When a couple in Sydney’s northern beaches set out to build their house in less than a year, there was only one logical solution. Turning to ArchiBlox, an Australian company specialising in prefabricated homes (which are made in sections to enable quick assembly), the couple saw their home completed in less than nine months. At 106 square metres, the house is compact but significant for its sustainable construction methods and flexibility. “Prefab homes touch the environment lightly with minimal disturbance of the natural surrounds,” architect and ArchiBlox founder Bill McCorkell says. “We design energy-efficient homes for life, ensuring that areas and rooms can be used for more than one purpose to maximise usage. We design big, rather than build big.” A green roof sits atop the structure, tying the cliff-side property to its magnificent surrounding landscape while reducing stormwater run-off, absorbing sound pollution and clearing the air. “As urban density increases, Australian homes are heating up. A green roof absorbs the sun’s harsh rays, provides insulation to increase the thermal performance of a home, lowers energy bills and increases plant life to encourage biodiversity.” The home is available to rent on Airbnb.

Rumpus ruckus sings in redux
F
orty-four years after they sang their last theme song, The Brady Bunch continues to sum up the idyll of the family home. In the 1970s, no self-respecting family abode was complete without a rumpus room (in Brady land, it took the form of the impressively proportioned basement) and a bright, functional kitchen. A den was an important factor in maintaining parental sanity, while an essential was a backyard big enough for play equipment and a grassy area. The house at 11222 Dilling Street, North Hollywood, still stands as a beacon of family living, yet the intervening decades have wrought inevitable changes. The post-Brady era has seen the rise of the study nook, where the kids can do their homework and search the web under mum and dad’s protective eye. A media room, where the family can gather for big-screen entertainment

The open-plan living trend has brought families closer together only to spark the counter-trend of zoning, in which cosiness is created through making different spaces in an open-plan context. The swimming pool, meanwhile, has maintained its desirability status in Australia, as the nation with the highest per-capita rate of pool ownership in the world.
In short, the wish-list for the ideal family home has held its ground while adding a new-century flavour. According to Kay & Burton agent Nathan Verwoert: “the consistent spaces we are asked for is a great entertaining hub. Families want generous kitchen and informal area for when family, friends and their kids bring friends over from school. A decent backyard for the kids to play in is almost always on the list.” It remains a dream – but is it the common reality? As the plague of trampolines squashed into inner-city front yards attests, the average family is willing to make sacrifices to secure a place to call home within 10 kilometres of the CBD. The director of Essendon-based Frank Dowling Real Estate, Jane Campbell, says there has been a marked increase in buyers
considering downsizing to townhouses and even apartments to remain in their preferred area. “There’s a significant price gap in moving from a small house or apartment to a bigger house for a family. It means families really need to be selective with their must-haves against their wants and in many cases it’s the space they’re forgoing. On the other hand, we’re also seeing that young families are willing to compromise on the house if they are able to get a larger block or a better location – they’ll plan to work on the property to get what they are after later down the track.” Parents weighing up location versus land should heed a research paper by Walk Victoria, which was released late last year. It shows that teens aged 15 to 20 want to live close to the action, in walkable neighbourhoods, with shops and services close by, and quality public transport.
