The editor’s desk

I have nothing but admiration for the two extraordinary Melburnians in this week’s issue of Domain Review. Firstly, anyone who is prepared to wake up to a 3.30am alarm and then make Victorians laugh before 6am – even in the midst of a global pandemic – deserves a medal. Jane Rocca’s interview with ABC Radio Melbourne’s Sammy J gives an enlightening insight into the cheeky father-of-two who many of us enjoy waking up to five days a week. And then there is the awe-inspiring Kylie Watson-Wheeler – Disney Australia’s senior vice-president and managing director and Doggies president.  ●

lthough Melbourne hospitality reintroduced indoor dining ahead of schedule, November is a fine month to appreciate our city outdoors. What better way to do so than by clinking glasses and filling our bellies en plein air? Here are some suggestions on where to book. It’s going to be one delicious summer. HARLOW \ RICHMOND ARBORY AFLOAT \ CBD

Take a trip to Turkey at Arbory Afloat, the 69-metre bar and restaurant that pops up on the Yarra River over summer. Each year brings a different theme, and ’21 sees

Turkish-inspired snacks, sandwiches, pizzas and cocktails at the Turkish Riviera-style beach club, with swimming pool. Bookings essential. 2 Flinders Walk, Melbourne

If you fancy a lover boy on a rooftop, head to Harlow. The aforementioned cocktail is made with Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz Gin, blood orange, pineapple, cranberry and lime and is best sipped on the wraparound rooftop with stellar views of the CBD. There’s also a sheltered beer garden downstairs, and four-legged friends are welcome to join.

This is one of the city’s most hidden and underrated outdoor dining areas. Sharing the Sofitel driveway, it’s covered but also has umbrellas and heaters – both city-chic and appropriate for Melbourne’s unpredictable weather. EPOCHA \ CARLTON

OLD PALM LIQUOR \

VESPER BISTRO & BAR \

South Melbourne favourite St Ali has kept its parklet, which transformed the street-art-adorned lane behind Coventry Street into an Italian-style, open-air dining destination last year. Festoon lights and greenery drape over pastel tiling, while umbrellas complete the summer vibes. Bonus points for the CBD backdrop.

Across the road from the Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens, Epocha’s outdoor area is all greenery and terraced loveliness. A two-course weekend lunch here is $65 (dinner is three courses for $95) and might feature beef carpaccio with truffle puree followed by Aylesbury duck breast with cabbage, carob and date.

BRUNSWICK EAST

SOUTH YARRA

OPL has a smattering of street-side tables and a nostalgic, ’70s-inspired sheltered courtyard. This is the kind of wine bar you want to eat at. That might mean grilled squid with lardo XO, grilled eggplant with smoked peanuts and adobo glaze, or another bottle of natural wine for the table.

Vesper is a Mediterranean, longlunch haven with a gorgeous, private courtyard and trickling fountain on Toorak Road. Settle in with a tasting menu or indulge in the $45-a-head “pearls and caviar” – three snacks with different types of fish eggs. Martinis optional but recommended.

PAUL JEFFERS

A

s the senior vice president and managing director of the Walt Disney Company Australia & New Zealand, Kylie WatsonWheeler would usually travel to Los Angeles three times a year – a ritual she’s been accustomed to for 18 years. But over the past two years, she has traded long-haul flights for lounge-room Zooms from her bayside home in Melbourne to get the job done. Launching Disney+ in November 2019 was the premonition nobody saw coming in terms of aligning with an ensuing pandemic, but it certainly helped push the streaming brand into our homes in a way that might not have been as meteoric had we not spent as much time indoors. Watson-Wheeler made plenty of use of the service herself – she binged on all 31 seasons of The Simpsons, got hooked on Only Murder in the Building starring Steve Martin, Martin Sharp and Selena Gomez, and says many more great things are to come. “While my main responsibility is looking at ways in which we distribute our content from digital to streaming, TV and live shows, we’re at a point now where we can commission content for our audiences here and [in] New Zealand. That’s what I’m really excited about,” says Watson-Wheeler. “We also want deeper connections with local audiences. The industry here is extraordinary – all areas of content creation from storytellers to postproduction and everything in between is what we’ll be looking for. It’s great we can engage them in this next phase.” The married mother of two [she has a daughter aged 15 and a son in his first year of university, aged 19] says being home has allowed extra time with family that she might not ever get again in such powerful doses. “It’s such a new world and hard to believe I have barely been in the office,” Watson-Wheeler says. “But having family time and really recognising the importance of doing things together has been great. “We’ve also realised how meaningful we are to each other – that might not have been entirely realised if we kept going the way we were prior to the pandemic.” Last December, she was unanimously voted in by the Western Bulldogs’ board of directors to become president at the AFL club. She’s been a big supporter of the club since she was a kid, attending with her father and sister most weekends.

K Y LI E WAT S O N -W H E E L E R

Disney’s Aussie queen “I have always barracked for the Western Bulldogs,” says Watson-Wheeler who was also involved in the process of achieving the naming rights for Marvel Stadium – a world first. “I never thought I would be in this position as president and didn’t seek out the job. I was asked to help the club out with my expertise 10 years ago and one thing led to another. I joined the board, became vice-president and then president,” she says. An AFL grand final loss against Melbourne this year might not have been the outcome she had

hoped for but Watson-Wheeler looks at life more philosophically than that. “From my perspective, there is no question I am incredibly proud of our players,” she says. “They had to show an amazing amount of resilience travelling across the country and the uncertainty that came with that. Then they were locked down in the lead-up to the AFL grand final, all very difficult circumstances. I know it’s not ideal they didn’t win, but it was a very special moment and you need to be proud of that.”  ●

COVER STORY

MORNING CHEEK Comedian Sammy J is bringing a much-needed touch of levity to ABC Melbourne’s breakfast radio.

A

self-confessed nerd who made a name for himself in Melbourne’s comedy scene with a purple puppet called Randy is now the host of ABC Radio Melbourne’s breakfast slot. Sammy J has swapped evening gigs for 3.30am starts in a bid to bring a touch of comedy to the morning news cycle. “I like the energy of the morning,” says Sammy J. “Having spent years in comedy, I was an ill fit for the late nights and rock’n’roll hours that came with it. I was always the first to leave an after-party. But that said, I don’t think anybody likes the sound of an alarm at 3.30am either.” The father of two who lives in Melbourne’s inner north-east never planned a life on-air, but when the opportunity arose to take over from former hosts Jacinta Parsons and Sami Shah he couldn’t say no.

Wo r d s

“I had a fear going into the job initially because I don’t like to have an opinion on everything, but I have gotten over that over time,” he says. “And it’s not my job to know everything all of the time.” We’ve come to love him for his catchy “first-time caller” radio jingle, how he rolls with the punches when things don’t always go as planned (like the time he tried to get Nationals politician Darren Chester to admit Barnaby Joyce would become leader of the party) and when music promoter Michael Chugg was stonewalling him in a chat about vaccines but was in stitches when Sammy J jabbed him with a joke about the Lord’s Prayer. “Before this job I was an ABC listener as well, so I know what’s it’s like to want to know something,” Sammy J says. “I do take a slightly defensive position as a host and it works for me. I am not an expert at anything really. I’m a comedian, but equally, the job is more than that and it’s not a comedy show. Born Samuel Jonathan McMillan, but affectionately known as Sammy J, the comedian grew up between Mt Eliza and Frankston – scooting between his divorced parents in a situation he describes as working out OK. He remembers heading to Melbourne as a kid to see the Myer Christmas window display and later on the train as a teenager when he joined United Nations Youth Australia and edited its newsletter in 1999-2000. At school, he felt like an outsider, but used comedy to win friends. He admits by the time he got to year 10, he leaned into the powers of comedy and, combined with his self-proclaimed “nerdinesss”, found his schtick.

“Comedy was my saviour at school. It was my escape.”

“Comedy was my saviour at school. It was my escape. I loved watching Lano & Woodley too. My daughters watch it with me now. I could probably recite every line from their shows,” he says. Sammy J has accidentally become the pandemic’s comedian in these times – his regular skits on ABC TV sees him parody Aussie politics, Melbourne lockdowns and the Olympians who went to Tokyo – the humour serving as sweet relief from the daily news grind. He goes that extra mile too. He shaved his chest hair when mimicking an Aussie swimmer in Tokyo, and won us over with his Playschool skit – The Very Hungry Barnaby – showing us how an Eric Carle classic could act as a lesson in climate denial under an Akubra hat. He works with writers James Pender and Chris McDonald for the weekly TV sketches. “We get together on Zoom every Monday morning and try to make each other laugh – there is no formula at all but that’s how the ideas come about,” Sammy J says. “Someone in the Zoom said, ‘What if 2020 made a comeback? What about a funk song?’ and an hour later we had a draft of the song! “Other times, by Wednesday the news has changed so much we’d have to start again and come up with a new idea,” he says. He is proof that hard work pays off, as does a clever sense of humour. From dragging his keyboards up the stairs at the Comic’s Lounge in North Melbourne, to gigs at the Terminus in Clifton Hill to feeling right at home in the alternative comedy scene at Local Laughs in St Kilda East – Sammy has found a way to bring his audience to the airwaves now. “From a showbiz perspective, I firmly believe that it’s more about perseverance than talent,” Sammy J says. “I’m a prime example of that because anybody who saw me at an early career gig would never have thought I would go on to have any form of career. “But I stubbornly persisted and, in the process of wanting to get better, you do get better.” His morning routine doesn’t end with the radio show, though. Once home, he’s been in charge of

“I am ambitious but I don’t ever want that to come at the expense of being a good dad.” homeschooling his two daughters – one in prep (aged 6) and the other in grade 3 (aged 9) – while his wife goes to work. “My wife Hannah works as a doctor in mental health. We do the handover and I try and stay awake for the rest of the day,” he laughs. “In a life pre-COVID, I’d probably be off touring and away from home for a few weeks at a time, so being here every day and night has huge benefits, but it’s not easy either.” Becoming a parent has certainly helped put a new perspective on how much success Sammy J is willing to chase. “I am ambitious but I don’t ever want that to come at the expense of being a good dad,” he says. “I’m grateful for whatever work I have, and it’s not all about me anymore and I’m OK with that. “I am also aware that my time in radio [is limited] and when that’s up may not be up to me, so I am going with it.” But it’s his casual cheekiness that’s winning listeners – many callers speed-dial the show from metro Melbourne, regional Victoria and interstate to have a word with him on-air. “I am a smartass and looking where I can subvert things,” Sammy J says. “I am terrified of upsetting people and that’s not a nice combination because on air I want to be polite and don’t want anyone to feel like I am taking the piss out of them. “I’m constantly treading that line, but willing to test the waters in my chats and see how far I can push it.”  ●

HAILEYBURY

T

hrough the years, the students and staff at Haileybury have tackled some of the performance world’s most demanding musicals. From Jesus Christ Superstar to the colourful and quirky Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Haileybury’s performing arts program is ambitious. Based on the areas of instrumental music, drama, dance and the school’s Pipes & Drums band, the opportunities for students to immerse themselves in the performing arts are diverse. Rod Marshall, head of Haileybury music who will become director of performing arts from next year, says that a significant number of the school’s students choose to take part in individual music lessons, ensembles, bands, dance competitions and the school’s major performances, such as the Haileybury Tattoo. “With the senior students, we’ve had some amazing concerts at Melbourne Recital Centre, performing to a full house of about 900 people. It’s quite something for those students when they become parents themselves, to drive past the Melbourne Recital Centre and tell their own children that, when they were a kid, they played in that venue,” says Marshall. Students get their first taste of the performing arts program in year 2 when every student learns to play the violin, viola, cello or double bass as part of the classroom program. Years 3 and 4 focus on a classroom choral program, and year 5 students take part in a band program and can learn the saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, flute, trombone or percussion for a semester. Many students then continue their music journey with individual tuition. But Marshall says the key to the performance element is encouraging students to showcase what they have learnt in ensembles or concerts and musicals. “Nobody wants to be in an orchestra that never performs to anyone,” he says. “Music connects the musicians on stage with each other, and it connects them to the community and the audience. They learn to collaborate and contribute, and that is a very empowering experience.”

PE R F O R M I N G A R T S

Drama and dance are also strengths of Haileybury. Every second year, the school produces major musicals at each of its campuses in Melbourne that attract a 500-strong audience night after night. Students who go on to study VCE theatre studies, drama or dance regularly achieve some of the best VCE scores in the state. “When producing our musicals, we create as near a professional experience for the students as we can,” says Marshall. The Haileybury Tattoo that alternates with musicals is also an inclusive major performance that showcases the dramatic, musical and dance talents of students of all ages. “The youngest students to the most senior students all make their way across the stage in drama, dance and music. It brings the Haileybury community together,” says Marshall. “The students who are part of the Haileybury dance teams are also highly talented and regularly travel interstate to compete on a national stage.

HAILEYBURY \ 855 Springvale Road, Keysborough ● 9904 6110 ● haileybury.com.au

They have enjoyed a great deal of success.” Students can also participate in performing arts international tours that usually visits Boston, New York and Los Angeles and sees students take part in workshops with artists and visit key venues in those major cities. Students stay with families in host schools and do workshops and performances with their host students. Haileybury places a high priority on its performing arts program with facilities including a 1000-seat venue at the Keysborough campus and plans for a new Performing Arts Centre at the Brighton campus. Marshall says the program embeds key life skills in students, which remain with them long after they leave Haileybury. “Students learn to collaborate, to continue to grow and build confidence. You are jumping on a fascinating journey when you get involved in the performing arts.”  ●  SARAH MARINOS

FEATURE HOUSE ALBERT PARK \ 53 ST VINCENT PLACE 6

Built as a magnificent example of Victorian architecture around 1875, The Elms retains virtually all of its distinctive features – the most prominent being the mansarded prospect tower with its urns, ribbed roof and cast-iron decoration. The home was built by Thomas Guest, who operated a steam biscuit bakery, and this house certainly would have made a statement. It is still considered one of the finest in the St Vincent Place precinct. It has been renovated within the original footprint and the result is sophisticated family living that showcases the best of both eras. The formal living and dining rooms range across the full width of the house with fireplaces at each end and four sets of double doors opening to a covered terrace. Informal living areas, and the kitchen, at the other end of the home, open to a deck with a barbecue and an outdoor fireplace. The kitchen is magnificent and designed for smooth entertaining and easy family meals with a four-metre calacatta marble island bench, Gaggenau appliances, a walk-in pantry and wenge cabinetry. Also on the ground floor is a large home office with library shelves. The first floor, via either the front staircase where a glorious stained glass window graces the turn, or the sculptural black floating staircase at the rear of the house, is the bedroom zone. Two large bedrooms open to the front balcony and the main bedroom has a luxurious marble en suite with shower
