There are a few parallels that Melbourne’s own singer-songwriter Vance Joy – real name James Keogh – shares with Lady Gaga. In 2015, his hit tune Riptide became the longest-charting song in ARIA history. It sat in the top 100 for at least 107 weeks, beating the 106 weeks of Lady Gaga’s Poker Face. He is such a humble figure that is hard to get your head around just how major his music is in a global context. In this issue, the Murrumbeena boy shares with Jane Rocca the unexpected inspiration behind his lyrics – it seems that even rock stars need their mums. ●

oving from his rental in Northcote to Barcelona, Spain, to be with his longterm girlfriend inspired last year’s hit single Missing Piece, yet James Keogh – who goes by the stage name Vance Joy – admits collaborating with his mother is also his secret weapon for success. “I don’t shy from the fact Mum helps me with some of my lyrics,” says Keogh, who took his stage name from two characters in Peter Carey’s 1981 novel Bliss. “Credit where it’s due.” The 33-year-old, who grew up in Murrumbeena and managed to crack the album charts playing the ukulele with the song Riptide in 2013, often asks his parents for input when it comes to occasional writer’s block. His mother works as a high school English teacher and his father in IT – and both are happy to share their ideas. Missing Piece, which generated more than 50 million streams (adding to Vance Joy’s 3.2 billion streams globally), would have sat as an unfinished demo if it wasn’t for his mother encouraging him to release it last year. It’s a nostalgic ode to relationships lost to FaceTime and Zoom when we couldn’t embrace loved ones during the pandemic. Before Keogh found success as a singersongwriter, he studied a Law/Arts degree at Monash University. In his younger days, he had his eye on Australian rules football, but swapped Saturday afternoon tackles for music, and it’s paying off. Best known for his introspective indie pop, Vance Joy tugs at the heart strings with music fuelled by a dreamy introspection. His 2014 debut Dream Your Life Away peaked at number one on the ARIA charts.

Vance Joy can’t wait for a road more travelled COVER STORY The man behind the global hit Riptide is also finishing
a studio album and reveals his songwriting secret weapon.
The song Mess is Mine features a line penned by his mother, and Fire and the Flood includes words his father shared over a text message. “I have some secret writing partners and sometimes I wish I could set up weekly chats with Mum about songwriting ideas,” Keogh says. “What you might not recognise as good thought can change when someone shares their perspective with you.” He says he fell in love with the art of songwriting as a teenager, influenced by parents who always fussed over lyrics. “That definitely interested me in wanting to write my own songs,” Keogh says. ”Dad would always sing songs in the car and get me to look at lyrics. “Whether it was a Go-Betweens song or a Jimmy Little cover, reading lyrics was part of the process he encouraged in me from a young age.
He managed to get back to Melbourne for Christmas, spent time at Newmarket Studio in North Melbourne to finish up some engineering on potential album tracks and even got to attend a friend’s wedding. The pressure to deliver is real but, unlike the second-album syndrome, Keogh is trying to find the right mood for this third. This is a guy who can sell out Rod Laver Arena and played 50 US tour dates at his peak, and he knows momentum is important to success. “Looking back, I probably felt more pressure after the success of my song Riptide than I ever have felt before, because the success that came with that song meant people wanted more from me that was kind of the same, but different,” Keogh says. “You don’t really know what will work in the end, but you can’t spend too much time dwelling on that either.”
He’s reading The Power of Now by Eckart Tolle, perhaps a sign of his own internal quest. Although touring is what he always wished for – and he will embark on a national tour in September this year, starting in Darwin and ending in Melbourne (with a Gippsland date in the middle) – he’s learned to be more present. “I totally believe many of the life lessons within the book,” Keogh says. “It’s powerful, but for me, it’s just learning how to employ them in your life.” For now, he’s soaking up life in Spain, riding his skateboard like the good old days in Melbourne and finding thrills in the ordinary. He’ll return to the US to do more studio work before a run at the European summer festivals. When back home, he always finds a spot at his favourite cafe. He might be instantly recognisable there in Northcote, but the locals leave him alone.
“I probably felt more pressure after the success of my song ‘Riptide’ than I ever have felt before … people wanted more from me that was kind of the same, but different.” His mother introduced him to literature. “She made me understand books and opened me up to a world of authors. That was formative for me,” Keogh says. He also says he’d love to record harmonies with his sister one day; she plays guitar and sings. When his dad bought him an electric guitar and amp at age 14, Keogh went on a mission, giving himself whiplash learning Nirvana’s grungy hooks and Metallica’s metal mania. When we meet over Zoom, Keogh is working on a new album. His last studio album, Nation of Two, was released in 2018 and the pressure to get his third done before he embarks on a national Australian tour in September is ever-pressing.
Keogh opened for Bob Dylan, toured with Taylor Swift and was asked by Pink to join her European tour. He also signed a five-album deal with Atlantic in America – a dream come true for someone who didn’t anticipate that posting a song to YouTube in 2013 would change his life. That song was Riptide. “Going on the Pink tour was definitely a career highlight; from the vibe of her band to the days off with the touring party in cities I’d never been before,” he says. “I was only doing a half-hour performance before her show but got to enjoy this moment, which really reminded me why I wanted to make a career in music.”
“Nobody knows who I am in Spain and I love that,” Keogh says. “When I’m back home some might recognise me as the guy who wrote Riptide but they don’t make a big deal of it,” he shrugs. “I’m not wearing expensive new sneakers because I made a lot of money from music. It’s just life as usual for me. “I haven’t cashed in just yet,” he adds, laughing. “Life still feels pretty normal.” ● VANCE JOY 2022 TOUR \ October 22, Lardner Park, Gippsland; November 26, Sidney Myer Music Bowl. ● vancejoy.com

FEATURE HOUSE ALBERT PARK \ 11 MADDEN STREET 3
2
Renovated and restored, this two-storey Victorian home is quite unusual in layout and space with expansive living areas, grand proportions and a masterful combination of contemporary style and amenity blended with the iconic features of the 18th century. On the ground floor, a wide entry hall leads to the living room, which has an open fireplace, and windows looking out to the lace-trimmed verandah. The rest of this floor, apart from a powder room, is made up of a family room, dining area and the kitchen. It’s a versatile space. Three sets of double timber doors, almost full height, can be used to close off the living area. Doors are also a feature of the large dining and family area. Here, three sets of arched doors, set within an arch of glazing, open to the rear garden. The kitchen, white with stainless steel Falcon appliances and a built-in coffee machine, has excellent storage and showcase glass-fronted cupboards. The family room also has an open fireplace with an ornate mantel and cast-iron insert. This is a home designed for a cosy winter. In the paved rear garden, a stone structure houses a wonderful open fire and a barbecue. Other features of this appealing area are the plunge pool and the garden shed. Double wooden doors, not too dissimilar to those in the living room, make the shed picturesque and stylish – particularly with Virginia creeper trailing around it. On the first floor, the main bedroom – 8.5 metres in length – is luxuriously spacious. It has an open fireplace, an en suite
