The Muse – a refined apartment project on St Kilda Road – is crowned by a $45 million penthouse. It may come as a surprise to many Melburnians that a residence of that level of splendour exists in our relatively new apartment market. However, apartment living in Melbourne – whether in a penthouse or otherwise – has become increasingly sophisticated, following the lead of the great cities of the world. Attention to detail within The Muse suggests it will be no less than one of our city’s most covetable addresses, and perhaps on the lips of millionaires the world over. ●

The Muse 409 St Kilda Road, Melbourne development on the corner of St Kilda and Toorak roads will pay between $3.2 million and $45 million for an apartment here – some of the homes come with their own pools. Knight Frank’s head of project marketing Michael Robinson says most buyers are trading out of $20 million (or more) properties in Toorak or South Yarra and are seeking a high level of service and care as well as the “next level” in luxurious interiors. Up in the double storey display suite, Melbourne’s charms are on show through the windows. There’s Toorak Road to the east, with Fawkner Park running alongside it. The Shrine of Remembrance sits enigmatically to the north, surrounded by space and greenery. Beyond the Shrine are the city’s skyscrapers, the distinctive flagpole and tower of Government House and the lights of the MCG. Robinson says most buyers already know and love the area. “They like the proximity to transport, the city, parks and the arts,” he says.

Much is within walking distance. The charming Bistro Gitan is metres away, the Tan or Fawkner Park are ideal for a morning stroll, and the Palace Como is the local boutique cinema. Robinson says many retirees or empty nesters dislike leaving their “patch”, so moving only one or two kilometres is appealing. For many of the wealthy purchasers, the level of luxury and care on offer are significant drawcards: a concierge to bring up the shopping or the dry cleaning, high-tech touches such as number-plate recognition to open the gates to the car park, voice control to switch on the TV and the lights or call the lift, all the way up to facial recognition and fingerprint scanning if they choose. Inside the apartments, the emphasis is on the highest-quality natural materials crafted to an exquisite finish. Charlotte Henderson’s interior look, one of three options from three different designers, is set up in the luxurious display suite and is a tactile delight

that draws on marble, suede and timber. Henderson, of BHI, says The Muse’s interior finishes emulate the craftsmanship of luxury car makers from the 1920s and ’30s, using “hand-stitched leather and highly crafted fine metals and timbers”. Standard fittings include silk carpets and herringbone floors in French oak, but buyers can also enjoy extraordinary statement pieces such as
curved dressing tables with removable leatherstitched jewellery boxes. The emphasis is on detail: a wine fridge with shelves edged in marble; a kitchen with a 4.2-metre marble island bench. The struggle for owners of The Muse apartments will be that the interiors are so luxurious they may not want to go outside – but Melbourne life will beckon them from every window. ●

Welcome to paradise DESIGN An eco-friendly artisan marquee with interior
credentials is a slick interpretation of utopia.
ow do you design a showstopper pavilion that only lasts for a week? Japanese luxury car manufacturer Lexus has pulled out all the stops at the spring racing carnival this year, with an edgy, moody three-storey structure that is given the kiss of life by standout works from some of Australia’s most intriguing artisans. The Lexus Design Pavilion, in Flemington’s Birdcage for Melbourne Cup week, is black and minimalist on the outside, but is a sensory feast to match the top cuisine that will be served on the inside. In recent years, sustainability has become a central issue, and companies are moving away from erecting wasteful structures made of poor materials, industrial designer Henry Wilson says. Spurred on by the collaboration with environmental champion Joost Bakker in the past, Lexus will ensure the structure is packed away and re-used for future events.

Wilson says this pavilion was inspired by the Japanese idea of takumi (artisan) craftsmanship. “It’s a constant balance to make something both industrial but also have a handmade approach, and when you achieve that harmony objects really sing,” he says. Influenced by the idea of utopia or paradise, The Big Group worked with top artists to create a perfectly designed interior space. The first level of the pavilion is a gallery offering a sneak preview of the new Lexus LF-1, though all eyes will turn to the striking 2.5-by-2.5-metre horse sculpture by Anna-Wili Highfield, an artist known for her animal portraits. “My work investigates a shared consciousness with animal life, but also an execution of an elemental spirit,” she says. A large staircase leads to level two, where bifold doors open to an expansive balcony softened by greenery. Landscape architect Jack Merlo has introduced lines of Japanese natives – a great

backdrop to the uninterrupted view of the track. The main attraction on the top dining level is the monumental coloured dining tables crafted by Studio Twocan. Sculptor Maddie Sharrock, of Studio Twocan, has moulded two coloured concrete
tables for up to 76 people, one of the largest seated dining spaces created in the Birdcage. Sharrock was trying to emulate natural patterns of the Pilbara, where she is now working. “People will be literally eating off a work of art,” she says. “Knowing that someone will be sitting down in front of my work for a long time, I wanted to make sure they had something interesting to look at and visual cues to lead the eye all over the table.” Making the slabs was tricky because the tabletops would normally weigh a tonne, but by using special methods the hollow tops are under 100kg. Cutting-edge lighting installations by Volker Haug Studio and bespoke furniture curated by Grazia & Co add to the rich textured atmosphere. Large-magnification glass pieces hanging from the ceiling will highlight the floral details of Cecilia Fox’s flower arrangements. Wilson says this year’s line-up of collaborators is strong and the concept is ambitious. “It’s the small details that make this an elevated experience.” ●

T
he broad and supportive sporting culture at Whitefriars College ensured David Morris thrived during his high school years. The aerial skier, Winter Olympian and maths and PE teacher joined the school in year 8 and quickly became part of the cricket and volleyball teams. “I’ve been into sports my whole life. My parents took me skiing when I was three and I did gymnastics for 15 or 16 years. When I later came across aerial skiing, it was a sweet match because I could do flips and knew how to ski,” says Morris. “At Whitefriars I was encouraged to try different sports and I was part of the Associated Catholic Colleges sports program, where we competed against other schools. I was on different sports teams – I tried football but wasn’t one of the big guys and thought I’d get trampled quite quickly! But I was into swimming and diving at school, too.” As well as his passion for sports, Morris also discovered an interest in maths. “I liked maths because it has a definite answer. There is a right or wrong answer and that’s it. I liked science, physics and chemistry, too – things that relate to real life and how things work. I had great respect for my science teacher, Greg Stewart. He’d have a laugh with the class and then he’d say ‘OK, to work’ and everyone would start working. Everyone knew his limit and respected it.” Morris graduated from Whitefriars College in 2002 and decided to become a sports and maths teacher. He studied a bachelor of applied sciences at RMIT but during his third year he was introduced to aerial skiing. His four-year university course turned into a nine-year journey as the sport demanded he trained overseas for 10 months a year. Morris was initially coached by champion Australian aerial skier, Kirstie Marshall, who spotted his potential at his local gymnastics club. She introduced Morris to the Australian team coaches. In 2013 he came first at the World Cup in Ukraine, he won silver at the 2014 Olympic Games in Russia and took third place in the 2017 World Championships. Morris is now coaching Australia’s future medalwinning aerial skiers. “I did my degree one subject
DAVI D M O R R I S
every semester or one a year and juggled sport and study. I got to an Olympics while studying and it was demanding but I graduated in 2011 with first class honours,” says Morris. Morris says he learnt the rewards of hard work and staying focused while at Whitefriars. “I paid attention, asked questions and I learnt who I was, what I was capable of, what I could become and how to go about it. My teachers encouraged me to work hard and to work to my potential and I learnt that if you study hard you get results,” says Morris. Whitefriars also taught the elite athlete the importance and value of asking for help. “I think boys particularly often think they can do it all and they see asking for help as a sign of weakness. I think asking for help is a strength,” Morris says.
“There are always people who will help you and if you want to be better, you need help to achieve your dreams and goals.” Morris has spent the past few months overseas helping to coach the Swiss team. In coming months, he will continue criss-crossing the world to work with some of the globe’s best aerial skiers. The US, Finland, Canada and China are all part of his travels with the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia. “I want to give back. A lot of people have helped me through my life and I want to pass on that knowledge and experience to help the next generation of athletes,” says Morris. “When I know what I want, I try as hard as I can to get it. I never put in a half-effort because I never want to be left wondering ‘what if?’ ” ● SARAH MARINOS

DOULTON 56 \ HOTEL LUXURY WITH FAMILY FLEXIBILITY
O
ffering grandeur and elegance, the Doulton 56 is designed for homebuyers looking for a sophisticated, contemporary home with hotel-style luxury and flexibility for inter-generational living. Presenting a modern take on a traditional look, the Doulton 56 show home in Burwood features the Classique facade with pointed brickwork, window-frame mouldings and a portico. Its impressive proportions continue inside, where the splendour of an ornate curving staircase creates a central statement. Living areas abound, providing plentiful choice for entertaining and relaxation. Downstairs, in addition to a study, there’s a separate rumpus room and a large open-plan family living zone that integrates kitchen, dining and living. There is another living area at the top of the stairs. A ground-level guest bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe, en suite and adjacent study could easily function as separate living quarters for grandparents or an adult child. Upstairs four further bedrooms include a palatial main suite with dual walk-in wardrobes and an en suite with bath and double vanity. Metricon design manager Ricky D’Alesio says the Doulton 56 has been created with the knock-down-new-build customer in mind. “Someone who has found their perfect block and now needs their perfect home.” D’Alesio says the stand-out aspect of the Doulton 56 is that it’s highly customisable. “Customers who build the Doulton 56 enjoy the Signature by Metricon experience that we offer to all of our knock-down-new-build customers, with an opportunity to tailor and personalise their home with the right specialist advice,” he says. ● LIZ MCLACHLAN

A heated pool that cantilevers out into bushland on a bend of the Yarra is a stunning feature of this Templestowe property. The contemporary house, on a long, sloping block of about 1407 square metres, is designed for sophisticated and easy family life. Rooms look out into treetops and the lush native gardens, designed by Sam Cox Landscapes, nestle the home into its semi-rural setting. A large entry, with a study on one side and a retreat or bedroom on the other, leads past the family bathroom and laundry to a north-facing kitchen, dining and living area with fabulous amenity. This light and airy space opens to a huge elevated deck overlooking the pool. Glossy hardwood floors are laid in the living area and the room is flooded with light from the rear glass wall. A slowcombustion wood-burning fire is a snug addition and this is supplemented throughout by hydronic heating. Timber is a feature throughout the house and is used here on the island bench of the sleek white kitchen. Bosch and Miele appliances make this a pleasurable place to cook for the family or entertain, and a well-appointed butler’s pantry with wine cellar adds to the amenity. Pendant lights and a bench-to-ceiling splashback of grey glass underline the designer details that make this home exceptional. The main bedroom sprawls luxuriously down one side the first floor with a large walk-in wardrobe followed by a stylish grey and white en suite with twin basins. The other two bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and the family bathroom has a deep soaker bath and separate shower.
FINAL WORD
The northern end of this floor is a wall of glass with doors to a balcony running the width of the house. The house has hydronic heating, airconditioning and a workshop or storage area in the double garage.

Dr. Tony Stubbs Eye Surgeon Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victorian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.
