“Window seats are magical spaces that can instantly make us feel peaceful and calm, whereby a window becomes like a painting one can get lost in.”

YELLOWTRACE

b y DANA TO MIC H U G H E S

Perch-chance to dream

I

’m yet to meet a human being who doesn’t love a good window seat – it’s simply impossible not to. Simply put, window seats are magical spaces that can instantly make us feel peaceful and calm, whereby a window becomes like a painting one can get lost in. The experience can have an almost meditative quality. On the other hand, depending on the context and design, it can feel exciting to sit on the edge of a building – the feelings can shift from calm to dynamic, active and exciting. Well-designed window seats act as a bridge between the interior and exterior. They are the band that unites the two separate and seemingly opposite spaces and merges them into one seamless entity.

8

PR E ST IGE

Dependent on their size and scale, window seats can feel like separate little rooms, or little balconies, or – as some of these examples showcase – they can have an almost cubbyhouse feel … and we all know that cubby houses are like pom-poms, our favourite pair of trackies, or ice-cream. Everyone freaking loves them! Just like a good window seat. Since the dawn of time, architects have been utilising strategically located facade cut-outs in their efforts to capture a variety of well-defined views. Window seats have the ability to take this effect to a whole new level. Belgian architects Graux & Baeyens have employed this strategy to full effect in their House G-S. This 19th-century home is located on Ghent’s Muide waterfront, with a view of the old city harbour docks. Sitting

in this window seat feels just like floating on the water, minus having to get wet. Perfect! Clare Cousins’ St Kilda East House is formed through a series of insertions around an existing period home. The design extends two separate living and sleeping wings, with the living room featuring a crisp, frameless window seat. From the outside, a recycled brick wall is punctured with a modern architectural insertion that becomes the hero of both the facade and the interior of the house. Andrew Maynard doubled the size of an existing Melbourne house by adding a row of skinny gabled buildings, intended to make the home look like a small village rather than a monolithic block. The library features a series of stepped

platforms that double as a multi-level window seat. That’s my idea of heaven. Maayan Zusman’s update of a Tel Aviv apartment saw the designer create a multipurpose window zone that combines the seat with built-in planters and bookshelves, offering a variety of uses. And if Hanna Michelson’s Loft House in Sweden, complete with that all-timber, L-shaped window seat, doesn’t make you feel all warm and fuzzy, you and I are going to have some serious problems getting along. Although something tells me that won’t be happening any time soon, right? One can only hope. Window seats for world peace, I say. yellowtrace.com.au
