candies contain xylitol, a sweetener which is toxic to dogs. It causes a life-threatening drop in blood sugar and liver failure. Leftover, fatty meat scraps can produce severe inflammation of the pancreas leading to abdominal pain, vomiting and bloody diarrhea. The best thing a pet owner can do is getting educated on common household toxins and pet-proof your home accordingly. If you think your pet has been poisoned, contact your veterinarian right away. Article by Laura Díaz DogsAreOk sat down with Cesar Millan, best selling author and star of National Geographic Channel’s Dog Whisperer during his recent visit to Miami as part of Cesar’s new book tour “Cesar’s Rules: Your Way to Train a Well-Behaved Dog”. Note from the publisher: In his new book, Cesar takes on the topic of training for the first time, by explaining the importance of balance as the foundation for a healthy relationship between you and your dog. DRO: Pet dogs have earned the name “man’s best friend” for their extraordinary and demonstrated affect on many aspects of the human condition. According to several studies, canine companionship can directly promote our well being by offering physical, emotional, psychological, and social benefits, regardless of our age, gender, race, social status, ethnicity, or nationality. After more than 15,000 years of bonding with our dogs, we are now realizing that Fido can teach us one or two things about how to live happier, longer, and healthier lives. Cesar, what have your dogs taught you about life? CESAR: Dogs in general embrace the principals of life and integration of the relationship. They are very honest. They have integrity, which is the root of any relationship, and loyalty. What I love about the way they live is what they project to the people: hope. They (dogs) always hope that the human will get “it”. They never loose their hope. The other part that I love about dogs is their ability to forgive. I don’t think humans have learnt to forgive like dogs. Humans abandon dogs all the time; and they (dogs) forgive. Forgiveness doesn’t start at three; it starts at zero. That means, humans can tell you “I forgive you” but they start at three the next day, just in case you hurt them again. Dogs always starts at zero. So, hope and forgiveness are values that people don’t practice. One of the reasons why the show has been so successful is because it brings hope to people, and it helps them to forgive. I am following what dogs teach me. I am not trying to teach people anything as a human. I am teaching them what dogs teach me: hope, forgiveness, trust, respect, loyalty, honesty, integrity, and love. That’s pretty much what I do.

DRO: Are you a better person thanks to your dogs? CESAR: It is very important to me that I stay grounded, balanced, aligned, and humble. Or the dogs won’t follow me! Since I value their relationship so much, I don’t want to do anything outside that. It is all about the pack. If they keep me safe, I am going to keep them safe. If they give me what they have, I am going to give them what they don’t have yet, which is freedom. In a way, I am being their voice. Especially for the breeds that people are afraid of, like rottweilers, pitbulls, and German shepherds. Look, it is not that I am pro pitbull. I am pro dog. It is not the dog-it’s the human behind it. DRO: Thank you, Cesar, for your sincere words. CESAR: No, thank you for asking me about the principles. Everybody asks me “How do I make my dog come to me?” What they don’t realize is that they are not practicing the principles. Dogs are magnetized to the principles. They don’t care if you speak Spanish, or English, or Japanese. They can care less about that. As a kid, I grew up poor with dogs in the country. They were country dogs but they didn’t have psychological problems! Why would they follow someone who didn’t have any money and a poor education? I graduated from high school. That’s a far as I went. My clients are billionaires nowadays. Their dogs are still not listening to them! PERSONALITY

Contrary to what most people might think, Greyhounds are laid back dogs, are perfect companions and love to relax. They do have the independent spirit of a hound, so they are very playful at times and enjoy outdoor activities.

Greyhound

{ Let’s talk about } The Greyhound is the fastest dog breed; they run 45 miles an hour. Italian Greyhounds, not as fast as their ancestors, can still reach 25 miles an hour (6 miles faster than any other dog). Sadly, their average racing career is 3 years.

Coat

Both breeds have short, smooth coats that shed very little and are easy to maintain. Greyhounds come in many colors, ironically, gray is not that common. Italian Greyhounds can be any color, except brindle, classic black and tan and are highly sensitive to cold weather and need to be kept warm.

History

Greyhounds are one of the oldest pure breeds known to men. They were first recorded in Egypt 6000 years ago and the only dogs mentioned in the bible. In Europe, royalty bred them for hunting purposes, primarily in England. Italian Greyhounds were also royalty’s favorites, especially King Frederick’s the Great of Prussia who owned 50 and preferred their company over men’s. They were fist seen in Greece and Turkey, 2000 years ago, but they became more popular in Italy during the Renaissance, hence their name.

TRAINING

Because of their tendency to run and their strong pray drive, both breeds should always be kept on a leash or in a fenced area. They are easy to train but it is recommended that socialization and training start early. Greyhounds require daily exercise and enjoy the company of their owner.

Mostly known for their speed, Greyhounds were designed to run, though they also turned out to be great companion dogs. They are in the family of gazehounds: dogs that hunt by sight.

BODY

Both breeds are lean, slender and keen. Greyhounds are tall and Italian Greyhounds are over a foot tall but independently from their height, they both have deep chests that give them great endurance.

TAIL

Tail is long and slender and ends in a slight curve. They use it as a rudder to keep their balance and to turn while running.

DOG GRINCH CHAPTER 1 CUPID AND ARCHER, UNLEASHED!

Their eyes connected… Jim didn’t know her name, and had never talked to her but he could tell she was a good person by the look in her beautiful blue eyes. He would see her walk her dog every morning, an Old English Shepherd that was very respectful, always keeping his distance from people on the sidewalk in spite of the fact she always walked him unleashed… That day, Jim had finally decided to talk to her, and got on one knee and motioned to the dog as a way to reel her in, the dog acquiesced and was the total gentle giant, super friendly he let himself be petted with tremendous patience, almost as an accomplice just sitting there and forcing his owner to come over and pick him up… Jim rose up to greet her and their eyes locked, in a moment that was about to become uncomfortable but luckily, Jim had the courage to speak and just said “Hi, my name is Jim”. Her face lit up as she smiled, which was a very good sign, and shot back “My name is Megan”. “I have been seeing you every morning for the past five months, exactly at the same time” he added, “so without even knowing you, I can tell you must be very disciplined”.

This is a story about boy meets girl approximately thirty seconds before boy meets dog and let me prepare you already, in a funny but sort of tragic twist of events, it does NOT have a happy ending. The story could have had a glorious finale, and I could have been named the Dog Angel… but alas, the story ended in shattered dreams, and high drama, and thus I am to remain the Dog Grinch! I will continue to have this peculiar christening as long as Dog Owners out there don’t do what they are supposed to do: respect others as much as they respect their dogs… Please, I beg you, unless you want to be the next victim of my column, please don’t make me hate your dog… I love dogs, and thus dog-owners that set up their dogs for failure are a whole different breed in need of refinement… Since this is the debut column, I have to thank first and foremost my aunt’s French Poodle Toy who left me a black eye when I was like three years old and scarred my psyche into a perfect tuning fork that can detect dreadful dog owners a mile away, so here goes the story of my newest case: Cupid and Archer – Unleashed! the surprise of the dozen or so PhD’s in full Level 4 microbiological containment gear ala movie “Outbreak”, he started herding all the sheep, and contaminating all of the samples with the efficiency and speed of the most malicious parasite. Megan, don’t make me hate Archer. He is a wonderful dog. Is it too hard to ask you to walk him with a leash? Yes, I know he is gentle and playful, and could not hurt a fly, but he just killed hundreds of thousands of micro cultures of Nematophagous fungi and had a major impact on global crop yields not to mention the impact on your love life. You and Jim would have been so happy together and would have done so much good for the world that we could have made a movie about you. All that is gone now. Megan, get with the protocol and please, don’t make me hate your dog… DG

She smiled again, but this time, with a look piqued by curiosity: “I guess I could say the same thing about you, everyday, when Archer and I set out on our morning walk, I see you standing outside this greenhouse almost like guarding the entrance and by the time we make our way back, you are gone…” and she added with a big grin on her face “Actually, now that I think about it, you sound more mysterious than disciplined.” Megan didn’t know Jim was single, just like her. That he was an idealist, just like her; and that he had a heart of gold, just like her. She was a very successful architect and Jim was an uncommonly smart PhD botanist doing groundbreaking research on crop resistance thanks to a strand of fungi found in sheep dung. Jim had received a number of grants to set up this small biofarm in the outskirts of suburbia so he could isolate the fungi and figure out a way to mass produce it… He was about to have a major impact on the world and make millions, and maybe that is why that chilly morning he overcame his natural geeky shyness and finally got the nerve to talk to her… You could tell they were hitting it off, but unfortunately, in less than thirty seconds, the dream was gone, the research destroyed, years of effort down the drain. Jim and Megan never got a chance to date, to take long walks and discover all they had in common; they never kissed, and never saw the sunset and never spent Christmas together. Archer, Megan’s wonderful companion, the gentle Old English Shepherd, who had received his name because he was also a Sagittarius like Megan, had his eyes locked on a very different target that his scent picked up. While the adults were getting struck by cupid’s arrows, he had made his way to the restricted biocompound where the sheep were grazing and were all the sheep dung fungi was being cultivated. As a fitting homage to his long and distinguished lineage, and to 28
