BOARD OF GOVERNORS REPORT 2022-2023

INTRODUCTION FROM OUR CHAIR OF THE BOARD On behalf of my fellow Governors, it is my pleasure to introduce the Doha College 2022-23 Annual Report. With the pandemic firmly behind us, this has been a year of getting back to the wonders of seeing all pupils learning, thriving, and having fun. This past year has been a testament to the remarkable dynamism of Doha College and our community, where we faced our share of challenges, but through it all, witnessed countless moments of inspiration, innovation, and growth. One of the highlights was the hosting of the World Cup, which gave us not only a longer winter break, but also a unique opportunity to celebrate our diversity. Reflecting on milestones from this year, our pupils continue to impress with their intellectual curiosity and passion for learning. The exam results for this year – for both Primary and Secondary – demonstrate the commitment of both the teachers and parents to nurturing well-rounded, critically thinking individuals prepared for the complexities of the world. Doha College placed second among all the major British International Schools in the Middle East for iGCSE and A-level results, a feat we should all be immensely proud of. Our community also faced a heartbreaking loss with the passing of Rayaan Habib. In the face of this tragedy, our community rallied together in a remarkable display of strength and compassion. Pupils, families, faculty, and staff came together to support each other through grief and healing. This academic year has also seen the re-building of our parent community. It’s great to see the FDC once again fostering new connections and making Doha College feel like “home” for many of us. Their dedication goes beyond the walls of the College, enriching the lives of our community. I would encourage all parents and staff to join us in future events. From a financial perspective, this has been a particularly challenging year due to the interest rate increases. As you may be aware, Doha College entered into a lending agreement to build our fantastic new campus, and the higher interest rates have created additional interest expenses. Though not being in immediate danger due to the College being cashflow positive, this challenge will require close monitoring of the financials over the coming years. This is particularly relevant as we are a not-for-profit institution, and every Riyal gets re-invested into the learning and well-being of our pupils. This year was marked as a leadership transition year. We welcomed Mr. Martin George as an Interim Principal for a period of one year while we recruited a fulltime Principal. Particularly, Mr. George demonstrated immense leadership and professionalism for joining the College a mere few weeks after a personal tragedy. On behalf of the whole Doha College community, I would like to thank Mr. George for the positive imprint that he has had on the College, leaving behind a solid foundation to continue the journey of learning and fun for many years to come.

The strategic priorities of Doha College continue to be focused on academics, well-being, and strengthening the community that enables our children to thrive. As such, we actively worked on four key priorities. The first was to ensure the long-term sustainability of the school. This includes maintaining the highest quality of education, strong safeguarding practices and a stable financial footing. The second priority was to re-build the fantastic and vibrant Doha College community. Ultimately, we want every student, staff member and parent to be immensely proud to be part of Doha College. The third priority was to get back to the rhythm of continuous operations. Finally, the fourth priority was quite simply to have fun. Enjoyment and happiness create a much more effective learning experience and are the fundamental glue in building a strong community and creating a positive working environment (With the onboarding of a new Principal, the Board of Governors will be reviewing and creating a new three-year Strategic Plan. The overarching aim of any school’s governing board is to ensure the well-being of its students and enable them to succeed to the very best of their ability. To achieve this, Doha College’s Board of Governors sets the strategy, holds the leadership accountable for delivering the strategy, oversees the educational, financial and operational performance, and ensures that stakeholders’ voices are heard. We are composed of highly passionate individuals who graciously volunteer our time and expertise to ensure that Doha College continues to be one of the region’s best and most sought-after schools. As a Board of Governors, we are keen to ensure that transparency, strong communication and good governance are firmly embedded into the ethos of Doha College. Of course, our success today – and tomorrow – lies with our people. At every level, I want to thank all of the Doha College staff for their relentless commitment and passion they deliver every day. The seeds planted today will ultimately grow to tomorrow’s oak trees. As we look ahead, we will embark on an exciting new chapter, with a new Principal and the unwavering faith in the potential of our students, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the support of our community. Together, we will navigate the challenges, celebrate the triumphs, and shape a future filled with promise.

EDUARDO VIEIRA Chair of the Board

For pupils, not for profit! VISION To enable personal growth, instil a passion for learning and create aspirational minds.

MISSION With the growth-mindset philosophy of High Performance Learning, we develop confidence, creativity and intellectual curiosity in a safe, caring and inclusive environment for our students to make a lasting contribution to global society.

We all want a high performing education system, but many people assume that only a minority of advantaged children will be given the opportunity to reach high levels of educational performance. High Performance Learning (HPL) enables students not only to achieve academic excellence but to develop a way of thinking and learning that develops mental agility, reasoning skills and an appreciation of the benefits of working hard. Rather than focusing on early signs of under achievement that, in other schools, might have resulted in a student receiving less demanding work with lower expectations, HPL helps each individual to develop a multitude of cognitive and emotional attributes that give them the skills and resources to break through learning barriers.

A FEW WORDS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

The last twelve months have been hugely important ones for British International Schools around the world and Doha College has been at the centre of many of the positive changes and exciting developments that will see education continuing to evolve in the coming months and years. Like many schools, Doha College was finally able to say goodbye to the pandemic related restrictions that had dominated schools’ operations since the first COVID-19 cases outside China emerged during the early months of 2020. As a result of these restrictions being lifted, assessment standards and expectations returned to pre-pandemic levels which saw most schools struggling to replicate the examination results they had delivered during the pandemic years. Unlike most schools, however, Doha College’s Class of 2023 was able to buck this trend and match the exceptional performance of the Class of 2022 in delivering the College’s best ever set of A Level results. The last academic year has also seen the emergence of new AI tools which have seeped into the public consciousness following the launch of Chat-GPT in November 2022. The proliferation of AI tools since this date has been relentless and this will present both a once-in-a-generation opportunity and great challenges for schools and the young people they serve. The work that the teachers at Doha College have been doing in this space is both inspiring and exciting, and our future plans in this regard will continue to position the College at the very forefront of international education.

THE BOARD COMMITTEES EXPLAINED Governance Committee The role of the Governance Committee is to put measures in place to ensure the Board of Governors (BoG) acts in a transparent and responsible way. The overarching document that aims to support this is the Constitution and Instruments of Governance, which details how and when Governors are recruited as well as the mechanics of how decisions are made. The Governance Committee reviews other Board Sub-Committees’ (BSC) performance against KPIs, periodically reviews BoG-level (and certain operational) policies and procedures, and ensures meetings and decisions are recorded appropriately. The committee also oversees the auditing of departments within Doha College by appointing external services to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement. Continuous improvement is further achieved by keeping current with best practices by supporting the Clerk in maintaining our relationships with institutions such as AGBIS and NGA. We also undergo BoG-level self-assessment to identify any gaps in our capability and competencies.

Resources Committee The role of the Committee is to assist the Board of Governors in ensuring that Doha College provides a worldclass, internationally recognised education in a safe learning space by focusing on the financial aspects of running a school and ensuring that resources are utilised effectively. The Resources Committee provides advice to the Finance Team in relation to financial regulatory compliance and ensures that an external financial audit is conducted at least once per year, the results of which are shared with the Board of Governors. The committee also ensures that policies and procedures are in place and complied with to ensure the protection of and efficient, accurate use of all financial, physical, and human resources and assets. The committee reviews and monitors the annual budget and business plans, ensures that the college has access to sufficient funds, reviews the academic fees and other charges, and provides financial advice when required. In addition, the Committee oversees the operations of the College’s Appraisal process and reviews the procedures for staff discipline. The Resources Committee submits a written report to the Board of Governors ahead of each Board meeting, summarising the actions taken and decisions made, the key college functions which have been reviewed in the preceding period, with observations noted, recommendations raised and actions resulting from them. Finally, the Committee can be delegated authority by the Full Board wherever it is deemed necessary.

Board of Governors Report 2022-2023

Education Standards Committee The Educations Standards Committee supports the College by focusing on areas directly impacting the quality of education provision. Specifically, the committee oversees the academic standards in both primary and secondary by benchmarking achievement levels, admissions, curriculum structure and attendance. The committee also oversees the college’s digital learning strategy and trips, visits and co-curricular activities. The committee ensures the college adheres to a comprehensive SEND policy, provides strong pastoral care, and that the college provides professional development opportunities for staff members. Finally, the Educations Standards Committee reviews Doha College’s overall educational philosophy including the college’s definition of learning and learning objectives.

Safeguarding and Community Committee The role of the Safeguarding and Community Committee is to support the College’s endeavours directly related to and impacting the welfare of students and staff, as well as their relationships with the wider community. One of its primary objectives is to review and monitor the safeguarding policy within the College to ensure the protection of all students. The Committee also reviews and monitors the wellbeing of students, as well as staff, with respect to the provision of counselling services and periodic wellbeing surveys. It also maintains oversight of the college’s facilities where there is a potential impact on student and staff welfare. In addition, the Safeguarding and Community Committee supports the College in building, fostering and maintaining links with the wider local community, with the objective of raising funds, supporting charitable causes and nurturing meaningful relationships that support its primary objective to support student and staff wellbeing. Lastly, the Safeguarding and Community Committee monitors the College’s public profile through a periodic review of marketing and communication activities.

WELCOME FROM SECONDARY The academic year of 2022-23 at Doha College was a whirlwind of emotions and accomplishments. As the Head of Secondary, I was struck by the exceptional camaraderie among both students and staff, something not commonly found in large and intricate organizations. Witnessing the brilliance of our staff firsthand was humbling—they are genuine experts in their roles, consistently going above and beyond for our students. Academic achievements soared, thanks to a stellar curriculum and outstanding teaching that led to remarkable examination results. Equally impressive was the level of pastoral care provided to our students. We celebrated numerous events like COBIS music events, DCMUN, House Festivals, and the heartwarming Year 13 graduation ceremonies. The preparation for the FIFA World Cup added a unique dimension, allowing our students to partake as mascots and ball boys and girls—a testament to the opportunities we provide. These achievements filled me with immense pride as the Headteacher, reinforcing my honour to be part of such a remarkable community. However, amidst our successes, the loss of Rayaan, a beautiful student, was a devastating blow. My heartfelt condolences and ongoing support go out to Rayaan’s family, and the strength displayed by our community during this time was truly remarkable. I am profoundly grateful for the resilience and unity that this community has shown.

Secondary Highlights DC MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE Our students showcased their skill in diplomacy and global affairs at the DC Model United Nations conference. Representing various nations, they engaged in intense debates, negotiations, and collaborative problem-solving, demonstrating exceptional intellectual acumen. This experience not only broadened their understanding of international issues but also honed crucial skills in public speaking, research, and teamwork, preparing them for future leadership roles on the world stage.

DRAGON’S DEN In a dynamic and entrepreneurial showcase, our Year 9 students stepped into the realm of business with their Dragons’ Den presentations. Armed with innovative ideas and a passion for creativity, these budding entrepreneurs pitched their concepts to a panel of discerning judges – we were not too scary! The event not only encouraged students to think critically and creatively but also instilled a sense of confidence as they navigated the challenging terrain of business pitches, setting the stage for future innovation and enterprise.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS The school was alive with the sound of music during the highly anticipated Battle of the Bands competition. Showcasing the diverse talents of our student musicians, this event brought together a range of genres and styles, creating a vibrant celebration of artistic expression. The competition not only highlighted the incredible musical talent within our student body but also provided a platform for fostering a supportive and appreciative community for the arts.

YEAR 13 GRADUATION CEREMONY As the school year drew to a close, we bid a heartfelt farewell to our graduating Year 13 students in a memorable Graduation Ceremony. Amidst a backdrop of nostalgia and pride (the baby pictures were so very cute), students, parents, and staff gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating class of 2023. The event was a poignant reminder of the transformative journey these students undertook during their time at our school and marked the beginning of their exciting new chapters. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the auditorium. These achievements filled me with immense pride as the Headteacher, reinforcing my honour in being a part of such a remarkable community.

Board of Governors Report 2022-2023

WELL-BEING Doha college believes that well-being sits at the heart of everything it does with students. Each child is unique, and although there is no set level of what well-being should be, each child should be helped to reach their full potential.

SAFE HEALTHY

INCLUDED

As a school, we aim to help every child learn how to cope with the trials and experiences they will face as they move through the school to become young adults and confident members of the community. Students will have different experiences and needs at different RESPONSIBLE times in their lives, and it is essential they get the right support at each stage when they need it. Life can be stressful, and learning to cope with those stresses is key to a student’s well-being. Some students will do this naturally, while others will need more help, support and strategies to do this.

Well-being Wheel

RESPECTED

ACHIEVING

NURTURED

As a guide to what well-being should be, Doha college follows the eight well-being indicators, which are commonly referred to by their initial letters - SHANARRI. (safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible and included).

ACTIVE

These indicators shown below in our well-being wheel help all staff to appreciate a shared understanding of what can be used to ensure a child’s well-being is influenced holistically through each area. o

Is child-focused - it ensures the child or young person – and their family – is at the centre of decision-making and the support available.

o

Is based on an understanding of the well-being of a child in their current situation - it takes into consideration the wider influences on a child or young person and their developmental needs when thinking about their well-being, so that the right support can be offered.

o

Is based on tackling needs early - it aims to ensure needs are identified as early as possible to avoid bigger concerns or problems developing.

o

requires joined-up working - it is about children, young people, parents, and the services they need working together in a coordinated way to meet their specific needs and improve their well-being.

Every student at Doha College is a member of a House. The House system forms an integral part of the DC community, encouraging healthy competition in academic, sporting, and cultural spheres, enabling students to collaborate and make friends across all year groups. The House system is aimed at developing student participation and celebrating success in several House activities, both curricular and co-curricular; competitions are hugely enjoyed throughout the year. The House system presents the opportunity to reward work within and beyond the classroom setting while developing values of co-operation and teamwork among the students and staff.

Student achievements are celebrated through a reward system. House points are awarded throughout the year, recognising not only academic success but also sporting achievement, effort, attendance and good progress and certificates are presented on reaching key milestones.
