a man who has gotten us out of a jam or three here at the Post, when we run into computer problems is Neil Murphy of Active Computer Repair. Neil not only repairs computers but also supplies new computers while also doing upgrades, installations, internet and security. Neil comes with our recommendation and you can give him a call on 087-7570674. Congratulations to Billy O’Callaghan who last week launched his 4th book ‘In Too Deep’ at the South County in Douglas. Billy is a multi award winning writer and no doubt there are many many more books on the way. In Too Deep is published by Mercier Press and would make an ideal Father’s Day gift. On the subject of Father’s Day as you can see on our cover this week there is a barrow full of prizes to be won in the Douglas Village Shopping Centre Fathers Day - Game, Set and Match competition. For more details visit Douglas Village Shopping Centre.

Early morning is my favourite time of the day especially when the sun rises at the beginning of a beautiful day like the ones we’ve been having recently. The Grimm Rocker

By Aoife James

Tel: 021 429 4844

(Aoife is a member of the Douglas Jumior Writers Group) The Grimm Rocker lived in the land of the Underground Rhythm. He played his guitar a lot. It was his favourite thing to do. Oh, and did I forget to tell you that he's a skeleton? Well you might have figured it out already since his name is Grimm Rocker. Grimm's best friends were Dead Drums, Harmony Humorous and Bass Bones. I say by their names you can guess what instruments they played. Grimm, Dead, Harmony and Bass were in a band called "Dead Beat". They were occasionally asked to play for parties. They would sometimes write their own songs, but most of the time they would copy other bands like Guns n' Roses or Metallica. A lot goes on in the land of the Underground Rhythm, including concerts and parties. Grimm and his friends sometimes played at these events, everyone loved their music. Dead Beat had just finished playing at a party for Harmony's cousin. "Guys, that party was awesome I They loved us," Grimm said to his friends. "Of course they loved us. A majority of them were my relatives," Harmony said back. "But the rest of them weren't your relatives and they loved us," said Bass. "Oh, would you just forget about it," said Harmony. "So what do we do after this?" she asked. Grimm thought about what they could do. "Well we could go back to my house and watch a movie," he suggested.

"Well that would be a good idea. Maybe we could stop at the Skeleton Store on our way there to get some snacks," Base said. "So what movie will we watch?" When everyone got back to Grimm's house they watched a movie that they rented on their way back. Then Grimm got a mysterious call from someone. "Hello," said Grimm. "Who is this?" "The name's Rock. I'm master of guitar battles. I've been looking for a worthy opponent, and people have said that you're good. How would you feel about challenging me?" Grimm didn't know what to say. "It would be an honour. Where and when?" "You can meet me at the Performance Platform at 2:30 on Friday. Bring an audience if you want. Oh, and there's another condition that I forgot to tell you about. You see, if you lose you will be robbed of your guitar playing abilities. See you on Friday," and then Rock hung up.

ages for Rock. He was more bored then he was the time he had to see the Fiddlin' Fibula with his mum, and trust me that was boring. After a long while of waiting, Grimm saw him. He was a tall skeleton wearing a black trousers and waist-coat and a tall top hat. Grimm knew straight away that he was Rock. "Hello Grimm. Are you ready for our battle?" Rock asked with an evil smirk spreading across his face. Grimm looked nervous. "Well, I think I'm ready but ... " "Well splendid then. Shall we start?" And then the battle started. They each had to pick a song, and then the person with the loudest applause wins. Rock was the first to perform. When he was finished he got a good applause. And now it was Grimm's turn. He was really nervous. He was too scared that he might lose his guitar playing abilities. He looked out at all his friends and family. Then he looked at Rock. ''Today,'' Rock said. So Grimm started playing. When he was done he got a huge applause from his friends and family and even Rock's supporters. And so Grimm had won. Rock was shocked. "How could I lose? I never lose. I can't believe it," he bellowed. And that was the story of the Grimm Rocker.

Grimm was worried that he might lose the battle and not be able to play guitar anymore. When he got to the Performance Platform he took out his guitar and amp: He was waiting

Loss of US routes serious blow to Cork/Kerry region Aer Lingus’s decision to cut US routes this winter is a major blow to tourism in the Cork/Kerry region. The decision to cut its Shannon to Chicago route as well as its Dublin to Washington and Dublin to San Francisco routes the day after Delta Airlines announced it was pulling its scheduled transatlantic service from Shannon is a serious blow to tourism. At a time when our tourism sector is already suffering, this decision will make it more difficult for American tourists to access the Cork/Kerry region. The impact on these areas will be significant as these parts of the country depend heavily on tourismbased employment. Tourism Ireland’s estimate for 2008 is that 8.8 million oversees visitors came to the island of Ireland, delivering €4.2 billion to the economy. Their detailed figures for 2007 show

that over two million visitors stayed in the Cork/Kerry and brought €844 million that year. This has now been put at risk. Blarney Castle, the Cork Jazz Festival, Garnish Island and the English Market all play a high-profile role in Tourism Ireland’s Global Ad Campaign launched at the end of April. But now the people watching these ads in some of the most important target markets will find it very difficult to visit these areas. We are advertising Ireland to an international market and then making it difficult for them to access these areas, and taxing those that do with a Government travel tax. In this difficult time for both our aviation industry and our tourism industry. The Government’s response has been the introduction of a controversial travel tax that has managed to hit both sectors at once. Aer Lingus Chairman Colm Barrington admitted earlier this week that he has written three times to the Government seeking to have this travel tax removed as it is acting as a serious disincentive to people travelling to Ireland. Fine Gael has called for the travel tax to be scrapped as soon as possible as it will cost the economy and the Government far more than they could ever hope to raise from it.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

What a poem says is of primary importance. A poem makes a statement or a declaration; it expresses a feeling or a mood; it relates a story or conveys an idea. These, constitute meaning in poetry. But a poem is more than a statement, a declaration, a feeling, a mood, a story or an idea. If that were all, prose would be enough. A poem is itself; it is an act of magic, an imaginative creation. No one can analyse its magic fully. One thing we can say, however: a poem is made up of words. Words have not only meaning, but also form and sound. Anita Daly of the Ballinlough Writers Group has given us this week’s image creating poem. We’ll never look at a mouse in the same light again.

MURPHY - A MUSICAL ODYSSEY’ The poetry of Gerry Murphy adapted to live music performance plus radio documentary as part of the 2009 Cork Midsummer Festival Wednesday 24 – Saturday 27 June Preview Tuesday 23 June The writing of provocative Cork poet Gerry Murphy is set to find a brand new audience next week, moving from page to stage during this year’s Midsummer Festival as Everyman Palace Theatre presents THE PEOPLES REPUBILC OF GERRY MURPHY - A MUSICAL ODYSSEY! The poems have been adapted to a live music performance by a group of musician actors, zapping Murphy’s writing into life through voice, music, image and sound. All the outrageous personas that infamously stalk through Murphy’s satirical writing come to life in a riotous fusion of music, poetry and laughter. The hugely entertaining writing of Gerry Murphy has been a long time source of inspiration for award winning audio producer, composer and playwright Roger Gregg. Gregg, who has been hailed as ‘one of a handful of truly great radio dramatists’ by BBC Radio 4, brings the oral tradition of poetry into the digital age. As well as the live stage show, Gregg has succeeded in lifting Gerry Murphy, one of Ireland’s most exciting contemporary voices, off the silence of the printed page and presenting his work to a global audience in several media of the digital age. Led by Gregg, Crazy Dog Audio Theatre first performed THE PEOPLES REPUBILC OF GERRY MURPHY at the Everyman bar during the 2008 Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, which was recorded in eight You Tube videos and has been produced as an Audio CD. A five part radio documentary on Gerry Murphy has also been produced for broadcast on Cork Campus Radio 98.3fm which will air from 12pm each day from Monday 15 - Friday 19 June. Both the You Tube clips of the live performance and the radio documentary are available to download from www.crazydogaudiotheatre.com. A selection of Gerry Murphy’s poems have been painted onto the foyer walls at the Everyman by artist Lisa Zagone, which are available to view for free each day from 10am – 8pm. PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF GERRY MURPHY – A MUSICAL ODYSSEY has been adapted for the stage, composed and directed by Roger

Is annamh a bhíonn am agam na nuachtáin difriúla a léamh ó chlúdach go clúdach, ambaist leis na cinn-línte atá ag furmhór dóibh,ní chuirfeadh sé fonn léitheoireachta ar einne! Pé scéal é, is maith liom an crosfhocal atá ar "Independent" an Domhnaigh agus ós rud e go bhfuil litreacha na léitheoirí

Oibrímid teach lóistín is leaba sa bhaile ar an gCarraig Dhubh ar feadh os cionn deich mbliana anois. Cé nach bhfuil ach ceithre seomraí againn agus go bhfuilimid cláraithe le Fáilte na hÉireann is saothar an-dhian é chun aon airgid a thuilleadh. Níos lua sa bhliain ghearramar siar ár gcostas le idir 18% and 25% chun breis daoine a mhealladh – agus d’éirigh linn daoine a aimsiú. Ach níl pingin rua á thuilleadh againn chun tuarastal nó chun brabús a aimsiú – níl ann ach airgead reatha, dóthain le billí reatha a íoc, go háirithe chun bia na gcuairteoirí a cheannach Táimid sásta leis na cúrsaí seo, mar is eol dúinn nach mar seo atá sé do neart daoine eile i mbun seirbhís leaba is lóistín a sholáthar – agus ina measc san tá daoine ann nár mhiste dóibh éirí as tar éis roinnt mhaith blianta sa tionscal. Ní féidir locht a chur ar eagraíochtaí bolscaireachta turasóireachta mar go bhfuil siad ag déanamh a ndícheall áiteanna éagsúla sa tír a chur in iúl don bpobal le fógraíocht áitiúil agus idirnáisiúnta – agus tá sé ag obair, dar liom. Ina theannta sin moltar d’úinéirí tithe lóistín is leaba a gcuid bolscaireachta féin, go háirithe ar an idirlíon, a dhéanamh – ach cuireann seo leis na gcostais. Aimsímid ár ngnó ó oibrithe a thagann chun oibre in eastáit tionsclaíochta áitiúla i ndeisceart na cathrach, agus ó dhaoine áitiúla go bhfuil ócáid ar siúl sa chlann, ócáid mar bhreith-lá, bainis nó sochraid, ach tá ócáidí mar iad gann go leoir. Ina theannta sin tá teach saoire againn i nDún Chaoin, i nGaeltacht Chiarraí agus is féidir le seisear dhaoine fásta fánach ann. Sea an chéad bliain againn é agus tá roinnt áirithintí aimsithe againn do mí Iúil ach go háirithe. I nDún Chaoin dúinn an deireadh seachtaine seo thart is beag cuairteoirí a bhí thart mar cé go bhfuil neart tithe saoire and tithe leaba is lóistín sa cheantair is ar éigin go raibh daoine lonnaithe iontu. Ar ché Dhún Chaoin dúinn sa chaife iasc ann bhuaileamar le beirt ó Chathair Dhónaill, beirt go bhfuil árasán saoire acu, agus bhíodar ar an Daingean chun an turasóireacht a scrúdú, go háirithe mar nach raibh oiread agus iarratas acu ceann amháin dá n-árasán a ligean go fóill i mbliana – agus seo lár mi an Mheithimh! Cad is cúis leis an titim ollmhór seo sa turasóireacht? Ní hé nach bhfuil airgead ag daoine ach níl daoine sásta cibé airgead atá acu a chaitheamh – sin tuairim amháin a nocht cuntasóir amháin liom. Mo bharúil féin ná go bhfuil tionchar na dífhostaíochta níos measa ná mar atá á thuairisc sna meáin eile, agus nach bhfuil airgid ar bith le spáráil ag daoine. Tuairim eile a nocht cara liom le déanaí is ea go raibh taithí ag daoine cibé airgead a bhí acu ina bpóca a caithimh láithreach agus nach raibh taithí coigilte acu! Ní fheadar an meascán den trí rud is cúis le cúrsaí mar atá siad? Cibé ar bith, níor mhiste leanúint ar aghaidh, ceann síos, leis an obair i gcónaí. Bain taitneamh as an samhradh seo, ach go háirithe. 16 - Thur 18 Jun '09

ar an leathanach céanna, tugaim faoi ndear na cinn-línte sin anois is arís. Bhí litir amháin ann an Domhnach seo caite leis an gceann-líne "Teastaíonn uaireannta-lae na scoile níos faide uainn..." Ask Dr. Doug

by Dr. Douglas Meckelborg B.Ed., D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic)

THE TRUTH ABOUT "WEAR and TEAR" OF THE SPINE Of all the illnesses that plague mankind today, osteoarthritis is one of the most widespread. Most commonly referred to as "wear and tear", osteoarthritis can affect any joint in the body and is characterized by the deterioration of the cartilage- the natural shock absorber that cushions the inside of your joints and prevents the damaging friction of bone surfaces. Research indicates that it can be detected in the spine in 35% of the general population by the age of 30! Research also shows that early phases or stages of osteoarthritis in the spine can be seen on xray in 10% of fifteen year olds. Yes, even in children! Some researchers believe these figures to be even higher. By the time someone is seventy years old, this condition seems to be universal, meaning that almost every 70 year old on the planet has it. Does this mean this condition is caused solely by aging and that it cannot be slowed down or reversed? The good news is that none of those previously held notions are, in fact, true. Osteoarthritis in the spine has very little to do with the aging process alone. I repeat, very little to do with simply aging. And, yes, it can be slowed down and even reversed (in some cases) if caught soon enough. Think about it. If it only had to do with aging then why would there be

early signs of it in people in their teens, 20’s and 30’s? The causes of “wear and tear” in the spine involve a number of factors, among which are vertebral misalignments (which chiropractors call "vertebral subluxations") that have never been corrected. Added to this are other influences such as the biochemical make-up and strength of the cartilage, surrounding muscles, tendons, ligaments and bone. Even genetic factors will play a role in a person’s predisposition to the condition. However, research now shows that this condition, when it affects the spine, is no longer seen in terms of a disease process but rather your body's normal repair response to attempt to stabilize an area of your spine that is unstable. Osteoarthritis is an enormous self contained remodeling process. It is, in essence, your own body attempting to repair something that has been damaged or changed, or under undue stress; a joint or vertebral disc that has been under tremendous physical stress and is beginning to wear down. An alteration in the normal function or biomechanical pattern of movement of some of the vertebrae in the spine causes abnormal stress or force on a particular joint. Over time, these misalignments, coupled together with the other causative culprits, ultimately lead to spinal degeneration. Osteoarthritis is posing increasing health problems for millions of sufferers. Correcting the vertebral misalignments and restoring optimal posture is crucial at getting to the source of this potentially debilitating condition.

with Garvan J. Lynch B.Sc.N.U.I. B.Sc. Chem. G.R.S.C. B.Sc. Pharm. M.P.S.I. M.R.Pharm.S. of Lynchs Pharmacy Epilepsy is a disorder that disrupts the transmission of electrical signals inside the brain. Epilepsy can affect anyone at anytime. 30,000 to 40,000 people in Ireland have some form of epilepsy. Symptom episodes — known as seizures — are often subtle, causing strange sensations, emotions and behavior. Some people with epilepsy simply stare blankly for a few seconds when having a seizure, while others have full-fledged convulsions. At least two unprovoked seizures are required for a diagnosis of epilepsy. The onset of epilepsy is most common during childhood and after age 65, but the condition can occur at any age. Treatments may leave you free of seizures, or at least reduce their frequency and intensity. Many children with epilepsy even outgrow the condition with

age. Although some forms of epilepsy tend to run in families, genetic inheritance plays only a partial role in causing epilepsy — perhaps by making a person more susceptible to environmental factors that cause seizures. In many cases, the onset of epilepsy can be traced to an accident, disease or medical trauma — such as a stroke — that injures your brain or deprives it of oxygen. In rare instances, epilepsy may be caused by a tumor in your brain. However, epilepsy has no identifiable cause in about half of all affected people. Most people with epilepsy can become seizure-free by using a single anti-epileptic drug. Others can decrease the frequency and intensity of their seizures with medication. More than half the children with medication-con-

trolled epilepsy can eventually stop medications and live a seizure-free life. Many adults also can discontinue medication after two or more years without seizures. As with many chronic conditions, maintaining your overall health is an important step in controlling epilepsy. Sleep deprivation is a powerful trigger of seizures. Be sure to get adequate rest every night, and make a conscious effort to eat a balanced diet, exercise and manage stress effectively. For more information contact Garvan at Lynchs Pharmacy on 4366923, or contact Brainwave, the Irish Epilepsy Association, which provides information and support for people with Epilepsy on 01-4557500.

Insomnia Hi Dr. Cronin. I am finding it absolutely impossible to sleep of late. A number of years ago I also experienced sleeping difficulties, this was probably because I was going through an unpleasant time and at the time was also going through a divorce. I had many a sleepless night during those years; however, when we eventually did divorce I was able to sleep like a baby and continued to sleep very well up until recently. The thing is that I have met someone new and we get on very well, the problem is that ever since I did meet this person I am unable to sleep at all, is this insomnia?- Collette Greetings Collette. Insomnia is defined as a difficulty to fall asleep and/or staying asleep. Sleep disorders and problems are conditions that are common and quite possible to conquer. Your lack of sleep at the moment may be simply a result of the excitement of being in a new relationship, then again, it’s possible that there are unresolved issues that are work-

ing at a subconscious level and causing you difficulties. Many people suffer from insomnia and it can affect anyone at anytime and at any age. Short-term insomnia is also quite common and can be a result of some minor changes occurring in a person’s life. There are over 70 various sleeping disorders with the most common being: insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome (RLS) and narcolepsy. How much sleep a person needs depends upon the individual sleep requirements with some people needing 10-12 hours while others may only need 5 hours. Age also appears to be a factor with babies needing around 17 hours while the average adult will require 7 to 8 hours. Lack of sleep will create what is known as “sleep debt”, which basically refers to the fact that if a person does not get their required amount of sleep then that person’s body will eventually demand they do get it. Sleep deprivation can be dangerous and many studies using hand-eye coordination tasks have indicated that people who have been deprived of sleep are likely to fare just as poorly as someone who has consumed alcohol. Sleep is essential to our psychical and mental health and although our bodies are inactive during

sleep the brain continues to remain incredibly active. The usual sleep cycle involves 5 phases: Drowsiness, Light Sleep, Deep Sleep, SlowWave Deep Sleep and Rapid Eye Movement (REM). Approximately 50% is spent in Light Sleep, approximately 20% of time is spent in REM and the remaining time spent in the other stages. If insomnia becomes chronic it is important to address the problem as lack of sleep may lead to other problems and difficulties. There may be various factors contributing to an inability to sleep well, for example, sleep deprivation may by a symptom of depression, or be a reaction to worries or stress, noise or someone snoring may be the reason, irregular hours or too much caffeine can contribute, physical pain will make it difficult to sleep well, and therefore, the cause of the insomnia will actually determine the treatment. Lunchtime Theatre at the CAT Corks best kept secret, The Cork Arts Theatre launched it’s Summer Lunchtime Theatre “Irish Plays & Performances” last night in the Bar at The CAT by Cllr. Deirdre Forde. Although a busy little Theatre so many Cork people still do not know it exists and yet is only 100 metres over the Bridge from The Opera House. The Cork Arts Theatre (CAT) was established in 1975 as a non-profit making organisation, to support and encourage the growth of theatre in Cork. Since that time it has grown from a small occasional theatre to one of the busiest venues in the region. CAT is a non-profit theatre that provides an artistic home to audiences and artists. By developing and producing quality affordable theatre with an emphasis on new and world-premiere plays, we prove that there are no small theatres - only limited imaginations.

Ballinacurra Ladies Camogie Win County D League History was created for the Ladies Camogie Club at the weekend when the U12 team won the County D League title against Clonakilty on a scoreline of 3-04 to 0-00. This was the culmination of a wonderful year for the camogie club in only their second season since they were founded in March 2008. The final was held at Ballinlough on Saturday 13th June and a huge Ballinacurra support was in attendance to encourage the girls. All the Ballinacurra children had their faces painted for the occasion and there were many flags and scarves on display. There was a great buzz of anticipation among the supporters as the girls had come through impressively in their quarter final and semi-final ties against Carrigaline and Mallow respectively. Friends and relatives, young and old, had come out to support the girls and everyone waited to see what would unfold. In the early part of the game there were some fierce exchanges between the sides as both teams tried to assert their superiority. Gradually though Chloe Sigerson and Michaela McGann began to get the upper hand in midfield and drive some good ball into the forwards. The forwards fought tigerishly against a strong back line from Clonakilty and try as they might the Clonakilty backs could not keep the girls out with Keelin Buckley eventually driving the sliothar to the back to the net for the opening score to put the girls from the Village ahead. The goal served to give a massive boost to the girls and they poured forward in search of another score. The Clonakilty defence was holding firm though and this time we had to be satisfied with a well taken point from Chloe Sigerson to extend the lead. And so it was as the final whistle blew there great scenes of joy among the players and mentors. The supporters too poured onto the field to join in the celebrations. At the presentation of the cup to the Ballinacurra Captain Erin Kane due respect was paid to Clonakilty for making it a tough final but the cup was coming to the Village and the celebrations went on well into the night.

Ballycotton lifeboat rescues yacht with 3 persons on board off the rocks at Ballycotton The emergency services received a 999 call from a mobile phone on Sunday morning, June 14, seeking assistance for a yacht gone aground on rocks off Ballycotton. Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat was alerted and both the all weather lifeboat, Austin Lidbury, and their boarding boat were launched. The 22 ft. yacht was on passage from Cork harbour to Ballycotton in East Cork when its crew miscalculated their position and ran aground on the rocks on the small island between Ballycotton lighthouse and Ballycotton. As the lifeboat crew were assembling at the station at 02:15am it was possible to see the yacht, with its starboard light visible from shore. The all weather Trent class lifeboat stood by in deeper water illuminating the area while the lifeboat boarding boat carefully approached the yacht. They successfully removed the three persons from the yacht and placed them aboard the RNLI all weather Trent class lifeboat. The three men were safely landed ashore on Ballycotton pier at 03:15 am. At 06:30 am the lifeboat crew reassembled at the lifeboat station and were joined by two of the yacht crew. The tide was starting to flood and the yacht was starting to refloat. Again the all weather Trent class lifeboat waited in deeper water while the lifeboat boarding boat landed the two men on board the yacht. A line was attached to the yacht and it was pulled carefully off the rocks. It was then taken to Ballycotton and put on the strand where its damage could be assessed. This was a challenging shout, successfully completed. Training constantly takes place for a lifeboat crewmember and Ballycotton lifeboat coxswain, Ian Sheridan, and his crew are relieved and satisfied with a good job well done.

Home & Garden

As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower garden Deadhead roses regularly, except those producing hips, and give a mid-summer feed of rose fertiliser. Tie in dahlia stems as they develop, and thin to 4-5 for extra large blooms. Cut down aquilegias and sweet rocket after flowering to prevent lavish self-seeding. Prune evergreen ceanothus after flowering, cutting back almost to the main branches. Take cuttings of osteospermums and Verbena rigida (V. venosa), both vulnerable to frost and damp later on.

Kitchen Garden Make a last sowing of peas and dwarf French beans for late crops. Protect cauliflowers from bight sunlight by breaking 2-3 leaves over the curds. Sow maincrop turnips for storing. Tuck straw under bush tomatoes and cucumbers to keep fruits clean. As crops are cleared, transplant brassicas to limed positions, and water in well. Sow savoy cabbages in a shaded nursery bed for late winter supplies. Start using the largest self-blanching celery heads; earth or paper up traditional trench kinds. Sow chervil in a slightly shaded bed, in case plants bolt suddenly in hot weather. Sow a fast beetroot variety for baby beets in October.

Lawns & Hedges

finish. Trim privet hedges regularly to maintain a neat outline.

Green House Check greenhouse plants for watering daily all this month, and damp down regularly.

Water Garden In warm weather inspect fish regularly for early signs of diseases.

In General After summer showers / storms, check for scorched shoots, signs of fireblight, on Rosaceae shrubs such as pears, pyracantha and cotoneaster

Mow lawns twice a week if necessary for a fine

Last Week’s Teazer When the police arrived a man was lying under the car dead. Investigation revealed that although he was not the car’s owner he was the last person to drive it. The car had last been driven that morning but the man’s time of death was established at about 3PM. The car’s owner was discovered in France. Eventually the police and the coroner were satisfied that no crime had been committed.

What is the explanation ? Last Week’s Answer The dead man was a mechanic. He had been servicing the car while the owner went on holiday. While he was working on the car the jack gave way and the car fell on him. This Week’s Teazer. Andy’s Aunt had lived all her life in Los Angeles having moved there when she married an American. She had lost touch with Andy’s mother, her sister, for over 25 years. Then she suddenly wrote to say she was coming back for a holiday. Andy’s Mother gave him the flight number and asked him to pick his aunt up from Cork Airport. “ But how will I recognise her, I’ve never seen a photograph!” he objected. “And she’s never seen a photograph of you”, added his mother cheerfully, “But don’t worry, you won’t miss her.” And she didn’t, but how?

In The Loop with Peter Bowles

Congratulations to Mike Chesne from Riverstick who won last weeks competition for tickets to Anastacia. This week we’re giving away tickets to see Bell X 1 and Boyzone, all you have to do is email peteintheloop with your name and address to be entered in the draw. David Guetta’s new single featuring Kelly Rowland has come into the Irish charts at 36. I’ve been playing this one in the clubs for the last two months and I’m willing to put serious money on it making it to the top 3 at least. It’s the summer 09 anthem for me. Its classic gritty, thumping beats from Guetta, coupled with the sensational soaring sounds of Kelly Rowland that ticks all the boxes. Already getting a lot of airplay on the radio and screen time on tv, I hope it doesn’t become another overplayed-soon to be forgotten-hit. Marquee Time; Live at the Marquee kicks off tonight with the Prodigy. The group that gave a face to the rave scene in the 90s boasting hits like “Outer Space”, “Everybody In The Place” and well known “Firestarter”. Having sold 16million albums they released their 5th studio album last March. Tomorrow night sees pop sensation Shane Ward entertain the crowd after he had two sell out shows last year. Since winning the X Factor in 2005, Shayne has had a string of hit singles and a successful debut album. His first single, “That's My Goal”, was released in the UK December 2005 and became the fourth fastest selling single of all time after selling 313,000 copies on its first day of sales! Shane is working on his new album at the moment which is due for release later this year. Gilbert O’ Sullivan, Waterford born, will be performing on Saturday night to a fully seated crowd for what is sure to be an enchanting gig. Next it’s the turn of Tracey Chapman on Monday night, Tracy released her

self titled debut album in 1988 to positive reviews and, helped by a support slot on tour with 10,000 Maniacs, an appearance at Nelson Mandela's 70th Birthday Concert and the success of single Fast Car, the album became a smash hit, going many times platinum by the end of the year and winning four Grammy Awards including Best New Artist. This gig wont disappoint. Tuesday night plays host to Chickenfoot. This band is a superband made up of outstanding talent, former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony looking after the vocals and bass, while six-string wizard Joe Satriani and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith complete the winning combo. Expect an electric gig from the top men of good ol’ rock. Finishing off this weeks look ahead is a man at the peak of his career, Flo Rida, he plays the Marquee on Wednesday night. His single “Right Round” sold 636,000 mp3s online in the first week of its release, smashing the record for digital first week sales which was previously held by his first major hit, “Low”. Douglas Camogie Our U11 B team started off their league campaign with a good win away to the Glen. Our forward line of Tara Costello, Katie Brennan were very unlucky not to score due to some very good defending by the Glen back line . Caoimhe O Dwyer opened the scoring with a very good worked goal , followed up by a great double by team captain Eadaoin Downey. Ruth Hickey and Megan Walsh played really well in midfield with Megan chipping in with a goal just before half time. The Glen started really well in the second half until Denise Harrington made one of her telling runs to score a great goal. Jill Donegan and Emer Kelly picked up a goal each to finish the game on a high . The back line played really well thru out the game, with Sarah very good in goal.

Final score Glen Rovers 0 – 00 Douglas 7 – 00 This weekend the u14 team from Douglas Camogie Club travel to Laois/Offaly to represent Cork in the National Feile na nGael competition. This is a widely contested event with camogie teams fro m all over the country competing for this prestigious title which is the All Ireland of underage camogie. The girls have been training long and hard, since street league level in preparation for this event. This team have had great success in the past, u11 Seandun winners, u12 County winners, u13 Seandun winners and a few of our girls have taken part in last years Feile so have valuable experience to share with the team. They have been fundraising very hard to raise funds for this weekend, a special word of thanks to Susan Kavanagh and Therese Lynch for this. We wish to offer our extreme gratitude to all those who gave sponsorship and donations, it is greatly appreciated and we will be writing to all individually to express our thanks. We have a panel of 24 girls, captained by Aisling Fox who stepped in to replace Emma Kavanagh, who unfortunately broke her collarbone a few weeks ago and cannot play. She is still an integral part of the team preparations and will travel to assist and support her teammates. The team is mentored by Phillip Kavanagh, Paul Lynch, Paul Fox and Helen Noonan. We would like to wish all our girls the very best of luck, enjoy the weekend and hopefully bring the Feile Cup back to Douglas.

Douglas Ladies Gaelic Football U14d County Final, this was the first time a team from Douglas ladies football club reached a County final so it was understandable that the girls would be a bit nervous going into this match. It took the Douglas girls a while to settle into the game and get to grips with the exelent passing game of Naomh Fionnbarra, but once they did the girls never looked back and kept up the pressure for the duration of the game . In almost every match there will be a couple of players that will stand out and there will be a couple who are not on their game, but it would have to be said that on this occassion there were 20 players who played outstanding football from the start right up to the final whistle and it was unfortunate on the day that we could not play the other 3 panel members. In the end Naomh Fionnbarra , who are a great team were just not up to the Douglas girls and it was great to see Douglas captain Sinead Roche the first person from Douglas ladies to be presented with a County Trophy, another first for Douglas Ladies football club. The Final Score Douglas 4-16, Naomh Fionnbarra 2-4.

Douglas GAA Douglas 4-14 St. Vincents 0-4 (Junior “B” Hurling Championship) Douglas displayed very impress form to defeat St. Vincent’s and get their championship campaign off to a great start in Ballinure last Sunday morning. This year John O’Keeffe and Brendan Larkin pulled off a major coup by bringing in Pat Harrington to administer the coaching and this has clearly paid dividends. The Douglas players hurled with great confidence and their first touch was of a standard that made a mockery of their Junior “B” status.

Denis O’Sullivan filled the void left between the posts following Paudie McCarthy’s retirement after last year’s successful league campaign while in front of him the full back line of Declan Reidy, John McCarthy and Cian O’Callaghan provided an experienced security blanket which refused to be breached. The addition of the evergreen John Clarke this year has been a huge boost to the team and he exerted a great influence from the centre half back position. On the flanks Brian Kenneally and young Philip Doherty pushed forward at every opportunity and this really opened up the St. Vincent’s defence. An early goal from Mike Conway along with points from Mark Kennedy and Kenneally ensured Douglas’ advantage was reflected on the scoreboard.

Pfizer Pitch and Putt Notes Our Intermediates have been in excellent form in recent weeks around the country. Declan Sheehan won the Tralee Intermediate scratch cup two weeks ago, followed by winning the Overall Nett in the Riverside open and the Intermediate prize in the Riverside scratch cup. Frank Bruen was also in fine form winning the Intermediate Gross at Riverside’s open singles. Chris McCarthy won the Intermediate scratch cup in Parteen on Sunday. While Gary O Sullivan won his first prize as a senior winning the Final 18 in the Riverside scratch cup shooting a great score of 47. Fixtures No Wednesday Fourball this week due to the Cork Juvenile Matchplay championship being played until Friday evening on the course 21st June Sunday Fourball, 10:30am sharp

Douglas continued to dominate the second half. Barry Fitzsimon’s rolled back the years to control midfield along with Ronan O’Donoghue while team captain Andrew Shinnick added a brilliant second half point. Noel Nevin embellished his reputation as the go to guy in attack with two goals before Brian Kenneally rounded off a brilliant personal performance with late goal to confirm Douglas’ victory. On Friday 19th June, Douglas play Youghal in the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship. Throw in is at 7.30om in Lisgoold.

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local & National Scene By Pat Harrington Cork Hurling We Corkonians are a demanding lot, especially so when it comes to our expectations of our intercounty hurlers. It is ingrained in our psyche that we have the right to win the all-Ireland title every year. This year for the first time in quite some time there was a lack of confidence in the Rebels prior to the Tipperary encounter. After the game there was a certain amount of satisfaction with the performance. Was the performance a good one? Yes it was positive. Certainly there are problems in the attack and unless remedial action is taken Cork will not challenge beyond the quarter-final. One Echo journalist made a number of suggestions, two of which I would concur with; to place John Gardiner and Tom Kenny in the half forward division. John Gardiner has struggled in defence over the past few years and the McCarthys Timmy and Niall have been putting in poor performances with some time. It is time for the Cork management team to start acting more revolutionary. Given the gift I would play the O’Connor twins at centre field, in the half back line Seán Óg, Curran and perhaps McGann or Hartnett. I wonder are we to bemoan another summer of false promises. Crib I have a bit of a crib (nothing new there as some of you might say) regarding the draw for the premier intermediate hurling championship. Newcestown and Mallow were drawn against each other in round 2, both having been defeated in the opening round. Newcestown won

The Mick Cashman Cup - Blackrock Hurling Club By Aidan Lougheed The Mick Cashman Cup was launched last Tuesday at the Blackrock Hurling Club on the main pitch in glorious sunshine. The cup is named in memory of Mick Cashman one of the finest hurlers to ever have played for Blackrock and Cork, winning six railway cup medals in a glittering career that also saw him lead his club to their a county title in 1956 after a twenty six year gap, defeating a great team Glen Team which included the legendary Christy Ring. His love and passion for the sport was passed down to the next generations like a master craftsman passing on his craft with both his sons Tom and Jim continuing in his footsteps. Tom had the distinction of captaining Cork to all Ireland success in ’86 a winning team in which Jim also played. Incredibly both have won every honour in the game, long regarded as among the best to have ever played for club and county. Tom was named in the half back position on the Cork Hurling team of the century. The torch has now been passed onto the next generation and it was wonderful to see Anne

the game and got a bye into the quarter-final. All winners in round 1 would have to play in round 3. Surely the county board must look at this in the future. There appears to be a lack of fairness here. Fitzgerald Stadium There has been a revamp of Kerry’s signature stadium. Speaking to some of the senior intercounty players they were loud in there complements regarding the dressing room facilities but comments were made concerning the fact that the ice baths were available only to the Kerry contingent. Leinster Championship Dublin overcame Antrim to qualify for the semi-final with Wexford. This is a repeat of last year’s semi-final which the Slaneysiders won in a replay. Wexford scored an impressive victory over a fancied Offaly side. The thinking amongst hurling people is that hurling needs a successful Dublin outfit. Remember the Dubs have not competed in an all-Ireland final since 1960 and success for the sky blues would be to get to a Leinster final in Croke Park and to rattle if not beat the opposition. We may slag off the Dubs but they have the population and a successful hurling team would be a major boost to the promotion of the game in the county. Once again the area of injury time is a live issue. In the Cork vs. Kerry game the referee signaled two minutes to be added on yet he played nearly four minutes. In the Dublin vs. Meath game two minutes was signaled even though a player was down injured for three minutes. I am not referee bashing here; in fact I think is time the pressure was taken off referees in this area. Talk to you next week, Pat.
