Scooping the cream of style setters

A

s the ultimate gathering place for designers, buyers, trend forecasters, media and design enthusiasts, Milan’s Salone del Mobile and Milan Design Week proved that our collective interest in contemporary design is on the rise, with a record amount of shows and visitors last month. Textured and coloured glass was a recurring theme at the main Furniture Fair, with Glas Italia releasing what was arguably the most coherent collection to come out of the Salone. Standout pieces include coffee tables by Patricia Urquiola and freestanding screens by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec. The Bouroullecs also lent their hand to Wonderglass, for whom they created a sublime collection called Alcova. Hot on the heels of our obsession with marble,

travertine is another natural stone to make a comeback, with some standout pieces being the Lazlo table by Philipp Mainzer for e15, and Australia’s own Henry Wilson’s collection presented at Local Design. Milan-based design agency Studiopepe conceptualised “Club Unseen” – an exclusive members-only club that opened each night, featuring a series of rooms that explored different forms of contemporary living and hospitality. At the heart of the club was the bar – a backlit, custom-geometric screen made from textured glass that turned the “gestures of mixology” into performance art. Each room also demonstrated that ceramic tiles, especially combined with neon lights, can make for the most amazing wall art. Similarly, dirty pastels

mixed with strong accents such as vibrant blue or acid yellow is the hottest colour trend. Milan’s newest design destination – Six Gallery – is in an abandoned monastery in the Navigli neighbourhood. The hybrid retail and hospitality space showcased an original collection of furniture alongside specially sourced vintage pieces. This earthy and textural interior was all about natural materials, made more arresting with a custom-created ceiling installation for the week, containing 38,000 pieces of wheat strands attached by hand. In what was easily the week’s most showstopping spectacle, Hermes launched its latest homewares collection inside La Permanente art museum. The space was transformed with towering pavilions clad in more than 150,000

Left ‘Club Unseen’ by Studiopepe, which the Yellowtrace team visited, was an exclusive space that opened each night and showcased a series of rooms exploring contemporary living and hospitality. The members-only, custom-created venue was housed in six rooms of a former warehouse, which highlighted the performance art of mixology mastery.

handmade Moroccan zellige tiles. Designed by Charlotte Macaux Perelman, the sublime installation shimmered in the most delicate painterly colours. One of the most cherished experiences for me was visiting Villa Borsani, built in 1943 by architect Osvaldo Borsani for his twin brother, with whom he co-founded the Tecno furniture company. Remaining entirely original, Villa Borsani is a testament to the fact that good design never goes out of style. It is mind-boggling how much beauty and talent there is in Milan during Design Week. The tragedy is that one is not able to see – let alone report on – all of it.

Future looms large for invisible TV

A

s our love affair with truly vast televisions grows, it is surely only a matter of time until someone invents screens that are as big as entire walls. Until such time and, perhaps as a first step, Samsung has introduced the next best thing with its new QLED TV, a screen that can pretend it’s a wall. It’s a trick called “ambient mode” and it allows you to take a photo of the wall your huge, new 75-inch (190.5-centimetre) TV is largely obscuring, using a smartphone, and display that picture in a seamless fashion on the telly when it’s “off” (or at least in power-saving mode). Obviously this works best if your snooker-table sized TV (a Q9F 75-incher will set you back $10,499) is mounted on a nice, brick feature wall, creating a look that’s at once fabulously futuristic and disarmingly invisible. Samsung has been trying to make its televisions disappear for some time, by removing the bezel around the edges, for example, but this really takes it to the next level, as Hass Mahdi, head of audio visual at Samsung

Australia, explains. “Australians tell us they want more than just a screen and they want to redefine the role it plays in the home, and because people want bigger and bigger screens ... they want to look at the aesthetics of having a giant, black hole on the wall,” he says. The new QLED range, which uses something called “quantum dots” to make the colours more deep and meaningful, also deals with the other big problem for those obsessed with the size of their units. Samsung knows people are increasingly buying TVs that are, realistically, too big for the rooms they’re in, so rather than pointing out how stupid that is, its new technology is all about reducing the distance from which you can watch a massive screen without feeling overwhelmed. “You can now watch a 75-inch television from just 2.5 metres away, which means a spare bedroom could now become the home theatre you never had,” a beamingly optimistic spokesman explains. It really does add a whole new meaning to thinking big.

One such wall is the beautiful, timber-panel-effect wall in the living/ dining area of this stunning five-bedroom Brighton pile.
