That is when a word of warning is in order. Our pet’s hair has properties that are closer to wool than hair and it absorbs color like nothing else. So if you want your darling little one to be a pink princess for the night of the ghouls, be prepared to live with her in diminishing tones of pink till December. Every year we get the post-Halloween phone calls with distressed owners asking for help, but Halloween only comes around once a year and if you really want your poodle to look like a bumblebee then I have some tips for you:

At this time of the year many of us pet lovers want to include our pets in our enjoyment of Halloween. Some dogs, strange as it may sound, do enjoy walking around all dressed up and some of us even want to add some color to their coat for an extra womp!!!

One of the greatest things that service dogs provide for their disabled, human companions is an opportunity to live a relatively normal life in spite of the mobility problems that they face. There is something truly remarkable

about the relationships that develop between disabled people and the canine caretakers that enhance their lives. Founded by Janet Severt, a quadriplegic who uses a service dog herself, New Horizons Service Dogs (NHSD) is a non-profit organization that recognizes the value of these extraordinary relationships and helps to facilitate them by partnering trained dogs with disabled handlers in need. NHSD is a Florida based organization that trains Golden and Labrador Retrievers to perform tasks that will make their handlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life easier. Some of these tasks include things like opening doors, retrieving objects, turning off light switches and pulling a wheelchair. Once the dogs have successfully completed NHSDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s training program, they are given to disabled individuals throughout the state at no cost. Depending on factors related to their temperament and abilities, service dogs are trained to 8

The inmates work with the puppies on everything from basic housetraining to teaching them more complex behaviors like how to navigate around a wheelchair. work either in private homes or in places like adult living facilities and nursing homes. The training for future service dogs, which generally takes about 18 months, is provided by volunteers known as weekend puppy raisers and also by prison inmates who participate in a special program that was developed in collaboration with the Florida Department of Corrections. Qualified NHSD instructors provide both the volunteers and the inmates with instruction on how to properly train the puppies. The inmates work with the puppies on everything from basic housetraining to teaching them more complex behaviors like how to navigate around a wheelchair. Weekend puppy raisers, on the other hand, focus on socializing the puppies by introducing them to public places like grocery stores, shopping malls, doctorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offices and other places to which the dogs will eventually accompany their disabled handlers.

NHSD is always looking for more weekend puppy raisers and other volunteers that can help by transporting puppies to vet visits and other necessary trips. Debbie and Sago, a breathtaking Canine Success Story Ten years ago I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. A couple of years later I applied for a Mobility

Assistance dog at New Horizons. I was amazed when they told me that there was a 3-year waiting list for a dog. Finally, one day, I got a call; they had a dog for me! I was so excited I couldn’t sleep. The next step was to go to New Horizons for training. When I arrived I was shown three dogs, but I knew immediately that the very strong male dog named Sago was the best fit for me. The training was very tough, sort of like dog boot camp. There are about 60 commands that you, as the dogs’ partner, must learn. After successfully completing training, I was sent home with Sago. Sago has changed my entire life; before, I was in my scooter chair almost 85% of the time, now I can go for short walks with him. He retrieves things for me and holds my heavy bags. If I find myself on the floor and no one is around, I call for Sago, he braces like a statue and I can use his body to propel me off the floor. These were all things that I needed my husband or my son to do, but not any more, I am INDEPENDENT again! Sago and I are partners in every way; he is my very personal friend, who loves me unconditionally as I do him. The world is a tough place for a disabled person and a service dog. People still don’t understand what these dogs do, they always think that I am blind because of course, guide dogs are really the only dogs that people know. Many times we go to places and people shout for us to leave, then I have to tell them that he is my service dog, even though he is always wearing his harness that says so. I then stand my ground in hopes that Sago and I forge new ground for future service dog teams. New Horizons is an amazing organization and I hope they can continue to bring independence back to many more people in the future.

How to Identify, manage, and prevent aggression As dog owners it’s important to realize that not every dog with a bite history is aggressive.

Aggression is an expression of how a dog is feeling. Growls, lunges and dog bites occur because the right circumstances were present to trigger an aggressive response. Most dogs provide warning signals for a long time prior to a bite. Some common warning signals in dogs are avoidance of eye contact, stiff muscles or growling directed at other animals including humans. Most severe behavior problems surface between 1-2 years of age due to chemical changes in the brain. This is why a dog that seemingly has been fine “snaps” to the untrained eye. Additionally, if aggressive displays are punished in an attempt to correct behavior, a dog’s level of aggressiveness can increase. In 2008, the American Society of Veterinary Behaviorists released a position statement which discussed

Because we don’t always know the history of an adult dog, always: k Teach children to leave an unfamiliar dog alone k Call your dogs’ name if you risk waking him from sleep k Demand new house guests to stand still until your dogs greet them politely first k Trade when you take away a valued toy or bone k Hand feed from time-totime k Encourage “drop” during a tug-o-war game

If you need help with your dog, find qualified professionals who use positive reinforcement methods to modify behavior like: the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (www.apdt. com), the International Association of Canine Professionals (www. canineprofessionals.com) and the Certified Applied Animal Behaviorists (www.animalbehavior.org). With positive training, dogs learn to make choices that are rewarded with food, affection, play or anything else the dog enjoys. Over time, your dog can change his emotional response from “that is really scary I should aggress” to “that is wonderful I feel great!”

The “Come” command is without question one of the most important cues you should teach your dog. Not only can the “Come” command be vital in keeping your dog from running away from you and getting lost or worse yet running off into danger and possibly getting seriously hurt, but a good “come” command also can give a dog a better life. Here’s how to do it.

1. You want to use a treat that the dog LOVES.

2. If you have someone else to work

with you in the beginning it is even better. Each person takes treats and spreads out across a room in the house. Then the person that the dog is not trailing or paying attention to calls the dog by saying the dog’s name first and then come (Max Come!) in a very playful excited tone.

3. You want the dog to be very ex-

cited about this command for life, so do not yell this command at the dog as if it’s a demand, this is usually a crucial mistake and kills drive.

4. As soon as you say the “YES!” word and the dog has actually taken one step toward you, you should move backward a few steps and say “good!” to keep him coming. This will usually build more speed as well. 5. And as soon as you say the

9. If your dog loves toys then once he understands the concept you can switch over to a toy reward instead of food or do both. NOTE: Every dog has a unique way to respond to training. So if you feel you are doing everything right and your dog is not responding, seek professional help.

Pet overpopulation is the most obvious reason to sterilize your pet. In Miami Dade County alone last year over 32,000 animals were surrendered to the Animal Services Department. This does not include those given up to the Humane Society or the numerous rescue groups that tirelessly work in our community. One un-spayed female dog, her mate and all of their puppies, if none are ever spayed or neutered, can add up to over 67,000 puppies in only 6 years. Having your male dog neutered will in most circumstances make him a better household pet and family member. There are numerous behavioral benefits. Hormonal influences lead a male dog to feel the need to “mark” his territory. It is natural for him to want to lift his leg and leave a little urine on objects to stake his claim. This is not much of a problem outside, but sometimes this persists indoor as well. Intact male dogs have a tendency towards being more territorial and aggressive. They do tend to wander more often. A female in heat will attract them from miles away. Medically, the surgery will prevent testicular cancers and decrease prostatic diseases and perianal tumor development. In the female dog, the medical benefits are very pronounced. Numerous studies show that having your pet spayed before her first heat cycle will decrease her chance of 12

have her spayed. Female dogs can develop a life threatening uterine infection called pyometra as they age. A pyometra can transform a routine surgery into a serious surgical emergency. Symptoms include lack of appetite, diarrhea, lethargy and dehydration. Pyometra is also likely to develop in dogs that have received injections to stop them from having a “heat” cycle and to prevent pregnancy. Intact female dogs can experience false pregnancy which can lead to nesting, milk development and behavioral changes that can be distressing to both you and your pet.

You might have heard that the surgery will make your pet fat. There is nothing inherent in the surgery that causes weight gain. Your pet’s basal metabolic rate will change after the surgery so it can be necessary to decrease their caloric intake. The surgery is recommended at 6 months of age in most circumstances. Many puppies are experiencing a dramatic decline in their growth rate and need to be fed fewer calories at this age regardless of whether or not they are spayed or neutered. As with any surgery, it is important to discuss the details of the procedure and the necessary pre anesthetic requirement with your veterinarian.

Agility is an exciting dog sport that challenges both dog and handler to go through an obstacle course similar to that of an equine jumping course. Encouraging competition, the sport is open to all dogs, purebreds as well as mixed breeds, and helps to develop a strong bond between handler and dog. Participating in agility is a good way to have fun with your pet while enjoying the unique relationship that exists between you and your four-legged friend. If you ask me: what kind of activity should I practice with my dog? I will encourage you to try Agility. It is the most exciting sport you can practice with your four-legged friend. One of the great things about agility is that it gives dogs and their owners the opportunity to compete at the level that best suits them, which is determined by the dog’s size and level of training. With such a wide variety of classes to compete in, you and your dog are sure to have an enjoyable time. Imagine how much fun it is to go and have your best friend go over jumps, run through tunnels, climb A-frames and dominate teeter totters and weave poles. Most importantly, agility training is done through positive reinforcement so dogs like going to training and competitions. Many agility competitors begin practicing the sport just for fun and to enjoy an afternoon with their pet. However, as time goes by and they become more involved in the techniques, speed and challenges that the sport brings, they eventually get bitten by the agility bug. Today, there are

The sport has become a favorite activity for many different kennel clubs and for the National Canine Federations from various countries. The most prestigious agility competition is the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) Agility World Championships in which teams of different nations participate. This year’s event will be held in Rieden, Germany on October 1-3.

DRO: At what point of your life and why did rescuing dogs become your personal and professional mission? A: In my naive years I could not comprehend that animals needed to be rescued from unwanted circumstances. When I was in college in NYC, I adopted and saved a lovely eight week old shepherd mix named Misha from starving to death on a Brooklyn construction site. I was deeply moved from this day forward.

A couple trying to adopt a very young puppy for their three year old child would not be a good match. Our Seniors 4 Seniors Program helps many human seniors battle life changes and loneliness by matching them with an older canine. For these older people, our volunteers can assist with the canines’ medical needs, transports and food as needed. We will decline adoptions if we strongly feel in our hearts that the environment is not the best for the pet. So, yes, we pride ourselves as being Match Makers and I hope that we are all blessed from heaven with good thoughts!

DRO: Has your house become a pooch hotel, or do you have boundaries on how many dogs you can bring home? Has your husband said, “It is me or the dogs!” yet? A: Let’s just say it is a pooch hotel with boundaries and a limit. Like many of my volunteers, I provide a temporary foster home for those that need a little extra help, like the seniors or ones recovering from surgical procedures. Fortunately, my husband loves animals and is very supportive and helpful.

Lindsay Hayward, a.k.a, Isis The Amazon, was 6 foot at age 9, and 6’9” by the age of 13. Growing up in California, she excelled at playing sports, including basketball, which earned her a University of Virginia scholarship to play for the Virginia Cavaliers.

But it wasn’t until she moved to Miami, FL to pursue a career in wrestling, modeling, and her true passion, action film acting, that her exceptional height started to pay off. When she is not fighting in the ring, or posing in front of the camera, Lindsay likes to cuddle at home with her three rescued Boston Terriers and fostered Bulldog mix. “ I rescued an English Bulldog mix, 4 month old puppy from the streets of Miami.... It is such a blessing to have the ability to save an innocent life.” It is not only Lindsay’s “unusual” height that gets her noticed all the time. Today, many

Chihuahua

HISTORY

Some scientists believe that this breed originated from the Fennec Fox. They are one of the oldest breeds in America. Their name comes from the State of Chihuahua in Mexico, where the earliest specimens of the breed were found. They were pets to royalty and the upper classes of the Aztecs.

Chihuahuas have radar-dish ears that help them get rid of excessive body heat and identify predators and prey.

EYES

Chihuahuas are well known for their large black eyes that sometimes seem to pop out.

HEAD

It can be apple or deer shaped. They have a molera, but unlike babies, Chihuahuas’ soft spot on the crown of the head, stays for life. This breed has the largest brain than any dog, relative to its size.

BREED

Smallest breed in the world and probably the most popular “purse dog”. Weighting no more than six pounds, this lap dog has a great heart and is one of the cutest companions. They can be an easy pray for larger dogs and wild animals, so keep them close!

PERSONALITY

Due to their small size, Chihuahuas need to be hyperaware of their surroundings. That is why they are clever and alert dogs and should not be underestimated. This cute creature loves to be pampered and carried around. As a one person dog, they can be very protective of their owner. They are sweet, portable, graceful dogs with a huge personality.

The Big Apple is an exciting place to visit, and what better way than sharing the experience with your furry loved ones?

In such a hectic city, you would think there are not that many dogs. After all, when would people find time to take care of them? Where would dogs find space to hang out and play among all the buildings and bustle? Wouldn’t New Yorkers just hate dogs being in their way? As it turns out, Manhattan is surprisingly dog friendly. The city has many parks and recreational areas, and even the surliest New Yorker can’t resist the lure of a bulldog. Planes, Trains and Automobiles But first things first: when to go and how to get there? If you are bringing your dog, it is best to come between April and June or mid September through November. Summer is too hot for most dogs (and their owners) and winter is too cold.

Next up: road trip or plane? If you choose to drive, there are plenty of rest areas along the highway where your pet can stretch its legs and have some food and water. A place 20

“I’ve always loved animals, as far back as I can remember. When I was a kid I dreamed of one day opening a ‘pet shop’. One of my first artistic endeavors fresh out of design school was to create a series of images of Canada to put on T-shirts. I drew the strongest archetypes but the one that people seemed to connect with the most was the Husky image. (Tetro´s first pet was a Husky named Nikki.) A few years later I moved from Canada to Miami and it was then that I was asked to do a painting to hang on the set of the TV show Friends. The media attention I received propelled me to pursue drawing more dogs. I joined the HSGM as a contributor in 2002, when they asked me to draw the image that would go on the cover of their magazine and would be used as the Christmas card that year. I continue to have a wonderful relationship with them and have created the poster for their annual Walk for the Animals at Bayfront Park ever since. I encourage you to participate in this kind of events and art auctions to help the groups financially.
