ith grand old homes, sophisticated shopping, beautiful cafes and brilliant flame trees lining many of the streets, Brisbane’s Ascot has long been considered one of the city’s top prestige suburbs. And despite fierce competition from neighbour Hamilton, and Teneriffe and New Farm upriver, it’s still holding its own with a series of high-end property sales in recent months. “It has some amazing, amazing homes and is certainly the best suburb in Brisbane,” says Ray White Ascot agent Dwight Ferguson, who’s selling our featured five-bedroom, circa-1890

home, Wellington, on Lancaster Road. “It has a lot of character and it’s quiet and tranquil and is a good family area.” And at the Brisbane Racing Club, where preparations for Brisbane’s inaugural Longest Dinner Under the Stars are well under way for April 21, there was never any doubt that its perfect venue would be Ascot’s heritage-listed 1865 Eagle Farm Racecourse, north-east of the city’s CBD. “It’s our first outdoor dining-experience event and Ascot is perfect for it,” says Deb Isaak, the club’s marketing manager.
“It’s a premium suburb with a lovely community atmosphere and a lot of high-end businesses who band together for events.” At the Brisbane North Chamber of Commerce, president Simon Penrose agrees. “Ascot is a very old suburb, still very close to the city, with wonderful views to the city and across to Moreton Bay, with a very rich cultural side,” he says. “There’s also lots of good shopping and wonderful food, and beautiful homes on large blocks.” Those deep blocks are very much what’s helping keep Ascot ahead of the market, believes Patrick McKinnon of agents Coronis Hamilton who brokered a record $11 million off-market sale of a trophy home on Ascot’s Sutherland Avenue last month, the property of Domino’s Pizza boss Don Meij. It had previously exchanged for $8.615 million in 2016. The previous record for a home in the exclusive street had been $10.2 million. “There are so many great properties on deep blocks and, when they come up for sale, they’re selling really well,” says McKinnon. “There’s so

much competition for property and people love those big blocks in what’s such a family area, and, with interest rates staying the same, people are upgrading there.” Many of the buyers are from the local area, but they’re increasingly being joined by prospective purchasers from Sydney and Melbourne, and from overseas. “Brisbane offers such great value, and a lot of people are moving here as it’s more affordable to buy excellent property, and to live there. We’ve sold recently to expats too from Singapore and Hong Kong,” says McKinnon. Recent sales in Ascot include one on Palm Avenue for $8.3 million in February last year, another on Mayfield Street in June 2017 for $7.6 million, and on the same street in July for $5,325,000. In 2016, a six-bedroom house on Sutherland Avenue sold for $8,625,000. And prices are certainly holding up, believes Brisbane director of valuers Herron Todd White David Notley. “Prices in Ascot are at pretty stable levels and obviously peaking at that $11 million sale, with

uch like agreeing to be punched in the face by a professional boxer, driving any super car, from any brand, is intimidating and potentially painful. Piloting any vehicle worth over half a million dollars and with enough power to launch you into space, Elon Musk-style, is always daunting, but the McLaren 720S, quite possibly the fastest machine money can buy in this country, is different. Up to a point, around 100km/h it’s all familiarly frightening, but then the twin turbos that feed the McLaren’s four-litre V8 engine seem to take a breath and decide to treat you like an atom that’s strayed into the Large Hadron Collider. The edges of your vision go grey, your chest fills with what I can only assume is terror, and everything in front of your windscreen – trees, corners, suicidal goannas, the sky – becomes a series of swooshing streaks. This is because the 720S, which makes a huge 537kW of power, really is ridiculously fast, particularly once it’s up and rolling. While its 100km/h dash is impressive, it’s the fact that it
can go from a standing start to 200km/h in just 7.8 seconds that blows the mind. This means that, from 100 to 200km/h, it is tearing through a wall of air. The digital speedometer simply seems to give up at this point, becoming a blur of numbers, all of them large. Be judicious with the throttle, however, and the McLaren can be a surprisingly tame beast to operate. Its combination of Formula Onederived suspension (McLaren is also a British F1 racing team, established by a Kiwi, Bruce McLaren) and aerodynamic features mean it is fanatically stable and copes with broken-road surfaces better than its Italian competitors. This latest and greatest McLaren is nicer and feels more modern inside and, at $515,080 for the Performance model we drove (our car also featured $180,000 worth of options, pushing it close to $700k), it’s also reassuringly expensive. The only downsides are that its looks are not for everyone, its steering is brilliantly sharp but not deeply involving and it sounds, as is the McLaren way, a little bored at times.

For sale Agent: Nick Johnstone Real Estate, Nick Johnstone 0414 276 871 Obviously, owning a McLaren will place your licence in peril, so you’ll need other cars to keep you from temptation (and for those times where you want to carry more than a handbag).
