It feels like we have a celebrity on our cover this week. Tallagandra Hill winery in Gundaroo can lay claim to hosting Aussie icons – from Jimmy Barnes to Troy Cassar-Daley – as the region’s premier wine, music and event destination. We chatted to the owners about how they’ve poured their creative energy into the 15-hectare property, which you may have visited yourself! More on page 12. Perhaps, we could then say our Home of the Week is celebrity adjacent, given it resides right near the prime minister’s Canberra residence, The Lodge. The dress-circle home is filled with character and in the perfect spot to bump into the head of government and invite them to tea!
Griffith is known for its heritage-listed cottages and classic red-brick homes, and 13a Mitchell Street takes the best of this iconic style and serves it with the best in modern design.
The bold exterior contrasts red bricks with dark vertical cladding, while the interiors pair polished concrete floors with stone, marble and timber accents. Belle Property Canberra’s Louise Harget says it makes a statement.
“The building beautifully highlights top-tier materials and concepts,” she says. “Every corner has been crafted to create a space that is both alluring and impeccably finished.”
A smart floor plan across two levels provides dual living areas, with three bedrooms upstairs and the mainbedroom suite on the ground floor. This space, and a study, capture serene views of two separate courtyards.
Glass doors lead to a covered poolside al fresco space – with a built-in barbecue and heaters – that is perfect year-round. The private sale has a guide of circa $3 million.

lump bunches of vermentino grapes hang off the lush green vines, catching the morning sun. Most of them have already been picked for winemaking. The 2025 harvest was a good one, ready for the final vintage that David Faulks and Mary McAvoy will sprinkle their magic over.
The couple are selling Tallagandra Hill Winery after nine years, having decided it’s time to find something else to fuel their creativity.
“David and I like the building [aspect] of making things happen and creating something amazing,” McAvoy says. They’ve certainly done that at Tallagandra, which sits just 30 minutes from Canberra’s CBD.
When they bought the estate in 2016, it was already well regarded for its wines. Now it’s so much more.
Faulks loves his music, and a wall in the living room of the four-bedroom on-site house is lined with his vinyl collection, with a turntable nearby. In the cellar door, which seats 50 people,
is a vintage jukebox full of singles from all eras, covered in the signatures of the artists who’ve performed next door in the events hall.
Big names, including Jimmy Barnes, Kate Ceberano, Kasey Chambers, Kate Miller-Heidke and Troy Cassar-Daly, have been regulars at Tallagandra.
“Family, really,” Faulks says.
The venue space with heritage timber features seats 170 – perfect for weddings and corporate events – and includes a commercial kitchen, a separate bar and a mezzanine level with a boardroom.
But it’s intimate and distinctive, the mood relaxed. It’s like you’ve been invited into a lounge room and an icon such as Jimmy Barnes just happens to be sitting in the corner, singing.
As much as he loves his music, Faulks, who came from a corporate background, is proudest of the vineyard on the 15.3-hectare property.
“I’m extremely proud of the health and productivity of the vineyard,” he says. “I had absolutely no background in farming,
let alone viticulture, and it was the least likely thing for me to succeed in.”
Faulks says it has been a steep learning curve and a humbling experience.
“To see something you’ve actually grown, from the soil that you’ve tended, that’s brought me great joy,” he says.
That connection to the land is something else that’s grown since they’ve been custodians of Tallagandra.
“I’ve lived in Australia for 25 years,” says McAvoy, who grew up in Ireland. “I remember coming through the gates here on that very first day, and for the first time I felt a connection to the land.”
Their fellow winemakers and farmers across the next paddock provide a real sense of community and a connection to the area in so many different ways.
The couple point out three massive gum trees near the property’s three bespoke, self-contained, onebedroom cottages.
“They’re more than 500 years old,” McAvoy says. “They give you a real sense of what was here before the vineyard.”
The first grapes were planted in the 1990s. Alongside the vermentino, there are viognier, cabernet franc, shiraz, tempranillo and cabernet sauvignon.
“I had absolutely no background in farming, let alone viticulture, and it was the least likely thing for me to succeed in.” David Faulks
Each wine is named after a family member. The Eva rosé is named after McAvoy’s mother, who still can’t believe her daughter turned her corporate husband into a farmer.
The Great Ron shiraz is named for Faulks’ father, who passed away shortly before his 96th birthday.
“We like to tell a story any way we can,” Faulks says.
They’re sad at the idea of leaving Tallagandra Hill, but it’s time to start a new chapter. There’s a guest house in Ireland they’re renovating to be closer to Mary’s family for a part of the year. And they’re keen to spend more time with their grandchildren in Canberra.
“It’s time for someone else to take the reins here,” Faulks says. “We’ve got the place buzzing along so someone can just come in without missing a beat.
“It’s time for someone to come and sing their own song.”

There are many indulgent amenities going into luxury homes these days – and why not? If you’ve got it, enjoy it.
A high-end residence has undoubtedly become the ultimate status symbol, and aspirations have been unleashed as the lines begin to blur between a home and a six-star resort.
Mario Sanfrancesco, who lists this week’s feature property built by Blackett Homes, says the building’s design was informed by significant feedback.
“High-end buyers have told us in recent years what they expect to find in a luxury home,” he says.
“The Turner home reflects that with its inclusion of amenities, including a pool, sauna, wine cellar and massive basement garage.”
Sanfrancesco says that approach is further emphasised by the quality of the builder’s selection of fixtures, fittings and finishes.
“The attention to detail is exemplary, as seen, say, in the standard of joinery that
demonstrates high-level craftsmanship,” he says.
Blackett Homes founder Geoff Howarth says contemporary buyers closely follow trends in home design.
“I think this encourages greater thinking around the lifestyle they want to create,” he says. “In the luxury market, there’s the opportunity to realise that dream.”
Howarth says high-end buyers often have the need for more space, so lifestyle amenities are being included.
It starts with a vision of the end product, and when it comes to luxury, a 3D space needs 3D thinking to co-ordinate the build, the inclusions, the fixtures, fittings and finishes.
The solution is in the detail, and a trophy home needs high-end selections, like bespoke cabinetry, stone countertops and flooring systems. Add lighting design, brand appliances, Wi-Fi systems and automation.
Inject a big helping of wow factor. Cellars, mineral pools, saunas, outdoor kitchens, home theatres and basement garages top the Rich List bling.
There is a definite trend towards greater levels of luxury in new builds, especially those rising up in established suburbs with price tags to match.
This home in Turner certainly showcases the new high-end lifestyle “musts”, including a mineral pool, sauna, wine cellar, outdoor kitchen and seven-car basement garage (with vehicle turntable).
The single-storey home presents from the kerb as a variation on the pavilion style through an aesthetically pleasing
combination of geometric shapes and cladding, including timber.
Inside, the forward section mainly comprises the sleeping zone, with minor bedrooms on one side and the main-bedroom suite, study and formal living room on the other.
The main offers a custom walk-in wardrobe, and a luxe en suite featuring Avant Stone finishes and further highend material selections.
The impressive kitchen features Avant quartzite benchtops, custom Polytec

vinyl-wrap joinery, and ambient strip lighting. The brand-name appliances include a Gaggenau induction cooktop, multiple ovens, two dishwashers, and a Zip HydroTap.
The generous living zone flows seamlessly to a timber-lined outdoor entertaining space highlighted by a Ziegler & Brown barbecue, Dekton benchtop and Husky drinks chiller.
This entertaining area overlooks an inviting heated mineral swimming pool and outdoor shower.
The lower level of the home is equipped with a full bar, an impressive wine cellar and that indulgent sauna. Then, there’s that massive seven-car garage.

Coombs is one of those areas that takes you by surprise. As one of the first suburbs to appear in the Molonglo Valley, it sits on the northern side of John Gorton Drive, tucked against the Molonglo River.
There are a growing number of apartment developments as well as freestanding homes, but it’s managed to maintain its connection with nature.
It has views to a collection of hills that flow through to the National Arboretum and out west to the Brindabellas, and many open spaces are tucked away among the suburban streets.
Luton agent Josh Wilson loves this aspect of the suburb.
“Coombs has many excellent parks and nature trails,” he says. “It’s a great spot for a young family, and it’s on the doorstop of Mount Stromlo if you’re into mountain biking.
“You can be surrounded by nature, and you’re only 15 minutes from the city.”
Indeed, it’s this ease of access to the city, and to Belconnen and Woden via the nearby Tuggeranong Parkway, that’s generating interest in Coombs.
“The market has picked up in Coombs this year after a downturn in the last quarter of 2024,” Wilson says.
“We’ve seen a 25 per cent increase in buyer inspections at open homes, and we recently sold a townhouse after the first open home for $26,000 over the owner’s expectation.”
One of Canberra’s best play spaces, Ruth Park, is near Holdens Creek Pond, with a wombat sculpture paying tribute to the children’s book The Muddle Headed Wombat written by Ruth Park herself.
Wilson says Coombs is attracting a broad cross-section of buyers.
“There are first-home buyers looking to get into the market, investors interested in apartments and townhouses, and families looking to purchase larger homes,” he says.
Eighty/Twenty is a wellknown Canberra cafe, and the Coombs venue doesn’t disappoint. It’s the perfect place for grabbing a quick coffee if you’re on the go.
T-Bone on Fairhall Street is the ideal local. It serves quality pub grub such as pizzas and burgers alongside fancier dishes. There’s a good-value kids’ menu too.
Coombs is full of great outdoor spots, and the nature trail along the Molonglo River reaches the National Arboretum. It’s great to see how it changes with the seasons.
Lifestyle: Located in the Molonglo Valley region, Coombs offers an appealing variety of dwellings and a close connection to nature, all just 15 minutes from the city centre. Its unique charms are attracting a broad range of home buyers.

Not everyone can say they live across the street from the prime minister, but the new custodian of this Deakin cottage certainly will.
Perfectly poised opposite The Lodge, with a distinguished address on National Circuit, this red-brick beauty holds its own. Set on 2016 square metres of beautifully manicured gardens, the home is steeped in character, offering plenty of charm from a bygone era without feeling dated.
High ceilings, sash windows and ornate cornices bring the craftsmanship, while
modern updates ensure comfortable family living.
A stately semi-circular driveway not only adds to the home’s grandeur but also offers a gracious welcome and effortless off-street parking.
The layout includes five bedrooms, the fifth of which can double as a library.
The main-bedroom suite has a walkthrough wardrobe and en suite, while bedroom two also boasts an en suite and views over the pool.
The formal dining and sitting rooms are each anchored by a period fireplace.
The kitchen, updated yet understated, flows into the sunlit family room and out to a generous terrace.
Within the lush boundaries, an automated in-ground sprinkler system keeps the gardens pictureperfect year-round.
Tall trees provide seclusion, while a full-sized pool promises long afternoons of escape.
And hidden beneath the four-car garage? A temperature-controlled wine cellar – because diplomatic negotiations tend to require a good bottle or two.
Top schools and boutique shopping are close by, and some of Canberra’s top cafes will become your go-tos. What the agent says

Deakin has carved a niche for itself as a prime location for businesses, particularly those with a focus in medical, allied health and professional services.
And why not? The suburb is close to the CBD, Woden, the Parliamentary Triangle and private hospitals.
Good reasons, then, for investors to take a very close look at this big, fully leased and free-standing building in popular Geils Court.
Especially when they run their fingers along the ledger’s bottom line that details an annual net rent of nearly $500,000.
The building is on more than 2000 square metres at the corner of Geils Court and Denison Street, and set among thoughtfully landscaped gardens and courtyards.
The building dates to the early 1990s. It has 14 basement and six on-grade vehicle parking bays, and two basement storage
areas, and comes to the market for the first time in 15 years.
It is secured by three high-end office tenants with strong lease covenants, ensuring stable long-term income.
