The Word
by George Thompson - Editor
I doubt if anyone will ever forget Michael Jackson The shock wave that rocked the world last week at the news of Michael Jackson’s demise was felt throughout the universe. A sad and eccentric character his music and stage performance was nothing short of genius. His music will always remain popular and I doubt if anyone will ever forget Michael Jackson. It was great to see the crowds attend the Community Bonfire at Loughmahon Park in Mahon last week. Everything was well organised, with lots of entertainment – bands, face painters, stilt walkers and lots of healthy fruit being handed out to all and sundry. The weather held it’s sunny, happy face and everyone had a great evening without an ounce of trouble and all in a week where we see newly appointed Lord Mayor, Dara Murphy call for stricter control of bonfires after some of the goings on in various parts of the city. I remember growing up and in the weeks leading up to the big night, everyone was on the hunt for material for the ‘bona’ – tree branches, pallets were a luxury, old mattresses, old armchairs, and anything timber. All that was left was a pile of ashes and a few springs from the old chairs. I amazed to see at one location, smouldering in the middle of the ‘bona’ from the night before, some old computers –I guess it’s what you call bonfire night 21st century style. There was a great turn out on the Marina last Sunday for the Lee Rowing Club’s Midsummer Regatta. Crews from all over came to compete but while the weather changed and spoiled the day in some respects, it didn’t dampen the spirits. Many spectators lined the banks of the Lee and enjoyed a pleasant Sunday. Well done to all who organised this great event which is now a major date on the annual sporting calendar.

Reference: Changes to Home Tuition Grant bt department of Education and Science/ See page 3 of Irish Examiner 0f 24th June. Dear Editor, I wish to draw your attention to changes the Department of Education and Science is trying to bring in regarding home tuition grant. I sent article to Irish Examiner to try and highlight the damage that these changes are going to cause. These changes are going to have a severe impact upon the future lives of many hundreds of intellectually disabled pre school children in this country. The age profile of the children I am concerned about is 2.5 years to 5 years. If you read the article from the Irish Examiner you would be forgiven for thinking that it is only school going children are affected by changes. More spin by the government press office trying as usual to muddy the waters. Many of the children who are going to be affected by changes are intellectually disabled, many non verbal, have various and varied behavioural problems, and also invariably not toilet trained. They have to be taught how to learn; therefore how in God's name can a tutor be deemed to be appropriately trained to deal with these children simply because they have a B.ed or H.Dip???? Teaching these children, to prepare them for mainstream or other schools , needs a completely different set of skills not taught in teacher training colleges. The key to helping our children is appropriate skill sets. If a national teacher has these extra skill sets as well as their teaching qualification all good and well, unfortunately the vast majority of teachers do not. The existing, or old rules, were brought in in January 2007, and we as a charity welcomed them as it brought in minimum standards. The changes now envisaged by the department of education and science benefit not the children , but rather unemployed qualified teachers or newly qualified teachers. They do not benefit our children. I stupidly believed the department was primarily concerned with the education of our children!!! I have written to the Minister, Batt O'Keefe, to ask how a teaching qualification equips a person to deal with our children adequately, appropriately given the specific skills set needed. To date no reply!!! What a surprise. I should point out that Assessment reports , usually done by HSE funded local intervention teams, or regional teams actually outline educational goals, targets etc for our children. Their recommendations for pecs, aba, teach concerning the educational needs of child are not part of national teachers skill sets. So the professionals tell us parents what should be done for our children and the Minister for Education tells us to ignore this report and go do something else! If the Minster and his department have their way on this the last link between appropriate education and our children will be gone forever. Our charity at present helps about 30 schools in Cork deal with ASD children. We are asked by principals and teachers for help. If the department of Education and Science thinks teachers are the right people to teach our pre -school children now come we cannot meet the demand of teachers and schools in Cork who are asking for help because they do not have the relevant knowledge and experience or training to deal with autistic/ASD children in school environment??? That situation is not the fault of the teachers concerned, it is down to lack of appropriate training and assistance being given to them by the department of education and science. If we, the parents of autistic children loose this fight over appropriate early intervention we might as well condemn our children to be forever confined to the margins of Irish Society. Education is the main driving force in improving the future prospects of our children. What is the point of people asking for referendum on children’s rights when the government of this country is doing its best erode any rights that we already have, or still have. Any new referendum will have no teeth and will be totally watered done. As with all

disability legislation in this country, 'practicality' and if 'resources allow' and everything has to be at the behest of department of finance will be at heart of any referendum. Parents have had to fight to get right for our disabled children to get an education. We only got that in early 1990's thanks to O'Donoghue case. We had to fight to get government to except international best practice and allow appropriate early intervention( crucial for our children to reach their full potential). That only came in at end of 1990's ( the above threatens this). We have had to fight to get alternative types of educational interventions, e.g. ABA, and the government is doing all in its power to neuter and get rid of that to this present day. The list goes on and on. Parents have enough to deal with a special needs child in th family. WHY? , WHY?, WHY?, is it always the disabled, infirmed, and aged in our society that have to be hit whenever there is a problem with public finances. I would be grateful if you could highlight the issues detailed above. Yours Sincerely Kieran Kennedy - C.E.O. Shine/IPAA, The Shine Centre, Western View, Carrigaline, County Cork. Fitting In
on it so I went up to ask one of the cashiers. The cashier took the toy off me and announced that it was free. I looked at her in disbelief and said, “It’s free?” “Nah,” she scoffed, “the only free thing around here is abuse.” Somewhat deflated, I waited while she scanned the toy. She piped up again and said, “Guess!” I misheard and thought she said ‘Yes.’ She rolled her eyes to heaven and said, “No, I said, ‘Guess’. I was by now very confused and muttered, “Oh, ‘Guess,” and then struggling very hard to come up with a reasonable price that would not invite further derision, I offered 13 euros. The Cashier laughed triumphantly and said “No, it’s 15 euros. Do you still want it?” I was exhausted and so just nodded dumbly. Clutching my new purchase, I reeled out of the shop with my hands shaking and my head befuddled. All I could think of was that the Cashier must have thought that I was on day release from a mental institute that I could not handle a little light chat to pass an otherwise dull afternoon. The experience shocked me. It showed me that after so many years away from the Cork scene, that I had lost the gift for banter. If I wanted to fit back in, I would have to speed up my mental processes and unlock my tongue a little quicker to keep up.
After 21 years of living overseas, my husband and I moved back to Cork – lock, stock and three kids aged 12, 8 and 6. It was time. We knew that it would be a culture shock, not least because Ireland has changed utterly from the one we left in 1985; we have never lived there as a family with all the grown up things to worry about like paying a mortgage, getting the kids to school, electricity bills and running a car. We were very much looking forward to it but deliberately kept a lid on the excitement as we braced ourselves for the shocks and surprises that inevitably lay head. Every night, as the time drew nearer for us to leave Hong Kong, the boys and I would take out the map of Cork and we examine it in minute detail. The first thing that strikes you about Cork is the amount of open space and countless sports fields of which there must be at least thirty in the city alone. We had one Granny’s house marked out – second Granny lives just off the page - the cousins in Waterfall, our house and the schools to which the boys would be going. The younger two were horrified when I told them that they would have to walk to their primary school every morning because their mammy has no intention of raising her stress levels fighting the snarl up of traffic for which Douglas has become famous. They would have to don their wellies (after I explained to son number 3 what a welly was), raincoats and walk. We marked out our house with an x and their school with a circle. On the map, the entire route is only an inch. They cackled with glee when they saw that their eldest brother’s daily commute is almost two feet. Even though they went back to Ireland for holidays every summer they were anxious about the change and bombarded me with questions like, “Will the teachers talk to us in Irish,” and “Will I make friends?” We focussed on the positives such as more open space to play in, regular access to cousins and grandparents, football and GAA matches on at normal times and not at midnight, and being back in the land of real Cadburys chocolate, Ice Berger ice-creams, Club Orange, Taytos, Denny’s sausages, rhubarb crumble and cream. Actually, you can get Cadburys chocolate anywhere however, the type that is available in Hong Kong is made with palm oil - to stop it from melting but as my nephew, who visited us for a month during his transition year said, “It’s ‘cat’”. The boys I knew would be fine: like all • Deep sea diving, Oisin MacSweeney from Crosshaven and Donagh O Leary children, they are refrom Douglas at Sandycove Beach, Kinsale Co. Cork, yesterday. silient and can adapt Pic Provision to almost any environment. I wasn’t so sure about myself. Some years ago, we were home for Christmas and after promising myself that I would not get caught up in the craziness that is Christmas shopping, I found myself in the Next shop on Patrick Street contemplating a wooden train for one of my nephews. I couldn’t see a price

a vital local amenity during school summer holidays Cork City Council has outlined the services that will be provided this Summer in the Douglas Pool. Cork City Council has confirmed that during the school summer holidays in July and August the Gus Healy Pool in Douglas will be open from 6.30am to 8pm Monday to Friday. Leisureworld, who operate the pool on behalf of Cork City Council, will provide a range of activities at the pool to suit all ages including swimming lessons. During the year the pool is open 7am to 3pm and 6pm to 10pm Monday to Friday. The public session at the pool is 1pm to 2pm each weekday with the remaining hours for schools and clubs. The pool is open on Saturdays for 7am to 4pm for clubs and closed Sundays. Douglas Pool is available for hire by any group for an hourly rate ranging from €65 for primary schools to €116. The cost for an adult is €4 and €2 for children and OAPs. The Council states that there is insufficient demand to date to justify opening the pool for 3pm to 6pm on weekdays as the operating costs would be too high. Cork City Council has been waiting 9 years to upgrade the Douglas Pool but the last Local Authority Swimming Pool Programme was closed in July 2000 and the Government has yet to introduce a replacement. Given the current economic conditions it is unlikely that a programme will be introduced in the short tem. Until a new programme is launched which will allow the Douglas Pool upgrade it facilities the pool will not be able to meet the growing demand from large schools, active clubs and an exploding local population. More information on activities at the Douglas Pool can be gotten by contacting them directly at 021-4293073.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
As the fourth of July approaches I am reminded of a poem in the book ‘My Road’ by Marion Rose Horgan from Cobh. If you haven’t already got a copy, please rush out and get one, it’s a book well worth having and a keepsake you will always treasure. Marion tells us that her poem ‘Independence Day’ was written to celebrate the birth of her nephew, David Warren Hughes,on the 4th July 2002. It gives an entire new feeling to the occasion. Dave Horgan and his wife Trish were expecting their fifth child in 2002.Dave, who has always been a fan of America and all things American, thought that it would be really special if the baby could be born on Independence Day. Trish, who is the epitome of organization, was more interested in getting the baby into the world on the earliest possible date, but being the dutiful and devoted wife she is, she duly obliged and David Warren Hughes was born on Thursday, the fourth of July 2002, weighing in a sturdy 9lbs. Dave’s sister Marian Rose was icing a chocolate cake to celebrate the baby’s homecoming when these lines came to mind ... INDEPENDENCE DAY A brand new day, fourth of July, A newborn fills his lungs and cries. A new star’s shining in the skies It’s Independence Day. An eaglet starts to learn to fly, Under his mother’s watchful eye. He’s looking upwards to the sky It’s Independence Day. Life is so short, so let it be, Brimful of opportunity. I wish you deep serenity, It’s Independence Day. Pair winds and fortune may you find, And happiness and peace of mind. Be ever patient, true and kind. It’s Independence Day The cord is cut, now you will be In awe of your great liberty. May you fulfill your destiny, It’s Independence Day. Marian Rose Horgan Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. An Giota Gaeilge Le Liam Ó Móráin
Lá Neamhspleáchais Meiriceá orainn cheana … Nach iontach mar a cheiliúrtaí conas ar aimsíodh ‘saoirse’ nó an neamhspleáchas? I gceann cúpla lá, an ceathrú lá de mí Iúil, ceiliúrfaidh muintir na Stáit Aontaithe a lá mhór bunaithe ar an lá sa bhliain 1776 inar aimsigh siad a saoirse ó Shasana. Inniu, gan amhras, is ócáid é an lá mór seo chun oibreacha tine, paráid, oireachtais clann, carnabhail, ceolchoirmeacha, cluichí spóirt, óráidí polaitiúla agus neart ócáidí príobháideacha agus poiblí eile a thionól a léireoidh stair, rialtas agus traidisiúin na Stáit Aontaithe. Seo ‘lá náisiúnta’ sna Stáit Aontaithe agus ceiliúrtar ar fud an domhain é ní amháin ag lucht Meiriceá amháin ach baineann neart daoine eile sult as an ócáid mór freisin, muintir na hÉireann ina measc. I rith an réabhlóid Meiriceánach, ar an 2ú Iúil 1776, tharla an deighilt dlíthiúil idir na coilíneachtaí Meiriceánach ó Shasana nuair a vótáil an Dara Comhdháil Mór-roinne rún an neamhspleáchais a mhol Richard Henry Lee (Virginia). Nuair a d’éirigh leis an vóta seo dírigh an comhdháil ar ráiteas faoin neamhspleáchas, ag tabhairt míniú ar a mbeartas, a ullmhú agus a eisiúint. D’ullmhaigh an Coiste de Chúigear an ráiteas seo a pléadh sa Chomhdháil, agus b’ é Thomas Jefferson an príomh-údar. Tar éis roinnt mion athruithe, d’aontaigh an comhdháil leis ar an gceathrú lá de mí Iúil. Anseo in Éirinn an náire dúinn é nach bhfuil lá neamhspleáchais againn féin? Gan amhras is é Lá ‘Fhéile Pádraig ár lá náisiúnta, ach is ar éigin a cheiliúraimid lá neamhspleáchais na tíre ó Shasana, bunaithe ar an bpolaitíocht. Arís is dócha go mbeadh raic den scoth ann faoin dáta cuí a roghnú – an in1916 um Cáisc nó sna fichidí nuair a chéad bunaíodh an saorstáit, nó cad é an dáta is oiriúnaí? Is dócha go bhfuil daoine ann nach creideann gur ceart dúinn lá neamhspleáchais a thionól nuair atá na ‘Sasanaigh’ fós i mbun cuid den tír, go polaitiúil, cé go bhfuil socrú síochána i réim a thugann deis do gach duine páirt a glacadh i rialú na háite. Mo bharúil féin má tá sé ceart lá neamhspleáchais a cheiliúradh in Éirinn sa lá atá inniu ann, is um Cáisc gach bliain ar chóir dúinn seo a dhéanamh. An bhfuil mórán spéise ag daoine inniu i rudaí mar seo – nach nglacann siad leis go bhfuil ‘saoirse’ anois ann, agus go bhfuil neart fadhbanna eile ann? B’fhéidir go bhfuil an ceart acu, ach abair gur baineadh an ‘saoire’ seo uathu – cad a dhéanfadh siad ansin? Ní féidir linn glacadh leis go bhfuil an talamh seo slán agus is tábhachtach é an ócáid a cheiliúradh. Ceiliúrann muintir neart tíortha éagsúla a ghnóthaigh a gcuid neamhspleáchais ó thíortha le riocht iontu lá ‘náisiúnta’ neamhspleáchais, ach ní cheiliúraimid anseo in Éirinn – ar an tslí is a cheiliúrann tíortha eile, mar na Stáit Aontaithe mar shampla. Sin ráite, ní cheiliúrann tíortha eile lá náisiúnta bunaithe ar naomh, mar a dhéanaimid anseo, ach an oiread. Má tá tú chun Lá Neamhspleáchais na Stáit Aontaithe a cheiliúradh, bíodh lá maith agat.

Is fearr dorn beag de chéird ná lán-mhála d'ór Bhí mé ag smaoineamh ar an tseanfhocal sin nuair a chuala mé faoi bhás Míchíl -Michael jackson, an fear bocht agus gach staisiún Radio ag craoladh na scéalta mholta faoin laoch seo, go dtuga a Dhia fhéin suaimhneas síoraí dó anois. Sea, bhí saibhreas airgid thar bharr aige agus de réir mar a theann na laethanta ar aghaidh beidh saibhreas breise á thuilleamh aige cé nach bhfuil sé linn ina bheatha níos faide. Fear uaigneach ab ea é is dócha ina chónaí ina Ríocht fothaintiúil fhéin agus duirt a lán daoine a bhuail le Micheál, gur shíl siad gur aoibhinn leis bheith abalta maireachtain mar ghnath duine uaireannta agus siúl timpeall ar a shuaimhneas gan bheith faoi sholas na mean Cumarsáide de ló is d'oíche. Níl aon dabht ach go raibh fios a chéirde aige ó thosaigh sé amach ar bhóthar mar amhránaí agus rinnceoir-is iomaí cailín agus buachall óg a chaith tamaillín ag iarraidh aithris a dheanamh ar scil Mhichíl ag an "Moonwalk". Dúirt beirt dem' chlann gur chaith siad oíche amháin i dteannta a gcáirde ag iarraidh maistreact a fháil ar an 'damhsa stáitse' speisialta seo! Bhuel níl fhios againn an raibh bliain nó dhó athasach, aoibhinn i saol an fhir seo mar ba léir nach raibh móran sonais ag an gclann uile ,i laethanta a óige mar bhí a athair an-dian air agus níor bhain se taithneamh as a ghrá sa cheol in aon chor- bhí sé mar dualgas aige agus ní feidir craic a bhaint as sin mar dhéagóir. Tá súil agam go mbeidh suaimhneas ag a gclann agus a pháistí anois mar ba léir go raibh an fear bocht faoi bhrú i rith a shaoil ar fad agus níl sé ceart bheith ag cur isteach ar a saolta príomháideacha. Ceapaim gur dhéan Micheal Jackson a lán maitheasa i rith a shaoil agus is minic nach gcloistear faoina ghníomartha dearfacha, cneasta a bhaineann le caractéirí mar sin mar maireann siad faoi scáth poiblíochta an t-am go léir agus is iad na cinnlínte diultacha a chlíonn leo ró mhinic, faraor... Guím suaimnneas na hÁirde ar Mhícheál anois agus tá súil agam go bhfanfaidh an meas céanna ar a gcuid amhránaíochta go deo na ndeor. Eilís Uí Bhrain

PLAY PARK IN DOUGLAS VILLAGE. I am receiving increasing complaints re the above which relate to potential health hazards to young children in particular. There is chewing gum stuck to many pieces of equipment, cigarette buts on the ground and sticky masses of melted ice-cream and spilt juice on the ground, rubbish lying around and graffiti under the slides. One of the worst complaints was in relation to a large amount of excrement (which appeared to be human) under one of the slides in one of the little cubby holes that the children play in. Children of all ages use the park and parents have asked me to have council provide regular monitoring and cleaning of the park so that it can continue to be a valuable and much needed amenity in Douglas. I do know that a council official has been monitoring the equipment in previous years and have put motion down at council requesting a supervisor for same. I am awaiting a report as to how we can ensure that the money spent on this fabulous play park doesn't go to waste.
HEALTH INSURANCE COSTS The recent European Commission decision to initiate infringement proceedings before European Court of Justice over the Government’s special treatment of the VHI vindicates criticisms during the recent debates on the Health Insurance (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2008. “This European Commission move supports the position that the Health Minister has been conferring unfair advantage on the VHI in offering derogations which are not available to other players in the health insurance market. The VHI was ordered to seek authorisation from the Financial Regulator by 31 December 2008 but this deadline was extended to 31 March 2009. However, VHI also missed this deadline, forcing the Health Minster to sign an order shifting the date to 1 September. This means the VHI which has not been subject to the minimum solvency requirements or the same scrutiny as other health insurers. This is impeding competition and adversely affecting consumers. This is worrying given the uncertain economic times and further reflects the bungling of risk equalisation and the continual conferral of unfair advantage on the VHI. Personally, I could never see why such Agencies have buildings operated and sited (possibly owned or leased) in expensive commercial areas instead of being sited in less expensive areas

and passing the cost savings to the consumers and therefore being more competitive. Indeed, many years ago before I entered the political area I wrote to the Dept of Health urging them to ensure that its monoply in the Health care market was examined. CARE AND REPAIR PROGRAMME MINOR REPAIRS SERVICE
By Tony Kehoe
Due to the success of our initial programme in Blackrock, Ballintemple and Ballinlough, and recently in Douglas and Crosshaven we are planning to extend the programme in 2009 to Bishopstown , Carraigtwohill and Mahon. Since our start-up in 2007 our volunteers have completed over 250 jobs and committed over 1000 hrs to our community Cork Care and Repair uses a pool of trustworthy volunteers and handypersons to carry out minor repairs for older people. The service is free; you only pay for the materials used (though voluntary donations are welcome). All our volunteers are insured and security vetted. The programme is run in association with Age Action Ireland. If you are 65+ years of age, and have a small repair job which would enhance your quality of life, give us a call. Brief outline on the origins of Cork Care and Repair Living in Cork, I regularly visit my mother who, happily continues to survive on her own in Dublin, at the grand age of 89. Without thinking I would throw my toolbox into the car. I found that a couple of small jobs, which would take only a couple of hours, were hugely significant for my mother, helping her to feel secure and adding to her quality of life. In talking it out with a few friends, in Cork, we decided to set up a small group of volunteers in Ballintemple in 2007 . Although there was a great demand for our service we were concerned about not being insured. About this time I became aware of Care and repair in Dublin, who were connected with Age Action. They solved our problem as they had a well developed process and could offer us security clearances for the volunteers and we could continue our work under their Insurance arrangements. From there Cork Care and Repair took off and though we have spread to a few areas of Cork city, yet we are still scratching the surface of the need which we know exists in City and County. We want to see this service spread to every village and town in Munster. Gerry and Pat, in Mahon, are typical of our Volunteers who approach all client jobs with a sunny disposition and a desire to help with their DIY experience. Many of our volunteers like Gerry and Pat are active retirees who along with their practical skills find that their life experience helps them empathize with and respect the wonderful people we come into contact with in our work. All our volunteers agree that we get every bit as much out of meeting the older folk and hearing their fascinating stories and hope we give as good back in the services we offer. HEADACHES AND NECK PAIN FINDING THE REAL CAUSE Some headache sufferers experience headaches so frequently and for so long that they begin to think it must be normal for them. CAT scans of the head in search of the cause frequently come up negative. Treatment usually ends up being some form of pain-killing drug, which can lead to dangerous side effects without ever really addressing the cause of the problem. The cause of these headaches is often overlooked because much of the pain can actually be referred from the neck. When I perform an examination, I often find that the patient may also suffer from neck pain, neck restriction, tight cervical (neck) muscles, muscular trigger points, postural imbalances, and sometimes arm pain. X-rays often reveal that the natural spinal curve and alignment of the vertebrae have been lost. When nerves in your spine get pinched, they alert you with pain. The relationship between such misalignments of the neck and headaches is so common that it is even given its own category: cervicogenic headaches. Sometimes patients with the above-mentioned neck problems don’t experience headache symptoms at all. Conversely, a patient may experience headaches only, without any form of neck discomfort. The pain pattern for each individual person depends on where exactly the nerve pressure in their body lies. This is why symptoms can be so misleading and why so many pain sufferers never get any answers. I have personally witnessed hundreds of patients being freed from headaches, migraines and neck pain—naturally, without medications. If these problems sound familiar to you or someone you know, one consultation with a Doctor of Chiropractic who understands may change the rest of your/ their life.

Hair Talk By Trudi of Artisan
Holiday hair Its that time of year again, the sun is shining and summer holidays are lurking around the corner. Bags are packed, sun lotion ready, but have you thought about protecting your hair? We all know the sun is damaging on our skin but we seem to forget it’s doing the same damage to our hair. So if you want to protect those luscious red locks from fading or golden tresses from bleaching follow these easy steps to turn your holiday hair nightmare into a holiday dream;
We are always recommended to wear a hat in the sun but its quite difficult when it gets too hot and you’re in and out of the pool, simply spray Kerastase soleil micro-voile protector in your hair as this protects the hair from uv rays and chlorine re-apply through out the day as you would your sun screen. Cleanse your hair every evening with kerastase soleil Bain après soleil. This is an anti-damaging shampoo with a UV filter that protects coloured hair. After you have cleansed your hair and want to style it for a night out, use kerastase soleil defense ultime. Smooth through the mid-lengths
and ends to tame those rebellious locks and style as always. This will also leave your hair colour looking radiant. Now all that’s left to do is get on that plane and have fun with hair that looks and feels great in the sun.
Tip of the week, You wouldn’t go out in the sun without factor on your skin, so don’t forget to protect your hair!!!

Migraines Migraines are chronic headaches that can cause significant pain for hours or even days. Symptoms can be so severe that all you can think about is finding a dark, quiet place to lie down. Some migraines are preceded or accompanied by sensory warning symptoms or signs (auras), such as flashes of light, blind spots or tingling in your arm or leg. A migraine is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Although there's no cure, medications can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. The right medicines combined with self-help remedies and lifestyle changes make a tremendous difference.
Symptoms A typical migraine attack produces some or all of these signs and symptoms: • Moderate to severe pain, which may be confined to one side of the head or may affect both sides • Head pain with a pulsating or throbbing quality • Pain that worsens with physical activity • Pain that interferes with your regular activities • Nausea with or without vomiting • Sensitivity to light and sound
When untreated, a migraine typically lasts from four to 72 hours, but the frequency with which headaches occur varies from person to person. You may have migraines several times a month or much less frequently.
Causes Although much about the cause of migraines isn't understood, genetics and environmental factors seem to both play a role. Whatever the exact mechanism of the headaches, a number of things may trigger them. Common migraine triggers include: • Hormonal changes in women. • Foods. • Stress. • Sensory stimuli. • Changes in wake-sleep pattern. • Physical factors. • Changes in the environment. • Medications. Choosing a strategy to manage your migraines depends on the frequency and severity of your headaches, the degree of disability your headaches cause, and your other medical conditions. If you suffer from migraine attacks and would like more information on migraines and how to manage them, call Garvan Lynch at Lynch’s Pharmacy 4366923.

Home & Garden
Trees, shrubs and Roses As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden- but there might be something. If not this week maybe next week.
Soil moisture has been adequate to keep young trees growing, but check new plants. It is time to clip hedges of all kinds before the wood gets tough. Any heavy cutting back should be left until the start of the season next year. Roses have suffered plenty of blackspot disease with the warm spells shrivelling the diseased leaves.
Flowers Containers of all kinds will need frequent watering, even daily if the weather is hot and dry. While it increases the work load, warm weather also improves the results from flowers in pots. Most of them need warm weather to perform to their best. Feeding is also essential and can be given every third or fourth watering.
Lawns Lawns are generally looking good. Soil moisture levels have fallen but rain has arrived before the effects started to show on the grass. If a lawn is pale or yellowish, it probable could do with feeding: lawns need to be feed at least twice a year, taking the spring feed as the first, most need a second one now. Feeding at this time can be a bit tricky because it will be counter-productive if the weather turns dry.
Greenhouse and House Plants Take cutting of all kinds, especially roses and clematis now. Spray a grapevine if it shows mildew to keep the fungus of the tiny grapes. Continue watering and feeding greenhouse Plants. Be especially careful to water plants in pots or grow-bags regularly. These can easily dry out. Train and side shoot tomatoes and cucumbers.
Fruit & Vegetables There has been quite a lot of potatoe blight and control should be kept up, especially for main crop potatoes. Remove vegetables that have gone over because of the warm weather. There has been good growth of sweet corn, which likes heat. Make some late sowings of lettuce and radishes.

Demand for Action on Heroin increases following another suspected death
Crossword
Sinn Féin Cllr. Jonathan O Brien The call for immediate action on the growing Heroin epidemic is gathering steam following the death of another young man yesterday (Sunday) from a suspected Heroin overdose. Sinn Féin Cllr. Jonathan O Brien states “Reports of another death from a suspected Heroin overdose sadly reached me this afternoon. I received a number of calls from the residents of a local community in the North West area informing me of the death. People are now demanding action be taken before any more young men and women die from Heroin. People are on the brink of public marches and protests to tackle this growing problem. In the past we have marched on dealers homes and publicly named them and we are not ruling out these options again in the future as part a holistic approach to Heroin in Cork City. This is the third suspected Heroin death in two weeks from the same area of the City and people are growing increasingly frustrated at the lack of a response from a wide range of agencies. Today (Monday) I will be asking for a suspension of standing orders at the Council meeting in City Hall to discuss the alarming number of deaths from Heroin. I, along with my Sinn Féin colleagues in Council, will be demanding that action is taken now rather than later. I will be proposing an emergency meeting of the Joint Policing Committee to take place this week to address the problem as a first step in formulating a holistic response. We in Sinn Féin will also be organising a series of meetings in communities across the city over the coming weeks to start organising a response from communities to the scum who are dealing Heroin. People are dying weekly now and will continue to die unless everyone starts working together. ”

Brainteazer Last Week’s Teazer.
Last Week’s Answer
After a long and arduous journey your ship reaches the sea which is your destination. However there is no water to be seen anywhere. In fact there never was any water and you knew that perfectly well before you set out. So why did you navigate your ship to this sea ?
Your ship is a space ship and the sea is one of the seas on the moon.
This Week’s Teazer. A man and his wife were driving through town late at night and the car broke down. The man had to get help but was nervous about leaving his wife alone. However there was absolutely no question of her coming too. Eventually he told her to lock all the doors and wait for him to return. Under no circumstances whatever was she to let anyone else into the car. The wife did as she was told, but, even so when the man returned to the locked car his wife was entertaining a stranger. What had happened ?

In The Loop with Peter Bowles
Boyzone deliver at the Marquee Clozure, a Dublin based four piece were the warm up act for Boyzone, they played for about a half hour. They performed covers of Chris Brown’s “With You” and One Republic’s “Apologize”. I thought they lacked flare and energy, they certainly failed to get the crowd going. The wana-be boy band chose songs that were well outside their live vocal range, songs like “Cry Me A River” by Justin Timberlake, this crucial error made them sound like teenage girls singing karaoke at a sleep over. They couldn’t hit the notes and even in between songs they seemed hesitant and amature when trying to speak to the crowd. Finishing with a cover of Neyo’s “Closer” I felt in conclusion that their set list didn’t impress overall, it was mellow and sadly not within their capabilities. Boyzone came on stage bang-on 9pm. Standing at the top of a set of steps with five showgirls in front of them, certainly grabbing all available attention, descending the steps as they sung “Picture Of You” and “Father And Son”. The crowd lapped it up, showing their satisfaction with cheering and foot stomping. Off they went for the first of many costume changes, returning to sing classics “Take My Breath Away” and “Its Only Words”. After that all but Stephan Gately left the stage, the spotlight found its resting place on his baby face, he begun to talk about how Boyzone are working on a new album for early release next year and he went on to pay tribute to the late Michael Jackson. After the short chat with the crowd he burst into song, performing a lively cover of Beyonce’s hit “Single Ladies”, towards the end he ran off leaving the back up dancers to sing a chorus or two while the second costume change of the night was completed. The lads then came out adorned in yellow jackets and white pants, Freddie Mercury’s 1986 Wembley outfit. They sung the first minute of “Bohemian Rhapsody” before going straight into “I Want To Break Free”. After which “Under Pressure” was sung with Keith adding a quick rap extract of Vanilla Ice’s tune “Ice Ice Baby”. Other songs in the Medley included “We Will Rock You”, “Radio Ga Ga” and “It’s A Kind Of Magic”. They finished on the more upbeat part of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Ronan Keating then emerged in a sleek suit holding an electric guitar. He talked to the crowd for a few moments, thanking them for making his “Songs For My Mother” number one
back in March and thanking the other lads for giving him the support. He sang his version of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time”, from the album, and dedicated it to Michael Jackson. He left the stage as the dancers reappeared to perform a routine to a drum instrumental by the band, during which, you guessed it, another costume change took place! Out they came to rock the place with “When The Going Gets Tough” and “Better”. Keith Duffy remained on stage after these, mentioning how it was the first time in 10 years they had played Cork and that they will definitely be back. He went on to tell the crowd about how many men are now attending their gigs and how happy he is to see the masculine faces, finishing with “Cork is the real capital”, cant argue with him there! After “Can‘t Stop Thinking About You” it was Shane’s turn to have his moment, engulfed in a Cork flag he asked where all the single women were, obviously met by a deafening wave of screams. He talked about how Boyzone got started and that “Love Me For A Reason” was a huge track for them, with that they sung it along with “No Matter What”. They then left the stage only to return a short while later to finish the night with a bang, “Life Is A Rollercoaster” and “Different Beat”, being their weapons of choice. They finished up the gig by promising to finished their album in 6months and hopefully return to play Pairc Ui Chaoimh. With that the house lights came on and I got a tap on the shoulder, a woman had spotted my notebook and made her way over to make sure I made note of how brilliant they were, she told me how she is still a fan after her kids got her into them years ago, she told me she was Norine Ryan from Grange, a local and a regular reader, well worth the mention!

Douglas GAA U11 Hurlers The U11 hurlers had a good win over Bishopstown at Douglas on Monday evening. In a well contested game played in sunshine Douglas came out on top with some great performances throughout the team. Best for Douglas on the night were Stephen O’Sullivan, Colin O’Brien, Colin O’Gadhra and Cian Daly. The match was special for another reason as it was Eoin Brennan’s last game for the U11’s as he heads off shortly to live in New York with his family, the very best of luck to the Brennan’s from all at Douglas GAA.

Douglas GAA – Clare re-writes the History Books. There have been many players in the history of the GAA that have won both hurling and football All Ireland medals, and some have even done so in the same year, but I believe you would struggle to find anyone who has won two All Ireland medals in just 8 days. Douglas girl Clare Shine has done just that and again rewritten GAA history Books, Clare travelled to Tullamore with the Douglas Camogie team and won a camogie All Ireland Féile medal in a very hard fought final against Dublin side St. Vincent’s, Douglas won this match by a mere two points with Clare scoring an incredible 7 points. The Following Sunday she went on to win another All Ireland medal this time playing with the U14 Cork ladies football team who defeated Galway in a thrilling game with Clare scoring 2 goals and 2 points, this is an incredible acheivement for any player and especially a player who has only just turned 14 years of age.

An Post deliver team title at National Championships Cork's O'Brien third for An Post team The An Post Sean Kelly team’s David O’Loughlin and Páidí O’Brien put in a tremendous performance at Sunday's National Championships in Dunboyne, Co. Meath, with the An Post duo finishing second and third respectively as the five-man squad claimed the overall team title. Three-time Nationals winner, David O’Loughlin (’04, ’05, ’07), came into the championships on the back of some great form on the road, but the Mayo native was piped at the finish by the impressive Nicholas Roche to deny O’Loughlin a fourth National title. Páidí O’Brien finished in third place behind team member O’Loughlin, to ensure two An Post team members would be on the podium and that the Belgian based Irish squad would claim the overall team accolade. Ronan McLaughlin finished in sixth place overall and was runner up in the U23 category. “Second and third is a good result,” An Post team manager Kurt Bogaerts admitted. “We did everything that we could so it was a perfect job really as there was a lot of pressure on us to perform. “We did not win but we are not too disappointed as we gave everything and I’m very proud of the team. Roche is a top rider and he probably came into the race with a little better form and this showed on the day. “We had O’Loughlin second; Paidi third and Ronan in sixth but second in the U23 group too; which is a very good result. We were the best team on the day, so I’m vey happy. Banteer native Paidí O’Brien was runner-up to David O’Loughlin in 2007, and took silver again last year, but the former U18 national
Douglas G.A.A. News The Junior B hurlers continued their impressive form when they defeated Belgooly 1-16 to 1-9. Douglas started in whirlwind fashion scoring 0-4 without reply. The South East team got the next three scores but Douglas finished strongly to lead 0-10 to 0-5 at the break. Playing with the wind Belgooly got two early points after the resumption. However, Douglas dug deep and scored some excellent points to fashion a very positive result. Brian Kenneally is showing great form as is newcomer Tom Ryan. One very positive aspect of the game was the spread of the players getting onto the score sheet, with no great dependency on any particular player. Last Sunday afternoon the senior footballers bowed out of the championship following Doheny’s win on a scoreline of 0-8 to 0-7. The game was played in Cloughduv and the greasy conditions made it difficult for both sides. Doheny’s were deserving winners while Brian Boyle, Frank Tobin and John Farrell impressed for Douglas.
champion was happy with today’s third place. “I’m happy with third as Roche was excellent today and deserved to win, and O’Loughlin is a top rider too and was on form today,” O’Brien said. “This is the fourth year in a row I’ve been on the podium so it’s a good achievement and shows some consistency. “The team did as good a job as we could really overall, and Nicholas (Roche) is a great rider so you have to give credit where it’s due. • Paidi O'Brien a member of the An Post Sean We’ll take heart from Kelly Cycling Team. An Post Sean Kelly Cycling this and look forward Team training camp photocall, Calpe, Spain. to the Tour of Ireland Picture credit: Pat Murphy/ SPORTSFILE in August when we’re back again in Ireland.” Ronan McLaughlin was a few places further back in sixth position but also managed second place in the under-23 group, and the Donegal man was happy with a podium finish. “To be on the podium is great and the team rode really well today,” McLaughlin said. “It was a good day overall for the team and the runner up spot for me personally in the under-23 is a bonus and it’s nice to be able to repay the faith Kurt and Sean (Kelly) have put in me.

Douglas Camogie Our second U11 b game of the season was against a very strong St. Finbarr’s team. After a very fast start to the game the Barr’s took the lead with a very good goal. Our midfield pair of Megan Walsh and Eadion Downey got us back into the game with a brilliant display of hurling, which resulted in Denise Harrington scoring a great goal to bring us back on level terms. Just before half time Katie Brennan and Jill Donegan played really well to create a chance for Ruth Hickey to score a goal at a vital time for us to lead on the stroke at half time. The Barr’s came out flying at the start of the second half and our back line of Niamh Daly ,Aine Buckley and Ellie Devine had to be at their best to keep them out. Sarah Bryant in goal was again in great form with some great saves. Megan Daly then sent in a great ball for corner forward Tara Costello to score our third goal with a fierce pull on the ball to rap up the game. St. Finbarr’s never gave up and pushed us the whole way so well done to all the girls as a big number turned up on the night and every one played their part in this very exciting game, well done to all the team. Lord Mayor seeks changes to Bonfire Night
Family Day The Family Day was a great success on Sunday despite the weather conditions and the club would like to especially thank Francis McEveney for all the hard work he put into making this day a great treat for all the Kids. Francis organised all the events and he would like to thank all the sponsors especially Eurospar, The Local Scout Troop under Ken Sutherland, the pitch committee under Ned Harrington who had the grounds immaculate, the ladies who contributed cakes , and all who helped supervising on the day. There was two competitive matches in Under 10 Camogie and Under 8/7s Hurling against Carrigaline on the day and Francis presented medals to all the players at the end of each game. Players to shine for Passage in the Hurling match were Tomas Harrington, Jack Dorgan, Eddie O'Mahony, Eoin Higgins, Sean Harrington, Brian Jennings and Shane Brosnan. The fe 13 team would like to wish Conor Harrington a speedy recovery after his recent illness.
The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Dara Murphy, is seeking a review of Bonfire Night practices in Cork city. The Lord Mayor said “Given the events of Bonfire Night on Tuesday 23rd June, 2009, with the incidents right across the city, I propose that the future of bonfires around city be discussed at the next meeting of the Recreation, Amenity and Culture Strategic Policy Committee and referred to the next meeting of the Recreation, Amenity and Culture Functional Committee. I have already asked that a report from the City Manager on the damage done to public open spaces and a cost of cleaning up of bonfires be submitted to Recreation, Amenity and Culture SPC. Also, I asked for same reports from Cork City Fire Department and Senior Cork City Gardaí. It is my opinion that the practice of Bonfire Night as occurred last Tuesday 23rd June, 2009 cannot be allowed to re-occur.”

Sheep’s Head Wins Award for Tourism Excellence

EU competition showcases the best of what Ireland has to offer Sheep’s Head in Bantry today received their award for “European Destination of Excellence 2009 – Tourism and Protected Areas” from Dr. Martin Mansergh, T.D. Minister of State. Sheep’s Head were crowned the Irish winner of the “European Destination of Excellence” (EDEN) competition which is funded and organised by Fáilte Ireland and the European Union. The competition was designed for destinations that have developed the tourism potential of their protected areas in a sustainable manner. Sheep’s Head faced stiff competition from the other four finalists – Ballyhoura in Counties Limerick and Cork, Slieve League in South Donegal, Erris in North West Mayo and the Greenbox in the North West (including Leitrim, parts of Cavan, Sligo, Donegal and Monaghan). The adjudicators were extremely impressed with the energy and enthusiasm of the local groups and the variety of protected areas that were promoted. Mary Stack, Environment Officer at Fáilte Ireland believes that the Sheep’s Head is a worthy winner – “The community knowledge, promotion and upholding of their local area was considered outstanding, and in the end led to success for Sheep’s Head in this competition. She continued “An inextricable link between tourism and the protected areas was demonstrated during the site visit to the Peninsula, and it is obvious that tourism has been developed both upon and with full consideration of the sensitivities of these protected areas. The local natural assets of the area have been presented as an integral part of local tourism.” The Sheep’s Head Peninsula is located in West Cork and offers a long distance walking route including the Sheep’s Head Way, which traverses a number of protected areas such as Special Protection Areas, which are protected for birdlife. It also has a wealth of wildlife habitats many of which are protected as candidate Special Areas of Conservation, and offers visitors loop walks, coastal, hill top, cliff side and river walks, angling, cycling, local food produce and much more. As this year’s winner, the tourism destination will receive an additional boost to their ongoing effort to attract visitors. Sheep’s Head will be the subject of a specially commissioned photo shoot and the local committee will receive €5,000 for business development support initiatives as well as a certificate of achievement from Fáilte Ireland. In addition, the EU will provide international promotion of Sheep’s Head, e-marketing opportunities and participation in an EU network of European Destinations of Excellence which will also raise the profile of the destination. EDEN is an EU-wide competition with two main aims. Firstly, it highlights the value, diversity and shared characteristics of European tourist destinations, and secondly, promotes destinations where the economic growth objective is pursued in such a way as to ensure the social, cultural and environmental sustainability of tourism. The success of Irish tourism is inextricably linked to the quality of our environment and widely seen to be a unique selling point of our destination. The tourism industry has long traded on Ireland’s clean green image and protecting the credibility of this image is important to ensure the sustainable development of the sector. Recent research shows that seven out of ten visitors choose Ireland because of our unspoilt environment and clean green image with eight out of ten people who stay in Ireland expressing satisfaction with our landscape and scenery. • Aisling and Aine from Bantry Rowing Club picyured at the Lee Rowing Club Midsummer Regatta last weekend.
