Foreword
Part 2 Gensler Firth Architects
The role of the Architect We live in a world of changing times where the production of space is intertwined with many visible and invisible networks. There is a shift that needs to see the architect move from the ties of the building linked to production of commodities to one where they recognise the networks architecture sits within and create a framework that recognises the broader context. This context acknowledges the social, global, ecological and virtual networks. This portfolio represents the progression of my design thinking throughout my experience in my architectural profession, a time of forever changing opinions, views and growth in knowledge. The projects chosen represent key avenues of exploration that have defined my outlook on architecture today.

Firth Architects Architectural Assistant (RIBA part 2) Lytham September 2018 - August 2019 Bradkirk Barn The design for this property is the re-use of an existing barn that retains its existing form to create a dwelling that is reflective of the rural site. The minimalist approach to the design will enhance the immediate setting and remain sensitive the defining characteristics of the local area. I worked on this project from the initial design and developed it for a planning submission. The design for this project that is based on the reuse of the existing form and structure to create a dwelling that made use of the available space. Using survey information, a 3D model and sectional drawings i was able to develop a design that made innovative use of the space without any need for major alteration. Alongside this we co ordinated the reports required including an acoustic, heritage, structural and ecological survey. It was important to understand the local policy as this project is in a countryside area in the periphery of a grade II listed building.

This is a proposal for new local occupancy dwelling within the Lake District National Park in Windermere. The site is currently undeveloped with a woodland area. The intention of the proposal is to build a property that is inspired by the surrounding natural environment, uses innovative design to create inclusive access and materials that reflect the local character of area.
-
Description -
N
The project was for a client that wanted to acquire planning permission on their site to sell. My role on this project stemmed across the pre planning and planning phase. Working with the design team in the office we developed a sketch scheme for the existing site to understand what the local planning authority would require for planning. Following this we used the feedback to develop the proposal through CAD and visuals alongside required reports for a strong planning application.

Firth Architects Architectural Assistant (RIBA part 2) Lytham September 2018 - August 2019 Sunday School The design for this property is the re-use of a grade II listed existing church building that retains the main features of the existing building with the addition of a rear extension to create a dwelling that is reflective of the existing conservation site. I worked on this project after the original client had sold the property to a new owner. The new owner then became our client we developed a design for them up to planning stage. My role was to work with the client to incorporate their design ideas in a way that considered the context of the future property whilst creating an exception home. The listed status of the building meant that a sensitive and innovative approach was required using 3D modeling to help illustrate the design to client. A thorough design and access statement and relevant reports were all required to support this application. Being involved in meetings with the design team allowed us to develop a design that would meet everyones requirements early on. With such a contentious project it was important to ensure that no further changes would be required following the granting of planning permission.

Firth Architects Architectural Assistant (RIBA part 2) Lytham September 2018 - August 2019 Firtree Barn The proposal for this property is the refurbishment and extension of an existing two storey rendered property on Ballam Road with the intention to create a modern country house that responds to the site and is reflective of the rural context. In this project our aim was to create a futuristic building that maintained the aesthetic of the rural context. We incorporated sustainable technologies and modern materials to create a proposal that aimed to create a precedent for future projects in the area. I worked on this project from the initial concept and used a combination of sketch and 3D models to create options for the client. Working with the local policy we created a proposal that addressed key principles in the design. I submitted the pre application enquiry and we worked in the office to incorporate this information into the planning proposal.

Gensler Architectural Assistant (RIBA part 2) London July 2016 - September 2016
Design experience I chose to apply for a summer internship at Gensler following use of their research on office design in my final project for the first year of masters in Manchester. The office in London had over 250 employees with professionals in graphic, interior, urban and architectural design. I was fortunate enough to work on a number of different projects varying in scale and type from temporary pop ups using shipping containers to master plans for large areas of London. This valuable experience showed me the methods that a large scale organisations use to co ordinate multiple teams across large projects and also to create a highly desirable workplace. Gensler are at the forefront of new technologies and i was able to developments in VR, Microsoft hololens and other technologies that are changing the way designs and clients interact and work together.
Wilson Mason Architectural Assistant (RIBA part 1) Samlesbury June 2014 - June 2015
Coupland 3 Coupland 3 is a Grade II listed Manchester University building. The building will be the School of Law, the School of Dentistry and the Faculty of Humanities. I worked on this project for one year at Wilson Mason and worked with the design team to develop and co ordinate layouts, M and E services, structural and technical details throughout the project. I saw this project through from early stages to elements on site.

Key tasks included creating 3d models of spaces, co ordinating mechanical and electrical services, creating door and window schedules, drawing room data sheets, contacting and holding meetings with suppliers and developing technical details.
A
Dealing with the existing building meant that the information required to complete the drawings was fed through as the strip out phases took place and therefore careful considerations and multiple options were required for different elements of the design were required.
