From its high-rise apartment blocks to heritage-listed homes, North Sydney’s appeal as a prestige suburb is growing. B y SU E WILLIAM S

t’s become known as a haven for high rise, but North Sydney has also become one of the nation’s top-performing prestige areas, with beautiful heritage homes surviving alongside the myriad new apartment blocks. “North Sydney is certainly a blend of old and new, with heritage-listed homes and historic cottages, as well as big blocks of high rise,” Sydney’s North Shore Historical Society president Gaynor Austen says. “Everyone mingles and works together and, on the whole, it’s become an amazingly eclectic

area and a very desirable place to live.” The new apartments might have been resisted by some, but the upside is that the North Sydney area is home to 70,000 people. That higher density, with 89 per cent of the dwellings being medium-or-high density compared with NSW’s 33 per cent, is bringing a new vibrancy, and appeal, to an area that used to be deathly quiet after everyone went home from work. “That’s absolutely right; I think it used to be known as a dark, tumbleweed kind of place after 5pm,” Belle Property Mosman principal

Tim Foote says. “It’s really improved the lifestyle amenity of the area for both the new arrivals and the long-time prestige market. We achieved one of our best sales months in March since 2014 with $79.7 million in local real estate sold, which largely reflects the higher number of prestige homes being sold, typically from upgraders selling for $8 million and buying for $12 million.” He has one of the best heritage homes in North Sydney as one of his listings, our featured property, the Victorian mansion St Helens, built

The median house price stands at $2.59 million, showing a year-on-year rise of 39.8 per cent, and a five-year increase of 136 per cent, Domain data scientist Dr Nicola Powell reports. “The area has become much more vibrant and North Sydney has so many of the tick points we look for: close to the CBD, connectivity with public transport, work-life balance and will also see the benefits of the coming Sydney Metro. It’s reflecting the nature of a growing city.” North Sydney Mayor Jilly Gibson says the new development has been mostly concentrated in areas that have a minimal impact on older areas to preserve them. “But we’re pleased to have been able to revitalise North Sydney and make it a livelier place with more entertainment that’s beneficial to all its residents, new and older.”

nce they’ve got this whole self-drivingcar thing down, it’s a pretty sure bet that robo butlers will be next on the list for the world’s imagineers. The co-founder of Siri and a former Apple engineer, Adam Cheyer, predicts that we are at the start of “an interface revolution” and that digital assistants will be “the next iPhones”, and just as much a part of our lives. Fortunately, thanks to those cunning Swiss, with their tiddly knives and sharp banks, some people are already buying butlers that can be plugged into the wall. The Refresh Butler, from the charmingly named V-Zug company, looks like a slick fridge, or some kind of teleporter, but it’s designed to sit in your dressing room. Its job is to take your clothes and “refresh” them, by steaming out creases, removing unwanted smells and hitting them with “sustainable photocatalysis”, which sounds exciting on every level. Bruce Cranston, who is a product expert at

Winning Appliances in Sydney, stockists of the Refresh Butler, says this remarkable contraption is truly unique. “I remember I got off a flight and I had a jacket – and I was a smoker back then – that was creased, it smelled of cigarettes, and I put it in the Refresh Butler for two hours and it came out literally as though I’d just got it back from the dry cleaners. “It’s not actually dry cleaning, but it’s going to cut down on the costs of your dry cleaning, probably by as much as 80 per cent. Plus, it also works like a drying room when you go skiing – there’s space for long coats and even a basket for shoes at the bottom.” Of course, even if you do save 80 per cent on your dry-cleaning bills (and happily reduce the multiplication of clothes hangers in your house as a result), it might take a while to amortise the cost of your Refresh Butler, which starts at a hefty $28,999. Still, it’s probably cheaper than the first robo butlers will be.

For sale Agent: McGrath Mosman, Michael Coombs 0424 391 255 The Refresh Butler, which is about the size of a modern fridge, is going to take up a bit of room in a typical wardrobe, which is why you need a house with space to host it. This staggeringly large modern marvel features an oversized retreat with just such a dressing room, and a spa en suite for good measure.
