What is a ritual? This may seem like a simple question, but one must look back to understand the meaning. A ritual is believed to be an act or process of great importance and value. Rituals were not done everyday, but rather monthly or even yearly. By definition, It it something that was supposed to be looked forward to and valued, appreciated. This allowed time for the build up and then the experience of the ritual was more meaningful. It is not only important for us to experience the rite of ritual, but invaluable to our ever growing existence.

Constantinople
450AD - 1453AD
Establishment of the “Mese” or road to Rome. This historical road established the imperial road that starts at the Forum Augustaion, right at the foot of Hagia Sophia, then leads to the Golden Gate, then further Rome. Another part of the Mese is the Forums that are placed in various locations. These are the heart of commerce and information in Constantinople. People would congregate here to gather information or use for trade or commerce.
Ottoman Empire
1453AD - 1923
After the switch from Byzantine to Ottoman, Many modes of transportation have been effected. The Mese, that was once the most important mode of transportation, is now unimportant. This city now focuses on Mosques and their surrounding complexes or kulliyes. The communities are radially based off of this pattern. Focus is put on the Mosque, as the important cornerstones of the community. This isn’t only where people would pray but where they get information on current events and or exchange/share information.

Turkish Republic/Istanbul
1923 - Present
Advancement of roadways and the highway system has begun to shape the current trend of Turkey. The ever growing city now has to adapt to the changing of technology and how people get around. The once sacred Mese is now called the Divanyolu Avenue, a major roadway that cuts through the city allowing for more transportation through. The water’s edge is now retrofitted with a coastal highway or Kennedy boulevard, to connect the southern shore to the perimeter of the peninsula and both bridges. The Ataturk Boulevard is created to connect north and south shores. This is a clear line that separates Fatih and Eminonu Districts.
Future Istanbul
2013 - 2030
Development of the Marmaray has been underway for the city of Istanbul for the past couple of years. When finished, this underwater tunnel will connect the two sides of Istanbul, European and Asian, with the continuation of the Metro Rail System. An additional bridge is being built alongside the Ataturk and Galata bridges in the Golden horn to connect the railway from Taksim to Yeni Kapi station. These connections will allow for more visitors to come into the Historical peninsula each day. This will lesson the need for car and bus travel in these areas
