Goold’s – Vet on call! While walking my dogs last week, the younger of my two Springer Spaniels, molly who is just a 6 month old pup and full of beans, decided to do her usual and chase rabbits into the wooded area of my local park. As she emerged a few minutes later and bounded across the park, I noticed her legs were pretty dark and thought, ‘she’s been digging’, that was until she got to me and I realised it was blood. She had punctured a blood vessel, although at the time I thought it was an artery, there was so much blood and it pouring profusely. It was a Saturday evening at 8.30 and had no choice there and then but to give Connor Goold of Goold’s Vet Clinic a call and without hesitation he told me to go to the surgery and he’d meet me there. Sure enough, within a short time Connor had Molly sedated and while I carried on, he stitched Molly and kept her overnight to make sure all was ok, before I collected her the following day (Sunday) and none the worse for wear. The care Connor Goold and his team shows is second to none as I have witnessed in the past and at the time of me calling with this emergency, Connor (which I subsequently found out) had just sat down to a meal in a restaurant in town but raced to his surgery to help Molly. Thanks and hats off to Connor for his dedication and obvious disbelief in the phrase ‘out of hours’. Sympathies The sudden death of a young person is hard to comprehend and in the past week I have been touched by two such passings - my sincere sympathies go to the Hurley and Cadogan families at this time. Up the Rebels! The big occasion this weekend, as if anyone needs telling, is the All Ireland Football Final and on behalf of all the crew here at The Post, I would like to wish the Cork teams in the senior and minor finals, all the best on Sunday. Up the Rebels!

Small children can sing, dance, hear and experience music. Some can begin playing the recorder or violin. Slightly older ones (8 years upwards) can take up piano, keyboard (or both), guitar - which can be used as a solo instrument, in folk, ceili, pop or rock bands. Guitar and keyboard are extremely versatile. Singers like' "Glee' type singing and others choral music or church choirs. Adults can do musical shows or opera. And that is only touching on the surface. Other instruments people love are classical 2nd Irish harp trumpet and brass, flute and woodwind. There are more stringed instruments than violin - also~ collections of drums (African, Oriental, pop/rock and traditional). So if a musical instrument is neglected and gathering dust in your attic, why not bring it out and have a go at a few tunes?

COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION News (With Helen Fox PRO) The results of the Tidy Towns competition are being announced as we go to press in five major categories. Tallanstown won in the Tidiest Village category. In the Tidiest Small Town category, Lismore, Co. Waterford is the winner, the Tidiest Large Town is Killarney, and in the category Tidiest Large Urban Centre, Kilkenny is the winner. The title of Ireland’s Overall Tidiest Town is Tallanstown, Co. Meath. The details of how Douglas fared in this year’s competition haven’t emerged yet, but I hope John Fitzgerald of our Tidy Towns Committee will report on this next week. The Chairman of Tallanstown Tidy Towns said it took them 26 years to reach the standard that won them the award this year, so we must build on the success of each year to try to achieve the ultimate award. Bring Centre September can be a time for decluttering our homes before winter sets in. Just to remind readers that there is now an extra bin for food cans i.e. vegetable and fruit cans, fish cans, etc. at the Bring Centre in the Community Park as well as the existing bottles and drink cans recycling facility. Douglas Tidy Towns Committee The backbone of the Annual Tidy Towns effort is the volunteers up and down the country who get out in all

weather and work together for the betterment of their local town. In Douglas, we have our own very dedicated group of people who beaver away quietly all year round to improve the appearance of Douglas. They meet every Sat. at 10.30 a.m. (and work ‘til 12.30 pm) at the Community Centre to do a litter clean-up of the area and have regular planning meetings to drive forward their projects of enhancement of the Douglas area. For example, the committee have provided the jogging path in the Community Park, they care for existing trees and shrubs, tend the garden area and replace damaged stock. They can be contacted at info@ douglastidytowns.ie. They enter Douglas in the Annual Tidy Towns Competition. New volunteers are very welcome – just show up on Saturday morning and you will be provided with a high viz jacket and picker and off you go! We do appreciate the sponsorship given to the Tidy Towns effort by Super Valu who provide free equipment and manpower - two of their employees are among the committed volunteers that make up our group. In these recessionary times, it’s nice to support locally-owned enterprises whose ethos is to give back to the community.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

Somewhere in the back of my mind there is something about the legend of Oisín. Apparently one day he was out hunting when he saw a beautiful young woman named Niamh, daughter of the King of Tir Na Nóg and she asked Oisín to marry her and to come to her country. He agreed to this. She gave him a fairy horse on which to make his journey. When he got back to Ireland, Oisín realized that 300 years had passed and that all his friends and everything he knew was now gone. On the way back he saw a group of men trying to lift a heavy rock. He bent down to help them but he fell from his horse and immediately turned into an old, blind man and died shortly afterwards but his horse carried on. Frances O’Keeffe of the Douglas Writers Group has written an excellent villanelle that brings the legend back to life. Her poem must rate as one of the finest of this format in our time The villanelle is a form of poem that was originally a song sung by European farm laborers; the name comes from the Latin villa, or farm. The medieval French villanelles were irregular, but in the sixteenth century the form became fixed. In today’s world it is very much ignored. Niamh’s Lament The white horse galloped through the sea. Ballinlough Community News With Mary Cremin Ballinlough Writers Group The next meeting of the Ballinlough Writers Group will be held in John O’Sullivan’s (Board Room), Douglas on Friday 17th September. The Ballinlough Writers Group meets on the 3rd Friday of every month at 5.30pm Bring ten copies of a short story or poem you have written. The 38/40th Ballinlough Scouts A.G.M. was held on Wednesday 8th September at the Scout Hall. The following reports were given: Beavers This Section has 24 members, and held 30 meetings In the Scout Hall from September to June. There was a very active programme for the year. Indoor activities included games, Arts & Crafts, a Christmas Service, Easter Charity raffle €90 was raised which was donated to the Mercy hospital), and a beanstalk competition. Grants for Enterprise Workshops Cork City Enterprise Board is running a “Start your own Business Programme”. It will run on six consecutive Wednesday evenings starting September 15th at the River Lee Hotel (Jury’s) Western Road, Cork (6.30pm - 9.30pm. €70). Cllr Kieran McCarthy, through his ward funds, is offering to fund five places on this course for interested persons living in the south east ward of Cork City. This programme is designed for anyone with a specific business idea in mind and a firm commitment to develop the business idea. Over six evening sessions, the course encourages each participant to explore the business idea in a structured framework that covers questions such as: Why do I want to set up a business? What are my business goals? What qualifications, skills and experience do I bring to the business? How do I write a business plan? What is my product? Who are my customers? Checklists and worksheets are provided where appropriate to encourage the participants to apply the ideas discussed to their own business idea. There was also an Investiture night which was attended by parents and families of the boys. 38th Macaoimh This year there were 20 members in the Section, There was one activity outside the hall per month. Our activities included a hike, Halloween party in the hall, a bowling night, a swimming night, a trip to Feta, a country sports day, an overnight in Skilfully. And a camping weekend in Garretstown. The Macaoimh worked heart, and earned a lot of badges. 40th Macaoimh This year there were 28 members in the section. It was decided to focus on more Scouting type activities and build up scouting skills. During the year there were hikes to Rostellan, Fota (with the 38th Macaoimh), a Cycle Hike covering the Old railway line in Blackrock, a visit to the Civil defence and orienteering in Marlogue Woods, The year was rounded off with a parent and Macaoimh hill walk to the Galtee mountains., other activities included the Gift Mass (Rochestown). Bowling night in the Planet in Blackpool, Inter Night (CIT), Swimming (Bishopstown), and A BBQ (Community Centre). The Investiture took place in after out tour of the Civil Defence in Ballyvolane Scouts Most of the meetings were held in the Scout Hall, which opened with a uniform inspection, then followed by a game, the rest of

the meeting involved learning new skills like pioneering and map work, and other challenges. The troop performed very well in the Indoor inspection section of the Shield Competition. Thursday nights included Summer Party BBQ, Tracker Badge training nights, and cooking pancakes, Investuire of new Scouts and awarding Tracker Badges, A number of meetings took place outside the Hall, a night hike to Currabinny, City Gaol tour, Orienteering in Ballinlough, Christmas Party in Blackpool. Venturers There are 16 members in this section, they are always looking out for new members. The meeting nights consists of various games, challenges, and group discussions. They also went on hikes, and bowling to the Planet in Blackpool. A word of thanks to the Leaders of all the Sections, who give up so much of their time voluntary week after week, and spend so much time in planning and organising the programme for the year, Some of the Leaders are stepping down this year, a sincere word of thanks to them, and a welcome to the new Leaders. Ladies Retirement Club The Ladies Retirement club will reopen on Monday 20th September at 2.30pm. New members welcome Community Centre Bingo every Friday night at 8.15.

Carrigaline Macra Man is in top six finalists for FBD Young Farmer Competition. Alan Jagoe from Novohal recently reached the top six finalists of the FBD Young Farmer Competition. The competition aims to recognise excellence in the agricultural industry and promote farming as a career with a bright future. Alan, a dairy farmer stated that he was born into farming and couldn’t imagine himself doing anything else. It is his chosen profession and feels that there is great satisfaction in farming for young people in today’s society. Congratulations to Paul Kehoe, Co.Wexford who was the overall winner of the competition. Paul has now won the top prize of a specially commissioned piece by artist Peter McGuire and a travel bursary worth €3,000. Substantial prizes were also awarded to second place winner Mattie Moore from Rhode, Co. Offaly and third place winner John Joyce from Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. Well done to all involved. Seandun Macra are heading to the Planet bowling alley in Blackpool

TIDY TOWNS Carrigalline Tidy Towns committee is mounting their bulb planting campaign this week. Volunteers are welcome to join them at the Community Complex on Tuesday morning at 10.00 am where they will start planting in the Community Park. Cathaoirleach Pat Sheridan outlined some of the plans CARA has for the year ahead including a number of day trips, a four-day break to Killarney and also an excursion to Scotland next year. 35 members booked their places to go on an outing to Cobh Heritage Centre and Spike Island on Thursday 16th September. Check Your Entitlement to Fuel Allowance Local Fianna Fáil T.D. Michael McGrath has encouraged people in Cork City and County to check whether they may be entitled to receive the fuel allowance, which is now being paid to eligible persons. Fuel allowance payments have now recommenced for eligible persons and will continue through to next April. The scheme operates for 32 weeks each year from September to the end of April. “The Fuel Allowance is a payment under the National Fuel Scheme to help with the cost of heating your home. It is paid to people who are dependant on long-term social welfare or Health Service Executive (HSE) payments and who are unable to provide for their own heating needs,” according to Deputy McGrath. Deputy McGrath reminded people that the fuel allowance can be paid on top of the household benefits package. “Any person in receipt of a social welfare or HSE payment should check their entitlement to the fuel allowance. The allowance is only a very modest amount but would go some way to offsetting the significant cost of heating a home through the winter and on to next April,” stated Deputy McGrath. The fuel allowance payment is €20 per week. Application forms can be accessed online at www.welfare.ie , at your local social welfare office or by phoning 1890 927 770. In addition, anyone with any queries regarding this or any other welfare scheme may contact Deputy McGrath’s office at 4376699 or by emailing michael.mcgrath@oir.ie

Alzheimer’s Disease Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia — the loss of intellectual and social abilities severe enough to interfere with daily functioning. In Alzheimer's disease, healthy brain tissue degenerates, causing a steady decline in memory and mental abilities. Today, 44,000 people and 50,000 carers in Ireland are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. Although there's no cure, treatments may improve the quality of life for people with Alzheimer's disease. Those with Alzheimer's — as well as those who care for them — need support and affection from friends and family to cope. Alzheimer's disease may start with slight memory loss and confusion, but it eventually leads to irreversible mental impairment that destroys a person's ability to remember, reason, learn and imagine. No one factor appears to cause Alzheimer's disease. Instead, scientists believe that it may take a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors to trigger the onset of symptoms. While the causes of Alzheimer's are poorly understood, its effect on brain tissue is clear. Alzheimer's disease damages and kills brain cells. Currently, there's no cure for Alzheimer's disease. Doctors sometimes prescribe drugs to improve signs and symptoms that often accompany Alzheimer's, including sleeplessness, wandering, anxiety, agitation and depression. But only two varieties of medications have been proved to slow

the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's. Cholinesterase inhibitors This group of medications — which includes donepezil (Aricept), rivastigmine (Exelon) and galantamine (Reminyl). Memantine (Ebixa) The first drug approved to treat moderate to severe stages of Alzheimer's, memantine protects brain cells from damage caused by the chemical messenger glutamate. A healthy lifestyle may help prevent or postpone the development of Alzheimer's disease. Because Alzheimer's is most common in people over the age of 80, delaying the onset of the disease would increase the probability that people will die of other causes before Alzheimer's has a chance to develop. Exercise your body-Higher levels of physical activity have been associated with a lower incidence of Alzheimer's disease. Some researchers believe that lifelong mental exercise and learning may promote the growth of additional synapses, the connections between neurons, and delay the onset of dementia. You've got to put your back into the work you want to do and put up with the part of it that is a bore for you. You've got to do the drudgery and make the sacrifice. For success in any garden you've got to pay the price. Plan for the spring and plant lots of spring bulbs. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Finish clearing summer bedding, stir in general fertiliser and level the ground. Start planting out spring flowers in showery weather, or water thoroughly after planting. Cut back exhausted herbaceous perennials, and divide overcrowded plants. Finish planting daffodils, and start on crocus, fritillaries and other smaller bulbs. Start planting evergreen shrubs and trees. Pull up exhausted hardy annuals; collect any seeds or scatter where plants were growing. Dismantle window box and container displays ready to replant with spring bedding and bulbs. Sow antirrhinums in a cold frame: sow some direct in alkaline free draining sites such as stone wall crevices. Stop deadheading calendulas and leave remaining seed heads to produce early-flowering seedlings. Arrange the dead foliage of peonies over their crowns to protect young shoots from spring frosts.

Honda Jazz Hybrid debuts at Paris Motor Show The Jazz Hybrid will make its world motor show debut at the Paris Motor Show, which takes place from October 2nd to 17th next, further demonstrating Honda’s continuing commitment to petrol-electric hybrid technology. The Jazz Hybrid will be launched in Europe in 2011 when full details of price and specifications will be announced. The launch of the latest addition to the practical Jazz line-up will mark the first time a parallel hybrid vehicle has been available to B-segment consumers. The IMA hybrid motor and control system are shared with the Insight and CR-Z hybrids, taking advantage of the proven reliability of this important technology. With almost two decades of development and 10 years of sales behind it, the Honda IMA system has proven itself to be a flexible and dependable technology, with over half a million vehicles on the road benefitting from its combination of low emissions and fuel economy. The new model will feature the same engine as the Insight hybrid - the 1.3 litre i-VTEC engine which is combined with a CVT gearbox with an electric

motor sandwiched between the two to create a parallel hybrid system. Like the Insight and Civic Hybrid models the Jazz Hybrid will be capable of running on the electric motor alone under some medium and low speed conditions. Much of the Jazz's practicality is derived from its height but despite being taller than the Insight, the Jazz Hybrid manages to maintain fuel consumption and CO2 emissions on comparable levels. Visually the Jazz hybrid is distinguished from the current Jazz range with revised headlights, with a blue surround, clear rear lights, new front grille, restyled bumpers and a chrome tailgate garnish. The new hybrid will also be available in a range of existing colours plus a bespoke Lime Green metallic. Inside the cabin is also given a fresh look with darker single colour dashboard, which contrasts strongly with the blue lighting of the dials and stereo. The new hybrid is also available with leather trim, the first time this has been available on a Jazz

Free Family Fun at Tramore Oceanic Surf and Sea Festival September 23 -26 Lovers of the Seaside will be descending on Tramore for the third annual Tramore Oceanic Surf and Sea Festival from September 23 to 26 to join in one of the many free events and workshops featuring on the festival programme. Free Irish Wildlife Trust Seaweed Workshops, Eco Walks, Seafood Foraging, Green Energy and a Coastal Eco Workshop with Coastwatch Ireland all feature on the programme. The festival programme also features a ‘Farmer’s and Country Market Extravaganza’ on the Promenade, half price surf hire and lessons from all four surf schools, dry sailing tuition, Rock-painting with

the Middle Earth Venture Scouts, Face-painting, a Non-Electrical Picnic and for the car lovers a classic Volkswagen display, a 60 place free Ladies Surf Weekend, Festival Special Menu’s at The Towns Restaurants a Mini Surf Film Festival and much more. An old tradition of the bathing women of Tramore, of carrying seaweed dolls along the promenade and then later throwing them into the sea, will be revived, where on Sunday 26, at the festival close, a parade with the Sea Shanty singers The Hooks and Crooks, will take place along the Tramore promenade parading a ten foot seaweed doll which will then be tossed into the sea just like our seaside ancestors did nearly 100 years ago. Lone sailor has lucky escape from blazing pleasure craft off the East Cork coast A lone sailor had just enough time to send out a mayday before abandoning his blazing 28 ft pleasure craft 9 miles east of Ballycotton lighthouse. Crew pagers at Youghal and Ballycotton lifeboat stations were activated. Crewmembers at Ballycotton lifeboat station spoke of how they could see the black smoke in the distance as they

rushed to the lifeboat station. An angling boat in the vicinity recovered the lone sailor from the sea. He was transferred to another angling boat and was immediately taken to Youghal where his condition was assessed by medical personnel. Youghal and Ballycotton lifeboats were requested by the Coastguard to remain on scene while the pleasure craft blazed. Approximately an hour later the boat sank and the lifeboats returned to station.

allow cool slightly, then add the blackberries. For the crumble topping, rub the butter into the flour to make ‘coarse breadcrumbs’ – don’t rub the butter in too much or it won’t have that nice crunchy texture. Add the sugar, and any nuts or oats if you’re using them. Lastly, sprinkle the lovely crumble mixture over the apple and berry mixture and bake for around 35 – 45 minutes, until golden brown and bubbling at the sides. Serve warm with softly whipped cream (perhaps sprinkled with brown sugar), or delicious Irish vanilla ice cream.

Serves around 4 Apples and Blackberries are in season just now. Fruit: 3-4 large cooking apples, peeled, cored and cut into large pieces 1 tablespoon water 2-3 tablespoons sugar 225g (8oz) blackberries * Crumble topping: 75g good Irish butter 175g plain white flour 75g Demerara sugar *you could also add a few chopped walnuts or almonds, or even some oats to make the crumble crunchier Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/ gas 4. Put the apple pieces into a saucepan with the water and sugar – on a low heat and cook gently until the apples are soft – approximately 10 minutes (give or take). Make sure to give the mixture an ‘odd stir’ to ensure it doesn’t stick to the bottom. When it’s done – taste, adding a little more sugar if you think it needs it. Transfer the apple into a large pie dish and

College Corinthians AFC Schoolboys Section Under 11 Premier Division Corinthian Boys 3 Temple Utd. 1 Corinthian Boys picked up another three points this weekend after a confident display. Two goals from Eoin Murphy and one from Eoin Davis saw the home side triumph. Temple competed well throughout making sure that Corinthians had to work hard for the full 60 minutes. Their were other great performances from David Nason, James Holland, Ethan Hurley, Ciaran Couch and Alex Chandler. Division 1 Strand Utd.. 1 Corinthian Boys A 2 Two goals by Davie Scott as well as an excellent team performance gave Corinthians a fine away victory over Strand Utd. Douglas Community School Athletics by Steven Macklin Douglas Community Schools 1st year athletes got their first taste of cross-country running recently when the school staged its annual 1st year cross-country league. The races were held over a 900m loop in the school and the athletes had the added incentive of having Togher Athletic clubs Irish international athletes Robert & Marian Heffernan on hand to present the medals. In the class races the NA1 winner was Barry Forde in 3.37, the NP1 winner was Eric Murphy 3.50, the NE1/NS1 winner was James Gorton 3.29. The 'A' and 'B' finals produced some outstanding races with 3 of the athletes making it onto the alltime top 10 list of fastest times on the course. The 'B' final was won by Daniel Leahy in a hugely impressive time of 3.28 and thus becoming the 2010 1st year champion. He was followed in by Gracia Mukwa 2nd and Darragh O' Brien in 3rd. The 'A' final was won by James Gorton 3.29 with Eric Murphy 2nd and Sean Wilson 3rd. Well done to all the athletes who competed.

Corinthian Boys C 2 Churchvilla 1 A great team effort against a strong Churchvilla team saw Daniel Quinlan and Jaze Kabia score in a 2 – 1 victory.Corinthians Boys C were put under pressure right from the start but grew into the game and were full value for a 1-0 first half lead. Despite creating numerous chances Corinthians were caught by a quick break to find the game all square with time running out.To their credit they upped the tempo of their game and got a deserved winner with 10 min to go. Under 12 Premier Division Corinthian Boys 2 Springfield Ramblers 2 Corinthians went one up in the opening 10 minutes with a superb long range shot from Colin O'Brien. David Lynch and Ross Welch were linking well in midfield with Dean Swords and Gavin Holland working tirelessly on the wings. Springfield equalised due to a lapse of concentration at the back from

Corinthians. Harry Shanahan regained the lead for Corinthians by slotting home before half time. Springfield dominated the early stages of the second half and Daniel Cullen, who was man of the match, and Sean Desmond were kept busy at the back and goalkeeper . Stephen Jermyn pulled off some magnificent saves to keep Cors in front. Tramore Athletic FC Umbro U13 Division 2 Tramore Athletic 1 Greenwood 3 The Tramore Athletic U13s suffered their first defeat of the new league season when they were defeated by three goals to one at home to Greenwood on Saturday morning. Tramore were unfortunate to lose this evenly contested tie especially after grabbing the opening goal in splendid fashion when a rasping strike from Jacob Morris flew low in the bottom corner of Greenwood’s net. However despite impressive passing and invention in the attacking third Tramore could not grab a second goal to give them the cushion of a two goal advantage and they were made to pay for this when Greenwood scored three well worked ‘training ground goals’ from three set pieces. Tramore rallied from the concession of these goals but could not turn their pressure into goals and

at the final whistle had to taste defeat for the first time this season despite their good performance and the even nature of the contest. A late late winner by St Marys denied Tramore a deserved shot at extra time after they showed great resilience and no little skill when they twice came from behind to level the match through goals from Eric Ryan and Jason Meehan and seemed destined for thirty more minutes of action in this exciting cup game when they were hit by St Marys sucker punch. On the day of a disappointing result but most encouraging performance Collin Hammond and Graham O’Donovan were Tramore’s best players. The Tramore Athletic Soccertots training camp continues this Sunday morning in Tramore Park from 10am for boys and girls aged 6-10. FOCUS Snippets from the Local and national Scene By Pat Harrington Up for the Match This Saturday night programme is broadcast on the nights preceding the all-Ireland hurling & football finals. I must confess I had not seen the show for several years prior to this years hurling encounter. This time I watched it from start to finish and I can honestly say I enjoyed the experience no end. The programme had lots of variety and was hugely entertaining. Times have moved on so R.T.E. needed to move on and modernize. This was definitely a step in the right direction. Minor all-Ireland Hurling Final Going on the words of the pundits and indeed the man in the street, I wondered if the minor final would be worth watching. The bookies had Kilkenny at 12/1 on. Clare fairly broke from the traps; their intense work rate had to be admired. The men of the Banner did all the hurling. The Noresiders, though failing to score over a period of twenty minutes were just four points in arrears at the break. But goals win matches and Kilkenny scored a major after four minutes of the second half and added a second going into the final quarter. Those were vital scores. Was the game a classic? No, but it was hugely exciting. I don’t at all like some bad habits that are creeping into the game at minor level. It would appear that the players at this grade are replicating what seems to have become the norm in the adult game. Players swarm around the man in possession preventing him from playing the ball. More often than not in such cases the referee will penalize the player in possession. While I’m on the subject of bad practice, an area to merit comment came to my notice when a player trying to break through two opposing players was physically lifted into the air and got no free for what was to me an obvious foul. Of course there is nothing wrong with intensity; how many times during this game did we witness a group of six or seven players contesting possession

Hall under 14's produced a great display to take a point from this most difficult of fixtures. Brian Burke made no mistake from the penalty spot after 15 minutes to give Hall the lead. This capped an outstanding first half display. Last years runaway champions began the second half strongly and forced an equaliser five minutes into the second-half meaning honours were shared at the end of a pulsating clash. Every Hall player can be proud of their efforts.

Senior Final The senior all-Ireland hurling final produced a free-ridden opening half; yes, it was intense but very stop/start – 19 frees. It was sad to see Henry Shefflin limping off having turned awkwardly. The Cats were struggling bigtime against the wind until Richie Power goaled. The Tipp half forwards were not winning clean ball and short puck-outs backfired on the side. It was interesting to hear Paul Flynn’s half-time comments in which he predicted Tipperary would score goals. For long periods of the second half Kilkenny were on top around the half-forward line and nearly reeled in their opponents. Both sides emptied their respective dug-outs. The Tipp subs scored a total of four points between them. With a hat-trick of goals it had to be Lar Corbett’s day – certainly an admirable achievement. I have very rarely become so animated in front of the television, shouting for a team other than Cork. I have great admiration for Kilkenny but I’m sure most will agree the game needed new champions since the competition had become somewhat stale. Now the challenge is laid for other counties to up their standards.

All-Ireland Football The time is nigh and the moment we’ve been waiting for is just around the corner. But will Cork play an expansive game? Will they finally throw off the shackles? Will they entertain their long-suffering supporters? This time we will need a hatful of goals. All this is a most unlikely scenario simply because it is an all-Ireland final and the stakes are so high. The sides will probably stifle each other preventing players from performing to the best of their ability. In relation to this Cork style of football, does the leopard change his spots? I believe the Cork style is unlikely to change. Let’s just hope a victory is achieved. The best of luck to Eoin Cadogan and Eoin Cotter on the senior panel and David Hanrahan in the minor squad. Douglas Hall AFC The Seniors had a good 3-2 win away to Rockmount in the Donie Forde Cup. After conceding an early penalty the 'Hall responded with 3 first half goals from Gary Drennan & Brian Wilkinson (2) to go in 3-1 up at the break. Despite going down to 10 men and conceding again they held out for a deserved 3-2 win and can now look forward to the semi final away to St Mary's. The MSL Juniors suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat away to Carrigaline, its more league action next Friday night at Moneygourney versus Blarney with a 7:30 kick off. The AUL Juniors continue their good form with a 5-0 home win over Richmond in the AOH Cup. Ronan Barry (3, Rory O'Sullivan & Richard Butler were the scorers. Next week its the FAI Junior Cup Round 1 away to Waterloo on Sat at 3pm. The Youths had a good 3-2 win over Innishvilla, Cormac McCarthy, Charles Murphy & Eoin Cremin were the scorers, next week its away to Leeds on Sat at 3pm. The U/17 were beaten 5-0 at home by a strong Rockmount side, they have no game next week due to the All Ireland Football final. Best wishes to the Cork Footballers especially to the Douglas reps Eoin Cotter & Eoin Cadogan, hopefully they can go and secure Sam Maguire.

DOUGLAS GAA Douglas crowned under 14 premier county football champions: Douglas’ status as the top under-age football club in the county was cemented at Brinny last Saturday afternoon as the under 14 premier county title was claimed after a 6-12 to 2-12 win over Clonakilty. Aided by the breeze the West Cork side seized an early initiative and went 0-07 to 0-02 ahead. However, following a devastating scoring spree during the second quarter Douglas led at the break by 4-04 to 0-09. Douglas controlled the second half and ran out winners by 6-12 to 2-12. Mark Dolan played some very intelligent football and was at the hub of Douglas’ best moves. Michael Lynch and Gary Hartnett’s goal scoring was clinical while midfielder Daniel “Redser” O’Sullivan demonstrated again that he is destined to become a great Douglas player. Captain Kevin Flahive delivered a very eloquent victory speech to kick off the celebrations.

Bobby Ryan hosted Douglas last Sunday afternoon in a minor hurling challenge. Hoarse from singing Slievenamon during the previous week, Ryan felt that a visit to the alleged home of hurling would be of benefit to the Douglas lads. However, after goals from Alan Cadogan, Podge Walsh and Shane O’Donoghue, Douglas returned home with a convincing 3-19 to 2-12 victory. Douglas play Erins Own in championship on Saturday 25th September.
