Help your kids to “Beat the Heat” with Kulluna Children are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses because their bodies do not get rid of heat as well as adults do. If the body cannot react to heat effectively, for any reason, there is a risk of heat cramps, heat exhaustion and, in extreme cases, heatstroke – a medical emergency. HEAT CRAMPS Heat cramps are brief, painful muscle cramps in the legs, arms or abdomen that may occur during, or after, vigorous exercise in extreme heat. Children are particularly at risk from heat cramps when they aren’t drinking enough fluids. If your child experiences heat cramps you need to: • Move him to a cool, shady area and give him plenty of fluids • Gently stretch and massage cramped muscles • Stop him from exercising for a few hours If the cramps do not go away then you should take your child to a doctor. HEAT EXHAUSTION Heat exhaustion is a more severe heat illness that can occur when someone in a hot environment hasn’t been drinking enough fluids. Symptoms can include: • Increased thirst • Weakness • Fainting • Heat cramps • Nausea and/or vomiting • Irritability • Headache • Increased sweating • Cool, clammy skin • Raised body temperature - more than 37°C but not higher than 40°C If your child has any of these symptoms: • Move him to a shady, or air-conditioned area, and have him lie comfortably • Cool him by splashing him with cool water, fans or cold towels. • If he is not nauseated or vomiting, have him drink chilled water, juice or a sport drink.

16 Kulluna Kids Beat the Heat Advertorial.indd 1

dohamums.com

If his symptoms are severe, or if he seems confused or is behaving oddly, take him to a doctor right away. HEATSTROKE In heatstroke, the body loses its ability to regulate its own temperature and as a result the body temperature can rise to 41°C or even higher which can lead to organ failure, brain damage and, in some instances, death. Factors that increase the risk of heatstroke include overdressing, extreme physical activity in hot weather and not drinking enough fluids. Call for emergency medical help if your child has been outside in extreme temperatures or another hot environment and shows one or more of these symptoms of heatstroke: • Severe headache • Weakness, dizziness • Confusion • Nausea • Rapid breathing and heartbeat • Loss of consciousness • Seizure • No sweating but flushed, hot, dry skin • Temperature 40°C or higher While waiting for help: • Get your child indoors or into the shade • Undress him and sponge or douse him with cool water • Do not give fluids unless your child is awake, alert and acting normally. To protect kids from heat illness: • Teach kids to always drink plenty of fluids before and during activity in hot, sunny weather – even if they are not thirsty. • Make sure kids wear light-coloured, loose clothing and use sunscreen when outdoors. • On hot or humid days encourage your kids to play outside only in the early morning, or late afternoon, to avoid the hottest part of the day. • Teach kids to come indoors, rest and hydrate immediately whenever they feel overheated. Dogs in Doha Dogs in Doha is a volunteer organization helping rescued dogs find a loving home. We are a network of people who help to rescue, foster, adopt and find missing dogs. We do not have a shelter but rely on the kindness of people to foster or sponsor a dog while we work to find a forever home. All dogs that are ready for adoption have been to a professional vet and are healthy, have been vaccinated, spay / neutered and micro-chipped. Our philosophy is 'Don't Shop, Adopt', help us to spread the word. If you are interested in volunteering, fostering or adopting a dog into your family please contact us.

Baby Sign Language by: Jacqueline Bodnar If you have an infant you may not be looking forward to the temper tantrums that will soon come along. To help circumvent the communication barrier that often comes with the toddler tantrum stage, many parents have turned to sign language.

T

eaching sign language to babies not only has lasting benefits but has become an innovative way that parents are working to help their child get ahead.

Most programs that teach sign language use everyday practical terms that relate to a baby’s life. The most common first terms usually include “milk”, “more”, “eat” and other words related to meals, bedtime and bathing. Additional first words may include “cat”, “dog”, “baby”, “mommy” and “daddy.” Toddlers often throw tantrums as a result of feeling frustrated because they are not able to verbally express themselves. Learning sign language as a baby is believed to help reduce tantrums because as toddlers, they have a way to communicate. Research has also shown that teaching sign language stimulates intellectual development. “There is a significant percentage of children who speak earlier when their parents sign with them,” explains Nancy Cadjan, president of Sign Babies (www.signbabies.com). “And even those who speak at a normal rate have an easier time learning language and an increased vocabulary when they do begin speaking.”

esteem and confidence and many believe that it strengthens the parent-child bond. You should see results from your teaching efforts within a couple of months. But keep in mind that older babies will catch on faster. It’s recommended to start teaching your baby sign language around eight months, although some people do start at six months. Even if your baby is a year old or more it’s not too late to start teaching them.

“ You should see results from your teaching efforts within a couple of months.” If you would like to teach your baby sign language there are a variety of ways that you can get started. There are books, videos and web sites that offer a plethora of information as well as links to online visual signing dictionaries. Resources: BabySigns.com Sign2Me.com babysignlanguage.com/

When babies have this ability to communicate their needs, it is also believed to increase their self

Help your kids to “Beat the Heat” by remembering to ACT. Heatstroke can also happen when a child is left in a car on a hot day. When the outside temperature is 33.9°C the temperature inside a car can reach 51.7°C within 20 minutes! Reduce the number of deaths from heatstroke by remembering to ACT.

A. C. T.

Avoid heatstroke-related injury and death by never leaving your child alone in a car, not even for a minute. And make sure to keep your car locked when you’re not in it so kids don’t get in on their own. Create reminders by putting something in the back of your car next to your child such as a briefcase, a purse or a cell phone that is needed at your final destination. This is especially important if you’re not following your normal routine. Take action. If you see a child alone in a car, call 999. Emergency personnel want you to call. They are trained to respond to these situations. One call could save a life.

beat the heat

RESPONSIBLY by: Ghenwa Yehia-Malaeb

With the weather heating up quickly in Doha, there’s no doubt we’ll all be looking for great ways to cool down. But before you crank up the air conditioners, just take a second to think about what would happen if we all did that; Mother Nature wouldn’t be too happy! Get rid of hidden heat sources. Invest in eco-friendly light bulbs and turn off unused appliances which give off heat and waste energy even when they are not in use.

1 2

Open a window or turn on a ceiling fan. Creating a breeze or draft will have a cooling effect as it blows over your skin.

Clean out your air conditioner filters. Clean filters are more efficient on a warmer temperature setting. Invest in white or light-coloured window shades, drapes or blinds. Light colours deflect the sun’s heat rays and keep them from being absorbed into your home.

56

3

Luckily there’s no need to resign yourself to months of peeling yourself off of sweat-soaked surfaces and assuming a lethargic daze of inactivity. Check out these environmentally-friendly ways to beat the heat responsibly!

4 5

Turn off your air conditioner when you leave home. It’s just common sense!

Remember: Follow these tips and you can definitely beat the heat responsibly in Doha this summer! You’ll save more than one type of green: the environment and your hard-earned money, too!

“I came across Bio-Oil by chance when someone at my neighbourhood pharmacy recommended it to me, and I’ve been using it ever since. When I was pregnant the relaxing time at the end of the day, after my bath, was my husband’s and my communication time with our baby. He would help me rub Bio-Oil into my stomach and it was a special way for us to welcome a new member of my family. My midwife was amazed when she saw my stomach after my son was born. I did not get a single stretch mark.”

The product most recommended by doctors for scars & stretch marks. [IPSOS], [2012]

Emi with Kazuma

Bio-Oil® helps reduce the possibility of pregnancy stretch marks forming by increasing the skin’s elasticity. It should be applied twice daily from the start of the second trimester. For comprehensive product information, and details of clinical trials, please visit bio-oil.com. Bio-Oil is available at pharmacies and selected retailers at the recommended selling price of QR 45.00 (60ml). Individual results will vary.
