You could almost badge this a nostalgia edition, thanks to Ronan Keating, the Irish singer who became doubly famous beyond his hitmaking band Boyzone with the tune When You Say Nothing At All from the Notting Hill movie. Hugh Grant pursued Julia Roberts on-screen to Keating’s soundtrack; as for Keating’s love life, he later became smitten with an Australian, whom he married. The former X Factor and The Voice judge knows Melbourne well. He speaks candidly ahead of the Melbourne leg of his band’s tour, featuring songs we have been making up and breaking up to for 25 years. ●

COVER STORY Pop heart-throb Ronan Keating recalls the ’90s, his love of Melbourne and giving thanks.
In the Zone
T
hey’ve sung with Pavarotti in Italy, were at the top of the charts with the Spice Girls in the ’90s and now, after 25 years together, Irish boy band Boyzone is calling it a day with a world tour that sees them perform in Australia as a group for the first time in their touring history. “I can’t believe we have never played Australia in all the years we have been doing this,” says Ronan Keating, lead singer of the ’90s boy band that sold more than 25 million albums worldwide and was known for their hits Love Me For a Reason, Words, and Father and Son. “It took us two years to work out what we wanted to do with the band. At the end of the day, we know we’re lucky to have had 25 years in the business – bands like ours don’t make that timespan.”
Keating says a world tour – on their terms – is the ultimate final salute, and a way of thanking fans for the memories. “It’s a bonus to be able to write this final chapter ourselves,” says Keating, who has taken a break from morning breakfast radio in London to tour. Their new album Thank You & Goodnight sees them collaborate with Ed Sheeran ((Because Because)) and Because Gary Barlow ((Love Love)) while paying a special tribute to Love the late band member Stephen Gately through the new track I Can Dream. The song itself was found on an original demo recorded by Gately for his solo album in 2002 and was reworked in an ode to the performer who died of an undiagnosed heart condition in 2009 at the age of 33. “We never thought we’d be as successful as we became, but we kept pushing ourselves time and again,” Keating says. “Whether it was when we had our first No.1 single or No.1 album, we kept moving the goal posts after every achievement. From our first magazine cover to being on Top of the Pops, hosting the MTV Awards and winning many accolades, it was a crazy good time.

“To be part of a ’90s pop movement with bands like Take That and the Spice Girls has been a great ride for us all.” Keating, who travels to Australia three times a year with his Australian wife Storm (a former producer on the Australian X-Factor he met in 2010 and started dating a year later) and their one-yearold son Cooper, says he’s a big fan of Melbourne.
“I love the people in Melbourne, I have great memories of being at the Melbourne Cup Carnival,” he says. “There’s not many cities around the world that have the cool factor. [In Melbourne] there’s great coffee shops, Michelin star-rated restaurants in alleyways that you didn’t know existed and a real energy and coolness that is unique compared to anywhere else in the world.” His gruelling tour schedule means there’s less chance to party when he’s in town, if merely for the stamina required for each show. “It’s a two-hour show and we play 23 songs. It’s the biggest thing I have ever done and I am singing every single song,” he says. “I take one hour to warm up, and an hour before that I am in lock down on my own. I drink honey, ginger and lemon teas and sip it slowly to get my voice warmed up. “I can’t party after the show. Once I’m off that stage I go straight to bed. If I lose my voice the show doesn’t happen.” But if there’s one thing Keating would change about his past, it would be to chill out a little. “I took myself very seriously in the ’90s,” the 41-year-old recalls. “As a young kid aged 16, I
wanted to be successful. I wanted the band I was in to be successful and I wanted to be seen as someone you could respect. I worked very hard at that, and because of that I didn’t get to enjoy my time as much as I probably should have. I was probably too serious for my own good. “I have learnt to take everything with a pinch of salt, I don’t take myself too seriously any more. I still have an amazing work ethic, that’s something that will never change.” After the tour, Keating will return to London to be with his family. He also has three children with his first wife Yvonne Connolly – Jack, Missy and Ali – who live in Ireland. “I would rather not be on the road, it’s a gruelling life, but it’s what I do,” he says. “But it’s inevitable I’ll be on the road touring for a long time yet. I have just finished working on my next solo album but, in an ideal world, I would love to sit at home with Storm and Cooper. But after this, I’ll be knuckling down with radio work, some acting and TV work. You have to keep it diverse.” ● BOYZONE: THE FAREWELL TOUR \ Playing Margaret Court Arena, Melbourne, April 3 ● ticketek.com.au

Paris Hilton REALITY TELEVISION TRAILBLAZER
Chef demonstrations on aged care cuisine
ind back to 2003 – the reality television genre was just beginning and Paris Hilton was, believe it or not, a pioneer. She and her best friend Nicole Richie were stars of the one of the first reality TV shows to become a world-wide success, The Simple Life. Leaving ritzy Beverly Hills behind, the show dropped the girls onto a farm for five weeks – and that was pretty much it. Hilton and Richie inspired the likes of Kim Kardashian, who was a friend of Hilton’s and had a regular guest spot on the show. Hilton was the first to use a reality program to build her personal brand, to much success. During her recent Australian visit, Hilton says she was proud of the fact she led the way in the genre, which is now the dominant force on free-to-air Australian television. “It was so much fun to be on that show,” she says. “It’s been so great to see how The Simple Life inspired so many young men and women around the world with new reality shows and to see them build a celebrity brand like we did.
“I feel like I was really the first of my kind, I guess inventing a new celebrity genre. “I love being a pioneer in that area.” The show again has a cult following, and Hilton doesn’t mind watching it back, and loves the fact it is finding a new audience. “It’s such an iconic show, and so timeless,” she says. “Now teenagers and kids are watching the show and posting memes, and it makes me so happy to see that.” Once the show aired around the world, Hilton’s popularity exploded and she famously made a trip to Australia to attend the Melbourne Cup in 2003. Many in the TV industry at the time thought the show and the reality genre was a one-hit wonder; how wrong they were. They also thought Hilton would fade away – a flash in the pan – but the critics didn’t realise she has a phenomenal work ethic and ambition. “I don’t stop, I haven’t been on a vacation for I don’t know how long,” she says. Hilton was recently in Melbourne to launch her latest fragrance Platinum Rush. ●

HEALTHY APPLE
Should you buy, should you sell or just wait? If you are like most people who may be thinking of selling or buying, you’re probably wondering what’s the right thing to do in the current market? Should you sell, should you buy or should you wait? The negative portrayal of the property market by the mainstream media with headlines of a market crash has scared many buyers. Surely after a near doubling of prices since 2012 a slowdown and a correction in prices is normal. The long term fundamentals for our economy are still strong and a total collapse of property prices is highly unlikely. The market is still full of people who genuinely want to buy and sell. The question is – at what price? Properties that are attractively priced get noticed. Sellers who are slow to come to terms with the reality of the current market are overpriced and overlooked by buyers. Buyers are always looking for value. Irrespective of the market, they want the best property available at the best price. It’s ironic that not long ago when it was a sellers’ market and prices were rising,
it was a difficult time to buy at good value and yet buyers were buying like there was no tomorrow. Buyers were afraid of missing out. Now that the market has changed to a buyers’ market, fear of paying too much has creeped in. When they should have been afraid of paying too much they weren’t and now when they can buy at much better value they are afraid. This is the typical herd mentality and these are the times when smart buyers detach themselves from the herd and pick up great deals. “...these are the times when smart buyers detach themselves from the herd and pick up great deals.” The mentality by some buyers that they can time the market and find a better deal later causes many to miss out on some great opportunities that are only possible in uncertain changing market environments such as the one we are in now. No one knows the bottom until prices are already headed up and then everyone who was waiting scrambles to buy, pushing prices even higher. The real question buyers should be asking is “if prices have already dropped, is it safe to buy now?”

ASHBURTON 35 \ AFFORDABLE HAMPTONS ELEGANCE
I
n the glitzy world of show homes where each new home can seem more voluminous and opulent than the last, the Ashburton 35 is a breath of fresh (sea) air. Like all Carter Grange homes, it’s been custom designed for an individual client’s family and their block, in this case a smaller corner site under 500 square metres that doesn’t fit standard plans by project builders. Carter Grange head of sales and marketing Vince Bellier says the double-storey design not only realises this client’s vision for a luxury contemporary home with a Hamptons feel but, at $624,162, it won’t break the bank. “It’s a 35-square home that feels so much larger with all the features of much bigger homes – four large bedrooms, two living zones, a spacious main suite, a large study, butler’s pantry and seamlessly integrated indoor-outdoor living.” As with all Carter Grange homes it has an effortless and convenient flow – the garage connects to living through the laundry, butler’s pantry and kitchen with a powder room nearby. Upstairs the family bathroom has a twin vanity and separate powder room – a smart solution for family living. Outside, the Hamptons-inspired brick-and-timber facade features bay windows, and a porch with brick piers. Inside, Carter Grange’s interior arm, Byron Interiors, has translated the client’s aspirations into a subtle palette of coastal tones and features. These include wide French oak floorboards, a blue grey vertical timbered feature wall and a light, fresh kitchen with marbled splashback and white stone benchtops. Hydronic heating, double glazing, two sets of triple stacker doors and a fullyfitted barbecue area are all included. ● LIZ McLACHLAN

EDUCATION & INNOVATION
Me & My Mentor
B RONTE SHERWEN & DALE HUNTER
Y
ear 12 student Bronte Sherwen and technologies learning leader Dale Hunter have developed an enjoyable working relationship while exploring health and human development and food studies. Dale is in her 11th year at Our Lady of Sion College and oversees the technologies curriculum, which includes food studies, digital technologies and textiles. Dale began teaching Bronte last year and was impressed by the 17-yearold’s enthusiasm to learn.
NORM OORLOFF
BRONTE SAYS ... I joined Our Lady of Sion College in year 7 and I’ve had some memorable experiences. In year 9 I loved our City Experience program, when we explored Melbourne, and the following year I did work experience at Melbourne Zoo. I’m interested in animal conservation and I worked with one of the zoo’s animal welfare experts, who was involved in developing a new animal enclosure. This year a highlight is being a Carmel house leader. I remember being in year 7, looking at the Carmel house leaders and wanting to be a captain myself one day. As one of the student leaders now, it’s part of my role to get the whole house involved in events, like the swimming and athletics carnivals. Year 12 is an important year for me, but I’ve picked VCE subjects that I enjoy including health and human development, food studies, further maths, English and PE. I was excited to have Ms Hunter as my health and human eevelopment teacher because she was my older sister’s homeroom teacher a few years ago. My sister said Ms Hunter always helped make a positive start to the day. I knew from my first class with her that I was going to learn a lot. She never just teaches from a textbook but encourages us to discuss issues and ensures everyone has input into class conversations. One thing that stands out for me is that Ms Hunter encourages everyone to try their best and to keep improving. When she returns our marked work, she highlights where we’ve made improvements and how we could do even better next time. Last year, before my year 11 exams, I remember feeling a bit frazzled but any time we did revision with Ms Hunter, I felt more relaxed. I left each class feeling ready for my exams and I
DA L E H U N T E R & B R O N T E S H E RW E N
know her advice to keep trying and to keep improving will stay with me long after I leave school.
DALE SAYS ... After high school, I started a science degree, but straight science wasn’t really for me. So, I transferred to a bachelor of education, majoring in home economics and biology because I was interested in a career in nutrition. But my father encouraged me to try teaching, just for a year, and I loved it. I enjoy working with staff and students, hearing different viewpoints and knowing that, when I teach, every day is different. I was at a co-ed school when the opportunity came up to teach health and human development at Our Lady of Sion. Now, as well as leading technologies subjects, I teach VCE health and human development and food studies. It’s part of my role to make sure the curriculum adheres to VCE standards and I work closely with staff in developing their skills, too. But the contact with
students, like Bronte, is my absolute passion. I had an inspirational English teacher at high school who based his teaching on building relationships with his students and gaining trust – I work on that same basis. Once the girls trust me, I know they will take risks with their learning, ask questions and get engaged in class activities and that’s how they learn. I met Bronte last year and she immediately struck me as an outgoing, effervescent student. She sat at the front of the class and was very engaged. I felt that I built strong relationships with Bronte and her classmates last year and that continues. We have spent a lot of time discussing topics the girls were interested in and we’ve learned a lot together. Year 12 can become a little stressful and I defuse that by reminding Bronte and my other students how much they’ve improved with their studies. It’s not just about the mark at the end. If the girls focus on improvement that builds their self-confidence and their sense of capability, then they’re ready to move out into the world. ● SARAH MARINOS
