When tennis legends Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf occupied the pinnacle of their sport, it’s difficult to imagine their multiple grand slam wins could be topped. A longtime couple – the American with on-court showmanship and the elegant yet powerful German – they were among the most famous people in the world for a time. They now fund programs that change the lives of disadvantaged children, and that has given them their life’s greatest sense of achievement. The pair are humble and warm in a manner that not all athletes of their renown are; some current players should take note. ●

““I am Hayden Cox” … and I’m a tech and design entrepreneur I didn’t know I wanted to be a designer until I
shaped my first surfboard at 15 during a week's work experience in Mona Vale. I always liked to deconstruct things and piece them together, but that was the moment it really clicked for me. I have always been inspired by the cycle of design, development and testing the product for myself. I didn't go to university until four years after finishing high school. It was mum who pushed me to study a business degree, but I quit after a year and a half into it. I found on-the-job experience and training to work better. I was happily learning along the way and it was giving me the direction I needed to start my own business. My mum and grandfather have a good do-ityourself attitude and it rubbed off. They inspired me to start my own company, Haydenshapes Surfboards, in 2006. You face a million failures until you get to the finish line, but I have learnt that being successful is about knowing how to get through those moments. I met my wife Danielle in 2007, and two years later we started working together. My career turning point happened when I created the FutureFlex technology surfboard, which gave me uniqueness over others. I set the tone and changed the landscape of the surf industry and won awards for my effort. Since the late ’60s, surfboards have traditionally been made with a wooden stringer down the centre of the board. I removed that stringer and replaced it with a patented parabolic carbon fibre frame. You get the ultimate speed as a result and it gives the surfer a great experience. When Westpac approached me to be the first Australian designer to create their pay wear accessories, I was thrilled to take on the job. I design pay and tap items that you wear and it got me thinking about how I could change the landscape of how Australians shop – what if you didn't have to carry your debit and credit cards around any more? The range is called Centsitive Objects, with pins and waterproof wristbands so you can exercise, surf and swim wallet-free. ● ● westpac.com.au ● haydenshapes.com

t’s been 15 years since tennis champion and former world No. 1 Steffi Graf was last in Melbourne, and on her recent return – with husband Andre Agassi, who coached Grigor Dimitrov at the Australian Open – she reflected on the journey from the court on Rod Laver Arena to life beyond tennis. The power pair have won 30 grand slam events between them – put simply, they ruled the world tennis circuit at the tail end of the ’80s, ’90s and beyond. “I have so many great memories of Melbourne. I even remember playing at Kooyong,” says Graf, who won her first Australian Open in 1988 against American great Chris Evert. Agassi has fond memories of winning, too – taking out four Australian Open titles, his first in 1995 against Pete Sampras and his last in 2003 against Rainer Schuttler. “Melbourne always had a great vibe. I was here a year ago with Longines and it’s so good to be in a city that really gets behind sport,” Agassi says. Graf and Agassi are celebrating 10 years as ambassadors with the iconic Swiss watchmaker, which has just opened its first Melbourne boutique and released 10 luxury Conquest VHP models in their honour. Globally, the 10 sets raised more than $US300,000 ($418,000), with proceeds going to their respective charities, the Andre Agassi Foundation and Graf’s Children for Tomorrow. Two were purchased by Australian buyers. “I don’t know what ambassadorship looks like but, for us, if it doesn’t inspire us on a very personal

level, then it doesn’t interest us,” Agassi says. Agassi’s Foundation alone has opened more than 90 schools to help educate underprivileged kids in his home town of Las Vegas. He says being a world champion matters little compared to giving a child an opportunity to study. “Looking back, it’s been a daunting journey starting the foundation and certainly an unpredictable one,” says Agassi, who dropped out of school in eighth grade to focus on his tennis career under the heavy rule of his father. “Building schools and seeing the lives it impacts is mind-blowing. “Despite what anyone thinks I have achieved, the process has done more for me than people might imagine. I get my daily motivations and inspiration from the kids. “They give me hope that no amount of winning on the tennis circuit could give.”

gassi says if he had his time again he wouldn’t play tennis at all but, since retiring from the sport in 2006, he has found a new passion as a coach. In 2017, he was asked to coach this year’s Australian Open champ Novak Djokovic. He’s now helping the Bulgarian-born Dimitrov, 27, who has holidayed with the Agassi-Graf clan in Atlanta and stayed at their home in Las Vegas. “When you play the game it’s heavy stress and no pressure, whereas coaching is all pressure and no stress,” he says. Graf, who is sitting beside him, adds: “Oh, it’s a little bit of stress.”

The couple are at ease with one another during the interview at Crown Towers, sitting closely on a couch, surrounded by a spinning parade of PRtypes. Agassi occasionally places his hand on Graf’s knee when he begins answering on their behalf, but Graf is more than happy to enter the conversation. Graf has never been one for the spotlight, even when she was at the top of her game. The two-time Olympic champion and 22 grand slam event winner doesn’t boast about her victories but is grateful for the life it has given her. Happily married for 17 years, the couple have two children – son Jaden Gil, 17, and daughter Jaz Elle, 15. “It was a relief to walk away from the game,” Graf says. “But, of course, I am thankful for the experiences, memories and what the sport gave me and I’m sitting here because of it. “Tennis is such an intense sport, physically and mentally. I was yearning for a more balanced life. I was ready for a new way of life when I retired.” Agassi says the couple gave up their own childhoods to later be rewarded with the privilege of being hands-on parents. “We are lucky to have been there every step of the way for our kids,” Agassi says. Graf says: “It’s like everybody tells you, time flies and before you know it they’ve grown up. I cherish every moment. They’re great kids.” As the topic swings from family to fashion, Graf is in her element. That’s when Agassi reclines with his hands above his head and says, “I think I’ll stay out of this one”. “I love fashion,” Graf says. Agassi interjects: “Oh yeah, she’s totally Gucci and has all the labels.” Graf: “I am very in-tune. To me, a Stella McCartney dress is the ultimate perfection.” Agassi, who dined with Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani in the ’90s, admits he knew the name but not much about the man at the time. “Anyway, it’s all about Nike at home right now,” he says, looking at Graf, who shoots him a playful sideways expression. “Nike’s Off-White collaboration is what our kids are all about. That guy is killing it,” she says. The guy in question is creative director Virgil Abloh, who Agassi will certainly be hearing more of if their kids have their way. “They’re begging for that stuff,” says Graf of the cult sneaker. Agassi looks at her, and is happy to concede defeat on that one. ●

Songs take centre stage Hollywood veteran Jeff Goldblum talks about music, style, acting … and all that jazz.
A
s one of Hollywood’s most charming actors, Jeff Goldblum is embracing his renaissance moment. The 66-year-old, known for iconic roles in Jurassic Park and Thor: Ragnarok, can now add silver fox style icon and jazz king to his repertoire, thanks to the release of a debut album with his band, the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra. Goldblum has been playing in jazz clubs since the ’90s, but didn’t really come to the attention of any major label until he was spotted playing piano for his friend Gregory Porter while on Britain’s Graham Norton Show last year. Sitting backstage were the team at Decca who offered him a label deal. It seemed too good to refuse.

“There are certainly similarities in what I do with acting and jazz,” offers Goldblum, who called on comedian Sarah Silverman and American Idol’s Haley Reinhart to help out in the studio. “They both come from a place of passion and a love of doing it. I studied early on with a great acting teacher named Sandy Meisner and a cornerstone of his early training was improvisation. “With jazz, there’s a need to listen to the other players and make something up on the spot. It’s about being present, playful and finding your own unique voice. You can apply that rule to the world of acting too.” The Capitol Studio Sessions was a dream come true for Goldblum, who started playing piano at 15. Inducted into the world of rock ’n’ roll via The Beatles, it was jazz that lit his internal flame as a teen. He started performing in cocktail clubs in his hometown, Pittsburgh, and when he moved to New York in 1974, his obsession didn’t stop even though he moved there to launch into acting.
The lounge lizard has also become a style aficionado thanks to the help of his personal stylist Andrew T. Vottero. Goldblum’s kooky crooner cool is captured in some fine sartorial choices that swerve from rockabilly, flame-drenched Prada shirts to zebra print shoes, flamboyant socks, slick suiting custom made by Prada and Saint Laurent, and those country ’n’ western spun shirts by Isabel Marant that give his jazz reputation a rock ’n’ roll yearning. “I enjoy dressing up,” Goldblum says, taking this interview phone call while observing his wardrobe and reeling off the brands in front of him. “I got interested in clothes with acting,” he adds. “I have had the chance to work with some great costume designers over the years. I guess as I have gotten older, I’ve found my place in it all. “I love Saint Laurent. They made those zebra shoes and Prada – what a damn fine aesthetic they Continued p10

I have really enjoyed working with them. I am just having a good time with it. I am certainly not complaining.” His film work is just as intriguing, appearing in Woody Allen’s classic Annie Hall, in the ’80s comedy drama The Big Chill, playing the eccentric Alistair in The Life Aquatic alongside Bill Murray and Steve Zissou, tackling aliens in Independence Day and then as a CIA agent in the espionage thriller by Hal Hartley, Fay Grim. A career highlight was working with Steven Spielberg on Independence Day and with Wes Anderson on several films including Isle of Dogs. Yet, Goldblum still describes himself as a “humble student” learning along the way. “I always wanted to be an actor ever since I was kid aged 10,” he says. “But I also loved playing the piano and fell in love

with it. I got a couple of gigs in Pittsburgh at 15 and once I moved to New York, I kept playing my piano every day and snuck in a movie or two in between it all. “About 30 years ago, I started playing with terrific musicians in Los Angeles and with the help of my friend John Mastro [who directs the live shows] it just grew. It’s been something we love to do.” Goldblum certainly doesn’t let his age weary him. He became a first time father at 60 and has two sons now aged five (Charlie Ocean) and three (River Joe) with former Olympic gymnast Emilie Livingston, whom he married in 2014. “Parenting certainly changes your perspective on life. It keeps it interesting,” he says as he negotiates a three-year-old to another room while he speaks to a “lady from Australia”. “Actually Charlie Ocean took his first swim at a Gold Coast beach when I was filming Thor: Ragnarok in 2016 with Chris Hemsworth and Cate Blanchett,” he says.

Twisting tale of two lost girls T H E R E VI E W

he premise of Louisa Luna’s taut thriller is one that would terrify any parent. Single mum Jamie Brandt leaves her two daughters in her car for five minutes while she dashes into a suburban Kmart to buy a birthday present. When she returns, 10-year-old Kylie and her eight-year old sister, Bailey, have gone. So begins an engrossing mystery bulging with memorable characters. When the overstretched local police department struggles for leads, Jamie turns to unconventional bounty hunter Alice Vega, who has an impressive track record of finding abducted kids. Vega, in turn, links up with disgraced former local detective, Max Caplan (Cap), who sees the case as a chance to restore his reputation. Together they make the most entertaining crimefighting duo since Batman and Robin, as they dive
into the dark underbelly of the small Pennsylvanian town in desperate search for the missing girls. Initially wary of each other, Vega and Cap grow closer as they confront small-town criminals and local families with secrets to hide, all while trying to offer hope to the increasingly distraught Brandt. Through her grief, Brandt is horrified at being seen as a bad mother, even though a gnawing guilt eats away at her. Luna keeps the reader guessing, through no shortage of false leads and sensational

I’m neither one half of a honeymoon couple or a parent with a young family – The Mulia’s main demographics – but being alone among this level of luxury is a wonderful, slightly surreal and possibly awkward experience. I sit down for afternoon tea on a lazy Sunday afternoon. A smiling young waitress approaches. “Just you today?” “Yes, just me.” “Well,” she says, “you’re not alone. You are surrounded by friends.” Boom! Can that be trained or is it just oldfashioned charm and loveliness? Either way it says a lot about this superb facility at Nusa Dua, Bali, about 20 minutes from the airport and 40 minutes from the bustle of Seminyak, where everyone is delightful, professional and helpful. Afternoon tea – included every day – is a delicious mix of tiny treats including eclairs, strawberry panacotta, scones and raw salmon with cream cheese. escort me out. I ain’t going anywhere. I’ve got my book and nowhere to be. If I did go anywhere it would be back to my villa to sit by my private pool. My villa is simply luxurious: huge bed, living area, his/hers bathroom with Jacuzzi, private pool and “pavilion” area. Oh, did I mention a butler? He’s who you call when you need to get anywhere: he’ll pick you up in
a buggy. He’s also the one who writes a note that says he’s prepared your spa. Yes, I could get used to this. In fact, I don’t want to leave, which is handy because it’s the type of place where you don’t need to leave because it’s all here. Spend the day around the huge beach-side pool, or on a lounge chair on the private beach. Or give yourself over to an experience in The Mulia Spa. Massage and treatments are not cheap, but definitely have one. Any more blissed out and I’d be writing poetry or something equally relaxing. Or maybe eating. Dining is a big deal here. Breakfast outside overlooking the water rather than the slightly dark inside cafe. The breakfasts – buffet or a la carte – are superb. Saturday night I dined at Edogin, a Japanese restaurant with a twist: it’s buffet-style where you choose your fish/lamb/beef, hand it to the chef and they’ll bring it to you. Or choose the yakatori or a dazzling array of sushi and sashimi. Families with young kids are very welcome here. Possibly the most amazing meal was “brunch” at Soleil restaurant, a Sunday-only event. And event is the word. You’re not sure whether to work your way through each station or take 100 photos.
Who is this for? Not singles. Take your beau/belle or young family and settle in. There’s a kid’s club so couples can have some time. With its three chapels, super-glam weddings are a major event here. This is a good Bali option if you want to get away from the craziness of Seminyak. Sure, you pay for it, but The Mulia is excellent high-end luxury. ● ● themulia.com/bali

If you’re feeling puffy and lethargic, your comfy jeans are digging into your sides and vegetables are a thing of the past, it’s time to dust off your runners and get ready to bounce back from that blowout. The motto that I encourage all my 28ers to follow and the one that I live my life by is “progress, not perfection”. Too often we get caught up in trying to be 10/10 in all areas of life, but the reality is we aren’t perfect. MOVE YOUR BODY \ Exercising after a blowout can go one of two ways. You either feel full and tired and therefore every move is a struggle or you have heaps of extra energy and manage to power through. Whichever way it goes, I never regret sweating it out and always feels so much better after. It might really hurt, you might feel sluggish, and like you’ve gone so far backwards (you probably haven’t) but it will get that ball rolling and kickstart that positive momentum to get you back into a great routine.
unhealthy meal is nothing but one missed workout or one unhealthy meal. It’s not the end of the world, just don’t make it a habit. So, if you need a few tips on how to get back on track, keep reading. DITCH THE GUILT & MOVE ON \ You can’t change
the past so don’t waste energy thinking about it when that energy can be used to move forward. Regretting what you ate isn’t going to burn any calories, so why bother? If I’ve had an indulgent day (OK, or week), I like to use the next day to motivate myself to set up for a great week ahead. I’ll get in a big workout in the morning, do some meal prep and plan out my week (workouts and meals) so, essentially, I’ll turn that negative into a positive.
OVERCOMPENSATE \ I’m all for eating a little
cleaner the next day or week but please do not skip your meals or starve yourself to make up for unhealthy choices. Restrictive behaviours can often cause you to feel deprived, leading to another episode of overindulging and overeating, and this can then become a toxic cycle. see this all the time. People eat one bad meal or have one bad day and then throw in the towel. Eating one cookie does not mean you should finish the packet. If you dropped your phone and it cracked, you wouldn’t continue to throw it onto the floor until the screen was in a million pieces, would you?

your best friend when you’ve gone overboard on salt, sugar and fatty foods. Aim to consume two to three litres a day. SET A 28-DAY GOAL \ To maintain accountability and focus for a great four-week block that will guarantee you are well and truly back, set yourself a small, realistic and achievable 28-day goal. Even if you think you have a healthy relationship with food and a balanced approach to eating, binge eating and blowouts can still happen – you’re human, after all. If you can mindfully indulge in the things you love, you’ll never feel deprived or feel the urge to go overboard on whatever it is you think you’re missing out on. ●

ALBERT PARK \ 1 FINLAY STREET 2

Behind a striking, Notting Hill-esque blue door, this Albert Park residence offers the convenience of inner-city living with the comfort and lifestyle of the seaside suburbs, and is only a short walk from St Vincent Gardens. Single-fronted Victorian renovations are common in Melbourne, but few successfully hit the sweet spot between honouring the heritage of the building and truly innovative modern design. Here, architect-builder Blu Seven has completed an extension and renovation that combines bespoke finishes, cutting-edge design and touches of vintage inspiration. In true Victorian style, first room past the heritage facade – and the blue door – is the master bedroom, complete with designer en suite, built-in wardrobe and vintage finishes, including plantation window shutters and elegant cornices. Down the wide hallway – with floor-to-ceiling windows allowing in plenty of light – the home opens into a stylish living and dining room. A bright, state-of-the-art kitchen with a skylight has marble benches and splash back, white and black cabinetry, Zug and Miele appliances, walk-in pantry and an integrated fridge-freezer. More floor-to-ceiling windows and doors open to a private north-facing courtyard, with landscaped features including travertine paving, a built-in barbecue bench and auto-gate to side right of way. An outdoor sanctuary in the middle of the home, the courtyard features black steel-framed doors, and windows trims that continue throughout the home. A second double bedroom with a built-in wardrobe is upstairs, as well as a modern bathroom with custom
