Sam Kerr is one the best footballers in the world, occupying a place in fans’ imaginations alongside players like Tim Cahill and Harry Kewell. She plays here and in the US and Australian soccer lovers have the opportunity to watch her take flight in the green and gold in France when the Matildas contest the FIFA Women’s World Cup. In this week’s cover feature, accomplished sports journalist Peter Hanlon charts Kerr’s rise to the top of her sport through the memories and reflections of those who have known her since she was knee-high to a round ball. ●

FIRST PERSON
““I am Richard T Phan ” … and I dress barristers and judges I was a bad student – it took me two goes to finish year 12 – but I was disposed to retail quite early in my working life. My first retail job was when I was 15. It was work experience at a boutique retailer in Footscray and I realised how good it was to have money in my pocket. I left home when I was 15, so I went out on my own early. Eventually, I got a job at Georges. From there, I went to Harrolds and then I was picked up by Ludlows. That was 21 years ago now. I worked at Ludlows as an employee for 12 years before buying the business from the owners. My experience in fashion before legal regalia led me to conclusion that it was a fickle market and the opportunity to move into legal wear struck me as unique. We are the only dedicated legal-wear retailer in Australia. We supply legal regalia for advocates – essentially, the jackets, robes and wigs – [and] we supply courts nationwide and internationally. We not only make the robes, we design them, sometimes in partnership with Australian courts. For example, when the Supreme Court of Victoria abolished barristers’ wigs, it became necessary to change the robes. The robes they were wearing at the time were designed to be paired with a wig, and when you took the wig away it was quite a peculiar outfit. So, they engaged us to redesign their robes. Product development is a fun part of the job for me. No two orders are identical – almost every order is customised and the options are almost limitless. We ascertain what our customers are after very quickly. Some customers want more braiding or buttons, or buttons that are covered with velvet instead of another cloth, or shiny buttons, or maybe extra pockets. It’s also subject to the individual and about what they can carry off. You can’t have a young barrister in an ostentatious jacket, whereas a senior barrister can demand that. It’s also a great leveller. Say two people go to court – if one is wearing a $2000 suit and the other is wearing a $400 suit the perception is that the one in the more expensive suit will perform better. Legal regalia levels that playing field. ● ● ludlows.com.au

COVER STORY
Stronger and better than ever entering the World Cup, Matildas sensation Sam Kerr is rewriting record books.
A
s expressions of sporting exultation go, it has an inevitability to rival the famous Usain “Lightning” Bolt victory salute. Watch Sam Kerr play soccer, and there’s a good chance you’ll see her take flight. For Australian Sports Commission boss Kate Palmer, it’s the go-to moment that has her beaming when she’s asked if we’ve arrived at a golden era for women in sport. “When the Matildas play, you expect them to win, you expect Sam to score, you expect her to do a backflip in celebration,” Palmer says. “How fabulous.” For Mano Psanoudakis, Kerr’s first coach with Western Knights in Perth, it’s validation – on high rotation – of the vow he made at each season’s presentation night, as he routinely handed one of the two girls in his junior boys’ team the champion player trophy. “Every year I’d say to the whole club, ‘One day, you’re all going to be watching Sam on television – she’s going to play for Australia’,” Psanoudakis says. “To see her backflip after scoring, gosh, I feel proud that I knew her.”
naturals for whom foot and ball can seem attached by Velcro. What she had was an athleticism, rawness of speed and ability to read the game that made onlookers gasp. “She would stay out of the contest then come running through, take it and go. She could steal it on the run at full speed, that was her talent.” His son Nick played midfield, Kerr up front as striker. The Knights’ game plan was simple. “The team strategy was just ‘kick it long to Sam, she’s faster than everyone’,” Nick Psanoudakis says. “And it worked.” Kerr’s dad, Roger, was born in Calcutta to an English father and basketball-playing Indian mother; her mum, Roxanne, is a former high-level netballer with plenty of AFL in her family tree – as well as an uncle, jockey John Miller, who rode Galilee to victory in the 1966 Melbourne Cup. Kerr’s brother Daniel is a 220-game West Coast premiership player who was a regular at his sister’s junior soccer games, as she zipped about wearing his No.4 jersey. Sam’s contribution to the family’s sporting story will trump all if she orchestrates a

fairy tale at this year’s World Cup in France, which for Australia starts against Italy in Valenciennes on June 9. Buoyed by consistent results over the past two years, the Matildas fear no opponent on the world stage. It’s no coincidence this period has seen the realisation of Kerr’s huge potential. “It was a little bit of her falling in love with the game, to go and practise more, do some of the individual things she needed to do,” van Egmond says of her blossoming, conscious of what Kerr has often admitted – that initially, she didn’t like soccer. Since 2011, she’s lived a global footballer’s whirlwind – half the year at home playing W-League for Perth Glory, the rest in the US, where she’s now with Chicago Red Stars and is the national competition’s all-time greatest goal scorer. Van Egmond (who remembers the young Kerr not as reserved, but “cheeky as hell”) says a light-bulb

Emily van Egmond’s career has run in tandem with Kerr’s; both are 25 and long-time members of the national team. As a Matildas’ assistant, Emily’s father Gary could be excused a coach’s professional detachment when it comes to Kerr’s feats. No chance. “I’ve seen the journey, and I’m over the moon – not just from the footballing perspective, but the person she’s turned into,” Gary van Egmond says. “She’s a credit to herself, to her family, and everyone along the way who’s helped and guided her.” If the current landscape had arrived 15 years earlier, Sam Kerr would never have played soccer, let alone become Australian captain. She was “all AFL”, and only took a round-ball diversion at 12 when playing with the boys was no longer feasible. Psanoudakis remembers a youngster who rarely spoke, and who at first didn’t boast the touch of the

moment came during her stint with Western New York Flash, alongside legendary American striker Abby Wambach, who inspired her to work harder. Kerr has said of Wambach: “[She] just changed my view on when I leave football what I want people to remember me for.” She’s known an athlete’s hardship – a knee reconstruction in her teens and, in 2015, a foot fracture that sidelined her for six months. She’s emerged stronger, better – and happier.
T
his year Kerr reportedly became the first Australian female footballer to earn $1 million in a year, and trumped a host of sponsored male athletes by becoming the face of Nike Australia. In a mini-documentary produced by the sporting behemoth – Sam Kerr: Birthplace of Dreams – Kerr talks about finding love with Perth and Chicago teammate Nikki Stanton, a Seattle native. The couple laugh about Kerr being snapped out of the doldrums as doctors feared the foot injury would end her playing days. Kerr says she “had a breakdown” in a shopping centre, recalling Stanton telling her firmly, “You need to pull it together.” Kerr credits Stanton with helping her reach fulfilment. “It’s really nice to have someone in your life who challenges you to be the best you. That’s been a really big part of the change in my career – is her being herself, she’s just a safe place for me.” ASC chief Palmer is revelling in the bigger picture. She knows the likes of Kerr, Ellyse Perry, Ash Barty and Steph Gilmore – global figures all – are changing the landscape for young girls, forever. To that notion of being in a golden age for women’s sport, she happily says: no, that’s yet to come. “You have a choice now – how great is that?” she declares. “Every single little girl out there can have a choice, and can be recognised for the amazing athletes they truly are.” Having made her choice and embraced it, Kerr is shooting for the stars. Asked in Birthplace of Dreams what might happen if she scores the winning goal in the World Cup final, she pauses, thinks, visualises. Then she answers with a winning smile: “Backflip!” ●

FOOD Marco Pierre White: style and substance. Wo r d s

ith every ring of the phone my heart rate increases. I’m calling Marco Pierre White at 10.30pm London time. He was the first celebrity chef, the first Brit to win three Michelin stars and he made Gordon Ramsay cry, so I am wondering how a journalist calling at bedtime will fare. “Hello you,” says a cool English voice, “how are you?” Today you’re more likely to see White on television than in a kitchen, but he has more than 35 restaurants across the United Kingdom under five different brands. Right now he’s in Melbourne for

Good Food Month, where he joins Phil Wood from Point Leo Estate for a dinner on June 5, Andrew McConnell for a Sunday lunch on June 9, and is mentoring the Young Chefs’ Lunch. When I ask if there’s still a place for toughness in the kitchen, he doesn’t exactly say no. “You have to remember that chefs scream orders so people hear those orders. When I was cooking I had 30 chefs in my kitchen. I can’t just take an order and say, ‘In your own time boys and girls, could I have two salads of crab and one beef.’ It doesn’t work like that,” he says. “Service is service; it’s not personal.” Despite his currency, White has a tendency to start his considered sentences with “When I was a young man” – an indicator of how the industry has changed. When he started cooking being a

the customer always being right. But it’s not about ego; it’s about respecting others. “Rudeness is not correct, is it? They don’t have the right to be rude to staff, what they should do is speak with the manager,” he says. If you ever find yourself across the table from White, make sure it’s not at a degustation. And if you wait on him, for the love of England, don’t ask if he’s enjoying his meal two minutes after it’s served. “I don’t want to be told what I’m going to eat. I don’t want a set menu and tiny little plates of food. If you ask your friends, ‘What’s your favourite restaurant?’ none of them will say Michelin-starred restaurants, or three-hatted restaurants, in your case.” According to White the best restaurants have a comfortable

chef was a job. Now it’s a passion to be followed. “I think what’s interesting with young chefs is that they’re more inquisitive than my generation … they’re more interested in food and they want to push the boundaries and express themselves more. They’re refining and making food more exciting,” he says. I suggest his own inquisitiveness could be responsible for his success. “Well, I’m just naturally inquisitive, that’s my problem,” he says. When I tell him he should have been a journalist, he admits his dyslexia would have made that impossible but points out similarities: cooks deliver food of a certain standard within a certain time frame, journalists deliver stories to a deadline. Both are yelled at. With a reputation for yelling himself, White refutes the notion of

environment and uncomplicated service delivered to a high standard at a good price point. “Feed people and give them something that’s real rather than something that is visually attractive but has no substance. The restaurants I mentioned [see ‘Marco Pierre White’s Melbourne], they feed you at a good price point and that’s the future. They’re the trendsetters,” he says. ●

Eye of the social media storm T H E R E VI E W

en Elton, the man who gave the world The Young Ones and Blackadder Blackadder, has found a fresh comic target in the form of the outrage chamber that is social media. Old-school London detective Mick Matlock is investigating a series of suspicious murders in the build-up to a referendum on whether England should leave the United Kingdom (Brexit is but a bad memory). All the victims had engaged in some form of identity politics and poor Matlock finds himself battling the “PC Fun Police” as he tries desperately not to offend hyper-sensitive interest groups and permanently furious tweeters. The book begins with Matlock being hauled over the coals for some unintentional victim-blaming. “Why did everything have to be so tricky?” is his
constant lament. The detective has to navigate his way through a verbal minefield, where one misplaced word could mean career death. Elton cleverly builds a suspenseful thriller laced with so many delicious real-world scenarios. There are the eerily familiar Brexit-style hostilities (“a battle between latte-sipping snowflakes and commonsense patriots”); a succession of #MeToo scandals; and an all-too-realistic sub-plot involving Russian meddling in British politics.

Heritage-recognised Glenlee is one of Moonee Ponds’ most noteworthy properties. Built in 1903, the house is of historic significance due to its Queen Anne architecture which is of “special value” according to the Victorian Heritage Database. Moonee Ponds locals are no doubt familiar with the home’s stunning white facade. Indoors, the property has been renovated by Bagnato Architects to showcase fivestar features among a mix of original and contemporary interiors. Particular attention has been paid to the materials and fittings evidenced in the home’s marble bathrooms and the inclusion of dramatic custom-designed lighting. When entering the home, American oak parquetry floors lie beneath soaring ceilings with decorative roses. A bespoke lighting installation by Glowing Structures in the nearby void drapes down two storeys. Rooms on the ground level include a formal lounge and library with period fireplaces. A sitting and dining room is adorned with a black stone fireplace and crystal chandelier. The renovated north-facing living, kitchen and dining area features a combination of period and contemporary features. Dark soft-close cabinetry contrasts against white Calacatta marble benches in the kitchen, which also features Gaggenau appliances and an integrated Liebherr refrigerator and dishwasher. All bedrooms and a large walk-in linen press are on the home’s second storey including the main bedroom with a fully marble en suite.
