much of Sydney’s new urban architecture yells, “look at me”. “A lot of Sydney tries too hard, with everyone trying to be louder than everyone else. It’s creating a jarring streetscape.” Rather, Stojanovic looks to design houses employing “simple timeless geometries”. He exploits the best of modern design, which has evolved and transformed over the years. “We look back at modernism and choose the bits that have not disappeared in 50 years,” says Stojanovic, who has honed his skills and drawn inspiration from stints studying and working in New York, Japan, Italy and, of course, Australia. In particular, he points to his interest in
ydney architect Goran Stojanovic doesn’t like to shout. Rather, the director of X. PACE design studio, in Paddington, prefers his high-end modern work – clustered in and around the harbour city’s exclusive eastern suburbs – to speak for him in hushed tones. Look at any of Stojanovic’s luxury residences and, as eye-catching as they are, they’re not in your face – this Queens Avenue triple-decker, in Vaucluse, is typical of his approach. “What I design is intended to be subtle and quiet, for people to live in, to place furniture against it ... a piece of sculpture without screaming,” says Stojanovic, who believes too
natural materials and concrete as well as a design aesthetic that has purity of form and line. “I like the values that come with a plain, white piece of sculpture,” he says. Queens Avenue is just that. From the front, the house presents itself modestly: an elegant white, cantilevered facade, with concrete runway leading to an aircraft-style flight of stairs. The L-shaped house opens on the middle level to magnificent views across Hermit Bay to the lower north shore, Harbour Bridge and the CBD, while maintaining privacy. “The home has been designed to take advantage of the northern light, as well as its western views,” LJ Hooker Double Bay Group’s director, Bill Malouf, says. There’s also a little mid-century modern about the place – beautifully simple and organic with sleek, clean lines and dazzling high-density foam cladding. Sculptural elements add depth – bluestone feature walls, a ceramic-tiled wetedge pool and spiral steel staircase from Italy. Stojanovic also gives priority to functionality. On the lower level, glass doors tuck inside wall cavities, creating a single indoor-outdoor platform. Concrete curtains on the ground floor demarcate living and dining areas, without impeding fluidity and circulation. “I create a background for living,” he says.
