PARENTS AND CHILDREN LEFT IN LIMBO BY GAP IN LEGISLATION A LACK of appropriate legislation governing the payment of court maintenance orders are leaving lone parents and their children in limbo according to Deputy Deirdre Clune, Fine Gael TD for Cork South Central who says the new legislation addressing this matter needs to be implemented immediately. “Many parents have contacted my office expressing a concern for the fact that have been granted maintenance payment through the court system and now the person who is due to pay the maintenance is ignoring that court order. “These payments are charged through the courts, if a person can’t pay well then there’s a facility to renegotiate but the fact of the matter is that many people aren’t paying, won’t pay, and this gap in legislation needs to be addressed. “This gap in the legislation allows parents not to pay the court ordered maintenance and I am glad to see that the Minister has published legislation that will address that and there is now a threat of imprisonment if they don’t pay.” “I will be ensuring that this legislation is implemented as soon as possible because many parents are in limbo now and in turn it affects the payment they are getting from the department of social welfare in terms of their lone parent payment.”

I was driving the kids to school and was listening to Today FM on the radio when an advert came on about conserving Dublin water. I thought it was a joke. I could barely see the road for the rain. As I peered through my rain saturated windscreen with the wipers working at full speed, I laughed: the one thing that is plentiful and free in Ireland is water and they’re telling us to be careful with it. And now they want to re-introduce water rates to discourage us from wasting it. There are currently mini rivers of the stuff flowing past my front door, the garden has been no go zone for weeks
because it so soggy, bogs are moving in Kerry and there is flooding in Mallow and Limerick. We can’t contain it. It’s not like Australia where they suffer from droughts – we should be so lucky – because there’ll be plenty more tomorrow. Maeve Binchy once said that telling the world that you are writing a book is like going on a diet. You are setting up an expectation to all those that know you and if you get caught horsing into a doughnut, you get cries of, “But I thought you were on a diet” thus ruining the moment, and you feel ridiculous. At the risk of being ridiculous, three weeks ago I started the Stone Age Diet. I don’t know if that’s the official name for it but you only eat what the caveman ate i.e. all the meat you want with the fat trimmed

off – very picky those cavemen and plenty fruit, veg, nuts and seeds. I saw an article about it in one of the Sunday papers where the writer lost 13kg in three months. Unfortunately the article didn’t mention dairy products and I wonder did cavemen have cows back then and if they did, would they know how to milk them and make cheese and yogurt. I’ll give up anything but I must have milk in my tea. All baked products are off the menu. Nothing is allowed that was grown from a crop e.g. bagels, bread, muffins, cakes, potatoes and rice. Since these constituted 90% of my eating habits, I found the first week very hard as I simply had no energy. Michael Phelps, the American swimmer that won in all 14 gold medals in the Olympics, consumes 12,000 calories per day. For a breakfast alone, he has a stack of pancakes, a stack of toast and several eggs. How do you even begin to put that amount of food into your body but I remind myself whatever he’s having, I can’t have. Progress is slow, I have lost only four pounds in the three weeks since I’ve started but on the plus side, I’m never hungry and my energy levels are returning. What also helps is that I got a dog. I must have had a mid life crisis moment but I had this sudden urge to have a small, friendly form of life in the house other than my children.
And unlike my children, he doesn’t answer back or ask questions. The toilet training was fraught as I never had a dog before and failed to appreciate that puppies do it everywhere, all the time whether it’s on the grass, the kitchen floor or your best carpet. When he was ten weeks old, I dragged him out for his first walk. I wasn’t going far. It was only to the local shop and back but he went berserk when I put on the lead and refused to go beyond the front gate. Meanly, I dragged him about 20 yards and then gave up. Like Paris Hilton, I put him under my arm and carried him the rest of the way. Little dogs are like babies, they’re great for breaking the ice with strangers who stop to pat him. I’ve picked up great tips on how it’s important to let the dog know who is master and to tune into the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic channel. But the greatest benefit of all, apart from the enormous affection he gives, is the fact that he has to have his walk everyday otherwise, as the book says; he is liable to become badly behaved and difficult. Don’t we all! The odd feature about the ‘mixed’ weather we’ve been having is that as miserable as the day might be, the evenings are lovely and therefore perfect for this Cave-woman and her dog to go walkies.

LEARNER DRIVER PROPOSALS WELCOME BUT PRACTICAL DIFFICULTIES MUST BE OVERCOME The new proposals drawn up by the Road Safety Authority in relation to learner and inexperienced drivers are welcome in principle and will hopefully help to improve the quality of driving and reduce the number of accidents on our roads. However, there remain a number of important issues to be addressed to make the proposals effective. Young people make up a disproportionately large number of those either injured or killed on our roads and the changes to the supervision of learner drivers should help counter this worrying trend. The RSA’s measures for a more structured process for training, testing and licensing learner drivers should help new drivers overcome the challenges of modern driving such as dense city traffic and motorway driving. Having to meet strict new criteria including a number of hours supervised night driving, is an important change to the current system as it deals with elements of driving previously ignored during driver training. Other positive measures proposed a lowered alcohol limit for learner drivers as well as the Hazard Perception Test intended to reduce the number of traffic accidents involving learner drivers. However, the new proposals do create some serious problems particularly for many young people wishing to learn to drive. Not all homes have a family car and the new proposals would mean that many people would have to pay an instructor in a company car to accompany them while they accrue the required hours of supervision. It is estimated that 20 hours with a driving instructor could cost up to and above €700. The new compulsory period with a supervising driver could cost as much again. This could make learning to drive prohibitive for many young people especially those who don’t have access to a family car. The onus is now on the Government to explain how it plans to make provisions for those who will not be able to afford the additional costs these new measures create so that all young people can learn to drive in accordance with the law.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
If we have an aim in life we are more likely to hit the right mark, even if at times we are amused at some of our sanctimonious fantasies, without a target we are, in a personal sense of achievement, cancelling our presence. In writing poetry, we have everything, purpose, target and completion. It is two years since we last published a poem by Joe Mullen. At the time I stated he dared to be different, his poem this week enhances my point of view. Dealing with the complexities of the human psych is something we generally leave to psychotherapists and analysts but few people on this planet can have a more ‘hands on experience’ with human emotions and all its side effects and complications, than Joe Mullen. Yet Joe writes with all the rationality and maturity that is worthy of a true philosopher. Joseph T. Mullen of West Street, New York is a Private Investigator, a good family man with a family business, his history is the stuff of legends. To quote The New York Times “ Joe Mullen is not any Private Eye. He is the one who did the Trump case, the Mike Tyson case, worked for Johnny Carson and Linda Lavin”.
ANGER It comes without warning, like an early hot summer storm ... And departs with a whimper, yet it leaves behind its wake ... ill feeling, unsettling, personal damage ..... on both sides”, How do you prepare for its onslaught? Was there a hint of its coming? Anger rides the top wave and kindness sits in a reflecting pool.. . What can we do .... for ourselves and for others? Apologize, explain our side, forget situations, walk away or Maybe step back and reflect .... Think of the Good Times ... Was it worth it? Life is short .... Love is strong ... Think about it! © Joseph.T. Mullen Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

Brainteazer Last Week’s Teazer A man went to the garage to have an electrical fault on his car repaired. Unfortunately the mechanic was ill and therefore the work could not be done, determined not to waste his trip the man decided to put his car through the car wash. He closed the sun roof, retracted the radio aerial, drove the car into the tunnel and then got out and waited outside for the washing to begin. It was only
Last Weeks
when he pushed the button that the man began to bellow with rage. Why ? Last Week’s Answer He remembered too late why he had come in the first place – the electric winder on the drivers door was broken and the window was open.
This Week’s Teazer Victor Serebriakoff, International President of Mensa, once made up a poem about Hyperbolic Acid, a substance so corrosive that it would eat its way through anything. One day Sir Clive Sinclair, the inventor and UK Mensa Chairman, phoned his old friend with some stunning news. “Victor, you’ll never believe this but I have actually invented you Hyperbolic Acid! Stay where you are and I’ll dash round to your house with a flask of it right now”. Victor replaced the phone and chuckled to himself. How could he tell he was being teased ?

An Giota Gaeilge Le Liam Ó Móráin
Comharthaí Bhruachbhailte go hainís – Turasóirí amú! Don gcéad uair i mbliana (nó bhí cuma air nuair a fuaireas an glaoch gutháin) bhí cuairteoirí ar chathair Chorcaí caillte agus bhí treoir uatha. Anois cheapfá go mbeadh córas GPS acu agus leis nach mbeadh dua acu aon láthair a aimsiú Nó go mbeadh léarscáil tráthúil acu a chabhródh leo a láthair a aimsiú? Ach cé nach raibh córas GPS acu, agus cé go raibh léarscáil na cathrach acu, fós bhí deacrachtaí acu teacht ón Linn Dubh go dtí an Charraig Dhubh – ó thuaisceart na cathrach go hoir-dheisceart na cathrach! An cúis – ceal comharthaí sráide, easpa comharthaí cheantair, beagán comharthaí le treoir a léiriú idir bhruachbhailte na cathrach, gan aon mhíniú, treoracha nó leideanna ann a mhíneodh an córas aon-shlí sráide sa chathair. Agus seo do gcathair atá ar cheann den deich cathracha is ‘fearr’ de réir údaráis lucht molta taistil ar domhain!!!! Nuair a thagann cuairteoir ón iasacht chun fanacht linn agus nuair a luann siad na deacrachtaí seo, is é ár bhfreagra mar mhagadh ar stádas olc na gcomhartha sa chathair s’againne ná tuige go mbeadh comharthaí ann nuair is eol do Corcaígh, nó madra an bhaile, cá bhfuil siad, agus cén fáth go n-inseoimid an t-eolas seo do strainséirí? Ach mo bharúil nach ábhair greannmhar a thuilleadh é. Is cosúil nach bhfuil duine ar bith sa chomhairle cathrach nó sa chomhairle chontae ag smaoineamh ar an bhfadhb seo ó thaobh an strainséir de, dar liom. “Nuair a bhainimid ciorclán amháin amach, ag leanúint na comharthaí, abar, tá comhartha sa bhreis de dhíth chun sólás agus cinnteacht go bhfuil an casadh ceart tógtha againn, ach níl an cinnteacht seo ar fáil anseo, agus caillimid an méad sin ama”, dúirt na hAstrálaigh linn aréir. Ach nach bhfuil an fhadhb i bhfad níos mó ná seo? Dar liom go bhfuil. I Londain dom ar na mallaibh d’airigh mé go bhfuil an fhadhb seo réitithe go maith ag na húdaráis áitiúla, sa tslí is go bhfuil comharthaí áitiúla is sráide i bhfad níos soiléire acu anois, ná mar a bhíodh. In Ealing dom chonaic comharthaí thar chinn agus an-shimplí ann. Léirigh an comhartha sráide seo go raibh an taistealaí lonnaithe i gceantar áirithe, agus ar sráid áraithe, agus ansin thaispeáin an comhartha go raibh rogha sráideanna ar fáil ón casadh áraithe seo. Cabhraigh seo go mór liom mo cheann scríbe a bhaint amach – gan léarscáil nó gan córas GPS. Ní duine mé a aontaíonn go mór le haithris a dhéanamh ar gach rud Sasanach, ach b’fhéidir go bhfuil ceacht le foghlaim ag lucht déanamh is dáileadh comharthaí bóithre is ceantair bailte is bhruachbhailte sa tír seo ó chóras comhartha cathrach Londain. Gan amhras tá clú agus cáil le fada ar an bhFrainc as ucht a córas treoracha bóithre is bailte freisin – go speisialta nuair a cuireann siad ar an eolas thú go bhfuil baile sroichte agat, agus go bhfuil tú ag fágáil an bhaile. Is léir mar sin go bhfuil slite – córas comharthaí bóithre is bruachbhailte - níos fearr ar fáil ó thíortha éagsúla, go háraithe ó Shasana agus ón bhFrainc, agus gur fiú dúinn ceachtanna a fhoghlaim. Dar liom nach féidir le tionscal na turasóireachta in Éirinn faic a dhéanamh – is léir go bhfuil turasóirí á cailliúint agus leanfaidh seo ar aghaidh chomh fada is nach ndéanann na húdaráis cuí rud ar bith chun feabhas a chur ar fáil do na turasóirí seo! Amach anseo, b’fhéidir!

New Crosshaven Coast Guard Station Moves to Tender Stage Local Fianna Fáil T.D. Michael McGrath has welcomed the news that the planned new Coast Guard station in Crosshaven is to move to tender stage this month. Deputy McGrath has been in ongoing contact with Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey and Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW Martin Mansergh in relation to the project. “The OPW has confirmed to me that it is currently undertaking a prequalification process to select suitable contractors for the construction of the new Coast Guard station. “Tender documentation is in preparation and it is planned to seek tenders this month with a view to placing a contract in November 2010. “The Irish Coast Guard Service has confirmed that funding will be provided for this development, subject to a contract being placed before the end of November. It is therefore imperative that the tender process is managed efficiently and that a suitable contractor is appointed as soon as possible. “The members of the Crosshaven Coast Guard provide an outstanding service and do so in a voluntary capacity. They are to be commended for their dedication and commitment to the Coast Guard and the local community. They deserve to be working from a modern Coast Guard station, and I will continue to do everything I possibly can to make that a reality,” stated Deputy McGrath.

Congratulations to the Class of 2008 I congratulate the DCS Leaving Certificate class of 2008 on their excellent results in the Leaving Certificate examination. Leaving Certificate results day is one which most students remember for a long time. This year media reports on the results took precedence over a war between Russia and Georgia, the Beijing Olympics and problems in the Irish economy. This media circus puts great pressure on both students and parents. In getting a novel storyline the focus is often on the exceptional and the extreme - students with nine A grades and comments about the numbers doing honours mathematics and the sciences. These stories do not reflect the reality of the majority of students who achieve good solid results and gain sufficient points for their chosen course at Third Level. The results of the class of 2008 across the wide range of subjects studied at DCS show grade levels consistently above the national averages. Many of our students achieved points in the 500+ range with significant numbers over 550. The high percentage of students getting A grades is particularly
AT
gratifying. It was also good to see the support and friendship shown for each other when our students got their results. The true spirit of DCS was evident in the concern shown by our students that their friends also got the grades and points they were seeking. As the DCS class of 2008 deal with CAO offers I wish them every success in their further studies. You have completed one important stage in your education; you have grown from child to man in your years with us. Looking at the man who leaves us it is difficult for us to remember the little boy who came to DCS six years ago! As one stage in the life of our students and school life ends another begins with the start of another academic year. I urge all our students to follow the example of the class of 2008 in working to achieve the highest grades in your examinations in the year ahead.

What is TB? Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection mostly found in the lungs but which can affect any part of the body such as the brain, lymph glands and bones. Only TB of the lungs or throat may be infectious.
How is it caught? When someone with TB of the lungs coughs, the germs can get into the air in small droplets and other people can breathe them in. People most likely to catch TB are those who live in the same house or flat as the person with TB. What is the difference between latent TB infection and TB disease? With latent TB the TB germs are in the body but are not active. The person is well and cannot pass the germs on to other people. With TB disease the TB germs are active in the body and the person may pass the germs on to others if the disease is in the lungs or the throat. How does the doctor know I have latent TB infection? The doctor or nurse will know from the results of various tests which may include a blood test or a skin test and/or a chest x-ray. Should I avoid certain food or other medicines while I am taking my TB medicine? No, you can eat anything you like. But you
should avoid drinking excessive alcohol. It is very important that you tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines. Are medicines for TB safe? As with all medicines, there may be side effects. Some side effects are minor, others may be more serious. Information about the different tablets and their side effects are available from clinic staff. It is important to remember that not taking the treatment will mean you could become very unwell with TB. Your doctor or nurse will arrange some tests before you start your treatment. Why do I need to take the TB medicine for so long? TB germs are killed very slowly. It takes at least 3 months for the medicine to kill all the germs. The length of the treatment depends on what medicines you are given. You must continue to take your medicine until all the TB germs are dead, even though you have no symptoms of TB disease. How can I be sure I do not already have TB disease? Because you do not have symptoms typical of
TB disease: Cough which lasts for weeks Coughing up blood Fever (high temperature) Sweating, especially at night Unexplained weight loss Fatigue(lack of energy) Swollen glands Why do I have to take treatments when I have no symptoms? If you have latent TB infection, Although you do not have symptoms now, there is an increased risk that you will develop active TB in the future. Treatment of latent TB infection before it develops into active TB disease, decreases this risk and involves taking fewer medicines than if you have active TB. How often should I take my medicine? The medicine needs to be taken everyday. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If you forget and its time for the next dose, miss out on the one you forgot. Do not take double the dose.

Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman
I had lots of enquiries from older people about getting small jobs done which they find very difficult to do themselves. If you are over 65 years of age you can contact the Cork Care and Repair team on 1890-369-369. If you live alone and need a pair of willing hands to change a light bulb, put up shelves, take down or put up curtains or to do a variety of other tasks that an older person may find difficult to do. The service is free of charge. You only have to pay the cost of any materials involved. Often people do not know how to go about getting reliable tradesmen, Care and Repair will endeavour to supply the names of trustworthy tradespeople from both sexes. The recent announcement from the government of a scheme of community work for people claiming jobseekers benefit is a welcome one as making a contribution to your community cannot be a bad thing, work, especially community work
allows people to give something back to society. It also provides opportunities for people to meet others in the same situation and potentially pool their talents. Of course it is not the perfect scheme but it is certainly better than emigrating or sitting at home all day which can be soul destroying. 10,000 people will roll with this scheme in the next few months. We have to believe it can work. We now have 19 couples who met and married whilst working in either Morrogits or St Patricks Mills. Douglas Post are sponsoring a prize for whoever comes up with the highest number. Liam McCarthy is doing a film on the Mills and its people and also of Douglas in general. He hopes to have it ready for Christmas. We will keep the competition open until December so keep the names coming. If anyone can do better than 19 couples give me a call on 4363867. A reminder also of the Golden
Couples who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year. Douglas Village Shopping Centre would like to be part of this celebration, centre manager Bartosz Mieziela will welcome couples from all communities in Cork for this special and unique occasion. In days gone by I don’t believe we had so many couples reaching this magnificent milestone who look wonderful and enjoy life to the full. You can leave your names with Kathleen at the information desk or give me a call on 4363867.

Midleton Food Festival set to sizzle your taste buds Excitement is in the air in anticipation of the Midleton Food and Drink Festival which takes place on Saturday, 11th September. Plans are well underway for the event which will provide brilliant entertainment for the entire family. Festival Project Manager, Count John McCormack, grandson of the world famous Irish tenor, promises a great day out. “The Festival is a fantastic showcase for the wonderful variety of locally produced foods and crafts in East Cork. It is now, one of the premier food events in Munster. There is a great programme on hand for 2010 and visitors can enjoy delicious tastings from the amazing selection of food stalls or simply soak up the atmosphere!” With entertainment is in his blood, John, the proprietor of South Coast Coffee, also knows what is important for a Festival such as this. “A key ingredient to the success of the Midleton Food Festival is the diversity of events taking place, fun and entertainment is central. The Festival is for all ages and for people from all walks of life. Children can really enjoy the day, with puppet shows, balloon artists and jugglers – while grandparents will be in hysterics watching the Waiters Race, when our local waiters battle it out to win, while precariously balancing trays full of drinks!”
The Midleton Food and Drink Festival brings a great influx of visitors into the town. With over 50 fresh food and drink stalls, it presents a wonderful selection of tastes and aromas. Wallis’ Town Hall Bar will feature a ‘Harvest Music Festival’ and families can enjoy ‘Agri Aware’s Mobile Farm Experience.’ There will be ‘Composting & Grow Your Own Demonstrations’ (where you can even get your own allotment!). Other features will include craft displays, a window dressing competition and a children’s story time at the Midleton Library. There will also be a busking competition, cookery demonstrations in Distillery Lane and the ever popular East Cork Camera Club’s exhibition. One of the highlights of the Festival is the ‘Jameson Experience Cocktail Competition’– where bartenders from all the pubs, hotels and restaurants in the area will compete for grand prizes, showing their superb juggling skills. The main sponsor of the Festival is Market Green. “We are most grateful for the support of Andrew McVea and Market Green,” said John. “It would be very difficult to stage an event of

Market Green are having a special celebration for the Festival and will be turning their green area into a hub of entertainment. The ‘Market Green Family Play and Picnic Area’ will see ice cream vendors, bouncing castles, face painters and fun for all the family – something not to be missed.” The Festival is also backed up by a number of groups including Midleton and Area Chamber
of Commerce, Midleton Town Council, South and East Cork Area Development (SECAD Ltd), the Jameson Experience at the Old Midleton Distillery, Dairygold and Bausang Construction. ‘Tomatoes and oregano make it Italian, wine and tarragon make it French, sour cream makes it Russian, lemon and cinnamon make it Greek, Soy sauce makes it Chinese – and Midleton just makes food great!’ (Adapted quote from Alice May Brock)

The handling on the Speed Triple is great and will go where ever you want it to with pin point accuracy. It really comes into its own around town being naturally very light because of the 3 cylinder across the frame engine making it such an easy bike to change direction. The radial mounted Nissin brakes instill great confidence for the rider and are nice and progressive. A bonus with the Triple R is the fully adjustable front and rear suspension giving the rider plenty of feed back so you can feel what the bike is doing. Jarlath first stood on stage in 2004 when he was selected as a finalist in the BBC and Channel 4 new comedy awards at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival……Although he failed to win the competitions that introduced the world to Tommy Tiernan, Dylan Moran and David O'Doherty he quickly became a hot ticket at the Fringe.. His debut solo Edinburgh show "Nobody Knows. Jarlath Regan" earned rave reviews from the Scottish press ("The wittiest, funniest lines you will ever see" Edinburgh Hairline) and was the subject of a documentary series on TV3. His 2008 show was a sell-out and earned him more stars than a milky way. In 2006 / 2007 he supported Ardal O'Hanlon, Jason Byrne and David O'Doherty their tours of Ireland. Jarlath wowed the expectant crowds and earned him an invitation to take part in the Kilkenny Cat Laughs Comedy Festival and the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal where he appeared alongside Tommy Tiernan in the first ever "Best of Irish" televised gala. The Castletreasure Boys had the lions share of possesssion but had difficulty in picking out the right passes to penetrate the Lakewood defence who packed the area. However, Corinthians drew level when David O'Sullivan found the net on 15minutes after good work from Bryan Hill down the right. Eoin Murphy put Corinthians ahead on the 50th minute and it was no more than they deserved. Soon afterwards Alex Chandler & Dylan Ward had to leave the park prematurely after a clash of heads that left both a bit shaken. Corinthians

Both sides were short some regulars and took the opportunity to give first games to a number of players new to the senior ranks. Scores came in rapid succession throughout. Cork Con’s top scorer Richard Lane opened his account with a second minute try and conversion, but Dolphin struck back with a try by Kyle O’Dwyer converted by Barry Keeshan. Dolphin suffered an early loss as Cormac O’Flynn was hospitalised after a clash of heads. Happily he recovered after treatment. Keeshan kicked a second penalty for Dolphin, but Lane added two penalties and converted former UCC player Sean Scanlon’s try to leave Constitution 20-10 ahead at the break. Richard Lane kicked his third penalty after 48 minutes and Frank Cogan got over for a try from a 5-metre scrum in the 56th minute. Keeshan had a penalty for Dolphin two minutes later, but Sean Scanlon got the best try of the game in the 63rd minute, when he finished off a move started by Robert Clune’s incisive run down the right-hand touchline; Richard Lane carried on the move and placed Scanlon for the touchdown. Dolphin had the final score with a try by Chris Rowe, converted by Keeshan, to leave Constitution well in command at the final whistle. Munster Branch President, Cyril Fitzgerald, was on hand to present the trophy to Cork Constitution captain, Frank Cogan, and medals to the team members.

Tramore Athletic Umbro U12 Division 2 Tramore Athletic 4 Castleview 0 The Tramore Athletic U12s began their new league season in hugely impressive form with a fully deserved four nil victory at home to Castleview on Saturday morning. Tramore's impressive victory was built on the back of the rock solid performances of Tramore's back four and goalkeeper who repelled all Castleview attacks and Tramore used this platform to devastating effect by launching swift and incisive counter attacks to grab each of their goals. Andrew Turner was in deadly form in front of goal and he grabbed a brace for Tramore with two deft finishes. Man of the match Colm Kiely rounded off the move of the match to grab a goal his all round display fully merited. Alan O'Reilly completed the scoring for Tramoe in fine style with a sweet strike which arrowed into the bottom corner of the
net to round off a fantastic start to the season for Tramore. Umbro U14 Division 3 Tramore Athletic 6 Wilton United 1 The Tramore Athletic U14s roared out of the blocks on the first day of their league season with comprehensive six goals to one victory over Wilton United at Tramore Park on Saturday afternoon. The team was the star of the show for Tramore as the goals and the impressive performances were shared right throughout the team. Tramore's goalscorers in this fantastic opening day performance were courtesy of Dylan Black, Ruairi Moynihan, Ryan McCarthy, Pierce O'Keeffe, Emmet McAuliffe and Liam Madden. Liam Madden and Olan Murphy were in tremendous form throughout the game and played a telling role in each of Tramore's goals and in this most impressive performance.

G.A.A. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington Unhelpful Comments Former Cork goalkeeper and respected coach Billy Morgan is credited in De Paper with saying that he spoke to one of the Cork selectors last week who said Cork would not win an all-Ireland title without Masters. Yes, James Masters has been and still is a good player but were the comments necessary or any way helpful in the run-up to the all-Ireland final? First and foremost the team management is under enough pressure and I feel Morgan, a former manager would not be pleased to hear such comments if the roles were reversed. Cork football has struggled over the past years to win Sam; perhaps it is now time to show our support in the quest to land the all-Ireland title. Minor Football The all-Ireland minor football semi-final between Cork and Galway was high-scoring, (8 goals) exciting and even nailbiting at times. It produced some great goals and at times displayed poor defending. In spite of conceding five goals Cork won. We were nine points down with sixteen minutes remaining and pulled off a fantastic comeback. I expect the hard men would say that modern football should not be played in such manner – particularly the defending but to me, for entertainment value alone it was game of the year; it was the third match this year that Cork won by one point. The Cork players displayed great determination, guts and most of all, skills. Stand-out players for me were Hallissy, Hurley and Cahalane. Well done to everyone concerned – next up Tyrone who are an excellent outfit. Best of luck to Douglas man David Hanrahan and the Cork team. Kilkenny vs. Cork Kilkenny got the better of Cork in the all-Ireland intermediate hurling final. The Cats got off to a fine start scoring 1 – 2 without reply. Cork slowly but surely reeled 32 - Thur 09 Sep '10
them in and it was nip and tuck for the remainder of the opening half. With the ability to win primary ball the Noresiders were a point ahead at the interval. The second half continued in a similar vein with the sides level on five occasions. Kilkenny then opened up a five-point gap and Cork had a player sent off. The Rebels responded with a goal but Kilkenny scored 1 – 2 during three minutes of injury time. The Cork forwards did not perform as a unit on this occasion, though to be fair, throughout the year they showed great character – especially against Limerick and Waterford. Well done to the Douglas duo, Barry Fitzgerald and Mark Harrington. Down and Kildare There was a wonderful contrast of colour in the red and black of Down and the white of Kildare in the all-Ireland football semi-final. Kildare were well on top at the early stages of the game but did not make enough of their chances. They were robbed of a legitimate point by an umpire who waved for a wide ball. Down were awarded a goal which was clearly a square ball. This was an interesting game of football with great movement, particularly by the Down forwards Coulter, Clarke and Hughes. After the break, Down put a lot of players behind the ball and counter attacked. They looked to be the better team but Kildare never gave up. The Mournemen deserved to win. For the record they have never lost an all-Ireland final – 5 wins out of 5. Challenges and Hurling Falloff There are many challenges facing the G.A.A. at this time, some from other sports that have huge television audiences. Many are global sports and are seen far and wide throughout the world. Another problem which affects our sport greatly is emigration. We are living in tough times and many of our young people must leave home to seek employment abroad. Large numbers of these people are lost to the organisation for long periods, perhaps for ever. I believe the greatest obstacles come from within the association. Life has become increasingly
Douglas Hall Underage by Finbarr Buckley U-11 Division One Fermoy 1 ; Douglas Hall 5 A hat-trick from Mark Gallagher and two well taken goals by birthday boy Ryan Hunter lead the Hall to an impressive first win in schoolboy football at Carrig Park. Best for the hosts in an impressive all round performance were Stephen Sharpe and Joe Coughlan. U-12 Premier Division Douglas Hall 0; Rockmount 1 The visitors grabbed all three points with a goal near the end of a gripping contest. Hall’s back-four of full-backs Gavin McSweeney and Shane Murphy & central defenders Andy O’Brien and Daithi O’Regan were outstanding throughout. Sam McGrath, Nathan Walsh and Darren Kelly gave everything up front. U-14 Division Five Douglas Hall A 9; Blarney Utd. A 1 Colm Daly notched four for the winners, with Adam Gould (3), and one each by Fintan Cadogan & Conor Crowley completing a comprehensive win for the hosts. Captain Mark Power and goalkeeper Andrew Cullinane impressed against an under-strength United eleven. U-15 Friendly Douglas Hall U-15 3; Douglas Hall U-14 1 Following a scoreless first-half, goals from Kieran Allenby (2) & Jordan Kavanagh secured victory over Kevi n O’Reilly & Gavin Roche’s charges. Brian Barry replied for the losers from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining. U-16 Premier Division Douglas Hall 1; Inishvilla 1 Dave Reardan scored for the Hall in a one-one draw at Moneygourney on Sunday morning. frustrating for the club player who would appear to be falling into the category of second class citizen; the timing and frequency of his club games is determined by the games the intercounty player is involved in. My understanding of the situation is that this issue has been addressed on numerous occasions but with no solution to the problem. May I give you the reader an example of championship fixture layout with regard to minor hurling? The first round was played
on 23/04/10 and the next round will take place after the all-Ireland final (19/09/10). How does one keep players interested? How is one expected to promote the game of hurling in the city? The standard of hurling is dropping alarmingly here in Cork at both underage and adult level. Are the boards at all levels interested in the club player? I think not. The fall-off from hurling at all levels is frightening. I wonder why? More next week, Pat.

DOUGLAS GAA Senior Hurling Championship: On Monday 30th August the Douglas hurlers had a comfortable win over U.C.C. to advance in the championship. Finbarr Desmond grabbed the first score of the game for Douglas and U.C.C. were in arrears thereafter. Early in the second half a Mark Harrington goal sealed the win for Douglas. During the course of the hour Stephen Moylan scored five points while Douglas were also well served by Colm Lucey, Eoin Cadogan, John Collins and Fionn Cronin who made his senior championship debut. The final score was Douglas 1-13 UCC 0-09. Ryan’s SuperValu began their sponsorship of the Douglas hurlers at the beginning of last season. This year their generous sponsorship has also included the senior footballers. In eleven Cork county championship outings under the Ryan’s SuperValu sponsorship, Douglas remain unbeaten.
Under 21 “A” Hurling Championship:
After a thrilling contest Na Piarsaigh edged out Douglas by two points to win a place in the final of the under 21 “A” hurling city championship. Thanks to scores from Odhrán Mulrooney and David Cuthbert Douglas forged an early lead. However, Na Piarsaigh enjoyed a period of domination during the crucial second quarter and goaled to seize the initiative. Within a minute of the changeover the Na Piarsaigh goal keeper produced an outstanding save to push away Alan Cadogan’s ground shot. Douglas dominated the second half and when Lucey pointed again to give Douglas the lead with only three minutes remaining the south side team were on the cusp of a great victory. Unfortunately, Douglas received a fatal blow when Na Piarsaigh conjured up a late goal to win the game on a scoreline of 2-16 to 0-20. Pat Scannell, Max McGrath, Philip Shine, Mark Collins and captain Colm Lucey were outstanding for Douglas.
Premier Minor Football Championship:
Douglas defeated Beara last Wednesday night in Ballincollig to progress in championship. Despite a nervy start, Douglas grabbed the game by the scruff of the net after Josh Kra (penalty) and Alan Cadogan goaled. Seán Collins and James Furlong scored two points each while Paul Fitzgerald and Martin Barry completed the scoring for Douglas. The final score was Douglas 2-08 Beara 1-06. 1/6
