The editor’s desk
The Melbourne Fashion Festival was one of the first major events affected by the pandemic. I recall a flurry of cancellations of much-anticipated runway shows in 2020, when COVID swept in. Retail has struggled, with occasion-dressing becoming as exotic as a commute to the office. It’s a thrill to welcome back the PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival, reigniting our appetite for dressing with joie de vivre. This edition focuses on the must-watch designers – including our cover star, Kudrat Makkar from Melbourne-based label Mastani – whose collections will adorn the sashaying models. ●

Glamour returns
FASHION For a wardrobe update,
C
ity runways are back at the PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival, where front-row schmoozing and street-style peacocking return to the CBD just like the good old days. This year’s runway shows celebrate the best of Australian designers, give First Nations fashion crusaders a chance to lead, and allow emerging designers to preview their new collections.
Kudrat Makkar of Mastani
Anna Huang of Anna Quan Anna Huang, the designer behind the label Anna Quan, is known for tailoring with a twist. This year she adds colourful knitwear to her creamy neutrals, and although she’s known for her functional daywear, she’s moving into occasion wear with the subtlest of tweaks to silhouettes. “I have put more vibrant colours in the collection than I would normally do – and I’m taking more risks,” Huang says. Anna Quan is already stocked internationally at Net-A-Porter and,

until the pandemic, Huang showed her collections in Paris. She’s inspired by street style and looks for a modern reboot. A career high was when Scarlett Johansson wore a signature beige top on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2018; a reminder that simplicity is still hot. “Big runway shows are always about the glitzy and sexy, which is fine, but I create shirts, trousers and simple knits,” Huang says. “It’s an indication that people do want that and I have a place.”
Mastani designer Kudrat Makkar is new to the High Street fashion in Armadale, building a following for her couture. Ethical occasion pieces and glamour merge with her love of traditional artisanal work. She makes her MFF debut this year with a collection that connects back to temples in Mumbai. Flowers used in temples are collected and carefully pressed into silks that turn red roses into hues of purple wonder. “Dressing to feel good is what we do. It is very important that women
who wear my clothes are comfortable, pretty and powerful,” says Makkar, who has her own workshop in India, with no thirdparty makers involved. “The silhouettes are sophisticated; it’s for women who want to be elegant and pay a lot of attention to quality. “They want to know where the product is made and the story behind the label. That’s the crux of my brand and I want people to own these pieces for decades to come and to pass them on.”

Faith Hilda of Faith Jewels in its elements of design beauty and wearability,” Hilda says. “This involves many ideation sketches, mock jewels in wax and then the precious metals and refining the design until I achieve the balance. “My collections are almost always led by a story or philosophy.”
Natasha Gordon makes her runway debut at the David Jones Opening Night Runway Gala with her premium womenswear label Clea, which is now stocked at the department store. The RMIT fashion graduate – who did an internship in London with head designer Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen (Burton was handpicked by Kate Middleton to design her now iconic wedding gown) – emerges with a luxe collection of twin-sets, dresses and knits. Gordon’s is a world ruled by premium wool, alpaca and doublefaced jacquard, and is where femininity meets androgyny. “Clea is all about quality, cut and finish. It’s a dream moment for me to be in David Jones and to take part in this runway,” says Gordon, who launched her label in April last year.
“The brand is a reflection of my distinct appreciation for design that I gained at Alexander McQueen, then as knitwear designer at Fully Fashioned and two years as knitwear designer at Witchery,” she says. This season it’s a neutral palette alongside pops of green, chocolate and mottled marble colours.

Melbourne jewellery designer Faith Hilda is all about bespoke pieces. She designs her collections twice a year. A favourite of actress Olympia Valance, shoe designer Lana Wilkinson and former Harper’s Bazaar editor Kellie Hush, Faith Jewels aligns with the Fashion Festival this year to create a $10,000 bangle – inspired by the Greek word for lighthouse, “faros” – which will go to a lucky MFF winner. The bangle is part of a collection that includes a necklace, earrings and rings made to order in precious metals with diamond accents. Although she won’t have a designated runway show, you’ll spot Hilda’s pieces on many VIP guests during the week, and the official bangle is a coup for the local jeweller. “I take my time to ensure each collection is researched and balanced
Natasha Gordon of Clea
Designer Kit Willow is on a regenerative fashion mission with her label KitX, turning waste into luxury must-haves. The Melbourneborn designer puts science into fashion and is upping the ante with a new impact-measuring system. That means you’ll be able to work out which KitX items were made with the lowest carbon emissions, used the least amount of water and created minimal air pollution. You can head to the Collingwood Yards during MFF to see how the process takes shape and see the waste turn into magnificent fashion garments a second time around. “You can now make informed decisions and be more productive when it comes to purchases,” says Willow, the curator of Future From Waste Lab – a studio for designers to repurpose donated textiles.
Fresh from showing at Milan Fashion Week, Ngali is enjoying its moment in the sun. It’s a great coup for First Nations fashion designer Denni Francisco who lives in Melbourne and collaborates with Kimberley Gija artist Lindsay Malay for her women’s collection. Her clothes pay respect to country – a dreamy landscape of dusky pink, rich blues, deep browns and vibrant ochres help connect the story to its Indigenous past. “I’m all about giving back to community and educating Indigenous children, so the label gives us an opportunity to move into that space and exist beyond fashion,” Francisco says. The MFF collection is titled Nginha, in which comfortable casual is her winning combination. ● PAYPAL MELBOURNE FASHION FESTIVAL \ runs from March 3 to 12. This cellar-door bistro is the perfect entree as you arrive in Coldstream, the gateway to the Yarra Valley. Dominique Portet is known for its simple Mediterranean-inspired fare and cool-climate wines. Ninthgeneration winemaker Dominique
Portet chose the region, 36 kilometres north-east of Melbourne, to develop wines back in 2000. Now the tenth-generation winemaker Ben Portet is at the helm. Here, it’s all about locally sourced produce while al fresco dining provides the best views of the region. ● dominiqueportet.com

Getting around
YARRA YERING \ 4 Briarty Road,
This exhibition features collages, tapestries, a 12-part sculptural installation and a new film by the artist. David Noonan: Only when it’s cloudless runs from March 24 to July 22. Ticket sessions run from 11am to 2pm, and 2pm to 5pm. Book a tour of the museum, designed by architect Allan Powell, and explore the green surrounds via the pathway created by Kate Seddon Landscape Design.
To get here, we climbed behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz S450 – a king of the road. Taking the car for a leisurely drive from Melbourne’s CBD to the Yarra Valley is a smooth-sailing delight. A 3.0-litre turbocharged inline sixcylinder engine means accelerating is seamless. There’s plenty of leg room, and you can request extra (at a price, of course). You can also design the interiors to your preferred taste thanks to Mercedes Designo Manufaktur – think leather stitching and details to make it your signature. The Mercedes S Class is a show pony and you do feel empowered being the centre of attention in this German super-brand.

The oldest winery in the region delivers a contemporary menu and luscious wines in a smart yet informal space. When dining, take in the views of the sculpture pond and gaze out to the blue hills in the distance. You can book an overnight stay (the stylish Homestead can be reserved entirely for up to 10 guests) and indulge in some cellar door tasting, too. Consider a 60-minute tasting flight that features a choice of current releases, a suite of premium small-release wines or a spread of iconic drops. ● yarrayering.com

A golden mile address, Port Phillip Bay as a front garden, the city in full view, and a stunning contemporary design all combine to make this a very fine home indeed. The location offers an unbeatable lifestyle with the Royal Brighton Yacht Club nearby, cafes and restaurants in the neighbourhood and independent schools not far away. Built of concrete, and clad in copper, the home is one of two residences – one on top of the other – and occupies the top floor. It is brilliantly equipped for entertaining. As well as sunset drinks on the balcony off the living area, there is a roof terrace for the exclusive use of No. 27A. Here, the solar and gas-heated pool has a waterfall feature and the spa has a viewing window to the lights of the city. There is a barbecue kitchen, fireplace, dining and relaxation areas, powder room and pool shower. A recreation room, steam sauna, bathroom, storeroom and garage, also for the exclusive use of 27A, are in the basement with a lift to the home’s lobby. The residence’s interior features marble, timber and glass feature in an easy-flow floor plan. Ceilings are three metres high, doors are full height and bespoke floating cabinetry is finely crafted. Contemporary chandeliers and light fittings complement the design perfectly. Living areas, with marble floors, take advantage of the panoramic bay and city views and open to a terrace.
